reated after the Black Sox scandal, the position of Major League Baseball commissioner is nearly a century old. It’s amazing that one man has had contact with all of them — in the strictest sense of the word. “I got on Judge Landis’ knee at 2 years old,” says Bill Bartholomay, referring to the original baseball czar, Kenesaw Mountain Landis. “We were up with him at Lake Geneva where (Cubs’ owner) Mr. Wrigley hosted softball games.” Still engaging and busy in his 80s — he had just returned from the Major League Baseball draft outside of New York when we talked — Bartholomay got involved with the game soon after graduating from Lake Forest College, joining the board of the Chicago White Sox. In 1962, he and a group of investors purchased the Milwaukee Braves. After moving the franchise to Atlanta — expanding pro baseball to new fans in the South while leaving a stunned city behind — he witnessed history when Hank Aaron swatted his 715th home run, breaking Babe Ruth’s seemingly untouchable mark in front of a national television audience. “I was sitting in the front row with Hank’s mother and father,” Bartholomay recalls. “There’s a place where you go beyond adrenaline — I carried his mother above the barrier and onto the field after he hit it.”

Performance art Tempel Lipizzans are a sight to behold on the North Shore
Tempel Lipizzan riders gather at Tempel Farms. photography
■ by bill mclean Esther Buonanno put a blade of grass between her thumbs and blew hard, producing a piercing whistle and abruptly interrupting the tranquility of a summer day years ago at Tempel Farms in Old Mill Creek. Wonderment gripped the young girl shortly thereafter, as the blade glided back to the edge of a pasture and a herd of young Lipizzan horses galloped toward the source of the unusual sound. “It was always one of my favorite moments when I visited the horses in the summers, seeing them respond to my call like that,” recalls Buonanno, now the program director of the Tempel Lipizzan Corporation and granddaughter of the late Tempel Smith, an industrialist from the Midwest who bought 20 Lipizzans — mares, stallions and young horses — in Austria and had them transported to the U.S. via a German freighter in 1958. “A veterinarian [Brigadier General Dr. Mikulas Ferjencik] at Tempel Farms,” she adds, “taught me how to call the herd. They came at me out of curiosity more than anything else.” Spectators continue to canter toward 800 seats on select Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays this summer (through Sept. 13) for matinee and evening Lipizzan performances at Tempel Farms, located on 7,000 acres five miles south of the Illinois-Wisconsin border in Lake County. The strikingly white and disciplined horses have always had a knack for captivating people of all ages, as they did when Smith and his wife, Esther VanderLaan Smith, soaked up the sights and clip clops at the Spanish Riding School in Vienna, Austria, in the 1950s. Mr. Smith shepherded his herd of 20 Lipizzan prizes to a farm in Wisconsin, where they stayed briefly before settling in on prime farmland in Old Mill Creek more than 50 years ago. Tempel Farms is the only place in the world where Lipizzans breed, train and perform on the same property. The sophisticated training regimen at Tempel Farms mirrors the program that riding masters in Europe devised in the 16th and 17th centuries. Before Tempel Smith died in 1980, the Tempel Lipizzans performed primarily for corporate gatherings and charitable events; they also fascinated VIPs — and VPs — at
by joel lerner Presidential Inaugurations and drew “oohs and aahs” well before fireworks displays at special Fourth of July bicentennial celebrations in 1976. Smith’s daughters — Chicagoan Linda Smith Buonanno (Esther’s mother) and Lake Forest resident Martha Smith Simpson — opened Lipizzan shows to the public when they took over the reins at Tempel Farms. Years later, in 1997, the sisters received the Officer’s Cross — a Grand Decoration of Honour for Service to the Republic of Austria — for their dedication to the Lipizzan breed and the culture and tradition of classical horsemanship. Larry Leffingwell, grandson of Tempel Smith, serves Tempel Farms as its manager. “He has played a huge role in what we look like, in the aesthetics of the place,” Esther Buonanno says. “Watching one of our shows takes you back to a different time, helps you slow down. Some arrive to see horses jumping. Others may come simply because they love the beauty of horses. Winston Churchill said, ‘There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man.’ “A show at Tempel Farms,” she adds, “is a wonderful opportunity to sit and watch performance art. A lost gem exists here.” The classical dressage move that consistently draws the loudest gasps and pops the most eyes at Lipizzan shows is the capriole, one of several crowd-pleasing “airs above the ground.” The horse leaps from all four hooves and, at the apex of elevation, strikes out violently with his hind legs. It’s powerful, athletic, graceful and magical — all at once. “It’s the most explosive move, the most impressive move,” says Tempel Farms trainer Eliza Ardizzone, a Northbrook resident who was born in Lake Forest and is in her 30th year (fourth at Tempel Farms) as a trainer, a post that also includes riding Lipizzans and teaching students. “It’s a move that was used in wars to protect cavalry.” Trainers at Tempel Farms revere the history of the Lipizzan breed, especially when they’re in the presence of master trainer Conrad Schumacher. A native of Germany and one of the world’s foremost dressage trainers, he has guided students at the Olympic and World Championship levels. Schumacher visits Tempel Farms to share his equine acumen at least four times a year. “He’s the Bela Karolyi of the dressage world,” Esther
Buonanno says, referring to the renowned gymnastics guru who has coached nine Olympic champions, including Romanian Nadia Comaneci and Mary Lou Retton. “I’ve also compared the training of the Lipizzans to the training of ballet dancers; in each discipline it’s important to build the musculature in a way that will allow them to perform at the highest level.” A Lipizzan horse — born dark brown or black, it reaches its characteristic whiteness between the ages of 7-10 — doesn’t start training until the age of 4. It typically takes two years to fully train a Lipizzan to … walk. But it’s the regal walk before the start of a quadrille, a choreographed dressage ride commonly performed to music, with a minimum of four horses. “Is there anything exciting about a walk?” Beverely M. Bowie writes in “The White Horses of Vienna,” published in National Geographic Magazine in 1958. “One might not think so. … But all [of the spectators] respond to the achievement: the high knee action, the stately vertical carriage of the head, the slight downward thrust of the haunches, the precise and delicate placing of the feet — in sum, the indefinable impression of great vitality under the most sensitive and unobtrusive control.” It’s not unusual for elite-level Lipizzans to perform well into their 20s, and many live for more than 30 years. “What surprises people about the Lipizzans is how closely they work together,” Esther Buonanno says. “Most people think stallions are wild and fight with each other all the time. These are incredibly smart horses.” Trainers have to be incredibly fit. Most of Ardizzone’s workdays at Tempel Farms start at 6 a.m. and don’t end until 5:30 p.m., meaning she can’t wait to hit the hay at night after being around hay all day. “I’m pretty tired at the end of the day,” she admits. “I work with a personal trainer to keep up with the demands; it’s a sport. “Sometimes, though, I want 26-hour days, because there are days when I think, ‘If I just had two more hours, I’d be able to do everything I need to do.’ ” For information on tickets and the dates and start times of the 13 remaining Lipizzan shows this summer (July 13-September 13), visit tempelfarms.com. ■

Restaurateur in prime position with new spot ■ by katie rose mceneely Lake Forester Steve Platcow is the chief executive officer of RPM Advertising in Chicago. This week, he and Chef Dominic Zumpano open Highwood’s new steakhouse, P.M. Prime, in the former Gabriel’s location on Green Bay Road. Reading: I just read “I’m Proud of You,” a book about a Texas reporter who is given an assignment to interview Mr. Rogers in the 1990s. As a result of the interview, the reporter and Mr. Rogers become close friends. The book is a narrative about that friendship and the correspondence between those two men for an eight-year period. It’s a beautiful book. Listening: The truth is, I’ve been listening to a lot of Frank Sinatra and quite a bit of Pearl Jam. Watching: I’m also a commercial pilot and I took a lovely flight up the lakeshore from Kenosha. I’ve been too busy to watch much TV lately. From a viewing standpoint, I generally gravitate towards nonfiction. Following: For the last dozen years on the RPM Advertising front, I’ve had the responsibility for the fine dining amenities within world-class casinos. P.M. Prime is not the first restaurant opening I’ve had responsibility for, but this is the first one I’ve had responsibility for and ownership of. I’m professionally confident that we’re taking the best professional procedures on this and bringing it home to our community. Activity: Dominic and I got real serious about doing P.M. Prime and doing it right just after the new year. We’ve been on the fast track, doing our due diligence to make it absolutely the best, all year. I became a big fan of Dominic’s, having gone to the Fish House in Lake Forest. I felt that his preparations were substantially beyond the quality of a
mid-price bistro concept. As I got to learn and know Dominic, I found he’d come from a five-star restaurant — we started talking about the opportunities that existed. I was such a big fan of Gabriel’s in Highwood and knowing that space was open, we began a dialogue about purchasing Gabriel’s and putting in a fine dining steakhouse. Eating: We’ve been sampling the menu, so the various dishes associated with the sides and the sauces being created. The appetizers, the vegetables and I daresay a bit too many desserts that are all fabulous and prepared from scratch in-house. Nothing is outsourced, right down to the maraschino cherries! They’re not coming out of a jar. I don’t have a favorite, but I will tell you this: what I’ve been focusing on is it’s very easy to go into the restaurant and order the most expensive entrée and have a wonderful time. I’ve been focusing on our least expensive entrees, and Dominic and I think our least expensive entrees are absolutely top-tier delicious. My father is 87-yearsold. He’s still alive and grew up in the Great Depression. The final test on the menu was to put it in front of him and get his stamp of approval that it was reasonable. For me personally, that’s an important benchmark. What is your favorite mistake? I’ll tell you what, I’ve made them! I really do believe we learn more from our mistakes than we do from our successes. In the final years of my mother’s life, I was so busy pursing success associated with RPM Advertising that I’m very sorry I didn’t spend more time with her. If I had the opportunity to correct any of the mistakes I made in my life, it would have been as a young adult to spend more time with my mother. I sure would give anything to be able to spend just one more day with her. ■

A Light Touch
A man of the house can enjoy sitting in the sunroom with a glass of wine on one of the room's four Edelmann-designed club chairs. A mirrored coffee table by A. Rudin and a rug from Atelier Lapchi round out the elegant conversation area.
■ by thomas connors A historic Kenilworth home is washed in light and soothing color by a designer who once lived in the neighborhood. Designer Julia Edelmann and her Kenilworth client Christine Andrie had lived in town previously. Andrie grew up in Kenilworth, and Edelmann moved in as an adult; she even remembers taking her daughter to a birthday party at the house Andrie now owns, a 1908 residence by noted Prairie School architect George Maher, with handsome millwork, leaded glass windows, and a big sun porch. “But it was so dark and cramped,” Edelmann recalls. Thanks to the work of architect Steve Munson and her own light touch a few years ago, the residence now carries its period style and artful updates with real panache. The project began simply enough. “The kitchen needed to be done,” explains Andrie. “It was
small and narrow with no counter space and just enough room for a tiny table that seated four.” That area has been transformed into a commodious pantry, and the new kitchen is a bright, lively space anchored by a massive, granite-topped island and roomy enough to accommodate a proper table with plenty of seating. With that problem solved, Andrie and her husband, John, moved full steam ahead. Working with Munson, they expanded the family room, added a mudroom and powder room, and reconfigured the secondary staircase and master suite. They opened up the living room by removing its original built-in cabinets and installing them in the dining room and hired artisan Bill Klopsch to replicate the leaded glass windows on the façade for the entire house. Once the house was in order architecturally, they contacted Edelmann, owner of Chicago’s Buckingham Interiors + Design, to flesh it out.
Standing in the fresh yet formal living room with her client, Edelmann laughs, “I just remember when you called me, you said, ‘I need a lot of help.’” When the Andries moved in, they owned a mishmash of furnishings, things each had acquired before they were married. And much of what they did have just didn’t suit their new home. “There is a lot of dark woodwork in this house,” notes Andrie, “and the things we had in the living room — a leather couch, Oriental rug — just made the space seem that much darker. Julia came in right away with this bluishgreen color. I would never have thought of this, but I love it.” The soothing hues are an unusually effective contrast to the dark oak floors and trim and give the traditionally inspired furniture a buoyant, contemporary feel. A large abstract canvas by Francine Turk — who based her palette on the fabrics in the room — adds a distinctly urbane touch to the space. Edelmann says, “We looked at hundreds and

hundreds of fabrics. We looked at probably more product on this project than for any client in our history. But it was all meaningful. Everything here was very thought out.” “I’m the kind of person that, when I see it, I know it, but it sometimes takes a long time to find it,” admits Andrie. “I don’t feel like I purchased anything just to fill a space. When I purchased something, I got it because I loved it.” And she was more than willing to wait for what she wanted. Her great, round mahogany dining table took months to fashion. “It’s very funny,” relates Edelmann. “As it moved through production, we’d get reports like, ‘Your baby has legs!’ It’s like a furniture pregnancy.” The adjacent sunroom, with its expanse of leaded glass windows, is a sophisticated companion to the formal living room. Here, four Edelmann-designed club chairs are gathered around a mirrored coffee table. In an almost whimsical nod to the inherent reserve architect George Maher incorporated in the original design of the house, Edelmann added two high-backed, heavily carved antique French armchairs to the room. new fabric in the lightest shade of aqua, in their scale and apparent age, they register wonderfully as silent sentinels from the past. One of the most striking aspects of Edelmann’s work is the quality of restraint. While far from spare, these spaces are judiciously populated with furniture and objects, each item complementing the other and all working in harmony with the historic style of the home. Not only does she refrain from introducing too much into these interiors, but her measured placement of the furniture allows each piece to stand out and express an almost sculptural presence. And the designer’s passion for fabrics endows every room with an essential richness. Silk covers the walls in the dining room, the vivid lotus print wallpaper in the powder room gives that intimate space an Aubrey Beardsley-like pop, and drapes in the family room sport a colorful, oversized botanical pattern that suggests the decorative spirit of Bloomsbury. Looking back over their collaboration, Edelmann remarks, “This project evolved to truly represent my client’s personality — more so, I think, than any other project I’ve been involved with.” ■

In the family room, Edelmann-designed drapes sport a colorful, oversized botanical pattern that suggests the decorative spirit of Bloomsbury; the chairs are custom-covered in mohair velvet fabric by Donghia.
The home's stately staircase is perfectly accented with Francine Turk's "Geronimo," which hangs over an antique iron console from Olde Good Things (restored by Kristopher Kwasny). A Formations "Palazzo" lantern lights the entry.

Jana and Jorden enjoy a Grand time in Lake Geneva During Memorial Day weekend, Jana and Jorden Brok — along with their two children, Coco and Josh — drove a short distance from their Highland Park home. But they might as well have traveled to another country. “Going to Lake Geneva is an accessible vacation, yet you feel like you’re really getting away,” says Jana. Staying in one of the renovated suites at the Grand Geneva Resort & Spa, the Brok family enjoyed both the slides at the water park and splashing about the swimming pool in “perfect weather” — plenty of sunshine but no humidity. They also played miniature golf, and the kids set off on horseback rides. For 8-year-old Coco, “it was the coolest thing she’s ever done,” Jana says. They walked around the town of Lake Geneva and found food to their liking. Dinner at Popeye’s — a popular spot launched in 1971 and featuring burgers and sandwiches — was a treat. They also ordered ice cream and more at Kilwins. “It’s our No. 1 favorite place,” Jana says. “It’s literally the best ice cream in the world. It’s worth waiting in line.” David Sweet ■ Jana and Jorden Brok of Highland Park are looking forward to the Be Part of the Cure event — of which Jane is a co-chair — on July 18 at the Culinary Innovation Center at Highland Baking Company in Northbrook. photography by joel lerner

wines of the week ■ by johnson ho When the dog days of summer call for vibrantly refreshing sips of wine, “liquid lumber” (oak-laden) and buttery Chardonnays simply do not fit the bill. The Mediterranean cultures discovered great wine partners for cold dishes centuries ago that are now gaining global attention. Here are three serendipitous discoveries — cool whites for hot nights:
SATURDAY DINNER 2012 Poggio alle Gazze dell Ornellaia, Bolgheri, Italy ($55)
The Ornellaia estate is best known as the Queen of Super Tuscans because of its plush and regal Merlot blends that rival the Grand Cru chateaux of Bordeaux. Very little known is their obscure, tiny white wine release made from the Sauvignon Blanc grape. Patterned after the fabulous white Bordeaux with a symphony of floral and fruit notes that culminate with a silky textured finish, it qualifies as a seductress of the senses. Serve it with luxurious seafood, veal or white asparagus dishes besides poultry Cacciatora, Linguini con vongole (clams) or Quiche Lorraine. Please decant for about 10 minutes by leaving the carafe in the refrigerator.
MIDWEEK MEAL 2012 La Crema Pinot Gris, Monterey, California ($19) An American transplant of the ancestral grape of Pinot Grigio, the opulent expression nectarine, pear, white peach and white pepper lavishes the palate with dramatic elan. The generous flavors welcome seasoned and gamey dishes, e.g. sushi, tempura, Cantonese/ Hunan/Szechuan cuisine, TexMex or Mideastern recipes. One of the few nice wine options with spicy versions of curry, sausages or salsa. BEST VALUE 2011 Laroche Bourgogne Chardonnay Tete de Cuvee, Burgundy, France ($19) Grown on cool hillside vineyards just west of the Alpine foothills this Chardonnay displays a delicate aroma of citrus, green apple, Bosque pear and well water minerals. That is followed by a slightly tingly acidity redolent of fresh cider and limeade, so crisp it begs for shellfish cocktails, trout Amandine (browned almond butter), crudites with sour cream dip or lobster rolls.

The perfect cocktail to start the weekend This frosty drink is as refreshing as frozen lemonade but has the added lushness of summer melon. Fresh thyme gives the fruit’s sweetness some grown-up dimension. Melon-Lime Slushy 6 cups diced honeydew, cantaloupe or watermelon 1/4 cup fresh lime juice, plus more to taste 1/2 cup sugar, plus more to taste 1 tsp fresh thyme leaves, plus sprigs for garnish 1/2 cup silver tequila or mezcal (optional)
Spread melon pieces on a rimmed baking sheet in a single layer. Freeze until just hard, about 1 hour. Transfer melon pieces to a food processor and add lime juice, sugar, thyme, ½ cup water and tequila, if desired. Pulse until smooth and slushy, scraping the sides of the bowl occasionally. Add water if you prefer a thinner consistency. Add lime juice and sugar to taste. Divide among serving glasses and garnish with thyme sprigs. Serve immediately with spoons, or let melt slightly to serve as a drink. Serves 4.

Let’s Talk Real Estate by Jean Wright, President/Broker Owner Crs, GrI
The seller’s DIsClOsure With every listing comes a form called “The Seller’s Disclosure.” This is a form that every seller must fill out and should be included with documentation. It’s a form that tells potential buyers exactly what they’re in for with the house they’re buying. While the disclosure is a great tool, it shouldn’t be your only tool. Ask the seller if they’re willing to have a home inspection done and if any defects are disclosed, that they’ll be willing to make necessary repairs. The good news is a seller’s disclosure will let you know about any defects or potential defects in a house. The bad news is that if, after closing, something happens that wasn’t listed on the form, and the seller says they were unaware of it, there’s nothing that can be done. This is why a home inspection is a great thing to invest in—as well as asking the seller to include a home warranty. If “Contingent upon satisfactory home inspection,” it’s written into the contract offered, the buyer is provided with options. With a home warranty secured and in place at the time of closing, both the buyer and the seller are protected, with just a little extra forethought and planning going into the terms of closing. Talk with your Realtor®, they’ll explain all your options! For professional advice from an experienced Realtor, call Jean Wright at (847) 217-1906 or email at jwright@jeanwright.com

Up close with Pascal Color in the Summer
In the beauty industry, color serves as a form of expression for both men and women; it ranges from soft and subtle to bold and unpredictable. In my salons, most men opt for our 10-minute gray-blending treatment, focusing on converting their “salt” to “pepper,” while leaving the temples intact to gently reduce the appearance of aging. Our female clientele opt for a broader spectrum of services and are a bit bolder with their selection. Whatever your preference, I suggest conducting some research before you commit. There are various types of color, ranging from temporary to permanent. Temporary colors deposit pigment onto the hair cuticle without penetrating. They contain no ammonia or peroxide and therefore cannot lighten hair. These semi and demi permanent options can last up to 24 shampoos. Permanent color removes pigment from hair while also depositing new color; it does not wash out, requiring root touch-ups for maintenance every 6 to 8 weeks. If you want a more dramatic change (two or more shades darker or
lighter than your natural), a permanent color is a better option and best for coloring gray hair. There are countless color techniques and applications: single process, highlighting, lowlighting and glossing. Technique is what differentiates an exceptional colorist. Marissa, a master colorist at Pascal Pour Elle in Glencoe, explains the importance of complementing hair’s texture, wave and movement when selecting a col-
“Keep in mind that protecting your hair from the elements is as critical as protecting your skin.” | Pascal oring technique. She specializes in natural coloring effects, stating, “My clients don’t want to look like they colored their hair. They want the natural enhancement and healthy shine.” For lower maintenance color, Marissa suggests the “ombre” or “balayage” techniques. Ombre, meaning to “shade” or “shadow” in French, is currently the most popular color application technique. Referring to hair color fading
from dark to light or light to dark. Instead of the color starting from the roots, it gradually becomes lighter, or darker towards ends. Balayage is also a French coloring technique, involving hand painting hair— utilizing fingers, hands or a spatula. Marissa further explains, “Historically, color application has been vertical in nature, and the recent trends are shifting to horizontal shaded bands that blend.” Keep in mind that protecting your hair from the elements is as critical as protecting your skin. A hat or scarf is the best option if you plan to spend extended time in the sun. In addition, Marissa recommends the following tips to protect color: • Avoid overexposure to the sun in general, as it is damaging to color. (Sun lightens hair, causing highlights to disproportionately lighten, leaving hair at risk for damage. Dark hair may also lighten, turning brassy or unwanted shades. • Gloss between color appointments for a shine and tone refresher • Get mini-trims to dust off frayed ends (especially in the summer) • F ully saturate your hair with clean water prior to swimming in
chlorinated or salt water, as color treated hair is sponge-like, soaking up fluid. I highly recommend working with an educated and experienced technician to select the technique and formulation that best suits your natural hair and works with your lifestyle. Chef ready to steak claim in new venture
■ by katie rose mceneely
summer sidewalk sale july 17th -19th Great Savings at Your Favorite Stores!
Chef Dominic Zumpano, formerly of Market House and MH Fish House in Lake Forest, opens P.M. Prime in Highwood this week. . What led you to open P.M. Prime? I met Steve Platcow through Jeannine Viti, the realtor for the property. At the end of last year I started looking at the space (formerly Gabriel’s). We talked and had a tremendous amount of respect for each other. Steve thought it would be a great concept — the North Shore doesn’t have a really great steakhouse. We started talking and I started doing some research, and we’re trying to put together a more contemporary, modern type steakhouse. Not that there’s anything wrong with, say, Morton’s; we want it to be more culinary driven and service-oriented.
“I’ve worked for great chefs in the past and learned a lot of styles and techniques, and I just blend them into my style.” | Dominic Zumpano Favorite cuisine to make? I don’t have one. I’m not really specific to one flavor, if you will. I’m French-trained; I’ve done Italian, Asian, American. It’s a blend of all that. There’s no one particular thing I tag myself to. There’s French techniques with Italian ingredients: umami, cured meats, those things play in both realms. I’ve worked for great chefs in the past and learned a lot of styles and techniques, and I just blend them into my style. What’s your philosophy? Very ingredient-driven. We’re sourcing the best and just doing things the way they should be done — taking timeless techniques and putting them back into play. We want to focus on the craft of cooking itself Worthwhile gadget? Spoons. We do a lot with spoons — basting, plating. It’s a more intimate way to compose dishes Favorite vegetable? In summertime, I love sweet corn. Food you hate? Canned tuna fish. I don’t think fish should come in a can. I don’t know what it is, it drives me insane — the smell, the texture. I’ve never liked it. What are you hoping to achieve with
Dominic Zumpano
P.M. Prime? We just want to focus on providing great product. Great steaks, great wine, an overall great dining experience where people can come in and feel comfortable and try things they might not normally try. We’ll have the steakhouse favorites in the wine category, but we have some things you’re not going to find at the grocery store. [Sommelier] Bob Bansberg has been doing tastings every day, and we’re looking for the right ones to accompany the food. What are you planning for the menu? One of our dishes right now is a play off the old tomato mozzarella — heirloom tomatoes, prosciutto, dehydrated olives, mozzarella ice cream. As it melts, it creates a sauce that goes with the rest of the dish. It’s going to be refreshing. We’re going to have a few dryaged cuts. All the steaks we’re using are going to be prime or domestic Wagyu, the top 1 percent, mostly sourced from a cattle ranch in California ■ P.M. Prime opens July 11 and is located at 310 Green Bay Road in Highwood. For more information, visit opentable.com/ pm-prime..

A midsummer night promises to be dreamy ■ by joanna brown
On a rainy weekend three years ago, Lake Forest resident Nancy Smith spotted an ad for a play at the Citadel Theatre. She recalls how impressed she was with the production. “At the beginning, I found it was good theater in a location five minutes from my home — and good entertainment on a Sunday afternoon,” she says. The experience so impressed Smith and her husband, Adrian, that they became patrons of the theater and friends of its founders. They’ll welcome other friends and patrons of the arts into their Mundelein retreat for an outdoor performance of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” on Saturday, July 19 to benefit the Citadel Theatre. “Guests will be entertained from the minute they arrive,” Nancy Smith says. “We’ll have tours of the five-room cottage, a dance band, costumed performers, the theater, auctions and vocal performances during dinner.” Lake Forest’s Citadel Theatre is a professional company that has offered more than 100 productions — comedies, dramas, musicals and classics — since 2002. Founders Ellen and Scott Phelps have attracted 600 subscribers since Scott left corporate America to pursue their shared passion. “This was definitely a dream, but it’s been growing more than we ever thought that it could,” says Citadel Artistic Director Scott Phelps, admitting that he’s been inspired by the success of Glencoe’s Writers Theater. “It shows me how much people want the performing arts. At the beginning, our audience was sitting in aluminum folding chairs, but they kept coming back.” The July 19 benefit will be Citadel’s first Shakespeare production. Director Frank Farrell previously worked on the Morton Arboretum’s Theater Hikes, and he has
long been preparing actors to battle the ambient noise of an outdoor stage: wind, critters and traffic in the distance. “ ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ is the most accessible piece in Shakespeare’s canon — in fact, it’s about finding a place in nature to rehearse a play for the Duke,” says Scott Phelps. “When Nancy and Adrian offered their cottage so that we could do Shakespeare outdoors under the stars — it was glorious, and we’ve already decided that we are going to a Shakespeare production every year.” The cottage is actually an 18-acre retreat atop Fort Hill, one of the highest points in Lake County. It was designed in 1920 by David Adler for Alfred Hamill of Lake Forest as a writer’s retreat; the house is surrounded by an oak savannah, vineyard, orchard, beehives and 14 acres of wildflowers. It overlooks 3,000 acres of open land. “The property is different but not unlike a vacation in France of Germany,” Nancy Smith says. “With the magic of the performance, it will feel like you’ve come alive and been on vacation.” Though it was intended as a retreat, Nancy Smith says keeping it for herself is unthinkable. She relishes the thought of fire-eaters, stilt-walkers and mandolin players entertaining the friends of Citadel Theatre. “This place is just so special; it’s not for one person or one couple,” says Smith, who is also an artist who has studied painting in France. Her work will be displayed at the cottage during the benefit. Funds raised at the event will help Citadel grow its staff and in turn the company’s educational and outreach programs. “We know how to work hard, and we know how to play hard and how to party,” Ellen Phelps says. “This will be culturally enriching and fun.” Find more information at http://citadeltheatre.org. ■

JEEPERS CREEPERS...
Loyola Academy’s Mark Dezell
how about those keepers? Lacrosse goalies collect lots of saves — and plenty of keepsakes (welts & bruises) words by bill mclean | photography by joel lerner
T
yler Vandenberg was at home when his mother, Janie, noticed prominent welts all over his arms and legs. Tyler was a lacrosse goalie for Lake Forest High School’s state semifinalist this past spring. A welt is a goalie’s bulbous badge of courage, an unwelcome and unsightly tattoo, a stinging, protruding reminder of a body save. “I was just sitting around when she pointed the welts out to me,” recalls the 6-foot-3, 220-pounder and recent graduate. “I had forgotten that I had them.
“You tolerate them; you get used to them.” Two years ago Loyola Academy lacrosse goalie Mark Dezell, another 2014 graduate, absorbed four shots to the same spot on his right leg — in one game. The blows produced a virtual mesa on his limb. “I had to get it drained at a hospital after the game,” says Dezell, who helped the Ramblers (17-5) finish second at the state tournament in May. “You see a fair amount of fast shots as a goalie, and it’s hard to stop all of them with your stick. “One former goalie at Loyola Academy told me he had
given his welts names and suggested I do that. I have never done that.” Boys lacrosse goalies everywhere hear the same question — “What in the world were you thinking when you signed up for that position?” — every spring from friends, loved ones, strangers and, occasionally, medical personnel. It’s hard for some people to understand why a seemingly sane teen — holding a stick and wearing a helmet, chest protector, gloves and little else — would attempt to stop a ball traveling 90-plus mph and not get paid a cent for doing so. goalies >> page 49

“I guess you have to be a little nuts to be a lacrosse goalie,” says Glenbrook North goalie Chad Yale, a rising senior who helped the Spartans (16-6) reach a state quarterfinal in the spring. “People think what we do is one of the scariest things in sports. At first I was scared of the ball [as a seventh-grader]. But I found out quickly you have to toughen up a little. “The most painful shot I felt was one that nailed me in a forearm,” the 5-10, 160-pounder adds. “I couldn’t hold my stick up after that one.” Jonathan Anastos insists he doesn’t feel pain after stopping fast balls with various parts of his 5-9, 180-pound frame. The rising New Trier senior and goalkeeper of the reigning state champion Trevians (18-7) says Game Day adrenaline serves as his temporary shield. “I do, though, feel it when I get hit by a ball in practice,” says Anastos, who has sustained a couple of concussions while hugging the pipe (lacrosse parlance for “protecting a side of the cage”) in the first half of his prep career. “It’s pretty crazy in goal, with everybody moving in front of
you while you’re trying to zero in and watch the ball the whole way. “If I have to use my chest to prevent a goal, I’ll do that.” An official lax ball is a rubber ball that’s “heavier than a tennis ball and lighter than a cue ball,” says Loyola’s Dezell, who, like Vandenberg, was picked to play in the 2014 Illinois High School Lacrosse Association (IHSLA) All-Star Game at Benedictine University in Lisle on June 3. “It weighs,” he adds, “about as much as a hockey puck.” Anastos’ path to becoming a lacrosse goalie started on an ice rink in the back yard of a friend’s house. A bunch of their buddies got together for a game of broomball. Anastos battled as a goalie in the pickup contest. “A friend said to me that day, ‘You should be a lacrosse goalie,’ ” recalls Anastos, a first-team all-Central Suburban pick and Lafayette College recruit. “Before then, when I was a fourth- and fifth-grader, I was pretty much like everybody else who played lacrosse — a middie. Middies just ran around.” Lake Forest High School’s Vandenberg got his first taste of goalkeeping when he was a fifth- or sixth-grader and had
to sit at a feeder team’s practice because he showed up that day without elbow pads. All field players must wear elbow pads. Goalies don’t; too restrictive. “I was there on the sideline, all alone, when my coach [Tom Walters, now a Scouts assistant] made me get in goal,” recalls the Dartmouth-bound Vandenberg. “He wasn’t too happy, seeing me there with nothing to do. “I wasn’t good at first and it was a hard position, but I kept playing the position because I enjoyed it.” Dezell was a rising eighth-grader when he thought the coolest kid ever was Gavin McGarry, then the Ramblers’ starting varsity lacrosse goalie. Dezell attended a summer camp and jumped at the chance to learn all about the dangerous position during one-on-one sessions with McGarry. “It took me a pretty long while to get accustomed to it,” the 6-2, 175-pound Dezell says. “I was pretty brutal my first year. My freshman year … not an easy year for me. Sophomore year, though, I started to fall in love with the position.” goalies >> page 50

New Trier’s
Jonathan Anastos goalies >> from 49
Glenbrook North’s Yale played in only a couple of games as a goalie his sophomore year, in 2013. Yale and the Spartans got off to an up-and-down start in ’14, going 4-3. The third setback was a 15-8 loss to Lake Forest HS on April 5. Three days later, New Trier visited Northbrook. Glenbrook North edged the eventual state champion 8-7 in three overtimes. Yale came up huge in the extra sessions. “I remember New Trier winning a lot of draws and possessing the ball [for long stretches] in the overtimes,” says Yale, a second-team all-Central Suburban selection. “That was a big win for us, after having the iffy start we had and losing attack players and some key middies [to graduation the previous year].” Yale’s voice was probably barely audible afterward. A lacrosse goalie, after all, is the “quarterback” of the defense, constantly barking all kinds of orders to his defenders,
from the alignment he wants them in to the name of the teammate who’s in the best position to help a defenseman double-team the ball carrier. As a goalie yells, attack players from the opposing team scream for the ball or shout out the play. Meanwhile, bodies from both teams are crisscrossing in blurs in front of a goalie, who is doing all he can to track a pin-balling ball and prepare to make a stick — or body — save. Keepers have no choice but to become familiar with total chaos and annoying body screens while being the last line of defense. “Our defensive system is a complex one,” says the Illinois Wesleyan-bound Dezell. “It always has been at Loyola. It’s probably similar to the defense found in some NFL playbooks. It’s so complex that our coaches make the goalies and defenders take a test at the beginning of each season to make sure we know what we have to know. “But what’s great about our program from a goalie’s
standpoint is our film staff, two phenomenal guys who do outstanding work. I was constantly learning while watching game film between games.” Dezell was adept at staying sharp in games — even when the Ramblers ran their offense on the other side of the field. He looked for the flying ball, from the moment it left a stick’s webbing to the moment it landed in another stick’s webbing. “That helped slow the game down for me, and it made the ball seem bigger,” Dezell says. Lake Forest High School’s coaching staff allowed Vandenberg to get involved on offense — as a goalkeeper. Some goalies do more than just whip clears (lengthy outlet passes) to in-stride middies and attacks. Vandenberg occasionally got the green light to cross midfield and either find a open man or take a shot. Hearing the play, “Rocket,” from a sideline meant it was all systems go for Vandenberg, ball nestled in his stick’s goalies >> page 51

webbing, to look for a seam and transition into an offensive weapon for the Scouts (20-4 in 2014). Imagine a determined, highly mobile tight end with a ball and stick — weaving around and blasting past smaller players after escaping his post near a cage — and you have a pretty good idea what defenders had to deal with when Vandenberg entered their territory. He scored a first-half goal in an 11-5 defeat of St. Viator on May 10. “That can be demoralizing for the other goalie,” says Vandenberg, who liked to look first for the opportunity to boost his assist total (and “hockey assist” total) after triggering a fast break with his legs. But nothing in a game thrills a goalie as much as a spectacular save does, especially if it’s one on a point-blank shot in the second half of a tight game. “A save,” Vandenberg says, “can completely change the momentum of the game in your team’s favor. It’s an interesting position, the goalie position. So much of it is mental; I’d put it at 90 percent. A goalie has to remember there’s absolutely nothing he can do about a goal he just gave up.
“All that matters,” he adds, “is doing whatever it takes to make the next save.” Not long after Dezell made his final save in Loyola Academy’s 10-8 defeat of Lake Forest HS and Vandenberg in a state semifinal on May 29, Vandenberg received a compliment-laden Facebook Chat from … Dezell. “A goalie takes a lacrosse loss worse than any other player does; ask any goalie,” says Dezell, a first-team all-Chicago Catholic pick. “I needed to Facebook-Chat him that day. I wanted to Facebook-Chat him that day because Tyler had a fantastic season and I wanted to make sure he knew that.” It’s certainly a tight fraternity, this battered, fearless bunch of athletes with martial-arts reflexes, middle-linebacker toughness and legs resembling oversized, bruised bananas as early as the second week of a season. The respect each boys lacrosse keeper has for other keepers runs ocean-floor deep. The position is easily one of the toughest in high school sports. “At times, after getting pelted over and over in a game, I asked myself, ‘Why am I goalie?’ ” Vandenberg admits. “The thing a goalie has to remember about lacrosse is that it’s a
sport with high-scoring games. I make mistakes; a defense makes mistakes. What is exciting for me, as a goalie, is the opportunity to bail my defense out with a save.” Former University of Maryland star goalie Brian “Doc” Dougherty played for the United States’ world championship lacrosse team in 1998. One of his attentive charges at an East Coast summer camp was Dezell. “Thinking about percentages and using them to help you; figuring out what a shooter typically wants to do in a certain situation … I learned how important those things are for a goalie,” Dezell says. “Other pieces of advice [Dougherty] gave me were, ‘Never be surprised,’ and, ‘Always know what’s going on.’ “The mind of a goalie,” he adds, “has to be strong and always ready.” The members of one of Dezell’s summer teams don’t use sticks and don’t wear helmets. The number of sensational saves Dezell has recorded for that team since the IHSLA state championship game on May 31 is dreadfully low. But that’s a good thing. The summer team is actually a staff. And Dezell is a lifeguard. ■

Model player — and citizen
Driven Joseph excelled on and off the field as a three-year starter for HP’s Giants ■ by kevin reiterman
sports@northshoreweekend.com
Make no mistake, baseball is David Joseph’s favorite pastime. He’s passionate about the game and a true defender of it. He is, what you call, a baseball apologist. But the 2014 Highland Park High School graduate does have other interests. Other diversions. Spending time with his friends is cool. Hanging out with his dad, Steve, at a local high-end car dealership? Nothing better. Picking a favorite car? “I have about five. But if I have to go with just one, it would be the Porshe 911 Turbo S,” said Joseph. “Probably, in black.” Two years ago, when he was promoted from assistant coach to head baseball coach at Highland Park HS, Dan Casey made a “sales” pitch to David Joseph. Belt high. Right down the heart of the plate. “I took David to the side, and I told him that he was the player I wanted to build the program around,” Casey said. “Which wasn’t a slight against the other guys.” But it was a conversation — and an endorsement — that spoke volumes about David Joseph. When Casey looked at his talented shortstop, he might not have seen a shiny Porsche 911 Turbo S. But he did see a player with a solid skill set and a great makeup. It’s fair to report that Joseph didn’t let him down. Character always has counted with Joseph, and he was rewarded for his integrity by winning the school’s prestigious Brian Schwartz Award. “It was unanimous,” said Casey. The guy with the Derek Jeter (D.J.) initials basically was an award waiting to happen at season’s end. He wasn’t selected to the all-league baseball team, but he was named the school’s Outstanding Male Athlete. And he also secured several other postseason baseball honors, including the team’s Andy Knotek Award — for making an impact on and off the field. “Quite a haul,” said Casey. “It’s tough knowing that I won’t be putting his name on the lineup card next year,” the HP coach added. Casey especially will miss his trusted shortstop and leadoff hitter when the postseason play rolls around. Joseph, a three-year varsity starter who played second and batted second as a sophomore, was at his best, “when the lights were on.”

In the Class 4A Libertyville Regional this past spring, the slick-fielding Joseph not only made a number of sparkling plays in the field, but he also had eight quality at-bats in two games, including two hustling doubles, two RBIs, three runs, four walks and a perfect sacrifice bunt. “I went through some tough stretches during the season,” said the 6-foot, 180-pound Joseph, who finished the season hitting .302 with seven doubles, 25 runs and 16 RBIs after batting .327 with eight doubles and 17 runs during his junior season. “But then I peaked during the playoffs.

And playoff games are what matter.” Arguably, Joseph’s all-time biggest playoff moment came during his sophomore season. And it was something to write — banner headline, bold face, all caps — home about. “He had one of the biggest at-bats in Highland Park baseball history,” said Casey. Lake Forest: July figures to be a big month for shooting guard Noah Karras. The 6-foot-4 sharpshooter, who made 51 percent of his three-point shots last winter (31-61), already has drawn the interest of one Division I school. He received a scholarship offer from the University of IllinoisChicago on June 9. “The next 20 days of AAU ball will be huge for him,” said Lake Forest HS coach Phil LaScala. “He’s on a lot of people’s radar now.” Karras has developed into an inside/outside threat. “He’s shooting the ball with a lot of confidence,” the Scouts’ coach added. And he can elevate. Dunking is part of his game. “He can put it down with two hands,” LaScala said. Fundamental U’s Mike Weinstein believes the recruiting door is wide open for Karras. “He played unbelievably for us this spring,” said Weinstein, who is preparing his travel teams for a number of high-level tournaments and showcases, including Big Foot Las Vegas on July 23-27. “I think he’s figured out how good of a player he can be. girls softball . Lake Forest Scouts: Highlighted by the outstanding pitching of Meghan Joyce and Elisa Nettesheim, the LF 14s claimed the top prize at the Northbrook Spartans Tournament. The Scouts, who are managed by Neal Kahalnik, defeated the Vernon Hills Stingers 4-1 in the Gold Bracket title game on June 29. Behind Joyce and Nettesheim, the Scouts allowed only five runs in the final four games of the tournament. In the championship, Nettesheim shut down the Stingers on three hits. She fanned nine in seven innings and worked out of a tough jam in the seventh inning to preserve the win. The offense was led by Joyce, Nettesheim, Jon’nah Williams and Sydney Martens. The Scouts topped the Glenview Titans 7-1 in the semifinal, when they put together a six-run fifth inning. The big hit belonged to Williams, who came up with a bases-clearing double. Joyce, meanwhile, allowed only one run and six hits in six innings on the mound. In the quarterfinal win over Northbrook 4-3, Catie Slaughter was clutch. She came up with the game-winning hit in the bottom of the seventh. The Scouts (22-11) also feature Tessa Bojan, Savana Drach, Ashley Dueringer, Kallin Hermann, Skye Miller, Anisha Paruchuru, Ellie
Pearson and Shannon Stowe. Neal Kahalnik who is assisted by Sammie Bloomfield and Sloane Kahalnik, has managed nine previous tournament championships with the Vernon Hills Stingers and Crystal Lake Tidal Waves.

center fielder’s head to put the Giants ahead. “That,” said Joseph, “was an awesome experience.” His success comes as no surprise to senior teammate Oren Spungen. “With baseball, you get what you put into it,” said the speedy leftfielder, who hit .325 in the No. 2 hole this spring. “And David is one who put in a lot of work. There was no way that he wasn’t going to succeed. “He also has a great baseball IQ and a high ceiling,” Spungen added. Leading off, at first, was a tough sell for Joseph, who has never looked at himself as a prototypical leadoff hitter. Kindness is one of his virtues. Patience — at the plate — not so much. “I’m pretty big on swinging at the first pitch,” said Joseph. “And that philosophy goes against what a leadoff hitter is supposed to do.” But going against the grain was Casey’s intention. “I like having an attacker lead off,” said the secondyear head coach. “Patient guys hit second.” The lineup, which featured team MVP David Hochstadt (.358 batting average, 14 doubles, 4 HRs, 34 RBIs) in the No. 3 hole, worked. The Giants won 20 games this spring after losing 20 in 2013. Joseph may not have been a model leadoff hitter. But, according to Spungen, he was the ideal teammate. “Great guy. Great sense of humor,” the teammate said. “You can talk to him about anything. “And he’s one of those guys who is nice to everyone,” Spungen added. “He Good guy, good glove: Besides being a highly touted shortstop, David Joseph earned values kindness. sunday breakfast | 63 Baseball continues to fit the Bill ■ by david sweet
Alabama Gov. George Wallace and Jim Crow laws. With the Braves lease up in County Stadium in 1965, Bartholomay and his partners agreed to depart Milwaukee. “You have to put the Atlanta move in perspective,” says Bartholomay. “ T he second year in Milwaukee, we weren’t drawing well. All the great players — Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Jackie Robinson — had come from the South. But there were no pro teams playing down there.” Because of litigation, the Braves didn’t move until 19 6 6 .
Sitting down in a booth at Deca in the Ritz-Carlton Chicago, Bill Bartholomay has just returned to town after catching a ride on Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig’s plane. The previous evening, Bartholomay — chairman emeritus of the Atlanta Braves — was ensconced at the MLB Network studios in Secaucus, N.J. where the baseball draft took place. Surrounded by general managers and scouts, he was one of the few — if not the only — owner in attendance. “Each team has a telephone and 10 minutes on the clock,” explains Bartholomay, a 1955 graduate of Lake Forest College. “We have a wish list. But because of our success, we get low draft choices or none at all.” The Braves’ list of achievements in the past quarter century — which includes 14 straight division titles and one World Series championship — is in due in no small part to Bartholomay, though he would readily deflect the credit. His passion for all things baseball is evident as he talks between bites of a sandwich along with fruit at the Ritz, and the title of chairman emeritus (often just an honorary nod to executives who have retired) is revealed to be as accurate as a wild pitch. This spring, he traveled to Australia to take part in the first baseball Opening Day down there. He points out that Panama is the new Dominican Republic in terms of baseball talent. He follows the fortunes of each Brave intently and proclaims of their shortstop, “Andrelton Simmons may be the next Ozzie Smith.” Bartholomay — who will happily attend the National Baseball Hall of Fame ceremonies this summer, where former Braves Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine and Bobby Cox all will be inducted — has spent more than half a century in baseball. The North Shore Country Day School graduate who captained its basketball team (“That was my worst sport — I wanted to be captain of the baseball team”) served on the board of the Chicago White Sox when it was owned by the Comiskey family. But after 54 percent of the team was bought by a consortium consisting of Bill Veeck and others in the late 1950s, he, Lake Forest’s Potter Palmer and others sold their 46 percent share to that group. “I wasn’t happy about it,” Bartholomay says. “The White Sox experience was bittersweet.” In 1962 — only seven years out of college — Bartholomay made a play to buy the Milwaukee Braves Owned by Lou Perini, who had moved the team from Boston in 1953, Bartholomay had heard rumors the Perinis were getting no financial benefit from the team. Tapped by his investor group, Bartholomay headed to Framingham, Mass., to visit Perini at the construction company he ran. “I hung around his office for a couple of days,” Bartholomay recalls. “The only person I stalked in my life was Mr. Perini. Finally, his secretary took pity on me.” After speaking with Perini and then meeting with him a week later in Toronto, the Braves’ owner said if Bartholomay brought a cashier’s check to New Bill Bartholomay York worth $6.2 million in three days, they had a deal. “I was about $500,000 short,” Bartholomay recalls. “I went to the Northern Trust. They gave me $600,000 — they said the extra $100,000 was in case Bartholomay still vividly rememI made a mistake.” bers Opening Day on April 12 that year. “I was disappointed because we lost the game in extra In New York, Bartholomay carried two checks — one innings,” he says. “But it was great. The whole city was worth $6.2 million and one worth $5.6 million. Perini electrified.” opened the envelope to the second one. “I thought he would blow up,” Bartholomay says. “I said, Despite some middling Braves’ teams in the interim, ‘I want to pick your brain. I want you to stay. the city — and the nation — was electrified eight years “He started crying and said, ‘No one’s ever asked me to later when Hank Aaron smacked his 715th home run, topstay in anything.” ping Babe Ruth’s record that was considered unbreakable. Named the team’s chairman, Bartholomay was quickly “I was sitting in the front row with Hank’s mother and father,” Bartholomay recalls. “There’s a place where you approached about moving to Atlanta. At the 1963 All-Star Game in Cleveland, Dr. Martin Luther King, the president go beyond adrenaline — I carried his mother above the of Coca-Cola and others told him they were building a $20 barrier and onto the field after he hit it.” In 1976, media mogul Ted Turner bought the Braves, million stadium and wanted to recruit a pro baseball and pro football team. They wanted Atlanta to be the capital and Bartholomay remained as chairman while also of the New South — a city not associated with people like being tapped as vice chairman of Turner Broadcasting.
Suddenly, the Braves gained national popularity by being shown on a cable network while Turner’s station benefitted from a wealth of sports programming. The flamboyant new owner once entered the dugout to serve as manager. Had Bartholomay ever considered that? “I never wanted to manage — second-guess, yes,” he says. “I never went into the dugout during the game. But it’s tempting.” Though the Braves first quarter century in Atlanta was unremarkable, once Bartholomay and his team hired John Schuerholz as general manager in 1990, its fortunes changed. Concentrating on internal development of players, the Braves become a model of winning. “We felt that Georgia within a 100-mile radius of Atlanta was fertile ground to find and develop players,” Bartholomay says. “We use a blend of analytics and troops on the ground. Free agents and trades have been to plug a hole.” In his spare time away from the game, Bartholomay is a trustee of the Illinois Institute of Technology, the Museum of Science and Industry, the Adler Planetarium and the Lincoln Park Zoo. He also serves as vice chairman of insurance-brokerage firm Willis Group Holdings. Looking toward the future of baseball, Bartholomay — who ran the baseball tournament during the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta — is optimistic. “International, that’s where the real play is. We may have an opener in London in the next few years. The 800-pound gorilla is China. “ The minor leagues are stronger than ever. We can’t let ticket prices get out of control. People talk about the (lengthening) time of the game, but one of the beauties is there’s no clock. If you win, everybody’s happy.” Bartholomay is one of the few men alive who has known every baseball commissioner (the position was created in 1920 after the illustration by barry blitt Black Sox scandal). When former Cubs owner William Wrigley hosted softball games at his estate in Lake Geneva, Bill — age 2 — even sat on the knee of the game’s first, Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis. Asked about the best commissioner he’s seen, he praises all but selects Bud Selig, who is retiring in January. “He’s been the most dominant in terms of expanding the game internationally, getting new stadiums built, helping the growth of the minor leagues,” Bartholomay says. “All have made contributions, but none have done it like Bud Selig.” And on Tuesday, he’ll see the commissioner again at the All-Star game at Target Field in Minnesota. Says Bartholomay, ”It’s great to have players, owners, sponsors, fans and various luminaries all get together at the halfway point of the season. I like the camaraderie.” ■
