he name North Shore exists because of Chicago. It’s so big and important, the suburbs near the lake heading toward Wisconsin are merely considered a grouping of towns in the shadow of skyscrapers So it behooves North Shore residents — especially since a train ride is no more than an hour from the farthest village — to visit Chicago whenever possible. Recently, I went with my 11-year-old daughter Hannah, and we jumped on a boat for a 75minute Chicago River architectural cruise.Talk about a great way to see a city admired worldwide for its architecture and to learn about its history. Starting just west of Navy Pier, all of a sudden we were engulfed by towering buildings on either side. Watching the El chug by over the traffic on Wells Street, while pedestrians waved from the drawbridge, is a sight unique to the Windy City. We found out that what separates modern buildings from, say, the Wrigley Building is a lack of ornamentation, saw where Mrs. O’Leary’s cow kicked over the lantern — and enjoyed a view of the Willis Tower (once the world’s tallest, it only ranks 10th these days) in the reflection of another building. of progress was evident: The monstrous Old Chicago Main Post Office is abandoned and looked it, and we were told it’s mainly used for Hollywood filming, including two “Batman” movies. The new boat featured benches with flexible backs, a comfort I had never experienced. Though it drizzled intermittently and was chilly for a July day (a chicago surprise to most passengers, who were bedecked in 773 404 2020 shorts), the crew offered panchos to all. To stay warm, my daughter ordered a hot chocolate, while I opted for a vodka and cranberry — only $5, a price never seen on land. The architectural cruise is but one of the great 7.11.14 BSM NSW Bastille Day.indd activities available in the summer downtown. It’s always good to remember how fortunate we are to live near a vibrant American city. Enjoy the weekend.

Great outdoors Pools, patios are full of splendor on North Shore
300 Birch Street, Winnetka
■ by bill mclean A few guests arrive at a beautiful house on the North Shore and sit on a piece of furniture that’s fresh off a House Beautiful magazine shoot. A flat screen television, built snugly into a wall, is on. Pizza aroma wafts and makes the guests’ stomachs growl. Thirty minutes later two of the guests stand up, briefly disrupting the pillows on the couch. Time for some fresh air, right? Not quite. All of the guests in the scenario have been outdoors — on a patio — since their arrival. At a time when indoor basketball courts at homes are steadily supplanting makeshift hoops courts on driveways, homeowners are spilling parts of their great-looking interior to their great outdoors onto surfaces like bluestone
and terrazzo. “Patios are becoming outside family rooms,” says Greg Fisher, a broker at @properties in Highland Park. “So much goes on outside when the weather is nice. People are entertaining out there, while using an outdoor kitchen, grill or oven. And pools aren’t just for swimming; the pool area is becoming more of a spa area. “The word,” he adds, “is ‘extension.’ What you see outside of a home looks a lot like what’s inside that home.” Elegant furniture is finally getting its day in the sun. Make that, DAYS in the sun. “Upscale pieces of furniture in outside spaces … I started seeing that in patio areas about five to seven years ago,” says Susan Maman, a broker at @properties in Winnetka. “People are doing more things than ever out there, spending more time in an elaborate area in a [summer] season
that sometimes doesn’t last very long.” Decks were trendy escapes from the indoors 20 years ago, notes Blanche Romey, a broker at Coldwell Banker in Winnetka. They’ve essentially been decked — by patios. “Patios are hot now,” Romey says. “I’ve seen patios surrounded by beautiful gardens … gardens that have a European look, a European feel. People like that. Sitting walls in patio areas are visually appealing and useful, especially when a lot of people are over. “One of the common questions I get asked about a patio area is the condition of the patio’s surface. They typically ask, ‘Is it too lumpy?’ Patios and pool areas are really important to homeowners.” Homeowners have broadened the use of smart home technology to control what goes on outdoors, meaning their pools >> page 12

thumbs get a well-deserved break from all that iPhone usage and their index fingers get to tap-tap another gadget. “Keypads are now in changing rooms [near outdoor pools],” says Jeannie Kurtzhalts, a broker at @properties in Winnetka and Glenview. “It’s there where a homeowner can adjust the lights near the pool or maybe warm up the pool a half hour before swimming. You can turn on a pool’s fountain with the keypad. You also can use it to put a rectangular pool to bed at night,
setting the automatic pool cover in motion. “You’re not going to believe me when I say this,” she adds, “but I found more homeowners installed outdoor pools when the market was down. They wanted to stay at home instead of traveling all over the world for a family vacation; they wanted their own little Four Seasons Hotel experience at home.” Folks want privacy when they’re splishsplashing in glass-tiled pools (salt-water versions continue to rise in popularity) or using a patio area to entertain family and friends.
Or reading a book in shade provided by an ivy-covered pergola. That’s when a creative landscape architect enters the picture. “Homeowners want these spaces to be intimate places,” says Steve Kooyenga, a senior landscape architect at Chalet Nursery in Wilmette. “We address their concerns when we meet with them and suggest ways to ensure their privacy. A strategically placed tree provides that; it also could create necessary shade for parts of a patio space. “The last thing you want to do at home in
the middle of the summer,” he adds, “is head indoors to seek relief from areas that are too hot because they don’t have enough shade.” The thing homeowners want more than anything else in their outdoor spaces is balance: some sun, some shade; a couch here, a sitting wall there; a tranquil waterfall to the right; the enticing sound of a hot tub’s jets to the left. “People are creating an oasis for entertaining outside the home,” says Mary Ann Kollar, a broker at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices KoenigRubloff Realty Group in Lake Forest. ■

A Caribbean gem looks to bounce back
Little Bay will be the spot of the new capital city of Montserrat.
■ by david sweet
Restoring the North Shore for 75 Years
Almost 20 years since a volcano erupted and destroyed its capital city, Montserrat — a British overseas territory in the Caribbean — is gearing up to revive its economy and attract tourists. By 2020, Montserrat hopes to build a 100-room hotel on a beach, 20 condominiums with pools, a port for yachts and more in a new capital city. The initial underpinnings — including water pipes and the like — has been underwritten by the British government and is completed. “We’re getting the word out that Montserrat is open for business,” says Ayiesha de Coteau, Montserrat Development Corporation’s director of trade and investment promotion, who visited Chicago and the North Shore recently. “People are eager to be part of this new capital.” The city will be set on the island’s northwest side at a spot called Little Bay — far from the volcano, which is behind a set of hills on the south end and whose lava buried the former capital city of Plymouth. Monitored by the Montserrat Volcanic Observatory, its hazard level is a 2 on a scale of 1-5, meaning it is not considered a danger at the moment. De Coteau expects condominiums to be offered at $1 million-$2 million apiece. They will be 3-4 bedrooms, run up to 3,200 square feet and mostly offer Caribbean views. She says fresh water is abundant within Montserrat’s verdant forests, and electricity
costs will be low thanks to geothermal energy. “I think it will be luxury, exquisite,” says de Coteau, who grew up on Trinidad. “It presents the opportunity to see something from the ground up.” Featuring pristine hiking, underwater caves and
“I think it will be luxury, exquisite. It presents the opportunity to see something from the ground up.” | Ayiesha de Coteau black-sand beaches, Montserrat was settled mainly by the Irish many centuries ago, which explains why it celebrates St. Patrick’s Day. The 10-mile-long island has been popular among musicians such as Eric Clapton and Elton John; Dire Straits recorded “Brothers in Arms” there. Famed Beatles producer Sir George Martin still owns a house on a street named Penny Lane on the island (population: 5,000), which is close to Antigua in the West Indies. De Coteau is optimistic the tranquil island will draw many investors and regain its luster. “After two hours of sleep in Montserrat, you fell like you’ve slept the whole day,” she says. “It’s quiet and quaint.”■

Forest BluFF ConduCted sales, llC
by joel lerner
■ by katie rose mceneely Gridley Swanton is the market manager at Lake Bluff’s Farmers Market. Reading: I’m sort of a periodical reader—“AllRecipes,” “Gourmet,” “Architectural Digest.” Listening: I listen to Sirius Radio in my car. I listen to a variety of music on my iPod. I listen to Josh Groban, rock ‘n roll from the ‘50s, some Irish music. I like Willie Nelson. Watching: I watch “Chicago Tonight” and “Check, Please!” on Friday nights. I’m not a big TV watcher.
to make sure there’s a variety each week. I love being out there with the people — of course I love the products we have. I will say that five o’clock in the morning comes early for me! I have to be there by six. It’s a wonderful event and I like being part of it. Half of it is the location; it’s at the Gazebo area, it’s grass and trees and there are tables and chairs to eat at. We think we have the best market around, but we’re prejudiced. Eating: I will tell you, from being at the market every week, you do tend to eat better. I’m not a vegetarian, but I enjoy them fresh. “I’m not a vegetarian, but I enjoy them fresh. After you’ve been to the market and had them all summer, you get in the habit.” | Gridley Swanton My husband watches it, and I sort of watch haphazardly — I’m not hooked on anything. I’m more of a project person.. Following: I watch the news. But I’m not watching any particular story on a day-to-day basis. I watch local news, world news. I’m not watching any political campaign in particular at the moment. Lake Bluff Farmers Market: I work to organize the market. The market has a committee, and that committee reviews applications of vendors who want to come to the market. We choose them based on variety, quality of product. When that group is chosen, I make sure on opening day that they know where to park, where to set up. I alleviate any issues they may have as to where they are or what they’re doing. And when I’m at the market, I’m an arm of the village of Lake Buff. I have a little tent. I answer any questions about the community; I’m the go-to person. I organize the musicians that come,
the market and had them all summer, you get in the habit. I like to cook. I try about anything. I prefer French-Italian-American. If we go out, we eat locally out; I buy things made in stores that are local. I’m pretty good, I’ll go from a hot dog to a filet. We love when you can get the product at the market. What is your favorite mistake? My best-worst something I didn’t do that I thought I should —w hich I guess is a mistake — I had the opportunity to go to law school when I got out of college. I thanked my father very nicely, but I didn’t go. In retrospect, I wish I had: not that I wanted to stand up and be a trial attorney, but attorneys have a way of thinking. They’re quicker in the mind, at thinking on their feet. I’ve thought about that over the years. But I don’t dwell on it anymore. And I didn’t have a good reason why I didn’t go, other than I had just gotten out of school and I didn’t want to go back into a classroom right then. ■

Designer updates a Quirky Victorian house
Though built 130 years ago, the generous openings between the rooms make for an almost open plan, perfect for entertaining. In the living room, chairs positioned around a re-purposed ottoman are a refreshing alternative to the usual sofa-coffee table-chairs combination.

■ by thomas connors
“It had crazy, crazy brown shag carpet when we bought it,” recalls the homeowner. “When we took that up, I must have pulled 1,600 staples from the foyer floor alone. “In the first stages of renovation, we were so naïve. We jacked up the house and the plaster cracked and we had to redo all the walls. My parents came out and slept on an air mattress and helped us.” For all the changes the 130-year-old residence has experienced over the years, thanks to Edelmann’s understated touch and the presence of the homeowners’ family treasures, this is one house that wears its history well. Wide openings linking one room to another make for a fluid layout, which Edelmann enhanced with wall colors in a soothing spectrum of gray. She highlighted the handsome millwork with crisp, white paint and punctuated the various spaces with an array of unique pieces: a lamp made from an architectural fragment; a dining table sporting silver-leafed metal legs; and a top spun from rough hewn wood. Art work by family members — her great uncle’s watercolors and marine pictures by his grandfather, Marshall Woodside Joyce — share wall space with pieces the couple’s three children have created. In the parlor, which overlooks the much-used front porch, bookshelves display a panoply of well-loved items, from pieces of coral to vintage volumes of the Bobbsey Twins stories. “My husband’s grandmother gave us a huge ceramic lamp in bright colors that sat in a closet forever,” relates the homeowner. “I loved it, but didn’t know what to do with it, until Julia pulled it out and put it on a table in the foyer. I love that we’re around it and we use it every day.” ■
Sometimes, home design is like comfort food. We surround ourselves with things that are familiar but, like artery-clogging macaroni and cheese in a healthy age, are no longer what we really need — especially when moving from an apartment to a house with more space than we know what to do with. That was the case when one couple settled into a gracious Queen Anne/Eastlake residence in Evanston. What seemed grown-up and oh-so-appropriate soon grew stodgy and stale. “We went from a one-bedroom to this house, and the things I had chosen when we moved in looked old as I grew older,” admits the homeowner. “I wanted something fresher, more vibrant for our family now.” With a new addition to the home completed, the time was right to do something about those less-than-winning rooms. Turning to interior designer Julia Edelmann — who has a passion for investing older properties with a contemporary essence —the homeowners transformed their surroundings without sacrificing any historic appeal. “I am in the people business,” says Edelmann, “and the first thing I have to do is understand what makes the client tick. This client was very down-to-earth. I think even hiring a designer was hard for her. She’s not at all frivolous and did not want to appear as such, running out and buying all new things. She really wanted to keep as much of what she had as she could. She had two comfy chairs in the parlor, so I had two more made, and we put them in the living room with new fabric. This allowed her to feel more comfortable with the whole idea of redecorating.” Even so, as Edelmann admits, steering her client to the best choice wasn’t always smooth sailing. While the two agreed that the existing chairs could stay once they were re-upholstered, the client wasn’t immediately sold on the idea of having two more made to replace the sofa. “My idea was you don’t have the sofa in the corner This silver-leafed, forged iron Annie Selke dining table and the two chairs and a features two separate demilune consoles at either end coffee table in between,” that can be removed and used elsewhere when the ocrelates Edelmann. “But the casion arises. idea of just four chairs was a bit of a challenge. It took me a while to get her there.” Laughing, the homeowner agrees. “Victorian houses are tricky. Sometimes, the rooms are narrow or, in this case, oddly shaped. We’ve tried the sofa in the middle of the room; we tried it in the window bay. Over the years, I had rearranged that room three or four different ways. And while it looked okay, it just didn’t work. “But now, with the chairs focused toward the center of the room, the space is really comfortable, perfect for conversation.” Before the couple bought the house 16 years ago, it had sat empty for a year and needed work.

my favorite weekend Carrie and Hugh are dedicated to Misercordia
Carrie and Hugh Connolly spend many weekends in Chicago. But they’re not enjoying a romantic dinner by the lake or a night at a boutique hotel — they’re visiting Misercordia Home, which supports more than 600 children and adults with disabilities. Hugh’s brother, Brian, lives there. “He and I shared a bedroom together growing up,” Hugh says. “I saw first-hand what his needs were, what his challenges were.” In 2003, Carrie and Hugh got together with another couple and formed the Heartlinks Golf Outing, an annual event to raise money for Misercordia. What made it unique, they say, was that it involved the entire North Shore — not just one community. Including the event on Tuesday at Shoreacres and Onwentsia, it has raised more than $3 million over the years. Both Connollys point out friends and family offer plenty of help around the golf event. At the same time, both Hugh’s birthday and the couple’s anniversary get postponed as they work to make it go smoothly.Hugh and Carrie both volunteer at the bakery that sits on the 30-acre site. They’ve seen Misercordia grow from a few dozen children to a vibrant community on Chicago’s North Side. But the reality is, everyone is living there for the long haul. “They’ll always be dependent on others for their well-being,” Carrie says. With a home in Lake Geneva, Carrie and Hugh have discussed holding a fundraiser up there as well. They are constantly promoting Misercordia. And it’s all worth it Says Hugh, “We find a way to make their lives better.” David Sweet ■
Hugh and Carrie Connolly of Lake Forest founded the Heartlinks Golf Outing, which raised more than $300,000 this year for Misericordia Home.

wines of the week ■ by johnson ho An obscure culinary trivia: the term BBQ is a French term (“Barbe-Queue”) meaning “from beard to tail”. This American cooking tradition dates back to the early fur traders, many of them Arcadians (French Canadian refugees who eventually migrated to Louisiana and built New Orleans). Pere Marquette and General Lafayette introduced more French table savoir faire to this nation along the way. Even the Founding Fathers — especially Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin — were noted French wine lovers and collectors. The fondness for wine flourished when the ancient Gauls learned that meats marinated in wine did not spoil for weeks and became more tender along the way. The rest is cuisine history. A votre sante!
SATURDAY DINNER
2005 Chateau de Chatelet, St. Emilion Grand Cru, Bordeaux, France; $70
The state of Bordeaux lies on the Atlantic coast of southwestern France, at the crossroads of Celtic tribes migrating to Spain or to the British isles, Greek fishermen seeking refuge from storms, unsavory pirates from the Mediterranean and native Gallic farmers. This melange of tribal warriors and invaders by sea created a rustic cuisine based on hearty fish, mutton or beef. The often-powerful red wines of the region are usually based on blends of the Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes that benefit from 6-30 years of cellaring and about an hour of decanting. Classic pairings include grilled tuna, beef and lamb recipes, heavy stews and hearty cheeses. This chateau (estate) is a rising star of the region and a relative bargain.

FISH HOUSE PUNCH
Makes about 10 cups Active time: 15 min Start to finish: 8‰ hr (includes making ice block) This punch—containing rum, Cognac, and peach brandy—is potent. If it packs a bit too much of a wallop for your taste, you can dilute it with cold black tea, a common mixer for this particular punch, or with seltzer water, for a bit of fizz. Some punch bowls may not be big enough to accommodate the size ice block we call for—feel free to use other freezing containers that are more suitably shaped. And though the block is a classic part of this recipe, you can, of course, simply serve the punch in a pitcher over ice cubes. 1 cup sugar 3‚ cups water 1‚ cups fresh lemon juice (6 to 8 lemons), strained 1 (750-ml) bottle Jamaican amber rum 12 oz Cognac (1‚ cups) 2 oz peach brandy (‰ cup) Special equipment: a ‚-gallon cardboard juice or milk carton, top (spout) end cut off Garnish: lemon slices To make ice block, fill carton with water and freeze until solid, about 8 hours (see cooks’ note, below). Stir together sugar and 3-1⁄2 cups water in a large bowl or pot until sugar is dissolved. Add lemon juice, rum, Cognac, and brandy and chill, covered, at least 3 hours. Put ice block in a punch bowl and pour punch over it.
The sublime Pinot Noir grape-based reds of the Burgundy region in northeastern France possess the reputation for finesse, elegance, sublime aromas and glove-leather texture. Ever since Julius Caesar discovered them in 50 B.C., they have graced the banquet tables of European aristocracy and royalty. Contrary to the wide-spread myth that red Burgundies are “hearty” or big, they are actually intended to serve as sophisticated palate cleansers with opulent and mild dishes, especially with reduction sauces or mushroom recipes. Veal, pork, poultry, rabbit, escargot, salmon and foie gras dishes shine with this wine. Decant for about 30 minutes.

Simonet Febvre Cremant de Bourgogne Brut, Burgundy, France; $19
Unlike the Sparkling Burgundy and Cold Duck of yore — the sweet, bubbly Californian plonk of prom-night dinners of the 60’s and 70’s — the real sparkling wines of Burgundy are based on the Chardonnay or Pinot Noir grapes and must meet fairly high quality standards. The term “Brut” refers to a government regulated sweetness level: “brut-ally dry” or not discernibly sweet. They are clean, crisp, delightful and display hints of citrus, apple, pear aromas for the Chardonnay-based version, to a hint of nectarine, wild strawberry aromas for the Pinot Noir-based version. A mere one hour drive south of the Champagne region, the Cremant de Bourgogne costs a mere fraction of their prestigious neighbor, making it the prime choice for casual cocktail sipping, minor celebrations or mixing with fresh fruit purees, e.g. strawberry, peach or nectarines. Chill in ice water for 20 minutes before serving. Send your questions to wines@jwcmedia.com

IF YOU’RE PLANNING to keep a crowd cool and refreshed this summer but would like to avoid the intricacies of a full bar, you may want to scour the very back reaches of your closets for that longforgotten punch bowl. In The Food Chronology, James Trager notes that one
of the first punches was concocted in 1599by the commander in chief of the Royal Navy. Among the ingredients he cites were 80 casks of brandy, 80 pints of lemon juice, 1,300 pounds of sugar, and 25,000 limes. It was prepared in a large basin by ships’ boys who
worked 15-minute shifts “to avoid getting drunk from the fumes.” This Fish House Punch— named after the Philadelphia fishing club where it was first served in 1732—has slightly fewer ingredients but will still provide a potent centerpiece for any party. Our recipe
from August 1962 (page 122) calls for a large floating ice block to help temper the effects of three different kinds of liquor. It also lowers the fume level, so your active preparation time has been reduced to just one 15-minute shift. -- Lawrence Karol

love & marriage
Husbands look good in comparison to fictional characters ■ by joanna brown If you haven’t enjoyed breakfast at Leonida’s Chocolate Cafe in Northbrook, make time for it soon. A chocolatebanana crepe and café au lait make for a beautiful start to most any Sunday. A friend and I made just those plans a few weekends ago, but as I was arriving she called to say she was running late. Her excuse was not unexpected: her delay was entirely her husband’s fault. Upon her arrival we quickly launched into a game of oneupsmanship: whose husband is the bigger knucklehead. It was close, but in the end my breakfast companion won. While my husband does dumb things more frequently, her husband does them on a grander scale, leaving a greater wake. The truth is that both our husbands are good men: professionally successful and well educated, regular guys with loving families and loyal friends. We do not tell them often enough how much we appreciate them. When we need a reminder of just how good they are, we need not look beyond pop culture. Television, books and movies are full of admirable people who are otherwise totally un-marriable. Consider these three examples: Health inspectors In a 1998 episode of the television series “Friends” (it will live forever in reruns), Phoebe scores a date with a New York City health inspector. She quickly determines that the health inspector is a nice guy and diligent professional, but he finds enough code violations to shut down
every restaurant they go to. I’m all for heath standards and conscientious public employees, but I also like to enjoy a good night out, away from the demands of my job, while other people take care of me. The health inspector is a great friend, but a horrible date. Private investigators “The Spellman Files” by Lisa Lutz is a light-hearted summer read about a family of private investigators. They’re a loving bunch, but the reality is that they all spend their days pretending to be people other than themselves. They are masters of disguise and deception (which makes for a funny plot), and they artfully evade answering questions. When the 28-year-old daughter of the firm’s founders declines to answer questions about her new boyfriend, these veteran investigators rely on their professional skills and tools of the trade to get answers. The lack of honesty and total disregard for personal boundaries would scare me away from any kind of romance with any of the Spellmans. Jack Bauer If you’ve watched any of the Fox series “24,” you know that this rebel counter-terrorism agent is invaluable to our national security. He has risked everything for the good of this country, with absolutely no regard for his personal safety. For that reason, the nine longest days of his life have had me sitting on the edge of my couch and cheering for his success. But the risks he takes are off the charts, with consequences I cannot tolerate. Few women need to, however, because the objects of his affection all find unfortunate
fates: kidnapping, nervous breakdowns, death. I love him, but I could never be in love with him. Tell me what television or literary character you find most un-marriable at joanna@northshoreweekend.com. ■

New medical spa works on everything under the sun
Aesthetician Haley Newberger and Dr. Ben Schlechter.
photography by joel lerner ■ by sheryl devore
It’s a mantra heard summer after summer — yet it bears repeating. “The No. 1 way to take care of your skin in summer is to use sunscreen,” said Ivy Schlechter — even when driving or going outdoors to run an errand.
Schlechter co-owns North Shore Aesthetics in Northbrook with her husband, Dr. Benjamin Schlechter, a board-certified plastic surgeon. They opened the surgical unit and medical spa near the North Shore this year after running a similar practice in Philadelphia for 19 years. They maintain both practices, traveling between towns. Ivy said the new office in Illinois allows them to be close to their children who live and work in the Chicago area. North Shore Aesthetics encompasses 4,800 square feet where clients receive cosmetic as well as medically necessary plastic and reconstructive surgery and skin care treatments from facials to peels. Since the practice opened in January, Ivy said she, her husband and the aestheticians have noticed a difference between their Pennsylvania and Illinois clients. “We are seeing more significant sun damage here than we do in Pennsylvania,” she said. It’s likely because more North Shore residents travel to warm places in winter where their skin gets damaged by the sun, she added. At North Shore Aesthetics, a special device can be used to show sun damage beneath the top layer of the skin. Even if it’s not on the surface today, that damage will appear as you age, Schlechter said. “We used to say we can stop the progression of skin damage, but today we can actually reverse it,” she said. “Now we can do DNA repair — either quickly with laser treatments or more slowly with products.” Schlechter, however, would prefer to educate clients about ways to keep skin from getting damaged — and that’s why she constantly stresses using sunscreen. Choose sunscreens that are labeled as broad spectrum SPV 45 and that filter out both UVA and UVB rays, she said. “Men need to use sunscreen, too,” Ivy said, even when
they’re driving. The left side of the face typically has more sun damage than the right side, and that’s because of driving without sunscreen. Staff aesthetician Haley Newberger added those who are at the pool or the beach should reapply the sunscreen every hour. “There’s also makeup with sunscreen,” she suggested. Some drugstore brands, however, add filler ingredients, so read the labels, she noted. Hyd r at ion i s a l s o c r uc i a l i n su m mer. “Drink lots of water and eat healthy to promote healthy skin,” Newberger said. Cigarette smoking and pollution can also damage skin, she added.
“We used to say we can stop the progression of skin damage, but today we can actually reverse it.” | Ivy Schlechter Vitamin C can benefit the skin, Schlechter said. “Everyone should be using it. It helps with DNA repair. But not all vitamin C products are created equal. The key is to use a product that doesn’t have additives in it — and mostly those can only be found at medical skin care spas.” Not every skin issue needs to be complicated. “To get rid of wrinkles around the eyes, you don’t necessarily need Botox. Try drinking extra water and using moisturizer,” Schlechter said. North Shore Aesthetics offers a free facial and consultation for first-time clients. ART REVIEW
96-year-old weaver’s work graces The Art Institute ■ by s.h. sweet Ethel Stein is a 96-year-old wunderkind weaver who still works every day. In June, The Art Institute of Chicago opened the first retrospective of her work from 1982-2008. Stein boarded a train and came with her son, daughter-in-law, granddaughter and an entourage of friends and neighbors from Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y. for the event. In 1941, she took a course from Josef Albers of Bauhaus fame and was influenced throughout her life by his “powerful teaching” to become interested in “geometric shapes, spatial relationships, and color juxtapositions” according to Daniel Walker, the chair and curator of textiles at The Art Institute. Walker introduced Stein, extolling her “contemporary aesthetic in an ancient form” and calling her a “weaver’s weaver” — but added that Stein thought this sounded too elitist. He noted that she is only now getting the recognition she richly deserves. Stein began as a wood sculptor until, as she responded when asked how she became a weaver, she was carving a block of cherry wood that was taller than she was and her neck seized up. Needing a new way of expressing herself, she was happy when, in the 1960s, a colleague lent her a small loom to try weaving. She began to learn this craft, gradually increasing the size and complexity of her loom. She also visited European collections and studied the historic textiles at the Cooper Hewitt Museum in New York to discern the structures of the pieces.
“I can attest to being fascinated enough to stare and try to imagine how one could even begin to create such beauty.” By the 1970s, Stein wanted a more complex instrument for her work so she purchased a counter march loom and, through modifications, made it a draw loom. The draw loom was developed to create intricately patterned fabrics probably in Asia for use on silk, and was used in Italy as early as the Middle Ages. Best known for producing the fabric damask, the draw loom was mechanized beginning in the early 1800s. However, Stein’s draw loom has not been mechanized. Fortunately, for anyone who has no idea what a draw loom might be or how one uses it, Mark Chamberlain recently made a video showing Stein dyeing her own yarn, planning her own work, and flawlessly executing masterpieces of woven art on her giant draw loom. In the video — running in a loop as part of the exhibit — you can see some of her sketches and design patterns that became works of art, all in her beloved damask. Stein’s design work on her draw loom matches the complexity of her instrument. Among the exhibit’s 39 offerings (34 of which Stein donated to the museum and one of which was

purchased for the collection by the Nicole Williams Contemporary Textile Fund in 1985) are a self-portrait, a political statement about a power plant near her home and many intricate damask patterns ranging from monochromatic to the wildly colorful. It is worth taking the time to closely examine Stein’s work. At first glance it might appear simple, but on further scrutiny, one cannot help but admire how exquisite and complicated the work truly is. The sophistication of some of Stein’s pieces may be best understood and appreciated by a person well versed in the craft of weaving, Walker noted. But I can attest to being fascinated enough to stare and try to imagine how one could even begin to create such beauty. Victoria Frank, president of the Textile Society (an affiliate group, open to new members, that supports the textile department at the museum), enjoyed being in such a textile-friendly group at the opening party the society sponsored for more than 100 people. “The artwork of Ms. Stein is nothing short of spectacular,” she says. “Although ‘spectacular’ may be an odd word to describe her work since it is subtle, the precision is remarkable while the expression is quiet and refined.“ Considering that it is only the last half of her life that Stein has thus far devoted to weaving, those of us who witnessed her work in the exhibition at the Art Institute are thrilled she finally got hold of a loom. And while Stein may consider her age irrelevant, you have to marvel that this utterly delightful woman is still so creative at age 96. The exhibit runs until Nov. 9 in the newly renovated Agnes Allerton Gallery and the Elizabeth F. Cheney Gallery downstairs at The Art Institute of Chicago. ■

“Sondra did a wonderful job selling our home—we would highly recommend her. She listened to what our goals were, was very professional, supportive and optimistic. She knows the Lake Forest market well and what buyers are looking for. A big asset is currently having her own children at the elementary, middle and high school she could offer great insight in selling our schools to any potential family buyer.” -L.G.

Hard-hitting Zordani sisters turn in upper-crust performance in doubles at Midwest Closed ■ by bill mclean
sports@northshoreweekend.com Both Zordani tennis sisters nailed it. Not a forehand down the line. Not an overhead smash. Not a serve. Elizabeth and Christina Zordani aced a … peach pie. In a “road” kitchen, no less. They teamed up to bake the scrumptious dessert last year at the home of Zoe Park, one the Zordanis’ Lake Forest High School teammates. “We picked the peaches in an orchard,” recalls Elizabeth, a 2014 LFHS graduate. “The crust turned out golden. “It tasted great,” she adds. “It was the first time we’d baked such a pie. And the last time. We’ve moved on.” The member of three state championship teams in four years laughs. So does Christina Zordani (LFHS, ’16), the shyer of the pair and half of the state doubles champions [with former Scouts standout Maddie Lipp] as a freshman two seasons ago. The Zordanis’ tennis games, in a nutshell: just peachy. The sisters of rising University of Iowa senior tennis player Katie Zordani, the 5-foot-8 Elizabeth and 5-7 Christina
reached the 18-and-under doubles final of the Midwest Closed Championships in Indianapolis earlier this summer after topping the doubles field in Texas at a highly competitive Level 3 regional tourney in February. Yale-bound Elizabeth played in a proam tennis event in Northbrook on July 12; Christina started competing at the National Clay Court Championships (Girls 18 singles and doubles) in Memphis, Tenn., on July 14. Both are five-star recruits on tennisrecruiting.net. “What impresses me most about them is their attitude on the court, their competitiveness,” says Park, who played No. 3 doubles at last fall’s North Suburban Conference Meet and chipped in during that pie-baking session. “Both are also super nice and dependable, always there for you. “What I’ll miss most about Elizabeth is the positive attitude she brought to every match and the way she pumped everybody up.” Elizabeth Zordani went a combined 23-4 in four state meets, helping Scouts squads capture state titles in ’10, ’12 and ’13. After pairing up with Haleigh McPeek (LFHS, ’11) for a runner-up finish in doubles as a freshman, she took fifth place in singles in
each of the past two seasons. As a junior, in her first match in the back draw, she trailed York’s Maria Avgerinos 4-7, 15-40 in an 8-game pro set. “EZ” proved too tough and too clutch, winning five straight games to secure a 9-7 victory before ousting two more foes in critical matches for the eventual state champs. Christina Zordani followed up a state doubles championship effort with a run to the consolation semifinals in singles last fall. She won six of eight matches as a 9-16 seed, including a 7-5, 6-4 defeat of 5-8 seed Gaby Rosales of Marian Catholic in a consolation quarterfinal. Both sisters rely on an aggressive brand of tennis, with Elizabeth earning quick points via her powerful, flat forehand and Christina wearing opponents out with her two-fisted backhand. Both applaud Scouts coach Denise Murphy for emphasizing the “we” in tennis, even though there is an “i” in the sport — and, occasionally, an “I,” as in what tends to drive me-first players in team-last programs. “Everything is for the team, about the team … Denise has always believed that,” Christina says. “It’s never about individuals during the season. She’s also real positive. “Denise,” Elizabeth adds, “doesn’t just
want her players to be good players; she also wants them to be good people. Every year her players do service projects as a team. We’d also do crazy beach workouts in the preseason, but Denise likes to use those [to double] as bonding sessions for the team. Every year she makes sure every player understands the importance of the team concept.” Noting Lake Forest’s Zordani family is a “tennis family” is like noting the Ford family is a “car family,” though the father, Don Zordani, was a speed skater, and the mother, Jan, took to water sports. Katie Zordani isn’t the only collegiate tennis player in the family; John Zordani (LFHS, ’13) pounded shots as a freshman at the University of Wisconsin this past spring. Rising eighth-grader William Zordani plays competitive tennis year-round. The sixth Zordani is Michael, who enters the fifth grade this fall and has dabbled in tennis. But baseball is his favorite sport. “He has good groundstrokes, naturallooking ones,” Elizabeth says. “Probably because he’s watched all of us play tennis so many times.” Elizabeth laughs again. Christina follows suit. Sound partners — on and off the court. ■

With Kevin Reiterman & Bill McLean At the Shoot-Around Boys Basketball Lake Forest HS: Adam Wolf is 6-foot-7, 205 pounds. So he’s pretty hard to miss. But the talented basketball player indeed will be missed by the Scouts. Last week, Wolf, a stretch forward who is receiving interest from a number of Division I mid-majors, told coaches and players at Lake Forest High School that he would not be returning for his senior season. Instead, he will enroll at Beaver Dam High School in Wisconsin. “It’s pretty shocking," said Lake Forest teammate Noah Karras. “I had no idea. It had to be a hard decision.” Wolf opened last season in LF’s starting lineup. But a stress fracture (left knee) sidelined him for 14 games. He wound up averaging 6.3 points and 3.3 rebounds per game for a team, which won 22 of 29 games. “I’ve always had a good relationship with him. He’s a great kid from a great family,” said LF head coach Phil LaScala. “I wish we still had him, but I also wish him the very best.” Addition always is better than subtraction in these cases, but the Scouts remain incredibly deep for the 201415 season. “We’ll be alright,” said LaScala. The Scouts will build around seniors Evan Boudreaux (24.6 ppg, 14.4 rpg), Jack Traynor, Noah Karras, Steve Vogrich and Tommy Trkla. Lorenzo Edwards is a highly touted junior. “We definitely have some guys who can step up,” said Karras. Wolf will be a welcome addition to the Golden Beavers. In fact, he will stick out. “They didn’t so well last year (record-wise), but they were competitive,” said Wolf, who has grandparents who
live in Beaver Dam. “They don’t have any big guys. No one with my height.” The Beavers also will be impressed by Wolf’s skill level. He’s got a nice shooting touch from the perimeter, and he’s got the body to battle inside. Wolf, who plays his club basketball with Full Package, has no scholarship offers at this time, but he is receiving interest from SIU-Edwardsville, Valparaiso and Hartford. Volleys Club Volleyball D1 Chicago: The 17 Green squad, which features Loyola Academy’s Connor Kreb, Jakub Mazurek and Jack Talaga and Glenbrook North’s Derek Goldstein, Cameron Hillocks and Kevin Lee, placed 18th in Club Division at the 2014 USA Boys’ Junior Nationals in Houston (June 28-July 5). Scrums Boys Rugby Lake Forest Harriers: Jay Kim, who attends Glenbrook North, and Collin Graham, who attends Loyola Academy, have been selected to the Illinois all-star team. They will play in the UK later this month.

But the coach set another plan in motion: Chakravorti would serve the team as a setter. “I saw leadership written all over him,” recalls the club coach, Ed Wrather. “In drills he was loud and energetic, animated, a director. Setters are volleyball’s point guards and quarterbacks — all those positions require high sports IQs, plus the ability to be a second head coach in competition. “Dante didn’t know he was a leader then, but I sure did.” Chakravorti is now a 6-foot-3, 165-pound setter, a rising senior at New Trier and one of only 19 players under the age of 19 to have been selected for USA Volleyball Boys’ Youth National Training Team (BYNTT) in Tulsa, Okla., earlier this month. The third-year varsity member and Glencoe resident lofted sets for the Trevians’ 32-8 state quarterfinalist in June and later helped Wrather’s Glenview-based Vortex club place 17th at the Boys’ Junior National Volleyball Championships in Houston. It’s safe to surmise Chakravorti is a hit … as a setter. “I do like to hit; I’m pretty offensive as a setter when I play high school volleyball,” says Chakravorti, who ranked fifth among Trevians in kills (68) before NT’s 25-16, 26-24 state quarterfinal loss to Lake Park High School on June 7. “I like to find different ways to win from the setter position. I also like to think I have three rhythms as a setter. “It’s up to me to get the team into the right rhythm during matches — without the other team identifying that rhythm.” The sharp, fun-loving Chakravorti

FC United Select U-16 teammates feel a true connection as they head to national tourney ■ by bill mclean
sports@northshoreweekend.com On a day ideally suited for sunglasses and beachwear, Dani Kaufman needed a winter coat. Or a space heater. “I’m getting chills again, right now,” the FC United Select goalkeeper said on July 10, after recounting the final moments of the U16 US Youth Soccer Region II Championship in Dayton, Ohio, on June 25. Kaufman — a rising junior and the keeper for New Trier’s reigning Class 3A state champions — helped her FC United Select club win five matches in five days, including its 4-2 double-overtime defeat of Ambassadors FC (Ohio) in the final. Junior-to-be Olivia Peters of Glenbrook South scored both goals in the extra sessions. “As soon as I heard that final whistle, I sprinted toward [Loyola Academy defender] Lauren Chrisman, hugged her and picked her up,” Kaufman said. “We all dog-piled after that.” Coach Craig Snower’s talent-drenched crew had plenty of reasons to unleash pure joy on a pitch, none bigger than that the victory marked the first region title in club history. Snower coaches Loyola Academy’s girls in the spring. Chrisman and five other Ramblers made the FC United Select team that will vie for a national championship July 22-27 in Germantown, Md. “Our chemistry, on and off the field, is so good,” said FC United Select/Loyola Academy forward Devin Burns, who scored the first two goals of the title match and ended up with a team-high five goals in region play. “We’re able to connect so well. “We always come to play, ready to bring it and leave it all on the field.” Kaufman and the defense in front of her allowed only one goal in group play. FC United Select routed St. Louis Scott Gallagher 7-0 and Alliance Speed (Iowa) 4-0, before edging Fusion (Wisconsin) 2-1. Midfielders Sheridan Bufe and Paige Bourne — teammates on Lake Forest High School’s reigning Class 2A state champs — tallied the goals in FC United Select’s 2-0 defeat of KHA Red (Ohio) in a semifinal on June 24. “Teams can’t take us lightly,” Peters said. “Everybody on our team, including our bench players, has something special to contribute. Underestimating us, that’s risky for any team.” Peters pointed out that FC United Select had only 10 days to train for region play because Illinois’ high school state playoffs ended on June 7. “The other teams [at the Region II tournament] were coming off club seasons,” Peters said. “Players on those teams had been training together for months.

“I respect his game a lot,” Kaufman said. “Some of the saves he made in the quarterfinal (1-0 win over France) … great ones.” Kaufman was surrounded by splendid teammates in Dayton for nearly a week. Seven of them also represented NT at the state finals in Naperville last month. “I consider myself very lucky to be able to play for such a strong club team,” Kaufman said. “It’s a privilege, really. At the start [of region play] we all realized we had a shot, a good shot, at [qualifying for nationals]. “We used that realization as fuel, as motivation.” Other New Trier players on FC United Select’s U16 team: defenders Jennifer Fishman and Hannah von Kreuter; midfielders Celia Frei, Molly Purcell and Bina Saipi; goalkeeper Michelle Sokal; and forward Kelly Maday; other LFHS players: defenders Allison Banta and Adrian Walker; additional LA Ramblers: midfielders Natalie Joyce and Shannon Powers; defender Alexandra Yasko; and forward Mary Kate Phelan. ■

Tried & true
Competing in triathlons is a passion for Highland Park’s Nathan ■ by bob gosman
sports@northshoreweekend.com Reeven Nathan, a 2010 graduate of Highland Park High School, laughs when asked to describe the catalyst for his decision to go out for the swimming team as a freshman. “My brother was 7-years-old at the time and he could swim faster than I could,” Nathan said. “That motivated me.” Motivated and driven are good words to describe Nathan, who attacks life with relentless determination and energy. He became a star swimmer for Highland Park and logged two seasons swimming for Division III Amherst College. He also spent a year as a volunteer and soldier draftee in the Israeli Defense Forces. And in his spare time he runs triathlons — naturally. Since his spare time is limited, he is “only” training between 90 minutes and two hours per day. Still, he represented Team USA in the 2014 World Championships. Most recently, he competed in Chicago on June 29 at the ITU World Championships. “I don’t want to pursue triathlon as a career. I do it as a passion,” he said. “I love biking, I enjoy swimming, and running is self-motivation; you need to drive yourself.” Highland Park swimming coach Tim Sirois said that Nathan was one of the most
determined athletes he has ever coached. “He came in with no competitive swim experience, just a tremendous amount of determination and an outstanding work ethic,” Sirois said. “Anytime I would open the pool for lap swimming he would come in. He never let anything intimidate him, and he always wanted the hardest workout.” Nathan transformed himself from a novice swimmer to a conference champion his senior year in the 200-yard freestyle. He also excelled at the 500 free. “He just kept making huge time drops,” Sirois said. In addition to swimming, Nathan also participated in cross country, lacrosse and hockey at Highland Park. He selected Amherst for its academic reputation and welcoming campus. “It’s smaller than Highland Park High School,” he said. “It’s a great liberal arts college where you get to know your professors and lots of people on campus.” Nathan, who is majoring in physics and Middle Eastern Studies, found the same attitude during his year with the Israeli Defense Forces. “It is amazing how close-knit the whole country is,” he said. “It’s not six degrees of separation; it’s two degrees. I would meet people on the base and they would invite me to stay at their house with their family for the weekend. I had never experienced that before. It was awesome.”

While the physical work was demanding, it was no problem for Nathan, thanks to his background in triathlon. He said the year in Israel was an unforgettable experience. He chronicled much of it in his blog: reevennathan.wordpress.com. “It helped me mature a lot,” said Nathan, who will return to Israel for a semester for an Arabic-language immersion course. Nathan developed his love of cycling when

he began riding with a men’s group on long rides throughout the suburbs. He remembers initially wearing shorts on a cold day and being left behind by the more experienced riders. Now, he sets the pace, which is no surprise to Sirois. “Distance athletes don’t typically hit their peak in college,” Sirois said. “Knowing Reeven, he’ll continue to work and excel even more down the road.” ■

‘Baseball is my calling’
Lake Forest’s Johnson heading to Bucknell after leaving his mark on area teams ■ by kevin reiterman
sports@northshoreweekend.com It has become his personal rite of spring — and summer. In the first inning of every game, Luke Johnson sprints out to his position — either second base or shortstop — and pays his respects. With his right index finger, he writes the initials GW on the infield dirt. “Grandpa Wyatt,” says the Lake Forest High School middle infielder. It’s a tribute to his mother’s dad who passed away a couple of years ago. And it serves as a reminder. “He used to tell me to keep following my dream,” Johnson says. Respecting others, respecting the game is part of Johnson’s predisposition. He has a penchant for playing this sport — and treating people — the right way. Which goes a long way in explaining why Johnson hauled home a keepsake to die for in early March: a life-sized glassed picture frame with his U17 Nationals No. 6 jersey hanging inside. At a baseball banquet at the Burr Ridge Marriott, Johnson was named Top Tier’s 2013 Organizational Player of the Year. “Truly, an honor,” Johnson says. Truly deserving says Todd Fine, head coach, co-founder and CEO of Top Tier Baseball. “It’s a character achievement award,” says Fine, a former scout for the Houston Astros. “It goes to the player who stands for the right values. And with Luke, that’s especially the case. “He’s as good a human being as you’ll ever find, which is a testament to his parents (Paul and Hallie),” Fine adds. “He’s a team-first guy. He’s about sacrificing for the betterment of teammates.” You get no argument from LFHS head baseball coach Ray Del Fava. “Luke Johnson the baseball player? Yeah, he’s awesome,” raves Del Fava. “But Luke Johnson the person? He’s even greater.” But you also should know this. The kid can play. The summer of 2013 was a pivotal one for the 6-foot, 175-pound Johnson, who recently completed his senior year at LFHS. He was awfully good “between the lines.” He hit like a mad man and fielded his position with precision. “Last summer, I played by best baseball ever,” says Johnson, who ended up hitting .450 against elite tournament pitching. “Even when I was making outs, I was squaring the ball up.” “He had an awesome season,” Fine adds. But there is another side to Luke Johnson. He’s a kid with unmistakable inner drive. He doesn’t like to settle. A former resident of Boston, who grew up a Red Sox fan and admirer of former MVP second baseman Dustin Pedroia, Johnson admits that he might have gone too far with his preparation for the 2014 spring high school season. His tireless workouts and conditioning sessions in the offseason caught up to him. He overdid it. A back injury — stress reaction — forced him to miss 20 games. “I wanted to get the upper hand against the competition,” Johnson says. “I can’t really pinpoint when the injury occurred,” he adds. “I woke up one day, and my back hurt. It didn’t feel right. Something was off. Ice and Motrin didn’t do anything. “I had to give my body some time off. But now, I look at the injury as just a bump in

the road.” Can you say “Comeback Player of the Year?” Johnson eventually returned to the LF lineup and was able to salvage at least part of the season. On May 2, in a 13-3 win over Round Lake, he went 2-for-2 with a double and three RBIs. “He willed himself to fight through the pain. And there was a lot of pain,” Del Fava says. “He was never 100 percent this spring. But he felt that his team needed him — and we did.” Johnson ended up beating the odds. He hit .383 with 17 runs, 10 RBIs and nine extra base hits and came away with a pretty neat plaudit: honorable mention all-conference. “Just imagine if he had been healthy all year,” says Del Fava, who guided the Scouts to a 24-13 record. “Our success in the second half of the season (including an eight-game win streak) coincided with his coming back to the lineup.” To his credit, Johnson, a first-team
all-NSC selection as a junior, made the most of his 20-game sabbatical. Instead of use his batting eye to face live pitching, he gave hitting tips to fellow teammates who would seek him out. “I was another hitting coach for the team,” says Johnson. “Guys would ask me to look at their swings, watch them hit. Guys trusted me. And I was very honest with them.” “We called him Coach LJ,” says Del Fava. “He’s always helping guys with their swings.” He also talks baseball with ease. “Luke and I had a lot of great conversations,” the coach adds. “He understands players. He understands their moods, and what it takes to get the best out of them.” Mentorship is important to Johnson. He says he owes a debt to ex-Stevenson High School and Top Tier shortstop Adam Walton, who was named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American for the University of Illinois this spring. “He’s my baseball big brother,” says
Johnson, noting that his real brother, Perry, is a former top-notch golfer for LFHS. “He showed me the ropes. He’s shown me what it takes to take my game to the next level.” In turn, Johnson is “showing the ropes” to Lake Forest’s Cal Coughlin, who just completed his sophomore season at Carmel Catholic. “Like me, when it comes to baseball, he’s all about getting after it,” says Johnson. That mentality has served Johnson well. And he’ll take that mindset into the next chapter of his life. This fall, there will be a letter “B” on his cap, when he suits up for Bucknell University. He’s got big plans. “I don’t take anything for granted,” Johnson says. “I’m thankful and feel blessed to play the game I love. I used to play some basketball and football. But baseball is my calling.” It’s all about that dream — and Grandpa Wiley’s lasting words. “I plan to do everything I can to play professional baseball some day,” he adds. “That’s what I’m pursuing. I’m going to give it my best shot.” ■

The art of getting clients their money’s worth ■ by s.h. sweet Fine art, jewelry, antiques, classic cars and other staples of North Shore homes can be hard to value. Yet figuring out their fair price is an essential part of managing wealth, so that insurers, investment managers, and estate planning professionals can assess the true net worth of individuals and families. Enter Laura de Frise. After 31 years at Christie’s working with private clients and museum curators, she joined Ronald Varney Fine Art Advisors as its Chicago representative. A native of Lake Forest, she helps value, sell, and collect tangible assets. Initially, the New York-based firm has targeted bankers, lawyers, private wealth managers, and notfor-profits to introduce itself in the Midwest. De Frise represents the client’s interests and on their behalf might solicit proposals from auction houses like Christie’s or Sotheby’s, regional auction houses, or niche market auction firms when selling a collection or an individual piece.
“I can discuss the best ways to market the item — should it be on the cover of a catalogue or have a threepage spread inside?” | Laura de Frise “We are experts at knowing where the best place to potentially sell a work is,” says de Frise, sipping a cup of coffee and eating a double chocolate cookie at Leonidas, a chocolate café in Evanston. “I can discuss the best ways to market the item — should it be on the cover of a catalogue or have a three-page spread inside?” The process of selling at auction involves a lot of paperwork – before, during, and after a sale. And because de Frise — a graduate of Sarah Lawrence University — wants each piece to be placed in the best possible situation for an optimal return, this could involve many different types of sales. “Especially if the client has multiple items that might go to multiple places for sale, we have the paperwork come through our office to stay on top of all transactions for the client,” she notes. “The auction process is a long one, often six months or more from thinking about selling to actual sale, so realizing results from the sale might take time. Sometimes auction houses don’t pay as quickly as the clients like so we can push those buttons to collect.” The firm receives a percentage of all sales. Sometimes clients come with expectations that are tough to meet, de Frise says. “Showing them results of past sales of similar items might take the emotion out of the sale and allow clients to be more realistic about the value of their treasure. Sometimes, we are the bearer of good news — but sometimes, it can be disappointing news.” And whether or not one is thinking of selling, he or she probably should have an

appraisal done. De Frise can call in specialists to value items for an insurance appraisal or auction estimate or charitable gift. “So many times people don’t consider their art and collectible assets in the same way as other assets — they know what their house and stock portfolio are worth, but they may not think about what they are living with which could be just as important in terms of value,” de Frise says. “If you live with something every day, it is comfortable, so you are less likely to know what you really have — especially if it is something that has come down through the family. Someone could be sitting on a signed piece of jewelry from a designer and not know that it is in high demand.” De Frise and her company know when the time is right to sell because they are constantly in touch with auction houses, dealers, and specialists to know what is popular so that clients can take advantage of the best timing. Beyond selling pieces, de Frise —who is president of the Old Masters Society and a member of the Antiquarian Society at the Art Institute of Chicago — can be involved in collecting fine art or other tangible assets. “Although we work more with sellers than buyers, we have strong connections with people in the field, so we can direct our clients to a person or firm to help them build or curate their collections. And we can do more than provide a name, we can literally introduce the client to the right specialist.” However, de Frise also notes that there are a lot of ways individuals can begin to learn to be more discerning about things they already love that would not require her services — she mentions books, museums, galleries, exhibitions, and antique shows as a starting place. “Introduce yourself to local dealers to start somewhere that’s easily accessible,” she says. “Go to the next EXPO Chicago September 18-21 at Navy Pier for contemporary and modern art. There will be dealers from all over the world on your own turf.” A gardener and skier, de Frise also walks her 95-pound Akita in her spare time. She enjoys travel and recently returned from a trip to Bora Bora. During the school year, she and her husband, Steven Rugo, often choose to fly to Los Angeles to visit their children, who are students at the University of Southern California. But she is always happy to return to her job. “I continue to work with clients I enjoy meeting and who own beautiful things,” de Frise says. “There’s no better combination than that.” ■
