andering the streets of the North Shore, one rarely runs into anyone lacking an arm or a leg. The area is blessed: the vast majority can operate limbs we were born with to hold a fork, open doors and much more. At the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, the opposite is true. Wander the corridors of its Superior Street facility, and the physical losses are staggering. I first became aware of the non-profit thanks to the John Dolan Golf Challenge, run by Lake Forest’s Danny Dolan and his wife, Mary. Fivesomes included at least one golfer wearing a prosthetic leg after a car crash or another who swung a club with one arm, to offer but two examples. What amazed me each year was how well those who had rehabbed at the RIC played golf. Some could strike the ball with the grace of Northfield’s Luke Donald. And they never complained about their loss. Despite the fact the RIC has been named the best rehabilitation hospital in the country for more than 20 years in a row, its best days look to be

ahead. CEO Joanne Smith and others have helped raise about $200 million toward a new Streeterville facility (two blocks from its present location) to be opened in 2017. Viva the Vistas! North Shore homes with spectacular views ‘wow’ buyers

307 North Deere Park Drive, Highland Park

2195 Kipling Lane, Highland Park (West Deerfield Township)

■ by bill mclean The easiest day in the professional life of Koenig & Strey broker Eleanor Dowling had to be when she showed a Lake Bluff lakefront house to a gentleman last year. The buyer took a look at Lake Michigan for a little while, turned to Dowling and said, “I’ll buy the house.” Dowling replied, “But you haven’t even walked through the house yet.” Lake Michigan’s beauty and magnetism had done all the talking for Dowling and allowed the new homeowner to tend to other matters that day. “It took him a good minute to decide he wanted it,” Dowling said. It’s hard to put a price tag on a spectacular view from a North Shore house, especially a vista that has anything to do with an ocean-like, multi-hued great lake. “Some days Lake Michigan looks like the Caribbean Sea and on others it looks gray and surly,” says Blanche Romey, a broker at Coldwell Banker in Winnetka. “When you walk into a house and there’s a view of that lake, no matter what season it is, the aura knocks your socks off.” Other great views from second-, third-floor windows or master-bedroom balconies along these parts feature

ravines, golf courses, sprawling backyards, open lands, ponds, gardens and groves of trees. “Any views that are expansive and unobstructed, that go on forever — those are examples of ‘visual comfort,’ ” says Roberta Miller, a broker and marketing specialist at Baird & Warner in Lake Forest. “If you’re selling and your house has gorgeous views, it’s smart to show it most often at the time of day that it’s most lovely, like at sunset.

“When you walk into a house and there’s a view of that lake, no matter what season it is, the aura knocks your socks off.” | Coldwell Banker broker Blanche Romey “Something as simple as rearranging furniture helps, too,” she adds. “Doing that could create an easy path for a buyer to stroll to a window and take in a great view.” Not all views are of the stunning variety, but that

shouldn’t mean a homeowner has to invest in striking paintings to make up for the lack of nature’s eye candy. “You can do things fairly cheaply to enhance views,” says Michele Vold, a broker at Coldwell Banker in Deerfield. “If a house doesn’t have a spectacular view, make sure the landscape — it’s a house’s makeup, I like to say — around it is pretty, the house is painted and the driveway is sealed.” Lake Michigan’s waves are impossible to see and hear from 2195 Kipling Lane in West Deerfield Township. The property’s backyard, however, deserves to be near the forefront of any look at views. “It has a phenomenal view, an unbelievable view,” Vold says of the sight from the master-bed balcony of the 16-bedroom home with seven full baths and three half baths. “The backyard has a pool, a rock slide, a patio, a hot tub, a grill station and a pergola. “It’s looks,” she adds, “like a part of a Four Seasons Hotel.” The look of a buyer seeing a magnificent view for the first time thrills brokers. It also means the broker doesn’t have to say a word. “You let the view speak for itself,” says Jean Anderson, Vice President of Sales at Prudential Rubloff Properties in Lake Forest. views >> page 10

Broker Joanna Koperski of @properties-Lake Forest has been aware of guarded buyers who attempt to make it through an entire showing without reacting. A highly attractive view usually spoils such a quest and consequently bankrupts poker faces. “A great view can take a buyer’s breath away,” Koperski says, adding no matter how much upgrading or remodeling may be required, a great view can dwarf those necessities and convince a buyer to commit to a property. “They’re awed, they pause to admire, they smile — all a pleasure to watch.” Broker Debbie Scully of @properties in Highland Park gets a kick out of the reactions she witnesses while showing the house on 307 Deere Park in Highland Park. “Right after people walk in, they take a right into the living room and it’s immediately a ‘Wow’ moment when they see the lake through two huge windows,” Scully says. “It’s dramatic and awesome.” Pick a season, any season, with Lake Michigan as its backdrop. Now look at the body of water from inside a North Shore home. You can’t lose. “What’s nice about views in this part of the world is that each season has its own beauty,” says broker and consultant Susan Maman of @properties in Winnetka. “An exquisite view of the lake is the ultimate because it’s peaceful and has a calming effect.” The Pabst Manor in Glencoe has an abundance of gorgeous views, form its majestic driveway to the country club-esque setting behind it. “You look out and you feel like you’re at a resort,” Maman adds. Jean Wright has lived in Winnetka for 54 years and not once has a view of Lake Michigan made her shrug. “I look at it every day,” says Wright of Jean Wright Real Estate in Winnetka. “It’s green some days, it’s blue on others and today [Feb. 6] it’s white with ice caps. It’s still beautiful and interesting to me. “When we show people homes with beautiful views, they’re envisioning their furniture in the room, and when they’re looking outside, they’re envisioning their kids playing and how they would look entertaining friends. Views are important.” ■

Sommelier uncorks wine book for novices ■ by joanna brown

Northfield resident Melanie Wagner may be a certified sommelier — a recognized wine expert — but she considers herself a great defender of novices. “Everybody who loves wine loves food, but people don’t apologize for how little they know about food the way they do about wine,” said Wagner, author of the recently published paperback by Chronicle Books, “Hello, Wine: The Most Essential Things You Need to Know About Wine.” “Drink whatever you like. Don’t let people tell you what tastes better,” she adds. “There’s a real subjectivity to wine, and you can’t separate that any more than you can with what you like to eat or who you marry.” She knows because it wasn’t that long ago that she was a novice. The Florida native said there was rarely a wine glass at her family’s dinner table, and it was a college trip to Italy that solidified her growing interest. “The people we met treated wine as a really important part of the dinner table and the process of eating their meals,” she explained. “We were drinking very basic, local wines, but it was very natural for people to linger at the table, staying to talk after the meal was over.” She moved to San Francisco after college, and eventually landed a sales internship with a wine distributer known for having the most knowledgeable staff around. “I was definitely determined to know about wine,” Wagner said. “From the beginning, I said that I could be the smartest person in the room about wine.” She carried reference books in her car and grew her sales through the classes she offered to the bartenders and waiters that poured her products. Customers encouraged her to offer similar classes for the general public — and her classes inspired a 20-chapter book.

“I never got a publisher for that one, but I did find a book agent and then a publisher who said they loved my voice and wanted me to try writing a basic, gateway book about wine for novices. It was to be young, fresh and fun, but also very serious in the information it contains.” Wagner immediately made a list of 60 questions she heard most frequently from her students. She aimed to answer them all in “Hello, Wine.” Far from a Q&A format, the book offers information in short sections filled with colorful illustrations and quotations from well-known wine lovers like Thomas Jefferson, Galileo and Robert Mondavi. Her audience, Wagner explained, is the same crowd that attended her wine classes: young working professionals who are just starting to enjoy business and social situations with wine and food; young married people who are learning to host dinner parties; and older people who are stuck reaching for the same bottle of wine they have for many years. “It’s a book to have on your kitchen counter for reference, like when you want a good food and wine pairing or need to see how to open a bottle without a corkscrew or wonder how long an open bottle can safely remain on the counter,” said Wagner, now the mother of two children. In fact, she offers three alternatives for a missing corkscrew: one uses a tree trunk, one a screw and pliers, and the third a wire coat hanger. Beyond answering these questions, Wagner hopes the book inspires novices to keep learning — as she did. “There is also a real intellectual, spiritual side to wine. I’ve opened bottles and felt very connected to people and places, and even other eras if it’s an older bottle.” Wagner has plans to offer several wine classes this year. Lessons learned after leaving the North Shore to retire in Mexico

A Glenview homeowner endured construction headaches in her front hall and elsewhere to build her dream home in Merida, Mexico.

■ by s.h. sweet “You’re going where to do whaaaat?” my mother demanded when more than 10 years ago I started an adventure – selling my house in Glenview to retire in Mexico (even though I was much too young to retire). I began looking in the tourist areas I knew best, along the Caribbean coast from Cancun to Tulum, but realized I did not want to live somewhere filled with tourists. So I ventured further and explored other popular destinations for Americans throughout Mexico, not wanting to be the only gringa in town. Finally, I settled on Merida. Why? Merida is a city of almost a million people, and it has a Costco. First requirement — check. A colonial capital of the Yucatan peninsula filled with Spanish

history from the 1500s and Mayan history for millenia, Merida has a symphony orchestra, a vibrant art scene, and lots of houses in ruins waiting for the perfect owner. Merida also has charming squares where bands play, couples get dressed up to dance together, and women wear big flowers in their shining hair. There was actually an area called Gringo Gulch downtown. I was enchanted and began looking for my dream home in el centro with high ceilings and big spaces for entertaining my soon-tobe-made international friends. I searched and found a few places meeting my requirements — but always something happened. The owner wanted me to pay his back taxes. There were two owners who could not agree on a price. The three owners in Merida could not find the fourth. Finally, I found a grumpy old man whose property was as large as I wanted who seemed willing to sell, so off I went to discuss the deal with my notary. Things took awhile since the dimensions of the property in reality were not those shown in the official records — happens a lot with older homes, I was told. In the meantime, a for-sale sign on the property next door appeared so I negotiated to buy it as well — even though it was a total mess — because it came with a ready-made garage (very desirable in a downtown area) and had land for a large swimming pool. I purchased both properties (paying cash and setting up a fideicommiso with a bank who acts as trustee for non-Mexicans) and proceeded to combine the two into my dream house. A year and many bribes and construction

headaches later, I moved in to my expansive and expensive home complete with the 18-foot ceilings, a 60-foot lap pool, and the promise of a garden — seven layers of old flooring were excavated before bringing in tons of difficult-to-find dirt. Construction was at times a harrowing experience since there was no such thing as safety equipment in Mexico and most of the workers wore sandals to work. The concrete for the new walls was mixed by hand in the garage and moved in a wheelbarrow. I purchased a tile-cutting saw which sped up the installation of the floor and construction of built-in furniture and which was a miracle to the workers who determined if something were level by dropping a string with a stone tied to the end to find plumb and made a saw from a blade and a rounded stick. I began to see how the Mayans built those amazing pyramids because many of the same construction practices were alive and well in my back yard. Finally came the time to move in furniture which I had shipped from Chicago. A container packed in Glenview was trucked to Florida and shipped across the Gulf of Mexico to Progreso. Each piece of furniture and every box was removed from the container, opened and inspected, noted on a list and crossed off the list I had provided, and then put back into the container. They confiscated some “contraband” – several bottles of my favorite moisturizer, which I thought I could not live without. Finally, the shipment was released but because of local traffic laws, it could not be unloaded

“Your home is where my heart is.”

until after 10 p.m. Friends and I waited to welcome the furniture and the movers. They began unloading when there was a power outage. After some panic and despair, we resorted to using candles in the container and in the house so we could tell what was what and should go where. And now, nine years later, I am still too young to retire, but am selling the home that has been filled with entertaining and relaxing and fixing problems. I learned many valuable lessons during this adventure: • If there is a lot of rain, you will have to paint your house more often. • Walk on the shady side of the street. Always. • Shade, air flow, and as few clothes as possible are your best friends when you live in the tropics. • Try that fruit you have never seen before in your life — you may love it. • Don’t be the first person on your street to try solar power. • If someone responds “yo puedo” to the question “can you...?”, don’t believe they can, but believe they will sure try to do whatever you have asked. • Plant only one or two of that amazing plant because if you plant more, it will take over your life. But the most crucial lesson by far is that there is nothing so important that it cannot be put off until tomorrow. You must embrace this attitude to survive in Mexico, but it applies universally — well, that lesson and also you can go home again and your mother will welcome you back. ■

Peter Roskam, R-Wheaton; Ted Deutch, D-Fla.; and Doug Collins, R-Ga., in getting 134 members of Congress to support a letter to ASA president Curtis Marez opposing ASA’s boycott as bigoted and an affront to academic freedom. “The ASA boycott is misdirected, wrong and another unacceptable attempt in the broader effort to de-legitimize Israel,” Schneider said. “I will continue to stand strong against this and all other attempts that aim to de-legitimize Israel.” Glenview The Glenview Prairie Club Golf and paddle facility has been named the Illinois Park and Recreation Association’s (IPRA) 2013 Outstanding Facility of the Year. Given for outstanding achievement in the design and development of new or renovated park and recreation facilities, the award was presented to the Glenview Park District. Four Park District

staff members – Dave Woolf, Blake Manhart, Ken Wexler and Cheryl Deom – led the project team, with Valenti Builders being the construction manager and Nicholas Design Group handling the architectural duties. Said Chuck Balling, executive director at the Glenview Park District, “It was extremely rewarding to work cooperatively with our residents, loyal golfers, paddle tennis enthusiasts and our dedicated board (of commissioners) to create this one-of-a-kind year-round facility that enhances our golfers’ experience and adds paddle tennis as a new outdoor sport for our community.” In its first season, paddle tennis memberships have been almost doubled district projections. The club also had a 7 percent increase in golf rounds during 2013.

Let’s Talk Real Estate by Jean Wright, President/Broker Owner Crs, GrI

The seller’s DIsClOsure With every listing comes a form called “The Seller’s Disclosure.” This is a form that every seller must fill out and should be included with documentation. It’s a form that tells potential buyers exactly what they’re in for with the house they’re buying. While the disclosure is a great tool, it shouldn’t be your only tool. Ask the seller if they’re willing to have a home inspection done and if any defects are disclosed, that they’ll be willing to make necessary repairs. The good news is a seller’s disclosure will let you know about any defects or potential defects in a house. The bad news is that if, after closing, something happens that wasn’t listed on the form, and the seller says they were unaware of it, there’s nothing that can be done. This is why a home inspection is a great thing to invest in—as well as asking the seller to include a home warranty. If “Contingent upon satisfactory home inspection,” it’s written into the contract offered, the buyer is provided with options. With a home warranty secured and in place at the time of closing, both the buyer and the seller are protected, with just a little extra forethought and planning going into the terms of closing.

When Joanne Smith attended medical school at Michigan State University, she joined a pediatric orthopedic rotation. One day she opened the door in a waiting room to a free amputee clinic for children in Grand Rapids. “There had to be 50-60 severely disabled children literally without half their bodies,” says Smith. “But these kids were giggling and laughing. That everyone was so happy and so normal, I was in shock.” Smith fell in love with the rehabilitation field. Today, she is president and chief executive officer of the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago — ranked the No. 1 hospital of its type in the country by U.S. News & World Report every year since 1991. Far from resting on its laurels, Smith is steering the non-profit into a new era. With its 182-bed facility on Superior Street struggling to meet demand, she has launched the drive to build a bigger facility. Scheduled to open in 2017, the sleek $550-million building at 355 E. Erie will feature a new name: The Ability Institute of RIC. “It’s literally the Joanne Smith only project of its kind anywhere on the planet,” says Smith, a Hinsdale resident in her early 50s. “No other organization is investing these types of resources in the field.

CEO charts new course for venerable RIC

We’re almost creating a whole new category of medicine.” Already, Smith and her staff — including Tom Sullivan, recruited from Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital — have raised about $200 million. The number of beds will increase by a third, while outpatient care service will jump fourfold. And the name — emphasizing ability rather than rehabilitation — represents a new vision for the 60-year-old organization, which treats tens of thousands of patients each year who suffer from brain injuries, strokes and more. “Ability is our code word for recovery, cure. The entire organization adopted that word with great passion and vigor,” Smith says. “That promise of ability didn’t come from the guys in our office — it came from the eyes of our patients. It’s not only money — it’s the right people, the right legislative support.” illustration by barry blitt Smith has hired a branding team from San Francisco who plans to reposition RIC in this category of medicine on the world stage.

Time for a renovation? No, not the house.

Never before has the hospital needed to advertise or to pitch articles, but its new look calls for different measures. The seventh of nine children, Smith was born in Detroit. She earned a bachelor of science degree from Oakland University in Rochester, Mich. before heading to Michigan State. After completing her residency at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, she became a practicing physician at RIC in the early 1990s. Smith came aboard as temporary CEO when RIC experienced financial troubles in 2006. After a national search, it was suggested Smith — who earned a masters degree in business administration from the University of Chicago in 2000 — stay permanently. “Financial is not what I thought I’d be doing, but in

By the next year, after new senior management was recruited and expenses were cut, it showed a small operating gain. After taking the reins as CEO, Smith tried to continue serving as a doctor but found it too challenging. Still, she’s as busy as can be working during the day, raising funds for the new facility at night and driving around her two children, horse-loving Claire and hockey-loving Michael. She calls husband Rory Repicky “the secret of my success” along with “a great nanny” and the ability to be organized (“If you get organized, you can juggle a lot”). And no matter how busy she is on administrative tasks at work, she always finds time to visit patients. “Even if they can’t speak, they are communicating what they want. So many times it’s in their look, their effort, their soul,” Smith says. “The long-term relationships you have with patients in our field is great. In another field, sometimes you’re there during an illness — and then you don’t see them anymore.” ■

Church, Scarry have been sturdy off the boards for Warriors ■ by bill mclean

sports@northshoreweekend.com It makes Deerfield High School diving coach Doug Foerch smile every time during the warm-up session of an invitational. His divers — senior Ryan Church and junior Sean Scarry — throw difficult dive after difficult dive in front of awestruck student workers who had never seen such eye-catching plunges in prep meets. “It’s funny, seeing how wowed the student spectators get,” Foerch says. “I try to have fun at times. One of my guys will hit a great dive before the meet and I’ll yell at him, like I’m mad at what he didn’t do correctly. But I’m really not mad. “The kids on deck look at me in disbelief. It’s like they think I’m a Navy SEAL or something.” Church and Scarry have put up serious numbers this winter. Church set the school mark for six dives with a 287.45-point total at the Hersey Invite on Jan. 25. Scarry, fourth at state last winter, owns Deerfield’s record for 11 dives (489.5, set last year) and has battled Church for the top spot at most meets. “They’re on fire,” Warriors swim coach John Sullivan says of the Glenbrook Aquatics club teammates. “They’re talented, working hard, showing great leadership.” The 6-foot-1, 155-pound Church was a tennis player and a soccer player before shelving his racket and shin guards to focus solely on diving beginning with his junior season. “I just knew,” Church says of the decision. The 6-1, 180-pound Scarry competed as a gymnast for several years before his mother, Laura, suggested a foray into diving. “I wanted to swim, because diving was too much like gymnastics,” recalls Scarry. “But I eventually ended up diving and liking it.” Church is a finesse diver; Scarry relies on power. “Sean is more of the seasoned vet, the diver with more difficult dives,” Foerch says. “He’s like an arrow going into the water. Ryan is a product of sheer hard work, a kid who put in the hours in the offseason and came into this season looking and diving fantastic.” Never before has Foerch coached a male

photography by joel lerner tandem as talented as the Scarry-Church one. He guided a highly gifted DHS female pair in Christina Loukas and Samantha Papadakis in this century’s early years. A two-time Olympian, Loukas won three state diving titles (2001-03), and Papadakis finished runner-up at state twice (2002-03). Church missed a finals berth at state by 16 spots last year. Scarry, meanwhile, had the best day of his diving life on the first day of state (prelims, semifinals) before bowing for his fourth-place medal the next day. “His consistency was great,” Foerch says.

“Every dive — boom! — was on. Sean was on, so on.” Look for both to finish among the top 12 divers at state later this month. They push each other in practice and in meets. They root for each other as well. “We point things out to each other, sometimes small things — things that even [Foerch] doesn’t see,” Scarry says. “That progresses us.” Church appreciates it when Foerch encourages him to keep fighting after dives at practices.

“After a while, whatever it is he wants me to do better, it becomes natural,” says Church, also an avid and talented skier. Both divers have shared the spotlight this winter. Each is happy for the other when the other earns the better medal at meets. “It’s been great, seeing them go neck and neck at practices and at meets,” Foerch says. “It has been a privilege to coach both of them.” Deerfield competes at Saturday’s CSL North meet at Niles North, beginning with diving at 9 a.m.Student deckhands beware: You’re in for a pre-meet treat. ■

Lieb developing into strong inside threat ■ by t.j. brown

sports@northshoreweekend.com Jack Lieb is turning into a difference maker. “At the beginning of the year, he wasn’t starting because he was getting back from his injury and still learning the basics of the varsity team’s sets,” said Michael Alfieri, following Deerfield High School’s impressive 61-38 rout over host Maine West on Feb. 7. “But he’s gotten a lot better. His finishing has improved immensely,” Alfieri added. “He’s a huge presence inside.” The 6-foot-6 Lieb was sidelined most of last season with a back injury. He also missed the summer AAU season. But the big guy is healthy now.

“He brings a presence around the basket,” Deerfield coach Dan McKendrick said. “He can block a shot without even jumping, which is nice. “And he gets us traffic rebounds,” the coach added. “He can get to balls before anyone else can. And then offensively, he’s getting his sea legs back.” In the win over Maine West, Lieb wound up with six points, six rebounds and two blocks. Thanks to the 6-4 Alfieri (9 points, 7 rebounds, 1 block), the 6-5 Stefanos Fasianos (17 points, 9 rebounds) and Lieb, Deerfield had no trouble ruling the paint. Deerfield ended up out-rebounding Maine West 37-18. The Warriors continue to have terrific guard play. Senior shooting guard Eric Porter tallied 17 points to share teamhigh honors with Fasianos. He also had three steals, three

rebounds and two assists. Sophomore point guard Jordan Baum did not attempt a field goal, but he picked up five rebounds and seven assists. Notable: News travels fast these days. Thus, beating Maine West wasn’t the only cause for celebration. Soon after the win, the Deerfield players were informed of Maine East’s surprise 48-45 win over Highland Park. The Warriors (15-6, 7-1) are now in the CSL North driver’s seat. With two league games remaining — Glenbrook North on Feb. 14 and Maine East on Feb. 22 — they lead HP (16-5, 6-2) by one game. Meanwhile, Deerfield lost a non-conference game to Conant 66-46 on Feb. 8. Porter (14 points), Lieb (11 points) and Alfieri (8 points) led the way. ■

Accent on speed

Glenbrook South’s Salomon excelling in freestyle sprints ■ by bill mclean

sports@northshoreweekend.com

Medal stand-out: Jon Salomon, seen here accepting a first-place medal at the Evanston Invite in January, is clocking impressive times for the Glenbrook South swim team.

photography by joel lerner

Listen to Glenbrook South junior water dart Jon Salomon speak for a couple of minutes and you will hear a hint of a Boston accent. “He does something with his ‘r’s, the way he pronounces them,” Titans senior swimmer Seamus Heneghan says. “We like to give him a hard time, but he’s a good sport when we do that.” The curious thing about Salomon’s accent is its origin. Before moving to the GBS school district prior to his freshman year, he and his family lived in Park Ridge, far, far way from Fenway “Pahk.” “I have no idea where I got [the accent],” Salomon says. The language of his sport is primarily time, and the 21.05 he clocked in the 50-yard freestyle in a dual with New Trier last month was certainly distinctive. And loud. Nobody in Illinois this winter has clocked a faster time in the event. “Jon always goes as hard as possible in the 50 free, really goes after it,” says

Heneghan, also a sprinter. “I try to save myself. “Maybe I should try to swim it the way Jon does.” Salomon also excels in the 100 free and 200 IM. His season-best time in the 100 free is 46.89 (No. 2 in Illinois in 2013-14) and only three others have gone faster in the 200 IM than Salomon (1:55.34) has this season. “Jon is all in, in everything,” Titans coach Keith MacDonald says. “He brings an intensity to our practices that makes our team better.” MacDonald won’t decide until after this weekend’s CSL South meet in the home water whether to slot Salomon — also a burner as a butterflyer — in two individual events and two relays or one individual event and three relays for the state series. Either decision would suit the 6-foot-2, 160-pound Salomon, a GBS fan first. “Our team is a lot stronger this year; I’m excited about it,” Salomon says. “Guys are tapering later. A bigger group is training in the mornings.” Last year’s Titans finished in a tie for 18th place at state, with Salomon touching third in the 200 IM (1:50.95) and ninth in

the 100 breaststroke (58.09) and swimming the lead-off leg of the ninth-place 200 free relay (1:25.81). “What he did in that relay (20.8 split) got us all pumped,” says Heneghan, a rookie state qualifier and leg No. 3 for the unit, which also included current senior Kevin Benson and 2013 graduate Tommy Cahill. “Energy — it gave me so much energy.” Salomon got the chlorine bug while watching his older brother, Andrew, win an age-group swim championship in the 100 free. “I thought, ‘Why not try swimming?’ ” the younger brother recalls. Jon Salomon embraced the sport, even the most challenging aspects of it, from the sometimes interminable practice sessions to the toll it took on his body. “It’s about waking up early for practices when nobody else is up, working hard and getting out of it what you put into it,” Salomon says. “I enjoy all of that. When you swim, you know where you stand [among peers]. It’s not an opinion sport like basketball, where people debate who the best guard is or who the best forward is. The sport of swimming … it plays no favorites.” ■

Scoring game-winner is a real rush for Siegien

■ by kevin reiterman

sports@northshoreweekend.com Fifteen minutes after the game and Jan Siegien was still feeling the effects. Still feeling the rush. The elation of making a game-winning shot at the buzzer is hard to shake. It stays with you for a while. “My heart is still beating pretty fast,” said the Glenbrook North junior, following his team’s 51-49 victory over visiting Niles North on Feb. 7. “Don’t worry,” he added, “I’m not going to pass out or anything.” And, if he did fall, senior guard Michael Keane — standing nearby — said he would be there to pick up his teammate. “Thanks, Michael,” said Siegien. The biggest assist of the night, however, belonged to

Brett Werner. The GBN senior guard, who triggered the inbounds play under the hosts’ basket, delivered the game-winning pass to Siegien. “Great pass by Brett,” said Siegien. “Great call by coach (David Weber). Great finish by Jan,” said Werner. With 1.7 seconds left in regulation, Siegien, who lined up on the left block, used a little deception to beat the man-toman coverage of Niles North standout Duante Stephens. “I went up like I was going to set the screen and then spun back around,” said Siegien, who took Werner’s toss and banked in a layup. “Siegien is a clutch player,” said Spartans center Cameron Liss. “He had a big second half for us.” The 6-foot-3, 210-pound Siegien, who has been playing varsity basketball since freshman year, finished the game with a game-high 22 points. He especially was effective in the middle of the third

quarter. In a two-minute span, Siegien, who averages 17 points per game, reeled off nine points. Notable: Liss put up solid numbers for the Spartans (6-14, 3-4). The 6-5 senior finished with eight points, six rebounds and two blocks. In fact, he had an instrumental role in the win. Liss came up with a basketball trifecta during a critical stretch late in the fourth quarter, when he blocked a shot, pulled down a rebound and hit two free throws in a matter of seconds to give GBN a 47-43 advantage. Most importantly, it stemmed the tide. Sparked by Stephens, who scored 11 of his team-high 17 points in the fourth quarter, the Vikings were on a 10-0 run. “We just had to keep our confidence,” he added. “And we did.” In other action, the Spartans fell to a solid Prospect team 53-41 on Feb. 8. Ethan Lutz led GBN with 12 points. Liss scored nine points. ■

Colorful and competitive GBS’s Moshi knows how to light up a wrestling match ■ by kevin reiterman

sports@northshoreweekend.com The written word will not do him justice. Sentences, punctuation marks and paragraphs can’t accurately describe Glenbrook South wrestler Denatra Moshi. He’s different. Special. Unique. Part whimsy. Part solemn. You have to see him to believe him. He’s camera ready. YouTube friendly. Instagram … it was made for Moshi. There are colorful athletes, and then there are C-O-L-O-R-F-U-L athletes. A couple of years ago, Moshi spotted some to-die-for Asics wrestling shoes. Had to have ’em. He was wooed by the color scheme: part aqua blue, part neon pink with a touch of yellow. “They’re funky,” said Moshi, owner of a gigantic smile. “I like to stick out.” He’s as much buoyant as he is flamboyant. “Wearing the ‘bubble gum’ shoes is his personality,” said best friend and sparring partner Peter Balabanos, who watched Moshi claim runner-up honors in the heavyweight division of the Class 3A Glenbrook South Regional on Feb. 8. “It’s his style.”

His flair doesn’t end there. Moshi also sports a Mohawk haircut. Dapper. Neatly trimmed. And mostly hidden — by headgear — when he’s out there grappling. But that tattoo of an Assyrian flag on his left shoulder? That’s a showpiece. That’s in full view. A conversation starter. “When people see my tattoo, I want them to ask me about it,” said Moshi, big smile still intact. “This is who I am.” He also likes to talk about his brothers. The Moshi household has produced its share of patriots. Two of his brothers are U.S. Marines and another one is in the U.S. Army. His passion right now might be wrestling but his ultimate mission is serving God and country. “He’s looking to join the Marines (after high school),” said Balabanos, who played in the trenches with Moshi during the Titans football season. “That’s why he dropped all the weight.” The GBS football program listed him at 298 pounds. He’s now at 255. Being fit has made a difference on the mat this winter. Moshi will take a 28-7 record into this weekend’s sectional at Barrington.

“What makes Moshi so good is his mental toughness,” Balabanos said. “He’s got a smile on his face, until it’s time to wrestle. That’s when he gets serious. He takes losing personally.” Moshi’s most vibrant match at the regional came in the semifinal bout against Prospect’s Alex Peck. The two were dead even until Moshi popped a cradle and pinned Peck early in the third period (4:33). “You don’t see a lot of heavyweights use the cradle,” said Moshi. “But sometimes I like to think of myself as a lightweight and just start shooting (for the legs).” In Albert Pujols-like fervor, Moshi pointed to the sky after his win over Peck. The championship match didn’t quite go as planned. He gave up a pair of escapes and wound up losing 3-2 in overtime to Hersey’s Tyler Cooke. “Next time I’m out there I will raise my intensity level,” said Moshi. Notable: GBS, which placed seventh in the team standings with 70 points, advanced two wrestlers to the sectional. Matt Meyer took second at 145 pounds. Meanwhile, Glenbrook North had one sectional qualifier: Anton Vahzinsky at 220. ■

One-derful: Glenbrook South’s Denatra Moshi is thankful after pinning his opponent in the regional semifinals.

Vanderkloot is an inspiration at McHenry Regional ■ by bob gosman

sports@northshoreweekend.com As a two-way starter on the offensive and defensive lines for the Deerfield High School football team, 215-pound senior David Vanderkloot knows how to match up against bigger players. That skill has served him well this season as an undersized heavyweight on the Warriors’ wrestling team. As a junior varsity wrestler last year, he wrestled at 195 pounds. This year, the varsity badly needed a heavyweight and Vanderkloot answered the challenge. At times, he is giving up as much as 70 pounds to his

opponent. It took him a while to adjust and he finished the regular season with a record shy of .500. Maybe he was just saving the best for the postseason. At Class 3A regional at McHenry on Feb. 8, Vanderkloot placed second and punched his ticket to this weekend’s Barrington Sectional. Barrington (155 points) topped Deerfield (142 points) to win the nine-team regional. In addition to Vanderkloot, the Warriors also advanced senior Joey Bloom (3rd place, 113), sophomore Andrew Mehrholz (2nd place, 120), senior Brian Spinello (2nd place, 126), senior Jeff Spinello (3rd place, 132), sophomore Sage Heller (2nd place, 138) and Colton Emmerich (1st place, 182).

“I’ve come a long way but this was still a huge surprise,” Vanderkloot said about advancing to the sectional tournament. “It was a shock but something I was really happy about.”
The Warriors said it was inspiring to watch Vanderkloot succeed at the regional. “We didn’t expect him to win some of those close matches because he was going up against guys that were so much bigger,” Heller said. “(Vanderkloot) has really come on and is wrestling well. It’s great that he took second.” Added coach Marc Pechter: “He’s been holding his own all year and he came up big for us when we really needed him.” ■

For Susie and Tom, life heats up in Tucson

We like to go to Tucson, Ariz. in the spring — right when you need a break from this kind of Chicago weather. It’s usually 80 degrees there. We stay at the Windmill Suites in northern Tucson by the Catalina Foothills. They have a swimming pool and spa. It’s also located in a nice shopping area, with boutiques and specialty restaurants. We go hiking in Sabino Canyon. We take a backpack with lunch and a camera. We take the tram to the furthest point — it’s at least a two-hour hike back. You see the occasional roadrunner. We stop to see waterfalls. It’s absolutely gorgeous. We also like to go to the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, which is a combination zoo and botanical garden. The habitats are beautiful — very welcoming. They have a hummingbird aviary that is so fun. If you have bright colors, they come right up to you.

One of our favorite things is to go to a gourmet grocery store that has a section with prepared foods and a wonderful wine selection. If we time it right, we go when the sun is setting, and we sit out on their covered porch and watch it set over the mountains. Our favorite restaurant for breakfast is in Tohono Chul Park. It’s such good food — very fresh, organic. Everyone there is very friendly. It’s a nice way to start off a day. Susie and Tom Beck, as told to David Sweet ■
