W

hen I taught a journalism class at Lake Forest College, one of my favorite moments was sharing my file entitled “Worst of Journalism,” a collection of eye-popping mistakes published from tiny weeklies to big-city dailies throughout the years. It encompasses about all one could imagine — from The New York Times misspelling Valujet in a headline to a Los Angeles-area publication printing a swear word above an item, when the editor badly mistyped “sheets” — but my favorite involved a story about birds. The 2005 piece featured the headline, “Yards bursting with bird song.” It included an illustration of a hummingbird flying upside down. The graphics department was asked to put in three photographs of cardinals to complete the package. That they did — three shots of white-collared folks with names like Mahony and Egan es-

pecially well-known among Catholics. This week, Sheryl DeVore — an avid birdwatcher who co-authored a book called “Birds of Illinois” chicago — shares with readers great spots to see colorful 773 404 2020 birds on the North Shore, including those who are simply stopping here before migrating elsewhere. And yes, Sheryl was the writer of that story which was unfortunately punctuated with ecclesiastical officials rather than red birds in a long-gone publication. Let’s hope that in these pages, where a5.14 BSM NSW May sale.indd 1 photo of a Baltimore oriole was suggested to accompany the story, we don’t end up with a smiling mug of Boog Powell. Enjoy the weekend.

Of a certain age New homes, historic houses both have their charms

180 Ravine Drive, Highland Park.

■ by bill mclean Don’t judge a house by its exterior. “I know of a house on the North Shore that looks vintage from the outside, with all of its charm and character and distinct architecture,” says Connie Dornan, a broker associate at @properties in Glenview. “But as soon as you enter the house through the front door, you immediately think, ‘This is new construction.’ “It was,” she adds, “completely gutted and rehabbed inside.”

“That old-home feel, inside and outside, still appeals to people.” | Ian Robinson, Coldwell Banker in Northbrook It’s an ideal old-new mix — for some. Others prefer the sturdy houses built before World War II, the residences that will likely never graduate to smart-home status. “Some of those houses were built like bomb shelters,” says Ian Robinson, branch manager at Coldwell Banker in Northbrook. “They’ve been around for close to 100 years and they’ll be around for another 100 years. The masonry

… so solid, very high quality. “That old-home feel, inside and outside, still appeals to people,” he adds. But new construction homes attract other buyers, despite the higher property tax rates that typically accompany them because of greater square footage, on average. Pros and cons exist for both historical and new construction abodes. An advantage of a new home is its builder’s warranty; a disadvantage of a historical home is its age — stone foundations aren’t sound forever, and floors don’t stay level forever. Majestic trees are clear plusses on the grounds of historical properties; a minus occasionally associated with new construction is adolescent foliage. “I like old, historic homes, but I also totally understand why people prefer new construction,” says Margie Brooks,

a broker at Baird & Warner in Highland Park. “There’s a lot less to worry about with a new home. You normally don’t have to pour money into it, year after year, like you do with some older homes.” One of Brooks’ featured listings is located at 247 Prospect Avenue, in Highland Park. Built in 1871, it has been renovated to accommodate luxurious modern living. “Everything inside is new and magnificent,” she says. “The basement was dug out, and now it’s fabulous. The whole place is exquisite and a pleasure to show.” But some buyers purchase a vintage/landmark house with the understanding that they’ll be limited — by their budget considerations in some cases, by strict village landmark real estate >> page 10

guidelines in others — when it comes to altering or rehabbing a house’s interior and exterior. “People who are fans of older homes will overlook the need to have, say, walk-in closets or super-modern amenities,” says Roberta Miller, a broker associate at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices KoenigRubloff Realty Group in Lake Forest. “It’s what they care about that matters, and it’s up to the broker to find that out. “Some,” she adds, “love a certain type of architecture, like the houses in ‘Mad Men.’ There’s something to be said for purchasing a house in a neighborhood that is charming with a longstanding, historical presence. There’s also something to be said for a buyer who works with a builder or architect who is able to translate that buyer’s vision into reality.” Milena Birov is vice president at Heritage Luxury Builders in Northfield and a broker at @properties in Winnetka. She is all for preserving the historic appearance of a block, as are her clients. “People in certain neighborhoods don’t want their new homes to look brand new … don’t want their homes to stick

2885 Highland, Northbrook.

out, especially along a street with beautiful, historical houses [with landmark designations],” Birov says. “I think it’s a great thing that North Shore villages have preservation committees.” The Kellogg Estate in Winnetka was built in the 1920s. The Pabst Manor in Glencoe appeared in 1936. The @properties-Winnetka listing agent for both is Susan Maman. “Homes likes those, they’re so interesting to me,” Maman says. “They require a special buyer, someone who is into history and unique architecture and beautiful, spacious grounds. “When you walk into one of those homes,” she adds, “you get a sense, a feel, for what it was like to live all those decades ago.” Jean Wright of Jean Wright Real Estate has lived in her Winnetka home on the lake for 54 years. “I’m a historic-house kind of girl,” she admits. “Go ahead, call me that. Young families from the city, they’re more interested in new construction. Not all are, but a lot are. An old North Shore house that has smart-house amenities inside is a house that features the best of both worlds. “It’s all about tastes and preferences, isn’t it?” she adds. “All people don’t like the same things. What I like is eating

coffee-flavored ice cream after putting coffee-flavored powder on it. What do you like?” Among the other advantages of new construction homes is basement depth. Families are spending more time at that level of the home, with the trendy additions of home theaters, sports courts (for basketball and volleyball) and bar areas. “The ceilings of basements in old homes are lower than they are in new homes,” Coldwell Banker’s Robinson says. “Owners back then generally used basements for storage. Floor plans in other areas of old homes are too chopped up and too compartmentalized for some people these days. Kitchens back then … they weren’t very big. They certainly weren’t built to contain an island you see in so many kitchens today.” But you can’t put a price tag on charm, and plenty of that emanates from the eye-popping homes that continue to age gracefully along the North Shore. “People like classic craftsmanship; they like history,” says @properties’ Dornan. “They tend to appreciate those qualities when they stroll by such beautiful, vintage homes. But there are also people out there who just like knowing they will be the first to live in a home. “People,” she adds, “like the smell of new construction.” ■

NEWS DIGEST REVIEW Deerfield

Despite community opposition, Fresh Thyme Farmers Market continues on with plans to open a store in Deerfield this summer. The specialty grocer conducted a job fair Saturday at the Courtyard Marriot. Residents near the Cadwell Corners shopping center, located at Waukegan and Lake Cook roads, have voiced opposition to the grocery, saying the store hours will disrupt the neighborhood. Residents also filed a lawsuit, challenging Deerfield’s granting of a special use permit for the grocery, but that suit has been dismissed. Fresh Thyme’s first store opened in Mount Prospect in late April. The grocer bills itself as a “specialty retailer focusing on fresh, healthy, natural and organic offerings.” It touts its produce department featuring organic and locally grown fruits and vegetables.

Anthony was also a leader with the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts and a member of the Optimists Club and Joseph M. Sesterhenn American Legion Post 166. It was Scouting that got Anthony his start with local volunteering. “They needed pack leaders and I was an Eagle Scout,” Anthony said. “I had to do something to lend a hand.” Anthony received the honor at Glenview’s 47th annual Civic Awards held April 25 at North Shore Country Club.

I only started doing standup about six months ago. So I am a little out of my comfort zone, but it is a great opportunity. I am definitely excited.” Bradford said there is not a lot of North Shore material in her act, which focuses a lot of relationship. “I keep people’s privacy as much as possible,” Bradford said. “Northbrook has been such a supportive community my whole life. It is special; it helped shape me.” Tickets for Bradford’s show and other festival performances may be purchased at www.Stage773.com, by phone at 773-3275252 or at the Stage 773 box office.

Bird’s-eye views abound on North Shore ■ by sheryl devore

Standing at Skokie Lagoons on a May day in front of a shrub whose leaves are not quite yet unfurled, I spot it: A scarlet red bird with jet black wings is perched, right at eye level. He’s traveled from the South America to land right here where I can watch him as he retrieves a caterpillar from beneath a leaf. He’s a scarlet tanager —one of more than roughly 200 migratory bird species that can be seen all along the North Shore in spring as they traverse from the southern United States, Central America and South America to their northerly breeding grounds. In May, I’ve heard bobolinks singing their rollicking serenades at Fort Sheridan Preserve and Middlefork Savanna. I’ve glimpsed 25 species of warblers in one day at Skokie Lagoons, the Botanic Garden and Ryerson Woods. I’ve walked along Lake Michigan’s shoreline glancing at graceful terns and shorebirds skittering on the sand at Gillson Park in Wilmette. Unlike chickadees, cardinals, goldfinches and other birds you may see in your yards and at local preserves year-round, migratory birds don’t spend all their time on the North Shore. In spring, woodland birds, shorebirds, grassland birds and wetland birds — all decked in their nuptial plumage — fly through the North Shore. Some will stay to breed in summer; others keep on going. Birds you can see along the North Shore in May include the Baltimore oriole, rosebreasted grosbeak, indigo bunting, scarlet tanager, summer tanager, up to 35 warbler species, up to 17 sparrow species, grassland birds including meadowlark and bobolink; flycatchers; thrushes; vireos; and copious shorebirds and wading birds. Migratory birds often follow Lake Michigan and the Des Plaines River on their journeys. Vegetation along the waterways provides the food and rest these birds need. Here’s a list of some of my favorite North Shore birding spots, with a suggestion on what you might see there. The best time to bird is early in the morning and early in the evening. Wear appropriate clothing and bring binoculars.

Skokie River Nature Preserve, Lake Forest Open Lands, Lake Forest Location: From Green Bay Road and West Laurel Avenue, go west to the end of Laurel Avenue and park. Walk the trail along the Skokie River searching for woodland birds especially warblers, vireos, flycatchers and orioles. This preserve is the former site of a spring bird banding station, and I once retrieved a magnolia warbler and a white-throated sparrow from a net here: they were banded and released. Visit lfola.org Fort Sheridan Forest Preserve Location: At Sheridan and Old Elm Road, continue east into the Fort Sheridan area. Follow signs to the preserve. With its access to Lake Michigan, open grassland and wooded ravines, this preserve offers a look at nearly all groups of migratory birds from meadowlarks, bobolinks and sparrows in the grasslands to terns and shorebirds over the lake to songbirds in the ravines. Migratory hawks also fly by. Visit lcfpd.org Middlefork Savanna, Lake Forest Location: At Route 43 and Middlefork Drive, turn west and drive to the parking lot. Wooded ponds and savannas live in this rare ecosystem where you’ll find nesting bobolinks and meadowlarks in grasslands and wetland birds such as great egrets and great blue herons foraging. Visit lcfpd.org Ryerson Woods Location: The entrance is off Riverwoods Road, south of Everett Road and north of Deerfield Road. Here’s where I found my first blue-winged warbler, black-throated blue warbler, Connecticut warbler, and — well you get the picture. It’s my favorite spot to bird in May. At the east-facing group of trees and shrubs in the Brushwood Center Parking lot, birds including warblers, orioles and tanagers are quite active in the early morning – and there’s usually someone there to tell you what you’re seeing. Visit lcfpd.org

Chicago Botanic Garden Loc ation: Main entrance is off Lake-Cook Road just west of Green Bay Road. You can find migratory woodland birds nearly everywhere but especially in the woods and at the waterfall and water gardens. By the prairie, you’ll find several wetlands, which hold shorebirds and waders such as egrets and herons. I once stood in parking Lot No. 2 on an early morning in May – and the trees were dripping with warblers. Visit chicagobotanic. org

As a junior at Deerfield Academy — a time when getting prepared for the SATs and starting the college search takes time away from classes — Emily Abrams decided to create a cookbook as well. Between homework assignments during the evening, she’d write. “I think the biggest challenge was finding the time to be doing it well,” says Abrams, a Highland Park native. “ There was the thought I might just finish it in college.” Instead, Don’t Cook the Planet — a collection of more than 70 recipes from wellknown chefs and celebrities, with thoughts about how to combat climate change sprinkled throughout — was published this spring (Triumph Books, $25.95). In a few weeks, Abrams, 19, will graduate from the Massachusetts preparatory school before matriculating at the University of Southern California in the fall. Already, she’s traveled to Berkeley, Calif. and New York City for book signings. In April, she appeared at Strand Bookstore, founded in 1927 in Manhattan, with Michael Oppenheimer — a climate change scientist at Emily Abrams Princeton University —to converse about the book. “The small choices make a difference,” she told the audience, when asked about what readers should take away from the book. “Not buying Styrofoam anymore, buying in bulk – tips like that.” The idea for the book originated in November 2012, as Abrams planned a trip to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro with

Teen finds the recipe for helping the planet

Highwood chef Gabriel Viti, among others. As she started to hear theories about how climate change might melt the snow on the African mountain, “we realized we hadn’t seen a book about the integration between climate change and food,” she says. A primer on how to launch a vegetable garden is included in Don’t Cook the Planet. There are question-and answer features, such as “Why choose tap water?” Abrams even interviews a U.S. senator about organic farming. The mix of recipe contributors comprises well-known chefs — such as Stephanie Izard of Girl & the Goat in Chicago — and celebrity environmental champions, including Robert Redford, Richard Branson and Chevy Chase (Robert F. Kennedy Jr. wrote the foreword). Local chefs contribute, including Viti of Miramar Bistro sharing his recipe for linguini with fresh gulf shrimp, while James A. Lovell Jr. and James A. Lovell III of the e p o ny m o u s Lake Forest restaurant o f fe r a look at summer b e r r y torte. All proceeds from the cookbook will be donated illustration by barry blitt t o n o n - p r o f i t organizations. Abrams’ mother, Wendy, helped recruit many of the environmental and political names for the book. She founded Cool Globes, an exhibition that featured more than 120 globes in Chicago in 2007 with the idea of raising awareness about climate change. Then 12, Emily helped by

sending a letter to children around the world, who responded with notes saying “Stop Global Warming” in their own language. A t D e er f ield , she became further enamored with the topic thanks to an advanced-placement course called Cambridge Global Capstone that had just been unveiled. Unlike many courses, regurgitating information for a test was not the goal. “We would have a debate on fracking or speak to the class for five minutes on clean water,” she says. “One of my projects was climate change on the Colorado River. The teacher would come at you with questions, and you had to defend your opinions on the spot. It was everything a class should be to get a rise out of someone.”

“The small choices make a difference. Not buying Styrofoam anymore, buying in bulk – tips like that.” | Emily Abrams When asked how she would persuade those who are skeptical about the claims behind climate change to champion her views, she acknowledged she’s not a scientist or an expert. “But there are millions of articles and scientific findings that prove climate change is real,” she says. “I think it’s important for people to be aware of this issue and know that it will be the defining issue of our generation.” Abrams notes she has tried every recipe in the book (“some of them take a long time to make”) and, though she hasn’t considered another project, if she did it would again be a cookbook. During the recent Earth Day, Abrams spoke via Skype with BiteSizeTV in Los Angeles, discussing her book and her thoughts. Asked what else she did that day, she said she simply attended classes. No grand undertaking to mark the annual nod to the environment? “I don’t think it should be designated as just one day,” she explains. “We should take these steps to help the Earth every day.” ■

love & marriage

Choice of bridal gifts does not register I just flew in from Boston — and boy, are my arms tired (cue laughter). It was a 31-hour whirlwind for the express purpose of attending a bridal shower. The only thing harder than making my 7:40 a.m. flight out of O’Hare was traveling with a gift for the bride-to-be. You see, I pared my weekend needs down to one overnight bag as carry-on luggage, so my gift to the bride had to be compact. It also had to be lightweight and durable enough to survive the overhead bin. It needed to pass TSA inspection, too. Finally, the gift had to be fabulous. I am, after all, the mother of the ring bearer. The first of these requirements eliminated most all of my go-to shower gifts, like the super-fluffy towels that no woman who has been married for longer than five years would ever buy for herself, a crystal vase for the groom to fill with flowers when he needs to apologize, or a bouquet of kitchen utensils that few new brides know what to do with. I have been known to include a set of bamboo toast tongs in such a bouquet (it

was on the registry!), despite my belief that it is a most useless tool. I started my quest for a fabulous gift by browsing the bridal registry but found little to get excited about. Baskets are too bulky, potholders too boring, and corkscrews too lethal for air travel. I asked several friends about their favorite shower gifts and received lots of good advice — but none of it met my travel requirements. Plush bathrobes for the bride and groom sound luxurious. Decorations for every holiday is a really creative gift idea, and the Internet enables you to buy Easter wreaths most any month of the year. Crystal toasting flutes for the wedding reception are sentimental, especially when paired with a dated Waterford Christmas ornament in the shape of the same flutes. It’s a great idea when my most outdoorsy friends registered at REI for camping equipment a few years ago, or my husband’s tailgate buddy requested a meat grinder that I was sure he’d actually use. But this bride and groom were not so bold. I went back to browsing the registry – which was shrinking every day, as other shower attendees quickly gobbled

up the few items in my price range. Some other shower guest beat me to the stainless steel muddler, but I sensed a definite cocktail theme on the register and ran with it. A book of cocktail recipes, monogrammed drink coasters and some cocktail stirrers met all my gifting requirements — and seemed to put a smile on the bride’s face. To this summer’s brides, I urge you to save your guests the stress I suffered: • Set up your registry before the shower invitations are mailed. Guests like me buy gifts as soon as the invitation arrives, and we like to have options. • Register for a lot of items in price ranges to fit a variety of budgets. • Register for untraditional items if they

reflect you as a couple. I was just as happy buying a high-end camping stove as I was a crystal vase. But don’t leave out the traditional items. If you’re inheriting a grandmother’s crystal stemware, register for a water pitcher or ice bucket to match. Not all wedding guests will shop for your camping stove. And please, please send thank you notes promptly. I spent a lot of time picking just the right gift, and I like to be reminded that it was as meaningful for you as I intended it to be. Did you receive a shower gift that sticks with you long after your wedding day? Tell me about it in an email t o joanna@northshoreweekend.com ■

CredIt rePaIr fOr HOmeBuyers So, what is credit repair, exactly, and why should a homebuyer care about it? If, like many Americans, your credit is in the middle-of-the-road, here are a few considerations you should make concerning credit repair. First off all, credit repair refers to two processes: Correcting mistakes on your credit report (for victims of fraud or identity theft, this is of essential importance) or improvement of your credit score by means of adopting more positive financial habits. An individual has three separate credit reports from the major credit report companies, Experian, Equifax and TransUnion. These reports are unique to the companies, and your overall credit score is derived from the findings of all three reports. An error on any one of these reports could significantly impact your credit score, thus lowering your chances of qualifying for a loan. By requesting copies of all three reports and correcting any erroneous reports, you raise your credit score, are more likely to quality for a home loan, and additionally, are aware of any fraudulent activity that might have occurred under your name. The second type of credit repair involves creating better financial habits to raise your credit rating. Past bad credit, a history of missed bill payments, bankruptcy, foreclosure and divorce can all negatively impact your credit score and stand in the way of loan qualification. Taking on more responsibility for your credit by reducing your debt, creating a budget that you can stick to, paying bills on time, and avoiding new lines of credit can help to improve your credit score, as well as add to your savings. In the wake of the housing market’s recent past, many “credit repair” companies have sprung up, eager to capitalize on citizens who are trying to do the right thing and who are already on shaky ground. Be aware that many such companies are scams—the companies generally charge their clients for the first type of credit repair—finding errors on your credit reports. Though time consuming and oftentimes frustrating, this is a process that the consumer is able to complete independent of any company. No company can assist in the second type of credit repair—only you can adopt better financial habits. Finally, many of these credit repair companies have pending complaints with the Better Business Bureau, resulting from companies taking their client’s money and not resolving the credit repairs in a timely fashion. As with any part of the home buying process, being aware and informed is the first step to arming yourself with the knowledge that will make you a responsible homeowner and a good credit risk for lenders.

Game on!

Glenbrook South’s Peters hunts, fishes — and stands out on a soccer field ■ by bill mclean

sports@northshoreweekend.com The contrast is striking. Olivia Peters, the Glenbrook South soccer player, is nothing like Olivia Peters, the teen who likes to escape from Glenview to Kankakee up to five times a year. As a high-scoring sophomore forward for the Titans, Peters tirelessly sprints and cuts and kicks on fields. She’s a dervish — in soccer togs. As the daughter of Dan Peters, she sits with her father in either a tree stand or a boat for hours and hours on a 50-acre area owned by her father. She’s motionless — in hunting gear. Dan Peters passed his love for hunting down to his daughter. “The first time I went hunting with him, I didn’t have my hunting license,” says Peters, who got her hunting license when she was 11 or 12. “I just watched him. We went somewhere in McHenry County. “I’m a big outdoors person; it’s so much fun to hunt for deer and turkeys with my dad, to fish with him. We’ve spent so much time sitting together and talking on our trips, there isn’t anything we don’t know about each other.” Olivia Peters has been targeted by opposing teams as one of the Titans to neutralize — or risk the fraying of nets and a lopsided loss. Peters scored a combined eight goals in four matches at the Glenbrook Cup on May 2-3, helping the Titans (14-3-1) capture their fourth Cup title in five years at the Techny Prairie Park and Fields in Northbrook. “Olivia is a special player who has had to face the challenges of double-teams, sometimes triple-teams,” says Titans soccer coach Seong Ha, whose squad edged Warren 2-1 for the Cup championship on May 3, hours after downing previously undefeated Normal West High School 5-2 in semifinal. “She’s an aggressive player, with a high level of energy and a high work rate. “It’s exciting, knowing she’ll get to play two more years for our program.” Peters has already matched her goal total (23) from last year, when she was a freshman on a senior-laden Glenbrook South unit that reached a Class 3A sectional final. The FC United U-16 club player is still surrounded by talented Titans teammates, including junior midfielder and FC United U-17 player Kaily Bruch. “Olivia,” Bruch says, “is such a strong player, and she has improved as a goal scorer. Her game, overall, has improved. “[Of the field],” she adds, “Olivia is very outgoing, energetic, happy and excited.” Peters was thrilled to be a part FC United’s Disney Showcase U-16 championship team in late 2013. She dished the assist on the match-winning goal in the final. “That was such a team effort,” Peters says of her team’s 3-0-1 showing at the national tourney. “It took our forwards, our midfielders, our defenders, our goalkeeper … everybody. The team aspect, I’ve always enjoyed that part of soccer. “We practiced hard for that, worked hard for that. It was fun to be with friends while putting in 80 minutes of constant effort.” After matches, she sometimes talks soccer with her favorite hunting partner, who played mostly hockey while growing up. “I did not get the skating gene,” Olivia Peters says. “Sometimes, following my games, my dad and I butt heads. But he’s usually pretty chill then and can tell when I don’t feel like talking,” There’s usually plenty of time for catching up later, after a pair of lures descend in a certain pond in Kankakee. Notable: Bruch was highly productive in the first five minutes of the second half of Glenbrook South’s 5-2 defeat of Normal West in a Glenbrook Cup semifinal on May 3, scoring two goals and assisting on a goal from Peters. … Peters had a goal and an assist in the 2-1 win over Warren in the Cup final. … The Titans’ victorious goalkeeper in four Cup matches last weekend was senior Jessica Vassallo. … GBS outscored its Cup foes 22-3. ■

Great outdoors: Glenbrook South’s Olivia Peters controls the ball against a Maine South defender during action last week.

Holohan twins turbocharge GBN ■ by bob gosman

sports@northshoreweekend.com Glenbrook North twin sisters Caitrin and Maggie Holohan had waited for this moment for a long time. Girls lacrosse coach Tom Rosenbaum had waited even longer. On April 5, after years of frustration, the Spartans defeated Lake Forest High School 12-7 at home on the school’s new field turf. It was the first victory over the Scouts in the 15-year history of the program. “ The whole day was surreal,” Rosenbaum said. “It was a gorgeous, sunny day and before the game I told the players to enjoy it, that this is why we play the game. Once the game ended, the players rushed the goalie (to celebrate). We all stuck around for 45 minutes. No one wanted to leave the field.” Certainly not the Holohan sisters. As four-year varsity players, they wanted to savor every moment. For the season, Glenbrook is 14-2 and 4-1 in conference (through Monday). “The program has grown every year,” Caitrin Holohan said. “Each year, more good players have joined the team. We came out with the attitude that we could win the game against Lake Forest and that showed on the (field).” Added Rosenbaum: “The freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors all (get along). We are getting more athletic players into the program and everyone is excited to play the game.” Rosenbaum said both sisters have excellent leadership skills. “They’re gifted athletically and academically and they’re always positive on the field,” he said. “Their (attitude)

is contagious. People want to work hard for them.” Glenbrook North has not always had great chemistry but this year the squad gets along better than ever before. In fact, that competitive drive was on full display earlier this season during a spirited team-building game of laser tag. “We split up into two teams and only played for about 15 minutes but everyone was out of breath because of how competitive it was,” Maggie Holohan said. “It was so much fun.” Caitrin Holohan said this year’s team has a will to improve, whether it’s in practice or matches. “We have more of a drive this year,” she said. “Everyone likes the fastpaced nature of lacrosse and wants to get better.” Since being introduced to the sport in seventh grade, the sisters have focused on improving their skill level. This has culminated with standout senior seasons. Caitrin Holohan went over the century mark with 10 draw controls against Libertyville High School on Monday, giving her 104 for the season to go along with 39 goals and 26 assists. “Caitrin is probably our best allaround athlete and she has (great) knowledge of the game,” Rosenbaum said. “Other teams key on her and yet she still finds a way to be successful.” Maggie Holohan has contributed 62 goals and 22 assists along with 92 draw controls. “Maggie is so consistent and when she talks, people listen,” Rosenbaum said. ■

Fraser closes in on school scoring record ■ by bob gosman

sports@northshoreweekend.com

Glenbrook North junior Lindsay Fraser can only chuckle when asked what her introduction to water polo was like. “If you had asked me what water polo was before my freshman year I would have had no idea,” she said. “Even on the first day of practice, I remember the seniors were explaining the rules and I was so confused. I had no idea what I was getting into.” By the end of that year she started to like water polo and just a few short years later she is on pace to break the Glenbrook North single-season record for goals (109). Through Sunday, she had already found the net 102 times. Her performance has helped the Spartans win 13 of their first 17 games. “It’s been great to see how much she has improved,” senior goalie Kerry Goodspeed said. “She’s really fast and moves so well in the water.” Interestingly, Fraser’s unfamiliarity with water polo was not a result of a myopic focus on swimming. In fact, she did not do any competitive swimming prior to high school. In swimming, she has progressed to the point where she competed on a relay at the 2013 IHSA state swimming meet. Fraser played on the lower level water polo team as a freshman before making the varsity as a sophomore. She proved she

belonged on the varsity by scoring 51 goals and distributing 33 assists. “She was someone that demonstrated that she was going to be a good player,” Glenbrook North coach Robin Walker said. “Her swimming skills kept getting getter as did her water polo. She developed into

the whole package.” At the end of her freshman season, she became increasingly interested in water polo and elected to start playing year round. That was a major catalyst for her game and this past summer she traveled out of state several times for key tournaments.

Fraser’s versatility makes her an increasingly difficult matchup for opponents. “She has a large repertoire of ways she can score,” Walker said. “We can use her as a driver and we can put her in an offensive hole set. We move her around so she’s harder to target.” Fraser plays water polo instinctively, but now she’s learning to become a student of the game. The extra knowledge she is accumulating is playing an increasingly bigger role in her approach to water polo. “I realized I needed to become smarter and more strategic about how I played,” she said. “I’ve been focused on trying to elevate my game.” Throughout the season, she has had some great duals in practice with Goodspeed, the team’s standout goalie. “She knows how to get around people,” Goodspeed said. “She has long arms and it can be intimidating to watch her swim up to you. She swims with intensity and the full intention of scoring.” In turn, going up against Goodspeed in practice every day helps Fraser prepare for anything she might see from a goalie in a real match. “It can be disheartening because she can block anything, but it prepares you so well,” Fraser said. “You learn to really focus on your shooting and placement.” ■

Kellow clicking for the Warriors

and connecting [via passes].” Kellow’s older sister, Amanda, is a sophomore environmental science at the University of Wisconsin. The 2012 DHS graduate also played soccer for Warriors teams, setting herself apart with crowdpleasing flip throw-ins. “My sister … she really misses soccer,” says Emily Kellow, who might pursue soccer at the college level. Kellow’s focus now is on her 10-8-1 team, which went 2-1 at last weekend’s Glenbrook Cup. Its Cup loss was to an undefeated squad from Normal West High School. “Emily,” Grady says, “doesn’t take herself too seriously. She doesn’t act like she’s a big deal, but she is — she’s a key goal scorer for us.” Kellow has a way of duping the opposition into thinking she’s spent. “There are times when you look at her [during a match] and she’s appears exhausted,” Grady says. “But that’s usually when she kicks it in suddenly and — boom! — she’s gone.” Kellow does just the opposite when a camera is in her vicinity. Boom! — she’s there, smiling and startling the person behind the lens.

sports@northshoreweekend.com En route to a Glenbrook Cup opener, Deerfield High School soccer goalkeepers Samantha Soloway, Sari Eisen and Sarah Blumenfeld attempted to pose for a goalies-only photo. But a junior forward on the team “bombed” it, popping her beaming face among the keepers just as the image was captured on May 2. The trio posed again for another picture. “I got in it again,” recalls Emily Kellow, the fun-loving meddler. “I kept doing that.” It was easy for the Warriors to forgive Kellow for her antics, because Kellow is all business when she hits soccer pitches. The 5-foot-7, third-year varsity forward scored her ninth goal of the season — and 32nd of her career — in Deerfield’s 3-1 defeat of Bradford (Wis.) High School in a Glenbrook Cup opener at Techny Prairie Park and Fields in Northbrook. “She’s a very, very talented player,” Warriors soccer coach Rich Grady says, adding that Kellow, a naturally right-footed player, had used her left foot to tally more than half of her goals this spring. “Very fast, very good technically … a really good goal scorer.” Four of Kellow’s first eight goals this spring were match-winners. But her biggest clincher to date occurred last year in a Class 2A Lakes Sectional semifinal against St. Viator. Kellow’s breakaway goal was the difference in a 4-3 overtime victory. It also capped a rally from a 3-1 deficit. “Emily is a great part of the team, always cheery, always helping our younger players, always working hard,” says senior forward JoElla Guagliardo. “She’s a great player who wants what’s best for the team. “What’s she’s really good at,” the

tri-captain adds, “is receiving a ball and then going. Fast — she’s really fast.” With endurance to boot. Kellow went out for the cross country team for the first time last fall. She didn’t run for the varsity, but the time she spent training and traversing three-mile courses is paying off these days.

“My recovery time is better after I sprint [in matches],” Kellow says. “I enjoyed experiencing another sport, and I will run cross country again my senior year, though it’s much more of an individual sport compared to soccer. “I really love the team atmosphere in soccer, playing together, playing for one another

Notable: Sophomore forward Margot Sylvan and freshman midfielder Sydney Barber scored Deerfield’s other two goals in the Warriors’ 3-0 defeat of Bradford on May 2. Soloway recorded the shutout in the Glenbrook Cup opener, and freshman defender Mirelle Haas provided a pair of assists. Junior midfielder Ashley Imyak fed the other assist. … In a Cup match on May 3, Barber, on an assist from senior midfielder and tri-captain Logan Just, netted Deerfield’s goal in a 3-1 loss to Normal West. Belvidere North then forfeited its scheduled match with Deerfield. ■

H2 Oh! Hara, Harlan buoy Deerfield volleyball ■ by jeff davis

sports@northshoreweekend.com

Senior Zach Hara knows the importance of his “role” as a captain for the Deerfield High School volleyball team. “It’s an honor,” the 6-foot-2 outside hitter says. “I think a lot of people look up to me, and I try to be the best role model that I can on the court through my play and through my emotions.” “Zach is one of our vocal leaders on the court,” Deerfield coach Eugene Chung adds. “He’s always been kind of the guy that’s either cheering a teammate on or pushing him to be better.” Hara and Deerfield have had lots to cheer about both last season and this spring. Hara is one of 10 seniors that returned from the Warriors’ first team in school history to reach the state quarterfinals, ending its special season with a 25-20, 22-25, 25-17 loss to Downers Grove South to finish with a 32-7 record. This season, Deerfield has picked up where it left off, compiling a 17-4 mark. The highlight came Monday when the host Warriors beat 11-time defending Central Suburban League North champion Glenbrook North 23-25, 25-20, 25-18 behind terrific defense and solid serving to hand the Spartans their first league loss this season. It was Deerfield’s first win over GBN since the teams shared the CSL North crown in 2009 and only the second time its seniors have beaten the Spartans.

“We came totally under the radar last year, and this year it’s completely different,” Hara says. “We’re in the press a lot. People know about us now. We have a lot of high expectations for ourselves. We want the big trophy at the end of this year. We don’t want to cut it short. We felt like we got cut short last year.” Hara (11 kills, 9 digs, 2 blocks, ace) and fellow all-conference returnee and threeyear varsity player John Harlan (17 kills, 12 digs) led Deerfield against GBN. “The two are my dynamic duo,” Chung says of his leaders who are both ranked among the top 30 players in the area. “Zach is a terrific player. He’s obviously a very strong hitter, he’s also a very gifted passer and server. He’s back there serving and I’m calling zones and he’s hitting every single one of these zones and making it tough on other team’s offenses to get into a rhythm. He’s really grown quite a bit over the years. “John is one of my best passers, he is a very smart hitter and he’s also a very good defensive player. Guys are always picked up whenever he’s on the court because he can do so much.” Hara, who boasts a 36-inch vertical leap, worked to prepare for what he hoped would be a special season for the Warriors. “Through reps at (Chicago Bounce Volleyball Club), hard work over the summer, I played beach, I do lessons, every touch that I can get is helpful,” Hara says. “I’m always doing whatever I can to grow. I think I’ve gotten stronger as a player, I’m

hitting harder, I jump higher now.” Neither Hara nor Harlan plan to play volleyball in college, with Hara turning down seven offers to play at the next level. “I want to get the full college experience,” Hara says of his decision. But before then, Hara will continue to enjoy playing with fellow seniors Harlan, Eric Slepian, Eli Schmidt, Adam Nadler, Myles Grossman, Jeffrey Rabin, Jason Kornreich, Jayson Lehrman and Michael Sherman. ■

Style & substance

GBS’s Tursi plays the game with pride and pizzazz ■ by kevin reiterman

sports@northshoreweekend.com

He plays with unquestionable flair and style. But don’t be fooled by all of the cool mannerisms. Or, the hip look. Or, the fact that he — @therealrio_5 — has sent out nearly 12,000 tweets. His glove is in the right place. And so is his heart. Glenbrook South senior Mario Tursi is a truly gifted shortstop with a unique skill set. “He likes to look good when he plays. That’s just who he is,” said Titans head baseball coach Steve Stanicek, making note of Tursi’s long hair, goatee, signature wristbands and fancy home-game spikes (neon lime soles). “Mario,” the coach added, “marches to the beat of his own drum.” Stanicek is super cool with allowing Mario to be Mario. “We don’t try to cookie-cutter our kids,” the coach added. Tursi (6-foot-1, 160 pounds) plays his position with a great deal of elegance. He’s got good range and a plus arm. He’s as instinctive as he is colorful. According to Stanicek, he makes difficult plays look easy. “He’s blessed with a lot of ability, but he also works hard at it,” the coach said. “I care a lot about my defense,” said Tursi, who is ranked No. 79 in the 2014 class by the Prep Baseball Report. “I’m playing in the middle of the diamond. I have to take pride in it.” On April 30, in a 16-5 win over host New Trier, Tursi was a highlight-reel machine. The senior made a play up the middle that Derek Jeter of the Yankees — Tursi’s favorite player — could appreciate. “You should have seen it,” said Stanicek. “It was … ESPN-ish.” “Definitely, a web gem,” added teammate Jack Molitor. For Tursi, the perfect shortstop template is Derek Jeter. He’s patterned his game after the future Hall of Famer. “It’s going to be tough when he retires (after the 2014 season),” said Tursi. “You can’t go wrong following a player like Jeter.” So far, most things have turned out just right for Tursi, a two-year varsity starter. The side-arm throwing shortstop was sidelined for 20 days after sustaining a hip flexor injury while running to first base during GBS’s game against Stevenson on April Fool’s day. But he’s been able to bounce back — fairly quickly. “Not being able to play and having to just watch games wasn’t easy for him,” said Stanicek. “But it did give him extra motivation (to get back on the field). We’re glad to have him back.” “I’m not at 100 percent yet, but it’s not enough to keep me out of the lineup,” said Tursi. “During the

recovery, I couldn’t run and it hurt to swing bat.” To his credit, neither his defense nor his offense suffered. Batting in the sixth hole, Tursi currently is hitting .333 with 11 runs and 11 RBIs. He’s only struck out four times in 45 plate appearances for the red-hot Titans (17-3). “I like the way he competes at the plate,” said Stanicek. “He doesn’t have a lot of wasted at-bats. “He’s worked hard on his hitting,” the coach added. “And he’s come into his own this year.” Playing on a winner is nothing new for Tursi. For the past four summers, he played club baseball with a perennial powerhouse: the Schaumburg Seminoles. He was the starting shortstop for the 15s team which won the Continental Amateur Baseball Association’s (CABA) World Series. But his baseball career is far from ending. His skills — and his Twitter account — figure to translate quite nicely to the college game. He’ll play Division I baseball at SIUEdwardsville next year. “Loved the campus, loved the turf field,” said Tursi. “I found the school very appealing.” Notable: Stanicek has come up with an ideal batting order — the No. 1, No. 3, No. 5 and No. 7 hitters bat

from the left side while the No. 2, No. 4, No. 6 and No. 8 hitters bat from the right side— and he’s sticking with it. “Our batting order is pretty automatic right now,” said Stanicek. “We’re pretty blessed to have it this way. All the credit goes to the kids. They have settled into their roles.” GBS is on a roll. After sweeping New Trier 16-5, 3-1 in a home and away series, the Titans defeated Loyola Academy 12-1 on May 2 and Highland Park 8-2 on May 3. In the 16-5 win over NT, Connor Pauly (3 hits), Tursi (3 hits) and Tommy O’Hara (2 hits, 4 RBIs) led the way. In the 3-1 win over NT, Ben Samborn had a two-run double while Mike Lenckos starred on the mound (6 hits, 5 Ks). O’Hara led the attack against LA, He went 3-for-3 with a two-run homer over the center-field fence. D.J. Dillon (RBI double), Jacob Libman (2 hits), Pauly (2 hits), Samborn (RBI double) and Tursi (RBI double) also helped the cause. Fitz Stadler was the winning pitcher. And against HP, Cody Carroll (3 hits, 2 RBIs) and Samborn (3 hits, 3 RBIs) paced the offense. David Thompson got the win. Libman (1.2 IP) recorded four strikeouts and picked up the save. ■

38 | perfect weekend For Jon and Sophie heading to Michigan is second nature

When Sophie and Jon Twichell yearn to get away, they hop in their car and drive seven hours to Grayling, Mich. Once there, the Lake Bluff couple engages in a variety of activities, including fly-fishing (Jon), birding (Sophie) and paddling canoes or kayaks (both). “We love to quietly float and see what wonders reveal themselves,” Sophie notes. “It might be a muskrat swimming along the bank, a neon blue mayfly landing on the kayak, or a heron silently fishing.” Jon is a big fan of the Au Sable River, which he considers to possess the best fly-fishing in the Midwest. “Nothing beats a day on the river getting up close and personal with a brown and brook trout,” he says. Grayling is home to North America’s rarest songbird, Kirtland’s Warbler. After wintering in the Bahamas, the warbler returns to Michigan each summer. Featuring a bright yellow breast and bobbing tail, “it’s a thrill to see this small bird,” Sophie notes, which once was close to extinction. The Twichells often go hiking at Hartwick Pines State Park, where Sophie loves to look for pileated woodpeckers (a crow-sized woodpecker) and evening grosbeaks. After a great day in nature, they say nothing tops it off like a hamburger at Spike’s Keg O Nails. — David Sweet
