Let’s get the word out: Dublin is a great city. p2

The Little Museum of Dublin History comes to life at this brilliant new museum of Dublin, housed in one of the city’s finest Georgian townhouses. The Little Museum of Dublin is a new non-profit museum that tells the story of Dublin in the 20th century. Social, cultural and political history are presented through a collection which has been completed with the help of the public.

Dublin: Ireland’s Proud Capital It is often said Dubliners are a proud people. That is certainly true of many Dubliners. However, there is a striking lack of civic pride in some quarters. Many of us fail to challenge crass caricatures of the capital. Dublin is the capital of our country, and there has never been a more important time to assert its identity as a vibrant place with a proud history, a young and dynamic population and an exciting future. That’s what these classes are all about.

I Love Dublin: The Format Arriving at the museum, students are welcomed by the director and asked a question: Why love Dublin? History, architecture, people, customs and politics are all introduced and discussed. The class is then given a guided tour of the museum and invited to explore the collection for themselves and ask questions about the city’s history. Dublin’s rich and complex personality is celebrated on this tour, which is both educational and entertaining. Following the tour and exploration, students are introduced to a fellow Dubliner of a different generation for a brief question and answer session about what life was like for them as a child. Students are then asked to explain what Dublin means to them: Why love Dublin? The class votes for a winner. Finally, each student is presented with an ‘I Love Dublin’ certificate. The winning student records their answer in our recording facility at the museum, which is then made available to visitors to the museum and online.

Background Trevor White is the Director of the Little Museum of Dublin, and was the founding publisher of The Dubliner magazine. Dublin remains the subject of White’s work at City of a Thousand Welcomes, a new civic initiative to introduce tourists to hospitable Dubliners, and at the Little Museum of Dublin on St Stephen’s Green. Both projects are supported by three key stakeholders: Dublin Regional Authority, Dublin City Council and Fáilte Ireland. “Working on this initiative has encouraged me to see Dublin anew,” says White. “It’s important for the city to assert its own identity – for the good of the capital, but also for the good of the country.” p4

City of a Thousand Welcomes is an exciting new civic initiative that promotes Dublin as a place where tourists can receive outstanding hospitality. We connect first-time visitors with proud Dubliners. The meeting is hosted by our patrons, at no cost to either party. The shortterm goal is to give visitors a really positive first impression of Dublin. The long-term goal is to bolster the city’s reputation as a place where ‘great hospitality’ is more than just a slogan.

Purpose The purpose of these classes is to awaken a sense of civic pride in the young people of Dublin. As we move forward in repairing our economy, the young people of Dublin will play a vital role in securing the long term sustainability of tourism in Ireland. Knowing and loving the city is a key factor in this reconstruction. We hope to instil a greater sense of community in our young people by introducing them to a diverse range of fellow citizens, primarily those of other generations. We want to equip the young people of Dublin with a lifelong love of their city and an awareness of those who live in it. p5
