Everybody wants to know the best in town. We decided to find out the Best in Lawrence once and for all. We came up with five major subject areas: Community, Food, Going Out, Retail and Services. Next, we compiled a list of more than 130 categories, from best art gallery to best weekend getaway, from best burger to best wine list, from best neighborhood to best shoe store. Then we put it to a vote — your vote. The turnout was impressive: In all, more than 7,500 of you went to Lawrence.com to cast ballots — more votes than Mike Amyx, the top vote-winner in the recent City Commission election, received. Weaver’s Department Store isn’t just another clothing store on Massachusetts Street; it’s a Lawrence landmark. With more than 155 years of service, the store has gathered a loyal clientele and has built a longstanding reputation. “It’s an older department store but I can come and find all kinds of stuff here,” Susy Felts, a Weaver’s customer, said. For Kansas Sampler, license plate holders are a big deal. Sure, the store also has T-shirts and other apparel, but according to Andrea Carroll — director of marketing for Kansas Sampler and Rally House — it’s the attention paid to other items that also keeps Kansas University fans coming back. “What we want to make sure, when it comes to license plate frames, is that we don’t just have the two that everyone else has; we’d better have seven,” Carroll said. “If we can get a license plate frame in crimson and blue, we’d better make sure we can get it with rhinestones on it, or something along those lines. We want to make sure we’re catering to every single fan.”

In 2011, Jennifer Richards decided to turn her passion for handmade items — making, buying and selling them — into a business. She had no idea it would receive the reception it has from the community: Made has been voted Best of Lawrence 2013’s best new business. “I hoped people would like the store when I opened it,” says Richards, who operates the shop with her husband, Matt. “I really have been overwhelmed by the response.” She shouldn’t be too surprised. The Richardses put a lot of thought and time into carrying a wide array of interesting handmade gifts from across the country, constantly tweaking the design of the store to give customers a fresh experience every time they visit.

The Richardses say customers seem to enjoy purchasing items made by real Americans with real stories: the local guy who operates a candle business at night in the hopes it can become his day job, the husband and wife from Tennessee who design minimalist movie posters, the San Francisco woman who left a career in finance to craft greeting cards. In all, Made sells the works of about 150 artists, with roughly a fifth of them local. “Lawrence is a great place to find a lot of talented people,” Richards said.

The merchandise at Wild Man Vintage might be older, but it doesn’t sit on the shelves for long. Owner Phil Chiles says he spends a lot of time searching for and buying clothes for the Massachusetts Street store. “We’re always looking for stuff and trying to figure out what our customers are wanting and bringing more of it,” Chiles said. Chiles says the store has three main groups of customers: people looking for daily street wear, people with themed parties who are looking for specific pieces and collectors of vintage clothing. That’s why Chiles keeps a wide range of merchandise at Wild Man. The store carries everything from belt buckles and sunglasses to formal dresses. Most of the clothing dates from 1960 to 1980, but there is also stuff from the ’90s.

“There’s an idea that vintage is crazy loud polyester stuff … in reality it’s just stuff you didn’t see the first time around,” Chiles said. Part of what keeps Wildman Vintage stocked with different merchandise is that Chiles is one of the most aggressive buyers of vintage clothing in Kansas. He also works on collecting items that tend to be in high demand. During winter when other resale stores were sold out of Christmas sweaters, Wildman stayed fully stocked; Wild Man had been collecting the holiday sweaters since July to prepare for the uglysweater party season. “We’re pretty responsive to what people want,” Chiles said. —Meagan Thomas mthomas@ljworld.com

Speaking in hushed tones in the back corner of the Dusty Bookshelf bookstore, Shannon Jones says she can’t take too much credit for the shop’s reputation. “We are great because our customers are great,” said Jones, the store’s manager. Nearly all the books sold at the Dusty Bookshelf are used. That means the shop depends on what its customers bring in through the door. And they rarely disappoint, Jones said. The shop, which opened in 1996, usually has about 60,000 titles to offer, she said, and they change every day. That’s part of the charm for customers: You never know what gem might have turned up since yesterday. “We put new stuff out every single day,”

Jones said, “and that kind of helps with the treasure-hunt feel. You just never know what you’re going to find in here.” One thing you might find is a cat named Alice, who’s lived in the store now for 14 years — “longer than any of us,” Jones says. If you don’t find a book you’re looking for, the store will notify you when it finds its way in the door. And if you help out by bringing in some old books of your own, you might be able to walk out with some new treasures. “No cash has to exchange hands, really,” Jones said. “You can bring in a bag of books and leave with a bag of books.” —Matt Erickson merickson@ljworld.com

La Prima Tazza does coffee right: with hot (and cold) brews and beans in bulk. “We’re the first coffee shop in Lawrence, opening in 1990,” Sarah Richardson, manager of La Prima Tazza, said. “When you’re open that long, you have time to get it right.” The shop is small, so seating is sparing, but it’s bustling with a variety of colorful coffee drinkers, from hard-studying students to moms reading with their kids. The décor is just as cozy, with dark

wood, gentle lighting and a black and white tiled floor, evoking a European cafe vibe. Richardson said La Prima Tazza’s most-complimented coffee is its espresso. “People from Italy and France, who are used to really fine espresso, like it a lot,” Richardson said. The shop’s generic Styrofoam to-go cups, well-loved for-here mugs and the sign offering 20 percent off for using a personal tumbler reinforce that what matters is a delicious cup of coffee. If the best burger contest were a Chinese empire, the Burger Stand would be approaching dynasty-dom. Readers have voted it Lawrence’s best burger for the third straight year, and Zagat recently put it on its nationwide “Best Burgers in 25 Cities” list. “We feel even more love now than ever before,” general manager Chris Hoffman said. “The town isn’t bored of us yet, and hopefully they never will be.” Is it really just the burgers? Or is it all the fun stuff on the side? There are burgers topped with habañero-cactus jam, truffle butter, local micro-greens, Granny Smith apple chutney and all kinds of cheese. (What’s on the daily special is anyone’s guess.) There’s a self-serve firing line of house-made sauces. Guajillo chili dip? Roasted garlic parmesan aioli? Chipotle

cocoa ketchup? Marshmallow dip? Have as much as you want. And you don’t just order fries, you pick from more than a half-dozen kinds. Among them are sweet potato (hence the marshmallow dip), smoked tofu, duck fat and poutine — doused in salt, pepper and gooey brown gravy. “There are some other awesome places to get a burger here in town, but every day we are trying to separate ourselves from the rest of the herd,” Hoffman said, citing points of pride including good service, the vintage building’s hip atmosphere, activities like video game and karaoke nights, and offerings good for everyone from families to late-night snackers. “We try to be all of that without losing who we truly are at the core. A glance inside WheatFields Bakery Cafe’s glass display case, full of colorful tarts, cheesecakes and truffles, reveals why WheatFields was voted both Lawrence’s best bakery and best place for dessert. General manager Amy Savoie said the desserts are all homemade daily and there’s something in the restaurant to satisfy any sweet tooth. However, it’s delicacies like the chocolate mousse cake that really highlight the restaurant’s dessert superiority. “You don’t find this everywhere,” Savoie said of the chocolate mousse cake, which consists of a thin layer of cake, glazed with a raspberry spread, covered with 2 inches of chocolate mousse and finished off with chocolate pirouettes. It somehow manages to taste rich and light at the same time. The mousse dissolves on the tongue, leaving the texture of the cake and the remaining chocolate. But it’s not just sweets that make WheatFields stand out. Its 25-ton brick wood-fire oven, which produces its signature artisan-style breads and other baked goods, is based on a style from Spain and was built from the ground up inside WheatFields. It gives WheatFields bread its distinct crunchy crust. “There’s probably only a dozen or so in the country,” Savoie said.

Those different styles of bread have made WheatFields popular across the state. Savoie said a grocery store and a restaurant in Manhattan both buy bread from WheatFields, as do two places in Topeka. She said visitors come from around the state to eat at WheatFields. “That’s always a good feeling,” Savoie said. “People from Wichita have asked us when we’re going to open a WheatFields there.” Locally, WheatFields bread is available at Hy-Vee, The Merc and Dillons stores. KU Dining Services contracted with WheatFields last year to sell bread on campus. But going to WheatFields itself for its bread, cakes and pastries has its advantages. It’s a nice starting point for a downtown stroll, something you may want to try after devouring the bakery’s products.

If you’re looking for ice cream flavors like “Rock Chalk Jayhawk” and “Peanut Butter Freak” served in handmade waffle cones, Sylas and Maddy’s Homemade Ice Cream has been the place to go since 1997. Customers crowd the ice cream shop. Workers grab a sinful snack on break. College students come for a cheap Tuesday night date. “There’s certain flavors, I don’t know what it is about it, but they taste better in a waffle cone,” says Sarah English, who manages the store. English believes the store’s authenticity is the secret to its success. English and her employees make the ice

cream fresh on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays with ample amounts of cream and sugar. English said another selling point is the nostalgia Sylas and Maddy’s provides for many people. She said customers often come in to relive memories, from first dates to celebrations. “We’ve had kids that have gone to school here, and now they bring their kids back,” she said. “That’s how we make it. The Lawrence sub shop has been open in various locations since the late ’70s and remains a local staple while competing with large national chains such as Jimmy John’s, Subway and Quiznos. Co-owner Donny Keen said that two things keep the joint going: thick homemade sandwiches and quirk. “We slice our stuff and still use real meat. Not any turkey-based products,” he says. “As far as health goes, it might not be the healthiest, but it’s real food.” For those wanting something a tad healthier than the best-selling Yello Sub — four kinds of meat, Swiss cheese and all the fixings — the restaurant has a robust veggie menu featuring 14 different sandwiches. Keen describes Yello Sub as a laid-back

Lawrence joint, not some corporate place with clean white walls. Indeed, most of the inside of the restaurant is painted to resemble a cartoonish ocean scene, playing off the Beatles’ “Yellow Submarine,” from which the restaurant derives its name. Huge tropical fish watch hungry diners in an aquarium built into the wall. Customers hold playing cards while waiting on their sandwiches to be completed. When your card is called, the order is done, and a hefty homemade sandwich is ready to be devoured. “You spend a little more money here, but what ends up between the buns, there is something there,” Keen says. “If you’re a starving student and need a filler, there you are.”

In this town, maybe it is appropriate that the winner in the Best of Lawrence Mexican restaurant category is an eatery named after a popular Mexican liquor. Narrowing down your choices in Lawrence’s crowded Mexican food market can cause a diner to work up a thirst. El Mezcal — the name comes from a distilled agave-based liquor — is a longtime mainstay of the Lawrence restaurant scene.

It started out with a single location in the 1990s at 1819 W. 23rd St. Now the El Mezcal name is on restaurants throughout the area. But the West 23rd Street location remains the embodiment of the festive and colorful philosophy of the company. Piñatas, colorful artwork and salsa music give the location its feel. BeST Barbeque Bigg's Barbeque 2429 Iowa St. • 785-856-2550 Barbecue is supposed to be spicy. No, it’s supposed to be sweet. Barbecue is supposed to be pork. No, it’s supposed to be beef. Anybody who has watched those ampedup barbecue reality shows (yes, we really wrote that phrase) knows how the rest of the argument goes, and how it ends. (Usually, it ends with a turkey leg being used as a club, or maybe that is just what we are rooting for.) Well, Doug Holiday, owner of Bigg’s Barbecue, at 2429 Iowa St., has a different idea about what barbecue is supposed to be: fun. That’s why you’ll find items like chocolate-covered bacon on his menu, and once there was even something called barbecued sushi rolls. But no, barbecued sushi rolls are probably not the reason Bigg’s was voted best barbecue in town in Best of Lawrence 2013.

“I would hope that it is just working hard at it every day and taking care of our customers,” says Holiday, who founded the restaurant in 2004. And taking it slow. Both the pulled pork and brisket that are mainstays of his menu take about 14 hours to cook. “I can tell you that nothing is done in a hurry in the barbecue business,” Holiday said. Maybe that is why it is tough for him to single out just one item from his Bigg’s menu as a speciality. But he said if he were forced to, he would say the restaurant’s baby back ribs are his favorite. But that’s only if he is forced to choose — like if someone is holding a turkey leg to his head.

Among Lawrence’s fast food options, many favor Chipotle Mexican Grill for the wide variety of options available in one familiar, easy-to-eat form. Chipotle made its name on its burritos and the hefty bang for your buck promised by a quick meal that weighs in at about a pound and a half for $6.25. Chipotle is a simple, no-frills operation with stainless steel furnishings lending the restaurant an industrial feel and a simple menu smoothing the way for a line of customers. But the menu’s basic array of burritos, burrito bowls, tacos and salads allows for thousands of possibilities as the customer has three types of tortillas to choose from — soft corn, soft flour and crispy corn shells; four meats, including barbacoa and carnitas;

specialty toppings such as roasted chili-corn salsa and tomatillo-green chili salsa; and of course the basics: guacamole, sour cream, cheese and lettuce. The formula of hot, spicy Mexican food prepared quickly and delivered in large portions has always done well in towns — like Lawrence — with a young population, says Chris Arnold, a Chipotle spokesman. “We do very well in college towns,” Arnold said. “In fact, our first restaurant was adjacent to the University of Denver campus. That’s at least part of the reason why Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches is a favorite delivery chain in Lawrence. But just how fast is freaky fast? “Under 30 seconds,” says Dylan Anderson, a store manager at the Jimmy John’s Massachussetts Street location, of the time it takes to make any one of their sub sandwiches.

The delivery doesn’t take much longer. But the sandwich shop also grows crowded at certain hours of the day, especially around 2 a.m., when bars close and partygoers need sustanance before calling it a night. On the walls, tongue-in-cheek signs, including one that warns, “Hippies use side door,” distract patrons from their growling bellies. “A lot of people say they like our music, too,” Anderson says. “We play the classic rock station, or sometimes ’80s new wave. It’s

just a fun place to go to.” Along with the standard cold cuts and toppings, the sandwich shop offers low-carb lettuce wraps and vegetarian options. And for those who like a cookie with their meal, Jimmy John’s has recently added white chocolate, dark chocolate and milk chocolate to their chocolate chip cookie varieties. Zen Zero owner Subarna Bhattachan says his restaurant aims to serve all customers, no matter their income level — or preference for meat. After opening La Parilla in 2008, Bhattachan learned that Lawrence had a lot of vegetarians. So when he started Zen Zero four years later, he incorporated several meatless dishes into its menu. Vegetarianism is actually built into Asian cuisine, Bhattachan noted. The East is a traditionally poor culture where, unlike in the West, people generally can’t afford meat. So they get used to cooking without it. “When I grew up in Asia, we didn’t eat bacon or steaks; we didn’t eat meat on a daily basis,” Bhattachan said.

Bhattachan said it doesn’t matter how many vegetarian options there are on the menu if the food doesn’t taste good. His restaurant has worked to perfect the “flavor balance” in Thai cuisine, between sweet and sour, spicy and mild. Among the most popular vegetarian dishes at Zen Zero are the mixed vegetable stir fry, Thai basil tofu and sauteed soy chum. The restaurant also uses locally produced tofu. The type of food Zen Zero serves is thus what Bhattachan says Americans are trending toward: nutritious, vegetarian, and locally grown. This little blue laminated card boasts no fewer than 36 martini choices, available at Ten, the historic downtown hotel’s restaurant, and the Jayhawker, the hotel bar. The list also features the KU student-favorite Jayhawker Juice, made with pineapple-infused vodka, as well as less sweet/more serious martinis, such as a classic Gibson with gin and cocktail onions. The Eldridge pours signature cocktails, too, with drinks like the Pamplemousse Spritz (sauvignon blanc, ruby grapefruit, local honey, orange liqueur, fresh-squeezed lemon and soda) and the Springthyme

G&T (muddled thyme and cucumber with gin, local honey, lemon and tonic) gracing the springtime menu. “The Jayhawker bar and Ten restaurant have a long-standing tradition of serving consistently delicious classic cocktails, such as old fashioneds, mojitos and Manhattans,” restaurant and bar manager Diana Garcia said. “We also have one of the best bloody mary recipes in town.” There’s another not-to-be-overlooked point that makes the Eldridge worthy of Best Cocktails in Lawrence status — the hotel has great specials. Even after more than a century in operation as everything from an opera house to a movie theater to an occasional church, Liberty Hall’s popularity as an event venue continues to grow. It’s already put on more concerts in the first half of 2013 than it had all last year. But Liberty Hall isn’t just for concerts. The venue is also used for graduation and birthday parties, charity events and even some weddings. “It’s come to be sort of this community center,” event manager Dean Edington said. The heavy concert seasons for the hall are from September to November and February through May. And the summer is usually full of weddings. Edington said there’s rarely a single week without at least two events. With

that kind of busy schedule, booking the hall usually takes several months’ notice. Liberty Hall holds about 1,000 people. The seasoned staff make concerts run smoothly, and the technical specifications like stage size and lighting options make live shows better. The history of the building and the older architecture are what make the building unique from other venues in downtown Lawrence. People can go to watch a show and have a memory of a friend’s wedding or a first date at the cinema. “The building has its own personality regardless of what’s happening; it has its own presence,” Edington said. “This place is kind of alive.” — by Meagan Thomas mthomas@ljworld.com

Aisha Kitt, 23, goes to the Sandbar four or fives times a week because she loves the “homey” feel the small bar gives. “The bartenders are really kind and generous to customers ... there aren’t any bad times there,” she said. The Sandbar is a tropical oasis that serves fruity drinks with toy accessories, features dancing mermaids and plays a jukebox highlighted by Jimmy Buffett tracks, among other music from the past several decades. “It’s just a fun environment; it always feels like there’s a party going on,” customer Berenice Weisel said. Every night at 10 p.m. the infamous indoor hurricane, complete with wind and rain, hits Lawrence. If it’s your birthday or you’re out

celebrating for a bachelorette party, there’s a good chance you’ll get to put on a mermaid apron and dance on the bar. Miss the 10 p.m. show? For $20, you can buy another indoor hurricane at whatever time of night you want. “I really like the fact that you can dance on pretty much anything – the bars, the seats by the wall,” Kitt said. Drink specials every night keep the bar busy, especially on Thursday nights, when there are $2.50 tropical drinks like the Pink Flamingo, a pink lemonade and vodka drink that comes with a flamingo toy, and the Shark Attack, a cherry limeade drink that comes with a toy shark filled with cherry-flavored juice. There are bars where you could be a regular and never get to know your bartender. That’s probably not the case at Sandbar, where — if you’ve been in the place at any point in the past 18 years or so — there’s a good chance the guy making your drinks was David Johanning. At 6-foot-10 (Johanning played center on the KU basketball team from 1990 to 1992), not only would he have cut a memorable figure, he was probably putting on a show — complete with “Jaws” theme music — while pouring your Shark Attack and, in general, having a great time. Especially at a small, themed bar like Sandbar, Johanning said, “you’re not just serving drinks, you’re part of the experience.” Johanning became a managing

partner for Sandbar about six years ago and now handles business tasks during the day while continuing to tend bar three or more nights a week. He and other Sandbar-tenders have regularly been among top votegetters in Best of Lawrence and University Daily Kansan Top of the Hill contests. It’s all about interacting with the customers and having a good time, said Johanning, who added that the energy from a constant influx of new people turning 21 in this college town was one of the best things about his job. “You’re on stage,” he said. “Everyone’s looking for you to have fun, and if you’re having fun people will have fun, too.”

Former Kansas University guard Tyrel Reed was in grade school when his father, Stacy, drove him to see Allen Fieldhouse for the first time. “I came and watched Paul Pierce play. I sat right up there under the rafters,” Reed said, pointing toward the windows in the 58-year old fieldhouse. “The greatest thing I ever remember as a little kid.” The fieldhouse hasn’t lost its charm since. Reed was so impressed by his first visit that it later played a part in his college choice. After committing to KU out of Burlington High School, he played four years for the Jayhawks and left as the winningest player in KU history, with a record of 132-17. “I fell in love with the place,” Reed said,

“and obviously, I came here and played and am still in love with it.” The Fieldhouse draws rave reviews from locals and outsiders alike because it gives fans a taste of history (banners hanging from the rafters, hard-bench seating, no luxury boxes) with a few modern amenities sprinkled in (updated sound system, 18x10-foot highdefinition video boards above half-court). “I’ve played all around the country, and there’s nothing better,” Reed said. “I love how it hasn’t changed much over the years. Mariscos Restaurant server William Taylor says he values good service and he tries to provide that in his work. His customers in Lawrence have noticed. Taylor has worked at Mariscos for five years. He began as a host while he was still in high school and eventually was able to convince the owner to let him serve. He caught on quickly and has been serving for three years. “Understanding your

customers and building a relationship with them, knowing your product well, being able to sell it, stand by it and believe in it, and being personable are all important,” Taylor said. Taylor is a student, so he doesn’t serve full-time. But he works about five evenings shifts a week, giving his regular customers plenty of time to catch him. The menu at this chic downtown restaurant changes often to incorporate seasonal ingredients and trending foods (ramps, anyone?). For every new iteration, dishes are creatively envisioned, masterfully executed and, ultimately, placed on the table looking like works of art. Under the umbrella of what Pachamama’s calls “New American Market Cuisine” you’ll find offerings along the lines of springtime

citrus ramp-crusted scallops (served with Wakarusa mushroom crepes, beet relish and nettle cream) or the confit pork cheeks appetizer (with creamy grits, spring greens and peppered strawberry rhubarb compote). Pachamama’s version of “American” doesn’t forego comfort food, though — the rich and melty 8th Street Mac ‘n’ Cheese and a lineup of juicy burgers are staples. Chef and owner Ken Baker summarizes his approach on Pachamama’s online profile: “Taking the best ingredients, local and organic whenever possible, and matching

There are plenty of dinner spots on Massachusetts Street to choose for a first date, but locals say 715 Restaurant is the best. Maybe it’s the dim lighting and the candlelit tables or the well-stocked bar, with a variety of Italian and French wines, from the red Alma de los Andes to the white Stoneleigh Suav Blanc. At 715, staff say they are most proud of the locally sourced handmade dishes served up from chef Michael Beard. Watching Beard and his kitchen staff work in 715’s open kitchen might give you and your date something else to make small talk about while you wait for your prosciutto crostini,

an appetizer of San Daniele prosciutto cheese sliced paper thin — and they mean paper thin — over a grilled baguette. The portions at 715 are often not as large as at other restaurants, so you’ll probably have room for the main course, which you’ll want if you ordered something as rich as the rabbit ravioli, a “rare hare rabbit confit,” with parsnip and goat cheese pureea and herbed olive oil. Who knows? If things go well, you might come back for brunch and try the quiche of the day. But if your date is on a weekend evening, you’d be well advised to call ahead and

Rod Barnes says he tries to care for his patients the way he would a member of his family. And a few years ago, when he needed some care of his own, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just what they did for him. Since Barnes took off two years as a physician at Lawrence Family Medicine and Obstetrics while battling leukemia, heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been touched by how many of his patients, and others around Lawrence, have reached out to him, he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just like having an extended family,â&#x20AC;? Barnes says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t even begin to recite all the kind words and the support Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve received.â&#x20AC;? After receiving a bone marrow transplant, Barnes is well now, he says. He returned to work in January 2012. Though his clinic has changed names and forms a few times, heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s worked there since 1978. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s delivered more than 3,000 babies during that time, which he notes is more

people than his hometown of Council Grove has. Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a reason his patients feel close to him, says nurse Joni Lawrence, who has worked with Barnes for 33 years. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a great listener, she said, and his friendly demeanor shows how much he cares. â&#x20AC;&#x153;He will make you feel like you are the only person in the world he has to take care of,â&#x20AC;? Lawrence said. Those patients come back often enough that he says his schedule is full every day, even though his weakened immune system means he no longer delivers babies or sees patients who are too sick. When Richard Haig first started working at Westside 66 in 1985, he says there were 19 full-service filling stations in Lawrence. Today, his is the only one left. But Haig, who now owns the station, says there still is a demand for a place where attendants will fill up your tank, check your oil and tires, and even provide trained mechanics to fix almost anything wrong with your vehicle, right there on the spot. “We’ll go the extra mile to help them if they’re stranded at the grocery store,” he said. “We still run quick service calls. We have a

lot of older people who forget their lights and things like that. That means a lot to them.” Haig said it hasn’t always been easy to keep up with all the technological changes in auto repair, as the old carburettor engine was replaced by computerized fuel injection systems and, now, by hybrid gas and electric vehicles. But he says the station still offers fairly extensive maintenance and repair service. “We draw the line at engine replacements and transmission replacements,” he said. — Peter Hancock phancock@ljworld.com

BeST Barber Amyx Barber Shop 842-1/2 Massachusetts St. • 785-842-9425 For many longtime Amyx Barber Shop customers, the downtown Lawrence landmark is as much a town square as it is a place to get their hair cut, says Mike Amyx, the shop’s thirdgeneration proprietor. In his shop, the past meets the present and conversation runs around the clock across any topic that comes to mind, from sports to politics. The building has been a working barber shop since at least 1908, says Amyx, who also is a Lawrence city commissioner and former mayor. He took over the family business from his father and grandfather, as anyone can see from the old-fashioned barber pole out front and antique interior. But the store isn’t as old-fashioned as it looks. “We’ve got a really good mix of all ages,” Amyx says of his staff and clientele. Young barbers keep the store hip, Amyx says, cutting the latest hairstyles or simple crew cuts, as needed, for a mixed crowd that includes old-

timers and college kids discovering the shop anew each year. Over all those years, Amyx’s family has accumulated an impressive array of Kansas University sports memorabilia, which customers can peruse while in the shop. The jewel of the collection? A postcard from Kansas basketball coach Forrest “Phog” Allen, sent to Amyx’s father from Helsinki in 1952 while the KU legend accompanied several Kansas players to that year’s Olympic team. Sixty years later, the shop is still full of KU fans and accumulating local history. “It’s a fun thing,” Amyx says. “But it’s also a privilege because we’ve had a lot of people who have stuck with us over the years.” Americans, in other words, are catching up with Zen Zero.

For a profession known for being stuffy, Lawrence attorney David J. Brown bucks the trend, at least from a fashion standpoint. To some degree. Sitting in his colorfully decorated office recently inside the historic English Lutheran Church, at 1040 New Hampshire St., Brown wears the conservative attire of a typical lawyer: dress shirt, slacks and tie. But look south, and you’ll see his trademark cowboy boots. Inside

those boots reside a colorful pair of socks, his trademark. Add in a braided pony tail, and you get a look that once landed him as a subject in the LJWorld’s ‘Style Scout’ series. “I just like crazy socks,” said Brown, a New York native who’s practiced law in Lawrence since 1992. Though he started out as a criminal defense attorney in Lawrence, Brown focuses most of his time now in family matters,

drawing up wills and handling custody cases. The competition was tough in the balloting for the best home handyman in Lawrence. One of the most frequent nominees in the category was “My Husband,” who actually finished in third place. Unfortunately, there is no telephone listing in Lawrence under the name “Husband, My.” But it didn’t really matter, because Pat Shea, owner of Shea Handyman Services, was the hands-down winner. “I just enjoy working with

people,” said Shea, who runs his business from a telephone and a pickup truck. “I like being there when I’ve been asked to be there.” When Shea started the business in 2009, he was prepared to do almost almost any kind of minor home repair — “drippy faucets, running toilets, sticky doors, cabinets that won’t close right, that sort of thing.” Since then, though, he’s gone out to perform tasks he never imagined anyone would need, like

the time someone called to have him empty a mouse trap. Still, he responded and dutifully disposed of the dead rodent. But those kinds of requests are unusual, he said. He said that goal is reflected in his clinic’s emphasis on education and prevention, making sure that patients know what’s going on with their teeth and gums so that there’s no need for any trips to the dentist for anything but a routine checkup. Heinbach, who has worked in Lawrence for 10 years, said he and the

other dentists who work out of the clinic also work hard to get to know each of their 4,000 or so patients, starting each with an hour-plus introductory session. “They’re thorough, and they genuinely care about their patients,” said Kim Shufflebarger, Heinbach’s assistant. And, funnily enough, Heinbach had similar things to say about his staff, whom he credited for much of the clinic’s strength. “They care about patients,” Heinbach said. “They care about each other. Knowing how to take a good picture of a home is an important part of being able to market a property, he said. But the bigger factor, Harper said, is that he makes it a point to sell what he loves. And Harper loves old homes. Nearly every Sunday from noon to 1 p.m. and some Saturdays from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m., you can find what has become known as the Honk for Hemp guy at a downtown street corner. Honk your horn in support of the legalization of marijuana, and the guy will flash you a handheld sign showing an upturned thumb. Kirk McClure, president of the Old West Lawrence Association, says he knows why his neighborhood was voted the best in town: It has some of the most beautiful, iconic homes in the area, is walkable because of its close proximity to downtown and features the best-looking trees in Lawrence. The town’s elite traditionally resided in the neighborhood, making it a target for Confederate leader William Quantrill in his 1863 raid; his soldiers destroyed many of its homes. A house at Seventh and Tennessee was once a hotel that served as an oasis on the Santa Fe Trail (“When you left

that hotel, you didn’t hit civilization for a very long time,” McClure said). A building at Eighth and Ohio used to be the city hospital. Residents have periodically feuded with city officials over business expansion. “I’m one of those who firmly believes that a city is only as healthy as its neighborhoods,” McClure, a professor of urban planning at Kansas University said. “Too often our leaders kowtow to development.” Every summer, Old West Lawrence residents have a block party, and garage and art sale. Neighborhood association meetings are well-attended. St. Patrick's day Parade 2 Relay for Life 3 Festival of Trees

Everyone loves a parade. In Lawrence, especially, they love a parade with hula hoopers, parade floats of giant volcanoes and riverboats full of dancing pirates, and unusual characters such as a woman in a chicken suit and McGruff the Crime Dog, with music from local band Junkyard Jazz. Oh, and since it’s St. Patrick’s Day, throw in some bagpipers and a leprechaun with a 10-foot pot of gold. Lawrence does St. Patrick’s Day the Lawrence way. The city has hosted a St. Patrick’s Day parade since 1988, when a small group of people of Irish heritage

concocted the plan over a few pints in local pub, according to the current parade committee. Since then, organizers have raised more than $700,000 for local children’s charities, partly through other fundraising events such as the 5K Shamrock Shuffle. The parade committee gave $15,000 checks this year to The County Fair Swim Club, Ballard Community Services and The Lawrence Arts Center. — Ian Cummings icummings@ljworld.com

From 2011 to 2012, the Lawrence Humane Society increased the rate at which it places animals from 49 percent to 85 percent. Executive Director Dori Villalon thinks the shelter can do better still. Walk into the shelter, and you’ll see why it’s so highly regarded. It’s clean, gives animals double the normal cage space and has a doctor vaccinating and fixing furry creatures full time. Villalon says the organization has been so successful because she runs it like a for-profit company, utilizing tools like metrics, strategic planning and state-of-the-art software. “It’s great that we all love animals,” she said, “but you’ve got to take that compassion and put your business hat on.” The shelter has been effective largely because of community support. The Humane

Society has 320 volunteers, works with 100 foster homes and relies on donations for nearly three-quarters of its budget. Villalon said the shelter works with owners to find their ideal pet, not put them through an extensive character review; as she says, she isn’t going to interview your grandmother. “We like to make relationships and trust people,” said Operations Director Katy Hollingsworth. If you don’t want a new pet, you can always stop by and visit. Check out Catopia, a room in the shelter where the felines roam free. It’s another example that the Lawrence Humane Society does things differently. And the community is noticing. — Giles Bruce gbruce@ljworld.com

If you’re looking for a day’s worth, or even a couple hours, of activities for the whole family this summer, there’s no better place in the Lawrence area than Clinton State Park. The nearly 600,000 visitors each year to the 1,500-acre park four miles west of town are a testament to its popularity. “With the close proximity to the city, it makes a nice getaway for a few hours,” says acting park manager Dale

Schwieger. “There’s a whole host of activities people can do when they’re down here.” Those include hiking or biking 23 miles of trails, camping at one of the more than 500 primitive or utility campsites, fishing on Clinton Lake, disc golf (the course is being revamped this fall), renting boats from the Clinton Lake Marina, staying in the Camp Creek or Chicken Creek cabins, birdwatching or archery. Printed across the bottom of a notepad on Mary Klayder’s desk are three words: “It’ll be fine.” And that’s what she tells her students when they come sit on the wicker chair in her office and she spins her seat around to talk with them. Klayder, a University Honors Lecturer and associate director in the English department at Kansas University, teaches English courses and leads study-abroad programs for students in KU’s Honors Program. So her students are often strivers with eyes trained on their career goals, and Klayder considers it her mission to help them slow down and think about the world around them, and themselves, from time to time. “They sometimes get so caught up in this path of what they’re supposed to do,” said Klayder, who has taught at KU since coming in 1985 as a graduate student, after leaving her job as a high school English teacher. She selects books with weighty ideas for her students to read, and during class she prods them to have tough conversations. After students return

from her study-abroad trips to Costa Rica or the United Kingdom (Klayder will embark on her 33rd such trip this summer), she has them reflect on their experiences. “They’re going to explore another country, but they’re also exploring themselves,” said Klayder, who in 2009 won KU’s annual Honor for an Outstanding Progressive Educator (HOPE) Award, given by students. She recalls a moment near the end of one Costa Rica trip, on a beach, when she approached one of her students, a bright young woman excelling as she worked to become a nurse. Klayder asked her what she was thinking as she reflected on the trip. The student replied: “I don’t want to be a nurse.” Now she’s studying psychology, Klayder says. Stan Herd was accosted on the street in Lawrence once by a friend who told him, “Herd, stay out of the damned paper!” His buddy will have to wait another issue. One of the cities’ most recognizable artists, Herd has for more than four decades been creating Earthworks, in which he plants, plows and mows images in crops, much of the time in Kansas. He’s also involved in film production, and his 21-year-old son, Evan, plays in a band. It’s all part of Herd’s mission to make Lawrence a destination for creative people the world over. “My ideal situation is to have all of this interconnectivity between film, art and music, and Lawrence is probably the best place on the planet for that,” Herd said. “It’s a great opportunity for people to create, whether you’re a poet, sculptor, writer or painter.”

It’s the type of community — socially progressive, with lots of culture and intellectual activity — Herd was looking for when he and his then-wife moved here nearly a quarter-century ago. The artist has recently been helping turn East Lawrence into a hub of creativity, creating an outdoor events space (“Gateway”) outside the Cider Gallery, at 810 Pennsylvania St., in the new Lawrence Warehouse Arts District. All of these years later, Herd says the art scene in Lawrence is as vibrant as ever. “The ‘prairie renaissance’ is what I call it,” he said. “There’s a lot of creative energy in the state. People are intent on staying here instead of going to the coasts. People are moving back from the coasts to Lawrence, Kan.” — Giles Bruce gbruce@ljworld.com

Recreation Center It has been Lawrence’s $25 million soap opera. City commissioners are moving ahead with a 181,000-square-foot mega-recreation center for northwest Lawrence, but not before discussion of the project has filled the message boards, editorial pages and coffee shops of the city. Perhaps the passion the issue has produced should come as no surprise. It has a lot of the elements of a good daytime drama. There’s the mighty and the powerful: Kansas University Athletics and the Kansas University Endowment Association are partners with the city on the project and the adjacent Rock Chalk Park complex. There’s the local businessman who is cheered by some and jeered by others: Lawrence developer Thomas Fritzel also is a partner. He’s been involved with successful projects like The Oread and The Eldridge hotels, but also has drawn criticism for his handling of the The Varsity House project near campus and for his involvement in a troubled land deal in Junction City. Then there are the twist and turns: The city

originally was going to award a no-bid contract to Fritzel to build the recreation center, but public outcry caused that portion of the deal to be changed — sort of. The millions of dollars worth of roads, parking lots and other infrastructure still are being awarded on a no-bid basis to Fritzel. But perhaps the biggest twist has been the city’s decision to not put the $25 million project up for a public vote. It is the largest project in recent memory to move forward without a citywide election. But a majority of commissioners defended that decision because the project is being funded by an existing sales tax, rather than a tax increase. That’s been the final piece of the drama: A city that has held to its guns. “We have stuck with that decision, and sticking to a decision even when there is controversy, is what leadership is all about,” Mayor Mike Dever said.

Michel Loomis, who retired in December after 32 years teaching English and gym at Liberty Memorial Central Middle School, and first-year teacher Jessica Sadler, who teaches third grade at Cordley School, tied for the honor in this year’s contest. “She’s kind of a legend here in town,” Liberty Memorial Principal Jeff Harkin said of Loomis. “Her kindness, and her kind persistence in reaching kids, is what impressed me most. She greeted kids at 7:30 in the morning when they came in for open gym. Start their day out very positively.” A gymnasium at Liberty Memorial is now named after Loomis in recognition of her

The first time his father, Jerry, took him to play a round of golf at Alvamar Country Club a few decades ago, it didn’t take young Eric Magnuson long to learn that golf blends sporting competition with a nature hike. “I saw a deer on No. 3 at the country club and I thought it was the most amazing thing in the world,” the younger Magnuson said. After working as a golf professional in western Kansas, southern California, Minnesota, Lawrence Country Club and in St. Joseph, Mo., Eric Magnuson has come home to Alvamar, where he now serves as head pro of the 36-hole facility that includes two full driving ranges and a short-game training facility. Other than zoysia fairways, the two golf courses on the property don’t have a great deal in common, so there is a little something for everybody. The championship course, open to the public, is noted for its long par-4 holes, and the greens tend not to break as much as the

eye suggests. The member course has tighter fairways and is dotted with dogleg holes, which in many cases take the driver out of the hands of big hitters. The greens tend to break more than a first read might indicate. “We have two great golf courses,” Magnuson said. “We need to pair that with great service.” Paul Hooser, an award-winning instructor and club-fitter who worked at Leawood South for 19 years, was hired by Alvamar to become lead instructor. Magnuson and two assistant professionals, Ryan Davis and Tyler Henderson, also are available to give lessons. “We’re able to offer anything and everything people want at a public or a private facility or even at a discount store,” Magnuson said about the club’s merchandising and club-fitting. “We’ll be the full-service, one-stop shop golf course in Lawrence and the surrounding areas.” —Tom Keegan tkeegan@ljworld.com

More recently she started Smart Fit, an after-school workout program aimed at keeping students active and healthy.
