The Command Post is located on the northeast corner of the Shawnee Town 1929 Town Hall parking lot next to the carnival, or approach anyone wearing a yellow Old Shawnee Days T-Shirt for assistance.

Fire station:

The fire station will be manned by the Shawnee Fire Department. The staff will be on hand to answer questions on fire prevention and the safety center. The fire station will also serve as a first aid station for anyone needing assistance.

A guide to Old Shawnee Days wristband prices will be $10 for ages 6 and younger and $20 for all other ages.

When and where:

This year’s Old Shawnee Days celebration will take place from Thursday, June 6, through Sunday, June 9. Most of the festivities will take place at Shawnee Town, a living history museum. The festivities will get started with a carnival and concerts from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Thursday and Friday. On Saturday, the fun will start at 10 a.m. with the 47th annual Old Shawnee Days Parade and continue until 10 p.m. On Sunday, hours will be 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

What it is:

Each year, thousands turn out to celebration Shawnee’s history and community spirit through four days of music, games, rides, contests, concession booths, historic re-enactments and more.

The headline act for this year’s celebration will be the nationally known rock band Blue Oyster Cult, which will perform on the main stage at Shawnee Town 1929 from 9 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. June 8. Three rock ’n’ roll tribute bands also are scheduled to appear on the main stage on June 7. They are Journeyman, the Eric Clapton Experience, which will perform at 7 p.m.; Landslide, a Tribute to Fleetwood Mac, 8:15 p.m.; and Satisfaction, a Rolling Stones Experience, 9:30 p.m. The slate of main stage concerts will kick off at 7:30 p.m. June 6 with a twohour show by The Crayons. It includes three founding members of another tribute band, Liverpool, A Tribute to The Beatles. More musical entertainment will be provided during the Friday through Sunday portion of the celebration on the Shawnee Town 1929 Bandstand, where area bands and youth groups will.

How it all got started:

In 1959, a group of local residents banded together as the Wagon Master’s Heritage Corp. to save a historic Shawnee building from the wrecking ball. Fundraising efforts for the restora-

tion project fell short, but the Wagon Master’s Heritage Corp. kept going. Its members stuck together and formed the Shawnee Historical Society, which was successful in saving another historic structure, a territorial jail building that was in the way of expansion by the Vita Craft Corp. Funds for the jail’s relocation to city-owned land that would become Old Shawnee Town (now Shawnee Town 1929) were raised through the creation of a “Sheriff’s Posse� of individuals who donated at least $100 apiece to the preservation effort. On July 13, 1966, the jail building was dedicated as part of a “Good Ol’ Summertime� celebration, which was renamed Old Shawnee Days the following year.

How to get there:

Shawnee Town 1929 is located three blocks west of Nieman Road on 57th Street and is accessible from all major thoroughfares. From Interstate 35, take the Johnson Drive exit and go west about one mile to Flint Street, then right one block and left on 57th Street. From I-435, take the Johnson Drive exit and head east about three miles to Cody Street, then left one block and right on 57th Street.

Friday, 8:15 p.m. to 9:10 p.m. A full-on tribute to one of the greatest classic rock bands ever, Fleetwood Mac, features mega talented musicians! Stephie Nix, Jillian MacVie, Bucky Lyndsingham, Chris Fleetwood, Frankie Mac, and The Voyer play some of the most popular songs of the ’70s and ’80s. Fleetwood Mac formed in 1967, and has remained to present day, a dominant commercial force. By 2000, Fleetwood Mac had sold more than 100 million copies of its albums — including 25 million for “Rumours� alone — making it one of the most popular rock bands in history.

Saturday, 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The highest praise one musician pays another is to refer to them as a “monster.� Monsters Ink is just that ... an amazing trio of monster players, all highly regarded A-list players, and all inductees of the Kansas Music Hall of Fame. The group is anchored by Dennis Laffoon on keyboards and vocals; Janet Jameson, rock/blues violinist and vocalist; and Rod Lincoln on drums. Their music is always an adventure, constantly on the edge, with an infectious energy that jumps off the stage to draw you into the fun. You never know what’s in store when the Monsters come out to play.

Blue Oyster Cult

Saturday, 9:15 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Blue Oyster Cult may be the ultimate “cult� band. Revered by punks, metal heads, sci-fi geeks and horror movie fans alike, Blue Oyster Cult have carved out a 40-year career via a string of complex hard rock albums and killer live shows. The author Steven King adores them and so does Dave Graney. Their best known track “Don’t Fear (The Reaper),� was a U.S. top twenty hit in 1976 and the album it came from, “Agents Of Fortune,� achieved platinum status, while their overall catalogue sales are in excess of 24 million. Most recently, Blue Oyster Cult have released The Complete Columbia Albums Collection, a 16 CD/1 DVD box set comprising all their studio albums from 1972 to 1988; three live albums; a rarities disc; and the appropriately named radio broadcast collection Radios Appear. The live albums, starting with 1975’s “On Your Feet or on Your Knees,� clearly demonstrates Blue Oyster Cult’s strength as a live act; they’re a bracingly powerful band, with the rock solid support of the rhythm-

bass-drums embellished by Buck Dharma’s stinging guitar leads.

National Taekwon-Do LLC

Sunday, 1 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. National Taekwon-Do LLC, formerly known as Kansas Taekwon-Do, has held classes at the Shawnee Civic Centre since 1992. Owner and Chief Instructor Suzan Crochet, seventhdegree black belt, runs three different Taekwon-Do programs at the Civic Center. The SuperKids program is for 4- to 6-year-olds. The Junior Taekwon-Do program is for students 6 to 10 years of age, and the Traditional program is for students 8 years and above.

Access Dance Inc.

Sunday, 2 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. Access Dance Inc. is a non-profit organization providing free dance lessons, dance attire and performance opportunities to children with special needs. Besides being fun, their program is designed to increase selfesteem, encourage self expression and explore creative movement through dance in a positive, safe and caring environment.

Swingin’ Singles

Friday, 6 p.m. to 6:45 p.m. Swing your partner (or just yourself) on over to the Shawnee Town Bandstand Friday night to enjoy a fun and lively performance from the The Swingin’ Singles square dance club. One of the largest clubs of its kind in Kansas and Missouri and dating back to 1966.

Outlaw Jim and the Whiskey Benders

Friday, 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Outlaw Jim and the Whiskey Benders are a hard-hittin’ Outlaw Country band with roots in the sounds of Waylon Jennings and Merle Haggard, as well as influences from New Orleans Funk and Southern Rock. They have traveled extensively in the Midwest and South, playing festivals, concerts and private events, as well as the beloved honky-tonks along the way. Playing a unique list of original songs and sing-along favorites, Outlaw Jim and the Whiskey Benders are being compared by many to the original outlaws, but with a flare all their own.

American Legion Band

Saturday, 11:30 a.m. to noon Shawnee Concert Band has been a fixture at Old Shawnee Days since the festival’s very first year. The band has a roster of around 95 musicians, all volunteers, who devote their time to the band for the enjoyment of their audiences. The band plays six to eight concerts each season, with Old Shawnee Days being their annual kickoff.

Academy of the Arts

Saturday, noon to 12:45 p.m. The Academy of the Arts offers a complete program for students of all ages. Since 1998, over 2,000 students have taken music, dance, or drama lessons at our different locations.

KC Dixieland Band

Saturday, 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. The KC Dixieland Band performs “Dixieland Sound� with big band style for the enjoyment of toetapping audiences at a variety of venues in the Kansas City area. The band began in the fall of 2008 with members coming from different backgrounds, including dentistry, psychiatry, architecture and more. All members share a common goal: to bring the enjoyment of Dixieland music to audiences of all ages.

Rock, Paper, Scissors

Saturday, 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Rock Paper Scissors is an acoustic, vocal trio based in Kansas City made up of veteran performers John Anderson, Janet Jameson and Dennis White — all lifelong lead vocalists and each with years of experience in some of the best bands in the Midwest. Formed in February 2007, the group performs pop, rock and R&B classics with a twist, including hits by Little Feat; Marvin Gaye; The Beatles; Smokey Robinson; Crosby, Stills and Nash; and a whole lot more!

In fact, it’s not all that long ago that the 22-year-old singer/guitarist first discovered the blues and

Sunday, noon to 1 p.m. Kid-rocker Jim Cosgrove has emerged as one of America’s leading family entertainers. He travels the country carrying a message that resonates with people young and old — hang on to the wonder of youth and love yourself, your neighbor and the earth. Embodying these themes in his own life, his authenticity adds to his appeal, and his music and concerts are universally well-received.

Prairie Acre

Sunday, 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. The Prairie Acre is working to bring old-time music to a new generation. Every time they start making their distinctively twangy sound, they’re doing their part to keep alive the pre-MP3, pre-CD, pre-LP era when the best way to enjoy good music was to play it with your friends and neighbors.

Yakety Sax Quartet

Sunday, 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. The Yakety Sax Quartet, organized by tenor sax player Vicki Fessler in early 2008, has performed for private parties, public events and retirement homes, mostly in the Johnson County area. The quartet plays pop, show tunes, classical, rock and jazz — from ragtime, Dixieland and swing to blues and fusion. Members are Jim Cochran, of Shawnee, lead alto and soprano sax; Robbin Draper, of Gardner, alto sax; Fessler, of Olathe; and Tom Nolte, of Olathe, baritone sax.

Parade Awards

Saturday, 5:55 p.m. The Band Stand The Old Shawnee Days Parade is one of the largest in the state of Kansas. Awards will be given in multiple categories, including Most Spirit,

Most Creative, Best Kids Entry, Most Unique Vehicle and Best Vehicle Group. The Parade Grand Marshal’s Award will be presented to the unit that best depicts the Parade theme, “There’s No Place Like Shawnee.� The Mayor’s Award will be presented to the best overall unit. This year there is also a special award category for Best Musical Unit.

Jim has traveled throughout the United States creating chain saw sculptures at fairs, festivals, competitions and wood carving shows. Beginning from a log, Jim creates a variety of animals and wildlife plus Indians, cowboys and caricatures. The sculptures vary in size from approximately 1 foot to life-size figures. Audiences attending the show will see forms begin to emerge from the logs within minutes. People can

3:15 p.m. The Old Shawnee Days Society and Cosentino’s Price Chopper is pleased to present the 2013 Old Shawnee Days Pie and Baking Contest! Bake your best pie or dessert and bring it to the main entrance to Town Hall beginning at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday. All entries must be accompanied by a completed registration form. These are available in advance at www.oldshawneedays.org or in person at City Hall, the Civic Centre or Shawnee Town Visitor’s Center. Registration forms can also be completed on the day when delivering your entry.

Divisions

Youth: 16 years old and under. All entries will be combined in this category. Fruit Pie Class: Double-crust only: celebrity, cherry, apple, berry (any), peach, other fruit and combination. Note: No refrigerated, custard, cream, meat or single-crust pies can be entered in the Fruit Pie Class.

Judging points will be awarded for the best filling, best tasting entry and most visually appealing entry. Contestants may enter as many divisions and as many times as they would like. There are no entry fees. Winners will be announced Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at the Town Hall Kids Area. Spending a day in Shawnee the Kansas Territory was opened for settlement, and two years later the area formerly known as Gum Springs was platted as Shawneetown, later shortened to Shawnee. It soon would find itself in the middle of Civil War border struggles. In 1862, Southern guerillas led by William Clarke Quantrill burned and looted Shawnee, just months before their infamous raid on Lawrence. A historic marker chronicling the Shawnee raid stands at Shawnee City Hall, 11110 Johnson Drive.

A good place to start:

Pioneer Crossing Park, Shawnee’s newest park, is located at Shawnee Mission Parkway and Melrose Street, just west of Interstate 35. The park features several historic markers detailing Shawnee’s 19th century status as an intersection of early military and territorial roads leading to the Santa Fe Trail. The park also features works by local artist Charles Goslin, including a wagon train recreated in a life-size three-dimensional brick wall mural and a limestone and bronze sculpture of local wagonmaster Dick Williams. At its peak, trail traffic through Shawnee included 600 wagons per week.

Why visit Shawnee:

Shawnee has a rich history and likes to show it off. One of the largest cities in Kansas, Shawnee covers 43 square miles that once contained pioneer settlements such as Monticello, where Wild Bill Hickok got his start in law enforcement. It also was home to Gum Springs, so named by the Shawnee tribe, which made that site its headquarters following an 1825 treaty that relocated certain eastern tribes to the Kansas Territory. In 1836 a saw and grist mill was built for the Shawnee on nearby Mill Creek, which today is bordered by a hiking and biking trail that runs from Olathe through Shawnee to Nelson Island in the Kansas River. Johnson County physician Dr. Bruce Hodges. Located at 6801 Hedge Lane Terrace, near the southwest corner of Shawnee Mission Parkway and Kansas Highway 7, it features Hodges’ collection of more than 4,500 artifacts from more than 20 countries. Among the more notable artifacts are an example of the fluoroscopes that allowed X-ray views of customers’ feet in U.S. shoe stores from the 1930s through 1950s; iron lungs used to treat polio; a shrunken head from the Jivaro Indians of Ecuador and Peru; and items from more than 20 Native American tribes. Admission is $5 per person, and hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays.

Things to do with the kids:

Shawnee’s reputation as a city teeming with kids’ activities was bolstered last year with the opening of the Sky Zone Indoor Trampoline Park at 6495 Quivira Road. Other popular children’s attractions include the Wonderscope Children’s Museum, 5700 King St., the Little Monkey Bizness indoor amusement center, 12219 Shawnee Mission Parkway; and the PowerPlay Family Entertainment Center, 13110 W. 62nd Terrace.

Top tourist attraction:

Shawnee Town 1929, 11501 W. 57th St., attracted more than 137,000 visitors

last year. The living history museum allows visitors to experience 1920s life on a typical truck farm and farm town. The many buildings are furnished with authentic artifacts from the period and are open for self-guided tours from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday from March through October.

The Johnson County Museum of History is located at 6305 Lackman Road. It includes documents, photographs and artifacts that bring the area’s pioneer and suburban history to life. Adjacent to the museum building, which is located in an old stone school house, is a nostalgic attraction of more recent vintage: the 1950s All-Electric House. The Extension Master Gardener program is a volunteer organization sponsored by Johnson County Kansas State University Research and Extension. Its mission is to provide research-based and sound horticulture information. They do this through a number of avenues. The Johnson County Extension Master Gardeners designed and maintain the gardens at Shawnee Town 1929. You will find them working the gardens on Friday mornings from April through October. They also staff the gardens to answer visitor’s questions at special events like Old Shawnee Days. Many visitors return to the gardens each year to see the changes and receive ideas for their own gardens. The Herb Garden was started in 1992 and has been expanded five times. It contains culinary, medicinal, strewing, international and everlasting herbs. Many of the plants are also host plants for butterflies, which adds to the gardens interest.
