simultaneously being mad scientist musicians.” In the official video for the single “Lauraine”, they let their nerdy sides lead the way for a creative and quirky visual backing up their upbeat sound. Audiences of the Midwest Zest Fest at Main Square Park in Highland, Indiana most recently got to take a musical trip with the band who drew them into a journey full of catchy riffs and an amped up stage presence. Marc Adrian was asked to describe the sound to someone who has never heard them. “I find it very challenging to describe our sound, being so close to it makes it hard to be objective. The feedback I’ve gotten seems to point to a theatrical kind of sound with a good dose of just good old rock music. Our influences are all over the place from video games and show tunes to bands like Queen, Weezer, They Might Be Giants, The Beatles, and Muse. We try to play the kind of music that appeals to musicians and to the average listener. I think what sets us apart is our ability to play music that appeals to musicians and still works for the average listener. We write some pretty pop sounding tunes, yet there is a lot more going on than what appears on the surface. You can dig into the lyrics or the composition of the songs and see that they’re actually well thought out and complicated in there own right.”
NWI Entertainer jumped at the chance to catch up with members of the band, Rocketboat. While the group joined forces in 2011, the four members are by no means new to “the region” scene. Collin Magdaz, Marc Adrian, Josh Hanchar, and Andrew Dumaresq make up the adventure rock quartet and draw on their inspirations of video games and science fiction to create an original and unique blend of punk and post-modern rock. The story behind how they met isn’t cut and dry. Josh and Marc are cousins where as Andrew and Marc met in middle school and have played together in many projects, most distinguishably the jam band Groovatron which had a freespirited cult following of music lovers. All of these guys are leaders in the local music community and teach at the Highland Guitar Studio of Highland, IN - where they met up with Collin.
Marc goes on to explain how they came up with the name. “The name doesn’t have any specific meaning. It came into being when we were writing a song and needed some chorus lyrics. We were being kind of goofy and singing variations on what later became Rocketboat. The name stuck, I think, because it wasn’t going to pigeon hole us into a genre. It’s fun and adventurous, spacey and yet old sounding.”
When asked for the definition an “adventure” rock band Josh Hanchar explains, “Adventure Rock is the type of music that takes you on an adventure. It’s always moving somewhere new, it’s somewhat fast-paced, full of surprises, has heartwarming moments and once it’s over, it makes you want to repeat the whole experience all over again.”
Aside from music Josh filled us in on other inspirations that are important to them. “Video games played a big role in our lives especially as kids, I’d say probably our favorite childhood classics are Super Mario Bros., Metroid, Zelda, and Contra. As far as sci-fi goes, Star Wars, Star Trek, The Matrix, and Back to the Future come to mind.”
A stroll through their website www.rocketboat.com displays a kitschy and fun set of original works. Their Youtube channel has some covers of unexpected songs such as music from the last level of Mega Man 2. Listening to their debut and self-titled album, Rocketboat shows that these musicians take having fun seriously! The art on the cover is really cool. “We got our initial inspiration by searching online through old video game box art. I don’t actually remember the exact game we chose, but its cover art helped influence the general composition and style of our album cover. We then wanted to include our character Olympia Gold, from the Rocketboat universe, on the cover as the focal point. She’s the prototypical boardroom-financed, exploited, pop superstar, yet she is deep and complex. I guess it’s kind of symbolic of the way we write music, by being our own rationally minded focus group and
Marc revealed some future plans of the band’s. “Right now we are writing songs and planning our next recordings and another music video. We have a bunch of material and should be recording sometime this fall and hopefully we’ll have a release ready for the spring. We’re planning on hitting some festivals for next summer and pushing our way to the next level.” On November 22, 2013 the band will be at the Abbey Pub in Chicago. Go to www.rocketboat.com and their Facebook page to see videos and jam sessions or to listen to their album.

STREETSMARTS Are you Thankful for anything?

WINO: Albert Callas SMELLS LIKE: a pond that somehow caught on fire. PERSONAL QUOTE: “Diarrhea is a real time-saver!”
Lana, a college student from Hammond, asks: Last year, I had a doctor knock me out with drugs and perform liposuction on me. Is it okay to be thankful for my new body?
Jolene, a business owner from Portage, asks: Should I be thankful that I own a successful nail salon in this economy, or should I be ashamed that I have to clip people’s toenails for a living?
Gina, a receptionist from Merrillville asks: I was on an internet date with this guy, and I blurted out accidentally that I was thankful I met him? Is that romantic or creepy?
WINO: “I’d like to see a doctor try and knock ME out with drugs! That’d be like trying to drown a carp!”
WINO: “Man, I didn’t clip my toenails for three years. You shoulda seen what happened to my last pair of shoes! My feet bust through the front of ‘em like a werewolf!”
WINO: “When I’m out on a date, I usually do a big shot of Jack Daniel’s and scream, “This whiskey is gonna go straight to my D**K!” like a sassy fat woman. That way there’s no surprises later.”

Did you ever wonder what it would be like to run for your life from say – ZOMBIES! We’ve seen it play out in movies like World War Z, but how would it play out in real life. I know what you’re thinking – ZOMBIES aren’t real – or are they? Well, if you’ve ever wanted to experience a mad dash away from zombies OR get a feel for what it would be like to be a zombie – well do I have the event for you!! It’s called the Running Dead and it’s a Halloween celebration of all things ZOMBIE!! It starts off with a 4.6K Zombie race that takes place at Wicker Park in Highland. This race is open to teams or individuals and features waves of “fun runs” and then a Ca$hDa$h. The “fun runs” will start on the hour at 1:00pm, 2:00pm and 3:00pm and include a mixture of obstacles, both man-made and undead, that will get your heart pounding and your legs moving. The obstacles will test your strength, speed and the cooperation between racers and their fellow hopeful survivors – so work as TEAM! The obstacles are designed to help runners escape the zombies’ clutches, so skipping an obstacle is not in your best favor!! Then at 4:00pm, you can test your limits with the Ca$hDa$h – same course, same zombies. Here’s the deal – this one is a timed event with prize money. The first place team or individual wins $500, second wins $300 and third gets $100. Now, if you are more interested in spreading the infection than running from it – guess what? You can sign up to be a zombie! You can choose to be a Chaser Zombie, which means you get to chase after runners who think they can get by you but you don’t let them by grabbing their flags OR you can choose to be a Stumbler Zombie, which means you pursue runners relentlessly by stumbling, crawling, and
just plain being slow in order to slow them down! When you choose to be a zombie, you undergo a full zombie transformation at the Zombie Transformation Center. Here, you will get worked on by a team of professional and insanely talented make-up artists to have your looking like a disgusting, hungry zombie. Now with your face looking the part, your clothes will have to as well. Come in your best custom, because these transformation artists will custom shred and bloody your clothes. Make sure you arrive one hour prior to your assigned zombie shift to get ready! When all the zombie racing is over, the fun really begins! The “My Zombie Prom 2013” gets started at 5:30pm and isn’t only for those participating in the race. The perk to being in the race is that you get to go to the prom for free – but if running isn’t your thing, you can still experience Zombie fun by coming out just for the prom. Mix and mingle the night away at the Single Mingle Tent. Dance music will be provided by DJ “JayBo”, and then National Recording Star “Liptak” will take the main stage. There will be a variety of vendors on hand – including different types of food and those selling a wide array of merchandise. Want to remember the night forever? Get your prom picture taken. And in true prom fashion, there will be a crowing of a King and a Queen (and Best Couple!)You can enter the contest for the chance to win a cash prize – $125 for best female and best male zombie and $250 for best couple zombie. A portion of all proceeds for this event will benefit the American Cancer Society, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital land the Wounded Warrior Foundation. Nine years ago, at the always popular Popcorn Fest, Sophie and Louie Kalafatis announced to the masses that they were bringing something fresh and new to Valpo. They bought what was once known as Goodfellas and turned it into Martinis. “Food has always been the priority for the owners, in fact Louie was the one who did all the cooking in the beginning,” said Steven Ippolito, Bar Manager and Event Coordinator at Martinis. “They went into business with the intention of food being their number one priority, and they were successful. A lot of unfamiliar people consider our bar as a prime cocktailing destination, but really we are kind of a best kept dining secret because our food quality is just that great and many do not realize that.”
that we are really trying to provide.” said Ippolito. Martinis we still be occasionally hosting larger events such as craft beer and wine dinners, themed parties, late night music and comedy shows. “October is a big month for our larger events, as Halloween is one of our favorite times of year to celebrate!” The Halloween kickoff party “A Beautiful Nightmare” with DJ Jenn Booty premiers Saturday October 26th with a special Halloween Drag Performance featuring a surprise guest from LOGO TV’s ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’. Cash costume contest and other fantastic surprises in store for that evening as well. Advanced tickets are available and only 100 will be sold, and they are selling quickly!
Located at 1004 Calumet Avenue, Martinis is a place that serves up much more than great tasting food. They conjure up innovative cocktails and offer a wide variety of craft beers, spirits and wines. Aesthetically the lounge underwent some major changes providing a new more modern atmosphere that is a true destination – a place you’ll want to visit, during the day or night! “The entire lounge has been remodeled. The new lighting, seating and color palette has a more modern look, it really represents us better,” said Ippolito. “We have both high tops and low tables in the lounge, making it functional for dining and cocktailing. It has a swanky feel and it takes on a whole different personality when we have our live entertainment.”
Then on the Eve of Halloween October 30th for Retro Wednesdays, Martinis will present –A Rocky Horror Party. This classic themed party will feature the hottest retro music from the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and more – and it will be hosted by VJ Selecta Hazey. And finally if you are nursing your hangover from Halloween, but crave more fun, you won’t want to miss Martinis’ third and final party – Halloween Hangover on Friday, November 1st with VJ Hazey spinning house, top 40 and EDM all night. This party gives you one last chance to wear your Halloween costume, and enjoy great drink specials and music.
In keeping with their new look, Martinis will be hosting a wide variety of entertainment that cannot be found anywhere else in town. “A fresh new entertainment perspective is what Valparaiso needs. A place where you can wine and dine and stay for a good time! We have all different types of people throughout our daily business, so we strive to offer different entertainment and dining deals to please all of our patrons.” said Ippolito.
“All of our October events are a great way for us to showcase all the changes and improvements we’ve done at Martinis,” said Ippolito. “We have new staff, a great new lounge, and new and improved menus. We added new dishes and kept a lot of the classics – the new menus really give our kitchen a chance to shine.” Martinis offers 12 beers on tap – which get changed quite often, and 100 different bottles to choose from. They also have about 60 different wines on their menu. They offer up great NFL Specials on game days (including $5 Baskets and other food specials) and a $5 Martini List for Karaoke night on Tuesdays. Next up for Martinis is an anticipated dining room rejuvenation – making Martinis the completely rejuvenated package. For more information on upcoming events, be sure to check out www.martinisinvalpo.com. You can also “like” them on Facebook.
Martinis is taking a new direction with their weekly entertainment; steering away from the big bands and providing a more acoustic and easy listening environment - perfect for completing your dining experience. They currently feature live local talent Friday and Saturday evenings at 6pm for dinner, with intentions to expand throughout the week. “We are excited to be having our first Motown Piano night with Michael Dimuccio on October 4th. It is unique experiences like this

NWI Entertainer got to speak with Bernie from the band Bernie Glim and Country Roads to discuss the ongoings of the Country Rock group. The roster encompasses Bernie Glim on guitar and vocals, Tom Gurney rocking the guitar, Al Joseph playing a mean fiddle, Jim Williams soaring on bass guitar, Scotty Bonshire bangin’ on drums (from notable rock group Heartsfield) with Karen Glim and Rachel McGowan blazing vocals and percussion. They are by no means a one trick pony. Depending on the show they can range from Bernie as a solo act, a duo, quartet or up to a seven piece ensemble. Their musical knowledge and repertoire is vast and bleeds into other genres. A discerning ear will also decipher Blues and Jazz roots intertwined into the harmonious mix. They belt out covers and original music. Hundreds of shows a year feature them at concerts, clubs, private engagements, festivals, even church. If they seem like a tight knit group on stage it is because Karen is Bernie’s wife and Rachel is his daughter with the other members being close friends for over a decade. As a full-time musician Bernie’s list of accomplishments are a mile long. After all, he has been playing for 50 years with 43 of them as a professional. While he was twelve years old when he first started performing with a cherry red guitar, the seed of music was planted way before that having grown up in a household were music was held in high regard. Just a few of the names he has shared the stage with include popular acts such as Cheech and Chong, Bobby Rydell, Frankie Avalon and opened for headliners like Billy Ray Cyrus and Styx - just to name a few! Glim fills his free time teaching music lessons and has studied formally at the American Conservatory of Music and the Chicago Conservatory of Music. Advice he offers to aspiring musicians is to not be afraid to be bold. He started off
showing up at venues with his guitar, basically cold calling for just a chance to play a few songs. His charming demeanor paid off. He believes to be a successful working musician one should expand out of their comfort zone and he says to, “see yourself as a musician not just a guitarist.” Bernie has two albums under his belt both released by the Sugar Island Label with plans for the creation of a third album in 2014. Their most recent, Playin’ to Win can be purchased on www.cdbaby.com who recommends the band if you like George Strait, John Hiatt or Toby Keith. It was awarded the seventh spot in the Top 10 Regional CDs of 2007. Personally, I think if you like Johnny Cash you may also relate to Glim’s vocal cords. Bookmark their website www.bernieglimcountryroads.com to keep up with their busy schedule throughout the year. Every Sunday you are invited to, “sing your hearts out and power up for the week with friends and family” at 10:45 am with Bernie, Karen, and Rachel plus a full band at Good Shepherd Lutheran, 295 Sauk Trail in Frankfort, IL. Bernie mentioned that playing there has been one of the highlights of his life. It is a blended service of traditional and contemporary tunes.

As soon as October rolls around, we all start thinking about what fun things we are going to do for Halloween. Getting dressed up and having drinks with friends is all par for the course, but let’s face it – we all love a good scare! So here’s a look at two local haunted attractions sure to scare the pants off you!
Amhurst Asylum (Porter County)
This23,000square foot fright house is located at 228 S. County Road 500 west in Valparaiso, about 5 miles south of US 30 on County Road 500 West. This haunted attraction opened up three years ago and offers those who come a night they won’t soon forget. So what exactly are you experiencing? Well, how about a heart racing adventure sure to scare the pants off you and it starts before you even enter the asylum. Because of its secluded location, the country road you take to get to the asylum is about ¼ mile long and its dark, surrounded by lots of trees. There’s no time to think twice or call a friend because you’ll find yourself with no cell service – so just keep on heading to the doors. Upon entering, you receive your ticket for admittance into the asylum and wait in the dreaded waiting area until it’s your turn to enter the madness. What will you find? Everything from a morgue to a room where patients turned themselves into clowns - and with 22 rooms to look in, you’ll surely have the adrenaline pumping. The experience is about 30 minutes long, but some who are a little more afraid may run through in just 15 minutes. If you experienced the asylum last year, you’ll want to come back again because you’ll witness something different. Tickets cost $20 and can be purchased online or onsite. The experience is targeted for a crowd of 21 and over but children 10 through 13 are allowed in with their parent or guardian. To learn more about the asylum, visit their website, www. amhurstasylum.com or like them on Facebook.
Reapers Realm (Lake County)
One of the oldest operating haunted houses in the area, Reaper’s Realm offers an experience unlike others. Located at 626 177th Street in Hammond, this attraction offers three different frightful experiences. The first is the main house – aptly known as the Haunted Mansion, features multiple levels, detailed scenes and takes nearly 45 minutes to get through. These “scenes” range from a variety of different horror films, and will surely give you nightmares! After making your way through the Haunted Mansion, you hit the Carnevil – in fact, you slide into it. This evil carnival offers up an actual carnival experience, complete with games and rides. And what makes this carnival evil is the crazy clowns running around! The third attraction is Reaper Woods, a haunted trail set along a wooded path. Visitors enter by crawling through the back of a real hearse. The entire experience lasts anywhere from 60-90minutes, and tickets range in price from $10 to $40, depending on which experiences you choose to check out. Tickets and can be purchased online or onsite. You can also purchase group rate tickets – those are not available at the box office. Reapers Realm is open every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday during the month of October. It will also be open on Halloween night, the night before, and the first two days of November. To learn more about the realm, get their hours of operation, and purchase tickets, visit their website, www.reapersrealm.comor like them on Facebook.

Knowing Your Craft Microbrewery: A brewery that produces less than 15,000 barrels of beer per year with 75% or more of its beer sold off-site
Brewpub: A restaurant-brewery that sells 25% or more of its beer on site. Regional Brewery: A brewery with an annual beer production of between 15,000 and 6,000,000 barrels. The moral of this story is: brewpubs are everywhere and are popping up everyday, now go SUPPPORT and enjoy a pint.
2,403 total breweries operated for Cheers! AP some or all of 2012, the highest total since the 1880s………. The majority of Americans live within 10 miles of a craft brewer… An American craft brewer is small, independent and traditional most of the time.Craft brewers are fun and most people that work at them usually not right in the head, which is what you need to push limits. A breweries annual production of 6 million barrels of beer or less is a must to be considered craft. Craft brewers are small brewers, innovative and develop a spin on historic styles or create their own styles. Craft brewers are free of corporate strain (mostly) thus leading to a more hands on approach to the beer and everyone behind the liquid from the owner on down. That’s why you can talk to a person who is on the bottling line and they ooze passion. That’s because this worker is valued, never forgotten and his or her voice is heard. Craft brewers tend to be very involved in their communities throughproduct donations, volunteerism, and sponsorship of events and generally are environmentalist. There is greater connectivity with craft breweries, most times the brew master or owner is sitting not far from you at a brewpub. I challenge you reader to plan a trip to a local brewpub sit down and drink in the culture. That’s one of the nice treats of a local brewery, they all have a certain idea or way of doing things that makes sense for them. Of course everyone arrives at the same conclusion, producing product. Yet it’s great to hear the journey of a beer. How it was thought about and came into fruition from mind to bottle. Below are some interesting facts:

A caring man, he was con cerned that he was disappointi ng his new lover,so he called his doctor for advice. The doc told him that masturbating bef ore sex often helped men last longer during the act. The man decided, “What the hell, I’ll try it.” He spent the rest of the day thinking about where to do it. He couldn’t do it in his office. He thought about the restro om, but that was too open. He considered an alley, but figu red that was too unsafe. Finally, he realized his solution. On his way home, he pulled his truck over on the side of the high way. He got out and crawled und erneath as if he was examin ing the truck. Satisfied with the privacy, he undid his pants and started to masturbate. He clos ed his eyes and thought of his lover. As he grew closer to orgasm, he felt a quick tug at the bottom of his pants. Not wan ting to lose his mental fantas y or the orgasm, he kept his eye s shut and replied, “What?” He heard, “This is the police. When we think of fall brew’s, the first thing that comes to mind is something crisp, clean, and fresh - just like the weather outside. Well, I do anyway! Fall is a great time to sample those flavored brews like pumpkin ale and apple ciders - but what about a strawberry ale? Usually, you don’t think of strawberries and fall, but once you get a taste of a new brew by REDD’s Apple Ale, you will look at strawberries in a different way. From the guys at MillerCoors Brewing Company who brought us REDD’s Apple Ale comes REDD’s Strawberry Ale. This new brew just hit shelves in September and has everyone talking. The strawberry twist on this popular ale has brought upon some great reviews, so I figured it was time to taste it myself.
Here’s the rundown: Appearance: When you pour a
bottle of REDD’s Strawberry Ale in a glass, you can really appreciate its deep golden color. It has a light carbonation and leaves no
Smell: You are instantly hit with the sweet strawberry aroma, but you also get a hint of apple. Taste: There’s no surprise that REDD’s Strawberry Ale has a sweet taste. It definitely has the taste of a juicy strawberry, but it has a finish with apples. The natural flavors are perfectly balanced for the sweet and refreshing taste you just can’t miss. It feels crisp in your mouth, goes down smooth, and there’s no aftertaste. It’s definitely not your traditional beer – maybe that’s why I enjoyed it so much! REDD’s Strawberry Ale is available in 6-pack 12 ounce bottles, 12-pack 12 ounce bottles and 4-pack 16 ounce cans at 5 percent alcohol by volume. Per 12 ounce serving, REDD’s Strawberry Ale contains only 166 calories, 17.2 carbs, less than 1 gram of protein, and 0 grams of fat. Learn more about the product and availability by visiting www. Krystal Kadar has been performing in the NWI and Chicagoland area for nearly a decade. She describes her music as, “something like if Fiona Apple and Elton John got together and made an album. It’s got that bluesy influence and female edge combined with a catchy pop essence.” In 2011 she formed a full band (guitar, bass, drums) to play shows as before that she was mostly a solo act. One that demanded the audiences attention with her honest voice and humble yet magnetized stage presence. As a professional Bellydancer as well as certified fitness instructor, she isn’t shy to be center stage.
as a little girl. You can’t get much more girl power than that!” When asked what makes her music different she explained, “I’d say almost all of my songs are written from a personal experience or tell a story of something I read or was influenced by at some point. I try to stay away from cliche topics and phrases and really put a piece of me in each and every song.” She answered the question, if you could write a song with anybody, alive or deceased, who would it be? With no hesitance she replies, “I think it would be incredibly interesting to write something with Mozart. He seemed like a very charismatic man and composer. I share a a birthday with him, and I think knowing that growing up inspired me to pursue music at a young age.”
She has been spotted performing multiple fresh and innovative shows. She writes all of the original music that the band plays, but they also play some cover songs at shows. She states, “I feel very humbled and honored to play in the Region with many other talented musicians. We have a unique community in the Northwest Indiana music scene, and I think it’s really important for us to support each other in our successes. I play a variety of different shows, from community events, to parties, to art openings to bars and restaurants. I like playing acoustically with just my keyboard and vocals, but I also love rocking out with the full band.”
Folks, keep up with her show schedule and updates on Faceboook and Twitter. Or, go to her website and take a look and listen for yourself at www.krystalkadar.com.
Krystal’s most recent album, Doomsday Fears was inspired by the Mayan calendar prediction of the end of the world. Krystal said “I pretty much believe that we will not know when the end of time will come and it’s not something that can be predicted, so why worry about it. It seems as though every generation has it’s “Doomsday Fears” and soothsayers who claim to know when the world is ending. Doomsday Fears was my sarcastic jab at the crazed conspiracies and hype that the media loves to promote. I worked with local musician Danny Giorgi on the album. He not only recorded and mixed the album, but he played drums, bass and guitar on all of the tracks as well. It was such an amazing creative process with him. We would sit down and jam on a song with drums and keys and then hit record. The songs would build from there. I was lucky that he really understood the direction I wanted to go with the songs and it almost seemed like what I was hearing in my head all those years playing acoustically came to fruition during the recording process.” It is available on iTunes and CD Baby. Since the time Krystal could talk she was singing and performing her own shows for family and friends. Singing in community and church choirs as well as musical theater allowed Krystal to start developing her music from a young age. Even before her parents had signed her up for piano lessons in kindergarden she had already started learning to play by ear, and by age 12 she began writing and singing her own original music. She recalls, “My earliest childhood memory with music would have to be jamming out and singing along to the 80’s hair band music my parents listened to when I was growing up. Jem was definitely my first music role model
