Greg cites Mike Fazekas, his mentor, his friend Ken Orlich for his main council, and friends Darren McDonald, Jim Fernandez, Bill Kalin deserve special mention for the building of this bike. Another special thanks goes out to his nephew, Vince Nygra, who helped with some of the visual modifications. The bike was built from the ground up 100% locally. That’s why it’s the perfect candidate for a feature here in Region Rides. He has a ’79 Sportster that Greg built for him when he was just an infant. Greg takes full credit for his son’s obsession. Part of our conversation went like this: “So you started him young, huh?” “I sure did; I wrecked his life.” That sounds more like father of the year material to us! Greg says he rides the bike about 4,000 miles per year on a slow year. He’s the kind of biker that believes that his machine was built to be ridden, not to sit in the garage. We couldn’t agree more. - RR

Allow me to introduce you to Mike Bates. To our regular readers, his name should already be familiar. He owns Color Craft, Inc. w h i c h was featured i n the

second issue of Region Rides (July 2013). As you might have guessed, anybody who owns a hot rod paint and body shop probably has a hot rod or two of their own hiding in the back. That’s where Mike’s 1937 Ford Slamback comes in. When we were on location shooting the photos for the Color Craft feature, the Slamback was in the interior shop. Mike has owned it for two years, but most of that time has been spent building, stitching, fabricating, and perfecting his new toy. This car is the true essence of hot rodding. He took a fiberglass body, put it on a frame, fitted suspension components from a Mustang, headlights from a Mini cooper, custom made his own LED tail lights, and then stuck a modern G M L S 1 small block under t h e

power-assisted opening hood. The result is definitely greater than the sum of its parts, because this car is gorgeous. The red finish shines brightly in the sun. The headlights are like nothing I have ever seen before. The powertrain (and vintage air) make this car as easy and comfortable to drive as anything you can buy in the showroom today – but a hell of a lot cooler, that’s for certain. The inside is just as detailed and gorgeous as the outside. The fresh interior is made from bison leather. Like the wheels on the outside, the steering wheel is a Billet Specialties piece. There’s a flip out DVD navigation radio in the center stack. Dakota Digital gauges ensure that Mike can always monitor the vital signs of his hot rod. If he chooses to turn off the AC for a bit, the power windows make it where any weather condition is enjoyable from the cockpit of this Slamback. There’s a kickin’ sound system made up of Critical Mass components, and if you pop the trunk and you’ll find a TV, making this car the perfect attention getter for car shows no matter what your passion is. While he hasn’t owned this Ford for very long, Mike plans to keep it –

that is, unless someone else wants it. Before this, he owned a 1937 Ford coupe that was so awesome that it not only got a magazine feature, but someone called him and offered to buy it on the spot just from seeing it. He’s only taken THIS particular car to two shows, but has already won a trophy with it at the Good Guys show in Indy. That speaks volumes for Mike’s

14

creative vision (and the quality of the work that comes out of his shop, too, for that matter). If you remember our last feature (July 2013), you already know that Mike has been into cars his whole life. He’s the perfect kind of guy to open his own shop and share his passion and creativity with everybody. Even his son has a’ 69 Camaro (and he’s

been in the magazine, too). The ’37 Ford has a 1967 Camaro as a stablemate. What’s next for his collection? Who knows. You can be certain, though, that whatever it is it’ll be done to the nines and become another show worthy piece of rolling automotive art. - RR

Old, new, hot rod, luxury liner, truck, and even Jeep… if it’s cool and customized, we like it here at Region Rides. Without further ado, allow me to introduce you to Steve Bellamy and his bad to the bone 1995 V8 Jeep Wrangler. The normal YJ

Jeeps are perfectly capable machines just as they are, especially equipped with the 4.0 inline-6 cylinder engine, but that’s boring. We don’t like boring at Region Rides, and Steve wasn’t down with that either. So

out came the I6, and in went an old school AMC 360 cubic inch V8 to give this Jeep the power it needs to hit the trails, the sand, the mud, the rocks, and nearly anything else. Now we’re getting somewhere. The coolest thing about Steve and his Jeep is that he’s only had it for a year and a half. Take a look at the mod list and the photos. Everything you

see was done by Steve himself in the last 18 months. That just makes the Jeep even more impressive, we think. Adding to this Jeep’s cool factor is the paint job. That’s nearly 20 year old factory paint that has travelled over 95,000 miles you’re seeing shining brightly in those pictures. The only thing that was really replaced out of necessity on the outside was the soft

top, which is brand new. Steve has always been big into the off road lifestyle. He enjoys it because it goes along with his other passions: hunting and personal watercraft. This is his first Jeep, but before he bought this, he had a lifted Ford F-250 that he used to take to the to the trails and tow a camper. The Jeep has a hitch as well, but it’s relegated to just towing a pair

of jetskis for when Steve and the family decide to take a trip to Lake Michigan. Even though he’s only had it for a short time, Steve loves his Jeep. He’s been impressed with the reliability and fun factor, and as he said, “It’s never left me dry yet.” The only problem, though? His daughter Ashley wants it. Steve is already on the hunt for another Jeep, because Ashley is set to get her license next year. His wife, Kim, is also a fan of the Jeep, but for a different reason. Not because it’s cool (because it is), not because of its V8 sound (because it’s got that in spades, too), but because it’s safer than the Kawasaki Ninja motorcycle he owned before that. Steve is a retired union plumber, so he’s got plenty of time to keep active and tinker with the Jeep, and that’s alright with the rest of the family, too. His other daughter, Danielle isn’t too interested in the Jeep yet, but with enough exposure, she could be next. Speaking of tinkering, as the car show season winds

down in his home town of Lake Station and winter begins to set in, Steve has a whole host of projects already lined up to be done to THIS Jeep. By

the time the snow melts and the classic cars come out, we might not even recognize it! - RR

Wayne Caldwell first caught a bad case of the lowrider fever that had swept through southern Los Angeles at the young age of 7. Before the internet craze, easily swapped cell phone pictures, and cars bouncing in music videos - Wayne was looking up to the guys in the neighborhood and their custom lowriders. By the 80’s Wayne had built a lowrider of his own. His first lowrider was a 1958 Chevy. Only after he had invested a

20

lot of time, energy and dough is when he was able to officially join the “LA Professionals” car club and quickly became known in the scene as a regular at numerous car shows and cruises throughout southern California. Times have changed though according to Wayne. He now resides in the Gary, to be exact. His first car now has succumb to a untimely fire and burned to the ground. After giving up it’s ghost, Wayne’s fever wasn’t

cured. Out of the ashes of his ‘58, his passion for customs only grew. Three years later Wayne took a road trip to Missouri where he was able to find the bones of a 1959 Chevy Impala in a junkyard. Actually, there were a few of them there and Wayne picked the nicest one to bring back to life. One thing is for sure, since Wayne’s original lowrider rolled the streets of California, the bar has been

raised in the car show scene. Wayne said, “there’s a lot more competition out there nowadays.” But Wayne’s 1959 Chevrolet Impala holds it’s own weight even in today’s car game. It is painted

a beautiful 1957 Cadillac turquoise blue; the top and trunk is painted a matching silver metal flake with candy and pearl patterns accentuating the curves and lines of the body. His ride is un-

doubtedly a head turner not only of fellow drivers but judges alike. Like a beauty queen, it has multiple trophies, distinctions, and awards that cover the whole radar from best in show to best in paint. He can be seen driving his current lowrider throughout the NWI area and Chicagoland. If you happen to end up at a stop light with him there is a 100% chance you will not

be able to resist taking a peek at this turquoise jewel. The interior is original and matches the color of the paint with the addition of the timelessness houndstooth fabric inserts which add to the classy vibes. This lush vehicle sits on a set 22 inch wheels in the rear with 20 inch fronts. Even more impressive is that nearly 80% of the work was done by Wayne, his family, and friends. This classic rides on a custom hydraulic

suspension that has been mixed and matched together for the ideal setup. Wayne’s second oldest son has been skilled in welding since a teen and was able to help his father reinforce the frame in preparation for the hydraulics system at the age of 16 years old. Wayne explained, “I like hydraulics because the response time is totally different than airbags. With a flip of a switch you can make your car sit high,

sit low, where ever I wanna go.” Not only does the hydraulic suspension change the ride’s height it also can make the tires leap off the ground 25 to 30 inches! His younger children also spent time in the garage assisting Wayne, lending a hand while he spent nights and weekends working on the car. This car is truly apart of the family. - RR

Hoosier’s Hottest Garage Written By: Marisha Massie

It isn’t every day that one gets to meet a former professional six time world champion race car driver. It also isn’t the norm to get access to a businessman who doesn’t just sell products but actually lives the lifestyle of the culture he represents. Tom Martin, owner of Classy Chassis in Valparaiso, Indiana is a rarity in many aspects and his business is cut from the same cloth. Upon entry onto the property it appears there is a custom truck show going on. But alas, it is just another day at Classy Chassis. When you hear the phrase, “the sky’s the limit” that isn’t always the case, there is a limit. But, not over at Tom’s. His team of experts can literally hand make anything you can imagine for your mode of transportation. They have authentic specialists to cover any order, even for the customer with a fiercely wild imagination. The list of services they offer is literally a mile long, half mile if it’s in extra small 24

font. This custom shop’s creations can be found around the world as they truly cater to an international market. These guys are artists in every sense of the word. Be it regarding bodywork, custom paint, remote starts, classic car restoration, lift kits, spray in bed liners, high-tech leather truck seats, vinyl graphics, window tinting, insane upgrades and off the wall concepts - there is an in-house genie to make your wish come true. That is where they stand apart, the amount of experience and knowledge under one roof is unmatched. They even offer a nationwide drop off and pick up option. So, if you can’t easily get to Valparaiso, Classy Chassis will find a way. That is what has put them on the map, the attitude that anything is seriously possible. They not only can allow you to have the coolest

transpiration on your block, they also can save you time as well as money. Tom started out as a customer, then went onto become an employee for Classy Chassis before buying it in 2007 when the former owner retired. He had many dreams on how to expand and flesh out the shop which are now a reality. A goal he is currently engaged with is looking for just the right spot to open a second shop. Tom beams with delight and an internal joy when showing pictures of his shop’s custom creations which include everything from bikes, boats, modern and classic cars, campers,

tractors, to a variety of customized trucks. They are truly unique and blow away any constraints that other businesses are blocked by. Tom revealed that growing up and to this day if someone told him, “you can’t,” he would try anyways. This has lead to many victories for his shop and career. Being a leader is in his roots as his parents owned a business in his childhood

that repaired machinery. However, racing and cars pumps through his blood. His mom used to race cars! When asked what his family thinks of his business, he flashes a bright smile when communicating the answer. “My wife of 19 years (Laura) has stood by my side and helped me with the business as the Office Manager. She is such a great partner and mom of our twins, Jonathan and Christina who are 11 years old.

They also get to help me sometimes on Saturday when I work at the shop.” A tour of Classy Chassis looks like a car museum or the set of the reality shows that are ever popular regarding vehicle customization. Well, except I saw hardworking gentlemen working as one team instead of the drama that goes along with television. But, this business has been around and honing it’s craft way before it was made trendy. The doors first opened in 1975 and soon became the leading pioneer in van and truck conversions. At that time, you could not find other businesses that

were able to accomplish what they could. Considering their artistry, the staff at Classy Chassis is like a family of mechanical wizards. The shop even has pet projects that they work on together in their spare time. The most recent is the stunningly beautiful 1968 Camaro. What they started with was a skeleton that would be

28

found in a junkyard. Now it looks better than when it was in it’s prime. The paint color reminds me of a bejeweled sunset and is called Sunburst Orange Pearl. Tom aptly stated, “I am in the business of making people happy.” That is apparent from the smiles on his customer’s faces caught in many of the pictures of them picking up their

newfound or rekindled loves. If I listed all the services they offer it would take up this whole magazine. Go to their website at ClassyChassisTrucks.com. Better yet, stop by and take a look at some finished vehicles

or just to get some ideas on how they can upgrade your ride. They also buy, sell, and trade as well as give free estimates. What I can guarantee is that you won’t walk away the same. The masterpieces that are

available to gawk at will change the way you dream because at 1000 Axe Avenue, Valparaiso, Indiana fantasies come true on a daily basis. There are some jaw dropping pictures on their Facebook page,

go look. You can stare for free! Call them for the upgrades you always wanted but haven’t dared at (219) 462-5536. - RR

Written By: Marisha Massie Region Rides had the chance to sit down with Public Relations Representative, George Kettell of Midwest Vans Ltd to learn more about the van club and the charitable benefits that they are involved in. Right away it is evident in George’s voice that the group is equally passionate about vans as they are about social outreach in the community and helping to add to the quality of life f o r

people experiencing hard times. Not only do they like big vehicles they a l s o h a v e b i g hearts! One of the many remarkable charity events that the van club is responsible for will embark on its 37th yearly ride this December to drop off presents at the Marillac House on the westside of Chicago. The donated presents and food are raised through a lively

celebration, “Toys for Tots - Vegas Night” hosted by Franco’s Sports Bar and Pizzeria located at 2712 Condit Street in Highland, Indiana. This year’s glitzy bash is on Saturday, December 7, 2013. Dice as well as cards will be flying from 6 pm through 9 pm. Entry into the event is a can of food and an unwrapped toy. All toys and food will go straight to the not for profit organization. Any money that is donated goes toward buying gifts for the kids. Three to four club members will put on their Blackjack dealer game faces and donate their time, hoping for a wildly successful and entertaining

night. Try your luck at the tables where fake money is used to gamble but the very real winners are the children! A pleasurable selection of Classic Rock will keep the sound waves interesting from a live band, The Tilt (club member Pat Shannon on drums) starting at 9:30 pm and jamming out to 11 pm. Arrive early with your food and gift contribution to enjoy the festivities, after 9 pm the regular cover charge will apply. You are invited to hang out with a fun crowd and gamble for a great cause! Help Midwest Vans Ltd help children and their families by partying and giving a present to a child who will

be touched by your thoughtfulness. By participating in this event you are supporting less fortunate kids who may never forget the warm acts of kindness during the cold holiday season. Door prizes for Vegas Night include a broad array of great items donated by Cabella’s. Other prizes that have been won in the past have covered a large range of goodies such as a free night stay at a downtown Chicago hotel to steakhouse dinners! Prizes will be announced around 8:30 pm. George recalled his first year of dropping off presents and commented one of the children told him he looked like Santa and he has been hooked ever since! There is a striking resemblance; but instead of reindeer dashing through the snow pulling Santa’s sled it is customized vans! In 2012 the club was able to double the amount of presents they have ever had by working with members from

Chicago based Ace of Spades Van Club. This year an even bigger turn out is hoped for! Marillac Social Center has helped struggling families since 1914 in many aspects of life including family services, child development, social services, as well as youth and senior programs. One of the main intentions of the Marillac Social Center is, “We’re here to help families become stronger.” The center has publicly announced the children’s and families’ appreciation toward the “vanners” of Midwest Vans Ltd for their generosity and continued support. “The children and staff at the center have been delighted year after year to see the psychedelically embellished vehicles descend upon the center.” Check out their website for more details on their different endeavors to enrich lives, Marillachouse.org.
