Editor’s Note

Change!

Falling in love with it. One thing that remains constant in our lives is change. Even knowing this, we don’t always embrace change when it comes. How many of us vow to eat better and exercise daily? But end up not accomplishing our goals because it involves serious change. The days of fast food must decrease and weekly food prep now begins. Waking up 30 minutes early, instead of pressing the snooze button, is required to get your workout in. Change! I too struggle with change, and after some introspection realized that I must make a conscious decision to fall in love with it. How do I do that? I figured my health is important enough for me to become passionate about it. This means that my attitude towards getting results requires me to embrace change. I’m taking a bold step since the holidays are upon us to put some habits back into place. When my body says; “Hey workout!”- I’m going to workout. There’s an elliptical in my spare room and a home gym system in my in my garage, hence, I have no excuses when I can’t make it to the gym. If I’m craving potato chips, I’ll choose to eat nuts instead, and will already have them accessible in a ziplock bag while traveling. As I said, the holidays are quickly approaching and everyone will be indulging, and that’s okay as long as it’s in moderation. However, please don’t forget to incorporate those healthy ingredients into those treats. Above all, keep it moving with exercise on a sunny or snowy day. We put together Halloween recipes in Trick or Treat Without the Cheat, that helps you incorporate healthier ingredients that will satisfy your sweet tooth. If you’re willing to make a change and try a different workout Yoga at the Brickhouse Cardio Club in San Diego is a must read . Finally, I’ve personally signed up for Laila Ali’s Fall Fitness Challenge found on the free StepBet App (sb). I’m also having fun participating in healthy challenges with my friends via another free App called FitBit ( Fitbit By Fitbit, Inc.). Seeing the achievements that my friends and I are making daily is encouraging.

Florida Vacations, Miami and Orlando Hilton Orlando Bonnet Creek (HOBC) Staying at the HOBC was a real treat for our family. We were surrounded by beautiful grounds, an elegant pool (to include a wave pool), indoor shopping mall , and easy access to Downtown Disney. Which is important if you have kids. Yoga at the Brickhouse Cardio Club in San Diego Written by: Melina ‘ Mel’ Pagoulatos Edits, Vanessa Shorter

The practice of yoga has been around for thousands of years. Within the last few years, it has gained new students as many are finally realizing the benefits of yoga. Initially yoga was designed as a spiritual practice, however, it has many benefits to the body, which is why a lot of people are attracted to it. There have been numerous scientific studies showing all of the health benefits of yoga which include; cardio health, increased strength and range of motion, stress relief, and weight management.

There are many different forms of yoga such as Vinyasa, Meditation, Hot Yoga and Bikram- which are the most popular forms. Brickhouse Cardio Club in San Diego is a small gym that offers a variety of fitness classes, nonetheless, they have an outstanding yoga program offering 19 yoga classes a week. This is the only Brickhouse Cardio Club that has a yoga room. The room has great ambiance with dimly lit lights and aromatherapy. The room is temperature controlled as they offer ‘hot yoga’ in addition to various forms of yoga. I have recently made yoga a part of my daily fitness routine as it is a great mind and body stress reliever. I visited Brickhouse Cardio Club in San Diego and took an Island Flow yoga class. I was curious about this form as the name implies that I would be on an island somewhere doing sun salutations. That was not the case, but perhaps I can convince them to do a class at the beach which is nearby the studio. As I entered the studio I was warmly greeted by the instructor, Laura. Being that it was my first yoga class there, she made sure I had water and the necessary accessories (yoga blocks and a strap for stretching). I wore yoga shorts , a workout top and was barefoot. Laura had relaxing music on with ocean sounds as she walked us through each pose. She would occasionally correct posture if needed. While this wasn’t a ‘hot’ yoga class I was dripping sweat about 30 minutes into the session. I came to find out later the room was 90 degrees. I was impressed that Laura took the time during her instruction , to explain what muscles were being stretched in each pose and offered modifications -which are important. Laura trained through the Yoga Alliance which has one of the largest and most recognized yoga teacher certification programs.

Mel and Yoga instructor, Laura

Island Flow yoga is a combination of Restorative and Flow yoga. The poses are held longer than a normal yoga class resulting in deeper stretches. After the class, I was surprised that I was not only stretched out, but I was also energized. If you are in San Diego stop by Brickhouse Cardio Club and take a yoga class. It is definitely worth it. You can view the full list of classes that Brickhouse offers at: http://www.brickhousecardio.com/location/BrickhouseSD-CA/99/ Courtesy images - Melina ‘ Mel’ Pagoulatos and Creatista, Yay Images.

Trick or Treat Without the Cheat

Get into the Halloween spirit by creating meals with clean lowcalorie foods. It’s okay to partake of a little candy, however, there are alternatives that will allow you to stay on course with your lifestyle change. Try one of these recipes and let us know what you think!

Harry Potter Pumpkin Juice Ingredients 2 cups of pumpkin, chopped up into chunks 2 cups of apple juice ½ cup of pineapple juice 1 teaspoon of honey (more or less to your liking) Cinnamon, Ginger, Nutmeg and/or Allspice (all ground, to taste) Prep Time- 15-20 minutes/2 servings

Directions Juice the pumpkin pieces by squeezing through a cheesecloth or using a juicer if you have one. Pour the pumpkin juice, apple juice and pineapple juice into a blender. Add the honey (we recommend you start with 1 teaspoon, as you can add some later!) to the juices and blend thoroughly. Add your spices (to taste). This might take some experimentation to get right. Chill your pumpkin juice or serve iced and enjoy! Recipe tip from BlaizeDance, Inc.- Adults: Add a mint leaf for garnish on the top. Kids: Add raisins on top to create a smiley face. Mummy Toast Recipe for Kids Ingredients 8 slices whole-grain bread 1 cup pizza or spaghetti sauce 6 slices part-skim mozzarella cheese, sliced into strips 8 black or green olives, sliced in half Prep Time- 5-10 minutes/Serves 8

Directions Toast the bread Spread two tablespoons of sauce on each slice of bread. Arrange the strips of cheese to look like bandages, by alternating the direction of the strip and leaving space between each piece. Place the olive slices on the bread as “eyes. Broil the pizza toast in the oven or broiler until the cheese has melted. Spicy Deviled Eggs Ingredients 12 eggs 1 1/2 tablespoons Dijon mustard. 1 1/2 tablespoons mayonnaise. 1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce. 1/2 teaspoon hot pepper sauce, or to taste 1 pinch salt and black pepper. 1/4 teaspoon ground paprika, for dusting (divided) 1 (6 ounce) can black olives, drained and cut in half horizontally. Add all ingredients to list

Prep and Cook Time-35 minutes/ 6 servings

Directions Place eggs in a saucepan with a lid, pour in water to cover, bring to a boil, and remove from the heat. Cover and let stand for 10 to 12 minutes. Remove eggs from hot water and let cool. Peel the eggs. Cut each egg in half lengthwise, remove the yolks, and place the yolks in a bowl with the mustard, mayonnaise, Worcestershire sauce, hot pepper sauce, and salt and pepper. Mash the yolks, and stir the mixture until smooth and thoroughly combined. Fill each egg half with the deviled yolk mixture, using a spoon, piping bag, or a sturdy plastic bag with a corner cut off. Dust each egg with a pinch of paprika, and place an olive half, round side up, in the center of each. Refrigerate until chilled, 20 to 30 minutes, and serve cold. Cook's notes: “You can decorate these for Halloween by putting a black olive "eyeball" in the center of each. A sprinkle of paprika adds a nice bloodshot look. They're fun and delicious.” BlaizeDance, Inc, notes: You can also add green garnish to this recipe for a more upscale look Sources: Photographer:chaosmediamgt for Yay Images and http://allrecipes.com/recipe/128914/spicy-deviled-eggs/© 2016 Allrecipes. com -Recipe by: karlyz-All Rights Reserved- Privacy Policy Your California Rights

Alisa Aslanova’s Final Bow

Alisa Aslanov As we glanced through social media looking for photographers with beautiful images of dancers, we discovered Alisa’s Instagram page. We contacted her in hopes of displaying some of her work in our magazine. After having a conversation with her, it became apparent that behind the pictures was an interesting story of a young woman who has accomplished many things and we knew that we had to share her story. BDF: At what age did you start dancing and who encouraged your love for this art? Alisa: My mother lovingly engaged in my development of dance. I was a lively child, and I loved to dance on stage. When I finally started taking lessons, I did not really understand ballet dance technique to the fullest extent. However, as I began to learn and understand the skill, it was a total rush for me. Ballet is like a drug, once you try it, you cannot stop. I fell in love with the art wholeheartedly and saw myself doing it forever! BDF: Was ballet the only dance that interested you? Alisa: Before the ballet I played tennis and did a lot of skateboarding. Nonetheless, when I entered ballet school my performances ended all other activities and my time was devoted to the study. BDF: How long did you dance for Kremlin Ballet Company before becoming their Principal dancer? Alisa: I danced in the Kremlin Ballet for six seasons. I was immediately adopted as a soloist and danced many solos even though I was a new member. But I was also in the dancing solo roles, but also was in the corps de ballet. As I matured at Kremlin Ballet, four years later, I became the leading dancer of the theater.

BDF: There are a lot of great dancers and choreographers out there. What dancers or choreographers do you admire? Also, what kind of influence did they have on your career? Alisa: Indeed, Russian ballet is very developed, and there are many talantleveyshih artists. For me, the priority has never been physical dance-individuality is paramount. So I’m interested in these ballerinas; Diana Vishneva, Oksana Kardash and Catherine Krysanova. These women are not superstars seeking fame, rather, they are strong in spirit. If we talk about who inspires me, it is, of course, Rudolf Nureyev. Personally, I believe he’s a genius, an artist who inspires dancers everywhere. He is a legend. BDF: At 26, you have taken your final bow on stage. What led you to retire at this point in your life? Alisa: I finished my ballerina career in February 2016. Two years ago my friends and I created a magazine about ballet called the Ballet Insider. Since we put a tremendous amount of effort into this project, today, are putting a lot of effort into its development.Today, it is considered the best ballet magazine in Russia, This year I graduated from Moscow State University (MSU) , named after Lomonosov, with a degree in journalism. Attending MSU was necessary as it prepared me for what I am doing today. Of course, the decision to retire was one of the most difficult decisions of my life. At some point in this journey you need to make a choice, look inside yourself and answer honestly- What do you want out of life? For me, time is the answer. That is what I feel every day and I try to live in the here and now and desire to absorb every little moment. I made my choice and every day in the pages of my journal, I praise ballet.

BDF: I read that The Snow Maiden is your favorite role. What was it like to perform for the last time? Alisa: When I was backstage before this last piece- I listened to the music of Tchaikovsky and tried to feel every second of this unforgettable evening. I melted in this production at the end and it tore my heart apart. It was the most difficult performance in my career and I will never forget all the actors who cried at the final stage of “The Snow Maiden ballet when she (the character) melted. I had a great relationship with the company. Therefore, it was hard for us to leave. I was touched and grateful for my very dear friends and for their warm attitude towards me. That evening, as I melted in the theater as the Snow Maiden, I left behind many memories. BDF: Although you have closed the chapter in terms of performing on stage, do you see yourself perhaps making guest appearances in the future? Maybe for a special event at Kremlin? Alisa: I put an end to the speeches and do not plan to dance in the near future. I do not regret this decision. I do not live in the past and illusions.

BDF: What message do you want to send to the dancers and the ballet community through your writing? Alisa: In my journal, I talk about strong people - people who have dedicated their lives to ballet. I show what the viewer cannot see behind the scenes. As an insider of the ballet world, the pages of this magazine displays the perfection of the extraordinary people who, through their craft achieve goals that require a great deal of willpower. BDF: You told me that you are not a professional photographer, but you take stunning photos. What are you trying to capture when taking pictures of dancers? Alisa: I’m not a photographer, not a videographer. Sometimes I like to shoot video and take pictures for friends. People that I capture, I know very well, and it allows me to show the unusual shape of their faces and other parts of their bodies. I don’t think that I could shoot a random person and create the same unique effect. I love to capture images that stop time for a moment realizing that this moment will never happen again.

BDF: Beyond your writing career, what’s next for you? Are you planning to write any books or be a part of a charitable organization that pertains to dance? Alisa: I want to build my life according to my inner voice and I aspire to build the self-esteem of others. For me, it is important to stay true to yourself, and this will allow me to achieve the goals that I have in front of me. My primary goal is to make the Ballet Insider a global publication.

raditional colors: Browns, greens, oranges, brick reds, and yellows are colors that naturally appear in nature during the fall. Adding these bouquet of colors creates a warm and cozy atmosphere. Gold plates, clear glasses, diamonique napkins holders, and candles is perfect for an afternoon and evening dining. Crafted gold leaves, cinnamon sticks and and themed salt and pepper shakers makes for a very unique table setting that your guest will undoubtedly remember.

Must have: Deep brown tablecloth, orange runner, gold plates, candles, pine cones, and pumpkin flower arrangements to create this look. White autumn colors: If you are into crafting, you will have a lot of fun with do it yourself projects when it comes to these table settings. Spraying your pumpkin white, beige or silver adds a neo-urban style feel to your setting. Not crafty? Light colored squash can also be added instead. Selecting tiny neutral pieces like acorns, burgundy berries, black and dark woods (African Blackwood or Malaysian Blackwood), creates an eclectic city ambiance. Must have: White (or light neutral) tablecloth (runner and napkins), burgundy berries, black accessories, antique style candle holders, and white pumpkins to mimic this look.

LIVING LEGEND Jeffrey Daniel

Dancer, Singer, Choreographer, Producer, and Musician I walked down the aisle to marry my love while, “This Is for the Lover in You “ played in the background. Listening to Shalamar in the 70’s and 80’s obviously left an impact on my life. In your opinion, how did Shalamar change the face of music? JD: First, let me say that I am honored that you included our music in your wedding, and I hope that you and your husband are having a wonderful union together. Yes we are! Thank you for asking. Jeffrey, who inspired you to sing? JD: My mother was a classical pianist and played for our church, Cornerstone Institutional Baptist Church in Los Angeles. She was famous for starting gospel choirs with the kids in our neighborhood. My mom, two older sisters and I would sing together at home and practiced a lot so that we would have our stuff together on Sunday mornings. So this is where I got my singing background. Actually, James Cleveland is my godfather and he used to sing in the choir as well. I had great vocalists around me all the time. In fact, Cleo Kenney, who sang on Shalamar’s first demo, “Uptown Festival”, was in the choir next to Jody. As we talk more, you’ll see how everything came together as time went on. Looks like God was bringing all the key elements together in church in preparation for Shalamar. Looks like God was bringing all the key elements together in church in preparation for Shalamar. JD: Definitely. Just as you said everything came together.

77

Who inspired your love for dance? JD: Like a lot of people I grew up watching the Jackson Five on television and I used to dance at home with my mom and sisters. My love for dancing just grew and I continued in urban contemporary dance. I have no formal training, but that never stopped me because I loved it so much. My love for dancing lead me to where I am today, a world class choreographer who cultivated his own dances. Tell us how you became a dancer on Soul Train. JD: In the beginning when Soul Train first started, you did not have to audition to be a dancer. However, by the time I wanted to get on the show, they started auditioning dancers. As you can imagine the lines were always long because it was the place to be. But I was determined to get on the show because there was nowhere else that I’d rather be. One night, I met my friend, Tyrone Proctor ( who was a Soul Train dancer) at a club called Maverick’s Flat on Crenshaw Boulevard in Los Angeles. By the way, Howard Hewett used to sing at Maverick’s Flat and this is where we met. Anyway, that night Tyrone and I left the club and headed to Soul Train. When we got there, they let us in and said that Tyrone could dance because he was a regular, but I couldn’t. I ended up dancing anyway. You know what’s funny? I never dreamt that Donald Cornelius and Dick Griffey would form a record label that would open doors for me to become a recording artist as well. How did the group formulate? JD: About 1977 Soul Train Records along with Dick Griffey and Simon Soussan released Shalamar’s first single called “Uptown Festival” which was a number one hit. The album,”Uptown Festival” was a collage of Motown records with artist such as Smokey Robinson. Dick and Soussan took songs and made medleys, but they needed an act to record them. So they asked me if I would find a girl for this project so I brought on Mickey Braiden , who is the cousin of the De Barge family. It didn’t work out because she was pregnant at the time. Then I thought about Jody. We were already dancing on Soul Train and quickly became the predominant dancing couple. We were recognized not only for our dancing but also for our fashion. I knew that Jody could sing because she sang in the church choir with me since she was 12. But she auditioned anyway. She was great and was automatically placed in the group. We auditioned Gary

Mumford, (who was the original third member of the group named Shalamar) and he sang on “Uptown Festival”. Since Gary was not willing to travel we had to let him go. Then I contacted Gerald Brown and Howard Hewitt, around the same time, and asked them to join. Howard had other obligations so he declined. When Gary left the group, I asked Howard a second time and he accepted. Incidentally, right after Howard accepted the second time I asked, our next single, “The Second Time Around” was a huge hit! Who came up with the name Shalamar? JD: The name of the group came from Simone Suzanne. The word Shalamar is Moroccan and it the name of some beautiful garden in the middle east. The idea was that our music was like a perfume, a sweet smelling fragrance of dance and music. What’s the secret to Shalamar’s success? JD: When the group started it was definitely perfect timing because of my good friend and producer, Leon Sylvers, who started SOLAR Records (Sound of Los Angeles Records), was instrumental in screening songs for Shalamar. In fact, Leon produced all the albums for Shalamar and he definitely helped us become successful. Jody, Howard and myself, changed the face of music visually with our fashion, upbeat, positive dance music, and ballads that made you fall in love. The quality of the lyrics and the melody was magic. Along with Leon, we created a sound that was enchanting. It is the Sound of Los Angeles that still lives on after all this time. People love our music to this day. You guys still perform together, right? JD: Yes, we regrouped back in 1999 when LL Cool J and Babyface did the remake of “This Is for the Lover in You”. Babyface wanted to bring Shalamar back. Howard and I were up for it, but Jody did not want to do it. I said to Jody that people would love to see her again. She had her solo career then and told me that she did not want to go back to the past. We respected her wishes, there were no hard feelings. Howard and I performed, just us two, for a crowd of 14,000 at the Wembley Stadium from 19992000. Around that time, people who attended her concerts wanted her to do Shalamar songs. Since the fans kept requesting Shalamar tunes, she challenged Howard and I legally and tried to stop people from booking us for shows. We were like what!?

79

Why did she do this? JD: I am not sure. We could not have imagined that she would do something like that. It was very shocking. She told us she did not want to perform with the group, she did not want to go backward, and we respected her decision. In spite of her trying to block our bookings, people still booked us. We never fell out over this, we are still friends, and we even did a tour together-1998 in Japan. There is always two sides to a story, I invite you to research. But I wanted to let everyone know that I love her and we are still down. Did the lawsuit effect you guys at all? JD: Jody acquired the trademark to the Shalamar name and started touring with two new people. Thankfully, Howard and I were able to get reformation and brought things back to the level it should be. We started getting a lot of jobs in places like Dubai, France, UK and other markets. We just moved forward and did not look back. So tell us a little about Carolyn Griffey. How she became the new female singer and how long she’s been with you and Howard? JD: Carrie Lucas sang on our first single “Uptown Festival” and she also sang harmony with the The Whispers on her album, “Street Corner Symphonies”. Her daughter is Carolyn Griffey. Since Shalamar was Carrie’s favorite group, Carolyn was the perfect choice when we decided to bring a female lead back into the group. She knew that we reached out to Jody to come back, so she was reluctant at first. Even though Carolyn is like family, she came in and earned her spot and is doing very well. Her mother, Carrie has a jazzy R&B style, but Carolyn has her own technique and niche. It’s amazing when she sings. What is your fondest memory of being a part of this group? JD: Oh boy, there are so many. In the beginning, I remember watching all the dancers on stage and the great artist like the O’Jays, The Jackson Five, and Aretha Franklin. So for us to finally perform on that very stage was an incredible feeling. Primarily, the acceptance that we gained from the music industry and the love from our fans worldwide was an incredible feeling. For our music to have gone so far and still have an impact today is an amazing.

What was it like working with him on Smooth Criminal? JD: In 1987, Michael asked me to be his choreographer on his next album, “Bad.” At that time, there were no other street dance choreographers in the industry-only me. I was in high demand and worked with Vanessa Williams on “The Right Stuff ” and with Johnny Gill’s “Rub You the Right Way.” Anyway, working with Michael was a great experience and I want to thank him because he gave my career another new dimension. Mike really loved to dance and some of the dancers in “Smooth Criminal” were from Alvin Ailey. Not being trained in a traditional dance school, I didn’t count dance the way that dancers did. I counted the music, the beats. The dancers would start on 5, then I would count the beat, 5, 6, 7, 8 and then 1. Mike dances from the soul so he and I clicked as we were in step with every beat of the music. Mike would just do the counts that I gave him and the dancers would be counting from their original 5, 6, 7, 8. It was quite funny. We all (Mike, the dancers and I) just decided to use what worked best for us in terms of counting and it eventually came together. I am now versed in counting when teaching, but still, I like dancers to feel the music and not focus so much on the counts.

My husband and I think that Smooth Criminal has the best choreography work of all the MJ’s videos. What is the secret to that famous lean move? JD: I am surprised that you did not say “Thriller” was the best video. I am honored that you picked “Smooth Criminal.” The first time I did the lean step was in 1984 in Paul McCartney’s “Silly Love Songs” (Give My Regards to Broad Street) . Now in the “Smooth Criminal” video, this was the first time that the lean was done with a group of people. Since it is now long after, I can tell you that we placed a hook in the heel of the shoe, a screw came up out of the floor. This technique allows the dancer to pivot from left to right. The very first lean in the video is done without any tricks. However, the second lean is done with a harness created with piano string wire that is attached to the pants on each hip. This harness helped support the dancer as they lowered their bodies towards the floor. The word on the street is that you taught Michael the moonwalk. JD: I did. Mike wanted to learn a lot of steps that we did in the Electric Boogaloo. This is not an easy move, so it took some time for him to get it. What did you like about working with Michael Jackson? JD: It is easy to dance with Mike because he was a natural dancer. He wanted to get with the Electric Boogaloo. He really liked my style and timing and we have the same temperament with dance and rhythm. When we worked on a project he was never tired. He would always ask me; “Jeff are you okay to keep going?” He was also very respectful when he did not like a dance move. He would say very kindly, not snobbish at all; “That part, don’t you think it’s a little too big.” The way he critiqued my moves always made me want to improve my technique. I cannot sing enough praises about working with him. Look how hard he works. After “Thriller” he could have rested, but he wanted to keep going even after “Bad.” Growing up in Brooklyn, breakdancing and popping were popular. Since you worked with the Electric Boogaloos what do you think about the dances that millenniums are doing today like Crunk? JD: Crunk is a very powerful dance and expression. Love to see that explosion. Those who crunk must ask themselves this question: Would you crunk for an entire concert? I am not dissing it. Tried it for a while but had to sit down and catch his breath!

Do you think that today’s style of hip hop dancing will be around as long as Popping and locking have been? JD: Groups that come out with new formations and appear on some of these competitive dance shows incorporates so much running and jumping, then they get into place. That’s not dancing, it’s cheerleading. It’s formations in a drill team more than dancing if you ask me. Some are good, but I would say in order for a dance to be around you should expand your training. Learn some jazz or ballet dance techniques. Crunking is dance too and I love the kids and their energy. But can you crunk with a girl and do it for an entire record? How is hip hop being represented in movies and media today? JD: What I have just said about these dance shows may have offended some. Not my intent, but you asked me about it. Kids who are watching these popular dance movies are not really getting the essence of contemporary urban dance. They are taking choreography that comes from black dancers who live in black communities. In these movies, they place the white kids in the front and the black kids in the background. Ten years from now those watching the movie will not know that these dances came from African Americans. I watched how it all evolves. Don’t mind white or other cultures doing our dances and showcasing it in movies, but don’t make a movie with blacks as a backdrop. For us who’s been there, it has been a struggle. No one would hire a street dancer for commercials or movies. It affects me as I could not get hired for a dance job even though I was a famous dancer on Soul Train. Back then they would not hire a street dancer. Today, you have to know street dancing to get the job. Not hating or being racial. This is about our culture, our neighborhoods, so let our people lock , robot, bodypop , and contemporary urban dance in the spotlight. We have to wave our flags. So we wave our flags!

Getting Personal and Achieving Success in this Business

Getting Personal and Achieving Success in Business How do you stay in such good shape Jeffrey? Apart from dance do you have a fitness regimen? JD: Dancing and taking care of myself is about it. Not a health freak, no drinking, no smoking. Just dancing. Must ask this question for the ladies out there. Are you single? JD: I am not married, I am single. It’s not intentional, don’t want to grow old by myself. I hope to settle down with a partner. Tell us about your children. JD: I have two girls, Amber and Jalee. Jalee is a unique name. What does it mean? JD: The J portion is my name and the rest comes from Kelly, her mother’s name. Amber made me a grandfather and I have two grandsons out in Los Angeles who I spend a lot of time with when I’m out there. In 2009, I came for Michael’s memorial , I stayed a couple of extra months with wth, my family. Actually, I’m on my way to LA in a couple of weeks primarily to spend as much time as I can with them. What are some things that people may not know about you? JD: I am very quiet off stage. Read books, practice guitar, watch educational videos and go to the cinema. I love popcorn and a good movie. If there’s a good movie showing, I am there! When people meet me they are often surprised at my fashion because it’s kind of stands out. I don’t seek any attention. If they recognize me great, if they don’t, that’s okay too. I am a good cook and my pancakes are famous. The recipe is from my grandmother and mother. My goddaughters in Nigeria always ask for pancakes. They say; “Papa, can you please make us some pancakes.” They love it. What is special about your pancakes? JD: I use Aunt Jemima, separate and beat the eggs, add cinnamon- for a bit of flavor. I beat the yolk separately from the whites. I whip the whites like you would when making a lemon meringue pie, Then cook them in a pan until they get

brown. Golden brown, not yellow. Must have a brown tint with a soft fluffy texture. I enjoy seeing people eat. Are there any choreographers you admire or inspired by? JD: Being that I am off the scene, not really. I’m not a contemporary kind of guy so, in today’s context, I don’t know who they are or watch them closely. Anything creative catches my eye, monotony does not. Today you have a lot of so called choreographers who are dancers who just throw different styles of dances together. Then they open up a dance studio down the street without knowing anything about the choreography craft. They need to take some time and pay their dues in the choreography industry so they can truly tell a story through dance correctly. I am uninterested in people who are not creating with the goal of motivating people to feel good about themselves. Do you like a particular video in terms of choreography? JD: Drake’s video, “Hotline Bling”, with him dancing alone in most of the shots. This is not a choreographed piece, but it’s interesting and I’m drawn to it. He is

unique, he’s not trying to prove anything, he’s just being honest , being himself and doing his thing. When I look at the video, it delivers “feel good” vibes. You can’t help but feel good watching him dance. There are so many awesome groups out there, SWV, New Edition, NSYNC, Boyz II Men, En Vogue, and Destiny’s Child whose music still has an impact today. What’s your advice in terms of longevity in the business for new groups just starting out? JD: There is only one answer to that question. When you’re just starting your career in anything, music, dancing, singing - master your craft. Try to be the best singer, musician, dancer, choreographer, fashion stylist, or architect. If you are the best, work and money will come. If you are doing it “for- the- now” it will come now and be done now. Music made in the 80’s by Shalamar is still selling the house out. Master that thing, expand it and improve on it. You may not get exactly what you are aiming for, but you’ll get more than you’ve expectedas it leads to other things. Be willing to sacrifice. There are no guarantees. You must love it enough to sacrifice for it.

Nigerian Idol and New Projects What artists have you produced? JD: Two acts that I’ve worked with is a group called P-Square, Peter Okoye and Paul Okoye from Nigeria. Also a Japanese artist Kyoko, who sings in Japanese, and is not known in the states.

How did you become a judge on Nigerian Idol? JD: Nigerian idol found out about me. In 2008 Shalimar attended The African American MTV Awards in Abuja, Nigeria. In 2010, we (Shalimar) came for a private wedding in London, did four shows, and then I booked a one-way flight back to Nigeria. I planned to stay in Nigeria for only two weeks but I ended up staying for three months. Tunde Babalola, my manager, knew that I had inspirations for working with African entertainers. He said that if I became a judge on the show, it would introduce me to the rest of the African people. So he connected me with executives of Idol. I must say that they were shocked to see me still in Nigeria as most stars just came and left. I am the first celebrity to visit and end up living here. What was your experience as a judge? JD: The show has ended now and I must say it was a good experience when I was on. Some people knew me as the guy from Shalamar and others called me the encouraging, compassionate judge on the show. Knowing so much about music and dance I was able to relate to all the young artist on the show. When I judged them, I always offered uplifting feedback and never used demeaning words. What new projects are you working? JD: I am building a social media network called First Culture that will be out soon. The network will be linked to my Facebook page. Since Africa was the first civili-

zation this will help expose Nigerian and African culture to the world. I am currently working on the virtual infrastructure. Thanks for taking the time to chat with us, Jeffrey. I’m excited to introduce you to those who may not have grown up with your music and to bring fans up to date. JD: Thank you so much for sharing the message of our generation with today’s generation. It’s publications like yours that keeps dance alive and in mainstream media and I am honored to be a part of what you are doing. My Personal Connection It is a great time for women in this country and all over the world as the Former United States Secretary of State, Hillary Rodham Clinton, is one of the Democratic presidential candidates for 2016. What’s so exciting is that finally, a woman could be the next President of the United States. The idea of a female President may be foreign to some, however, there are several women elected to this office globally. For instance, Prime Minister of Jamaica, Portia Simpson Miller, in office since 2012 ; elected in 2014, President Michelle Bachelet of Chile; Liberian President since 2006, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf and President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner of Argentina, elected in 2007. How proud the mothers, sisters, daughters and nieces must be of these women who are leading their countries. I can relate to how they must feel as my Aunt, Sylvia N. Camacho O’Mard, is a trailblazer making history on the beautiful island of Antigua and Barbuda. In 2009 she was the first female independent senator appointed and served until her resignation in 2014. Ironically, she was appointed by the first female to serve as Governor – General of Antigua and Barbuda (DeputyDame Yvonne Maginley). A graduate of the prestigious Pace University School of Law, New York (class of 1985), Sylvia is a former prosecutor with the Queens District Attorney’s office (ADA) in New York. After working in the DA’s office for a year, in 1987 she relocated back to her birthplace of Antigua and Barbuda where she later opened her own practice. As a private practitioner, she specialized in criminal, corporate and real estate law. I can talk about her all day because she has been and still is a strong female role model for me. The message I gleaned through her examples still rings true today- and that is; “Education, hard work, and persistence will create opportunities for women to be anything they want to be.”

BDF: Growing up, who were some of the female role models that shaped your life? Growing up on the island there were only two female lawyers on the island. One, in particular, was well known and was regarded as one of the best lawyers in Antigua. I always admired her. In fact, I appreciate her for her ability to survive on the island at a time when it was truly “a man’s world”. BDF: Are any of these women still around today?

108

No, but the one whom I cherish has left her mark on not only me but in Antigua and beyond. She was well respected and had to survive in a world where it seemed that only men were respected as lawyers.

BDF: Why then the change from criminal to corporate law? Practicing criminal law is extremely time-consuming in that you are constantly on call from your clients who, unfortunately, don’t always get arrested between the hours of 8 am to 5pm. Additionally, your time is further constrained by the availability of the court’s schedule. Further, my late husband and I decided to join a group of fellow Antiguans to open an indigenous bank on the island (subsequently, the bank has now closed). Working with the bank meant that I would be heavily invested time wise to ensure that the organization was successful. Eventually, I became the first female to be elected to the Board of Directors and thereafter the first and only female to chair to the Board of Directors.

112

I am a firm believer in these types of programs. Even though there is an increase in women-run businesses, women should capitalize on any assistance they can receive. Men did it.

BDF: Other than the beautiful beaches, what other attractions should travelers be interested in? We have a summer festival and Carnival during the month of July. This is the time we showcase our cultural heritage. Earlier in the year (March/April) we have one of the biggest sailing regattas where boats from all over the world (usually over 100 boats of various sizes) come to participate in races around the island and beyond. There is racing in the day and parties and concerts in the evenings where the visitors and locals get together and have a good time. Year round visitors can take a tour of our eco-tourism either by way of off terrain vehicles, or by zip lining or by hiking on foot. One thing I would recommend is that the visitor comes to enjoy our local cuisine which is so varied.

BDF: If you were not an attorney, what else would you do professionally? Without doubt an interior decorator or an event planner. I can see me doing both of these things in conjunction. BDF: I heard a rumor that you would love to be on Dancing with the Stars (DWTS)! If they called you tomorrow to be a contestant, what dance partner would you pick? Dear Jovette “Help me be debt free…”

114

Q&A A lot of people are afraid to tackle their finances when it comes to debt. Jovette will help you confront your debt! She and her husband David, have completed classes at Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University (FPU) and have given back to their community by teaching others what they’ve learned. Get ready to take notes and send any additional questions about becoming debt free to blaizedance@gmail.com.

My Mantra As the President of the Happy Club, Fitness Club, and the Breaking the Chains Club, I am on a mission to help and teach others to live a happy, healthy and debt free life. Unfortunately, we are living in a world that has lost faith, hope, and love. There are not too many people who actually believe this happy, healthy and debt free life can really exist and I am out to prove to the world that it does.

My Story In the fall of 2010, we started our debt free journey by attending Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University (FPU) class and then started teaching the classes in 2013 and 2014. I have read the majority of Dave’s (and his associates) books and they are awesome. I would encourage everyone to attend a class and to read his books.

115

Your Questions - My Answers Q. Which debt should I pay first? The high medical bills or the credit card debts with interest rates? Jovette: Great question. Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University (FPU) Step 2 is called the Debt Snowball and you put your debts in order from smallest to largest and pay them off regardless of interest rates.

Q. Is it premature to start saving for my retirement at 23? Where would I save my money for my retirement? Jovette: Ooh I WISH I started saving money for retirement when I was 23 years old. God bless you. Yes, yes, yes! I would recommend anyone over the age of 18 with a job to start saving for retirement. Go to www.daveramsey.com and click on "smartvestors." Fill in your zip code and they will get you started by providing SmartVestors (names of financial investment groups) in your area who can help you become a millionaire by the time you reach my age (40 plus). Just remember, allow nothing and no one to stop you from your goals.

Q. I am trying to improve my credit score and have paid my debts off in collections. However, they are still on my credit report. How can I get them removed? Jovette: If you are trying to improve your credit score then I am not the person for you sorry. I am on a mission to help people get rid of their credit scores. Having said that, if you have no debt then your score will eventually turn to zero within 6-12 months. All debt will be removed from your credit report, after paying them off, in that time frame.

Q. I am upside down in my car payments. Now that I have a new job and more money, how can I reverse this issue? Do I get a cheaper car? Can I modify my current plan with the finance company?

Jovette: Not too many companies modify your plan in order for you to sell the car and finance the remaining balance but it doesn't hurt to ask. Getting a cheaper car is always a great idea. It's only temporary and eventually you can purchase a more expensive vehicle when you have NO DEBT, which will allow you to pay cash. There are a couple of options you could do after you find out what the Kelley Blue Book says ( a guide that evaluates prices and determines the values for new cars and used cars) regarding the value of your car if you do a personal sale. After finding out this information, you have two options: • Sell the car, pay the difference off in cash, and buy a cheaper car. • Save your money until you have the difference in cash, and the cost of a cheaper car -then sell the car. Either option will work as long as you promise to never buy a brand new car ever again.

Q. What is the difference between good and bad debt? Jovette: Many people would disagree with me on this but there is nothing good about debt. If you don't have the money, then don't buy it. People try to rationalize and justify their bad behavior (overspending, not paying your bills) and this is why so many people are in debt. There is no good or bad debt because a debt is a debt is a debt, similarly, a sin is a sin is a sin. A little white lie is still a lie. When people make up their minds to never go into debt it frees them up to do such great things not only in their life but in the lives of others. I'm all about making a difference in other people's lives. How can the word SLOW help you become debt free? Remember this if nothing else.

Sacrifice now so that Later you have Options for a Wonderful life

Erika Williner

Finding that perfect accessory Finding the perfect accessory to go with your outfit can be a challenge. Wouldn’t it be nice to find a jewelry designer to create a one-of-kind statement piece for you? Designer, Erika Willner, of Erika Williner Designs is passionate about creating bracelets, necklaces, and earrings for the fashion forward women. Her designs can be worn at work, play or on the runway, and are made from the finest gemstones and pearls.

Here’s her story I read that you started your business because you could not find the right accessory for your outfit. Tell us a little about that? Erika: I consider myself a pretty demanding person when it comes to choosing my outfit and accessories, Some years ago, I was looking for the right piece for an outfit and couldn’t find it anywhere. That was when I decided to make it myself. Without any technique knowledge, but with a very specific knowledge of what I wanted, I bought some gemstones and made what I had in mind. After doing so, I not only realized I was actually enjoying creating the piece but I didn’t even have to go shopping for accessories anymore! I could make them myself.

What made you turn your passion into a business? Erika: Since I was enjoying creating pieces and wearing them, I started making pieces for my girlfriends, gave them away as birthday and holidays gifts. Some of my friends started commissioning pieces from me and would ask me to charge them for it. That’s when I realized I could turn my passion into a business and shortly thereafter, Erika Williner Designs was born (formerly known as Argentum Creations). Last year I decided to change the name for marketing purposes. Who was your first client and what was their response when you presented them with their costume piece? Erika: My first client was a dear friend of mine that requested a set of necklaces and bracelets to give away as birthday gifts. Her response was extraordinary; my friend was pleased as the person that she gave the gift to was delighted with the custom set. That piece was an amethyst, freshwater pearls necklace with matching bracelet. I was happy that my friend was satisfied with her purchase. I absolutely adore turquoise jewelry and see a lot of it in your portfolio. I must also add that you have combined that color with other bold colors like red. I love that! What are some of your favorite designs? Erika: I like bold statement pieces by nature, and it will be hard for me to pick some favorites, but I’ll try. The Lucia Necklace, the one you mentioned, is one of my favorite creations so far which is made out of mother of pearl, Swarovski crystals, and Czech seed beads. I have named it after my grandmother’s name since she used to love blue-purple irises and this necklace has a hint of that. This piece is exquisite as my grandma was. That baby will be always in my heart. Another of my favorite creations includes corals. There this one piece I created with beautiful red coral branches and a black ribbon that takes your breath away. Then there is a black coral piece with cow horn and black (at the beginning of the “asymmetric” design.)

Where does the inspiration for your designs come from? Erika: Inspiration usually comes late at night from materials like gemstones- found at different trade shows, antique shops, and bead shops. I’m also influenced by the European Haute Couture. I love some of their classic designers and usually, their new creations tend to influence some of my designs. Are there any new pieces that you are working on right now that is totally different from what you currently have in your line? Erika: Most definitely. I find myself evolving with technique and also in creativity. The great thing about this new collection is that you can build up or down the design. Each design has been handcrafted in a way that you can layer it to achieve a bold feel or keep it as simple as one strand. When designing a piece I picture it as a whole, but then I each strand is strung separately so that the client can create many pieces at once. The new collection will be introduced to the public during the 6th Haute Accessories Week Designers Runway Show on Saturday, September 10th in Tampa, Florida.

I am truly thankful for that and hope to be a part of this fabulous event from now on. I have had the pleasure of showcasing my pieces in my home By Constance Blaize-Shorter country, Argentina, in different editorials with amazing pro- Edits, Janet Samuel ductions. My pieces have been on the runway of Cars & Couture, Tampa Fashion Week, and at private events at Regions Building, City Center Building, and Kelly Reeds Boutique. In addition, my pieces were showcased online at be.dainty. boutique online. What pieces will you be showcasing at Haute Accessories Week 2016? Will there be a theme a new color? Erika: The new collection is very diverse. Vibrant red coral is definitely present, sparkly crystals, green agates, tassels and many tusks-bringing some African influence. What is your advice to women regarding turning your passion into profit? Erika: It is imperative to do the homework. While I was finishing my MBA at St. Leo University I was lucky enough to take a class where all we did was create business plans for companies. So alas, I created my business plan in class. Having all that research done and knowing the approximate cost and details that afforded me the opportunity to start a business. This made me realize that with passion and careful analysis this entrepreneurial activity was going to be viable. My hobby was going to become “the business”. Starting a business is extremely hard, but my advice is to never stop believing in what you do and whom you are. Finally, be patient because everything comes at the right time. Erika, describe your jewelry in a few words. Erika: Bold and unique, as all women are!

My beauty regimen consist of washing, moisturizing and quick application of make up. I really don’t have time to apply my makeup like the professionals, but I still want to accomplish a great look. So what are my go to items to make this happen? Take a look.

Fit Me Maybelline Exclusive translucent base and lightweight pigments allow skin's natural highs and lows to show through. Makeup Artist Brenda Michel recommends this product on her Facebook page and I have used it ever since. It goes on smooth with a dewy, yet semi-mat finish.

Mac Prep Prime Natural Radiance/Radiant Yellow A makeup primer that's specifically beneficial for oily and combination skin types. I love how Mac Prep Natural Radiance. Sometimes I don’t have time for foundations. Therefore, I just moisturize, add a pop of blush, lipstick and go!

Mac Concealer/ Pro Longwear Concealer A fluid concealer that provides medium to full matte coverage for up to 15 hours. When I want to add color to tired eyes that result in dark circles, I dab a little pro liner concealer that provides long lasting coverage.

Mac Extra Dimension Waterproof Mascara A mascara that enhances volume, extends the length, creates curl and stays put. I love the look of long lashes achieved by false eyelashes, but it takes me a while to apply it. However, with Extra Dimension, my lashes are long and full of body!

Nude lipstick Mac/ Koi Coral Cremesheen Lipstick A creamy lipstick infused with pearlized pigments and a moisturizing serum blend. This is my go-to lipstick that I wear by itself or mix with other colors to create a dual lipstick effect.
