01 THIRD DIMENSION OF DELIVERY 第三维度配送中心 - 建筑设计比赛

DRONE DELIVERY CENTRE COMPETITION | ARCHITALENT BY ARCHIDEX & PAM | 2ND PRIZE 2019

The emerging of e-commerce and delivery markets has lead me to think what will the future environment be? What is the next paradigm shift? Kuala Lumpur is the cultural, financial and economic centre of Malaysia. However, like most of the cities around the world, transportation and traffic congestion issues are getting worse day by day, A new building typology with comprehensive network is proposed to solve the current issues. The cross relation of e-commerce hub and delivery centre is being merged into one building. This prototype gathers both local and international e-commerce stores, franchises, small and medium enterprises and to provide warehouses for their products. The warehouse packaging system is also monitored by Artificial Intelligent robots which increases the efficiency of the whole process. After the packagin of the items is done, they are then being transferred to drone pods ready to be collected by drones and being delivered to their respective destination. The delivery centre has cut down the time taken for delivery as this bulding serves as both warehouse and delivery centre at the same time. Drone delivery service kills the issues of being stuck in traffic jam performed by conventional land vehicles.

SOCIAL REINTEGRATION CENTRE FOR EX-PRISONERS ACADEMIC | 2018 COMPETITION | PAM-ZSR ARCHITECTURE PRIZE 2019 | FINALIST

The project aims to help ex-prisoners to regain acceptance and respect from the society, "Instead of teaching ex-prisoners to be better, why not let the the society to understand." The idea is to design spaces for them to prove themselves, and at the same time, earn their own living, Ex-prisoners will be given opportunities to provide contribution consistently to the society at the centre, in return, the society will gradually accept them. The site is located at PJ SS2, on an under-utilized park. In the urban context, there is an increase in needs towards fitness due to urban fitness revolution. Why no we create a park that encourages ex-prisoners and society to mix together, creating a natural platform for them to meet, interact and understanding each other. Knowing each other while having fun speeds up the process of understanding each other. Sharing of skiils and knowledge also help building respect among each other. On the other hands, introduction of urban farming with market and food court provides job opportunities and learning field for ex-rpisoners. What is best is that they could collaborate or work with the local owner of food court and market. In Malaysia, all prisons are controlled prisons, where the prisoners are locked up in a enclosed place with controlled activities under heavy surveillance. Hence, The design intention is to create a 'reversed panopticon design', to have an open plan without any vertical walls where the public can see clearly what is happening within the centre.

WHY DOES THE SOCIETY NOT ACCEPT EX-PRISONERS?

HOW TO GET ACCEPTANCE AND RESPECT FROM THE SOCIETY?

INSTEAD OF JUST TEACHING EX-PRISONERS TO BE BETTER, WHY NOT HELP THE SOCIETY TO UNDERSTAND?

DESIGN SPACES TO PROVE THEMSELVES “Actions speak louder than words”. Ex-prisoners need opportunities to provide contribution to the society, so the society will gradually accept them. PROVIDE A PLATFORM WITH HELP FROM NGOS Help from NGOS and society to guide and train the ex-prisoners. Ex-prisoners have their own knowledge and skills to share and teach the public. Sharing and helping among both parties enhance their relationship.

OPEN PLAN - WALL-LESS

SITE ISSUE

DESIGN STRATEGY

In ground floor and first floor, which are the main activities spaces, there are almost no vertical obstruction, to allow visual connection to the contributions and daily activities of ex-prisoners as they are just as normal as us. Ground floor are designed in a way that the people could walk across our building as a shaded shortcut. It can be seen as an opportunity to bring people into the building to get a sense of place and understand the program.

SITE POTENTIAL

DESIGN STRATEGY

SITE SENSITIVITIES

DESIGN STRATEGY

Blending the ex-prisoners with the society doing exercise together, creating a platform for them to meet, interact and understand each others. Knowing each others while having fun speeds up the process of understanding each others. In the process of sharing skills and knowledge with each others also build up respect among themselves.

Introduction of urban farming provides job opportunities and learning field for the ex-prisoners. The plants harvested can be supplied directly to the market and food court below in the ground floor.

Introduction of market and food stall provides job opportunities for the ex-prisoners. They could collaborate with the local owners of food court and martket. They could even start their own business if they are capable. This program also helps increasing the interaction between them and the society, where trust will be slowly built among each others.

PRGRAM DESIGNED FOR EX-PRISONERS

SHARING TERRITORY

There are increasing needs towards fitness due to urban fitness revolution. Why not we create a park that encourage the ex-prisoners and society to mix together, teach and learn different types of exercise from each other. In the process, they motivate each other, share their mistakes and experience. With the flexible layout with different size of platforms, exercise can be done in seperated small groups or in collaborative big groups.

PANOPTICON CONCEPT

Panopticon Concept applied in most of the closed and controlled prison. The design of the prison is strategized to minimize privacy and visibility from the prisoners towards the surrounding, while maximizing the surveilliance from the guard tower. In social reintegration center, the concept is reversed.

REVERSE PANOPTICON

In contradictory with the concept of panopticon, light is drawed into the central public spaces, hence, the outer layer private living spaces above have strong visual connection towards the social activities and human behaviour happening on the central space.

COMPLETION OF SPACE CONTRIBUTED BY EX-PRISONERS

Biophilic design is challenged to be an important component that contribute to the users’ well-being. Planter structure allows contribution of ex-prisoners to do planting and provide shades to the communal eating place. The plants grows with the effort of ex-prisoners, which could be appreciated and praticipated by the community or public users.

03 SHAREABLE SPHERES OF LIFE 青年自愿服务中心

YOUTH VOLUNTEERING CENTRE ACADEMIC | 2018 COMPETITION | PAM-ZSR ARCHITECTURE PRIZE 2019 | WINNER

“ We make living by what we get, we make life by what we give. “ Volunteering offers vital help to people in need. It is a mutually rewarding system where both parties gain something from the experience. The project is located at Taman Medan, Petaling Jaya. It is a run-down park for the youths who live around the area to hang out and interact with each other. To provide more opportunity for the youth, performing arts is proposed as the main program of the building, where they could learn not only the performing skills, like dancing and singing, they could develop their leadership, communication skills, event organizing skills and photography skills. Therefore, it is crucial to provide them a learning environment that can maximize their learning efficiency. Speaking about a classroom, what do you think about the relationship between youth and a classroom nowadays? Will they feel interesting, fantastic, boring, or sleepy? The conventional layout of a classroom is square, forward-facing and with a clear front and strong hierarchy, where students are easily distracted and become bored. What if we break the hierarchy and move to a corner-less space, where teachers and students mix on a more equal basis. Both students and tutors could share their ideas anywhere in the classroom. Students share the tables in groups, tutors can easily circulate around the entire classroom, circular white board wraps up the space, so anyone can speak up their thoughts on the board in any point of the discussion or lessons. (encourage more interaction and sharing - collaborative learning)

MODULAR PODS

Numerous modular pods pooping up on the site, indicating the learning oppotunities for the youth.

COLLABORATIVE WALKWAY

These pods are then connected with collaborative walkway, intensifying the learning process among peers.

SHADED PARK

Parks are created and connected with each others, shaded by the building above.

ELEVATED PODS

To preserve the exising activities on site, these pods are elevated, keeping the ground floor open, letting the users circulate into the space easily.

04 RE:MARKET - COLLABORATIVE EXHIBITION DESIGN WITH HKDI 香港知专设计学院合作展览设计

DESIGN COLLABORATION BETWEEN UCSI, HKDI AND HK ARCHITECTS KUALA LUMPUR ARCHITECTURE FESTIVAL 2018

I was given an opportunity to be a representative designer from UCSI University, to design an annual exhibition in collaboration with architects from Hong Kong Design Institute for Kuala Lumpur Architecture Festival 2018 (KLAF). The material used for the exhibition was old reused timber panels that have been used for three exhibitions previously, each wioth different purpose and meaning, The old timber panels were redesign by adding some new elements in modular components, for the exhibited works to rest onto. Students were showcasing their market adaptive reuse projects in the exhibition. Hence, we come out with ideas rethinking and reintepreting the typologies, forms and culture of the markets in Malaysia and Hong Kong. Despite of their difference in the place and typology of the market, what they both have in common are the arrangement and modularity of the stalls and the circulations. We were inspired from these and developed the exhbition panels into modular components which are derived from the old reused timber panels and new timber stripes. Presentation boards and artworks are nailed on the vertical elements - timber panels and stripes, while the models are palced on the designated horizontal elements - timber platform for models. I am humbled and grateful of having this experience working together with designers from overseas, that we had a lot of fun and knowledge through the culture and experience exchange between both countries.

LIFE OF THE TIMBER PANELS

COLLABORATIVE EXHIBTION DESIGN WITH HKDI & ARCHITECTS

Reuse and transform the timber panels from pavilion project for several exhibitions

I was chosen to be a part of the design team to come out with a new exhibtion design for the annual Kuala Lumpur Architecture Festival 2017. Collaborating with Architects from Hong Kong and students from HKDI, to explore the design by reusing the leftover pieces of plywood panels from previous exhibition.

PROPOSAL 1

CHAPTER 1 : PUBLIC INTERVENTION PAVILION AT JALAN LOKE YEW

When the existence of underpass doesn’t serve its purpose, when nighbours from opposite parcel doesn’t greet with each other. The pavilion of “collage” was hence designed. The four parcels connected by underpass are like patches of collage waiting to be combined together to form something greater. The people from each parcel came from all sort of background, just like different sizes of the “collage”, but when they crossover each parcel, they would discover something new when the collage cross over and interlock with each other.

CHAPTER 2 : ROOFTOP EXHIBITION STUDIO EXHIBITION AT LIGHTCRAFT ROOFTOP

Pavilion is dismantled and re-assemble onto the rooftop for our studio exhibition. As each of the plywood panels came in isolated pieces, it allows varieties of possibilities of combination on the arrangements of the plywood panels. Each of the panels allow two boards to be fitted in, which is able to accomodate a large amount of student works.

CHAPTER 3 : KONGSI KL EXHIBITION EXHIBITION FOR SELECTED STUDENTS

The plywood panels are dismantled and relocated into a new place - Kongsi KL Exhibition Hall. For this exhibition, the panels are reconfigured into a new modular system, exploring more possibilities of exhibiting the works.

PROPOSAL 2 (FINAL DESIGN)

EXHIBITION DESIGN AT PUBLIKA

Re:Market Project Exhibition

The exhibited works are distributed into three different corridor, which are zone of Pudu, Old Klang Road(OKR), and Sentul. The experience of the users are like walking though market, visiting different stalls, viewing at different products. The modular components created are like the stalls, while the exhibited works are like the products.

05 WORKING EXPERIENCES + OTHER WORKS 工作经验与其它项目 SELECTED WORKS 2016-2020

SCAFFOLDING FOR EX-PRISONERS COLLAGE ART : REINTEPRETATION OF EX-PRISONERS’ BEHAVIOR This abstract art is reintepretated and translated from the studies of the challenges of ex-prsioners. Ex-prisoners are those recently released from prison. These people normally face difficulties to reintegrate into the society. In Malaysia, the closed and controlled concept of the prison have made them even further apart from the basic-know-how in the society. When they come out from prison, if only they have family and friends who help them, they can easily go back to normal life. However, for those who does not have social connection, the main challenge faced are the discrimination and prejudice from the society due to their criminal records. This influences their employment rate as they are difficult to be accepted by the society and some employers are fear of hiring them. This results in recidivism of the ex-prisoners as they think that they do not have any choice. They choose to re-commit crime in order to survive and they end of suiciding themselves, putting themselves back into the prison.

THE MANGROVE BEAST | 2ND PRIZE

UMF WORKSPACE DESIGN COMPETITION | ADAPTIVE REUSE Collaborating with a partner, we redesign an existing factory, transforming it into F&B and office spaces. Tracing back the history of the river beside the factory, it used to be dominated by mangrove swamp all along the riverbank. With the intense development and emerging of countless factories, most of the mangrove swamp were destroyed. The pollution resulted by the emission from those factories has mutated some mangrove and made them to parasitize on these factory. The concept of “The Mangrove Beast” hence comes up, where new spaces were formed within the rigid squarish factory. Human dwells in the stomach of this beast and starts adapting to these spaces and occupy it with their own creative ways.
