SAC Chariman’s message

Principal’s Message

Juying Secondary School is now into its 18th year and as the founding Chairman of the School Advisory Committee, I am proud to see how the school has grown under the leadership of three principals and I am pleased to welcome Mr Seet Tiat Hee as the fourth principal of Juying Secondary School.

I am honoured to be appointed by the Ministry of Education as the 4th Principal of Juying Secondary School, and I am grateful to Mr Abdul Harris for his leadership over the last 8 years, especially the efforts put in to oversee the PRIME (Programme for Rebuilding and IMproving Existing Schools) project to give JYians a new and conducive learning environment.

Serving the education service for about 20 years, Mr Seet was the Vice-Principal of Raffles Institution (2001 - 2005) and the Principal of West Spring Secondary (2006 – 2011). His varied experiences allow Juying Secondary to benefit from the infusion of fresh perspectives and enable him to share best practices in support of ‘Every School, A Good School’. I am confident that Mr Seet will be able to harness and develop existing talent, to build on the school’s strengths and bring Juying Secondary from good to great. Juying Secondary School is the hanyu pinyin name of “聚英”, which means “聚集英才” or “penghimpunan bakat-bakat” in Malay – the gathering of talents. I can still remember the initial years when Juying was without a permanent home and the emphasis back then was on setting up working systems that were effective and clear to the staff. Teachers strived to build up instructional programmes that catered to the students’ abilities and to add value to their academic achievements and talents development. This was strongly supported by strict discipline and a responsive pastoral care programme.

2013 was a fruitful year in which I had the opportunity to work closely with all the Juying stakeholders. The staff of Juying Secondary is a very special group of collegial and enthusiastic educators who strive to do their best for JYians. Together we have done a whole-school re-envisioning exercise to chart the new directions from 2013 to 2018. The new I3-mission tagline “Inspiring Learning, Inculcating Values, Impacting Lives” is our shared aspiration to remind all of us to prepare JYians to be future-ready by inculcating in them the R3IGHT values and inspiring them to have a passion for learning so that they can become useful citizens. Our R3IGHT values stand for Respect, Responsibility, Resilience, Integrity, Graciousness, Humility and Teamwork – values that we believe will give JYians an edge in the future. Our school also subscribes strongly to an ethos of H.E.A.R.T.S. in which every staff sets High expectations and standards, places strong Emphasis on learning; has the Autonomy to explore and innovate, builds quality Relationships, embraces Trust and Teamworkcollaboration, has a Shared purpose, and forms the school culture of Care and Learning.

Today, with the strong support from the Ministry of Education and fellow members of the School Advisory Committee, not only is Juying equipped with a newly furbished school building with excellent facilities, it is also infused with a strong culture of learning - the belief that every student is unique and every student can learn - and the special programmes seek to provide a holistic education. Witnessing this dedication to helping our students learn is immensely satisfying and I am confident that Juying will continue to grow from strength to strength.

Our school has done well in both the academic and non-academic areas, obtaining the Academic Value-Added Normal (Bronze) Award in the 2012 GCE O Level Examination, one distinction award, two accomplishment awards and one commendation award at the 2013 Singapore Youth Festival Arts presentation. All these achievements are testimonies to the unending work of the teachers and the strong support given by the School Advisory Committee and the Juying Parents’ Support Group members who have forged excellent partnerships with the school over the years.

I am proud to be part of the team that makes a difference in our students’ educational experience. With the continued effort from the school leaders, staff, students, parents and the community, I am confident that Juying will grow from strength to strength, and scale greater heights.

I hope to add value to Juying Secondary by building on the existing strengths of the school and further strengthening it with best practices that we could adapt, leveraging my past experiences as a school leader to bring Juying into the future as we scale the next peak of excellence. I take this opportunity to thank all our stakeholders and together we strive to achieve our vision of “a gracious community of life-long learners with strength of character”.

Speech & Prize Giving Day

Principal’s Address

18th Annual Speech Day, 28 March 2013

by mr seet tiat hee

Mr Abdul Harris Bin Sumardi, our Guest-of-Honour Mr Jimmy Tan, Member of the School Advisory Committee Mr Thomas Loh, Chairman, Parents Support Group Parents, Teachers, and Students Good afternoon to one and all. We are very happy to have Mr Abdul Harris Bin Sumardi, current Principal of Balestier Hill Secondary and 3rd Principal of Juying Secondary, to be back with us this afternoon to present prizes to our Award winners. I am delighted to be appointed as the 4th Principal of Juying Secondary School with effect from 15 December 2012, taking over the leadership baton from Mr Harris, and inheriting from him a brand new segment of the school compound. I would like to put on record my thanks to Mr Harris for overseeing the PRIME project — also known as Programme for Rebuilding and IMproving Existing schools. Mr Harris has worked closely with the architect over the last few years to ensure that Juying Secondary is well equipped with modern and upgraded facilities such as the Dance Studio with floor to ceiling glass windows, overlooking the parade square, an Indoor Sports Hall, a synthetic Soccer Field, newly furnished IT Resource Rooms, and this re-furbished Multi-Purpose Hall, just to name a few. Before I present the 2012 School Report, please allow me to share with all some of my thoughts and findings about Juying Secondary. Over the last three months that I was here, I spent time dialoguing with staff and students, got myself immersed in school activities to feel the heartbeats, better understand and appreciate the history and culture of the school. To me, history is important as it tells a story – It helps us appreciate the past, embrace the present and look forward to the future. Juying, as I understand it to be, is the hanyu pinyin of the Chinese characters “聚英”which means “聚 集英才” or “penghimpunan bakat-bakat” in malay – the gathering of heroes (or talents). That is why the word “Heroes” was featured prominently in the school anthem. It goes very well with my personal belief that every JYian is unique and each has his/ her own talents waiting to be discovered, nurtured and developed to the best of his/her ability. One of our pioneer staff, Mr Ko Kok Kheong, unearthed some of the treasures left behind by Juying’s Founding Principal, Mrs Lee Yin Ling and 2nd Principal, Ms Grace Ng which I thought have some significance to the history and culture of the school.

30

Mrs Lee who is also a member of our School Advisory Committee, has created a very meaningful Spring couplet “聚首欢欣迎新岁, 英贤齐心树学风” using the Chinese characters of the school with the aspiration to create a conducive and positive learning environment for JYians to scale greater heights in their academic pursuits. This was one of the few things I have read and explained to all JYians in the Lunar New Year recorded greetings this year. Similarly, our 2nd Principal Ms Grace Ng, put up this famous and very meaningful Confucian saying “修身、齐家、治国、平天下” in the old school hall, which literally means a man is to perfect himself first, then get his family in order before guiding or governing his country in the right course, and bringing peace to the world. It was taken from the book of The Great Learning, one of the Confucian classics. It is meant to inspire the JYian to first perfect himself by cultivating and acquiring values/ virtues such as love, benevolence, humanity, kindness, courtesy, magnanimity, good faith, diligence, loyalty, reciprocity, and adhering to the golden mean, that is, not doing to others what one would not want done to oneself. I understand that Mr Harris has also left a pair of treasures behind – a sculpture entitled “Grace & Humility” which will be re-installed next to the sunken plaza in due course. This sculpture was first created by our ex-Art Teacher, Mr Sazali, during the time when Mr Harris was the principal. Mr Harris has shared with me that the sculpture epitomises the values that he wishes JYians to inculcate – grace, humility and excellence. So let us thank Mr Harris and all the past Principals for their leadership, thoughtfulness and commitment to Juying Secondary. Ever since Education Minister Mr Heng Swee Keat shared his belief last year that every school is a good school, there have been many conversations and discussions on the ground about what makes a good school. Indeed every school is a good school. And what makes Juying a Good School? Well, a good school is one that nurtures its students to be engaged learners – in both domains of academic and character development. A good school ensures 31

all students acquire strong fundamentals of literacy and numeracy and develops them holistically, in character, knowledge and critical competencies. In the recent 2012 GCE O levels, the school achieves Value-added results for the Sec 5 Normal Academic cohort. The results of 10 out of 11 subjects were within or above expectation.

programmes/workshops that will help the parents in guiding and developing their child.

In the sports arena, our ‘C’ division Football team has qualified for Round 2 to vie for the top 4 placings in the West zone. I also wish them all the best in their coming matches.

For the express cohort, 7 out of 11 subjects performed within expectation. Outstanding results were achieved for the GCE NT Levels examinations. 7 out of 9 subjects were either better than or close to the National Averages. And we have 7 students achieving at least 3As. The best set of NT results in recent years.

Offering the students rich and experiential learning are the school’s Outdoor Education (OE) programmes which leverage on the outdoors to develop students’ character and student leadership skills. I have seen the student leaders in action, planning and leading the school’s camps from Secondary 1 to 3. I must say that they have certainly done a very good job – I have been most impressed by their level of confidence and leadership skills.

We collaborate with the National Environment Agency, the Nanyang CC, Southwest CDC and Lions Befrienders for our Values-in-Action (VIA) projects. These collaborative VIA projects provide our students the opportunity to serve and contribute back to the society. Under the 2012 Green Schools @ South West programme organised by Southwest CDC, our Green Club has helped the school clinch a Silver award.

For the character development domain, the school leverages on the various platforms such as Outdoor Education, CCA, Aesthetics programmes and Values-In-Action Programme. In fact, the school has been awarded the Character Development Award since 2011 in recognition of its efforts in developing character, namely the structures and processes which are in place in the school for character development. In recognition of the school’s good arts practices and programmes, the school was conferred the National Arts Education Award (Spark

I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate Mr Ko Kok Kheong for being awarded the Excellent Service Award 2012 by Spring Singapore. Mr Ko is our Technical Workshop Instructor who has very often gone beyond his scope of work to take on various tasks or projects assigned by the school. He is also very patient and caring in helping out our students in their D&T projects. Always serving with a smile and always very helpful, Mr Ko is indeed well deserving of the Excellent Service Award. We will also be presenting the Long Service Awards to the following teachers for serving the school faithfully for 5 and 10 years - Ms Nurul Suhana, Ms Francesca Chan and Mdm Nyai Diyana Kartini. On behalf of the school, I would like to thank these teachers who have dedicated a good number of

years in educating our students and making a difference in their lives.

A good school enables its staff to be caring and competent educators. To develop their competency, our teachers attend workshops, go on learning journeys and visit other schools with best practices. They also engage in professional learning teams in which they collaborate to explore how to promote effective learning in the classroom. New and Beginning Teachers who join the school go through a structured mentoring programme to help them learn and grow to be competent teachers. Today I would like to take this opportunity to recognise some of the staff for their valuable contribution to the school.

There are still areas that we as a school can work on to bring about better outcomes for students’ holistic development. I am confident that in years to come, we will take Juying Secondary to greater heights — only because we have a team of dedicated and committed teachers who share a common belief that every JYian is Special, every JYian matters and every JYian can learn.

The school’s Hip Hop Dance Crew has consistently performed well in both local and overseas competitions since its inception. At the 2012 World Hip Hop Dance Championship held in Las Vegas, our school, representing Singapore in the Varsity category, came in 5th. They have recently qualified for the finals of the 2013 Danceworks! organised by the CNB which will be held on 6 April at the Ngee Ann City Civic Plaza. I would like to take this opportunity to encourage all our performing groups who will be taking part in the upcoming SYF Arts presentation. They have been working very hard – both students and teachers, and I wish them all the very best for the event. For the Uniformed Group CCA, our uniformed groups – both NCC and NCDCC have achieved Bronze for 2012. Our IT Media Club, which has consistently been performing well in competitions such as the Picomouse and Solar Car competitions, has once 32

At this juncture, I would like to highlight our exJYian, Muhd Irfan Afifi who exemplifies a student who is balanced in both academic and character development domains. Afifi is currently a student of Innova JC. He achieved 3 distinctions at the GCE O Levels last year. He was also given the Edusave Character Award last year. When he was in Juying, he was also a very active OE Leader and was the Warrant Officer of NCDCC. He continued to do

Our collaboration with external organisations also extends to overseas. We work with overseas schools and overseas organisations for our twinning or exchange programmes as well as our overseas VIA projects. This year, we have played host to a group of Chinese students from Dalian and will be expecting a visit by the students from Sabah College. Our Tourism Club students will be facilitating and leading a local tour for the group of visitors. At the end of this year, our NT students are planning to go to Nepal for an overseas VIA project while our Cultural Dance group will be going to Thailand for a learning project. All these opportunities provide our students the opportunity to raise their global

Committee which manages student-related matters such as discipline and attendance. Another group of caring educators who received the OCA under the Group category is the group of Allied Educators. This group of AEDs give valuable support to the teachers and school – be it counselling for students, CCA and running of the school’s Normal Technical programmes.

Juying proud when he became the Best Trainee in the recent 8th Cadet Lieutenant Course conducted in December 2012. Afifi was specially featured in the NCDCC magazine, RHINO. You can’t really see him clearly here but you will get a better look at him when he comes up to receive a Special Award later on. Now, I believe Afifi will agree with me that Juying has nurtured him well, providing him with the opportunities for him to learn and grow. We wish him all the best and trust that he will continue to do the school proud. Well done, Afifi! A good school has the support of parents and the community, working together to bring out the best in our students. This year we have started forming our first committee under the Juying Parents Support Group (JPSG). In fact the newly appointed chairman of the JPSG, Mr Thomas Loh, is here with us today. May I invite Mr Loh to stand ? I am very pleased that the members of the JPSG committee are very supportive and enthusiastic in wanting to support the school in various ways. The school will be working closely together with the committee in exploring ways of reaching out to as many parents as possible, and arranging for

Teachers and EAS recognised for their contribution were nominated for the MOE 2012 Outstanding Contribution Award. The teachers, Ms Corinne Yu and Ms Lau Jia Yun and the OM, Mr Chong Kim, were nominated by the staff for the OCA under the individual category. Mr Chong Kim incidentally also received the Efficiency Award under the National Day Awards 2012. Nominated for the OCA under the Group category were the Student Development

Finally, I would like to congratulate all prize winners. I hope you will continue to strive to do your very best to achieve greater outcomes. As part of the gracious JYian community of lifelong learners of strong moral integrity, you will continue to bring glory to the school and your parents and be good and useful citizens of Singapore. Last but not least, I would like to thank the Speech Day Committee headed by Mr Michael Low, HOD/ EL as well as all guests, staff and students for making today’s event a meaningful and memorable one for all of us. Thank you.

The department has been active in promoting the ‘Speak Good English Movement’ or SGEM in order to realise its vision. In early Term 1, the department outlined its whole-school approach to speaking good English (WSAE) which involves both students and staff to actively use standard English to communicate with one another. Some of the activities that were planned and implemented are: •

Extensive Reading Programme (ERP) in the morning for the staff and students. Uninterrupted silent reading of fiction books on Monday and Tuesday and English newspaper on Thursday, was implemented during the morning assembly period. Friday was devoted to journal writing for Thought of the Month (TOTM).

EL teachers involved all students in book/newspaper review during EL lessons once a fortnight. The review was formally done on a book/ newspaper review form and checked by the EL teachers.

Student representatives from every class shared an interesting read during morning assemby every Thursday. In Term 3, the sharing took a slightly different approach based on the life story of Singapore’s former President, Mr S R Nathan.

Vision Every JYian an effective communicator using Standard English

Mission To achieve value-added results by equipping JYians with lifelong learning skills and values

38

An SGEM broadcast of upcoming school activities and events using recorded voices of staff and students was played during the morning assembly at the beginning of every term to publicise upcoming major school and national events such as Total Defence Day and International Friendship Day. Library visits were conducted during EL periods for all classes to encourage students to select and borrow books with the aim of encouraging them to read and increase their level of language competencies. Certificates were awarded to classes with the highest rate of book loan from the Library.

In addition, the EL department also collaborated actively with various other departments to engage the teachers and students in teaching and learning. One notable project is the collboration with the Science department on a WebQuest project in July this year.

Last November, the EL department, together with various other departments, set up booths in the school to share English Language games and fun activities with Primary 6 students from the West 3 cluster primary schools such as Juying Primary and Xingnan Primary School, among others.

The TOTM reflection through journal writing by all JYians was a collaborative effort between the EL and CCE departments.

The students have benefited from the enrichment activities by applying what they have learnt from the real world to classroom learning which is in line with the school’s approach to REAL or Reflective, Experiential and Active Learning. They are given a lot of opportunities to share on their learning experiences with classmates during class activities and at school assemblies.

Objectives: •

To equip students with mother tongue proficiency in four main aspects; listening, speaking, reading and writing

To develop students’ spoken and written competence in mother tongue languages

To further develop students’ appreciation toward their mother tongue languages and culture

The Mother Tongue Language (MTL) teachers are passionate in encouraging our students to love our MTL and promote them as living languages. We are constantly driven to nurture interest amongst our students and help them grow in their linguistic capability. MTL teachers consistently explore ways of engaging students in their learning through various ITC-based lessons. With the rolling out of iMTL Portal by MOE, we hope to enhance the students’ MTL proficiency through this online interactive platform.

Vision A community of achievers and upholders of values and cultures

Mission To propagate the mother tongue languages and cultures and to instil traditional values in our students

The MT Intensive Programme for the graduating classes has been implemented for the past eight years. The objectives of this programme are to guide our students to perform well and to monitor their overall performance as well as to facilitate in their preparation for the national examinations. Through the MT Fortnight Programme, our students are given vast opportunities to experience their rich cultures and vibrancy of their MTLs through various cultural and language workshops. These include the Heritage Trail, Calligraphy Workshop, Tea Session in Chinatown and Drama Workshop. Written by: Mdm Maslinni Bte Abdul Malik, HOD MT 39

The vision of the Science Department guides the teaching and learning of science in the school. The science teachers want to develop in our students the qualities of a scientist such as integrity, resilience, responsibility and objectivity.

In line with the school’s strategic directions, the Mathematics Department adopted the ‘7 Guiding Principles for Teaching and Learning’. Considerations were made in lesson planning to

Science teachers in their effort to explain scientific concepts for the students, make extensive use of computer simulations, classroom demonstrations, hands-on activities and tapping on resources of the Singapore Science Centre. Teachers monitor the learning of their students closely and conduct Focus Group Clinic for students who need more time to learn.

7. provide opportunites for self-directed learning and reflection. (adapted from How Learning Works by Ambrose, Bridges, DiPietro, Lovette, Norman). All teachers in JYSS are trained in Socratic questioning techniques as a tool to develop our students to think critically. These skills enable teachers to lead students to explore, investigate and find answers to mathematical problems . Math teachers collaborated with one another and have developed activitybased resources to increase engagement and enhance learning. A professional learning community of math teachers got together to develop an ICT portal with a number of interesting resources on Geometry. Teachers use ICT tools to help students understand mathematical concepts through visualisations. Students were able to explore and extend their learning more easily via the e-learning platform provided by the school. Secondary One students participated in a webquest which involved research and the making of an aircraft model (a collaboration with the Craft and Technology department). Students had the opportunity to discuss and present their projects as they concurrently learnt concepts like scale factor, ratio and speed. Written by: Norhafiani Abdul Majid, HOD Mathematics

In order to enthuse and motivate our students, the department purchased Questa Club Activity Cards for all the lower secondary students. Questa symbolises the never-ending quest for knowledge which is a scientist’s outstanding feature. The department aligns all its activities to Questa and this motivates the students to do well in the activities and earn points to obtain silver and gold Questa badges. Students are encouraged to take part in science competitions organised by external organisations. This year our Secondary 2 Express students came up tops in the W3 Science Olympiad organised by Westwood Secondary School. Our students also participated in the Ignite Science Challenge organised by ITE College East. Science teachers attend workshops, seminars and courses regularly to refresh their pedagogical content knowledge which empowers teachers to engage students of all abilities. The department also purchases new equipment on a regular basis so that teachers have access to the best equipment to engage every student. In Juying we have the abiding belief that through a deeper understanding of science, our students widen their world view which will stand them in good stead through life. Craft & Technology

Humanities LONG TERM GOALS 1. To promote a culture of thinking actively and creatively amongst staff and pupils 2. To nurture JYians who are loyal to the school and country, honest, gracious, caring and persevering, with strong leadership qualities 3. To build a highly competent and committed teaching fraternity 4. To achieve Silver Award for Express and Gold Award for NA for valueadded results Teachers in the department are committed to organising Learning Journeys for our JYians to enrich the learning of Humanities. We strongly believe in learning beyond the classroom. Indeed, there are also no boundaries to our Learning Journeys as we do bring our classrooms globally, to countries like Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Hong Kong and China. Highlight of Humanities Department 2013 2013 was an exciting year for Humanities Department. The department was involved in NE events, such as the Mobile Exhibition by Internal Security Department Heritage Centre (ISDHC) as well as various enrichment activities such as learning journey to the Ancient Civilisation Museum and Jurong Lake Park. Teachers also shared their best practices to other schools and prepared students for external competitions.

The department adopts the Reflective Experiential Active Learning (REAL) approach in the teaching of Design and Technology(D&T), Food and Nutrition (F&N) and Art, and uses innovative teaching strategies for effective teaching and learning. Students go through experiential learning by working in both indoor and outdoor settings and by incorporating their designing, artistic and culinary skills into real life cultural events.

Singapore Land Authority - Singapore Geospatial Challenge 2013 3 teams of 10 humanities students from 3E1 and 3A1 represented Juying Secondary School to compete in the inaugural Singapore Geospatial Challenge 2013. Among them were 2 history and 8 Geography students. Design and Technology The D&T department believes in the vision “Every JYian a Designer”. JYians were taken to the Nanyang Central Market where they observed and interacted with stall owners to uncover some of the problems the stall owners faced. They brought back the problems and brainstormed together as a class to come out with plausible solutions. They then designed and made models of the final solution with regards to the problems identified. Secondary 2 students were involved in a JYian solar car competition where they designed and built a solar car using recycled materials. Through this competition, they learnt about sustainability and loving the Earth. They designed their vehicles using recyclable materials and tapped on natural resources such as solar energy to power them. JYians showcased their innovative ideas at the national level when they participated in competitions such as the Toy Design Competition 2012 organised by the polytechnics during which one of our teams was awarded the Merit Award. JYians embraced the use of digital media to produce a digital portfolio at the end of their design journey. Softwares such as SolidWorks were used in the designing process such as exploration of ideas through combinations of basic shapes and forms and contextualising their designs to the real life environment.

Art The Art Department aims to nurture students to become creative and versatile visual thinkers. Every student will be offered a fair amount of creative experiential activities in their four to five years of holistic education in Juying Secondary School. The Art Department creates a framework that sees every student experience a minimum of two years of Foundational Studies in Art and Craft. Students who wish to pursue Art at N and O levels are given a good platform to realise their artistic capabilities for another two to three years and turn it into an opportunity to pursue higher art learning in a tertiary institution. Art learning is customised according to the different abilities of students. A variety of art processes, creative thinking skills and media are provided for students to be creatively engaged and have fun while learning through discovery and working in groups. Students go through creative experiential learning by working in both indoor and outdoor settings and apply their skills and talent in art competitions and school art events. Art learning includes art awareness by exposing students to public art exhibitions, art school Open Houses and visiting art museums. The Art department believes that every JYian has a talent within. Food and Nutrition The Home Economics Department aims to equip students with important nutritional knowledge that will help them lead a healthier lifestyle. With a healthy mind and body, students will excel in their area of interest. To expose the students to the culinary world, a group of students from Secondary 3NA and 3E took part in the Lam Soon Salad-Making Competition. In addition, our department organised visits to NTUC Fairprice Extra to make learning fun and meaningful. Secondary 3NA F&N students had the opportunity to learn and see the variety of foods products available. As part of their F&N project they produced a video recording of their experiential learning at NTUC making use of their IT skills. 43

Information Communication Technology

Vision

ICT Programmes The ICT Department harnesses technology to provide an enriching learning experience for all JYians. We aim to build a pervasive culture of promoting the effective use of ICT into the school curriculum to enhance pedagogy that engages collaboration and self-directed learning. In order to maximise learning , the following programmes are being implemented: •

E–Learning

The e-learning day on 15th of March in Term 1 promoted independent learning during which students took on selfdirected and collaborative learning. The exercise also served to simulate a situation in case of school closure due to emergency situations. Lessons and homework, in the form of e-lessons, e-tutorials and e-assessments, were assigned to students who stayed at home to complete the tasks. The use of the portal helped to facilitate self-paced mastery. The online forum spurred students’ learning when teachers provided feedback.

Webquest and Coursework

All Secondary 1 and 2 students were involved in Webquest or Coursework (CPA) in Term 3. These are tools which integrate technology into the curriculum to develop 21st century skills.

44

The Webquest on the air glider for the Sec 1E/NA students was a collaborative effort. During Mathematics lessons, the students analysed and calculated the appropriate weight, surface area and appropriate ratio to maximise the traveling distance of the air glider. Meanwhile, the D and T teachers engaged the students via designing and realisation of the air glider. Competencies such as global environmental awareness were also reinforced. Active learning was evident when the students communicated their thoughts in eForums and explored new open tools online to present their reports.

Normal (Technical) Programme

Empowering learners, engaging minds and enriching experiences through ICT to develop independent learners. Objectives: •

IT Enrichment Programme (ITP)

To meet the required ICT baseline standards, all lower secondary students underwent a compulsory ICT Enrichement Programme which was incorporated into curriculum time. The ITP comprises the working tools of Microsoft Words and Excel as well as media literacy in presentation and communication skills for the Secondary Ones. The Secondary One students used Microsoft Office to prepare a script and powerpoint presentation. Leveraging on ipads, they produced an oral/video podcast.

To further broaden their media production experience, the Secondary Two students were trained in the use of the Media Studio facilities and introduced to iMovie in our iMac Lab. They were expected to submit a project based on a theme from their IP subjects areas.

To develop N(T) students’ character

To achieve academic excellence

To immerse students in the real and experiential learning approach

Secondary One N(T) Programme IT skills such as photography and photo-editing were introduced under the guidance of Mr Chen Guo Wei in Semester One. Oral presentation skills and cross stitching techniques were part of the programme in Semester Two.

Vision

Empowering the Normal (Technical) student for success

Secondary Two N(T) Programme Videography and cooking were introduced under the guidance of Mr Chen Guo Wei in Semester One. A fusible beads project was undertaken in Semester Two which culminated in the final products being sold during Teachers’ Day. The funds raised went to the school’s Financial Assistance Scheme(FAS).

Learning Platform

Secondary Three N(T) Programme

The ICT department has initiated the use of iPads to promote self-directed learning. Learning journeys became more adventurous with the use of QR codes. On another front, the Learning Management System (LMS) served as a common platform for all communication and evaluation. The LMS allows effective communication between teachers and students.

Students either took the Hospitality and Tourism Module or the Photography Module in Semester One. In Semester Two, they completed either the Culinary module or the Hair-styling module. The hair-styling students also took time to go to an Elder Care Centre in Bukit Batok to help cut the senior residents hair for free.

Through the use of technology, we hope to maximise every learning opportunity by keeping abreast of technology while being student centred in our teaching approaches.

Secondary Four N(T) Programme As there was only one class in this level, they all did the Small Business Operations Module in Semester One. This culminated in a showcase as well as a sale. The products sold again increased the coffer of the school’s FAS fund. In Semester Two , the N(T) Programme lessons were taken over by the Mathematics and English Departments so as to fully prepare for the N Level Examination. Achieving character excellence To develop character and citizenship values, knowledge, skills and competencies

Secondary One Orientation and Installation

outdoor education programme teambuilding camp OBJECTIVES: To provide a platform for Sec One students to • experience the importance of respecting self, others and environment through team-bonding activities. • promote an environment of cooperation and collaboration • learn the skills required for effective teamwork • have an awareness of right and wrong To provide a platform for Sec 4 leaders to obtain a first-hand experience in organising and running a school camp The theme for this year’s Secondary One Teambuilding Camp was “Individually, we are one drop. Together, we are an ocean.” by Ryunosuke Satoro. This quote illustrates the power of unity and strength in numbers. Preparation for the camp began in early November 2012. A group of 33 Secondary Four prefects held numerous discussions and dry runs during their end-of-year holidays. This experience of organising and leading a camp enabled the student leaders to learn more about themselves and their fellow leaders. There were also ample opportunities for the leaders to voice out their opinions and disagreements to come to a consensus in camp matters. Most importantly, as the leaders worked together, they learnt to respect different opinions and working styles.

The school organised an in-house orientation for the Secondary One students on the 2nd and 3rd January 2013. The Orientation package included a workshop on Coping with Secondary School Life which aimed to ease the transition into secondary school. The students also participated in a series of informative talks by key personnel of the school. They were also given time to interact with their form teachers and their new classmates. In addition, the students were treated to performances by the Juying Performing Arts Group — the Symphonic Band, Choir and Dance, as well as CCA promotion and recruitment. In line with the JYian tradition, the Secondary One students were formally embraced by the JYian family during the Installation Ceremony on 11th January 2013, the second day of Secondary One Teambuilding Camp. During the ceremony, every student was presented with a starfish collar pin by their Form Teacher — an act of symbolising the school’s belief that every JYian is a resilient star and its commitment to bring out the best in every JYian. The Orientation and Installation Ceremony succeeded in making the students understand the school’s culture, feel welcomed and in assuring parents that their children are in good hands.

The 3-day-2 night camp was held from the 10th to the 12th January this year. Throughout the camp, 209 Secondary One students went through a funfilled and meaningful experience, led and facilitated by our own leaders. The participants experienced an Amazing Race in West Coast park which requires them to work as a team for the various stations. The highlight of the camp, the awesome campfire, was led by the leaders with entertaining performances from each group. During the campfire, we witnessed the heart-warming support from parents who offered their help in AV/PA and the camp fire. During the camp and in between activities, the value of Respect was emphasised. Participants learnt how to respect themselves, their teammates and also the environment. The theme-based activities also provided them with opportunities to manage their differences and agree on a viable solution. The camp would not have been possible without the hard work put in by the leaders, the Secondary One participants spontaneously participating in the activities and last but not least, the teachers who were always around to guide and facilitate the discussions. Together We Will Succeed! Written by: Written by Miss Ong Xian Qing, Camp Commandant

Reflections: Respect: We don’t have to be shy when we are with peers. Just introduce yourself and get to know more about that person. Besides having a good time with my classmates, I learnt to respect teachers when they are talking to us. Responsibility: I learnt not be careless with my things. Also, when we were discussing a topic, we should listen to everybody’s opinion. Resilience: Tell the truth even if you are at fault.

Outdoor Educaton Programme Secondary Two Adventure Camp

Outdoor Educaton Programme Secondary Three Overseas Learning Camp Secondary Three Camp : Gunung Angsi Expedition 9 to 12 January Theme: A single leaf alone provies no shade Leadership Modules:

Dairy Farm Adventure Centre, 10th to 12th January 2013 “Victory has a thousand fathers, but defeat is an orphan.” – John F. Kennedy The motto of the camp illustrated the key objectives of this year’s Secondary Two Adventure Camp. Driven by the value of RESPONSIBILITY, we sought to let the Secondary 2 students experience the importance of responsibility for personal choices, well-being and decision which may impact self, others and environment. We hoped that JYians could be responsible for every action they took, and that they learned not just to claim credit for victories, but also take responsibility for defeats. Indeed, the camp offered many opportunities for such learning. Teambuilding games challenged the groups to work together towards common goals. The Nightwalk and High Elements built self-confidence and challenged individuals to step out of their comfort zones. These were just some activities planned to provide the platform for the campers to learn. However, not all learning can be planned for. Some are spontaneous yet impactful.

One such episode certainly left its mark on the campers. The use of handphones was not allowed during the camp as they were unnecessary distractions. Not everyone abided by it, and some even blatantly broke the rules. These campers were warned and given chances to own up, but none did. Their decision ultimately led to everyone being punished and some missing out on the High Elements activities. Despite missing out on these activities, the campers certainly learned something, especially the group who broke the rules. Having short-changed their friends due to their own personal choice to break the rules, most of them reflected and eventually understood just how important it was to take responsibility for their own actions, as these actions not only impacted themselves but the people around them. These learning points undoubtedly made missing the fun and challenges of the high elements worthwhile. More importantly, we hoped the learning stays with them for many years ahead. Model the way

Inspire a shared vision

Challenge the process

Enable others to act

Encourage the heart

JYians look forward to their TALL camps at the beginning of the year and this year saw an even more enthusiastic bunch of Secondary 3 campers gearing up for the Gunung Angsi Expedition! What set the Secondary Three Camp apart from the rest was that it was completely planned and executed by a dedicated bunch of Outdoor Education (OE) leaders! Under the guidance of the OE teachers, the group of 20 student leaders had gone on a recce trip in November 2012 to plan the programme and delegate responsibilities. This year’s camp saw all five Secondary Three classes hiking up Gunung Angsi in Negri Sembilan. For many, it was their first time making their way up an 825-metre mountain. For others, it was their first time venturing across the border. All JYians – both student and teacher – were pushed beyond their comfort levels. It was indeed an uplifting experience as every JYian proved that they could display resilience and perseverance in the face of adversity. Our campers benefitted from a uniquely-JYian Leadership Module crafted and coordinated by the Secondary 5 OE leaders! Aside from learning and imparting skills like tent-pitching and outdoor cooking, students had plenty of bonding time and valuable reflection sessions which served to cement the bond with their teachers and classmates. In a nutshell, the camp was truly an eye-opener for both; teacher and student, facilitator and participant. Our 4 days spent together had given us many opportunities to learn values and skills which would not have been picked up within the classroom setting. Going through thick and thin, together as a class and as a JYian family, had made each participant stronger. I saw many positive take-aways from the camp which showed JYians displaying humility, care, respect and ultimate resilience in the face of adversity. I would like to take this opportunity to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the understanding school leaders, energetic camp participants, my dear batch of OE leaders and the dedicated group of teacher facilitators for making this year’s camp a truly enriching and memorable one!

We went through the leadership modules by playing outdoor games. I learnt to focus very carefully in order to complete each fun task. The climb itself was made difficult because of the muddy state of the soil and also the ‘irritating’ leeches. Jasmine Chan (3A1) In the Challenge the Process Module, I realised that when we are faced with any challenging situation, we can overcome difficulties as long as we have the right values. Outdoor Educaton Programme Camp Leaders’ Course

Student Leadership Development Programme

For the very first time in our school’s history, the Camp Leaders’ Course was a strategic collaboration between the Outdoor Education (OE) department, the National Education (NE) and Values in Action (VIA) committee and the Student Leadership and Development departments.

A Leader’s Journey - Outward Bound Singapore

A total of 60 Secondary Three student leaders holding various leadership appointments from the respective CCAs: Prefectorial Board, Class Committee and the NE Ambassador group were selected for the 3-day-2-night course held in Juying Secondary School.

A group of ten Secondary Three student leaders attended the Outward Bound Singapore course in Pulau Ubin from 10 June to 14 June. These student leaders were selected from the Prefects Executive Committee, CCA/House leaders and Class Executive Committee.

The main objectives for this course was firstly, to train our student leaders to be more accomplished student leaders and role models for their fellow peers in school and secondly, to equip them with the competencies to organise and lead the 2014 Secondary One, Secondary Two Camps and the Secondary Three VIA projects.

The intensive 5-day residential programme was divided into three phases during which the students learnt about the fundamentals of leadership and group dynamics. The practical third phase saw them applying their knowledge and skills through challenging mini expeditions—trekking, kayaking and abseiling. Every student was stretched physically and mentally as they learned more about themselves and how to work with others. This programme also provided the students with an opportunity to exercise control over their own actions, to be responsible, and to develop perseverance and commitment.

The student leaders were put through a challenging course that tested not only their physical endurance but their mental fortitude as well. They learnt to collaborate as a team to create night challenge courses, organise team-bonding games and put up entertaining performances during the campfire. Through the planning and execution of these activities, the student leaders grew stronger as a unit as well as an individual and became more aware of their leadership capabilities. It is important to note that leadership is developmental and I believe our Secondary Three student leaders will continue to strive for excellence in providing meaningful and successful camps and VIA projects in 2014. I would like to thank and show my appreciation to all the staff and non-staff members who played a role in making the 2013 Camp Leaders’ Course a success. Reflection: The most important thing I learnt in this programme is that a good leader must respect others, take responsibility for his actions, be resilient as he takes on challenging tasks, be a good listener and possess self discipline. During our kayaking expedition, we were about to give up when our instructor buoyed up our spirits with, “Before you give up, look behind and see how far you have gone!” All of us became so motivated that we made it back to the campsite earlier than expected, even though the water currents were against us. This is something that I will keep forever in my heart. Written by: Bryan Tsao Jun Kai (3A1) 53

Pastoral Care & Career Guidance Education and Career Guidance (ECG)

Graduation Dinner 2012

ECG Committee provides a variety of platforms to help JYians in the development of attitudes, skills and self-knowledge that will provide them with the capability to explore, understand and make informed decisions with regard to their own potential and prospective careers.

The annual graduation dinner was held on 22nd November 2012 at Concorde Hotel. It was the first time in the school’s history that the graduation dinner was held in a hotel ballroom. All graduating students from Secondary 4 Express, 4 Normal Technical and 5 Normal Academic classes were invited to this event. Excitement was evident in the students as they celebrated this memorable day donning their best attire.

The Academic and Career Exhibition (ACE) 2013 on the 28th May 2013 was organised for the Upper Secondary students. Ten institutions participated in the exhibition. Through this interactive platform, JYians were able to amass vital information on the numerous courses offered by the various higher learning institutions as well as the prospects of furthering their studies beyond diplomas and ‘A’ Level. The graduating students (4E/4NA/5NA) were given at least an opportunity to experience polytechnic life. The students gained this first-hand insight into polytechnic education through the interactive workshops and simulated lectures that they attended. This was made possible through the various Polytechnics Visits, Open Houses and short courses organised by the five Polytechnics. The ECG Committee also organised other activities throughout the year such as Career Hours, ECG Lessons and Assembly Talks for the students. Through these platforms, JYians were able to make informed decisions regarding their plans for the future. Written by Mdm Nor Diana, ECG Coordinator

In conjunction with the graduation dinner, a workshop on social etiquette was conducted a few days before the dinner. This workshop taught the students the elaborate use of utensils in a dinner setting, as well as gave them advice on how to dress appropriately for the event. Based on the feedback given by both the students and teachers, the workshop was an enriching one. Entertainment came free flow with a professional emcee helming the games and a deejay spinning the tracks. The ubiquitous lucky draw with its attractive prizes certainly added to the joyful mood. For our lads and lasses, the birth of the 2012 Prom King and Prom Queen was a worthy moment. However, the highlight of the dinner was undoubtedly the dance segment which saw true energy bursting at its seams when all JYians took to the dance floor. When it was time to end the celebration, the students were very reluctant and lingered to take photographs. For all those present at the celebration, it was truly a beautiful evening. 18th Prefect Investiture

Thought of the Month (TOTM)

18th February 2013 was a significant date for our prefects as it was their 18th Prefect Investiture Ceremony. That day, the Secondary 2 and Secondary 3 prefects of Juying Secondary School took to the stage with much confidence and pride, spurred on by resounding cheers from their fellow JYians. The veteran prefects from Secondary 4, watched on with pride even as they handed over the reins of the school to their juniors, to assume a new chapter in their learning journey.

TOTM is one of the school-based Character and Citizenship Education (CCE) programmes. The TOTM Package serves as a reflective and developmental platform for both students and teachers. It seeks to provide the depth of reflection in each related CCE domain. The TOTM serves primarily as one that is a reminder or reinforcement, yet summative and inspirational.

The ceremony, organised by the senior prefects, was held with dignity and importance with the VIP, our principal, Mr Seet Tiat Hee leading our prefects on stage. In attendance were the Vice-Principals Mr Ow Kwok Leong, Ms Jennifer Wong and our caring teachers, beaming with pride and joy. The highlight of the event was the Principal’s speech, during which he reminded the prefects of the qualities of a good leader and the importance of upholding the school rules. The out-going Head Prefect Shalini Susan D/O Thanabalan of 4E1 and the new Head Prefect Nurul Umairah Bte Suhaimi also gave very inspirational speeches, which were well received. The Head Prefect was flanked by Vice-Head Prefects Nurnadia Bte Azin of 3E1 and Elnie Elfariney Bte Jeffrey from 3A2 and supporting the triumvirate are a highly versatile team of Prefect Executive Committee (Ex-Co) members. We congratulate these praiseworthy student leaders and have high hopes for them to display good leadership qualities not only to our prefects but also to the entire student body. Congratulations, Prefects! Wriiten by: Mr Surya 54

The TOTM sharing is done in stages. As the stages progress, the reflection increases in depth. At the First Stage – Mirroring, students are to think back of the facts and feelings that they have experienced based on the issues presented. At the Second Stage – Analysis and Evaluation, students delve into the deeper thoughts, intentions and emotions of the characters in the scene. This is in search for the reasons behind the experiences and happenings. The Third Stage follows through with a deliberate punch, where hypothetical situations involving partial removal of the direct original context, which can come in the form of the removal of existing systems, structure, infrastructure, characters or the switching of roles. This is to achieve empathy and more importantly, perspective taking. The Final Stage of Synthesis through reconciliation involves the relook at the natural course of action, what can be done now or in the future. This should follow with the evolving of new positive feelings, thoughts and commitment, thus leading to greater maturity. Written by Mr Chong Kai Qin and Miss Sharifah Committee)

Students’ TOTM Reflections: CCE Domain: Self “Persevering, aspiring to excel, resilience and responsibility are the values that Jeremy, Lizhen and Minghui have to achieve their dreams. My dream is to get into a polytechnic and be enrolled in a course that I want. To achieve my dreams, I need the values - Resilience, Persistence and Passion for learning.”

If I were in Mr Arthur’s situation, I would not be as strong as him. I would probably give up and harbor a thin hope for recovery. Without anyone’s encouragement, I don’t think I can persevere on or even think that I can fully recover one day. I would not have the courage to attend school. If I have the will power to move on, I will put in all my efforts and persevere till the end to find solutions to overcome my weaknesses.

Written by Lim Lixuan (2A1)

Written by Angela Tan (4E1)

Jeremy wanted to achieve his dreams. His perseverance helped him to succeed. He did not want to stay in the Normal Technical stream so he worked hard but he still could not get into the Normal Academic stream. However, he did not give up, he worked harder and being resilient, he finally did it. I want to get into the business course in a polytechnic. I will not give up even though it is difficult. In order to succeed, I need to persevere and work super hard.

CCE Domain: Family Whenever I faced difficulties or experience happiness, my guardian and her husband will be by my side. They are working so I can see them only for 3 hours a day. If they work in the afternoon, I won’t be able to see them for that day. Although that happens, I appreciate their care and the way they guide me in my attitude. Mr Chong, my Form Teacher, has changed me a lot. I am lucky to have such a caring teacher.

Values in Action Programme

NE Events: Total Defence Day cum chinese new year celebration

Secondary One VIA Programme Appreciating Our Cleaners I noticed that the school cleaners have been cleaning the school for many years yet many of our students did not notice this so we thought that we should present the cleaners with a certificate of appreciation to recognise their efforts in keeping the school clean and tidy. We hope to tell the students that the reason why we can study and play in a conducive environment is because of the cleaners’ efforts in keeping the school clean. Orvin Low Ying Xian (1E1) After conducting the project, I felt very satisfied as all our hard work was worth it. Our class’ presentation went very well as all our classmates gave their all for the presentation. During the presentation of the certificate to our cleaners, they looked very happy as maybe it was their first time going up the stage to receive a certificate from our school principal. When I looked at their faces, I felt very delighted. Muhd Akmal B Abdul Rahman (1E1)

Secondary Two VIA Programme Visit to Meiling 14 March to 18 April

Senior

Activity

Centre

Objectives: •

To develop gracious and caring students towards the community

To inculcate the value of respect to the elderly in JYians

To foster teamwork in class by planning activities for the elderly during the visit

For the visit to Meiling Senior Activity Centre, the entire Secondary Two cohort was involved. Prior to the visit, the students, together with their form teacher, planned a detailed programme to be carried out on the day of the visit. The programme included activities for the elderly such as singing, dancing and playing of games. Refreshments for the elderly were also prepared by the students themselves. The students found the VIA trip truly meaningful and many expressed their desire to return to the centre in the future to spend more time with the seniors.

Everyone worked seriously together. I was happy that we get to take away some of the burden from them by giving them 3 days off. I appreciate all the work the cleaners put in since they started working. Cleaning the whole school is not an easy task to do every day. From the cleaners’ expressions, they were really honoured getting to stand on stage, receiving the certificates. I was glad that they were given a token of appreciation for what they have done for the whole school. Nurul Asfarina Bte Asadar (1E1)

Secondary Three VIA Programme Food Collection for the Whispering Hearts Family Centre

At Juying Secondary School, Total Defence Day was commemorated on the 15th February 2013 with the objective of allowing students to realise their individual strengths and how they could help maintain the current prosperity and stability of Singapore, locally and abroad. Lower Secondary students had the opportunity to affirm one another’s strengths and reflect on how they can contribute to Singapore’s defence efforts. At the Upper Secondary level, students observed how Singapore extended its defence missions beyond Singapore. An example of this is the case of the SAF personnel deployed to Afghanistan. Thereafter, students reflected on their strengths and how they too could contribute to Singapore’s defence missions, if given a chance.

of countries like Sweden and Switzerland; in addition, issues like food and water rationing, hyperinflation, and the resilience of our forefathers during the Japanese occupation were also mentioned. Despite the sober realities of war, the message was also one of encouragement in which all JYians were reminded of doing their part for the defence of Singapore.

Prior to the commemoration of Total Defence Day, a broadcast item produced by the English Department was played during a morning assembly in the school hall. Through the broadcast, staff and students were provided with a background of Total Defence Day: Such as how this day was adapted from the experience

These activities enabled students to experience the spirit of Total Defence Day in a holistic manner.

After the classroom activities, JYians celebrated Chinese New Year with a concert. At the opening to the concert, our principal, Mr Seet, reminded JYians the significance of Total Defence; to mark Singapore’s fall to the Japanese in 1942 and that Singapore fell to the Japanese during Chinese New Year.

NE Events: International Friendship Day

The theme for this year’s International Friendship Day (IFD) was The World in Singapore and it was commemorated on the 15th of April. The three objectives of the event were: •

the impact of globalisation on Singapore

the value of regional cooperation in the nation’s development and future

the importance of being resilient and united as a community, in times of adversity and crisis

During the assembly programme, we were delighted to have a group of students from Maktab Sabah joining us as our special guests for the celebration. They introduced and shared with the JYians their traditional dance. During the dance session, a group of JYians were invited to join the Maktab students in learning their traditional dance and dancing along with them. Students from both schools enjoyed themselves and forged closer ties through the interaction. This was certainly one of the highlights of our IFD celebration. The thrills and spills did not end there as the activity following that was the Mass Dance Competition. Coming from various racial, religious and continental backgrounds, the students capitalised on their diverse talents in order to make the event a success. It was evident from the cheers and encouragement that the students truly rose to the occasion. All in all, the students had a great time in learning about their neighbours and friends and the International Friendship Day 2013 was truly a memorable event for all JYians. NE Events: National Day cum Racial Harmony Day Celebrations

The theme for this year National Day Celebrations was Many Stories…One Singapore. Unlike in previous years, this year’s National Day was especially memorable, as our school, in conjunction with Nanyang Community Club, Pioneer Secondary School, Xingnan Primary School and Juying Primary School, commemorated our country’s birthday by having a National Day Observance Ceremony on the 14th of July. The ceremony was held at the hard court opposite block 953. Even though it was a Sunday, all JYians involved gathered at school early and walked to the venue. Excitement and enthusiasm were clearly evident on our faces as we readied ourselves to become a part of a Human (National) Flag that embodied racial and religious harmony among many other virtues. We held the flag cards as high as we could reach so that the Human Flag could be viewed magnificently on the screen, as well as by the residents in the neighbouring blocks. We sang the National Anthem proudly and recited the Pledge with zest. Though it was drizzling, our JYian spirit was not dampened as we forged ahead and sang the National Day songs and enjoyed the memorable occasion with the rest of the revellers. Racial and religious differences mattered not one bit as JYians stayed united as one family and celebrated the nation’s birthday proudly. The event rounded off with lots of photo shoots and cheers. Not only did JYians display great talent, we also demonstrated care and concern for our environment as our students eagerly picked up the litter around the area. It was certainly a National Day celebration that cannot be easily forgotten and will live long in our hearts. Wriiten by: Mdm Rozana Bte Salleh

CrossCountry

sports day

The 18th Annual Cross-Country Run was held at the Japanese and Chinese Gardens on the 15th of March 2013. As expected, the weather was perfect this year too and everyone was eagerly looking forward to another successful run.

Our School 18th Annual Sports Day was held on the 12th of April 2013 (Friday) from 7.30 to 11.15am at the Jurong West Stadium. The theme for this year’s Sports Day was Resilient Mind, Strong Will. An enthusiastic crowd gathered as early as 7am, all ready to support their own House and school mates.

The event kicked off with our Principal, Mr Seet’s opening address. The respective categories were then flagged off after a short warm-up at the Japanese Garden’s starting point. Our students showed grit, determination and resilience in finishing their run. Teachers deployed as marshals, motivated the students with words of encouragement and ensured their safety along the various checkpoints. As in previous years, there was intense competition between the various Houses. After tallying the scores for the weekly PE Mass Run and the results of the Cross-Country Run, the Rockies House emerged as the Champion house for the third consecutive year! Well done Rockies! Here’s a big thanks to all staff and students for making this event a success and kudos to all JYians for completing the race.

Unlike previous years, where it was always a two-horse race, this year we witnessed a nail-biting fight among all the Houses. The closely fought competition for the overall title started from the beginning, all the way, till the very last event. No one was able to predict the winner for this year’s Sports Day as it was a neck to neck race throughout the competition. Eventually, the Andes House emerged victorious and was crowned the Overall Champion for this year’s Sports Day. It was indeed one of the most exhilarating Sports Days in the history of Juying. This extraordinary feat would not have been possible without the effort of the House Masters and the students. We would like to congratulate all the Houses for putting on a great show this year.

Performance for the Speech Day Concert 2013

4th Winter Band Festival 2012

Singapore Youth Festival 2013 As with many other school bands in Singapore, the focus of the JYSS Symphonic Band was on performing well at the Singapore Youth Festival 2013. Right from the early months of the year, band practices were intense and focused on perfecting the sounds of every single band member. Despite the intensity and rigour, we managed to perform up to our expectations and attain the Certificate of Accomplishment at the SYF 2013. This was indeed a sweet fruit to the arduous labour of our band members!

Held in the magical wonders of Hong Kong Disneyland, this five-day educational trip and competition was indeed an exciting one for our JYians. Throughout this expedition, members of the JYSS Symphonic Band got the chance to interact with band members of a local school, Belilios Public School, explore the local cultures of Hong Kong and be taught by Dr. Tim Lautzenheiser, one of the most prestigious conductors in music education. On top of these enriching activities, the JYSS Symphonic Band emerged with a Silver Award in the competition – a well-deserved reward to months of hard work and preparation.

In 2012, the NCC Unit won the Bronze Award in the Annual Best Unit Competition (BUC). The BUC encompasses different components such as participation (member retention, participation in HQ events), proficiency (sea proficiency test, sea competition, orienteering competition) and training (shooting classification, annual adventure camps). NCC aims to instil in every cadet confidence and determination. This is achieved through diverse activities during which the mental discipline, physical fitness and endurance of each cadet is put to test. During their four or five years with NCC, cadets are imparted with basic nautical skills and knowledge through theory classes and practical fieldwork such as kayaking, bends and hitches, orienteering and shooting. Cadets also have the opportunity to undergo courses conducted by NCC HQ on the basic survival skills and First Aid.

The final phase of the E3 framework, Excel, will take place at the upper secondary level, after the students are being streamed accordingly. This is the phase during which students will strive to excel in Art especially to prepare them for their O level examination. At the same time, students will develop basic concepts of design and elements of art. They will be enhanced intellectually by the history and style of the visual arts. During this process of learning, students will learn to understand and respect works of art from global cultures. They will create artworks that integrate emerging technologies as well as traditional techniques. They will be able to give constructive criticism and opinions on creative works of others in a supportive and respectful manner and recognise visual arts as a continually evolving entity that incorporates different media. They will also create pieces of art work that portray emotions and personality and learn the skills to apply the arts to all areas of their academic, personal and professional lives. By the end of their academic year, students will develop a growing appreciation of the artist, works of art and development of the arts in the community.

Mission: To nurture committed cadets who are resourceful, responsible and resilient to be loyal leaders and team players through fun and challenging military-related activities.

This year, our cadets participated in the Asia Dive Expo (ADEX) 2013 held at Marina Bay Sands. They had an enriching experience trying underwater sports such as underwater hockey and scuba diving. Our cadets did us proud during the sea competition. They put up a tough fight against the other schools and our female junior cadets came in 3rd position while our male cadet leaders came in 4th position in the Kayaking Competition held at Upper Seletar Sea Training Centre (USTC) in July.

Unit Overall Performance Achievement 2012 – Bronze

Joining Tourism Club has enabled me to develop my communication and management skills. I learnt how to serve as an effective guide too. During trips, I gained the experience of guiding both my peers and foreign visitors to some places of attractions in Singapore. However, before that, I had to do a thorough research on a place and write a short informative script. Once that was done, I introduced to the people the spectacular features, monuments and history of that place. Through these, I also got to know Singapore better. Tourism Club has also given me opportunities to be the emcee of various events in school. I learnt a lot from every event and strived to do better every time. I hosted visitors to our school too. From that, I made new friends and also discovered more about their countries. I benefited from being in Tourism Club by having rare opportunities that most of my classmates or schoolmates do not get. I believe that in the future - be it in studies, at work, or in daily life - my experiences will come to good use.

The objective of Green Club is to develop students to be more aware of the environment issues and the possible efforts to manage these issues. The idea of the environment spirals out from the school to the nation and finally on the global scale. It also includes the students’ contribution towards the school in terms of landscaping and their efforts in the recycling project such as maintaining the plants in school and to manage the recycling of Tetra Pak in the canteen. Students are involved in different projects each term and in the midst of doing so, they develop competencies such as self- directed learning when they research on their individual projects and also confidence when they do their presentation.

The Art Club, consisting of 23 members, is like a family welcoming all JYians who love art and do it as a passion.

The Art Club

This year kicked off with installation art such as wire sculptures, mobiles flowers which are made up of egg cartons, life-size paper figurines and a recycled box robot that is as tall as our secondary one JYian. We also got our hands dirty with clay. Besides art production, we are also making the school more inviting by putting up artworks painted by the members of the Art Club and also other JYians. During the Nov-Dec school holidays last year, some of our Art Club members collaborated with the Humanity Department to reproduce art from the Singapore-Malaysia Rail Station at Tanjong Pagar. The wonderful artwork can be seen just outside the school hall.

Back in school, also another first, our members organised and managed an InterHouse Chess Competition for the school community. This was to encourage the playing of Chess in school and at the same time allow various House members who are non-athletic to contribute to their House. Our Secondary Three members were in charge of the overall organising of this event while the graduating leaders were mentors to these newly appointed Secondary 3 leaders. To ensure that our members have some form of exercise during CCA, the once a term Games Day , allows our members of some cardiovascular workout. The Secondary Two students are the organisers on Games Day. These students conceptualise the games, plan out the logistics and manpower required and think through the flow of events for the smooth running of Games Day. Fencing, a sport that requires wit and speed, is one that complements our club’s mission and operational objectives. During our annual enrichment programme, our club members are coached by certified and renowned Fencing coaches. This yearly 3-day enrichment programme has garnered a lot of interest, with members looking forward to sessions the next year. The programme allows every member to learn one Fencing weapon each year. On the last day of the programme, members compete using their newly found knowledge of the weapon. These programmes and events have been designed to hone multiple soft skills in our members. Students are developed thoroughly with organisational, communication, interpersonal and decision-making skills. Written by: Mr Chong Kai Qin

‘B’ Division Boys The year started out for the ‘B’ Division boys with them taking part in the annual West Zone Tournament held in January. Prior to that, they prepared themselves by training hard during the December holidays, and participating in friendly tournaments such as the Zhenghua CSC and Geylang Serai CSC Tournaments. Through these friendly tournaments, they had the chance to pit their skills against worthy opponents from Greenridge and Queensway Secondary Schools, to name a few. This helped to instil teamwork and determination in them, and proved helpful in enabling them to gain more competitive basketball experience. Though the boys did not manage to proceed to Round 2 in the West Zone Tournament despite fighting tenaciously, we are nevertheless proud of them for the resilience and sportsmanship they displayed in persevering when faced with strong opponents.

I love basketball as I want to train smart to improve. Written by: Seth Ong (2A1) We learn more basketball skills and cooperate with one another better through training and outings. Written by: Gabriel Ho (2T2) I really enjoyed the friendly matches played in June, as I learnt many skills along the way. I like the West Zone competitions too, though it’s hard to play, we gave our best and tried to win. We hope to win more matches next year!

Under the coaching of Mr John Sng, most of the ‘C’ Division boys have shown improvement in their game skills compared to the first year they joined. Through his guidance and structured training programme, the boys were coached to have strong fundamental game skills. In June, they participated in the T-NET Friendly Tournament in preparation for the West Zone Tournament in July. Through these friendly matches, the boys gained exposure in applying the game skills learnt during trainings and familiarised themselves with how a game is refereed. It was a great opportunity for them to gauge how they fared against other competitors. Determined to beat their opponents in the West Zone Tournament, the boys managed to defeat Hillgrove Secondary School with a good lead. However, it was insufficient for the boys to make it to the second round. Despite that, the boys can be applauded for showing improvements in playing offensively and defensively throughout the tournament, and being undaunted by their competitors.

Silver Award in Netball M1 Schools’ Challenge League 2013 This is my third year in the Netball school team. I am blessed to have joined Netball as I have gained so much. Netball teaches me discipline, resilience, patience, teamwork and to always strive to do better. Netball has also given me many friends, from my team mates as well as netballers from other schools. Netball has made me fitter and (I like to think) a better person too. Netball has also given me a lot of lovely memories. I still remember this one particular moment when I was just a scrawny newbie. We had to do passes with the seniors in the team. I could not do a strong pass and my passes were not up to my coach’s expectations. As a result, everybody in the team had to run around the whole court. I felt guilty and disappointed with myself because I felt I was not good enough. I wanted to give up but my team mates motivated me. For months, I practised hard to get my passes right. I wanted to prove to everyone that I could be good too. I was determined to be as good as my then captain. It took me more than a year to achieve that. The values that I have learnt in netball, I apply to my everyday life. I am more patient when training newbies. I don’t give up easily. I am not afraid of hard work and I am positive when faced with obstacles. I look forward to all my trainings because of my team members. Netball training is a time when we girls bond together, sweat together, laugh and cry together and have lots of fun together. Despite our differences, we work hard together to achieve our goals and we encourage one another to do better. It is such a great team and I feel we are a big family. I am thankful to have the support of my members to be the Vice-Captain of the Netball team.

Is this real or are we dreaming? I would like to share with the school about our experiences in the Netball M1 Schools’ Challenge 2013. It was the first major tournament that we have won and I know we will always remember this event with fondness. We went against Boon Lay Secondary School for the first match on the 5th of April 2013. We felt excited as it had been a while since we had a match. We were determined to do our best in this competition as we had been training very hard. We were very pleasantly surprised and touched to see some of our school mates at the ISH to lend us their support. We won that match. The second match was with Chong Boon Secondary School. It was a really tough fight, compounded by the fact that we just had our Sports Day in the morning and many of us participated in the sports events. We were exhausted but we still gave the competition all we could. However, that was not sufficient and we lost by a small margin of a few points. The next match was against Northland Secondary School. At first, we were losing and many of us were getting injured. Somehow, that only served to spur us further and when we realised we won by 2 points, we screamed with excitement and some of us shed tears of relief and joy. The final match was against Fairfield Secondary School. Though we had two wins, we were not complacent. Although a few players could not come due to extra lessons, that did not dampen our spirits one bit. We fought even harder. We played all 4 sessions. We were exhausted but we did not stop. We went on relentlessly and somehow we won. We were ecstatic. We had not realised we got 2nd placing until a month later when our coach announced it to us. It was the first time the Netball Club won and I am sure we will continue to win more competitions. This win will definitely spur us to work harder. Last but not least, we will like to thank school leadders Mr Seet; Mr Ow; Ms Wong; our netball teachers: Mrs Leong, Ms Yang and Ms Ma; our coaches and our schoolmates who came to cheer for us whenever possible. “Success is not final. Failure is not total. It is the courage to continue that counts.” Written by: Low Ee Ling (3E1), Captain

juying

our

oyster

Oysters are known for their ability to draw sediments, nutrients and algae in and over their gills to create shiny, beautiful pearls. Likewise, we wish for Juying to be our pupils’ oyster. We seek to be accommodating as a home for pupils of all abilities and backgrounds. We also aspire to enhance and amplify the individual talents of each pupils, such that they may, like pearls, shine and illuminate any organisation they may enter in the future.
