Message from
The SAC Chairman 2015 is a very special year for Juying Secondary as we celebrated Singapore’s 50th birthday as well as Juying Secondary’s 20th anniversary. Founded in 1995, Juying Secondary lives by our late founding father, Mr Lee Kuan Yew’s belief that the quality of Singapore’s future is determined by the quality of her youths. Over the past 20 years, Juying Secondary has helped Jyians progress towards institutes of higher learning, and nurtured them into people with strength of character, possessing strong instincts for racial harmony and our collective future.
Message from
The Principal
“Living the Legacy. Nurturing for tomorrow” is the theme adopted to mark Juying Secondary’s 20th Anniversary (JY20) cum Singapore’s 50th Anniversary (SG50) celebration. It sums up our aspirations and hope to continue the great legacy left behind by our pioneer educators, and to nurture the new generation of tomorrow. We are very happy and honoured that many of our staff who belong to the pioneer generation and who were founding members of the school returned to Juying Secondary to celebrate and be appreciated by the present generation of Jyians. They included Dr Ong Ann Tee, founding Chairman of our School Advisory Committee, Mr Richard Dawson, Cluster Superintendent of Juying Secondary for 18 years, and Mrs Lee Yin Ling, our founding Principal, who provided the key leadership in the earlier years of starting the school.
Juying Secondary School has certainly made an impact on Singapore with her contributions and achievements. To all Juying staff, parents, partners and students, you can be very proud of the school because it has consistently achieved value-added results in the GCE O and N Level Examinations. The programmes and activities organised by the school and its partners, such as the Fitness Run at Singapore Discovery Centre and overseas Values-In-Actions expeditions, are also clearly evident of the continuous effort by the school to develop the pupils holistically.
2015 began on a very positive note with the release of the 2014 GCE O level results, as our Jyians achieved the best set of value-added results for both the Secondary 4 Express and Secondary 5 Normal (Academics) streams in the last decade. This was followed by the excellent results achieved by our Aesthetics groups who participated in the Singapore Youth Festival Arts presentation, achieving two Certificates of Distinction and two Certificates of Accomplishment. Our IT and Media Club also did the school proud by sustaining their Gold awards in various Picomouse competitions. Capping the list of outstanding achievements was the best results for the GCE N level examination in Juying Secondary’s history, where almost all subject passes and distinctions were above and comparable to the national results.
There is a Chinese saying, “前人种树,后人乘凉”, which literally means “one generation plants the trees, another generation enjoys the shade”. I want to specially thank the pioneer educators of Juying Secondary School for sowing the seeds of love and labour. Because our pioneer educators laboured, we are able to enjoy the fruits of their labour today. We are able to celebrate Juying’s achievements this year because we are living the legacy which the pioneer educators have sown. I also want to thank the founding Chairman of the school advisory committee, Dr Ong Ann Tee, for serving Juying Secondary for two decades. Dr Ong took a keen interest in the progress of the school and contributed towards students’ holistic development with the Dr Ong Ann Tee Special Award which is given out annually at the school’s Speech Day. Dr Ong also took an equal interest in staff excellence and contributed towards staff recognition through the I3 Awards and R3IGHT Awards, which were given out during the Teachers’ cum EAS’ Day celebration.
All these achievements – in both academic and character development domains - were made possible because we have a strong team of caring, competent and empowered staff. One such staff member is our Year Head, Mrs Amy Yeo, who was the finalist of the President Award for Teachers 2015. She exemplifies the dedication and commitment of all our staff in Juying who are guided by our school’s OYSTER philosophy and our H.E.A.R.T.S. ethos to teach, guide and motivate our JYians to scale greater heights.
Having received the baton of leadership from Dr Ong, I will continue the excellent work and foundation laid by Dr Ong and the dedicated members of our School Advisory Committee, work together with the Principal, Mr Seet Tiat Hee, his team of competent and caring staff, and supportive parents to bring Juying Secondary to achieve new peaks in striving towards Academic Excellence, Character Excellence, Staff Excellence and Partnership Excellence.
We are also grateful to our generous and supportive School Advisory Committee who contributed both time and financial resources to enable our school to become a more conducive learning environment. Similarly, our Parents’ Support Group and our partners in education such as the Nanyang Community and Tzu Chi Foundation also supported the school in countless ways and provided opportunities for our Jyians to serve.
Together we will succeed.
Mr Andy Koh Ngak Tong Chairman School Advisory Committee Juying Secondary School
Mr Seet Tiat Hee Principal Juying Secondary School
We will continue to strive towards our vision of developing our students to be a Gracious Community of Lifelong Learners with Strength of Character as we stay true to our mission of “Inspiring Learning, Inculcating the R3IGHT Values and Impacting Lives”. Together we will succeed.

Juying Secondary School had lined up a number of activities to celebrate the SG50 year. This year, our school celebrated our 20th Anniversary cum SG50 Celebration on 26 May 2015 based on the theme ‘Living the Legacy, Nurturing for Tomorrow’. The theme to mark Juying Secondary’s 20th Anniversary cum SG50 celebration sums up our aspirations and hope to continue the great legacy left behind by our pioneer educators, and to nurture the new generation of tomorrow. There is definitely no better opportunity than this special occasion, for us to join the nation in paying tribute to the pioneer and senior educators of Juying Secondary, who have made significant contributions, and impacted the lives of many Singaporeans and JYians.

The whole school also commemorated SG50 Jubilee National Day Observance ceremony on 9/8/15 at the Jurong West Stadium. The guests included the residents living in the Nanyang neighbourhood and our various stake-holders such as parents, SAC members and the GOH, Mr Alvin Yeo, Adviser to Nanyang GROs.
The school was honoured to have former principals, including our pioneer Principal, pioneer teachers and HODs as well as our pioneer EAS, to grace the occasion. The event was meaningful as well as nostalgic as the guests reminisced the good old days and recalled fond memories. It was also a time to renew old friendships. As part of the SG50 celebrations, our school also remembered the less fortunate amongst us. In this respect, the staff and students embarked on a special Values-In-Action project to raise money for charity by making soft toy bears for adoption. We managed to

Principal’s Address 2015 20th Anniversary cum SG50 Celebration on 26 May 2015. Living the Legacy, Nurturing for Tomorrow Mr Alvin Yeo, our Guest-of-Honour, and Adviser to Nanyang GROs Mr Richard Dawson, Cluster Superintendent, West 3 Dr Ong Ann Tee (BBM), Chairman, Juying Secondary School Advisory Committee
Good evening. A very warm welcome to all This year, 2015, marks a key milestone in the history of Juying Secondary. Not only are we celebrating the school’s 20th Anniversary, we are also very privileged and honoured to be able to commemorate Singapore’s 50th birthday in the same year. “Living the Legacy. Nurturing for tomorrow” - the theme to mark Juying Secondary’s 20th Anniversary cum SG50 celebration – sums up our aspirations and hope to continue the great legacy left behind by our pioneer educators, and to 6
nurture the new generation of tomorrow. There is definitely no better opportunity than this special occasion, for us to join the nation in paying tribute to the pioneer and senior educators of Juying Secondary, who have made significant contributions, and impacted the lives of many Singaporeans and JYians. We are indeed very happy and honoured that many of our Pioneer Generation staff and Senior staff of Juying Secondary are here with us this evening. They include our Founding Chairman of our School Advisory Committee, Dr Ong Ann Tee, Superintendent for 18 years Mr Richard Dawson, Founding Principal Mrs Lee Yin Ling, Vice-Principal Mrs Tay Kheng Siong,
HODs Mr Koh Chong Khye and Mrs Mun-Tan Ling Cheng, Cikgu Sies Senan, Mr Lim Chye Lye, Mdm Chia Wang Kiang, Operation Manager Chong Kim, OSO Mdm Ong Kim Chor and Mdm Syamala, just to name a few. We also have a number of very senior Pioneer Generation Educators who are still teaching or serving in our school. They are Retired Principals Mr Billy Goh, Mr Thomas Ong and Mr Johari, Retired HODs Mr Watt Chan Meng, Mrs Chew Suit Mei, Teachers Ms Agnes Yong, and OSO Mr Ng Poh Huat. Please join me to thank all our Pioneers and Seniors, once again, for taking the time to come and join us on this joyous occasion. You deserve our loudest applause today as you not only have served Juying Secondary, you have played a key role in the progress and development of modern Singapore today. Please allow me to share some of the contributions of our pioneer staff who started Juying Secondary.
Living the Legacy – Special Mention of Pioneer Educators of Juying Secondary vis-à-vis JY20
Our founding Principal, Mrs Lee Yin Ling, played a significant role in starting and building up a new school which has grown to what it is today, from the earliest campus in the 4th level of Pioneer Secondary, to the former Jurong Institute premises which is now our present site. Her visionary leadership and exceptional people management skills had impacted many
staff members. Mr Michael Low, our Lead Teacher, remembers Mrs Lee’s “fantastic motivation skills and her dream of making the school to be the best secondary school in the west.” He appreciated her care and concern for the personal well-being and welfare of her staff which also extended to their families. In his own words, “Such thoughtful leadership was what endeared the staff towards Mrs Lee and made Juying a wonderful place to be in.” In addition, Mrs Lee co-wrote the lyrics of our school song which we sang earlier on, together with one of our current teachers, Mrs Choong Lay Len. Her talent also extends to Chinese Calligraphy that resulted in the creation of a Spring Couplet which is still hung at the front of the school building during Chinese New Year. Her couplet encourages all of us to create a conducive learning environment in the school. One of our senior teachers, Mdm Sophia Goh who remembers Mrs Lee fondly has this to say, and I quote, “Mrs Lee has impressed a lot of younger staff for her self-discipline and learning. Mrs Lee set a very good tone, created a great learning environment for the school and she is an excellent example of one who never stops learning. Even after she retires, she continues to write books.” Thank you, Mrs Lee for being an inspiration to our teachers. Working alongside with Mrs Lee is one of our longest serving Vice-Principals, Mrs Tay Kheng Siong, who helped to compose the school song. Due to her passion in music, Mrs Tay started 7
the JYian Talent Time. She is fondly remembered by staff and students as someone who is firm and yet caring. She has a big heart and initiated the fund raising staff auction cum performance “Crouching Teachers, Hidden Talents” in 2003 – a charity concert in aid of the student foundation by Jyian Teachers for Jyians. Many of the teachers remember Mdm Syamala, as a very responsible and dedicated Operations Support Officer. She has a radiant smile that brightens up the office and her presence brings cheers to both the staff and students. Mrs Choong shared with me that even to this day, Mdm Syamala is still concerned about the well-being of the staff and the achievements of the school. One of our pioneer teachers who joined Juying Secondary in the founding years and is still teaching here is none other than Cikgu Sies. Cikgu Sies, who is turning 69 this year, is also celebrating his 50th anniversary of service in education. Starting off as a teacher in Permai Sura Primary School in 1965, Cikgu Sies overcame many challenges faced by many pioneers such as having very little resources and educating students during Singapore’s turbulent years. His philosophy which was to “Give his best to every Child” – is one he still lives by today as a teacher in Juying Secondary. Cikgu Sies instils values and discipline in his students inside and outside the classroom, as a Malay Language teacher as well as a soccer coach. I am sure that all our pioneer educators who are here this evening bring with our students and staff lots of wisdom and experiences in their many years of dedication to the education service. The little anecdotes that I share will not be able to do justice to the immense contributions they have done for Singapore and our school.
Special Mention of Founding Chairman of Juying Secondary
One person that I need to make special mention this evening is our founding Chairman of the School Advisory Committee, Dr Ong Ann Tee. Dr Ong has been awarded the prestigious National Day award, BBM last year, to recognize his 20 years of service to Juying Secondary. A supportive Chairman of all school events, Dr Ong has always taken a keen interest in the well-being of the students and has offered advice and suggestions on how the school could better support the students. Dr Ong has graciously donated a sum of money and instituted the Ong Ann Tee Special Award for graduating students who have achieved excellent value-added results and have displayed exemplary behaviour. Dr Ong also sponsored the Teachers’ Day Awards, which are aligned to the school’s mission of Inspiring Learning, Inculcating Values and Impacting Lives, and the R3IGHT awards which are aligned with the school values to recognize staff who have demonstrated a fulfillment of the school’s mission & values. Thank you, Dr Ong, for your faithful support for Juying all these 20 years!
Juying Secondary School Report 2014
Now let me move on to present the School Report for 2014. The school went through a re-envisioning exercise in 2013 and we have in the last 2 years been integrating and streamlining our various processes and programmes to better cater to our students’ learning and development needs. Guided by our shared mission of “Inspiring Learning, Inculcating Values & Impacting Lives”, I would like to share with you this evening the fruits of our effort and commitment under the 4 respective strategic thrusts. Strategic Thrust 1 – Achieving Academic Excellence Our strategic thrust 1 is to achieve value-added results and I am very pleased to announce that for the second consecutive year, both the Sec 4 Express and 5 NA for the Class of 2014 have once again achieved outstanding value-added results at the GCE O Levels examinations. Outstanding results are seen in many subjects such as 4 Express: 46% Distinction for Combined Humanities; 47% Distinction
for Chinese; 44% Distinction for Malay; 100% Passes for Science, Maths, Malay and Chinese. For Sec 5NA: we achieved better than national averages for Malay, Chinese, Combined Humanities and Science. Despite our students coming from very humble background with lower PSLE T-Score1 as compared to the national average, their achievements are commendable in terms of L1B5 and L1B4 respectively, which are way above MOE’s expectation. This is one of the best sets of Value-added results for Sec 4 Express results in the last decade, surpassing the breakthrough results achieved by the Class of 2013! The outstanding set of results is indeed a testament to the consistent hard work of both the students and the teachers. Congratulations to the class of 2014 and our teachers for their breakthrough achievements in the 2014 GCE O Level Examinations! Strategic Thrust 2 – Achieving Character Excellence To enable us to achieve our strategic goals of developing character & citizenship values, knowledge, skills & competencies as well as developing aspiring talent & healthy lifestyle, we adopt an integrated and progressive CCE approach. We leverage various platforms to inculcate the school’s R3IGHT values as well as develop our students’ social-emotional competencies. One such platform is our Overseas Values In Action trips for our Sec 3 students. Since last year, our Sec 3 students are given the opportunity to perform service learning in a country that they decide (eg China, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam). This learning platform provides them with a rich learning experience and inculcates in them the school’s R3IGHT values. Students who went on such trips last year came back with a greater appreciation of our country and their families. We were heartened to observe how our students demonstrated care and teamwork when they were overseas. Another platform is our CCAs which enable our students to grow and develop. We have always stressed on the learning process – what the students learn and instill in the midst of preparing for competitions and performances. The CCA achievements are just one of the many outcomes of the students’ learning processes in our various CCAs. I would now like to share with you some of our key achievements for our CCAs in 2014 and 2015. For the recent SYF Arts Presentations, our Symphonic Band and Choir were awarded the Certificate of Accomplishment. Our Cultural Dance and Hip Hop Dance were awarded the Certificate of Distinction. These achievements would not have been possible without the commitment and resilience of the students and the teachers. Congratulations to the Aesthetics CCA groups. Later this evening, you will get to watch their performances which they have presented at the 2015 SYF. Of special mention is the Hip Hop Dance – you not only get to see their sleek dance moves but you will also get to appreciate a touching real life story that has been skillfully weaved into the performance. The story is about the challenges a boy faced in life and how he dealt with these challenges including the illness of his mother. The Hip Hop Dance crew was recently invited to put up the same performance at Deyi Secondary School’s Art Fiesta and some of the audience teared as they were immersed into the emotional story line. We hope you will be touched by their item later on. Our IT & Media Club continued to do us proud with their sustained achievements in the various competitions they took part in. Just to name a few, in 2014, they achieved 1st and 2nd position for Engineering Explorer – Picomouse Competition, 2nd in Singapore Robotics Picomouse Competition –and 2nd in National Junior Solar Car Sprint. In 2015, they were awarded Gold, Silver and Bronze in the Inter-school Picomouse Competition @ Ngee Ann Polytechnic.

Our Uniformed Groups, comprising both the National Cadet Corp (Sea) and the National Civil Defence Cadet Corp, achieved the Bronze award for the Best Unit Competition and the Unit Overall Proficiency Award respectively. All these achievements – in both academic and character development domains were made possible because we have a strong team of caring, competent and empowered staff to teach, guide and motivate our JYians to scale greater heights. This brings us to our Strategic Thrust 3 – Developing caring, competent and empowered staff to achieve Staff Excellence. The teachers and staff members embrace the school’s HEARTS ethos, striving towards the culture of care and learning with our students and for our students. Our teachers engage in weekly professional discussions in professional learning teams to explore how they can address the identified learning needs of students and collaborate to create teaching resource packages. In addition since the beginning of this year, supported by the English Language Institute of Singapore (ELIS), we have also adopted a whole school approach to promote effective communication in English in the respective subjects. I am sure you are aware that recently there have been discussions in the news forums about how teachers should mark students’ work and whether students should be penalized if they do not use the correct terms in their answers. This is a timely reminder of the importance of effective communication skills. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our teachers and EAS who have always been very positive and committed and always striving to do their best for our students – be it taking care of their learning needs or their social-emotional and financial needs. This evening, we will also be giving out the MOE Long Service Awards to staff with more than 10 years of long service. Thank you, staff of Juying Secondary! As a school, we are well aware that we are part of a larger community and that we could leverage one another to achieve the best possible outcomes for our students. Hence, we have Strategic Thrust 4 – Achieving Partnership Excellence which drives our partnership efforts to build supportive partnerships with our stakeholders and external organisations. Our School Advisory Committee, led by Dr Ong, has always been very supportive of our school initiatives. The SAC shares the same beliefs as the school that students are the focus in all our decision-making and often explores ways with the school on how we can better reach out to our students, especially those from low -income families. The members indeed have been very responsive to our requests for assistance – be it their presence at an important event or giving financial support. At this juncture, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Dr Ong and Mr Andy Koh from the SAC for generously sponsoring tonight’s dinner. Thank you, Dr Ong & Mr Koh! This evening, I am also very pleased to announce that Mr Andy Koh will be our next SAC Chairman. Mr Koh is an active member of the Jurong Lions Club and it is through his connection that our school has established a mutually beneficial partnership over the years. Congratulations, Mr Andy Koh and thank you for agreeing to assume the post of SAC Chairman! Our Juying Parents Support Group continues to be our active and important partner. The JPSG EXCO was formed in 2013, headed by Mr Thomas Loh as the Chairman and Mrs Candy Teo as the Vice-Chairman. Both have recently relinquished their posts but will continue to serve as advisors to the new JPSG EXCO. I would like to thank Mr Loh and Mrs Teo for their commitment and their leadership. And I would now like to take the opportunity to introduce and welcome the new JPSG chairman, Mrs June Lee, and the Vice-Chairman, Ms Christine Sim. Welcome, Mrs Lee & Ms Sim. For the last 3 years, we have been proactively seeking out external organisations for collaboration so as to leverage 10

on their programmes and resources to run our character development programmes.
Prize Winners
This year for example, we held our Annual Fitness Run at the Singapore Discovery Centre and at the same time, we also leverage on the NE exhibits and resources at the SDC to promote citizenship values in our students. We also have a close partnership with Tzu Chi, Lions Club, Nanyang Citizens’ Consultative Committee and Nanyang Police Division which provide the platforms for our students to do local Values-In–Action projects – for example, the painting of the flats of needy families in Nanyang division, and the recycling programme with Tzu Chi. Lions Club has been generous in providing sponsorship for our needy students for the past years. Last year, Lions Club presented the school a donation of $15,000 to support our needy students.
Secondary 1
My sincere and heartfelt appreciation to all our partners who have been supportive of our school and have played an active role in the character development of our students. We started our inaugural Partners Awards last year as a gesture of our appreciation for the collaboration and support of our partners. This year, we will be giving out the awards to members of our Juying Parents Support Group – Mr Thomas Loh, Mr Dickson Kang, Mrs Wendy Neo and Mdm Karen Chng as well as 2 of our working partners, the Singapore Discovery Centre and Nanyang Citizens’ Consultative Committee. Our heartfelt gratitude to our partners and parents! To conclude, I would like to congratulate the students and their parents, who will later be receiving prizes for their academic achievement. To the students, well done! As the saying goes, you reap what you sow - your efforts in pursuing academic excellence have indeed paid off! Be appreciative of the people who have been supporting you – your parents and your teachers. For the students who have graduated, I hope you will continue to do us proud and be good and useful citizens of Singapore, anchored by the school’s R3IGHT values and contribute meaningfully to the society.

Craft & Technology vision
Every JYian a self-directed learner, an innovative individual and a confident team player
We hope to prepare JYians for tomorrow’s rapidly changing world by providing them with the opportunity to think creatively and thus develop an inquiring mind. In building a community of gracious and lifelong learners, we envision all JYians to believe in their own abilities thus becoming independent learners, creative thinkers and confident team players. This is in alignment with the school’s OYSTER philosophy in which we believe that every student can learn, and that our objective is to provide a nurturing environment for each JYian to develop creative and critical thinking skills so that they will be able to “shine and illuminate any organisation they may enter in the future” with these skills required of an effective artist, nutritionist or engineer.
Long term goals
1) To develop JYians into confident and competent communicators 2) To develop a strong reading culture amongst JYians 3) To achieve value – added results in English Language To achieve our department vision of Every JYIAN an effective communicator using Standard English, the English Language & Literature Department built on the following key areas from last year:
vision
Every JYIAN an effective communicator using Standard English
MISSION
To achieve value-added results by equipping JYians with lifelong learning skills and values
1. The Extensive Reading Programme (ERP): The department embarked on a differentiated approach this year and subscribed to the Straits Times newspapers and Beyond Magazine for the Upper Secondary, and the National Geographic Magazine for the Lower Secondary. We continued with the weekly sharing of news articles to reinforce the importance of keeping up-to-date with current events as well as appreciate the use of language in the newspapers. To promote active reading, we invited our Vice-Principal, Ms Wong, to give a book talk on the popular Young Adult title ‘The Fault in our Stars’ by John Green. HOD/Humanities Ms Nurul shared ‘The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas’ by John Boyne, and Year Head, Mrs Amy Yeo, presented ‘The Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother’ by Amy Chua. These were well-received by our JYians. JYians were encouraged to keep a log of the books they had read and were given opportunities to tell others the books they had read, either in class or at the Speaker’s Corner. 2. The Applied Learning Programme (ALP): The ALP is in its second year of running, and the department carried out the following programmes to build competent and confident speakers: a. Competent Pronunciation through Storytelling for Sec 1. In addition, our Secondary 1 students dramatized scenes from their Literature text, Sing to the Dawn.
b. Confidence and Expression through Drama for Sec 2. The Secondary 2 students learnt how to express themselves confidently through drama in putting up skits based on their Literature text, Street of the Small Night Market.
c. Confidence in Public Speaking for Sec 3. The Secondary 3 students learnt how to present their opinions clearly and competently through group activities and presentations.
26
d. We continued to provide students with opportunities to perform or speak at various platforms. In particular, we sought to build confident speakers by encouraging JYians to address crowds at Speakers’ Corner on issues they were interested in, about the books they were reading, and also their reflections on the learning from the level camps and Values-in-Action trips.

Science vision
Information Communication Technology vision
Every JYian a self-directed learner, with an inquiring mind
Every JYian a self-directed and collaborative learner through the use of IT
MISSION
To cultivate lifelong learners with an awareness and interest in the application of Science in their daily lives
Objectives:
1) To cultivate students’ perception of Science as a collective way of thinking, rather than a body of facts. 2) To engage students in Science related issues that concern their lives, the society and the environment. Achievements: Science department started year 2015 celebrating the fruits of our exciting lessons and hard work throughout year 2014. JYians have done better than the national percentage distinctions, in the following subjects. 1. Sec 4NT N-Level ‘NT Science’ 2. Sec 4NA N-Level ‘Science(Physics/Chemistry)’ 3. Sec 4NA N-Level ‘Science(Physics/Biology)’ 4. Sec 4Exp O-Level ‘Science(Physics/Chemistry)’ 5. Sec 5NA O-Level ‘Science(Physics/Chemistry)’ Our first batch of 5NA O-Level ‘Science(Physics/Biology)’ students has also done everyone proud by matching the national percentage distinction. 2015 is yet another fruitful year for both Science teachers and JYians. Apart from achieving academic excellence, we believe in the holistic learning of Science. Through learning journeys and competitions, we enrich students’ knowledge of science and its relevance to our world. Our Secondary 1 students expanded their separation technique concepts to obtain clean drinking water at the NEWater Visitor Centre. They also learnt how Singapore has turned our limitation into strength through
perseverance. Some of our Secondary 1 students also took part in the Scientific Thinking Program held by Republic Polytechnic and learnt to apply the Scientific Method to propose to them the making of hair straightening cream. Our Secondary 2 students visited the Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve and were captivated by the vast species of organisms living in the mud land. Some of our Secondary 2 students were also selected for the GliderFest course this October and will take part in the competition in 2016. Our Secondary 3 students attended their Science related workshops at the Singapore Science Centre. While our Biology students were busy studying enzymatic activities, our Physics students had a lot of fun applying the concepts of heat transfer and cooking with electric irons! In Juying, we believe great teachers develop great students. This year, our team built on one another’s ideas to design an inquiry-based project package, via the department’s Professional Learning Circle. The aim was to instil in our students a deep interest for Science and apply their critical thinking skills. Selected secondary 1 and 2 classes took on the project which allowed them to conduct self-directed research and collaboration in groups to design and test out their scientific product. This experience also refined our mastery in addressing students’ needs when we plan lessons that involve inquiry. As always, student centricity is our core and we will continue to make our students’ learning engaging, enriching and effective.
ICT Programmes
The IT Department harnesses technology to provide an enriching learning experience to all JYians. We aim to build a pervasive culture of promoting effective use of ICT into the school curriculum to enhance pedagogy that engages collaboration and self-directed learning. In order to maximise learning moments, the following programmes are being implemented: 1. E–Learning There was an e-learning day on 17th April in Term 2 to promote independent learning of students who were given a platform to experience self-directed learning and collaborative learning via the use of IT from home. It also served to simulate a situation in case of school closure due to any possible emergency situations. Lessons and homework, in the form of e-lessons, e-tutorials and e-assessments, were posted on the school learning portal and assigned to students who completed them from home. The use of the portal helped to facilitate self-paced mastery. An online forum was catered for learning with queries and feedback from teachers. 2. SCRATCH Programming & Coursework All Sec 1 to 2 pupils were involved in the “Code for Fun” programme, using SCRATCH programme or Coursework (CPA) in Semester 1. These are tools which integrate technology into the curriculum to develop 21st century skills. For “Code for Fun” programme, it is to provide basic coding experience to lower secondary pupils as enrichment. It is to develop and enhance logical thinking and problem-solving skills through coding and storyboarding. Through this programme, we hope to enthuse and raise awareness among pupils about computing so as to groom and develop talents in this area. Pupils are also able to communicate their thoughts in e-Forums and are encouraged to explore new open tools online to present their reports. 3. IT Enrichment Programme (ITP) With the growing complexity and need for 21st century knowledge among the future working population, MOE has prescribed a baseline ICT standard across all Singapore schools. In order to meet these baseline requirement in ICT standards, all of Juying’s Lower Secondary pupils went through a compulsory IT Enrichment Programme (ITP) which is incorporated into curriculum time.
32
The strategic focus of ITP is to equip students with 21st Century Skills with the emphasis on computing and digital core competencies. This extends to the effective use of social media and ‘cloud’ platforms. With higher Internet speed, working with online cloud platforms like Google Drive, Google Documents & Forms have become increasingly vital skills for the 21st century learner. Lessons include collaborative document editing, collaborative sharing and online graphic editing. Students were required to gather authentic data from their peers on Google Forms which were later fused into their Cyberwellness Infographics projects – combining charts, graphics and researched information. This constructivist
approach provided an authentic and experiential learning experience for our students. Other programmes: • Assignments with project scenarios on Microsoft Excel to enhance spreadsheet skills • Introduction of eMindmapping as an e-platform for students to synthesise and summarise their subject learning, e.g. in Science and Geography. • Creating Personal Learning Channels on Youtube to consolidate various tutorial videos . • Introduction of Vector graphics creation on Inkscape to equip students with skills to create badges, seals and ribbons ; items commonly found in commercials & advertisements. • Knowledge and usage of Wordpress.com to help students consolidate projects.
SG50 Graphics Design Competition
Students also participated in the Nanyang CC SG50 Graphics Design Competition. Juying Secondary had the most number of winning entries when our students won 14 of the Top 50 Prizes. To further broaden media production skills, students were introduced to video editing on iPad using the in-built iMovies application. They were taught the fundamentals of video making based on the themes of SG50, Cyberwellness and Teachers’ Day. The module included video creation essentials such as storyboarding, scriptwriting, video shooting/framing and editing. These processes aimed at encouraging creative thinking and collaborative learning as students were required to work in teams to come up with original storylines. 4. Learning Platform ICT department has initiated the use of IPads to promote self-directed learning. Learning journeys assisted by ICT have spurred student’s interest in learning. Using QR codes; iPads with the adventure of roaming around to find out answers motivated the students to learn. On another front, the promotion of use of the Learning Management System (LMS) will act as the common platform for all communications and evaluation. Encouraging constant use of this platform allows both students and teachers to seek quick responses to problems students may face. Through the use of technology, we hope to maximise every learning opportunity by being current, student-centreed and future thinking. 33

Secondary One R IGHT Camp and Installation Ceremony 3
Secondary Two R IGHT Camp – Relationship Mastery 3
8-9 JANUARY 2015 The Secondary One R3IGHT Camp served to orientate the Secondary One students to the new school environment. They experienced the importance of respecting self and others through the camp team building activities and interaction with others. Under the guidance of the Student Leadership Development teachers, our Secondary 4 student leaders facilitated the camp. The Secondary One Installation ceremony was one of the highlights for the new Secondary One students. Each student received a JYian pearl from their form teacher to mark their formal inclusion into the JYian family. This pearl signifies the inculcation of the school values of R3IGHT: Respect, Responsibility, Resilience, Integrity, Graciousness, Humility and Teamwork. The Juying Scholarship Presentation Ceremony was also held during the camp. The scholarship was for the top students of the 2014 Secondary 1 Express, Normal(Academic) and Normal(Technical) cohorts who have chosen Juying Secondary school as their first choice.
28-30 MAY 2015 This year, the Secondary 2 R³IGHT Camp was held at Amoy Quee Camp, National Cadet Corps (NCC) Head Quarters. It was led by the Juying Outdoor Education team and instructors from Tomo Training Consulting Group Pte Ltd (TTCG), and supported by a group of dedicated teachers, who supervised the campers through all activities and reflections. It was a privilege to conduct our camp in an army campsite where campers had the opportunity to experience sleeping in a balsa (an outdoor tent structure) and military bunks. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF), thus making it significant and meaningful for the students to learn more about the SAF and the sacrifices that the SAF has made to protect and defend Singapore in times of need. The campers benefitted from the SAF Veterans League personnel who shared their knowledge and experiences, defining the importance of teamwork to achieve a common goal as people are Singapore’s only resource. The campers understood the importance of defending our country and that we should never take the peace and security that we enjoy now for granted. The highlights of the camp included the high elements, the Motivational Obstacle Course (MOC) and Paintball. High elements comprised the zip-line and challenge pole where campers challenged to overcome their fears of height. Group members provided cheers of encouragement and enthusiastic applause whenever a camper overcame an obstacle. Campers also had the opportunity to go through the MOC which included the high wall and nitro crossing. The campers
38
displayed their fighting spirit and camaraderie in a game of paintball. The game’s objective was to capture the opponent’s flag. It was heartening that every group displayed excellent teamwork in team-bonding activities. We were honoured to have Commandant NCC, LTC Yeo Yew Kuan, as the Guest-ofHonour for the campfire night. Parents and family members were also invited to enjoy performances by our talented JYians. As the camp concluded, campers learnt the importance of teamwork, a greater sense of social responsibility and the commitment to show care and concern for each other. The Secondary 2 R³IGHT Camp had been exciting and memorable. The valuable lessons learnt and friendships forged would definitely remain in the hearts of all campers in the years to come.

Guided by the Juying Outdoor Education team and Camelot instructors, and assisted by a team of committed teachers, our leaders experienced and reflected upon daily decisions and actions to foster their own growth in experiential learning. Demonstrating the R³IGHT Core Values, the leaders conquered various fears through each distinct activity. They displayed budding teamwork and respect for nature for their VIA task and resilience for their night confidence walk. Although the sea and land expeditions stretched them physically and emotionally, the leaders exhibited outstanding levels of resilience, responsibility and humility as a team. The LEAD camp had left an indelible imprint on the leaders’ training roadmap.

Long Term Goal: To groom our cadets to show greater social responsibilities and to take on an increased ownership of their school, unit and committee
National Civil Defence Cadet Corps
Vision A choice uniformed group that equips our youths with life-saving skills for challenging times ahead. MISSION To nurture and develop our youths into resilient and responsible citizens through innovative and challenging Civil Defence activities.
The recruitment drive for junior cadets marked a positive beginning as we were able to attract 21 recruits to our NCC (Sea) family, boosting our cohort numbers.
National Civil Defence Cadet Corps (NCDCC) was introduced to the school in 2007 and aims to develop the strengths, characters and knowledge of cadets. Our team of teachers strives to develop each cadet into a responsible and civicminded citizen. We also aim to nurture and mould the leader-ship skills in every cadet. Through a rigorous 4/5 year programme, cadets were provided with various opportunities and platforms such as the NCDCC Service Week Learning, Speech Day Parade, Nanyang Observance Ceremony and Unit Annual Camp to bring out the best in our cadets.
For 2014, the NCC unit achieved the Bronze Award in the Annual Best Unit Competition. NCC’s objective is to provide our cadets with a holistic learning experience which consists of multiple activities that aim to inculcate life skills such as confidence, leadership and perseverance. Through numerous physical and mental challenges, we develop our cadets by imparting a sense of national pride and social responsibility within each of them.
The secondary one recruitment drive marked the start of an eventful year where a total of 26 cadets were recruited into our NCDCC family. Through the fire safety training at HQ, the first year cadets were introduced to the importance of appreciating the need for Civil Defence in Singapore. Second year cadets attended adventure training camps which aimed to develop the values of Resilience, Graciousness and Teamwork in them.
The year of 2015 has been a memorable one for our enterprising NCC (Sea) coeducational Unit.
Our cadets have done us proud during the sea competition, securing champion for Bends and Hitches and a creditable finish in Kayaking. They have displayed a keen sense of fighting spirit and determination against strong competition from rival schools to attain these achievements. This year as we celebrate 50 years of our nation’s independence, we look back through the 50 years and remember the importance of the SAF in the defence of our nation. NCC is humbled to be part of this process through the nurturing of future leaders and soldiers.
Third and Fourth year cadets led the unit by applying what they had learnt during leadership camps and courses, such as the SNCO Course, with the aim of cultivating the value of Humility, Integrity and Teamwork in them. The highlight of the year was the Nanyang Observance Ceremony where our unit was given the opportunity to be the Guard of Honour. As we celebrated 50 years of our nation’s independence, our cadets also learnt the importance of nation security and that everyone plays a part in defending Singapore.

Badminton
Basketball
Vision Healthy Bodied and Moral Minded Jyians
Vision Basketball Club aims to develop JYians to be Healthy Bodied and Moral Minded sportsmen who strive for excellence on and off the courts.
MISSION To train & develop the fullest potential of students in the CCA so that they are physically fit, proficient in the skills, tactics and strategies of Badminton 2015 marked a special year for the Badminton Team at Juying as we welcome our first Girls’ Team. Despite being in the school team for only a few weeks, they took up the challenge to participate in the West Zone Tournament. Their determination, strength and resilience were tested but through the experience they were exposed to the grit required henceforth. In addition, our ‘B’ Boys did our school proud by entering the 2nd round of the West Zone Tournament. Each match was a tough fight but students rose to the occasion by displaying the R3IGHT values. This was seen in their spirit on the court as well as taking charge of deciding on crucial roles such the fixtures, linesmen and umpires for each match. It has been said, “Sometimes you win, sometimes you learn.” At Juying Secondary School, learning takes precedence. Students who choose Badminton as their Co-Curricula Activity (CCA) go through a rigorous training plan. Training sessions are held twice a week. These typically include basic strokes and techniques as well as basic footwork and court movement. Sports Psychology is another domain students develop. Students are also entrusted with leadership positions. While the Captain and Vice-Captain oversee and guide the team, the Lower Secondary team leaders are crucial members of the CCA who help to foster discipline, team spirit and sportsmanship. We believe these are the values and skills that will keep us going.
MISSION Strengthen the JYian Basketballers’ physical stamina and mental endurance through self-discipline, selfconfidence and self-esteem, and develop JYian Basketballers’ character and sportsmanship by fostering camaraderie and social integration.
2015 has been an exciting year for us. From the many friendly matches with different schools to the National Inter-school Tournament and the Community Basketball League, our boys displayed strong resilience and teamwork when faced with strong opponents. They did not give up when the going got tough and have shown a good improvement over last year’s performances. Our ‘B’ division players, Fabian Lim and Darren Garcia even had been interviewed and written by Red Sports which added a feather to our hat. However, the Juying Basketball team is not just about tournaments and playing basketball. Character building and leadership are equally emphasized upon. We engage in regular team-building activities to promote team spirit. Recognition of efforts and initiatives serve to motivate our boys and hence leadership is developed through training. We had the pleasure of attending the SEA Games to support Team Singapore Basketball and experience the standard of the national players. We also went for the SEA Games tour to support the other games. In November this year, we will be conducting a Combined Sports VIA Camp for our players and the boys will be organising a basketball competition for the primary school players. The followings are the 5 aspirations of a JYian Basketballer. 1. I am not a JYian Basketball player. I am a JYian LEADER who happens to play basketball. 2. Our hearts have to be in whatever we do. 3. During critical periods, a leader is not allowed to feel sorry for himself, to be down, to be angry or to be weak. We must beat those emotions. 4. Discipline is doing what we are supposed to do, in the best possible manner, at the time we are supposed to do it. 5. There are 5 fundamental qualities that make a great team.
44
Communication, trust, collective responsibility, care and pride. Each is like a separate finger in a fist, individually important and unbeatable when together. 45
Football
vision: A sporting community of JYian footballers who aspire to achieve more and inspire others with their strength of character. MISSION: - To encourage a vibrant team spirit amongst the school population, regardless of background, race or stream - To use the CCA as a platform for students to achieve greater exposure to tactical knowledge, camaraderie in the soccer fraternity and refereeing capabilities This year has been momentuous for Juying Football. For the first time, both our C and B Division teams made it to the 2nd round of the West Zone Inter-School Football Championships 2015. Through their perseverance and discipline on the field, our boys kept the Juying flag flying high . This would not have been possible without the care and guidance of our CCA teachers-in-charge- Mr Lee Kah Hong, Mr Ong Hok Beng and Mr Hanan. More notably, our teacher and coach, Mr Sies Senan had led the team with his tactical knowledge of the game and was the reason behind our teams’ successful run in this year’s tournament.
Netball
Active and gracious netballers with excellent sportsmanship To develop a driven and committed team competent in netball skills and leadership qualities, in a caring and supportive environment. The year began with the netball girls training hard for the annual West Zone Tournaments. Despite injuries and tough opponents, they displayed strong resilience and teamwork, beating several schools and obtaining personal bests. The M1 Challenge followed closely after, where our ‘C’ Division played very well and clinched the Silver medal! Though trainings were tough, netballers maintained discipline and never failed to encourage one another. Through perspiration, challenges, and tears at times, they have developed leadership, forged strong bonds and created fond memories. Netball also has a team of enthusiastic seniors, who are actively involved in friendly matches with the juniors. We look forward to more bonding at the year-end ‘Sports Camp’, and greater achievements next year!
Our C boys’ team, Juying Galacticos, has also clinched 2nd place in the Sports ‘Xperience Street Soccer Tournament 2015 @ Ulu Pandan CC, which witnessed them compete against 32 other teams across Singapore. It was also significant as we had sent in a competitive girls’ team for the first time in this competition! Despite bowing out in the round-robin stage, we recorded our first 1-0 win against the team from Hong Kah Secondary School! Well done Juying Football! We will also be organizing the Combined Sports Camp in November where the boys will plan a tournament for 6 primary schools in our cluster. Through this camp, we hope to reach out to more aspiring footballers, share and learn through our interactions with other CCA members. May Juying Football continue to build on our successes and attain greater achievements in the coming year! Majulah Juying! 46

We aim to broaden our aesthetic skills through learning journeys to the Singapore Art Museum and to the on-site sculpture at Marina Bay Sands which represents the current issues around the world through the artistic interpretation of modern artists. Art Club members gave expression to their creativity at the SG50 Art Competition at Frontier Community Centre where Juven Quak of Class 2A1 won the first prize and Heather Ng of Class 2A1 received a consolation prize. Art works of our clubbers were also selected for the ‘UNESCO Art Education Week Cyber Exhibition’ based on the theme ‘Save the Earth’. Our artists Juven Quak from 2A1, Heather Ng from 2A1, Nurhijannah from 2T1, Alicia Lim from 2A2 and Denise Francesca from 1E2 has added jewels to the crown again. Some of the wonderful artworks had been put up around the school compound. Their efforts beautified school milieu. ELDDS
Our Mission To nurture every ELDDS member into a confident and creative member, who is able to express himself/herself articulately in the realm of oratory and dramatization via the use of English. In line with our targets & objectives, the ELDDS ‘hit the ground running’ by putting up a skit during the February 2015 Chinese New Year celebration. The skit ensured that the two themes of Chinese New Year and Total Defence Day were merged. More importantly, the skit involved both the senior members and the new members from Secondary One. The members found the experience of staging a skit in front of the whole school a rewarding one. Besides the usual drama sessions where the members practiced various skills in basic acting and speech, we polished our skills by attending a professional drama training session at the Drama Club. Here members were introduced to Shakespeare’s The Tempest and had to come up with a short skit in groups. Prior to this, the members were shown video clips of the play to get them prepared for the session.
For the weekly sessions, the members are trained to write short skits based on selected themes. They are also taught about stage positioning, the use of props and the creative adorning of costumes. Besides these, the proper use of voice when acting is emphasised. An outing to the West Coast Park was organised with the members planning games that were related to drama skills. They also used this time to get to know one another better. The members truly found it meaningful and enjoyable. 48

SECONDARY 1 Promoting greening at JYSS is the focus for Secondary One Green Club activities this year. Special attention is given to the landscaping of our school. The Secondary 1 members dedicate their attention to look after and maintain the plants and green areas of our school on a regular basis. They are also responsible for beautifying other areas in the school including the staff toilets and taking charge of the Green Wave 2015 event. This year, to celebrate the Green Wave 2015, our SAC chairman, Dr Ong Ann Tee, planted a Tembusu plant near the entrance gate. SECONDARY 2 Water is the theme of Secondary Two Green Club activities for this year. Secondary 2 members were given the experience of doing research to come up with a plan of how to filtrate water. One of the trials they did was to make use of fruit skin/peels to filtrate soil water. Even though it was unsuccessful, it was a good learning experience to recognise the difficulties involved in this important yet challenging task which is prevalent worldwide. Through this process, they also learnt about the various water issues faced by different countries worldwide. They were also brought out to Jurong Park to participate in the water trail activities and to experience what it takes to be a guide at Jurong Park. They were exposed to the flora and fauna present and also how they are able to make use of certain apparatus to test for the water quality. Research on various water ideas was done by students for them to reflect on which idea stands out the most to them. Students 50
are also exposed to various news articles to keep them informed on local and world water issues. The Secondary 2 members participated in the poster competition held by NEA which was anchored on Reduce, Recycle and Reuse. Winning entries will be used on poster designs and distributed to the community. SECONDARY 3 & 4 To keep to the vision of The Green Club on the 3Rs, the Upper Secondary members are involved with the recycling activities both within the school as well as with our partner, Tzu Chi Foundation. The members collect the unused papers weekly around the school and participate in Tzu Chi Recycling Event. The Green Club members help Tzu Chi volunteers to sort out the recyclable item at the designated recycling points.
IT/Media Club provides a platform for students to pick up knowledge and skills in the domains of audiovisual, robotics and photography. In the Audio Visual and Public Address domain (AV/PA), students undergo rigorous on-the-job training while supporting activities and events. Our training includes equipment orienteering, handling and troubleshooting, technical handling tests, teambuilding (Lower Secondary) and manpower management (Upper Secondary). In an effort to mould future leaders, current Presidents and Vice Presidents of the club are given the autonomy to run CCA training under the watchful eyes of the teachers-in-charge who facilitate the CCA.
Our Upper Secondary members organised The Green Spark, a termly upcycling project, aims to share with fellow JYians some simple ways to reuse materials and reduce our carbon footprint. By conducting a mini-workshops to interested participants, the Green Club members inspired other JYians to repurpose and reuse the unused items creatively. This year the Upper Secondary Green Club members have conducted three upcycling projects: - Plastic Bottle Zipper Container - Corrugated Board Frame Craft - Bottle Cap Checkers These activities encourage and empower students to make a positive difference on planet earth for generations to come.
In the Computational Thinking and Robotics (CT-R) domain, students are trained to program and debug a picomouse through theory and practical lessons. Band
Objective To develop responsibility, confidence appreciation for music and team spirit through performance and involvement in a thriving musical community.
Singapore Youth Festival ARTs Presentation 2015 As with many other school bands in Singapore, the focus of the JYSS Symphonic Band was on performing well at the Singapore Youth Festival 2015. Right from the early months of the year, band practices were intense and focussed on perfecting the skills of every band member. Despite the tough competition, we managed to perform to our expectations and attain the Certificate of Accomplishment at the Singapore Youth Festival Arts Presentation 2015. This was indeed a sweet fruit to the arduous labour of our band members! Speech Day 2015 In conjunction with the nation’s celebration of SG 50, Juying Secondary School’s 20th anniversary, Speech Day 2015 was a prestigious event with educators and pioneer educators gracing the occasion. The JYSS Symphonic Band had the honour of entertaining the crowd with popular tunes by such as a medley of songs by One Direction and ‘Stand Up for Singapore’. It was indeed an honour and a privilege to perform at this extremely meaningful event.
National Day Nanyang Observance Ceremony Celebrating the nation’s 50th birthday this year proved to be significant for the JYSS Symphonic band as well, performing for an audience of residents and students from the entire Nanyang GRC at the National Day Nanyang Observance Ceremony. Being responsible for the parade march past and inspection melody, the JYSS Symphonic Band put in their utmost efforts to ensure the precise coordination of both contingents and guests of honour to the music. It will certainly be a long-lasting memory for the band members. 57
CHINESE NEW YEAR CELEBRATION
18 FEBRUARY 2015
Juying ushered in Chinese New Year (CNY) 2015 with a joint celebration for Total Defence Day (TDD). The celebration commenced with the Chinese Calligraphy writing by Mr Seet and our partners; Mr Sam Ng Say Peng (SAC) and Mdm Misnah Bte Tokijah (JPSG). The writing of the lovely artworks symbolised the welcoming of the Year of the Goat and ushering in prosperity. This year, the teachers and students performed the customary act of exchanging oranges and red packets. This tradition teaches the students the importance of showing respect and maintaining good relationships. In commemorating TDD, the ELDDS presented a skit portraying the invasion of the Japanese during Chinese New Year in 1942. In relation to the theme for this year, “Our SAF, Giving Strength to Our Nation”, this skit serves to remind us about not taking the peacefulness of Singapore for granted. Everyone has a part to play in keeping the nation safe and peaceful. The concert kicked off with the Fashion Show where class representatives paraded on stage in their festive costumes. We were honoured to have our pioneer teachers, Mrs Choong, Mr Sies and Mr Billy Goh as the judges for the fashion show. Secondary 4E1 students amused the audience with an uproarious performance of Three Sentences and A Half (三句半表演). The Cultural Dance swept us away with their elegant and graceful dance movements, and our Choir enchanted us with their vibrant chorals. We were also enthralled by the melodious voices of our teachers, Mr Dayan Tan, Mr Lee Kah Hong, Ms Seleena and Ms Yang Wenqing. A video presentation featuring staff and students’ well wishes for Chinese New Year was also shown. The highlight of the concert was the appearance of the God of Fortune (played by Mr Rajes Kumar), who showered the students with sweet blessings.
FITNESS RUN AND INTERNATIONAL FRIENDSHIP DAY 17 APRIL 2015 On 17th April, our Fitness Run was held at the Singapore Discovery Centre (SDC) and SAFTI Military Institute. We were extremely proud to partner both SDC and SAFTI MI for this event where students viewed international friendship day exhibits at SDC before their 2.4km race at SAFTI MI. This was a new experience for our students, staff and parents. On race day, we were blessed with perfect weather in the morning and together with their teachers and parents, students were looking to clock their best timings for the 2.4km route. Isotonic beverages were also kindly sponsored by 100-Plus to help us cool down at the end of the run. Our two emcees for the day, Miss Lynette Wong and Mr Yeo Yong Kiat enthusiastically hyped up the crowd and led the respective cohorts in the cheers. Psyched up by all the cheering, the students warmed up and got ready. Our Principal, Mr Seet Tiat Hee then flagged off the various categories. Like previous years, our students, teachers and parents displayed their resilience and competitive spirit during the run. It was encouraging to see smiles on all the runners’ faces during the event. There were students who clocked impressive timings worthy of mention. Muhammad Thaqif of 4T1 clocked the fastest time of 8 minutes 56 seconds for the boys and Rozene Yap of 2E2 clocked the fastest time of 11 minutes 6 seconds for the girls. Competition between the cohorts was intense this year. After tallying the scores, Secondary One Andes cohort emerged as the Champion cohort for Fitness Run 2015! We believe all participants had an educational learning experience at SDC and an enriching run at SAFTI MI. Congratulations to all who completed the race and all the prize winners!
The concert ended with the singing of CNY and TDD songs.

HARI RAYA CELEBRATION 21 July 2015
Sports Carnival cum Colours Award cum National Day Celebration Ceremony
Juying Secondary School celebrated Hari Raya and Racial Harmony Day (RHD) on 21st July 2015 and we are honoured to celebrate this happy occasion with our guests from Hong Kong. The Malay students from 3E1 and 3E2 kick started the celebration with a Hari Raya song entitled “Setahun Sekali”. This year, the celebration took JYians on a journey around the world to catch a glimpse of how Muslims from different parts of the globe celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri. It was a journey aimed to build understanding and appreciation of different cultures, customs and traditions; complementing the essence of Racial Harmony. The journey took us down memory lane whereby JYians revisited the purpose and meaning of RHD. We were brought back to the nostalgic eras of the 1960s to 2000s, witnessing how Hari Raya was celebrated then. The Fashion Show drew the most cheer from the audience. Teacherstudent representatives from each class paraded on stage with their colourful and unique ethnic costumes. JYians enjoyed the comical yet amusing pose displayed by their teachers and friends. This was followed by Kain Samping Tying Competition whereby a few male teachers and students were invited to participate. JYSS Cultural Dance never failed to captivate the audience with their graceful and upbeat performance. This was followed by a video presentation featuring staff and students’ well wishes on Hari Raya Aidilfitri. The concert ended off with an enthusiastic sing-along performance by all the performers and teachers from MT Dept with a song entitled ‘Selamat Hari Raya’.
6 August 2015 This year’s National Day festivities were particularly momentous, as they would mark SG50 – Singapore’s milestone 50th year since independence. The theme this year is “Majulah Singapura”. The celebration of our Golden Jubilee on this special occasion calls on Singaporeans to remember our roots, reflect on our achievements over the last 50 years and anticipate the future with optimism. The celebration in Juying Secondary began with an exciting Sports Carnival for the Semi Final and Final of the Soccer, Floorball, Captainball and Eliminator Games. The preliminary round was played during the Mass PE. The Sports Carnival was organised by our very own Sec 3 CCA Student Leaders guided by Mr Lee Kah Hong. After the Sports Carnival, the students went back to their class and engaged in another interesting and meaningful activity. The students had the opportunity to build the Singapore of the Future, using the special SG50 edition LEGO sets they received on this day. The activity enabled students to explore what it means to be Singaporean and the society they want to build. The National Day Celebration cum Colours Award Ceremony started customarily with an observance ceremony led by the school’s uniformed groups, followed by the Recollections led by students from 2A2 and the National Day Message delivered by our Principal, Mr Seet Tiat Hee from the Minister for Education Mr Heng Swee Keat, which urged students – as the generation of the future – to build onward a bigger and better Singapore. The key highlight for this year is the SG 50 Charity Bears Presentation ceremony. A cheque with an auspicious sum of S$8888 was raised for Autism Association (Singapore), stemming from a project that started with the “Values-In-Action” effort by our students during our June Staff symposium. The “Adopt a Bear for Charity” (ABC) project was a joint collaboration among students, staff and parents where a total of thirty bears were handmade and auctioned in support of Autism Association. The Colours Award ceremony also took place, with awards being given out to deserving students who have done well in the area of Achievement, Leadership and Service, in recognition of their contribution and accomplishment. The climax of the day was the Grand Finale where the whole school sang along the National Day Song of 2015 by Dick Lee “OUR SINGAPORE”. The video presented along with the song highlighted our past and the contributions of key leaders, especially Lee Kuan Yew and the pioneer generation.

Juying Students’ Centre – Chillax JYians can unwind and socialise at Chillax, a recreation area created specially for them! This year, to ease the grant of stickers to students who displayed the R3IGHT values and the 7 Habits, students need to collect only 3 stickers to gain entry to Chillax! Our school is collaborating with Ms Cecilia Cortado from School Family Education (SFE), who supports by overseeing the running of Chillax during operational hours. The Chillax Committee worked with the school’s Positive School Climate (PSC) Committee to reward each winning class of the R3IGHT award (PSC) with a special Chillax session after the end-of-year examination. Creating Opportunities for the Pursuit of Excellence series (C.O.P.E.s) Objectives The workshops are planned to assist the upper secondary students to - achieve the school ‘s Character and Citizenship Education (CCE) learning outcomes. - attain the CCE skills of reflective thinking, perspective taking and responsible decision making. - practise the values of resilience and responsibility. The C.O.P.E. series of workshop was customised for the Upper Secondary Students in Term One. The students of all graduating
classes attended a total of five sessions. The Secondary Three students attended the C.O.P.E series of workshop in Terms Two and Four. In these workshops, the students learnt that it is possible to turn our own imperfect circumstances, insecurities and weaknesses into a source of strength and to overcome adversities. They learnt that being successful is about self-actualisation, being able to achieve personal growth and live a fulfilling and purposeful life in accordance with our personal values and aspirations. The students explored, clarified and strengthened their personal motivations for wanting to be successful. The students were also taught good learning skills, techniques and habits that will enhance their long-term learning effectiveness and academic performance.
NTUSU-BP Mentoring Programme Since 2012, the school has been participating actively in the NTUSU-BP Mentoring Programme organised by the Student Union in Nanyang Technological University (NTU). The eight weeks of NTUSU-BP Mentoring Programme in Semester One was for selected students from Secondary 3 Express, 4 Express, 4 Normal Academic and 5 Normal Academic classes. In this programme, the students received academic coaching in their “N” or “O” Level Mathematics and Sciences subjects from the mentors. The mentors chosen were mainly the Science and Engineering undergraduates from NTU who are equipped with the necessary knowledge to guide their mentees in their academic work. The ratio for the mentor and mentees is 1:2 thus allowing the mentor to give more attention and help to our students. 66
Positive School Climate (PSC) Awards To give recognition to students for exhibiting the R3IGHT values The Juying Secondary Positive School Climate (PSC) awards are a set of awards that give recognition to our students for exhibiting the school R3IGHT values. A total of 23 students, who represented their respective classes, were presented the Most Proactive Student awards this year in Term Two. They exemplified the ideal student in Juying Secondary through their actions within and out of the classroom, such as following up with their classmates who were absent from class. To recognise the collective efforts of classes that contributed to the overall positive school culture, the Most Proactive Class awards were also given to each level. It has truly been an encouraging year to see our JYians living out the school values!

Education and Career Guidance (ECG)
Objectives: - To provide an environment for the continued acquisition of skills and habits to ensure success in school - To help students identify their skills, interest and values - To facilitate career exploration from varied sources - To provide information and guidance on continuing education, that is relevant to their career aspirations The ECG team provides a variety of platforms to help JYians in the development of attitudes, skills and selfknowledge that will enable them to explore, understand and make informed decisions with regard to their own potential and prospective careers.
Objectives of Event - To provide opportunities for Juying students to experience authentic learning in a foreign environment. - To develop resilience, independence and self-reliance through a Trips for International Experience (TIE) experience. - To develop social emotional learning through Values-in Action (VIA) experience - To develop cultural sensitivity, awareness and a globalised perspective of the world.
Apart from the Values-in-Action activities that we had there, there were educational moments for our students. To enhance cultural awareness, students visited the Ben Thanh market where we observed the daily lives of the locals. We also left our footprints in the War Remnants Museum, Reunification Palace, Water Puppet Theatre Show and the Cu Chi Tunnels. The 3E2 students also managed to be master chefs when they prepared and cooked the dishes for their dinner. All in all, our JYians felt great to be able to impact the lives of others. We look forward to more of such enriching opportunities in future.
This year, our Secondary 3 students went to a few countries for their Trips For International Experience (TIE). These trips took place during end of May till early June.
ACE 2015 We organised in-house Academic and Career Exhibition (ACE) 2015 on 29th of June for the graduating students. Through this interactive platform (World-Cafe style), JYians were able to glean knowledge of the numerous courses offered by the various higher learning institutions and well as the prospects of furthering their studies beyond diplomas and ‘A’ Level.
Classes 3E1 3E2 3A1 and 3T1 3A3
2-Day Polytechnic Attachment Programme Interested Upper Secondary students were given the opportunity to experience polytechnic life through the 2-Day Polytechnic Attachment Programme. The students gained an insight of Polytechnic education through the interactive workshops and simulated lectures that they attended. DPA Special Programme The ECG Committee also organised the DPA Special Programme for the students. Graduating students attended structured workshops on a 600-character DPA write-up as well as Interviewing Skills and Strategies. Through these varied platforms and exposure, JYians were able to make informed decisions regarding their plans for the future. Parent-Teacher Conference (PTC) Partnership between the home and the school is crucial in the development of a child. A strong communication between the teacher and parent will enable the child to succeed, have a strong confidence and to achieve better academic results. The biannual parent-teacher conferences are useful platforms to foster this partnership.
TIE Country Yogyakarta, Indonesia Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam Phnom Penh, Cambodia Shantou, China
These trips enriched our JYians’ lives as the VIA activities taught them many heartfelt lessons as well as showed them exactly how the locals lead their daily lives in the respective countries. For instance, 3E2 students who went to Vietnam completed their VIA activities in an orphanage known as Thu Duc Youth Village. Our students babysat the children, fed them and even chaperoned them for their vaccination. Our JYians took pride in folding clothes and diapers as well as engaged the children in bonding games. Beyond these tasks, our students painted the orphanage and conducted English lessons. We were gratified to see the joy and excitement expressed by the children when our team organised a farewell party for the children. Before our departure, we replenished the stationery and provisions for the village home with the funds raised by 3E2.
During the parent-teacher conference, time was spent discussing on ways to help the child improve and develop holistically. Apart from updating the parents on the child’s mid-year academic results, social emotional issues were also discussed. Goals were revisited and strategies to reach these targets were deliberated during the conference.
Time-Out Programme (T.O.P.) This year’s Time-Out Programme (T.O.P.) adopts a targeted approach towards addressing the different needs of our at-risk students. Three main groups of students were identified – students likely to benefit from mentoring from teachers, students requiring professional counselling to cope with addiction issues, and students requiring guidance from the police. The three-pronged approach seeks to raise the social-emotional competencies of the participants so as to help them overcome personal, family or social barriers that may confound their motivation towards schooling and hinder their performance in learning. While they undergo different programmes and activities, mass fun-filled activities were also organised to provide platforms for participants and staff to build lasting relationships beyond the classrooms and to enhance their overall schooling experience. 68

Student Leaders’ Investiture 6 APRIL 2015 This year’s Student Leaders’ Investiture is a first of its kind in the history of Juying Secondary School, where the three main groups of student leaders are given recognition nd officiated in a single formal event. The three groups of student leaders this year, comprise the prefects, CCA leaders and the class leaders. These student leaders have been carefully selected based on the criteria of 4As, namely Attire, Attitude, Academic and Attendance. This event was made possible by the
collaboration between the SLD/OE team as well as the form teachers and HOD PE/CCA. The involvement of the three groups of student leaders signifies a shift towards encouraging more JYians to take up leadership positions in the school and to ensure proper leadership training and development during their journey as a leader in Juying Secondary School. With a greater pool and presence of student leaders, we look forward to a better learning and conducive environment for all our JYians.
On 28th and 29th of May , a group of Secondary 3 students completed a meaningful Values-in-Action (VIA) project by creating 12 hand-made bears. The students were taught by a parent volunteer, Mrs Karen Seah to make the bears. Each bear is unique and bears a birth certificate. The students decided to sell the bears for charity and identified Autism Association (Singapore) as the beneficiary. As the demand for the bears was over-whelming, the entire staff gathered during the Staff Symposium on 26th of June to make more bears for this charitable act. We have named this initiative “Adopt a Bear for Charity.” We managed to find adopters for all the bears and raised $8888 for Autism Association (Singapore). The cheque presentation ceremony took place in school during National Day Celebration on 6th of Aug. It was indeed a creative and meaningful fund raising activity for the JYian family.

W3 CLUSTER SKY CAMP FOR PRIMARY SCHOOLS 2015 The Student Leaders from Juying Secondary School organized the W3 Cluster SKY Camp for the student leaders in the primary schools in the W3 zone annually.
displayed the camp values, which eventually influenced the primary school student leaders. Evaluation was done at the end of the camp and it was very positive.
The objectives of project are as follows : 1. Instil confidence and hone leadership skills of primary school student leaders. 2. Instil confidence and spirit of teamwork among primary school student leaders. 3. Develop a spirit of excellence in the student leaders by setting high standards in their service and contribution to the school. 4. Facilitate transmission of good moral values from the secondary school student leaders to the primary school student leaders, vice versa through mentoring during the camp.
The secondary school student leaders had come up with an interesting theme and various exciting activities, which keep the primary school student leaders motivated and engaged. They enjoyed learning through physical activities instead of classroom activities and this had certainly helped to keep them involved.
W3 Primary Schools Sports Competition 2015
At the end of the 2-day camp, the primary school student leaders were observed to be more confident and they were able to take charge of their own discussion and presentation. They were also able to share their ideas and carry out activities together as a team. The secondary school student leaders also Juying Secondary School organized a sports competition for the W3 primary schools on 19 November 2015. The objectives of the event are as follows : 1. A platform for skills and knowledge exchange exchange amongst W3 cluster primary schools 2. To enable JYian athletes to demonstrate values-in-action (VIA) through planning and organizing the sports event As part of their Sports Camp 2015 VIA, our JYian athletes worked together to organise the first W3 Primary School Sports Competition held in Juying Secondary School. Our school Principal, Mr Seet Tiat Hee, gave the opening address, where he encouraged all athletes to put in their best effort, and to

enjoy and learn in the process. The event kicked off with JYian athletes leading the warm-up sessions. This was followed by the competition proper, whereby four different sporting events took place simultaneously, creating a buzz of excitement and hyping up the atmosphere greatly. Our young athletes, clad in colourful school jerseys, displayed great talents, resilience, and sportsmanship. Students and teachers from the various schools also interacted and exchanged news, enabling the fostering of bonds and building of friendships. Finally, the event ended with a prize presentation and a combined photograph taking session of the W3 family, where the many beaming and shining faces told us that everyone had enjoyed the event indeed. Well done, JYian athletes!

14th Singapore – Hong Kong Exchange Programme 2015 This 14th Singapore – Hong Kong Exchange Programme 2015 was an initiative between the Hong Kong Education Bureau (HK-EDB) and Singapore’s Ministry of Education (MOE). The annual exchange programme was first carried out in 2000 with 6 secondary schools from both countries with the following objectives: • To promote cultural exchange between participating schools. • To provide opportunities for students to broaden their perspectives, learn social and language skills, and cultivate respect for differences in culture.
Through my experience in the first leg of the programme, I learnt that taking care of someone was challenging and involved a lot of difficulties and responsibilities. I started appreciating my parents for their never-ending love and care towards my sister and I. I developed a deeper respect for my parents. For Herman, I had also started to become fond of him. After Herman returned to Hong Kong, I started to get ready for my return trip to Hong Kong in November. While it was only four months away, it felt like an eternity. Finally, it was the day for me to fly over to Hong Kong with the rest of the Singapore delegates for the return leg of the programme.
When I was nominated to participate in the 14th Singapore – Hong Kong Exchange Programme 2015, I was not really interested. However, the teacher in-charge, Mr Rudie, encouraged me not to give this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity a miss. Hence, I went home and asked my sister what the programme was all about. (My sister was also nominated for participation in the 12th Singapore – Hong Kong Exchange Programme 2013)
When I reached Hong Kong, I received a warm and pleasant welcome and when Herman picked me up, he told me that his mum had booked a restaurant for a welcome dinner. I was shocked to hear that, and I started thinking about the excitement of the next 10 days of homestay with him and his parents.
Upon learning about the programme, I started to get very excited and I wanted to be involved in the programme. We had many briefings and preparatory sessions before the programme. For example, we had to learn basic Hong Kong culture, some conversational Cantonese, as well as the mass dance which we had to share with our buddies during the programme.
I followed Herman to school daily, and participated in all his school’s activities, just like how Herman joined me in the school activities in the first leg of the programme. I found out that Kings College was a very good school, an all boys’ school which developed students holistically as leaders and learners. The school also had very high expectations of it students.
I was thankful for the teachers’ support and encouragement throughout the months of preparation.
The 10 days passed in the blink of an eye. I enjoyed every moment we had together, going for runs in the evening, challenging each other to take the “loopy” roller-coaster ride, and the wonderful meals that Herman’s parents prepared for me.
Finally, the Hong Kong students arrived in Singapore for the first leg of the programme. I had to pick up my buddy, Herman. I had communicated with him over social media over the past months, and I was really feeling very excited about meeting him face to face. When I picked him up at Beatty Secondary School, I was very shy and felt awkward as I never had to take care of people whom I did not know much about. In the 14 days of the homestay programme which followed, I began to appreciate what it was to be a good buddy to someone else, and to take care of him. We had our little fights and misunderstandings, but these little fights and misunderstandings only served to strengthen our relationship as buddies. We learnt more about each other, our cultures and practices and became better and best of buddies. On his last day in Singapore, I accompanied him to the Universal Studio Sentosa and he was extremely happy. We took roller coaster rides together and screamed till our spirits soared high. Till this day, I still cherished those wonderful moments we had.
76
On the last day, many of the students involved in the programme cried and I was about to cry too as I knew I would definitely miss my buddy. The experiences of the 14th Singapore - Hong Kong Exchange Programme 2015 helped me learn the values, such as resilience, respect and graciousness, and competencies, such as crosscultural communication skills. Through the experiences, we have built networks and strong bonds amongst the participating students from Singapore, as well as the participating students from Hong Kong. Today, I am still in touch with Herman and we look forward to our reunion in the near future. Reflections by Brandon Chua (Sec 2E1)

Together we build a gracious community with care in partnership with our SAC.
MISSION
We seek to renew and strengthen the four key wellness aspects of our staff, namely, body, brain, heart and soul. We are committed to helping the school look after the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being and high morale of staff members working hand in glove with our School Advisory Committee. We plan and organize recreational events and activities that will contribute to meeting these needs.
The SWC, with the support of the SAC, looks into the wellbeing of the staff members of JYSS. In November 2014, the SWC organised a two-day, one-night staff retreat to Pulai Spring Resort in Johor Bahru to rejuvenate after working so hard for the year. We had a lot of fun participating in bonding games, enjoying the recreational facilities and having a fabulous buffet dinner. In February 2015, a Chinese New Year ‘Lo Hei’ with some members of the SAC present, was carried out for all staff to celebrate the occasion together. In September this year, the staff had a great time at Miramar Hotel celebrating our Teachers’ and EAS’ Day. The theme, “If I were not a teacher, I would be…”, to enable the staff to discover another side of themselves, was chosen in consultation with all staff. We also gave out the “I3” (Inspiring Learning, Impacting Lives and Inculcating Values) and the “R3IGHT”(Responsibility, Resilience, Respect, Integrity, Graciousness, Humility and Teamwork) Awards to staff during the Teachers’ Day Dinner. Our talented teachers also conducted classes for the staff during the post-exam activities period. Ms Sonia and Mdm Hui conducted a cooking class for the staff.
82
The SWC had also organised a series of Sales@Lounge for the staff to indulge in some retail therapy. “Fruit Day” was held fortnightly to remind all the staff to eat more fruits and to stay healthy always. We would especially like to thank the SAC for their enthusiastic and generous support in all our staff events and activities.

Once A JYian Always A JYian Alumni Activities Juying Secondary School values every student – both past and present. In our midst, we have more than 125 JYians who have updated their contact particulars with us at our JYian portal and have kept the valuable relationship strong. One of the objectives of setting up the JYian Alumni is to present opportunities for JYian family members to bond and network. It also serves as a good platform for our Alumni members to contribute their effort and show concern for JYians who need all the guidance and support they can get. To encourage greater partnership, we have created a new Facebook account and the first bonding session will be held during the school’s Teachers’ Day celebration. We hope you will join us in such bonding sessions. Always Remember: Once a JYian Always a JYian!
