Likewise, we wish for Juying to be our pupils’ oyster. We are a nurturing family for pupils of all abilities and backgrounds as we believe that every pupil is unique and every pupil can learn. We aspire to enhance and amplify the individual talents of all pupils, and develop them to be persons with strength of character, such that they may, like pearls, shine and illuminate any organisation they may enter in the future.”

Message from

The SAC Chairman

I

have been serving as the Chairman of the School Advisory Committee for 19 years, and with the school’s blessings and support, I have recently been conferred the Public Service Star (Bintang Bakti Masyarakat – BBM). I feel honoured to be able to serve the school and be part of the journey in its pursuit for excellence in both the academic and character domains.

Over the years, I have witnessed the growth of Juying Secondary School under the leadership of four different principals. The recent improvement and positive changes in the school under

the leadership of the current principal, Mr Seet Tiat Hee, have indeed been very encouraging for the JYian community. I am very pleased and proud to be part of Juying’s latest achievements – increase in number of P6 pupils who have chosen Juying Secondary as their top 3 choices and the outstanding value-added academic achievements at the 2013 GCE O Levels examinations for both the Express and Normal Academic streams. Of special mention is the Sec 5NA cohort whose achievement of L1B4 is even better than the national average! These achievements are definitely testament to the fact that Juying Secondary is a Good School and is en route to being a Great School! Such achievements would not have been possible without the dedication and commitment of the

school leaders, teachers and staff of Juying. Needless to say, parents whose children are studying in Juying Secondary School can be assured that their children are well placed to receive a StudentCentred Values Driven education under a nurturing and caring staff who strongly embrace the school’s H.E.A.R.T.S. ethos. I am confident that under the leadership of Mr Seet, together with the competent and caring staff and supportive parents, Juying Secondary will certainly achieve Academic Excellence, Character Excellence, Staff Excellence and Partnership Excellence. Together we will succeed! Dr Ong Ann Tee, BBM Chairman School Advisory Committee Juying Secondary School

Message from

The Principal

T

he re-envisioning journey that we embarked on last year has brought about many positive changes and results in the school, bringing joy to parents, staff and students. One improvement is the Academic valueadded results in the 2013 GCE O level examinations for both the Express and Normal streams. It was a great affirmation of our teachers’ hard work and a great morale booster for them as they finally saw the fruits of their labour. In this Yearbook, you will get to see the various initiatives and programmes that we have put in place vis-à-vis our Strategic Thrusts and Sean Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens. We have also organised this Yearbook to be in line with our H.E.A.R.T.S. ethos that seeks to bring about a culture of Care and Learning in Juying Secondary. Our ethos is as follows:

High Expectations and Standards. We have raised our bar in all that we do to allow our staff and students to strive and scale new heights in both the academic and non-academic domains. We inspire them to “begin with the end in mind”, and work towards their goals and aspirations.

Shared purpose. Our shared mission “Inspiring Learning, Inculcating Values, Impacting Lives” aptly summarises our heartbeat in preparing JYians to be future-ready so that they can be life-long learners with R3IGHT values to impact the community.

Emphasis on Learning. Our teachers place strong emphasis on how students learn via 7 research-based learning principles. They constantly remind our pupils to “be proactive” in their decision making and to “put first things first” so that learning and reflection take priority.

Placing our students at the heart of everything that we do and with a strong culture of Care and Learning, guided by our H.E.A.R.T.S. ethos, we believe that Juying Secondary School is the right school for the development of a gracious community of life-long learners with strength of character.

Autonomy to explore and innovate. Teachers are given the autonomy, time and space to explore new teaching pedagogies and new ways of doing things to provide a wholesome learning experience for JYians.

Mr Seet Tiat Hee Principal Juying Secondary School

Relationship building. Staff collegiality and quality relationship building are our key strengths and we build on them to further strengthen our relationship with our parents, students and the community to raise JYians up to be responsible citizens. Trust & Teamwork. We build trust and emphasise team building within and across departments so that together we synergise as Team Juying. Our teachers and students are also trained to think win-win all the time so as to uphold our school motto “Together we will succeed”.

Speech & Prize Giving Day

Principal’s Address 19th Speech Day, 28th March 2014 Guest-of-Honour Supt Rachel Soh Commanding Officer, Nanyang NPC Jurong Police Division

G

ood afternoon. Last year, I spoke on What Makes Juying a Good School.

After a year of grit and determination through the re-envisioning exercise with my staff, we have revised our vision, mission & values to better position Juying as a school that prepares her students for the challenges of the 21st century world. Juying’s brand of education is not what we do to our students. Instead, it is what we do WITH them and FOR them to bring out the best in each of them so that every JYian is an Inspired LEARNER and a values-driven LEADER with strength of character. This is the core of Juying’s brand of Student-Centric, Values-Driven Education. Let me unpack this a little bit more: We envisage JYians to be – A Gracious Community of Lifelong Learners with Strength of Character. And to realise our vision, we have come up with our renewed mission tagline: Inspiring Learning; Inculcating Values; Impacting Lives; as we strive to prepare JYians to be future-ready and useful citizens by inspiring in them a passion for learning and inculcating the R3IGHT values. And R3IGHT stand for Responsibility, Resilience, Respect, Integrity, Graciousness, Humility and Teamwork.

28

students and develop them to be persons with strength of character. Second, we give our students a broad and holistic education, allowing them to explore their interests. In doing so, we help our students develop a strong foundation of literacy, numeracy and 21st century competencies, through which, the students themselves will make meaning of their learning, connecting different domains of knowledge and discover the joy of learning. We plant, in our students, the seeds of being a lifelong learner. Third, we instill in each child a strong core of the R3IGHT values and character, nurturing in each of them a strong commitment to Juying and to Singapore. To drive the Juying brand of StudentCentric, Values-Driven Education, we have set in motion four strategic thrusts:

Undergirding all that we do in Juying is our school philosophy – the OYSTER philosophy – one which all JYians by now are very familiar with.

The first is Achieving Academic Excellence. We are passionate about helping every single JYian to develop their potential. We aim to meet the diverse interests and talents of our JYians to allow them to pursue their strengths and passion in specific subjects beyond the boundaries of the curriculum. Through the enriching, holistic and learner-centered activities, we seek to create a community of lifelong learners where the students’ abilities, needs and interests are catered to extend their learning, develop their 21st century competencies and broaden their horizons.

First, we value every child. We believe that every child is unique AND every child can learn. We aspire to enhance and amplify the individual talents of all our

I am very pleased to announce that for last year 2013, both the Sec 4 Express and 5 NA cohorts have achieved value-added results. Even though their

average PSLE T-Score is low (4 Express: 193.7; 5 NA: 154.7), compared to the National Average, their achievements are commendable in terms of L1B5 and L1B4 respectively, which are above expectation. Outstanding results are seen in many subjects such as 4 Express: English Language (96 % Passes), Food & Nutrition (100% Passes, 25% Distinctions), Chinese Language (100% Passes, 50% Distinctions); 5NA: Additional Mathematics (100% Passes, 51% Distinctions), Mother Tongue Languages (100% Passes), just to name a few. The class of 2013 has indeed surpassed the previous cohorts in the last five years. The outstanding set of results is a testament to the consistent hard work of both the students and the teachers. Congratulations to the class of 2013 for their breakthrough achievements in the 2013 GCE O Level Examinations! In the MOE Work-Plan Seminar 2013, Minister for Education, Mr Heng Swee Kiat, announced that in line with MOE’s emphasis on a Student-Centric, ValuesDriven education, MOE will support all secondary schools to each develop an Applied Learning programme (ALP) and a Learning for Life programme (LLP) by 2017. Extra funding is given to schools to support these programmes. The (ALP) will serve to connect academic knowledge and skills with the real world. The emphasis is on the application of thinking skills, connecting knowledge across subject disciplines, stretching the imagination and applying these in authentic settings in society and industries. 29

The (LLP) will provide students with reallife experiential learning to develop their character and values, cultivate positive attitudes, self-expression and strengthen their people skills. This will be an integral aspect and a distinctive signature approach to Character and Citizenship Education (CCE). We are very proud to share that MOE has accepted our application to embark on both of these programmes. We are one of the few schools in Singapore. Our Applied Learning Programme is to Develop Confident and Competent Communicators through our Oracy Skills programme. Students will undergo oracy modules on story-telling, drama and debate. It is our dream that every JYian will have at least one opportunity throughout their stay in Juying to stand

It is how committed the students are in developing the values and character that will help them to be contributing and useful members of the society. Knowledge and skills can become outdated, but character traits of Respect, Responsibility, Resilience, Integrity, Graciousness, Humility and Teamwork will enable them to continue to thrive while they grow. And we have a rigorous Character and Citizenship Education curriculum in place to help our JYians develop from girls and boys into Ladies and Gentlemen. Our CCAs also provide a very good platform for JYians to grow and develop. It is of course the process that matters – what the students learn and instill in the midst of preparing for competitions and performances. The CCA achievements are just one of the many outcomes of

"The most critical outcome of education is not how many distinctions are achieved. It is how committed the students are in developing the values and character that will help them to be contributing and useful members of the society." in front of their fellow schoolmates and be able to speak to them confidently and competently. This I can assure you is definitely not easy. Our Learning for Life Programme is to provide students with the opportunities to experience and explore different dances and the playing of different musical instruments such as keyboard and guzheng. Our LLP known as iACE@Juying (iACE@ Juying stands for I Appreciate, I Create, I Exhibit at Juying) is just one of the many platforms that the school adopts to promote character development under our second strategic thrust of Achieving Character Excellence. The most critical outcome of education is not how many distinctions are achieved. 30

the students’ learning processes in our various CCAs last year. At this juncture, I would like to share with you some of our key achievements for our CCAs in 2013. Our IT & Media Club emerged champion in the 20th Singapore Robotics Games 2013 (Picomouse Competition) and the 3rd Interschool Picomouse Competition. Just yesterday, the team emerged champion in the Engineering Explorer Competition at Ngee Ann Poly. Well done IT&Media Club!

in the 2013 Singapore Youth Festival Presentation. Our Hip Hop Group was awarded the Certificate of Distinction for their fabulous presentation. Our Cultural Dance and Band were awarded the Certificate of Accomplishment. For our Choir, in addition to their achievement of the Certificate of Commendation at the Singapore Youth Festival Presentation, they achieved a Pass with Distinction at the ABRSM Examination. Juying was also conferred the National Arts Education GLOW Award 2013. This is in recognition of the school’s holistic arts education, good aesthetics programmes and positive student outcomes. Our Uniformed Groups, comprising both the National Cadet Corps (Sea) and the National Civil Defence Cadet Corp, achieved the Bronze award for the Best Unit Competition and the Unit Overall Proficiency Award respectively. Our Netball girls were just as spectacular in the M1 School Challenge League as they achieved Silver in the competition. These achievements did not come by easily. They are only possible because JYians made it so. They trained hard, put their minds, hearts and souls, and they showed everyone what they are capable of – this is what makes Juying a school of choice. To enable us to do all these, we need a team of teaching and non-teaching staff who are caring, competent and empowered. And that brings us to our third strategic thrust on Staff Excellence – developing caring, competent and empowered staff. The teachers and staff members embrace the school HEARTS ethos, striving towards the culture of care and learning with our students and for our students. HEARTS stands for •

setting High expectations and standards;

placing strong Emphasis on learning;

Our Strategic Games Club were also champions in the Singapore Polytechnic Battle of the Wits (International Chess).

having the Automony to explore and innovate;

building quality Relationships;

establishing Trust through Teamwork

In the Aesthetics, the school’s Performing Arts groups have done wonderfully well

collaborations; and having a Shared purpose.

Our staff are recognized for their commitment to excellence in education. We have a family of caring teachers who work very hard to cater to our JYians’ needs. Today, I am very proud to share that five of our teachers were accorded the Caring Teacher Award 2014 - Mdm Mak Wai Han, Mdm Norhafiani, Mdm Rozana, Mr Cai Zhiwen and Mrs Amy Yeo. This award is given by the National Institute of Education to affirm teachers’ efforts in their work. Our non-teaching staff are just as committed to Juying. They support the efforts of the teachers quietly behind the scene. They are the silent heroes who have also given their heart and soul to the school. It is Juying’s honour that two of our staff members, one teaching staff, Mrs Sophia Ang and the other, a non-teaching staff, Mdm Hui Loow Tai, were recognized for their dedication, through the Excellent Service Award (Silver) by SPRING Singapore. Mdm Hui, has also been accorded the MOE Service Excellence Award 2014. These staff members will be presented their awards this evening. Congratulations! George Santayana, a philosopher, once said, “A child educated only at school is an uneducated child.” We need parents and community partners to make this journey with us. When our parents and community partners are equally inspired as us to facilitate learning, children are the winners. And hence our final strategic thrust in supporting us to fulfill our mission and realise our vision is to build Supportive Partnerships with our various stakeholders. Our School Advisory Board has also grown and given the school the tremendous lift in our work. The school could roll out initiatives such as the Secondary 1 Scholarship because our Board members have placed their faith and trust in Juying’s brand of education with dedication and contribution of resources and initiatives. We are very thankful and appreciative that we have the support of our parents. Our Juying Parent Support Group executive committee was formed in 2013 and they have supported our students

"Indeed Juying is the oyster for our JYians. Our JYians are the grains of sand of different sizes and backgrounds which have come into this oyster. We are committed to be here today on a shared mission: Inspiring Learning, Inculcating Values, Impacting Lives. " and teachers in numerous key events, including motivating our Sec 4/5 students during the GCE O level examination by making sandwiches for them during their examination break. We are also very blessed to have the support of our various community partners – Nanyang PC, Tzu Chi Foundation and Lions Club. It is definitely our honour to have Supt Rachel Goh from Nanyang NPC to be our GOH today. As a gesture of appreciation on our part, we will be presenting for the first time our Partners Award for 2 individuals and 2 organisations who have contributed to our students development and growth in the last 3 years. Mrs Candy Teo, Vice Chairman of JPSG and Mdm Misnah, are 2 very active members of the JPSG since 2012 whom we would like to honour today for their relentless commitment and support for the school’s programmes. Tzu Chi Foundation – a voluntary organization, has been sponsoring our needy students with meal and transport coupons. Recently we have also collaborated with Tzu Chi for their recycling project as part of our Sec 4/5 VIA project. The Lions Club of Singapore Jurong whose members have been sponsoring our needy students Festive Goodies Bags, and recently free spectacles for some of our students. Our heartfelt appreciation to these organizations and individuals – Thank you!

Indeed Juying is the oyster for our JYians. Our JYians are the grains of sand of different sizes and backgrounds which have come into this oyster. We are committed to be here today on a shared mission: Inspiring Learning, Inculcating Values, Impacting Lives. We are committed to our own vision: A Gracious Community of Life-Long Learners with Strength of Character. We want our JYians to acquire the R3IGHT values and we operationalize the four strategic thrusts to help us in our mission with the HEARTS ethos in a culture of care and learning. Putting all these together, we will succeed in developing JYians who will be like pearls, nurtured and cultured, adding to the vibrancy and shine of our little red dot Singapore. To all prize winners, I hope you will become or have become the cultured pearls that will shine and illuminate any organization that you join in the future. Be appreciative of the support that your parents, your school and the community have given you. When the opportunity arises, serve your parents, your school and the community with your whole heart and soul. To all parents present this evening, you are part of Team Juying. With your support and unwavering faith in the school, you have placed your trust in us and worked with us as a family. You deserve this recognition just as much as our JYians. Thank you, parents! Together we have succeeded, and we will continue to succeed in the years ahead! Thank you.

VISION

Every JYIAN an effective communicator using Standard English

Every Jyian An Effective Communicator In His/ Her Mother Tongue Language, Upholding His/ Her Cultural Values

MISSION

T

To achieve value-added results by equipping JYians with lifelong learning skills and values

To achieve better-quality grades and preserve values, cultures & traditions, as well as acquire proficiency in the Mother Tongue Languages (MTL) for communication and in daily living

o achieve our department vision of "Every JYIAN an effective communicator using Standard English", the English Language & Literature Department focused on two key aspects this year:

1. The Extensive Reading Programme (ERP): It aims to encourage students to read widely using a variety of materials. We subscribed to the Straits Times, BBC Knowledge and Present Perfect magazines. EL teachers took turns to share news articles weekly at morning assemblies. Through these, we not only exposed our students to a wide variety of topics and issues, but reinforced the teaching of school values and NE messages. In addition, our library actively promoted a love for reading through the monthly book review programmes, best class readership contests. We also scheduled library visits for each class throughout the year.

2.  The Applied Learning Programme (ALP): The department carried out the following programmes to build competent and confident speakers: a.  developing fluency and pronunciation skills through storytelling for Sec 1; b.  confidence and expression through drama for Sec 2; c.  training in public speaking skills for Sec 3. d.  Besides the training, students were given opportunities to showcase what they had learnt through performing or speaking at the school assembly programmes. One distinctive platform is the Speakers’ Corner, where students address a crowd during their recess time. Stories and newspaper articles are selected for them to read aloud. In term 3, students shared their reflections of the camps they attended. The Secondary 3 students who went on their overseas VIA trips also had the opportunity to present video logs of their learning at the assembly programme. 36

MISSION

Academic Programmes

Science

Other department programmes that have assisted our students in improving their mathematics skills include FGC (Focus Group Clinics), NTU-BP mentoring programme run by NTU undergraduates and the use of the 7-learning principles based on research on how to make students learn smarter. For students with higher ability, a 5-day training session for Math competitions was organized for them. Students sharpen their mathematical problem solving skills and were exposed to questions that are out of the textbook. They also participated in competitions and have achieved positive results for the past 3 years. In building teachers’ capacity in professional practice, a white space was set aside for Math teachers to collaborate with one another and exchange ideas. This year, a team of teachers developed a lesson package which included activity-based resources to increase engagement and enhance learning. 38

MISSION

S

E

The ICAN programme (Improving Confidence and Achievement in Numeracy) was introduced to four classes of selected students to level up their skills in numeracy. Besides attending training sessions, teachers involved in this programme were assigned mentors who guided them in making lessons more interactive and that enhances the ability of the students to retain their knowledge and skills.

Every JYian a self-directed learner, with an inquiring mind To cultivate lifelong learners with an awareness and interest in the application of Science in their daily lives

very School is a Good School’ is a mantra that the Mathematics Department at Juying Secondary School strongly believes in. At Juying Secondary School, we look into the needs of our students and cater our programmes according to our students’ ability and interest in order for each individual to achieve greater heights in his or her Mathematics education.

VISION

The lesson package on the Additional Mathematics topic, ‘Kinematics’ will then be further refined for future use. Mathematics teachers use ICT tools to help students understand mathematical concepts through visualisation. Students explored and extended their learning more easily via the e-learning platform used in Mathematics lessons. A Math trail using iPads and QR code technology was carried out for Secondary One students. Achievements 1. cience teachers are guided by our vision to develop 21st century competencies in JYians through the learning of Science. 2014 has been an exciting year for both Science teachers and JYians. Our Secondary 1 students use the Scientific Method to explore and understand their environment. Secondary 2 students undergo training to analyse different types of scientific data. Secondary 3 students integrate the skills they have learnt in lower secondary to understand and solve complex and real world problems. Our Secondary 4 and 5 students embark on the rigorous journey to master their scientific knowledge and skills to pursue opportunities at a higher level of education.

Our passionate teachers also set up enrichment programmes to develop JYians’ love for Science. Our Secondary 1 Express students make use of recycled materials to design and build space crafts during their post mid-year examination internal science competition. Secondary 2 students are encouraged to participate in competitions organised by external organisations. This year, our Secondary 2 Express students won Bronze in the W3 Science Challenge organised by Westwood Secondary School. Our Secondary 3 students learnt a meaningful lesson to love the animal species and reflect how human activities have an impact on them after watching the Titans of the Ice Age at Omnimax Theatre. Our Secondary 3 Biology students also attended a lab workshop at Science Centre to learn at greater depth, the parts of our digestive system and their functions.

3. Australian Mathematics Competition 13 Credit and 29 Proficiency Awards

Science teachers attend workshops and courses regularly to continuously increase our capacities to craft good science lessons to engage learning and invoke thinking in students. We collaborate with one another to build resources and share good teaching practices.

Congratulations to all winners who have performed well for these competitions.

We believe that passionate teachers bring about great students and student centricity is our core. 39

VISION

Every JYian a Global Citizen

T

he vision of the Humanities Department is Every JYian a Global Citizen. This is in line with the school’s vision of a gracious community of lifelong learners with strength of character. In building a community of gracious and lifelong learners, we envision to develop all JYIans into well-informed, responsible citizens with a sense of national identity and a global perspective. We hope to engage students actively to develop them into confident, self-directed, critical and reflective thinkers. To achieve these aims, it is important that students develop competence in three areas: knowledge and understanding, skills and processes, values and attitudes. We strongly believe that learning extends beyond the classroom and our learning journeys prove that there are no boundaries to our thirst for knowledge.

40

W

e hope to prepare JYians for tomorrow’s rapidly changing world by providing them with the opportunity to think creatively and thus develop an inquiring mind. In building a community of gracious and lifelong learners, we envision all JYIANs to believe in their own abilities and thus become independent learners, creative thinkers and confident team players.

VISION

Every JYian a self-directed learner, innovative individual and confident team player.

This is in alignment with the school’s OYSTER philosophy in which we believe that every student can learn, and that our objective is to provide a nurturing environment for each JYIAN to develop creative, critical thinking skills so that they will be able to “shine and illuminate any organisation they may enter in the future” with these skills required of an effective artist, nutritionist or engineer.

VISION

VISION

Every JYian a self-directed and collaborative learner through the use of IT

T

he IT Department harnesses technology to provide an enriching learning experience to all JYians. We aim to build a pervasive culture of promoting effective use of ICT into the school curriculum to enhance pedagogy that engages collaboration and self-directed learning. In order to maximise learning moments, the following programmes are being implemented: 1. E–Learning There was an e-learning day on 11th April in Term 1 to promote independent learning where students were given a platform to experience self-directed learning and collaborative learning. It also served to simulate a situation in case of school closure due to emergency situations. Lessons and homework, in the form of e-lessons, e-tutorials and e-assessments, were assigned to students who were required to stay at home to complete the tasks assigned. The use of the portal helped to facilitate self-paced mastery. Online forum was catered for learning with queries with feedback from teachers. 2.

SCRATCH Programming & Coursework All Sec 1 to 2 pupils are involved in “Code for Fun” using SCRATCH programme or Coursework (CPA) in Term 3. These are tools which integrate technology into the curriculum and develop 21st century skills. For “Code for Fun” programme, it is to provide basic coding experience to lower secondary pupils as enrichment. It is to develop and enhance logical thinking and

42

problem-solving skills through coding and storyboarding. Through this programme, we hope to enthuse and raise awareness among pupils about computing so as to groom and develop talents in this area. Pupils are also able to communicate their thoughts in eForums and are encouraged to explore new open tools online to present their reports. 3. IT Enrichment Programme (ITP) To meet the required ICT baseline standards, all lower secondary pupils undergo a compulsory IT Enrichment Programme which has been incorporated into curriculum time. The ITP comprises the working tools of Microsoft Office as well as media literacy in presentation and communciation skills for the Sec 1. An example of this, is students using Microsoft Office to prepare a script, powerpoint presentation and an oral/video podcast using iPads. Furthermore, they are taught basic web design skills through the use of a web-based design tool called Weebly. Students were given the opportunity to make use of their creative ability by learning basic photo and image editing with the use of photo-editing tools such as Paint.Net for the Sec 1s and Adobe Photoshop for the Sec 2s.To further broaden their media production experience, they are also trained in the use of the Media Studio facilities and introduced to iMovie at our iMac Lab. They are taught the fundamentals of making a video project based on a theme, which includes storyboarding, scriptwriting, video shooting/framing and editing. These encourage creative thinking as students need to come up with their original story

Objectives •

To prepare students for ITE, into courses of their choice

To focus on student’ character development

To achieve academic excellence using the real and experiential learning approach

Empowering the Normal (Technical) student for success

Secondary 1 Programme The students learned and developed skills on presentation, photo-editing, use of paint software and scratch software programmes.

and collaborative learning while working in groups to complete their video project which they are also expected to submit based on a theme from their IP subjects areas. 4. Learning Platform ICT department has initiated the use of IPads to promote self-directed learning. Learning journeys assisted by ICT have shown to spur students' interest in learning. Using QR codes; iPads with the adventure of roaming around to find out answers give the students the ‘desire’ to learn. On another front, the Learning Management System (LMS) will be used as the common platform for all communication and evaluation. Encouraging constant use of the platform allows both students and teachers quick responses to problems students may face.

Secondary 2 Programme The students learned and developed skills in mind-mapping, story boarding and video taking. They also embarked on an elective module on hospitality and tourism. Secondary 3 and 4 Programme Students experienced life in an ITE campus for a week. The Sec 3 students learnt skills on Smart Home, Building Models (3D printer) or Mobile Robot. The Sec 4 students learnt skills on Smart Home or Fun with Animation.

Through the use of technology, we hope to maximise every learning opportunity by being current, student-centered and forward looking. Written by Mr Tan Meng Hwee

Secondary One R IGHT Camp : Bonding

“ T

Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success.” – Henry Ford

he Secondary 1 students came from different primary schools, different backgrounds and certainly had different experiences. In coming together and joining the JYian family, they took the first step that marked the beginning of their journey ahead. In the first half of the year, they had slowly settled into the school, making new friends and building closer ties within each class, progressing as one. At this camp, we aimed to progress further and achieve success through working together towards a common goal.

Secondary One Orientation and Installation Ceremony

T

he Orientation Day is an important feature of secondary school life. During the process, Secondary One students will be familiar with the new school environment, experience the importance of respecting self and others through team bonding activities, and acquire vital skills for future collaboration. Under the guidance of our teachers, our Secondary 4 student leaders facilitated the Orientation Day.

The Secondary One Installation Ceremony is a highlight for the Secondary One students. The fresh-faced students each receive a JYian Pearl marking their formal inclusion to the JYian Family. This symbolic move indicates that each student is ready for the inculcation of the school values of R3IGHT: Respect, Responsibility, Resilience, Integrity, Graciousness, Harmony and Teamwork. The Juying Scholarship Presentation Ceremony was also held on the Orientation Day. The scholarship was for the top students of the 2014 Secondary 1 Express, Normal (Academic) and Normal (Technical) cohorts who have chosen Juying Secondary School as their First Choice School.

Activities and programmes planned sought to accomplish the above objectives. The Applied Learning Story Telling workshop enabled campers to develop confidence in an encouraging and congenial setting. The learning journey to the Singapore Art Museum opened the campers’ minds and enhanced their appreciation for the arts while the experience on board the majestic RSS Persistence ship provided food for thought. What role does each one of us play in Singapore? Is that role similar to the role we play in the school? How responsible are we in defending and upholding the name of Juying Secondary School? The campers observed the Navy personnel and reflected on how they themselves could contribute to the school, the community and the country. It was indeed a rich and authentic experience. The highlight of the camp was the dragon boat activity during which the campers had to work hand-in-hand with their classmates and teachers. They realised that only with the right coordination, the belief in one another and respecting their shortcomings would they achieve success together. At the end of the camp, most of the campers had developed a newly-forged bond and learned to work together. While there is still a long journey ahead, the campers would certainly have understood our school motto better, that together we will succeed. Written by Mr Cai Zhiwen (Camp Commandant)

Secondary Two R IGHT Camp: Adventure RESPONSIBILITY IN DECISION-MAKING AND BUILDING OF POSITIVE RELATIONSHIPS

T

his year, the Secondary 2 Adventure Camp was held at the MOE Dairy Farm Adventure Centre. It was led by the Juying Outdoor Education team and instructors from InnoTrek, and supported by a group of dedicated teachers, who saw the campers through all activities and reflections. The camp began on a good note with students taking responsibility in lunch duties and clearing up after themselves. During Geo-caching, group members took turns in navigating the routes using a GPS device and a map. Although several wrong turns were made, the groups showed resilience and trudged on, and eventually managed to reach their destinations. The highlights of the camp were the high elements, which included the zipline, abseiling, rock-climbing and the challenge pole. Campers were put to the test as they tried to overcome their fears, find their sense of balance amongst the ropes, and scale heights of more than ten metres high. Group members provided cheers of encouragement and enthusiastic applause whenever a camper overcame a challenge. It was also heartening that every group displayed excellent teamwork while they took part in teambonding activities. Our Principal, Mr Seet Tiat Hee, was the Guest-of-Honour for the campfire night. Parents and family members were also invited to enjoy the performances put up by our talented JYians. As the camp progressed, campers learnt the importance of safety, became more responsible when making decisions, and built positive relationships with one another. In addition, group leaders began taking initiative in the leading of cheers and in reminding campers to be disciplined and responsible at all times. The Secondary 2 Adventure Camp had been exciting and memorable. The valuable lessons learnt and the friendships forged would definitely remain in the hearts of all campers in the years to come. T

his year’s LEAD Camp is exceptional as three committees came together to plan and organise the LEAD Camp 2014. The teams involved were the Outdoor Education (OE), the Student Leadership Development (SLD) and the Values-In-Action (VIA) committees.

The LEAD Camp is a 4-day-3-night leadership camp held at Tanjung Belungkur, near Desaru, Malaysia. A total of 25 selected student leaders and 5 OE teachers participated in this camp. Over the four days, the student leaders went through different outdoor activities such as trekking, kayaking and orienteering. Student leaders also had the chance to interact with the local community as well as understand how vital the mangroves were for the livelihood of the fishermen. It was a very meaningful camp in that it gave student leaders opportunities to hone their leadership skills as well as to purposefully demonstrate the R3IGHT values. During the daily reflections with the teachers, these values and the 7 habits of effective teens were revisited, and students were inspired to reflect on the values and habits that they can improve on. Prefects’ Investiture In the process of creating Pearls of Wisdom through our lessons, our CCAs and our interaction with our teachers and peers, we become a pearl ourselves, in the Oyster of Juying Secondary School. Written by Daro Tan Wei Liang (3E1) Head Prefect, 2014

10

th March 2014 was an especially significant date for our prefects as it was their 19th Prefects’ Investiture ceremony. On that day, the Secondary 2 and Secondary 3 prefects of Juying Secondary School took to the stage with much confidence and pride, spurred on by resounding cheers from their fellow JYians. The veteran prefects from Secondary 4 watched on with pride even as they handed over the reins of the school to their juniors to assume a new chapter in their learning journey. The ceremony, organised by the senior prefects, was held with dignity with our Principal, Mr Seet Tiat Hee, leading our prefects on stage. In attendance were the Vice-Principals Mr Ow Kwok Leong, Ms Jennifer Wong and our caring teachers, beaming with pride and joy. The highlight of the event was the Principal’s speech, in which he reminded the prefects of the qualities of a good leader and the importance of upholding the school rules. The out-going Head Prefect Nurul Umairah Binte Suhaimi of 4E1 and the new Head Prefect Daro Tan Wei Liang of 3E1 also gave very inspirational speeches which were well received. The Head Prefect is flanked by Vice-Head Prefects Leung Qian Wen and Rathi D/O Ravi Chandran, both from 3E1, and supporting the triumvirate are a highly versatile team of Prefect Executive Committee (Ex-Co) members. We congratulate these praiseworthy student leaders and have high hopes of them displaying good leadership qualities and our school’s R3ight values.

Congratulations, Prefects! Written by Mr Surya

Pastoral Care and Career Guidance (Pccg) Department School-based Citizenship and Character Education – 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens

Education and Career Guidance (ECG) The ECG team organise activities such as the ECG Lessons, Career Talks, Workshops and Assembly Talks to enable JYians to develop attitudes, skills and self-knowledge that will empower them to make informed decisions with regards to their prospective careers.

The school rides on Sean Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens as a school-based CCE programme to motivate students to take responsibility for their personal well being and effectiveness. The 7 Habits reinforce the learning of CCE domains of self, family, school and community. The habits when ingrained will enable the students to internalise and apply the school values into their daily lives. The holistic aim here is to empower students to gain control over their life, get focused and organised, enhanced their relationships, improve their communication and achieve work/ life balance. Our form teachers are pivotal in inculcating this school-based CCE lessons during the alternate weeks of form-teacher time.

The 2014 Academic and Career Exhibition was organised in-house for the graduating students. Through this interactive platform, JYians were able to gain knowledge of the numerous courses offered by the higher learning institutions as well as the prospects of furthering their studies beyond diplomas and ‘A’ Level.

Chillax – Our Student Centre The objectives of setting up the student centre are: (i) to reward our students for displaying the school values (R3IGHT); (ii) to provide a more relaxed platform for our students to interact, plan activities and engage with each other; to offer an alternative place for ‘latchkey’ students to stay in school after curriculum time and to serve as an after-school recreation centre for students to spend their time with adult supervision. Chillax is a student care centre where students can spend their afternoon by relaxing, playing games such as X-Box Kinect, Wii, air hockey, various board games, watching movies and many more. Students use the Chillax card to collect reward stickers from teachers and other staff members of the school. To earn the reward stickers, students are expected to display the school’s values – R3IGHT (Respect, Responsibility, Resilience, Integrity, Graciousness, Humility, Teamwork).

Support for Students who need Financial Assistance The goal of the FAS Committee is to identify students with special financial circumstances that may confine their holistic development and growth in JYSS. Throughout the year, the FAS Committee works together with the staff to identify and nominate students to receive suitable scholarships and bursaries generously given by various organisations. 53

Presentation of Books

Positive School Climate (PSC)

This year, a total of 214 students received a set of English reading books to aid in their learning of the English Language. Together with teachers from the English Language department, suitable reading books were selected for students according to their language abilities and interests. In addition, all students received the motivational book, ‘The Joys and Pains of Growing Up… 17 Principles Every Youth Must Know!’ by Mr Peter Lau, a successful ex-JYian who was the world’s youngest Neuro-Semantics® Trainer in 2007 and motivational speaker. At the books presentation, each book that the students received was affixed with a special note by our Principal, Mr Seet, to encourage students to share the books they had received.

The main objective of the PSC award is to reward our students for putting the school values (R3IGHT) and the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens into practice. The PSC awards not only reward classes who exemplify the school’s R3IGHT values, it encourages teamwork amongst the students and creates a conducive learning environment.

CDAC and Mendaki Tuition Programme In alignment with the school’s focus on academic excellence, the school sought the help of teacher-volunteers from the CDAC and Mendaki tuition programme for our JYians in their learning of English, Mathematics and Science. A total of 95 students across levels and ethnic groups benefitted from these weekly tuition sessions.

The R3ight values and 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens were infused into some of the awards such as: Most Proactive Class Award, The Most Synergized Class Award, The R3IGHT Award, The Most Improved R3IGHT Award and The Most Notice-Able Class Award. In addition to the above-mentioned awards, The Best Chairperson & Vice-Chairperson Award was given out this year in recognition of students who rendered their loyal service to the class. Lastly in addition to the customised prizes, the winning class for the R3IGHT Award will gain access to Chillax, our very exciting student centre. Thought of the Week (TOTW) on 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens Apart from the rebranding of the various PSC awards, 2014 is the year where we kick- started our 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens. The school leaders shared stories, riddles and words of wisdom during the morning assemblies based on the different topics of the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens. Meaningful taglines were then given out to classes so that these could be pasted on their classroom noticeboard. The Most Noticeable Class Competition was based on the creative depiction of the chosen 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens theme and the aesthetic appeal of the class noticeboard. Friends of Singa Kindness Movement 2014 Lastly, in order to complement the efforts of creating a positive school climate in Juying, the PSC team embarked on the Friends of Singa 2014 Project organised by the Singapore Kindness Movement. Friends of Singapore Ambassadors from 2E1 and 2E2 led their classmates to adopt the school canteen. With the theme, “A Canteen of Kindness Starts With One Thoughtful Me”, JYians were encouraged to practise kindness in the canteen by sparing a thought for the school canteen vendors and school cleaners. A simple gesture of encouraging schoolmates to return the cutleries after meals and to say “Please” and “Thank you” were done. Besides giving talks during assembly to educate their schoolmates, these ambassadors also took over the cleaning activity from the vendors and cleaners for 3 days. Their kind gesture was greatly appreciated. With the hard work, these Friends of Singa Ambassadors were rewarded with a Merit award.

Values in Action Local Programme Secondary 3 VIA Programme 30 Secondary 3 students spent an eventful Dumpling Festival with the elderly residents from West Coast GRC at Clementi Community Club on 29 May 2014. JYians communicated with the elderly in their dialects and gave each resident a memento which was made during their balloon sculpturing session. While the elderly residents were served a sumptuous dinner, JYians performed a medley of songs for the guests. Performances lightened up the atmosphere and the residents luxuriated in the entertainment for the evening. After dinner, each resident received a set of electrical appliances. Our students offered to carry the appliances home for the residents and the evening ended on a meaningful note. This event was significant as our JYians learned to communicate with the elderly residents and made an impact on the lives of others through their efforts. Secondary 4 and 5 VIA Programme The Secondary 4 and 5 students participated in Tzu Chi’s recycling event as part of their VIA project on 12 January 2014. Students gathered in school at 9am and collected recycled materials such as newspaper, plastic bottles and boxes from Nanyang residents.

of Kindness Starts With One Thoughtful Me”. This project aims to educate students to be kind by sparing a thought for the canteen cleaners, vendors and users of the canteen. Activities such as having a poster design competition and giving the canteen vendors and cleaners a 3-day reprieve from their cleaning duties were taken to promote kindness and awareness. Our considerate participants deservingly obtained a Certificate of Merit award. Secondary 2A3’s project named Melody of Hope is an original song and dance expounding the values of kindness while Secondary 2A2 wrote a story book with illustrations to promote kindness to pre-schoolers. The students hope that the kindness generated by their projects can help translate Singapore into a more caring and gracious society. Written by Mr Wang Woon Keat (VIA Coordinator)

The proceeds are channelled to the Seed of Hope programme fund which is used to help the needy students in the school. Secondary 2 VIA Programme Secondary 2E1 and 2E2 participated in the Friends Of Singa 2014 Award with a compassionate project entitled “A Canteen 55

Chinese New Year Celebration

T

he Chinese New Year celebration was a delightful experience with a colourful mixture of amazing performances by the students and staff of JYSS.

The JYSS Symphonic Band started off the concert with their spectacular opening numbers, while the Hip Hop Dance group rocked the house with their stunning and lively dance performance.

Staff and students were greatly amused by the uproarious performance by our Sec Three students in a performance entitled ‘Three Sentences and A Half’(三句半表演). The Cultural Dance group also swept us away with their elegant and graceful dance movements. Finally, for the closing performance, the school Choir enchanted us with their harmonious voices. A video presentation featuring staff and students’ well wishes for Chinese New Year was also shown. The highlight of the concert was the appearance of two Gods of Fortune (played by VP Mr Ow & Mr Kartik Raj), who showered the students with sweet blessings. The school was also fortunate to have our SAC member Mr Sam Ng, who sponsored the Lion Dance for this year CNY celebration. The concert ended with the melodious singing by our teachers – Mdm Diyana, Ms Yang Wenqing, Mr Romit Datta and Mr Dayan Tan. Written by Mdm Maslinni Abdul Malik (HOD MT)

Racial Harmony Day OBJECTIVES Students learnt the importance of making choices that promote and advocate inter-cultural understanding. This enables students to build stronger relationships between people of all races, cultures and nationalities which will further strengthen our distinctive identity as Singaporeans.

R

acial Harmony Day was commemorated on the 21st of July 2014. The theme for this year’s Racial Harmony Day (RHD) was “Harmony From the Heart".

In line with the theme “Harmony from the heart” Racial Harmony Day lesson packages were prepared and carried out during their CCE period prior to the commemoration day. In the lesson packages, lower secondary students were taught the proper manners that need to be observed when visiting neighbours of different races. As for the upper secondary students, they needed to reflect on the correct etiquette and decorum when dealing with racist and religious remarks or comments on the social media such as Facebook, Instagram, et cetera.

A group of National Education (NE) ambassadors anchored the assembly programme. The audience were shown 2 video clips which portrayed Singapore’s past and its future. Students were taught on the need for them to reflect and at the same time to treasure the harmony that we have now as a nation despite our multi-cultural backgrounds. The NE ambassadors then participated in a short quiz. The atmosphere was further heightened when the quiz was opened to the audience. It was obvious that students appreciated the diversity amongst them as they cheered their fellow JYians despite the differences in race, religion or nationality. All in all, JYians really had a great time on that day and were able to learn more about their neighbours as well as interact with each other despite their race, religion and nationality. This was truly a memorable event for all JYians. Written by Mdm Rozana Binte Salleh (NE Committee Member)

T

he school’s National Day theme this year is ‘Juying Our Family, Singapore our Home’. The National Day celebration was held in conjunction with the Sports Carnival this year. Overseas exchange students and teachers from Hong Kong’s Kwok Tak Seng Catholic Secondary School also joined in our celebrations.

Before the Sports Carnival kicked off, the school was a hive of activity and everyone was excited to take part in the various game categories such as Netball, Basketball and Soccer. The Uniformed Groups marched in for the National Day Ceremonial segment and the whole school sang the national anthem together as one. Student representatives from Secondary 1A2, Green Club, Choir and Soccer read the recollections with the whole school. We reflected on the hardship and resilience of our ancestors in building a strong nation. Next, the school Choir serenaded us with songs from four main languages – Mandarin, English, Malay and Tamil. The Cultural Dance and Hip Hop groups lifted the atmosphere with their vibrant dance performances. The Colours Awards ceremony also took place with awards being given out for student recognition in Achievement, Leadership and Service to the school. The climax of the celebrations was during the grand finale when our school leaders, overseas guests from Hong Kong, performers and prize winners went on stage to sing together two popular songs - ‘Home’ and ‘One People, One Nation, One Singapore’. With a strong sense of patriotism, our spirits were high as the celebrations ended on a meaningful note. Written by Ms Low E Soon (NE Committee Member)

Fitness Run @ Japanese & Chinese Gardens

O

n the 11th of April, our inaugural Fitness Run was held at the scenic Japanese and Chinese Gardens. We were blessed with perfect weather in the morning and everyone was gearing up for a great day ahead. Together with their teachers and parents, students were looking to clock their best timings for the 2.4km route. Isotonic beverages were also kindly sponsored by 100-Plus to help us cool down at the end of the run. Our PCCG Head, Mrs Amy Yeo, kicked off the event with a motivational opening address. Psyched up by her speech, the students warmed up and got ready. Our Principal, Mr Seet Tiat Hee then flagged off the various race categories. Like in previous years, our students, teachers and parents displayed their resilience and competitive spirit during the run. It was encouraging to see smiles on all the runners’ faces during the event. There were students who clocked impressive timings worthy of mention. Muhammad Thaqif of 3T1 clocked the fastest time of 9 minutes 13 seconds for the boys and Gum Jia Qian and Casey of 1E2 clocked the fastest time of 11 minutes 56 seconds for the girls. Competition between the houses was intense this year. After tallying the scores, Andes House emerged as the Champion house for the inaugural Fitness Run 2014! and is a combination of hard work, fun, and dedication. It’s like a huge family that lasts for only four years. Throughout my 4 years in Juying Symphonic Band, I can truly say that I have never regretted being a part of the band. It has shaped me into a leader of courage and a person of character. The band members learn how to play good music together as one, and at the same time possessing a high level of discipline and responsibility. The time spent with the band has been extremely memorable. “Behind a brilliant performance on stage is years of practice off-stage.” We struggled during the preparation for the SYF but we also had fun and experienced a sense of unity and accomplishment on the stage. I am proud of being a part of the band not because of our achievements, but because of what we have achieved together as one. This feeling cannot be felt anywhere else but in the band.

T

he Cultural Dance has been actively involved in school performances with a variety of dances styles such as Chinese contemporary dance to celebrate Chinese New Year, Thai dance for Speech Day, Malay contemporary dance for Hari Raya concert and Indian dance for Teacher’s Day concert. The students develop their understanding of the basic dance skills through the varieties of dance styles that they are exposed to. This helps them to structure and strengthen their knowledge of dances.

Through the 4/5 years, students not only learn about the theories and practical skills of dance routines, but are also inculcated the values of self-discipline, time management and other values that are in line with the R3IGHT values of the school. Through team bonding camp, students learn more about each other, respecting other races and religion. It also provided the opportunity for students to display their graciousness by looking out for others and embrace teamwork by sharing what they know about dance. As a whole, the cultural dance group is a platform that supports and further develops the character building of the students of Juying Secondary School.

Moreover, the incredible friendships I’ve gained from my JYSB experience have given me confidence, which I’ve learned to transfer to my other aspects of my academic, extracurricular and social life. The band is not just a CCA, it's my second home – another giant family to me. I believe the skills and lessons I have learned, and the friendships I have developed will guide me along and last for the rest of my life. Written by Zhao Kanghui (4E1, 2014)

Choir J

uying Secondary School Choir is a young and vibrant choir. Founded in 2001, we have come a long way and after numerous transformations, we have evolved into a versatile choir that is well versed in traditional folk and classical choral music, as well as pop tunes. Under the guidance of our vocal and dance instructors, Miss Deniece and Miss Safy, and the encouragement of our very lovable and caring teachers-in-charge, Mr Dayan Tan Ying Peng, Miss Lau Jia Yun and Mrs Lynda Kwan, Juying Secondary School Choir did the school proud by clinching the acclaimed Distinction Award in the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) choral vocal category last year. The choir also achieved the Platinum Award in the B-Dazzled Interschool Show Choir Challenge 2014. Not only did the choir out-perform many other distinction choirs, it was ranked 5th in the festival. Kang Zi Ying of 3A2 who represented the choir in the B-Dazzled Under 21 Solo category also did well by winning the Platinum Award. In Juying Secondary School Choir, our students undergo an all-rounded arts education. Not only do students get to attend musicals, acapella concerts and choral festivals, they also receive master classes from industry practitioners and participate in exchange programs with choirs from other schools. This enhances the students’ musicality and deepens their sense of appreciation for the arts. Written by Mr Dayan Tan Ying Peng

he study of visual art provides students with the opportunity to give meaning to experiences by expressing their views and feelings in visual and tactile forms. The direct experience of the practical and theoretical aspects provides students with a deeper understanding of the role of art in the development of mankind.

Art encourages and fosters creative, critical and analytical thinking. It also creates sensitivity and powers of observation. Enjoyment and aesthetic pleasure are experienced and self-confidence is engendered. Our teachers have been to various schools like Shuqun Secondary, Si Ling Secondary & Haig Girls School to learn good practices from these niche art schools. Teachers also attended various art workshops and courses to keep up with the latest trend and development in art. Teachers also made prototypes of the artwork that they will use for teaching and shared it among the art teachers.. Art talk by the Singapore Art Gallery was organised to expose all students to our local artists’ masterpieces. For school professional sharing, teachers have contributed and shared art resources in the Art Resource Bank. During curriculum, art teachers have to ensure that the students recognise the growing importance of thinking skills and information technology, thus encouraging the uses of these to deliver a balanced curriculum. T

he National Civil Defence Cadet Corps in Juying Secondary School aims to develop the strengths, character and knowledge of cadets through a rigorous 4/5 year programme which provides opportunities and various platforms for each cadet. In these 4/5 years, cadets will not only interact with cadets among Juying Secondary School but will also get to learn from cadets all over Singapore as they participate in various activities and camps organized by NCDCC headquarters.

In the first year, cadets will learn and appreciate the need for Civil Defence in Singapore which aims to cultivate the value of Respect, Responsibility and Resilience in them. Second year cadets will undergo camps which aim to develop the values of Resilience, Graciousness and Teamwork. In the third year, the cadets will lead the unit by applying what they had learnt during the leadership camps with the aim of cultivating the value of Humility, Integrity and Teamwork. Fourth year cadets will serve as mentors to the juniors. They will also be given the opportunity to attend courses and overseas trips where they will get to lead cadets from different schools.

VISION Long Term Goal: To groom our cadets to show greater social responsibilities and to take on an increased ownership of their school, unit and committee

T

he year 2014 has been an eventful one for our dynamic NCC (Sea) coeducational Unit. The Junior Cadets recruitment drive marked a bright beginning as we were able to enlist 27 recruits to join our NCC (Sea) family, boosting our cohort numbers. This is an encouraging sign that we are growing as a contingent.

In 2013, the NCC unit won the Bronze Award in the Annual Best Unit Competition (BUC). NCC aspires to instil in every cadet confidence and determination. This is achieved through diverse activities whereby the mental discipline, physical fitness and endurance of each cadet are put to test. This year, our cadets have the opportunity to be part of the Welcome Party to welcome the Prime Minister, Mr. Lee Hsien Loong, during his walkabouts. During the event, they learnt to manipulate and control giant puppets used during the Chingay Parade. Through this event, they learnt the importance of teamwork and the values of resilience, responsibility and trust. It was an enriching experience for our cadets where they have the chance to be working together with the community. NCC HQ also introduced the sailing course to the Junior Cadets this year. Sailing is a new sport to many cadets. It is a sport that requires more than just fitness level. Through sailing, cadets learnt the importance of coordination and team work. They also exhibited the value of resilience by not giving up until they master the technique of controlling the craft and sailing in the water. The NCC curriculum observes a transformation in cadets’ lives as they participate enthusiastically in all the activities. Through the vigorous but fun training and activities, our cadets have grown in confidence and knowledge, showing commitment and industry in the various tasks and obstacles they face. They now have greater ability to face challenges and take up leadership roles in their future endeavors. Written by Ms Khoo Woei Lin (Commanding Officer) 68

IT/Media Club

I

T/Media Club provides a platform for students to pick up knowledge and skills in the domains of audiovisual, robotics and clean energy.

In the audiovisual domain, students undergo rigorous on-the-job training while participating whole-heartedly in the club's activities and events. Our training includes equipment orienteering, handling and troubleshooting, technical handling tests, teambuilding (lower secondary) and manpower management (upper secondary).

In the robotics domain, students are trained to program and debug a picomouse through theory and practical lessons. Each year, teams are sent to participate in the Singapore Robotic Games and Engineering Explorer Challenge. In 2014, our teams emerged 2nd and 1st respectively. In the clean energy domain, students are trained to design and build solar powered vehicles which they use to compete in various national competitions. In 2014, our teams emerged 2nd in the National Junior Solar Sprint Competition (Best Design Category) and 1st in the Engineering and Science Challenge (Aesthetics and Workmanship Category). Through means of providing support for the school and participation in competitions, students are able to put into practice the school values of Respect, Responsibility, Resilience, Integrity, Graciousness, Humility and Teamwork. Written by Mr Eugene Lim (IC)

Club & societies VISION

The CCA Programme aims to develop JYians to be Healthy Bodied and Moral Minded. It provides character development through leadership training, fostering camaraderie and social integration with the application of social and co-operative skills. Led by committed staff, the IT/MEDIA CLUB helps generate a willingness from the pupils to excel in their relevant specializations, by delivering a moral judgment of right from wrong through the 4E-IRC approach.

Strategic Games Club

MISSION

The IT/MEDIA CLUB provides supportive and positive learning experiences in which pupils are empowered to further develop their understanding of: Audio/Visual technology, Digital Photography and simple Robotics and to provide support to the school in these areas of speciality. Pupils will learn how to operate digital single-lens reflex cameras, audio/visual systems, public address systems, editing software, and work together in a group.

W

e believe that the mind should not just be limited to the academics and studies. To truly expand the mind, one should always explore ways to stretch the mind. In the Strategic Games Club, we teach our students skills that are beyond the textbooks. Our members can stretch their minds via games such as International Chess, Chinese Chess, Weiqi, Scrabble and Monopoly. Students learn to anticipate the opponent’s moves (prediction), and develop leadership skills and teamwork. The CCA members also participated in competitions pertaining to the games as well.

VISION

Every JYian is a critical and creative thinker

MISSION

The Strategic Games Club exists to advance the minds of its members through critical and creative thinking via making connections between games and life.

VISION

W

ith a strong emphasis on holistic development, our students are given opportunities to reach their maximum potential. Training sessions ensure that students are competent in basic strokes and techniques as well as basic footwork and court movement. Students develop endurance through strength training and speedwork. Sports psychology is also infused so that there is total preparation for tournaments. Participation in the West Zone Inter-school Tournament and Wee Kim Wee Challenge Trophy are two platforms, amongst others, for students to display and assess their acquisition of skills and techniques. Students are also involved in decision making process and practise competition strategy through the selection of players and match lineup.

In addition to developing aptitude in the CCA, students are provided formal and informal leadership positions at both the Lower and Upper Secondary levels so that every JYian has the opportunity to grow as a leader. While the Captain and Vice-captain oversee the team, the Lower Sec team leaders are crucial members of the CCA to help foster team spirit and sportsmanship. We also possess a strong culture of student-initiated friendly matches. Students take the lead in organising and facilitating matches between staff and students so that there is greater awareness of the sport at Juying. Written by Ms Shinderjeet Kaur

MISSION

To train and develop the fullest potential of students in the CCA so that they are physically fit, proficient in the skills, tactics and strategies of Badminton.

I

really love playing basketball so when I entered Juying Secondary School, I joined the Basketball Club. I love competitions and the adrenaline they give me. In the training prior to the competitions, I would put in my best efforts and follow the coach’s instructions diligently. During the matches, I always did my best. All my team members likewise. We hope we can do our school proud one day. There was an incident that I can remember vividly. It was when I was in secondary 2. We were up against a very strong team. I was very nervous because we really hoped to make it into the second round. In the end, we failed because I was too stressed up to play my best. I felt very guilty but with the encouragement of my coach, team mates and teachers, I stood up on my feet again and decided to train even harder than before.

TEACHERS-IN-CHARGE Mrs Katherine Leong, Ms Low E Soon, Mr Soh Wei Qiang

VISION

Players to be Healthy Bodied and Moral Minded sportsmen

MISSION

To foster self confidence, self-esteem and healthy lifestyle through our training and programmes in a safe and positive environment.

During my third year in the Basketball Club, I was very lucky to be able to participate in several basketball exchange programmes and even had a couple of opportunities to play with professional basketball players. It was not easy playing against such strong opponents but I persevered and humbly picked up many valuable pointers from them. I finally became good enough to become a point guard. I was also very happy that we were able to put up a good fight during the National West ZoneTournament this year. I am now the captain of my school's Basketball Club. I will have to lead my team in the Zonal Tournament next year. It is going to be very stressful but I will do my best and lead the team well. I would like to thank Juying Secondary School and the Basketball Club for the leadership opportunity they have given me. It has not been an easy journey but I have matured and gained a lot because of it. Written by Deon Tan (Captain of Basketball Club 20142015) 77

he school’s football team is gaining strength by the year, with both our teams doing well and putting up strong performances against tough opponents during this year’s West Zone Singapore Schools Sports Council Football Championships 2014. Our C Boys especially put in credible effort, losing out to powerhouse Jurongville Secondary by a 3-2 scoreline in our last group game to finish in 3rd position. Our CCA has been participating actively in several tournaments this year, with both our B and C boys making it to the top 8 of their individual age-group categories in the T-Net 4 a-side Street Soccer Tournament 2014 held at Ulu Pandan Community Club as well as the National Schools Futsal Tournament 2014 held at Golazo Futsal Singapore. The feather in our cap this year would be our C Boys clinching the 1st runners-up position in the West Zone Under-14 7 a-side Football Carnival 2014 organized by Hong Kah Secondary School. We lost to eventual champions, Clementi Town Secondary School by just 1 goal. Well done Team Juying! We look forward to a more exciting footballing year in 2015! Let us do the school proud boys!

VISION

To develop a healthy and active team of sportsmen who strive for excellence on and off the field.

T

he Juying Netball team strives to be reflective players who are committed towards training and gracious towards others. From the National Inter-School Netball Competition and the M1 Challenge to friendly matches with different schools, our girls displayed strong resilience and excellent teamwork when faced with tough opponents, surpassing their limits and beating their own records as they progressed. While maintaining competitiveness, they remained caring and humble players who showed good sportsmanship on the courts. To improve and maintain fitness, our team completed monthly long-distance jogs and frequent gym sessions. Team-building games were often organised to strengthen the bonds among the girls in the different levels. Most importantly, the seniors were given responsibilities to be good role models to guide the juniors in netball skills and school values.

VISION

Active and gracious netballers with excellent sportsmanship

MISSION

To develop a driven and committed team competent in netball skills and leadership qualities, in a caring and supportive environment.

This year, four members successfully completed the Level 1 Umpiring Course, and will be passing on umpiring skills to other team members. In addition, our Secondary 3 girls had the honour of representing the school in the National Day Observance Ceremony organized by Nanyang Constituency, running past the neighbourhood with the flags of Singapore held high. It has indeed been an eventful year of valuable learning experiences, and we look forward to greater accomplishments next year. Written by Miss Yang Wenqing (Teacher-in-charge)

he SWC looks into the wellbeing of the staff of JYSS. In 2014, the popular Angel and Mortal game was extended to the non-teaching staff as well, enabling the staff to get to know one another and shower one another with little gifts and encouragement. In February, a Chinese New Year 'Lo Hei' was organised for all staff to celebrate the occasion together. In June, all the teaching and non-teaching staff took part in a Values In Action activity to distribute goodie bags and electrical appliances to the needy. In July, the staff had a great time feasting on traditional goodies kindly contributed by our Muslim colleagues for a fantastic Hari Raya ‘makan’ session. In September, educators had a great time at the Grand Copthorne Hotel celebrating our Teachers and EAS Day. The theme, “Rainbows”, depicting our colourful teaching life, was chosen in consultation with all staff. In November, the SWC organised a two-day, one-night staff retreat to Pulai Springs Resort in Johore for staff to engage in team-building games and to ‘sharpen their saw’ to rejuvenate after working so hard through the year. Our talented teachers also conducted enrichment lessons for all staff as part of the post-exam activities. Ms Christina Ng, Ms Ma and Mdm Hui conducted lessons on playing the Zither, Yoga and cooking respectively. The SWC also organised a series of Sales@Lounge for the staff to indulge in some retail therapy.

We seek to renew and strengthen the four key wellness of our staff – body, brain, heart and soul. We are committed to helping the school to look after their physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being to maintain high staff morale. We plan and organize recreational events and activities that will contribute to meeting these needs.

Once A JYian Always A JYian Alumni Activities

National Day Honours, 2014

Juying Secondary School values every student – both past and present. In our midst, we have more than 125 JYians who have updated their contact particulars with us at our JYian portal and have kept the valuable relationship strong. The objectives of setting up the JYian Alumni is to present opportunities for JYian family members to bond and network. It also serves as a good platform for our Alumni members to contribute their effort and show concern for JYians who need all the guidance and care they can get. To encourage more partnership, we have created a new Facebook account and the first bonding session will be held during the school’s Teachers’ Day celebration. We hope you will join us in such bonding sessions. Always Remember: Once a JYian Always a JYian! Written by Ms Christina Ng
