JSBE at a glance Jyväskylä University School of Business and Economics is one of the seven faculties at the University of Jyväskylä. Education in business and economics has been offered in Jyväskylä since 1967. As a part of an internationally renowned multidisciplinary university noted for its high-quality research and innovativeness in advancing learning and teaching, we strive for excellence in research and in education based on our research in key fields of business and economics. Our disciplines include Economics, Management and Leadership, Accounting, Marketing, Strategy and Entrepreneurship, and Corporate Environmental Management. We effectively combine theory and practice to promote responsible business and policy-relevant economics in cooperation with our partner organisations. We educate academic experts, leaders and entrepreneurs to serve society at all levels of academic education (bachelor, master and doctoral) as well as offer executive education. In addition, we provide education in business studies and entrepreneurship to students of other faculties at the University. Our Avance Executive Education is one of the leading MBA educators in Finland, and has been awarded the international AMBA accreditation. The number of personnel at JSBE is 98, out of which 21 are professors. The number of students is approximately 1 500.
Main achievements in 2015 • JSBE joined the national student application system for university business schools, which increased the number of applicants significantly. • JSBE a participates in three out of the six research projects that received strategic funding through Academy of Finland’s Equality in Society programme.

HIGHLIGHTS OF TEACHING, RESEARCH AND SOCIETAL IMPACT FROM 2015 20th anniversary of Corporate Environmental Management Year 2015 was the 20th anniversary of corporate environmental management teaching at the University of Jyväskylä. The anniversary was celebrated by organising a jubilee seminar called “From end-of-pipe to eco-innovations – Celebrating 20 years of Corporate Environmental Management teaching” in October 2015. Member of the European Parliament, Ms Sirpa Pietikäinen, held the keynote speech of the seminar. In addition, four alumni of corporate environmental management reminisced their times as students and shared their career stories. Over the years, more than 200 Masters of Science and 13 Doctors of Science have graduated from the programme. During the anniversary year, a record in the number of Master’s degrees awarded per year was reached: 31 students of corporate environmental management graduated in 2015.
The first year of Economics of Education The national responsibility to organise the teaching and research in the field of Economics of Education, granted to JSBE by the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture, came into effect in 2015. Dr. Roope Uusitalo joined JSBE in the new position of Professor in Economics of Education in January 2015. Economics of Education is rapidly growing and becoming a significant multidisciplinary research field, jointly managed by JSBE and FIER (Finnish Institute for Education Research). The research group led by Professor Uusitalo also received highly competitive strategic research funding from the Academy of Finland.
Jukka Pekkarinen appointed as Professor of Practice Dr. Jukka Pekkarinen started as the first Professor of Practice at the University of Jyväskylä in April 2015. The part-time professorship is funded by the OP Group Central Finland and situated at JSBE. The position aims to strengthen the public relations of the university and JSBE, to build networks with business life and to develop education and research. Jukka Pekkarinen received his Dr.Pol.Sc. (Economics) in 1979 from the University of Helsinki and has a long career in the field of Public Economics in Finland.

JSBE was successful in attracting applicants through the national application system JSBE participated in the joint national student application system for university business schools for the first time in 2015. Even though the number of applicants is not directly comparable to previous years when JSBE organised its own application process, the change was successful. The number of applicants in business studies grew 100% and in Economics 30%. The average scores of the business students selected to JSBE were the fourth highest in Finland.
Awards to JSBE teachers Professor Heikki Karjaluoto was chosen as the Teacher of the Year by the association of business students, Pörssi. The National YES-network in the field of entrepreneurship education chose JSBE’s University Teacher Päivi Patja as the YES-teacher 2015 in Central Finland.
Awards to JSBE students DSc (Econ) Heikki Lehkonen won the OP Group Research Foundation’s award for best dissertation with his thesis “Essays on Emerging Financial Markets, Political Institutions and Development Differences” (published in 2014). DSc (Econ) Heini Taiminen received the Agora Center’s dissertation prize for her dissertation ”Digitization of the communication and its implications for marketing“. The Finnish Family Business Network awarded the Matti Koiranen dissertation prize to DSc (econ) María Piedad López-Vergara. Her dissertation is called “Understanding family shareholders in family firms: An exploration of the role of family dynamics in the development of family shareholders’ behaviours” (published in 2014). MSc (Econ) Tiina Koivisto’s Master’s thesis was chosen as the best thesis related to working life ethics by the Finnish chapter of the European Business Ethics Network (EBEN). At the same competition, a commendation was given to MSc Emilia Kahola’s thesis, also from JSBE. JSBE student Heidi Nieminen was chosen as the Financial Prospect in the Student of the Year competition organised by the consulting company Universum Global, The Finnish Tax Administration, OP Group, Sonera and Unilever.

Honour and visibility to JSBE research The article ”Institutional Logic of Business Bubbles: Lessons from the Dubai Business School Mania” by Kimmo Alajoutsijärvi, Katariina Juusola and Juha-Antti Lamberg (all from JSBE) was chosen as the best article published in 2014 by the Academy of Management Learning and Education journal. At the Academy of Management (AOM) conference in August 2015, JSBE researchers were acknowledged in following ways: Professor Juha-Antti Lamberg (JSBE) was one of the writers of ”Behavioral Cycles Leading to the Divestment of Previous Core Businesses”, evaluated as one of the best papers in the field of strategy research University Teacher Virpi Malin (JSBE) received the Best Critical Paper –award in the field of Critical Management Studies (CMS) together with Jonathan Murphy (Cardiff University), for their joint research ”How does dialogue really take place in a democratic transition?”. Senior Researcher Marjo Siltaoja (JSBE) was one of the writers of ”From Shame to Fame: A Model of the Destigmatization Process in Media Discourse”, which was presented at the Organizations and the Natural Environment (ONE) division and accepted to the Best Papers Proceedings of the conference. JSBE’s Dean Hanna-Leena Pesonen, Professor of Corporate Environmental Management, was a nominee for “Eni Award for Protection of the Environment”, a significant international award in the field of energy research.
Success in research funding JSBE is a participant in three out of the six research projects that received strategic funding through Academy of Finland’s Equality in Society programme in September 2015. Professor Anna-Maija Lämsä’s research group participates in the Social and Economic Sustainability of Future Working Life: Policies, Equalities and Intersectionalities in Finland consortium coordinated by the University of Helsinki. Professor Roope Uusitalo’s research group received funding through the Preventing Social Exclusion: What Works and Why? consortium, coordinated by the Institute for Economic Research. University researcher Mika Haapanen’s research group participates the Work, Inquality and Public Policy consortium, coordinated by the University of Tampere. Four new research projects, funded by the Finnish Funding Agency for Innovation (TEKES), started under the Marketing research group. Two of the projects are led by Professor Heikki Karjaluoto and two by Professsor Outi Uusitalo.

Long-standing cooperation with Jyväskylä Merchants Guild Foundation continued JSBE received significant support from the Jyväskylä Merchants Guild Foundation. At the traditional scholarship ceremony in February 2015, the foundation donated 215 000 euros for research and teaching. The keynote speech was held by the former state secretary Raimo Sailas.
The best Finnish Economic Forecaster was awarded at the Summer Seminar The Bank of Finland received the Best Finnish Economic Forecaster Award at the Annual Summer Seminar of Finnish Economists. The seminar has been organised by JSBE since 1984 and once again gathered a considerable number of economists to Jyväskylä in June. It was the 18th time that JSBE gave out the award and the fourth time for the Bank of Finland to win it.
JSBE’s alumni appointed to key positions DSc (Econ) Sanna-Mari Hynninen (Economics) was appointed as the Managing Director for Federation of Finnish Enterprises Central Finland. MSc (Econ) Olli Turunen (Economics) was appointed as the Vice president for Investor Relations at Kemira, a global chemicals company. MSc (Econ) Jarkko Nordlund (Management and Leadership) was appointed as the CEO of MTV Oy, a Finnish media company owned by Bonnier AB.
