THE ART & ARCHITECTURE OF
K AY J O H N Y I M
I aspire to become both an architect and an artist. I never hesitate to jump beyond artistic restraints; I challenge the precedents and visualize my thoughts as I desire. Having studied and practiced visual arts for more than a decade in Hong Kong, I believe in the infinite possibilities of design in broadening our imagination, as means of communication across language barriers. I scrutinize existing architectural paradigms; I aim to strike the perfect balance among aesthetics, practicality and technology. My studies at the University of Bath and TU Delft have equipped my artist brain a solid foundation of architectural and technical knowledge; my Diploma study at the AA School of Architecture gave me a glimpse into the unthinkable potentials of strategic design thinking, where architecture solves world scale problems. All these years of academic and work experience have sculpted my “artist and architect brain into an irresistible magnet of knowledge. I become more eager to learn and to develop my skill-sets as I seek out more opportunities throughout my RIBA Part 2 and ongoing Part 3 experience. This document presents a selection of my recent professional and academic work - they are not statements of the best and the refined, but a preview into the better and the potentials within me.

POWIS CLOUD LILY JENCKS STUDIO
PART-II ARCHITECTURAL ASSISTANT
Powis Cloud is a residential extension to a four-story building. It is designed to take the form and behavior of subtle clouds, both literally and metaphorically - with walls composed primarily of translucent polycarbonate, furniture made from acrylic and partitions made with light-diffusing curtains. It is challenging for us to foresee how light would interact with the combination of materials - physical models, or even Rhino 3D shaded models could only simulate a very limited range of material properties. I first introduced spherical rendering and virtual reality (with Google Cardboard) as a solution to let the architect and the client experience the interior space. The production of photo-realistic spherical renderings involves material sampling, scanning and texture mapping. This has successfully allowed us to produce iterative and final designs. My primary roles range from design development to sourcing material, from visualization to producing tender drawing packages.

TURKEY TAZLER NEW MEDIA PARK LILY JENCKS STUDIO
PART-II ARCHITECTURAL ASSISTANT
The New Media Park is an ongoing project since 2013. The evolution in geology, ecology and humanity is celebrated and dramatized in the design of the New Media Park, in the concrete dam with its kinetic cascade, the planting, lake and stepping stones, the pathways and landforms.
LAKE 1 LAKE 2 LAKE 3
My primary roles include design development, 3D modeling and visualization. Concept and design presentation to client is one of the most challenging stages throughout the project - the architectural and landscape of the New Media Park has embodied so many stories and metaphors that still drawings can hardly interpret. I have therefore experimented with 3D printing and motion graphics animations to complement technical drawings - both of which has successfully conveyed our design to the client. HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL PROPOSAL LILY JENCKS STUDIO
PART-II ARCHITECTURAL ASSISTANT
John McAslan + Partners has been shortlisted alongside nine other international practices to design a £40 million National Holocaust Memorial next to the Houses of Parliament in London. Working in collaboration with John McAslan + Partners, MASS Design Group, Local Projects and Arup, Lily Jencks Studio designed the land-scape above and around the Holocaust Memorial - named “Garden of Conscious”. For the visitor, the experience will be one of discovery and curiosity at what appears to be a very traditional location. Upon entering the formality of the existing park, the visitor is led by a pathway to enter the void where the earth splits - an open tunnel revealing the 6 million pledge-stones. I am primarily responsible for rendering and compositing CAD with existing photos. Project team: John McAslan + Partners Lily Jencks Mieke Tanghe Kay John Yim

The resin table is a collaborative project between Atelier La Juntana and Lily Jencks Studio. It is designed as a sculptural representation of Ruin Studio in Scotland, composed of a solid CNC MDF, topped and filled by 6mm of pour-over resin, mounted onto a pair of closed rectangular steel support. I am responsible for the overall design and 3D modeling of the CNC model. Project team: Atelier La Juntana Patricia Santos Vidal Lily Jencks Kay John Yim

PROJECT IMMORTALIZATION PERSONAL PROJECT
In search for faster solutions to produce accurate 3D models, I come across photogrammetry - by taking arrays of photos in a consistent time and space to reproduce 3D point cloud and eventually 3D meshes. This reduces time required for3D modeling, and adds flexibility to 3D scene compositing. Besides from use photogrammetry for obtaining detail measurements on site, I have experimented with using photogrammetry data for rendering “digi-doubles. Project Immortalization is a photogrammetry project in celebration of 15 years of friendship with my 6 childhood friends. With point clouds generated from photos, I am able to model triangulated meshes of myself and my friends. They are then texture mapped, composited into 3D scenes for animation.

FOOD STATION UNIVERSITY OF BATH PRIVATE OUTDOOR DINING
BSC 4 DESIGN STUDIO
The project is to create a ‘Food Station’ on the eastern side of Bristol Temple Meads Train Station. The title ‘Food Station’ is derived from the nature of the building’s function in relation to food as well as its proximity to Bristol Temple Meads station, named to be a food hub showcasing the stages of food production, distribution, consumption and waste recycling. ‘Food Station’ is designed to be the Bristol landmark, the essential stop/terminus for buying and sharing food, as a place for social interaction as well as a distraction from the urban lifestyle to reconnect people to the source of food - Nature.
MARKET / TEMPORARY EXHIBIT
I am heavily involved in every project stage, from conceptual design to planning, from modeling to rendering. Physical modeling is our primary means of communicating spatial qualities during design development, whereas rendered plans and sections convey the materiality and atmosphere of our final design.
