All glazings are only visible from the inside(excluding the two glass walls surrounding the courtyard), so privacy and daylight penetration are well-balanced. Glazing are organized such that receptionists and doctors have a clear vision of patients no matter if they are in the courtyard or waiting area. The solid wall at the SE closes off the circualtion route of the buliding and connects to the trees at the south boundary to create a secure external courtyard at the centre, the most comfortable place on site. It also blocks the view towards the dense woodland at the SW of the site , which has a depressing atmosphere without daylight penetration and covered in darkness all year long. The solid wall at the NW enlcoses the service areas, as they are not presentable places and no one spend long time working there.

The grassland immediately behind the mathematical science building (site 3) is chosen as a location for building a new doctors surgery. It will replace the existing doctors surgery at SW of the univesrity, thus it has to maintain the exisiting service standards with optimum area and partitions for different purposes, for instance consulting area and waiting area. The building design has to respond to surrouding context and use them to the best advantage for the given biulding type, ultimately provides a pleasant experience for patients, doctors and visitors both practicably and visually.

Trees of approximately 10m high stand right behind the site, so prevailing wind from SW is partially blocked from site. Certain warmth can be maintained during winter due to the pine tree standing right behind the site.

The site is located at the centre area of the university, right behind the Mathematical Science building. It can be accessed from any direction on foot or from south by car. Despite its centered location, the site has good privacy due to its surrounding trees, buildings and dropped level from the parade.

Through surrounding trees and buildings protect the site from excess sunlight and avoid overheating, getting neccessary amount of daylight into the doctors surgery is a main concern while designing.

Wood and concrete claddings are used as a skin to the steel-framed structures. Brownish color matches the context, and appears calm both visually and psychologically together with the flat roof. Wood claddings wrapping around the building functions as a shading cantilever, creating a secure space which integrates with the natrual landscape. Self-cleaning glazings are installed at roof top to introduce natural light into every room in the building.

s1 :e1 c0 t0 @i oA 2n The building is designed to be minimal - flat roofs and parallel glazings are clearly shown through the typical elevation of the further building block. Skylight is introduced through the 1m height difference between the middle block and the two side blocks, as well as through the rooftop.

s1 :e1 c0 t0 @i oA 2n The Courtyard at the centre of the scheme serves both a children’s play area and secure external area of the doctors surgery. It is surrounded by the building itself and trees on site. Though it is fairly prone to the sun, shading of trees and cantilever of the building help create a comfortable resting place for patients and visitors. Division of functions of the building is clearly shown through the section - consulting area, admin area and waiting area (from left to right)

A Ramp runs along the building edge to allow easy entrance of disabled visitors, and helps visually integrate the building into the site. Long series of reflective glazings and windows extends around the building walls, allows both natural lighting and neccessary privacy.

Visitors have access to the courtyard through the glass door on the right of the waiting area. Admin and consulting areas are separated from a glass sliding door. Doctors need access to medical files at reception office can get through from the staff room behind the sliding door without walking out to the waiting area.
