JUNIOR PORTFOLIO

JUNIOR PORTFOLIO 2015 This year is my second year as a graphic design major in the School of Visual Arts. I learned a lot and felt more amazing this year than last year. I did not have enough confidence to previously use a good typeface because the English alphabet was not familiar to me. This year, I have stronger typography skills through design classes. In communication design class, I learned insights such as discerning good design from bad. I learned how to brainstorm in digital class, and the instructor helped me give direction when I had trouble thinking of a new idea. My concept for the junior portfolio is ‘identity’, so the background of the cover is a pattern by using ‘JIN,’ my name. The card on the cover is my business card. Thanks to all my instructors for an important lesson. KYUNGJIN KIL

TYPOGRAPHIC SCULPTURE ABOUT TIME When questioned about my definition of time, I said that time is like waiting. The purpose of waiting can vary from individual to individual, but people are always waiting for something. Time could mean waiting for success or waiting for death. For me, time is waiting for the completion of this writing, but it can mean something totally different the next day. Therefore, the purpose of waiting is very flexible and relative to one’s current situation. INSTRUCTOR: OLGA MEZHIBOVSKAYA

“After the beating rain and fierce gusts of wind that had endured through the livelong night, there yet stood out against the brick wall one ivy leaf.” — O Henry, The Last Leaf I was inspired by O Henry’s “The Last Leaf.” The main character Johnsy suffers from pneumonia, and lies down hopelessly sick. She believes that when the last leaf on the tree outside the window falls, she will die and move away from her suffering. Her definition of time is waiting for death along with the fall of the last leaf. On the other hand, Sue’s definition of time is waiting for initiation of Johnsy’s strong will to live. Leaves falling can also mean waiting for the winter or moving on with time.

ANATOMY OF LETTERFORMS

ANATOMY OF LETTERFORMS This project is about the introduction of the anatomy of letterforms for a specific group using one typeface. The typeface that I chose is Bodoni, the target group is ballet dancers. Bodoni is a well-known classical serif, so I think Bodoni could be in good harmony with classical ballet. I also think the human body is so beautiful. The cover image of this book is only the letter “B with legs wearing ballet shoes. The colors are black, white, and magenta to suggest a simple and classical mood. Each pages is composed of one letter that offers a possible anatomy letterform on the left and related ballet poses on the right. INSTRUCTOR: RICHARD POULIN

ANATOMY OF LETTERFORMS

Classical ballet is a traditional, formal style of ballet that adheres to classical ballet technique. It is known for its aesthetics and rigorous technique (such as pointe work, turnout of the legs, and high extensions), its flowing, precise movements, and its ethereal qualities. 23

UNDERSTANDING OF TYPOGRAPHER This project is making posters about one of the designers that my professor offered. My designer is Wim Crouwel who is a Dutch graphic designer, type designer, and typographer. I used one of his impressive quotes, “We need the machine since we have no time, but the machine cannot replace the precision of the human eye and human feeling.” Inspired from his quote, I used a big eyeball based on his quote for capturing people’s attention and his design such as three-dimensional letter “C” and a mysterious icon. PARIS REVIEW “Redesign Paris Review project is about editorial design based on only some grids that I created. I created different numbers of columns for each category such as poetry, fiction, non-fiction, and interview. Therefore, I tried to make a simple design for Paris Review magazine, so the colors that I chose are just black and white. My design suggestion is that it can be easy to know which category is which when people open the magazine. INSTRUCTOR: RICHARD POULIN

SHAKESPEARE’S SONNETS Shakespeare’s sonnets are his most popular works, and a few of them have become the most widely-read poems in all of English literature. Listening to poetry out loud is totally different from normal conversation and varied rhythm and dynamics in each passages. This project is making some variations through visual rhythm and dynamics in each sentence based on the above idea. INSTRUCTOR: OLGA MEZHIBOVSKAYA

MAGAZINE PROJECT I inspired from “The Last Leaf” by O Henry. Johnsy, who is main character, got pneumonia and laid hopelessly sick. She believed that the fall of the last leaf would bring her the death and her deliverance from the suffering. In other words, in her view, time is waiting for her death as the fall of the las leaf. On the other hand, in Sue’s view, time is waiting for ability about Johnsy’s strong will for alive. In more general terms, the fall of leaves can have meaning of waiting for winter or flow of time. In other words, over time to wait. INSTRUCTOR: OLGA MEZHIBOVSKAYA

BAD NYC NYC is the home to some of the best design in the world, and of course some of the worst. This project is about finding bad branding in New York City and redesigning their logo, menu, packages and so on. The location should be my favorite place so I chose one of the restaurants where is close to my house. This restaurant is a Japanese restaurant named ‘Mimi and coco’, and the owners are sisters from Japan. I like this restaurant because it is a real Japanese restaurant, not modified for local taste. Therefore, I focused on this advantage, and I redesigned their characters on their sign board. Their characters seemed too complicated and looked even cheaper. I simplified their images and logo, and I used only three colors such as black, white and red to resemble simple Japanese design. INSTRUCTOR: DANIEL BLACKMAN

MIAMI BASEL POSTER Miami Basel consists of leading galleries from North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia and Africa that show historical work from the masters of Modern and contemporary art. All works of the highest quality are on display at this exhibition. This project is to simply create a front and back poster for this years’ event. My concept is ‘Melting’ because I think the weather of Miami Beach is hot and burning. Therefore, I made a ‘glitch’ poster by using a picture of a palm tree which is a symbol of tropical areas. NEW YORK MAGAZINE SEX ISSUE New York Magazine is one of the most popular weekly publications in NYC. One of their most popular recurring issues is their infamous ‘Sex Issue.’ My job would be to create an intriguing cover design for the issue. I wanted to make an awkward image based on sex, so I thought collage could be suitable to express my concept. Therefore, I found three photos of a woman’s body, a hand and a cave, and I combined them to make an awkward cover image. INSTRUCTOR: DANIEL BLACKMAN

CREATE AN APP

CREATE AN APP In today’s culture iPhone apps control more and more aspects of peoples’ everyday lives. Therefore, this project is about coming up with a fun and simple idea, and creating an app out of it. My app is about food recipes at late night because I love eating late. Therefore, I thought that this app’s users are worried about calories of foods and cook time, so I tried to make it proceed step-by-step. First, users can pick food types such as savory, spicy, sweet, drinks and random. Second, they can choose calories and cook time. Next, they can see tons of pictures of simple foods, and when they pick one, recipes for it. I made an app logo that is a combination between a cookie and moon. INSTRUCTOR: DANIEL BLACKMAN

SIMPLE SUPERMARKET This project is about creating a line of ultra-simple type-driven labels for a line of cereal brands that I want. The project has some limitations such as using one of seven typefaces that are professor provided and using just three colors, which are black, white and one that I want. This project is for tumblr, and it could be uploaded at simplesupermarket.tumblr.com. The real brand that I picked is Kellogg’s, and the specific products are Frosted Flakes, Cocoa Krispies and Corn Flakes. I chose three colors —sky blue, chocolate brown and mustard yellow— for each product, respectively. I chose the Akzidenz-Grotesk typeface for modern style. I made two different designs for this project. The First one seems very simple and provides information about the product such as brand name, size, product description and nutrition facts. I also made the same design for milk packages which is an unreal brand, because I thought that cereal and milk make up one set for breakfast. The second one seems like a poster based on Swiss design, so I tried to graft Swiss design upon cereal packaging. INSTRUCTOR: DANIEL BLACKMAN

BOOK PROJECT We can find great used books in New York City. This project is about reorganizing the contents from a book that I picked. The project is not only limited to editorial design for the book but is also expanded to range for design such as packaging, branding, motion design, making video and any design that I want to make. The boo I chose is The Good Cook Sauces which contents recipes about tons of sauces. My idea for the book is kit-package design for each sauce with their ingredients and recipes so people can easily make them because they do not need to measure the ingredients. REDESIGN BRAND This project is redesign mobile web, website, and creating interactive experience retail for actual brand. My brand is ‘INCASE,’ which is a brand centered on protection and mobility to meet the demands of today’s creatives. Their products promote design simplicity and beautiful utility at the convergence of lifestyle and technology. The project has some limitations such as using one typeface, three sizes of font, and three colors, which are black, white and one color that I want. ASSEMBLAGE This project is about making assemblage. Assemblage is an artistic form or medium usually created on a defined substrate that consists of three-dimensional elements projecting out of or from the substrate. It is similar to collage, a two-dimensional medium. It is part of the visual arts, it typically uses found objects, but is not limited to these materials. I remade used bible to assemblage looked like a rest area. Therefore, I built the skeletons of a house, and I made a chair by using pages of the bible for same texture. INSTRUCTOR: CRISTOS GIANAKOS
