Dear Heritage Hill Residents, What is a community? Well by definition, it’s a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common; a condition of sharing; Heritage Hill is as special as its slogan “A village within a city” and this is truly how I’ve experienced this wonderful community and Estate. My first two and a half months have been, in a nutshell, hectic, awesome, productive, and exhilarating! We have pruned trees, upgraded parks, created newly landscaped areas, and won a Silver Medal at the South African Landscaping Association for the Estate. On the security side, we have recently upgraded the IT backbone of our Access Control and Security systems, improved processes and operational structures and there are many more exciting projects on the way! On the social side of things, we have had a festive community braai and a special Senior lunch and we knocked it out of the park at our recent Blood Drive with 47 people supporting the event I am proud to call Heritage Hill “my” Estate and I have been welcomed here in true community fashion, especially by the HOA staff and Board of Directors. I look forward to further growing and developing this wonderful Estate and engaging more with you. I encourage you to contact me with any issues you may experience. Here’s to always having loving ways and perfect days! 2022 | I ssue 4 7

POOL COVERS
The estate lifestyle in South Africa has boomed in recent years, driving a proliferation of residential gated communities and a surge in demand for properties on estates. While these communities are favoured for security and convenience, estate homeowners with pools have slightly different factors to consider when it comes to pool maintenance, according to PowerPlastics Pool Covers. “Estate pool owners definitely have different parameters. Two critical issues are sustainability and child safety in this environment,” says Roger Bester, Managing Director of PowerPlastics Pool Covers. The most important factor for estate pools is ensuring child safety. In fact this is a regulatory issue, governed by the SABS through its building Standards. Where there are no individual boundary walls or fences enclosing each property, the pool can be considered a drowning risk. According to the safety Standard (SANS 10134), pool safety must be provided on each property. The most effective way to address this is with the SABS-certified PowerPlastics Solid Safety Cover. PowerPlastics Pool Covers was the original company to design what is now the best-selling solid safety cover. Compared to other safety methods like fences or nets, this cover forms a complete barrier over the water, allowing for safety as well as water, power and chemical savings. A growing trend within the South African estate lifestyle is the eco-estate or green gated community, developed and maintained to support sustainability. Green certification and related tools for the domestic setting continue to evolve with solutions driven by new technologies and demand driven by better awareness.
Water and power efficiency are the top criteria for green ratings on estates. A pool pump can consume up to 12% of a household's power usage, and in summer, the average pool can lose up to 105 litres a day to evaporation. The GeoBubble range of bubble covers from PowerPlastics Pool Covers is favoured for its performance and longevity. An EnergyGuard GeoBubble cover reduces energy demand by 50%. Water management is also significant for estates, many of which are developed around vibrant natural ecosystems. One can't simply let backwash water drain into the ecosystem. With a GeoBubble cover, chlorine demand can be reduced by as much as 60%. Evaporation is also curtailed almost entirely. “So what is the best pool cover for this gated environment? Where children are a concern, the first choice is a PowerPlastics Solid Safety Cover. A GeoBubble cover is the wise investment for any pool where children are not a factor. “And the best design? The best estate pool is one that is planned with a pool cover in mind. It is a smaller pool with sturdy coping, clean lines and unrestricted access around all sides with no water features, plants or rockeries as these hinder the securing of a cover to restrict children from entering the pool. Importantly, it is a pool within a home that understands and respects natural capital i.e. the ecosystem's resources on which we depend,” concludes Bester. PowerPlastics Pool Covers offers the most comprehensive range of pool covers, available across SA. Visit www.powerplastics.co.za

GARDENING
How to attract birds to your garden Now is an excellent time to provide nesting, resting, feeding and breeding sites for birds in your garden. By life is a garden
Bird-friendly plants The best feeding programme for birds is to plant shrubs and trees which offer nature’s menu. Aloes, watsonias, lion’s ear (Leonotis spp.), red-hot pokers ( spp.) and wachendorfias will attract nectar feeding birds such as the sunbird. Seed eating birds are attracted to the seed heads of grasses and grains. Plant patches of mixed bird seed and you’ll be fascinated to see the response from local birds. Seed eaters also thrive the seeds of ordinary daisies (such as the euryops daisy). Leave the dried out dead heads of daisies for as long as you can to give the birds time to take most of the seed at the end of summer. To attract fruit eating birds, such as the loeries, plant fruit producing plants. Try the tree fuchsia (Halleria lucida), dune crow-berry (Rhus crenata) or white stinkwood (Celtis africana). Did you know that the local weavers, sparrows, loeries, sunbirds and even crested barbets will flock to your garden if you discover how to plant up bird-friendly plants or install a nesting box, bird feeder or bird bath in your garden. This is a basic guide on how to attract birds to your garden: 1 0 Iss ue 3 | 2022
GARDENING
Roosting sites Established trees will naturally provide a source of shelter and roosting spots for many birds and a garden which is well planted with indigenous trees will attract numerous birds throughout the year. Good roosting sites are provided by the Henkel’s yellowwood (Podocarpus henkelii), fever tree (Acacia xanthophloea), karee (Searsia lancea), sweet thorn (Acacia karroo) or buffalo thorn (Ziziphus mucronata. Creepers such as the black-eyed Susan (Thunbergia elata) can be draped around the branches of trees to provide a secluded nesting site for robins or flycatchers. Grasses, including reeds and bulrushes are valuable suppliers of nesting material to weavers who suspend their nests from trees.
Mulch and compost Leave fallen leaves and logs in the garden as these will provide micro-habitat for various insects, grubs and worms, which will in turn attract insect feeders such as Cape robinchats, Karoo and olive thrushes as well as African hoopoes. These birds love the dense undergrowth of gardens where they turn over leaves and debris in search of grubs. Dead logs and tree trunks make ideal nesting spots for birds such as barbets and woodpeckers.
Water for birds Every garden should have a bird bath in the quieter part of the garden preferably near thick foliage and established trees, so that the birds 2022 | I ssue 4 11
GARDENING can perch nearby and not feel exposed. Avoid placing a bird bath directly underneath tree branches, as falling leaves and bird droppings may soil the water. Keep the bird bath topped up over winter, as many birds will frequently visit to drink and bath. Bird baths come in various shapes and sizes, but most importantly, they should be anchored securely so that they don’t topple over.
Feed the birds Feeding stations for garden birds come in a range of shapes and sizes. A common variety is the seed-dispersing tube type feeder whereby you place bird seed on top by removing a cap. A feeding plate attaches to the bottom and this will hold the seeds which are gravity fed. As the birds feed, the seeds will filter down and spread over the plate. These are often equipped with small perches, allowing only small birds such as finches and sparrows to feed, but making it difficult for large seed eaters such as doves and pigeons to perch and feed, which would otherwise rapidly finish off the bird seed. These feeders can be hung from a tree branch. Other bird feeders include platforms where bread, seed, fruit and suet and can placed. They often have spikes where fruit can be anchored for fruit eating birds. These bird feeders can be placed on top of a sturdy pole or hung from a tree branch. For the really dedicated, consider breeding your own mealworm colony, which will provide a delicious treat for grub feeding birds. 1 2 Iss ue 4 | 2022
Nesting boxes Hollowed out logs, available from garden centres, are a favourite with barbets who use them for breeding. Anchor the logs vertically on tree trunks several metres off the ground. Traditional square or rectangular box nests are also available and can be anchored securely around various parts of the garden.

GARDENING TIPS FOR

close together and are heavy feeders.
Trimming
Kikuyu lawns need to cut short by setting the mower on its lowest setting or scarified by a professional. This is to remove the old dead mat that accumulated during winter. Fertilize or apply lawn dressing and sufficient water to start the new season lawn growing. LM lawn should not be cut short, no lawn dressing is applied, but sufficient water and fertilizer is required. Make sure that all standard roses, young trees and shrubs are securely staked. If compost was applied in autumn as mulch to shrubs and beds, it can now be tilled into the soil with a slow-release fertiliser of your choice. Apply a new layer of compost or mulch and do not till again. The odd weed can be removed by hand.
This would be the first step in preparation for summer. Check long term weather forecasts to ensure no more cold spells are predicted. Prune poinsettia, hypericum, solanum, canary creepers, golden shower and Buddlya to remove dead or overgrowing plant material. If by chance your roses still need to be pruned, it can still be done in August. Prune Wisteria and Mayflower as soon as they have finished flowering. Hedges like Duranta, Plumbago, and even Carissa macrocarpa with severe cold damage on the top, can be trimmed back to the first green growth. Remember to apply fertiliser and compost at soil level. Hedge plants are grown
Preparation
Large potted plants can be rejuvenated by removing the top layer of old potting soil and replacing it with fresh soil and compost. Do not forget to mulch. 2022 | I ssue 4 13

New ideas
Divide ornamental grasses, daylilies and phormium plants.
A worm farm is a way of getting rid of kitchen waste, resulting in wonderful worm compost and worm leachate (worm pee). This can be used to nourish pot plants, orchids and even garden plants.
Easy growing annuals such as Marigold can be sown directly in the garden. The seed need to be kept moist at all times until germination. Once 2 mature leaves are visible water requirement will be less. Seasonal bulbs that are no longer flowering, but still have leaves need to receive specialised bulb food until the leaves die down. Dormant bulbs can be left in the soil until the next flowering season. Discard tulip bulbs after flowering as artificial growing conditions are created for tulips to flower in our climate.
1 4 Iss ue 3 | 2022
Growing indigenous plants in our gardens has been promoted for many years Try planting a collection of species endemic to your specific area. Aloe ecklonis and Gazania are examples suitable for summer rainfall gardens. Different flowering times will provide food for bees and birds throughout the year. As every species has specific pests, it will limit the use of pesticides.

Drink to Your Health By Justine Heald
When it comes to maintaining overall wellbeing, gut health remains top of mind – and for good reason. Your body consists of fungi, bacteria and viruses that make up your larger microbiome. In a nutshell, probiotics are the good, living bacteria that assist in warding off the bad bacteria that cause problems with your gut, immune and overall system. Think of yourself as a house plant, if you will (I’d go with a lucky bamboo). Living soil, consisting of a symbiosis between fungi, protozoa and bacteria, is the microbial life essential to root, stem and foliage health. The same idea extends to us. However, chemical farming practices have impacted the soil and thus the food we eat, and without these living probiotics, it’s little wonder we’re facing major problems like 1 6 Iss ue 4 | 2022
obesity and mental health issues. Adding a probiotic supplement to a healthy diet is one good way to feed healthy gut bacteria. While there are countless options on the market, we’re currently loving ours in liquid form. Liquid probiotics come in two main forms: concentrated as a supplement or as part of a probiotic drink (think kombucha, kefir, or tepache). If you find a liquid probiotic with a taste you enjoy, it will be much easier to sip on it throughout the day than to have to remember to take yet another pill. It can also be far less painful to get the little ones to drink a liquid probiotic (especially if it’s tasty!) than to swallow a pill. What’s more, liquid probiotics often contain other nutrients, like vitamins and minerals.

Add the kombucha to a big glass jar and then add the tea mixture (remember, make sure it’s cold!). Seal the jar shut with coffee filters or a few layers of paper towel and secure with a rubber band. 3. Patience is key. National Arbor
Week
We South Africans celebrate Arbor Week instead of Arbor Day, so we have a whole week dedicated to planting trees. Arbor Week is celebrated in South Africa in the first week of September every year, and is an ideal time to encourage South Africans to join in community ‘greening’ activities. President Cyril Ramaphosa’s call for the planting of ten million trees for the next five years in South Africa echoed during the country’s 2021 Arbor Week. The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF), as the custodian of forestry in South Africa, is responsible for the campaign. National Arbor Week is an opportune time to call on all South Africans to plant indigenous

trees as a practical and symbolic gesture of sustainable environmental management. It affords the government, the private sector, non-governmental and community based organisations and the public to be involved in “greening” their communities. Planting trees and greening human settlements takes place in communities. It is therefore important for the public to join hands with partners in local government and community-based organisations. Greening refers to an integrated approach to the planting, care and management of all vegetation in urban and rural areas, to secure multiple benefits for communities Greening in the South African context takes place in towns, townships and informal settlements specifically because in the past the latter mentioned areas were disadvantaged in terms of planning for parks as well as tree planting in streets and open spaces.
ENVIRONMENTAL
What is the purpose of Arbor Week? The oxygen we breathe comes from trees, which provide more than aesthetic and ornamental value. Since greening landscapes remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, they are an important defence against the effects of climate change. As a result of desertification and urbanization, many environments have become barren. Trees were not planted in township areas in the past, and this had an adverse effect on climate change exposure due to barren urban landscapes. In South Africa’s cities, trees will play a greater role in cooling urban spaces as temperatures rise. There are many ways you can contribute to the greening of our landscapes through community mobilization.
For this year, Wild Route Nursery is giving residents a 10% discount when buying trees from them by using the code ESTATES10OFF22

What Is Scandinavian Interior Design? Key Principles to Follow By Elizabeth Sweet
Master the spartan, natureinspired aesthetic of Scandinavian design with advice from seasoned experts. For Swedish interior designer and stylist Pella Hedeby, Nordic design produces “an airy, calm and relaxed feeling.” Her best advice: Keep color tones and textures aligned. “A guiding principle is to establish harmony with one’s environment,” she says. Nordic homes are “harmonious” and truly easy to live in. Learn the top elements of Scandinavian interiors, below, to incorporate the soothing aesthetic into your own home.
Use Natural Materials Scandinavians find great inspiration in the outdoors. “We honor it with the use of nature’s materials,” Hedeby says. This includes wood and stone that patina beautifully with age. “A local limestone such as Norrvange,” is ideal, Hedeby says, as well as “concrete and plaster or matte painted walls.” Look for textures with natural warmth, she suggests. “Schemes are inspired by pale sea views, white stone beaches, and the grays of the winter woods and mountains.”

INTERIOR These comforting textures work well for sofas and chairs, too. “Sheep’s wool is typically used for upholstery fabrics and pelts,” Hadland explains. “Colors tend to be natural and undyed. Since chemical dyes were expensive and less frequently used, grays, blacks, beiges, browns, and whites became the prominent colors.”
Keep It Simple Hedeby says Scandinavians follow the basic principle that less is more. “The decluttered style is easy to live with, and the materials age beautifully with a natural patina. It’s sustainable and long-lasting,” she says. “With a beautiful base with natural warmth, you don’t need a lot of things to get an inviting feeling at home.”

Stick to a soothing palette of whites, warm grays, and sandy hues, Hedeby says. The designer and stylist’s favorite wall color is a shade of greige—10341 from Norwegian paint company Jotun Lady. Painting with added minerals can provide a natural lime paint texture, too. If you’re building or renovating, honor the beauty of raw materials. Choose “a divine Dinesen floor and keep the rest pure and simple.”

Nordic spaces lack excessive ornamentation, so start editing! According to Hadland, the Nordic style is “clean and clear, avoiding clutter or disorganization.”
Add Ambience with Lighting Due to extreme changes in temperature and sunlight, table and floor lamps are crucial in Nordic countries, Hedeby says. “Creating a warm ambience and convivial setting for the home, especially in winter, has been an important priority.” The quintessential living room in a nice Scandinavian home will have several lighting zones with up to 10 different fixtures, from pendants to floor and table lights,
Once your space is a blank canvas, add Danish design staples to bring the Scandi interior to life. Hedeby recommends Carl Hansen’s Wishbone Chair by Hans J. Wegner and the J39 Chair by Borge Mogensen. “They give an instant Nordic minimalist and Scandinavian feel to an interior,” she says.
Layer Natural Textures A Scandinavian space isn’t complete without hygge, a word meaning warmth and comfort. “Adding some cozy textures, sheepskins, and blankets in linen and wool create that soft Nordic look,” Hedeby says.

WELLNESS
BEAT THE BURNOUT by Wellness Warehouse
Burnout is a blanket term referring to a state of emotional, physical and mental exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress. When you begin to feel like you’re burning out, everything in your life is affected – your career, social life, family and relationships as well as the image you have of yourself. You may feel overwhelmed, emotionally drained, and unable to meet the demands of life. Our ‘always on’ modern-day culture coupled with the daily stresses of life and the high expectations we place upon ourselves create a clear recipe for burnout. Stress and burnout are closely related. The stress could be a result of anything, including trauma (for example retrenchment, divorce, bereavement, accident and injury, etc.), financial issues, work pressures, an abusive relationship or illness. When we perceive ourselves to be under threat physically or psychologically, the adrenal glands activate the sympathetic 3 0 Iss ue 4 | 2022
nervous system and release a flood of hormones including adrenalin and cortisol. This instinctual acute stress response is sometimes called ‘fight, flight or freeze’. The primitive response to stress prepares the body to react to the danger as it did for our ancestors, and it may become a default pattern. Under extreme or prolonged stress, this cascade of hormones floods the body constantly and overloads the adrenals. This eventually results in a depletion leading to adrenal burnout or chronic fatigue. It can also lead to systemic inflammation, making you susceptible to illness and chronic health conditions. Burnout is not plain exhaustion or job dissatisfaction. The truth is that you may not even realise that you’re suffering from burnout until you’re presented with a health crisis or a mental or physical breakdown.
SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF BURNOUT • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
Feeling irritated and argumentative, or losing your temper often Reacting irrationally or disproportionately Strain in personal or professional relationships Chronic fatigue, exhaustion, lack of energy and feeling ‘flat’ Depression decreased motivation and discouragement A weak immune system or constant illness Feeling tearful, overwhelmed and anxious, or suffering panic attacks Feeling numb or empty An inability to focus or concentrate, poor memory or foggy thinking Poor decision-making or unhealthy choices Weight gain or loss, or an increase or decrease in appetite Increasing or new medical conditions Digestive issues Despair, loss of hope or faith, cynicism or negativity, and self-doubt Ineffectiveness
RECOVERY FROM BURNOUT
WELLNESS you to ask deeper questions, like: “What changes do I need to make to reduce my stress levels?”; “Why do I believe success means working until I drop?” and “How can I improve my self-care to avoid burnout?” This can lead to amazing and useful discoveries!
SLEEP SOUNDLY Are you getting between seven and nine hours of quality sleep per night? Running on empty is not a badge of honour. Poor sleep has dire consequences for your body and mind, including a weakened immune system and poor cognition. If your sleep is compromised by insomnia, intermittent waking or sleep apnoea, this can exacerbate or even lead to burnout. Practise good sleep hygiene by avoiding screens one hour before bedtime, keeping electronic devices out of the bedroom, having a light early dinner, practising relaxation exercises, and avoiding caffeine and alcohol at night.
PRACTISE MINDFULNESS
Get in touch with your emotions! Being able to process emotions constructively is crucial. Breathing techniques, meditation, visualisation and other stress management tools can help. First, acknowledge that you are burnt out! Pushing Becoming aware of what’s happening in your through won’t fix the problem. NEW TOYOTA STARLET MORE STAR QUALITY
Star-worthy Success
Launched in September 2020, the Toyota Starlet was met with rapturous applause and instantly cemented itself within the highly-competitive B-segment in the passenger car market. It’s combination of stylish good looks, traditional hatchback layout, comprehensive specification level and impressive frugality at the pumps, earned the Starlet top marks amongst customers.
More Star, More Car
The new Starlet promises to deliver even more, on all fronts. The front styling ups the visual ante with sleek headlamps (LED dependant on grade), unified by a sleek chrome ‘brow’ and prominent lower air dam - creating a signature Toyota look. Widemounted fog lamps (grade dependant) replete with Cshaped trim, add to the overall appeal. The side profile echoes that of the outgoing model, with well-proportioned elements and surface detailing. Blacked-out A-pillar and chrome waistline trim, draw your eyes across the silhouette, which terminates in a sloping roofline with sporty roof spoiler (including a high-level brake light). The body coloured side view mirrors now also feature built-in turn signal lamps. The aft view features stylish two-piece rear light clusters and a broad, chrome tailgate garnish which completes the sporty yet elegant profile. A revised interior design features swooping accent lines and multi-hued detailing, with a large centrally mounted infotainment screen and easy-to-read instrument binnacle. Here designers focused on creating a stylish design while maintaining excellent ergonomics. The upper facia incorporates a striking, metallic grey surround, which extends from the centrally-mounted ventilation 4 4 Iss ue 4 | 2022
outlets to the passenger-side air vent. Below this, the dark blue panel trim echoes the door panel trim - creating a cohesive interior design. New front seats feature an improved contour focusing on lateral and shoulder support, additional bolstering and two-tone accents to complement the interior.
ESTATE MOTORING NEWS
A centre console with adjustable centre armrest aids front passenger comfort, while the interior is equipped with multiple cup and bottle holders for added convenience. The rear seats feature enhancements too, with improved thigh and shoulder support. Spaciousness and comfort remain a hallmark of the new Starlet. A 60/40 split seatback provides the option to expand the 314 litre boot space and create even more utility. The sporty, three-spoke steering wheel includes matching grey metallic inserts and a ‘flat-bottom’ edge, large Toyota insignia and conveniently-placed steering switches - to provide the perfect driver interface.
Specification Star
In response to customer feedback and market trends, the new Starlet also boasts an upgraded specification roster. All models now come equipped with a touchscreen audio system with USB, Bluetooth and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto interface, as well as two rear USB chargers (USB-A and USB-C). Automatic Climate Control, power-retractable mirrors, electric windows and Multi-Information Display (MID) are features on the standard menu. The infotainment system is synced with the on-board computer allowing occupants to access and display vehicle trip information alongside cellphone contacts, date & time, audio system status and multimedia inputs - all from the conveniently grouped home screen view. Detailed screens for each of the functions can also be called up. Driver assistance is aided by rear parking sensors (PDC), Hill Assist Control (HAC), Vehicle Stability Control, ABS and EBD across the board. Driver & Passenger airbags are also provided with the flagship Xr grade featuring Side & Curtain versions too, for a total tally of 6. ISOFIX anchor points are standard across the range. The top-tier Xr model adds Smart Entry, Push Start and Cruise Control amongst other niceties. A reverse camera and auto-dimming rear-view mirror add even more convenience to the Xr package, while an additional 2 tweeter speakers (total of 6) interface with a larger 23cm infotainment screen. The MultiInformation Display (MID) is upgraded to the colour TFT type and boasts a variety of telemetry-themed screens including a g-sensor and power/torque monitor.
Peace of Mind
All Starlet models are sold with a complimentary 3-services/45 000 km service plan – with 15 000 km service intervals. A 3-year/100 000 km warranty is also provided. Customers can additionally purchase service plan and warranty extensions from their local Toyota dealer – and they benefit from the biggest dealer network in the country (over 220 outlets). 2022 | I ssue 4 45

WINTER FUN WALK
ESTATE NEWS
The Garden Group reckoned that the smell of a braai on a cold Saturday morning would be just the thing to us out of bed for our annual Winter Fun Walk, and boy were they right. Many villagers and their fourlegged friends gathered around the Rose Garden to set out on a 4km walk through our estate, eager to get some morning exercise followed by a wholesome boerie roll for breakfast. Along the route we got to catch up with our neighbors, stare at all the stunning houses and lush parks, noticing new details and appreciating the winter color pallet on the trees. It is truly amazing how taking a different route than we might have normally done on our daily walk opens up our eyes once more to the beauty that is Heritage Hill. With the blood flowing swiftly through our veins, hunger started to set in just in time as we reached the end of the trail. We were welcomed back at the fires by The Garden Group standing ready with warm boerewors rolls for everyone. A great way to start a Saturday morning and a wonderful sense of community. Thank you to The Garden Group for sponsoring our annual Winter Fun Walk and to all the villagers and their pups that joined.

SOUP & BLANKET DRIVE
ESTATE NEWS
Thank you to all our residents for another successful Winter Warmer community project. It has been absolutely heartwarming over the years to see how our village pulls together to support those less fortunate, and this year was no different. Dozens of soup cans, nonperishable food items, dog and cat food, as well as lots of warm blankets were dropped off at the gate house during the month of May. Proceeds were delivered to Kids Paradise in Olievenhoutbosch and the Centurion SPCA. As a village we are thankful to be able to make a difference in our community and we hope to continue our contributions for many more years to come.

Spinach & Pepper Roulade ESTATE NEWS WELLNESS
Serves 4 - 6 INGREDIENTS • 4 red peppers • 1 tsp salt, plus extra for seasoning • 4 tsp olive oil • 4 tsp vinegar • 400 g spinach, chopped • 3 eggs, separated • Pepper, to taste • 250 g cream cheese with chives • 50 g sundried tomatoes METHOD 1. Preheat the oven to 180 °C and line a Swiss roll baking pan with baking paper. 2. Grill the peppers in the oven, until the skins are blackened. Remove from the oven and place in a bowl, then cover with clingwrap. As the peppers sweat and cool, the skin is loosened, making it easy to remove from the peppers. Rinse the peppers to remove any leftover blackened skin. 3. Place the peppers in a bowl, then add 1 teaspoon of salt, the olive oil and vinegar. Allow to marinate in the vinegar mixture for 30 minutes. 4. Cook the spinach for 5 minutes, remove from the heat and allow to cool slightly. Squeeze the water out of the spinach and set aside.
Excerpted from Veggielicious by Mokgadi Itsweng, published by NB Publishers and available at leading bookstores and online
5. Place the spinach, egg yolks, salt and pepper in a blender and blend until smooth and well mixed. 6. Whisk the egg whites until stiff, then fold into the spinach mixture. 7. Spread the mixture evenly over the baking paper and bake in the oven for 15 minutes until firm to the touch. Allow to cool. 8. Once cooled, slowly and carefully loosen the spinach layer from the baking paper, making sure not to tear it. This makes it easier to roll. 9. Spread the cream cheese evenly over the spinach layer, then top with the peppers and sundried tomatoes. 10. Slowly roll up the roulade, using the paper to guide you. 11. Wrap with clingwrap and refrigerate for 1 hour to firm up before slicing and serving. 6 0 Iss ue 4 | 2022

GENERATION IN THE VILLAGE We’ve come to live with the humming sound of generators in our Village. Walking around our beautiful Estate after 8pm on a Sunday evening during loadshedding is quite an experience. A very noisy experience compared to many other Sunday evenings during the year.
2. NEVER connect it straight to your house using an extension cord with a male plug on both ends. These are called Deadman’s Cables for a reason. 3. Have a change-over switch installed. This will protect you and your house and make sure you can never accidentally connect your generator to the live grid. 4. Make sure that the extension cord you are using is the correct thickness. A 5kVA generator can supply 22A ampere, yet most extensions you buy off the shelve are only rated for 10A.
