ESTATE NEWS HH Dear Residents, We are now already experiencing the first bite of winter and can expect some more icy days. Nevertheless, we had a very warm summer and it is time to enjoy some warm winter clothes, fireplaces and a good red wine.

Letter from the

Estate Manager

I am sad to have to remind you about the very unfortunate incident we experienced at our resident entrance lane on Thursday, 10 May. The only fortunate thing about it is the outcome was not so good for the thugs that tried to hijack one of our residents and we are thankful for that. Please be vigilant at all times when leaving the Estate or returning from work or shopping centres and always keep your doors locked and windows closed. The HOA is planning an anti-hijack training day on Saturday, 16 June, in the Rose Garden, so please watch this space. Our Directors are in the process of

evaluating all security procedures and we will be implementing new measures to try and safeguard our residents outside the main gate. We are planning a Special General Meeting to inform all our members of the progress with regards to the clubhouse and facilities on stand 1114. Please keep an eye on your Heritage Hill App for news on this. Thank you to all our residents for your efforts to save water. We have made good progress on this but please continue to use water sparingly. Although we have had fairly good rains the Tshwane council has lifted the water restrictions previously announced. You are allowed to water your garden when required after 17h00 daily until 08h00 am, no hoses are allowed to wash cars. Kindly inform your gardener of these restrictions too. When you purchase property in a Home Owners Association (HOA) you become

all documents on a regular basis and to supply the security office with the updated document.

Better HOA Management leads to:

Some work permits expire every three months, others take longer. It is however our responsibility to ensure the legal status of all labourers.

• Higher property values due to better management. • More control in ensuring the right rules and regulations are in place. • Improved decision-making due to thorough understanding of the Law. So please assist the HOA by ensuring proper management by sharing your expertise.

Legal documents: • Legal Asylum/work permit.

We are in the process of verifying documents of all our foreign domestics and garden workers, as it came to our attention that there are quite a number of these documents outstanding for such workers.

When the Asylum has been applied for, the Refugee will be able to obtain a Section 22 permit, known as the Asylum Seeker Permit. This usually grants a temporary stay in South Africa for anything up to three months (90 days). This will grant the Office time to process the application.

It is important that we, the HOA, conform to legal requirements and not allow illegal immigrants. We are requesting your co-operation to renew

Five-Year Refugee Permits The five-year refugee permit may be issued to someone who has remained as an asylum seeker in South Africa for a

period of five years continuously. They will have had to be refugees for those five years after their asylum application has been granted, and they must be refugees under the 1998 Act, which defines people who may seek asylum in South Africa. After this period of five years, they will then be eligible for status as a permanent resident of South Africa.

I want to leave you with the following from Anton Chekhov, to think about. “People don’t notice whether it’s winter or summer when they’re happy.” Kind regards

Fred Botes

We are proud to be able to make a difference throughout the year - through our monthly donations to Hanna Charity and Empowerment Foundation

COMMUNITY PROJECT HH

Hanna Charity and Empowerment Foundation was registered as a Non-Profitable Organization in 2008. We believe in the potential of people living in poverty. Our Foundation’s mission is to take hands with the poor and marginalized people of South Africa.

W

e provide personal attention and direct benefits to children, youth, the ageing and their families so they may live with dignity, achieve their desired potential and participate fully in society. Hanna Charity & Empowerment Foundation supports communities with all the basic services such as playgroups, soup kitchens, skills development, job creation, clothing banks, social and psychological support, libraries etc. We start all these projects in a

Wendy House, because we want to help the poorest of the poor and most of these people live in RDP houses or squat in somebody’s backyard. We use the little space we have as effective as possible and hire the space from the community which in turn, results into a small income for these people. The community then starts working from the Wendy Houses. This is where our Job Creation then takes off for those involved. Someone will run the soup kitchen or clothing bank and somebody else will become an assistant to the teacher or librarian. As soon as a sponsor kindly invests in a more permanent structure we can move our projects out of the Wendy houses. We provide a place of safety to several children (from these communities) and we have now founded our Hanna House of Safety. We have a housefather and mother which are contributing a great deal in providing the structure needed for these children to develop into worthy adults. Relationships of mutual respect require acceptance of the equality of all persons. Equality of all persons comes from their essential dignity and is reflected in relationships that are without religious or other prejudice, that are multicultural, reciprocal and

empowering. Sponsorship of children, youth and the elderly is the highest priority of the Hanna Charity and Empowerment Foundation. We receive no support from the Government. Our primary means of support comes from individual sponsors and Companies. Our approach to managing administrative expenses and reserves is one of balanced austerity. The organisation seeks to maximize the amount sent to the field for sponsored members and projects while allowing for adequate investment so that we have sufficient resources to respond to the urgent needs of sponsored members and their families. Hanna Charity and Empowerment Foundation is registered with the Department of Social Development as a non-profit organization (NPO) and is a SARS approved organization (PBO) for purposes of section 18A(1)(a) of the Act and donations to the organization will be tax deductible in the hands of the donors in terms of and subject to the limitations prescribed in section 18A of the Act, and donations by or to the organization are exempt from donations tax in terms of section 56(1)(h) of the Act.

HH COMMUNITY PROJECT

Projects; Soup Kitchens We start in a community with a soup kitchen to earn the people’s trust and to get to know the families and their specific needs. We provide the whole family with a cooked meal as well as a food parcel depending on sponsorships for that specific soup kitchen. We have permanent staff at our office who cook for all the different communities / schools.

Clothing Bank We open a clothing bank in a Wendy house where families can come and collect second hand clothing on a monthly basis to meet their specific needs. We also hand out clothes when we have our soup kitchens, depending on the donations we receive.

Pikanini We start an early childhood development program in each community where parents can bring their little ones to play and to receive two meals a day for free. The kids learn basic skills at our playgroups and receive the love and care they need. We use people from the communities to assist the teacher and this forms part of our job creation program.

Womanhood / Sisterhood Issue 3 | 2018 | Heritage Hill Estate 12

Women come together on a weekly basis to discuss any personal problems they may have with a professional councillor or psychologist. They also learn new skills such as needlework or crafts which they then continue to do during the week. Womanhood is a lot of fun and the ladies sometimes go on outings outside of their community. With Sisterhood, we support our teenage girls. We teach them very important life skills. Our councillor listens to their problems and specific needs and give guidance where needed. They also receive toiletries and special gifts depending on donations received from our sponsors. We assist them in becoming ladies and aspire to break the cycle of poverty they were born into by building on their dreams.

Prayer Groups Some of the ladies from the communities get together once a week to pray for that specific community and their families. This changes the mindset of the ladies and instead of fighting, they grow spiritually and support each other to become better wives and mothers to their children.

Libraries In each community we start a library in a Wendy. Our librarian is usually one of the older ladies from the community who has great people skills and desperately needs an income. The Library has developed into a

place where, not only the children can do homework and / or their projects, but also a place where the whole family is motivated to start reading books to empower themselves with knowledge, open up new worlds and realize new opportunities.

Exercise Wit our area managers, we encourage people from our communities to become more active. As a result of not having the equipment, the Area Managers occasionally take them out to run through the streets of their specific community. Before a race like, the SPAR women’s race or Sisters for Blisters, the community will get together and prepare themselves for the race. Needless to say, our people love these races!! For some of the people from the different communities the day out at the SPAR RACE is their only outing for the year.

Skills Development We have different programs in our communities where we teach people new skills. The skills taught depends wholly on that of the Volunteers available to assist. Families learn new skills, like paper art, karate, sport

pottery, acting, crochet etc. We endeavour to teach them specials skills which they can apply to earn a little bit of extra money. Most our our people own only a few cents as they only sell newspapers for a living.

Job Creation We employ people from the community to help their own community. In every area we only have one Area Manager and Social Worker. The rest of the people working for us in the various communities are people from that particular community. These individuals can now earn money to make a better living for their families.

The following children are in the Hanna Charity Safe House: Ephraim Tshabalala - 15 years Didi Tshabalala - 9 years Aaliah Ebrahim - 9 years Xara Ebrahim - 6 years Amirah Ebrahim - 5 years Giovanni Ebrahim - 4years

What should be in your

kids lunch boxes?

Just like you, your children need to perform mentally and physically during the day. And with 30-50% of their daily food intake taking place during “school hours, it means what you pack in their lunch boxes is essential to how they will feel and function during the day.

Issue 3 | 2018 | Heritage Hill Estate 19

HH HEALTH & WELLNESS

M

ake sure your children’s lunch boxes contain the following 5 essentials:

1.Water

H20 is needed to help the brain function optimally, enhance focus, prevent brain fatigue and headaches. Make sure your child stays hydrated during the day by packing a 500ml – 750ml BPA free bottle filled with water.

2. Colourful fruits & veg Red fruits are a good source of antioxidants, fibre and Vitamin C, while blue/purple fruits contain nutrients that help with memory. Colourful crunchy vegetables on the other hand will help your child focus better. Pack a fruit and some vegetables. For e.g. a red apple and carrot or cucumber sticks (with a humus or avo dip if needed).

Issue 3 | 2018 | Heritage Hill Estate 20

3. Meat/protein

Avoid packing the following items:

Proteins assist the body with bone and muscle building. With growing children in mind this is very important. Pack slices of meat (separate or on a sandwich), a hardboiled egg, nut butters or any other item high in protein your child enjoys.

• • • • • •

4. Dairy Dairy is a good source of calcium and vitamins essential to ensuring good bone and teeth health. It is also a natural source of Vitamin B12, which is a great energiser. Include a dairy product like a small yoghurt, cottage cheese etc.

5. Whole grain starch Whole grains are complex carbohydrates. They are a great source of fibre and Omega 3s, and due to the slow release of glucose it offers sustained energy, mental alertness and improved mood. Include things like low GI or rye sandwiches, bran or oat muffins, rye crackers, wholegrain pitas etc.

Fruit juices Muesli bars high in sugar, fat and refined starch. Crackers with high salt content Flavoured milk Dried fruit Processed meats

Tips to make packing lunches easier: • • • •

Plan and prepare meals before the week starts. Make things that can be frozen, like oat muffins, fish cakes or smoothies, in bulk. Use leftovers. Research new recipes to keep things interesting.

Natural immune boosting foods to eat more of this winter

With winter here we all know it is only a matter of time before you, your children or partner brings “it” home. No, we are not talking about the clown from the Stephen King horror, but something equally frightening…flu.

Issue 3 | 2018 | Heritage Hill Estate 21

HH HEALTH & WELLNESS

Although there are many immune boosting tablets and concoctions on the market, you can boost your immune naturally by including more of the following into your diet: 1. Garlic – Vampires aren’t the only evil that fears this pungent bulb. Garlic contains allicin, an

organosulfur compound that helps to fight infections and bacteria. Now you have an excuse to smell like garlic every day.

2. Oats – Don’t skip your morning breakie oats this winter. Not only is oats a great source of fibre but it also contains beta-glucan, a polysaccharides that activates immune cells naturally.

3. Citrus – Yes, we all know that citrus is high in Vitamin C. And yes, we are all aware that it assists

with the production of white blood cells, the body’s natural line of protection. But why are we still taking a daily Vitamin C supplement instead of getting it directly from the source? Aim to eat more citrus this winter. A daily orange, squeeze of lemon in your tea or grated lime zest over a meal can help to defend your body.

4. Ginger – Ginger contains phytochemicals and antioxidants that help your body fight disease. Add some freshly grated ginger to your food or tea. Not only is it nutritious but delicious too.

5. Yoghurt – Good gut health is where a good immune system begins. And probiotics is one of the best ways to improve your gut health. Yoghurt is a great source of probiotics.

FIT LIVING That warm coffee after a morning run. That breakfast that tastes even more delicious after a tough workout session. That feeling, oh yes, that feeling of accomplishment, of feeling relaxed and satisfied, thinking…“you’ve done it again you sexy beast”. And they call you crazy… Ever driven in your car on a Saturday morning and suddenly notice someone jogging, cycling or singing in your rearview mirror on their way to the gym thinking, “How crazy are they?”…OR thinking: “Man, doesn’t that look awesome?”. Then suddenly the next series of thoughts cross your mind, spoiling your favourite song playing on the radio and

amplifying the well-established driving technics of the taxis… You will never be able to do that, what’s the use? They probably dod nothing for a living to have that much energy, they probably don’t have kids…. Sounds familiar? Well, let’s be honest. Time does not come with a yearly subscription and a pause button, which makes it easy to understand why we would rather spend our time and money on something like that. Yes, the first thought we have when we hear the word “exercise”, is rocking a ripped beach body in a red speedo, drinking a seemingly “heavy soda” as your bicep are bulging when you take sip… Well, maybe not a red speedo, rather blue. (Okay ladies bring your thoughts back from Camp’s Bay and let’s continue!!!). But do we really know THE REAL benefits of

Issue 3 | 2018 | Heritage Hill Estate 25

HH HEALTH ESTATE NEWS & WELLNESS

“Just start!!! The benefits are awesome” exercise are and why it’s SO important…

THE REAL benefits Studies show that in adults exercising x5 per week for 30min at moderate level or 15min at a high intensity can: • Reduce the risk of heart diseases by 40%. • Reduce the risk of stroke and diabetes by 27%. • Reduce the risk of high blood pressure by 50%. • Reduce the risk of recurrent breast cancer by al most 50%. • Reduce the risk of colon cancer by 60%. • Reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s by 35%. • Improve immune system and recovery after surgery by 25%. • Decrease depression as effectively as Prozac or behavioural therapy. In elderly these benefits can be achieved by only doing light to moderate exercises x3 per week. WOW is correct! Everyone has to start somewhere, believe it or not, even Mr & Mrs calves cycling in front of you. One of the biggest problems is starting an exercise

Issue 3 | 2018 | Heritage Hill Estate 26

programme that is not specifically modified to suit your needs, fitness level and time schedule. This can prevent you from reaching your goals, which in turn can demotivate you, make you feel worse and send you buying five chocolate slabs because you already feel so unhealthy and overweight.

✓ In need of a physio and can’t make it during the day? Home visit: done!

Where do I come in… Being a physio and having completed several 10kms, 21km, 60km+100km mountain runs, with a dash of adventure racing and mountain biking on the side, I understand how difficult it can be to start.

Just start!!! The benefits are awesome, not even speaking about the increased energy levels and balanced hormone levels that exercise promotes. You can also be that crazy person enjoying life, singing in some else’s rearview mirror and giving the cold shoulder to our advanced drivers.!!!

BUT… I also know how easy it can be to start, IF you have the right exercise programme modified specifically for you. ✓ Do you prefer exercising at home using the furniture? Done! ✓ Just want to improve your posture, wellbeing and health? Done! ✓ Want to throw around weights in the gym? Done! ✓ In the mood to run your first 10km, 21km trail run? Done! ✓ Doing your first Iron Man? DONE!

Let me assist you in setting up an exercise programme that builds your fitness, ensuring that you reach your goals, injury free…

You deserve it! Sir, your speedo deserves it! Live your FIT life. Be the one in the ‘well-fitting’ jeans. Be the man who can open the jar only using two fingers. Contact details: Eugene Cohn: 072 851 1454 Email: ecorehab.group@gmail.com

Ways to 7 make your home cosier this winter

In Gauteng we are blessed with long summers and mild winters. This is perhaps why most of our homes’ layout and interiors have been planned with this in mind.

leasant as our winters may seem, compared to other parts of the country, three months of chilly mornings and evenings and several cold fronts, will be made worse in cold, draughty living spaces. Here are some tips to make your home look and feel cosier this season:

1} Decorate with warmer tones and textures 2} 3}

Rich, rustic tones like reds, purples, yellows and greys, and metals like brass, bronze and copper can give any room instant warmth. Textures like faux fur, wool and patterns are also important to getting the cosy-factor right. DĂŠcor items such as scatter cushions, woollen throws, wall art, vases or even historic pieces in these tones and textures can help you create the look.

Bring the outdoors in Natural elements like grass, wood and clay contribute tremendously to the atmosphere of any room. Not only do they bring nature into your home but also add warmth.

Add a rug or two, or three A home’s choice of flooring contributes largely to its inside temperatures. With most of our interiors boasting tiles, vinyl, laminated flooring or wood, adding a few furry, soft or warmer-toned rugs will add warmth both literally and figuratively.

4}

Hang curtains

5}

Burn scented candles

Curtains will help to keep the cold out and the heat in. They also offer an instant warmer atmosphere when drawn.

Touch and sight aren’t the only senses that can appreciate the spirit of winter. Smell is an important sense to convince. Burn scented candles like sandalwood etc. to give your house the fragrance of the season. They also provide a beautiful warm glow.

6} Switch to softer lighting 7}

Apart from candles bring in other forms of warmer light by switching globes and adding a few floor lamps.

Make the fireplace a focal point At the end of the day, nothing can transform a home’s cool interiors into a cosy winter haven quite as effectively as a fireplace can. It does the job! Closed combustion ovens are the ideal choice as they generate more heat for longer with less wood than traditional open fireplaces. By making your fireplace a focal point, winter will suddenly become everyone’s favourite season.

SAVVY SELLING Issued by Leapfrog Property Group

Consider this when putting your property on the market Selling your property can be as complex, stressful and emotional as purchasing a property, which is why it’s useful to get professional advice.

You want to ensure that your property fetches the best price, doesn’t sit on the market too long and ultimately doesn’t haunt you with hassles. The right price

It’s important to price the property as accurately as possible because a property that’s either overpriced or underpriced is likely to remain unsold. “The value of a property is determined by what the market is willing to pay, regardless of alterations or improvements made to the house by the seller”, explains Silvana dos reis Marques of Leapfrog Property Group, Pretoria East.

Buyers these days are very informed thanks to information about property prices being readily available on portals like Private Property and Property24. In establishing your asking price familarise yourself with what similar properties in the area are going for and contact a qualified estate agent to assist with this – they’ll do a professional assessment of the property and the area to determine the most favourable price.

Issue 3 | 2018 | Heritage Hill Estate 34

When a potential buyer walks through the door to view the property they need to be able to imagine the space as their own. And there are a number of things the seller can do to encourage this. Things as simple as decluttering and ensuring that the home is neat and clean is essential. “Sellers might not realise this, but it’s also a good idea to de-personalise a home for show days; buyers need to be able to imagine themselves living in the home and family photos and memorabilia can make that more difficult so put the pics and the drawings away for a day,” advises Marques. A reputable estate agent will be able to help and advise you on how to “dress” your home for the occasion.

Work with the best

The property market is a complex business with various legalities and processes that must be adhered to. The easiest way to navigate this when selling your property is to work with a professional – it will save you time, money and stress. “The best way to know whether you’ve got the right agent is to find out whether they know the area – are they on top of the latest property trends, asking prices and the like”, Marques recommends. Ensure the agent you’re using is registered with the Estate Agency Affairs Board (EAAB) and has a current Fidelity Fund Certificate. A well-priced (market related!), neatly presented property that’s marketed by a professional estate agent is sure to sell in a timely fashion at a favourable price, which ensures a happy seller and buyer.

Blankets with by Bronwen Crew

“We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give!” - Winston Churchill. Issue 3 | 2018 | Heritage Hill Estate 37

HH LIFESTYLE & HEALTH

It was a huge privilege to be a part of this year’s Winter Soup & Blanket Drive. This is a highlight on our event calendar and a wonderful opportunity to reach out, give back and bless those in need, as the chill of winter starts to creep in. The residents of Heritage Hill pulled together to donate what they could. New blankets, packets of soup and loaves of bread went to Simon & Linky from Kids

Paradise and Life in Christ Church, based in Olievenhoutbosch. Leendert van der Westhuizen, Production Manager at Pioneer Foods, arranged the generous donation 50 loaves of bread. Used blankets were given to the Centurion SPCA. Driving through the township I was reminded about the privileges and everyday little things that we can so easily take for granted. The children at Kids Paradise were so excited and thrilled to see us. They welcomed us with huge smiles and tight hugs and they chanted the words “borotho, borotho!”

Thank you to each resident that contributed and to the HOA for making these opportunities possible.

Spoilt with a world class array of local and international wine estates that boasted tasters of their flagship wines - it was a wine lovers dream! There was a great buzz amongst guests as they gathered in the Rose Garden on April 20th, greeted by friendly faces and representatives from Estates such as David & Nadia, Eikendal, Ataraxia, Keermont, Newton Johnson, Zevenwacht and Longridge. Tickets were sold out quickly

for Le’ Village Wine Festival and it was another truly wonderful event for the whole family. The children enjoyed their own “Juice Tasting” and colouring in competition while child minders entertained them, allowing parents to mingle and enjoy themselves.

Hats off to Elsa and Heritage Hill HOA for hosting another fabulous family event which residents thoroughly enjoyed. A percentage of the profit from the sale of tickets was donated to Cara Women’s Network, to use for charity and to support the work they do in our community.

A special thank you to Wynand Smit and his team from The Good Oaks, for arranging such a wonderful selection of wines to taste and offering an exclusive home-delivery to Heritage Hill residents.

Thank you to Liesl Gevers and Anne-Marie Neff for looking after the children, to Herman Fourie from Solarlight for providing the lighting and ‘n Pel Van My for entertaining us with two fantastic sets of live music.
