IMMERSE IN
Local Arts 3 Ways to Explore Murray’s Artistic Spirit
Murray Art Guild
For more than 50 years, the MAG has been focused on growing Murray through community arts development. Members have access to two community studios, along with a place for weaving and turning clay. At any given time, up to five local artists can be found working in individual studios located inside in the guild. In addition to community events, weekend workshops and exhibits, the MAG has the Art Market, composed of 30 different local artists displaying artwork for sale. The Art Market is open to visitors, Tuesday through Saturday each week.
Calloway County Barn Quilt Trail
More than 60 barn quilt squares are displayed on barns and large buildings throughout Murray and Calloway County. Spanning miles and miles through the beautiful country side, the Barn Quilt Trail is split up into three areas, creating a scenic drive for visitors. Often, the quilt squares have historical and familial significance. Stop by the Murray CVB office (206 S. 4th St.) and pick up a Barn Quilt Trail Guide including maps, addresses, stories and visuals of the quilts. 14
tourmurray.com
Only have a few hours to explore the trail? Start downtown, where five barn quilts are located in three blocks, on many historic buildings.
Playhouse in the Park
Playhouse in the Park is one of the oldest, continuously running community theatres in the country, beginning its artistic journey in 1977. Currently housed in a historic train depot in Central Park, PIP produces an average of six mainstage productions each year, in addition to several children’s productions from Pail of Tadpoles and Box of Froglets youth programs. Productions range from musicals, like Mamma Mia to more traditional performances, such as Agatha Christie’s: Murder on the Nile. A program that is very special and coveted in the Murray community is the Penguin Project. PIP is one of just a handful of community theatres across the nation that provides special programming for youth with special needs who show interest in music and performing arts. The Penguin Project production is a performance like no other. The energy and strength of the cast is incredibly heartwarming and encouraging.
