CHAIRMAN’S

Letter

I

t is my pleasure to greet and welcome you to Murray and Calloway County, the place I am proud to call my hometown. Whether banking, shopping, eating or entertaining, hospitality and friendliness are key and we are delighted you are here! WELCOME TO MURRAY, where we remain committed to our Award-Winning title, The Friendliest City.

For many years, the Chamber of Commerce has been providing valuable resources and information to prospective community members, new businesses and vendors in the community. The culture in our community is like no other. With a genuine interest in small businesses, local merchants and all things MURRAY, we are continuing to grow at a rapid pace. With access to “Opportunity Afforded,” on the campus of Murray State University and two high performing and distinguished school systems, Murray is a remarkable place to obtain a valuable education, raise a family, retire and relax. Whether you are from this area, or you “arrived as soon as you could,” we are thankful for your interest in our community. We invite you to partake in the many arts and entertainment festivities, boutique and retail shopping experiences, unique dining options and recreational activities we have to offer. Our active and desirable community is constantly being featured and promoted among many publications showcasing our presence on the map from the local Farmer’s Market on the historical Court Square to kayaking on Kentucky Lake and hiking and camping at Land Between the Lakes. The community of Murray is no longer a secret, but rather quickly becoming more of an example of a model community hosting successful events. Most recently the Chamber of Commerce received awards for Outstanding Special Events, Outstanding Publications, and Outstanding Social Media from the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce Executives. Accomplishments are seldom solely due to just a few people, and here in Murray we are fortunate to have a population of professionals and residents who continue to remain interested in creating a greater value in the community keeping us SUSTAINED, POSITIVE and SHARP in all that we do. It is my hope that this town will continue to flourish and develop from the city limit signs to the Calloway County lines. Known by the Company We Keep, on behalf of the Murray and Calloway County Chamber of Commerce staff and Board Members, let me say, “Welcome” to Friday night football, Shop Local Saturdays, the smell of tobacco being fired in a barn on a county road, Playbills from the local theatre cast with actors that you know by name, the Home of the Racers, Murray High Tigers and Calloway County Lakers…Welcome to our front porch. Stay a while and enjoy the view. We’ve been waiting for you.

urray is known as a “college town” with deep traditions to give it character, and enough students to keep it lively and youthful. Agriculture permeates the county and lies at the base of Murray’s wealth and stability, but modern industries and a growing number of small businesses, hotels and restaurants give Murray its prosperous face. The tall buildings and sprawling grounds of the award-winning Murray State University are a sign of the deep community-born tradition of faith in education and devotion to community. The 2010 census reported 17,000 residents, but growth has been so steady, even during economically challenging times, that current estimates put the population nearer to 19,200 for the city that serves as the seat of Calloway County. The County itself is nearing 40,000 and surrounds an industrial center that gives continued hope and promise to this family-oriented town.

HOW’S THE WEATHER OUT THERE? Early settlers found fertile soil with good growing weather — moderate temperatures and rainfall, with a gentle winter. Today, the weather in Murray provides a picturesque backdrop and seasonally appropriate precipitation for any and all activities and social gatherings. Whether you want fog, thunder, snow, rain, shine, or crisp, dry leaves underfoot, you’ll find it at some point during the year. January starts the year with the coldest days (the average high is in the mid-40s) and the greatest chance of snow (4 inches), but rarely enough to close or delay schools. March, April and May can average 70-degree highs, but can fool you with “sweater weather” for morning and evening wear. Murray

enjoys humid summers with average daily highs nearing 90, and plenty of opportunities to cool off on the water in nearby Kentucky Lake. Autumn offers the perfect setting for hiking, campfires and football, and is the favorite time for hunters and many fishermen. August through October is the driest season, but the favorite for many folks. If you’re weather conscious, you won’t be bored, and you’ll seldom be disappointed.

HOW DID THE MKY GET HERE? The community goes back 200 years to the year 1818 — but it wasn’t Murray or Calloway County back then. David Jones and James Stewart began the first settlement, called Willistown, after early settler James Willis. Four years later, the state formed Calloway County from a section of land that originally included Marshall County, and it became the 72nd county in the Commonwealth. The county’s fields proved particularly fertile for growing “Gold Leaf Tobacco.” Tobacco fields dotted the countryside, and eventually, as many as 15 factories processed the crop. The population started to increase with the sale and cultivation of the land.

Willistown itself began as a post office and trading center. Then it changed to Pleasant Springs and by January 17, 1844, the day of the city’s incorporation, citizens had settled upon the simple moniker, “Murray,” in honor of United States Congressman John L. Murray. Less than 20 years after its incorporation, the Civil War ravaged the county. Calloway County remained neutral—at least officially. Men from the county volunteered for both Federal and Confederate units. General Lew Wallace marched through Murray on the way to the historic fights at Fort Heiman, Fort Henry and Fort Donelson. The Civil War was a harsh time for both soldiers and civilians, but Union and Confederate forces fought no battles within the Calloway area. Schools played an important part in the County’s history. For a time in the 1800s and early 1900s, there was a “high school” in Hazel, Kentucky, on the countries southern border with Tennessee. Students took the train from northern parts of the county and boarded in local homes until the weekend. In the early 20th century, a teacher ’s preparatory school sprang up in Kirksey, a small community in the northwest corner of Calloway. Although it lasted a short time, it signaled again the community’s devotion to the promise of education

After the turn of the century Murray’s fortune turned especially bright. The year 1922 saw the establishment of Murray State University. The university began as the Murray State Normal School and owes its existence to a man named Rainey T. Wells. Wells lobbied the Normal School Commission to choose Murray as the site for a new institution, and he eventually became the second president of the university after John Wesley Carr. Since Murray State’s establishment, the city itself has changed to reflect its status as a college town. Bookstores dot the shopping areas and a few restaurants stay open late, catering to midnight studiers.

WHAT MAKES MURRAY SPECIAL? Today, the school possesses a student body of more than 10,000 and holds a prestigious place in the academic world. U.S. News has placed the university on its list of best colleges for 25 years, and the 2018 rankings rate Murray State among the top 10 public schools in the South. But the University is not the only thing that’s special.

Murray is known as a

Lively & Youthful.

Branching out from the university’s red brick buildings, the city of Murray has thrived. The farming communities that first populated the area still exist along with shopping centers, restaurants, beautiful parks and top-rated grade schools. Murray has been recognized as one of the 100 Best Communities for Young People and as a Playful City, USA. Calloway County has long since passed its days as an agrarian community and Murray has grown into much more than a post office and a trading center. It’s the people, they say, who make this place special. A number of authorities have given Murray-Kentucky Lakes area the designation as “The Retirement Capital of the United States,” the “Friendliest Small City in America,” and the fastest-growing community in the Commonwealth. The neighborliness of a small town has not been bred out of the community by success and notoriety. It is safe, stable and smiling — and willing to share its friendly atmosphere and boundless future. 

N THE GOOD, LONG

Life IN THE

MKY 12

Murray-Calloway County Chamber of Commerce • 2019 Viewbook

o surprise here: Murray and Calloway County are growing at a pace that is getting attention across the State. The relaxed pace of this suburban community may contribute the attraction, as will the reasonably-priced housing opportunities and the abundance of outdoor activities available. It might be the energy provided by thousands of college students, or the quality of the two award-winning school systems. It might be more; much, much more. Rand-McNally “discovered” Murray in the 1990s when it designated the “Murray-Kentucky Lakes Area” as the top retirement spot in the United States because of its laid-back lifestyle and low cost of living. Things didn’t change after the turn of the century as Retire magazine, in a 2007 cover story, called Murray town as a “low-cost haven.” Within a year, Back Home in Kentucky magazine dubbed Murray one of the top retirement communities in the state already known for retirement opportunities.

THE GOOD LIFE Murray and Calloway County might be laid-back and low-cost, but let’s not forget the fun. Murray is a ten-time Playful City USA community, making it a perfect place to live for families as well as retirees. Murray State University has been designated a “Safe Campus” and the community was designated as the “Friendliest Small Town in America” in a nation-wide survey. However, there’s more to life than economics and leisure. Take a look a the Quality of Life Index. When people are asked about what’s really important to them, and when the

western suburbs, offer something for everyone. As a result home sales and construction have been fairly stable over the last decade. Retirees find respite from urban congestion in the city; parents buy their college-aged children homes near Murray State and families move in for job opportunities — and for the chance to raise their children in a quiet town with outstanding educational facilities.

ESTIMATED HOME SALE PRICE - $154,530 AVERAGE HOUSEHOLD SIZE – 2.35 * POPULATION DENSITY – 135 PER SQUARE MILE MEDIAN TRAVEL TIME TO WORK – 14 MINUTES * Murray’s university student population tends to drive down the household average, as do a large number of retirees who are “empty nesters.”

Cancer CENTER

More than ever before, there is now In 2018, hospital CEO Jerry Penner told the Chamber Business @ Breakfast that the MCCH community was focusing its efforts on improvements to the Cancer Center. More than ever before, there is now more hope for victims of cancers of all kinds. MCCH and the Endowment for Health are bringing together the necessary resources for more equipment, more personnel, better diagnostics and treatment. “We’ve got to do this,” said Mr. Penner, “and we will.”

A LIFE OF HEALTH AND ACTIVITY Did you notice the index number of “Mortality?” 137 — people seem to live longer here. Maybe it’s the fresh air and the absence of crowding and pollution. Maybe it’s the abundance

of healthy exercise opportunities, and the availability of fresh foods right off the farm. From the Saturday Farmer’s Market to the local grocery stores who offer fresh, organic foods at affordable prices, there’s no reason you cannot eat and exercise your way to health. Just in case, however, the region also includes a surprisingly broad, remarkably skilled health care system. Aggressively maintained by local devotion to community ownership and responsibility, the health care professionals of the region are distinguished by their availability and world-class skills. The Murray-Calloway County Hospital is actually a network of general practice and specialties supported by related facilities like a skilled nursing facility, a hospice house, a cancer treatment center, and a large campus of surgical, laboratory and diagnostic facilities that rival medical establishments in much larger cities. Murray health care facilities are among the most accredited in Kentucky and in 2017, Murray Orthopeadics was named among the top 10% in the nation. Hard to beat! Supplementing the Hospital organization are the Primary Care Medical Center, a private multi-specialty clinic, and an abundance of specialists and practitioners. The medical community includes private practices in dentistry, chiropractic, counseling and psychology, and physical therapy. All of this health care capacity means that Murrayans can skip the long road trip to larger nearby metropolitan areas without risking the quality of care. The Murray-Calloway County hospital is a community hospital. That is, the needs of the community come first; profitability is not a defining issue. To support quality healthcare for all citizens, The Endowment for Health was

created to raise funds through contributions and events. Endowment funds help to provide state-of-the-art technology and practices which might be unaffordable without higher health care prices — or higher taxes. Good care is also provided through the hard work of the Angel’s Clinic and Angel’s Attic. The “Attic,” a thrift shop supported with donations of clothing, furniture and other items, and staffed with volunteers and employees, helps to fund the Clinic. Volunteer nurses and physicians help staff the Clinic, ensuring that financial distress will not interfere with good health in Murray. By any measure, Murray looks like a great place to live and a great place to stay healthy. And, by any measure, it is just that. Whether you visit, reside or relocate, you’re home. 

arly settlers in Calloway County knew that knowledge saved lives and promoted progress. Just after the Civil War the first public high school was built near the center of Murray. In the early 1900s, Calloway County had a public/private school in Hazel to which students would commute by train from the northern parts of the county, and board with families in Hazel until the week was over. In Kirksey, there was a Normal School for teachers for a time before WWI, until economic downturn drove it out of business — just in time for Rainey T. Wells’ successful effort to establish a college in Murray. Today, education in Murray and Calloway County constitutes a powerful economic force. The acclaimed quality and achievements of schools at all levels ensure employers and entrepreneurs of a skilled workforce and an on-going source of continuing education.

PUBLIC SCHOOLS

CALLOWAY COUNTY SCHOOLS The Calloway County School System provides children with excellent educations to prepare them for work in the modern world. The system includes three elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. Students can choose from a variety of extra-curricular academic and athletic programs while utilizing the school system’s library/media centers and gymnasiums. Calloway County schools employ roughly 500 faculty members and staff that serve approximately 3,200 children. The District spends more than $8,800 per student. Four Family Resource Centers serve residents within the district, seeking to identify the unmet needs of students and families and mobilizing all available assets to meet them.

MURRAY INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS The Murray Independent School System dates back to 1872, when a group of citizens built the first Murray High School in the center of town. Today, that one school has evolved into a small system of three institutions comprised of elementary, middle and high schools. The surrounding community remains as education-minded as ever, and each school features a parent-teacher organization and a booster club for band and athletics. The system also has an active school-business partnership program. Through these organizations, more than 1,000 parents and community members contribute their time and energies to the education of Murray children. The district also offers children and parents an online portal for quick access to grading, assignment and attendance information so entire families can stay involved in the learning process.

In addition, this school system, small as it may be, has won several awards. For twenty years, Murray Independent Schools

In January 2012, these efforts earned the Calloway County Board of Education the Advancing Student Achievement to Proficiency award from the Kentucky School Board Association. The KSBA bestows the honor upon school boards that have met 10 individual standards for advancing child accomplishment including development of a monthly agenda that focuses on student achievement and adherence to that agenda.

have won the national “What Parents Want” award, an honor bestowed upon only 16 percent of the nations 15,571 public school districts. It is also one of 18 districts in the state recognized as an “Outperforming School District” by the world’s foremost provider of statistics, Standard & Poor’s. The students themselves have also earned distinguished honors. It was selected as a Third Place Finalist in ACT’S 2013 College and Career Readiness Campaign, and since 1974, 37 National Merit Finalists have graduated from the Murray Independent School System. Since 2012 when the award began, it has been a Kentucky District of Distinction.

PRIVATE SCHOOLS Eastwood Christian Academy has served children in Murray, Ky., since 1978 with the purpose of giving students the highest possible education while simultaneously training them spiritually. The school models this purpose after the development of Jesus described in Luke 2:52, “And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God.”

A member of the American Association of Christian Schools, Eastwood Christian Academy features a half-day kindergarten program along with an elementary and high school that teach 1st through 12th grades. Enrolled students learn to see the world through a Christ-centered point of view, experiencing Bible study, chapels, strong academics, good discipline, Christian friends and protection against negative influences. In addition, they also have access to assets comparable to those in public schools, such as a library, a science lab and a computer lab. As for creative expression, every spring, children have the chance to participate in the All School Program, an event designed to showcase student talents including singing, recitation and acting. Through its spiritually-minded educational practices, the Eastwood Academy has achieved excellent results. Every year, the school administers the Stanford Achievement Tests and students consistently score in the top 20th percentile nationally. When compared with other Christian schools, the academy’s well-trained attendees score in the top percentile.

Murray State is ranked among the top 10 public universities and among the top 25 public and private universities in the South. In addition to further recognition by both G.I. Magazine and The Chronicle of Higher Education, the university has made the Forbes Top College List for years. With this collection of top rankings to back its reputation, Murray State gives local, out-of-state and international students the chance to seek quality higher education at an affordable price. Forbes also designated the university as one of “America’s 100 Best College Buys.” The campus has been designated a “Safe Campus” and a “Veteran Friendly” university. Combine all those recognitions with the strong partnership between campus and community, and it’s easier to see why students and families select MSU as a place to launch a new career or a new beginning.

LEARNING IS ALL AROUND US For over a century continuous learning has found a home at the Calloway County Library. Traditional resources, such as books, magazines, newspapers and local historical collections have been there from the beginning, but times change. Today the Library, located at 710 Main Street, features an array of public access computers where young people and adults can learn computer skills and join the “wired world” mymurray.com • Murray-Calloway County Chamber of Commerce

— as well as at the wireless. Recorded books and video recordings of films and educational materials are available. Perhaps most important, the Library is an important resource for groups who wish to gather to promote civic or educational endeavors. The public space is open to arts and literature groups, and to public meetings of all kinds. The first production of Murray’s Playhouse in the Park took place in the meeting room more than four decades ago. More recently, the Library has presented such programs as folk story telling, and an annuls group reading of a Christmas season favorite. After school programs and quilting sessions use the Library, which provides easy access and is close to Murray Middle School on Main Street. You don’t have to go far beyond the city limits — or the county boundaries — to find new experiences that enrich and inform. The U.S. Forest Service’s Land Between the Lakes — known locally as “LBL” — offers a state-of-theart planetarium, a nature station, the nationally-known Elk and Bison Prairie, and a recreated family farm of the 1850s where visitors can learn history and witness a farm family spinning wool, plowing with oxen, and harvesting crops from tobacco to corn to flax.

Calloway County is home to the first fort to fall to Union forces in the winter campaign that made Gen. Ulysses Grant famous. Calloway’s Fort Heiman, now on the bank of Kentucky Lake, was followed by Fort Henry and Fort Donelson in an historic set of actions that changed the course of history. You can walk the grounds and learn of events that took place only a short drive from downtown Murray. Like the early settlers, modern Calloway Countians are devoted to the power of learning. Education goes well beyond the schools and right into your own backyard. That’s life and learning in the MKY. 

A

Horse’s

TALE

Murray State athletics has countless traditions and several special organizations that set MSU apart. However, there is one figure at the center of it all when it comes to Racers sports: the one and only “Dunker.” Murray State football features an actual horse, Racer One, which circles the field whenever the Racers score a touchdown. But then there is the well-known horse mascot, Dunker, who is a prominent figure in Racer athletics, parades and public events. Dunker has seen many changes in appearance since its debut in the 1980’s. The long-necked, fluffy comic has turned into a sturdy stud who sometimes looks like a super hero. For any Racer fans — especially the youngsters — Dunker and his human persona is just that: a hero. The role of Dunker is a year-long scholarship position, and appears at the majority of the sporting events for the Racers. The student who takes on the role of dunker goes through a try-out process before beginning a role as part of a rich tradition. It takes stamina, agility and creativity to entertain and inspire from the inside of a horse suit. It takes modesty, too, for the identity of “Dunker” is a well-kept secret. That secrecy is part of the Dunker tradition. Dunker is not only at the forefront of fan entertainment at Murray State: the horse has proved it is one of the best mascots in the Ohio Valley Conference. Dunker has won the OVC mascot challenge (begun in 2012) four times, winning in 2013 and winning three years in a row starting in 2015. However, Dunker’s ability to hype up Racer nation isn’t the only reason why he is the best mascot in the OVC. Dunker makes visits to Junior Racer events, local elementary schools, birthday parties, and summer orientations at Murray State. You will certainly see him at the annual Homecoming Parade, and often at Murray’s Christmas Parade — the traditional kick off for holiday shopping and celebrations for the whole community. While we may not know the true identity of Dunker’s human counterpart, we know that Dunker’s presence in Racer Athletics is something all fans — young and old — enjoy. The Old Grey Mare may not be what she used to be, but Dunker just gets better and better.

everal entertainment venues around Murray and Calloway County provide residents with fabulous ways to unwind and get excited at the same time. Murray State University has an excellent drama program, with two main stages and an intimate, black box theatre space. Every season, the department produces an array of comedy and drama from a professionally directed company of talented students. Deadwood’s W. Earl Brown and Radio City’s Charles Edward Hall are graduates of the program, as is Days of Our Lives’ Chrishell Hartley. If film is your cup of artistic tea, the seven screens at Murray’s Cheri Theatre bring the best of Hollywood to Chestnut Street. Tickets can be purchased online for convenience. Film also gets the stage at Murray State’s Curris Center Theatre when the Cinema International program screens films from around the world and from across the spectrum of entertainment — for free. Those interested in the visual arts have their choice of four local galleries in which to peruse fine painting, sculpture and photography. Fiction and poetry readings are often hosted here. The Clara M. Eagle Art Gallery and the Curris Center Art Gallery offer art appreciation opportunities on Murray State’s campus, and Gallery 109 & Fairbanks Studio and the Murray Art Guild have facilities in the city. Gallery 121, located at 8332 State Route 121 (south), exhibits the porcelain works of internationally-exhibited artist Wayne Bates. A number of crafters and artists maintain studios for works in clay, wood and graphic arts in and around Murray and, if you’re interested, you have only to ask. Murray State also offers a seemingly-endless array of musical entertainment from its renowned Racer Band on the field at half-time in Stewart Stadium to virtuoso performances in

the Performing Arts Hall or Lovett Auditorium on campus. Students culminate their years of training with senior recitals that dot the calendar regularly, and faculty recitals showcase remarkable abilities. Turns out “those who teach can do.” Faculty, professionals and talented amateurs provide music in a number of other venues. Restaurants regularly feature musical talent on weekends, and Murray has produced a number of well-known musical artists such as folk virtuoso Chris Thile of Nickel Creek, now host of NPRs Live Fom Here, and songwriter Alex Harvey, among many, many others. Concerts also take the stage at the CFSB Center on the northern end of the campus where town meets gown. James Taylor, Bob Dylan and Jeff Dunham have joined artists sharing country, pop, classical and big band in the same venue that features MSU’s well recognized men’s and women’s basketball teams.

Nearby Paducah, Kentucky, presents an outstanding array of entertainment as well. In less than an hour, four-lane travel brings you to their renowned Paducah Symphony, and one of Kentucky’s most distinguished community theaters. The Market House Theatre lies at the heart of a dining and shopping district that is well worth the experience. It is adjacent to Paducah’s Carson Center for the Arts: a nationally recognized venue for national music and theatre tours. And, speaking of theaters, we would be remiss if we did not remind you of Murray’s own Playhouse in the Park, now in its 42nd year of entertaining people in its historic 100 yearold building. Since 1977, Playhouse in the Park has offered entertainment for the whole family and training for some now-well known theatrical performers. It has been an asset for the community in more ways than one, having once featured performances by Hollywood pros W. Earl Brown, Leigh-Allyn Baker and Daniel Van Thomas.

PARK Playhouse has a regular season of six shows with dramas, comedies and musicals such as Spamalot, Sweeney Todd, and this year’s production of Mama Mia. For edgier productions there is Playhouse After Dark, featuring adults only shows such as Avenue Q, Rent and Next to Normal. A very special event is the Penguin Project show each year. The Penguin Project is cast with special needs children who fill all of the principal roles. Each child has a mentor who is usually of the same sex and age as the actor. The mentor’s role is to be at the side of the actor to help them with lines, props and positioning while remaining in the background as much as possible. Playhouse was among the first community theaters in the country to present a Penguin Project. There are now more than 25 communities that have added Penguins to their playbills. Lisa Cope, the general manager and only paid employee, is a great believer in the benefits of theatre education. There are now four levels of opportunity for young people to learn theatre; Whirl – for preschoolers, Pail of Tadpoles – for 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders, Basket of Froglets – 6th and 7th graders and Box of Frogs – 8th through 12th grade. Additionally, there is a two week summer camp for youngsters from 6 to 12 where they learn a show, rehearse and stage it. Some of the people you might know who have taken part in Playhouse productions before they made it big are; W. Earl Brown (There’s Something about Mary – Deadwood), Olivia Faye (Movies – Hello Herman/ Un SI Joli Mensonge - Singer/ Songwriter), Kaci Bolls (Singer/songwriter). There are a raft of others who have gone on and worked in the entertainment industry all over the world. “I’m constantly amazed by two things,” says Lisa Cope. “One is how well the community does support this theatre. They come to the shows, they support the actors, they support any kind of program that we try to do. . . .The other thing is the amount of talent that’s out there in this area. We’re just blown away, time and time again.” All you have to do is get up and get out to treat your ears, your eyes and your passion with the entertainments that abound in the Friendliest Town in America. No wonder people are so friendly: this place is fun! 

I

f you want to do business, start a business, or be where business is taking place, then you’re looking for Murray and Calloway County. You’ll find yourself . . . SMACKDAB IN THE MIDDLE OF EVERYTHING.

If you look at the map or “the numbers,” you might get the impression that Murray is “out of the way,” or somehow remote from what matters to modern American business.

DOING

Murray is actually near the center of America’s population — just 200 miles east of the exact center of population for the United States. The fact that the center seems to be moving steadily south means that Murray is in a good position to grow. Getting there is becoming easier and easier.

IN THE

Local people can also travel from the area by air, land and water. The Murray-Calloway County Airport facilitates excellent air travel for private planes and air freight, boasting one of the longest runways in Kentucky among airports of its size. The 6,200-foot runway is more than ample for most traffic and offers a variety of fuels for different engine types.

Paducah’s Barkley Regional Airport opens the whole world with connections to Chicago’s O’Hare and Nashville International provides connections to destinations worldwide. Barkley has been steadily adding routes which now allow business travelers to reach St. Louis and Chicago in minutes rather than hours. Freight is carried by the KWT Railway, running from a depot near Murray to Bruceton, Tenn. In addition, the Port of Murray lies about 15 miles northeast of the city and allows companies to ship cargo up and down the Tennessee River. From the Tennessee (Kentucky Lake) freight can link with

the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway — a shortcut to Port of Mobile on the Gulf of Mexico. In 2012 the area’s transportation system suffered a disaster covered by news outlets worldwide. On January 26, a cargo ship named the “Delta Mariner” collided with the bridge spanning US Highway 68/KY 80. The bridge partially collapsed, affecting surrounding businesses as well as traffic flow. Thankfully, no one was injured. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet worked quickly to correct the damage and return traffic to normal. Then, over a three-year period, the damaged bridge was replaced by a modern four-lane structure providing even better access to Murray from the east and affording easy access to the Land Between the Lakes for Calloway’s residents and visitors. The final stretches of US 80 linking the Lakes with Hopkinsville, Ky., to the east, are progressing toward completion as we go to press.

So, regardless of where you’re headed, you can start your trip with confidence in Murray. Don’t worry; it’s just as easy to get home.

LET’S DO BUSINESS In 1926, the impact of the new “Murray Normal School” — the beginning of Murray State University — was already being felt. Business men and women decided that they needed an organization to circulate information to new business owners, and to help chart a path for economic growth. For more than

The four lanes of panoramic US 80 already connect Murray quickly and conveniently to the Lakes region in the east, and with The Purchase Parkway in the west. As Highway 641 expands to the south, the city finds itself within easy reach of a major north-south Interstate in I-24, and a northeastsouthwest artery in the coming I-69. In late 2018 Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell announced a Federal grant to complete planning and construction for four lanes of Highway 641 to the south. This new route, already heading north from Paris, Tenn., will complete the heavy freight capacity of the city while maintaining its freedom from the heavy congestion often associated with ready access to high speed surface traffic. From Murray State to the “Antique Capital of the World” in Hazel, visitors and residents will find easy access to everything they seek. All these changes are being brought about with an eye — and an ear — to keeping the country’s friendliest small city a safe, livable environment. The quiet, congenial nature of Murray belies the ease with which the whole world can be reached. mymurray.com • Murray-Calloway County Chamber of Commerce

90 years they have been doing all those things a more — and doing them well. Today, the Chamber of Commerce continues to promote economic prosperity by “partnering with its members to provide representation, increase job opportunities, encourage community pride and improve the quality of life.” The Chamber keeps a finger on the pulse of local business with regular surveys of opinion and releases of information from government, education and industry leaders about changes in the business climate. The Chamber also organizes a political voice for the local business community where appropriate. When a demand is discovered among business owners and managers, the Chamber offers seminars on such topics as new regulation, management and promotional strategies and training programs for employees. The Chamber is often the gateway to the city, serving the information needs of newcomers and prospective residents who seek to know more about living and working in the area. Other professional, governmental and business organizations also support the growth of business in the region Murray’s Main Street program and the Convention and Visitors Bureau are active in supporting such activities as the annual Freedom Fest Fourth of July celebration and the seasonal Downtown Farmers’ Market. One of the oldest associations of business people in America, the Rotary, has one of its most active clubs in Murray. Improvements to the City-County park system, public events and an intense support of public health and public education are a priority with service clubs throughout the city.

Chamber members can benefit from planned advertising through the Chamber Web site, mymurray.com, which features scrolling and stationary ads. In addition, the Chamber hosts networking events for members such as the Annual Dinner and the monthly Business @ Breakfast event which also provides a forum for vital business information from local, state and national leaders.

The Young Professionals of Murray is a powerful example of how business organizations can support the education and interaction of the leaders of tomorrow. The Chamber works with Leadership Murray to add additional opportunities for business, industry and government leaders to better understand the community: its needs, resources and potential. All these programs augment — and are enhanced by — the great work of one of the best business schools in the nation at Murray State University. Over the last three years, Murray city government with the leadership of Mayor Jack Rose undertook an overhaul in the way the City works with business. In a long reorganization campaign, local government was streamlined and simplified to encourage business startups by making things easier and more understandable. The commitment to business from both City and County governments runs deep. At the Murray-Calloway County Chamber of Commerce “our business is business itself.” When business succeeds, the community grows.

GROWING LIKE EVERYBODY’S BUSINESS You can’t make your first visit to Murray without being aware of its University. Drive in from the north and you can’t miss the CFSB Center and Stewart Stadium. From the west, you’ll pass acres of the University farm. You don’t need the welcome signs and the mileage markers to know that education is a major economic factor in Murray. That’s been true for more than a century.

shoppers from miles around. There’s construction activity everywhere: In 2018, new businesses opened every week, and the Chamber of Commerce had to order its ribbon by the truckload. And, even if you’re just here for a great summer getaway, you cannot miss the large facilities and industrial parks located just off the highways. There you will find the fabricators and manufacturers. Companies such as Briggs & Stratton, Vanderbilt Chemical, Kenlake Foods and Saputo Dairy Foods USA have long-established factories in the area and make a variety of products from small engines to food products. Paschall Truck Lines (PTL) makes it headquarters in Murray. The Murray-Calloway Economic Development Corporation leads the effort to improve the industrial environment and to recruit the “best of the best” to be part of the community. In recent years established firms have been joined by Pella Windows, iwis Engine Systems, DAE-IL, Sportable Scoreboards and Numeritex as the community’s affordable business environment has been recognized around the world. A solid and growing broadband infrastructure, developing industrial sites and increasing ease of transportation continues to attract forward-looking organizations. The stability of these facilities makes Murray’s manufacturing community a special one. Combine vigorous industries with the necessary support businesses such as transportation,

However, while Murray may be a “college town,” there’s much more than education in its industrial base. Small businesses thrive throughout the town and the county. You’ll see familiar chain retail stores right next to unique local shops and the signature boutiques that bring

warehousing, equipment suppliers and tool and die specialists, and you have a significant set of employers; businesses that contribute as much to social and commercial activity as they do to tax bases and the economy. When the national economy suffered in the first decade of the Millennium and companies were closing around the world, very few jobs were lost here. In fact, there was modest growth.

Authorities have attributed this happy fact, in large measure, to the quality of the workforce. People in this part of the country are used to hard work and prides themselves on dependability. The lower cost of living also reduces the financial strain on employers, so jobs stay put in Murray when other locations become financial liabilities to corporations. For nearly 100 years MSU has pumped highly skilled, motivated and trained business leaders and specialists into the region’s growing economy. Even when the Murray workforce leaves town it attracts attention. In 2017 advertising agencies in New York and Chicago noticed the difference when Murray State students were placed in summer internship programs there. Supervisors and Human Resources directors began to ask, “What’s in the water in Murray?” The answer was simple: Murray State students showed up on time, worked until the job was done, did the work at or above expected levels and did it on time. When bad economic news rampaged over the nation, Murray and Calloway County boasted low unemployment rates to complement to low crime rates, low housing costs and low tax rates. The “MKY” grew at one of the highest rates in Kentucky and was recognized as perhaps the fastest growing economy for any city of its size.

Murray’s location also plays an important role in its desirability to manufacturers. Just a day’s drive from business and transportation centers like Nashville, Louisville, St. Louis and Memphis, Murray is in the right place. The variety of industrial concerns is further evidence that large manufactures made the right choice. Benjamin Franklin was right: “The best way to tell the future is by reading the past.” The past and the present show Murray’s economic growth is in good hands and in a very good place. Families who depend on local industry for their health and prosperity may expect to thrive. 

TIPS FOR Renters 1. Visit the Murray-Calloway County Chamber of Commerce for a rent list, which includes a complete listing of rental properties available for only $3. Rent list can be purchased online at www.mymurray.com. 2. When touring the apartment, pay close attention to details. Make sure all appliances work and check for the amenities most important to you, items like closet space or a garbage disposal. 3. Pay attention to extra costs separate from the rent. Are any utilities included? Is there a security deposit? Is the place furnished with a washer and dryer? Be sure to budget for deposits on water and electricity as well.

4. Be prepared to provide the landlord with references or to allow him or her to check your credit report. This is not a frequent request, but some home/apartment owners require it. 5. Contact other tenants who have the same landlord to find out how timely repairs are made. 6. If you don’t understand the lease, consult a real estate agent before signing it. Pay close attention to the details of the contract for items like pet allowances, who is responsible for repairs, and the duration of the lease. 7. ALWAYS purchase renter’s insurance. Do not assume that the landlord’s insurance policy will cover your belongings in the event of a fire or other occurrence.
