Historic downtown
Downtown Murray used to be a place to trade livestock or goods,
buy groceries, see the doctor, board a bus, sell tobacco crops, get a prescription filled or see a movie. Although times have changed, downtown is still as vibrant as ever. The court square is home to a unique variety of retail shops, restaurants and events. Rudy’s, on the square, is open for breakfast and lunch featuring good, home-style Southern cooking. It offers a made-from-scratch breakfast each morning and plate lunches every day. Chicago-style cuisine can be found at Mugsy’s Hideout, with specialties such as deepdish pizza, Italian sausage sandwiches and toasted cheese ravioli. How does downtown Murray maintain its charm? Murray Main Street, an organization working to preserve and strengthen the area, continually works to revitalize downtown through renovation projects. The organization also organizes a variety of community events and activities on the court square that allow community members and visitors to experience downtown at its finest.

The Easter Bunny makes an appearance as 5,000 Easter eggs are hunted on the grounds. The Downtown Saturday Market fills the court square with fruits, veggies, pies, treats, flowers, arts, crafts and other products every Saturday (7 am - noon) during the months of May through October. Main Street Merriment brings warmth and holiday cheer, and spreads it throughout the downtown area. This event takes place the first Friday in December and is a great way to kick-off the Christmas season. First, visit Santa on the courthouse lawn while watching the lighting of the community tree. Then, browse one of the many downtown businesses that stay open late that evening. The Robert O. Miller Conference Center hosts music, food, hot chocolate and beautiful Christmas decor. The American Society of Golf Architects designated the Frances E. Miller Memorial Golf Course as one of the best designed 18-hole courses in America. It presents a unique challenge for competitive and recreational golfers alike. Measuring 6,592 yards from the championship tees, the par-71 layout has two distinct nines which require a wide array of shot-making. The outward nine is set on hilly terrain and requires pinpoint accuracy from tee to green, whereas the inward half rewards length and accurate long-iron play. The facility also offers two large practice putting greens, as well as a wide two-level practice tee and a spacious 315-yard driving range. The Arboretum at Murray State University is a fully accessible horticultural display, public garden and educational lab located on the Pullen Farm of Murray State University. The Arboretum consists of five major parts: Open Woodlands, Savanna, Open Prairie, Oak/Hickory Forest and Wetlands, plus Display and Community Gardens. Walk the two miles of pathways and experience one of the largest and most diverse collection of plants in western Kentucky. Throughout the arboretum you will find collections of both introduced and local woody plants, annuals and perennials of historic significance to the western Kentucky region. friendliest small town
very Murray local knows people who say, “I left after college, but I just had to come back. Something was pulling at me.” That something goes beyond MSU Racer pride. That “something” is deeply rooted in the people of this area. That something is Murray’s friendliness. In the summer of 2012, Murray learned the city had been named “Friendliest Small Town in America” in the Best of the Road competition. The Murray Convention and Visitors Bureau had taken the lead in responding to questions and hosting the team that made the final evaluation of the six finalist cities. The Murray CVB would be the first to point out that any number of organizations, officials and “just plain folks” joined in the effort to show the nation what makes Murray special. Having less than twenty-four hours warning, the Murray CVB was set on the fast-track to make a successful site visit for Rand McNally and USA Today. In a matter of hours, word spread through town of a community picnic set in the park for a “Welcome to Murray” celebration. The CVB staff organized the last-minute party, community members willingly changed their weekend plans, made phone calls spreading the word and arrived in style with pot-lock dishes of southern specialties. No questions were asked; people just did what was needed to pull together and succeed. As the Best of the Road team drove toward the Playhouse in the Park pavilion, community members were lined-up across the large deck. Waving and smiling to the team, the Murray people were genuinely displaying the special character of the community. Everyone was eating, sharing and laughing together in the natural way Murray does. No strangers are found in Murray. Even the Best of the Road team was treated like family from the moment they arrived.

Jokes and laughter filled the patio as children played and enjoyed the summer evening. Rand McNally and USA Today awarded the “2012 Friendliest Small Town in America” to Murray, Kentucky. Being the “Friendliest” town is something that comes naturally to the small university community. Consisting of a large retirement and family population mixed with university students, Murray provides a unique variety of customs and cultures nestled next to Kentucky Lake, offering sweet, southern charm. It is the small things making Murray friendly. A card or a hug offered in honest faith, rooted in the foundation of the community, creates the something: the unending compassion and love offering a life full of joy. The something lives deep in the people, making everyday worthy and special. It is the kind words, simple smiles and easy gestures that make even a stranger feel at home.

Relocation and Retirement Murray has long been known for its attractiveness to retirees. In 2008, the city was recognized by Back Home in Kentucky magazine as one of the Top Retirement Communities in Kentucky. In 2001, Murray was selected as one of only eight cities in the state as a Certified Retirement Community by the Kentucky Tourism Development Cabinet. Nationally, Where to Retire magazine featured Murray in a cover story in 2007, naming it a “low-cost haven.” RetirementAmerica.com also rated Murray highly, saying, “If you are seeking a well-rounded community with plenty of outdoor recreation, low housing costs with a four season climate, then Murray may be just what you’re looking for.” Of course, who wouldn’t want to live in the Friendliest Small Town in America? Murray’s medical facilities work hard to keep residents safe. More than 70 physicians representing 28 medical specialties are practicing at Murray-Calloway County Hospital. In 2010, the hospital opened its new South Tower, a 158,000 square foot modern facility built to provide health care services for the region for years to come. Murray was named one of the 100 Best Communities for Young People for the fourth time. According to the America’s Promise website, the community has continuously made the list because of its “emphasis on strengthening families and improving outcomes for children and youth by identifying needs, opportunities and priorities for future action; promoting effective city and school collaboration; encouraging and supporting youth voice, engagement and leadership; and measuring progress over time.”
