Our Area’s Climate
Fair Weather, Friends
R
esidents of Murray and Calloway County experience four distinct seasons, a fact that allows them to enjoy a wide range of activities throughout the year.
Weather varies greatly throughout the spring and fall. For example in April, temperatures may be mild enough to walk outside during one week, and during the next, they can grow chilly enough to sip cocoa by a fire. Murray typically experiences warm, humid summers with temperatures averaging as high as 90 and 89 degrees in July and August.
During the winter months, temperatures can sink, but not drastically. They dip as low as a 27-degree average in January, and the county receives an average of nine inches of snow per year. This allows children to enjoy some sledding, but not so much that they grow tired of snow and ice.
Precipitation averages dip as low as 3.5 inches during these months, whereas they rise as high as 5.4 inches in May and November. v

Downtown
The Heart of Murray
W
hen walking through downtown Murray, take a moment to close your eyes and think of all of the people who have stood there before you. The downtown area is rich with history; it was the first thriving area in Murray and has been bustling since 1913. A location that used to feature horse and buggies, an opera house, hotels and soda fountains is now where citizens and visitors come to eat, shop and have fun. The court square and surrounding blocks are filled with stores and restaurants only found in Murray. The retail shops of downtown are all locally owned with a vast selection of items including home decor, books, handmade furnishings, collectibles, clothing and more. Between the shopping, art and restaurants, it is easy to spend all day browsing the area. Downtown is also the site for many fun events throughout the year. Every Saturday morning during the months of May through October the square is lined with vendors selling in-season vegetables, fresh fruit, meats and handmade items at the Downtown Saturday Market. Freedom Fest, an Independence Day festival, is held downtown during the last weekend in June. It includes two days of free concerts, a street fair, parade, fireworks and kids’ activities. The Ice Cream Festival is the first weekend of September. What could be better than free ice cream? Purity Ice Cream serves up countless combinations of its unique flavors to the public at no
cost. In addition, there are inflatables, music and many other activities to keep the family busy during this two-day festival. As the year winds down and cold weather approaches, Main Street Merriment consumes the court square. This event consists of the lighting of the community Christmas tree, live music on the courthouse lawn, performances from the local theater group, pony rides, food, and an alley elaborately decorated with lights and filled with actors in 17thCentury London costumes. These events combined with the everyday offerings of downtown make it a wonderful place to live, work or play. v

Friendliest Small Town
Top Honors
O
n a hot June weekend, two visitors were introduced to Murray, Kentucky, and quickly discovered what makes it the Friendliest Small Town in America. The team from Rand McNally and USA Today were visiting the first of six towns on their journey to determine which would be crowned the winner in the Best of the Road competition. The journey began in May 2012 when online voting for the annual Best of the Road contest commenced. Small towns across America could be nominated for an award in one of five categories: Friendliest, Most Fun, Best for Food, Most Beautiful and Most Patriotic. Erin Carrico, executive director of the Murray Convention and Visitors Bureau, knew that Murray would be shoe-in for Friendliest. "It's no secret that this community is friendly and has a special way of making visitors and residents feel at home," she said. So, the CVB launched a campaign to get locals, former residents and those who love Murray to vote for the town as friendliest. Hundreds of towns were nominated across the five categories, but Murray finished the voting in second place, guaranteeing it a site visit from one of the Best of the Road teams. Each team was assigned to a category and each category had six finalist towns. The teams traveled cross country from Washington, D.C. to Seattle, Wash., putting Murray as the first friendliest contender to receive a visit. The other nominees were Joplin, Mo., College Station, Texas, Frisco, Texas, Cloudcroft, N.M. and San Luis Obispo, Calif.
July 17, 2012, in Seattle Wash. it was announced that Murray had been named the Friendliest Small Town in America. Word spread like wildfire through social media and the entire community beamed with pride. "We already know how friendly Murray is; now it's time for the whole world to know," Carrico said. In an interview with USA Today, Jordon and Schatz said that Murray residents "had a way of bringing you in, and we made friends. This is the only town where we went into people's homes." They added, "It feels like home in Murray more than anywhere else." v
The Best of the Road team that visited Murray consisted of Jennifer Jordon and Bob Schatz, who spent three days in the area. During that time, they met with many residents while also getting to know the area. The team took a sightseeing plane ride over the region, went boating on Kentucky Lake, attended a community picnic at Central Park and dined at local favorites including the Big Apple Cafe, Rudy's and Jasmine. Jordon and Schatz spent the next month visiting the remaining five towns. Then, on

Quilt Trail
Barn Quilts Blanket Murray
T
he Calloway County Quilt Trail combines art, history, and a pleasurable countryside drive. Consisting of a quilt pattern, usually with a unique meaning or story painted on a large square, they can be found in locations ranging from historic barns to downtown shops in the city.
A group of homemakers started the quilt trail in 2010 and since then it has rapidly grown to include more than 35 squares as of March 2013. Barn quilts can be found throughout Calloway County, mainly on historic barns and painted in a variety of patterns and colors. Each pattern is chosen by the land owner and often has a special meaning. One quilt, hanging at the home of Terry and Judi Little on Irvin Cobb Rd., is a blue fan pattern with a heart and the words, "For Fannie" painted on it. According to Mrs. Little, "This quilt was done in memory of Terry's loving stepmom. While Fannie was always handy with all forms of crafts and needlework, she made her first quilt at the age of 70. Then, there was no stopping her. For the next eight years, she quilted up a storm, finally letting arthritis force her into machine quilting. Fannie also loved any color…as long as it was blue."
The quilt squares are not always found on barns and are not always located outside of the city. Quilt squares can be found at several locations in Murray, including the Chamber of Commerce office, the Calloway County courthouse and at multiple downtown shops, adding color and character to the buildings. A complete listing of the barn quilts including photos, addresses and descriptions can be found at murrayquilts.tumblr.com. v

History
Remembering the Past
W
ith charming historical sites and beautiful university buildings, Murray is a college town with enough tradition to keep it grounded and enough students to keep it lively. With 17,000 residents, the city serves as the seat of Calloway County and an industrial center that keeps this family-oriented town running. Historians believe this industrial center dates back almost 200 years to 1818, when supposedly two men named David Jones and James Stewart began the first settlement. The handful of residents who lived there dubbed the settlement Willistown, after early settler James Willis. Merely four years after that establishment, settlers formed Calloway County from a section of land that originally included Marshall County and it became the 72nd county in the Commonwealth. From the county’s establishment, people began to profit from the area’s environmental resources. Originally, Calloway included a section of flat land dubbed “the barren lands,” which people soon covered in timber. The county’s fields also proved particularly fertile for growing “Gold Leaf Tobacco.” Tobacco fields dotted the countryside, and eventually,
as many as 15 factories processed the crop. The population started to increase with the sale and cultivation of the land.
Historians believe this industrial center dates back almost 200 years to the year 1818.
Willistown itself began as a post office and trading center. It sat on an 80-acre plot, which was divided into 137 business and residential lots, with only eight streets connecting them. As the city grew, people had a hard time deciding what to call the expanding town. First, it switched from Willistown to Pooltown, after local merchant Robert Pool. Then it changed to Pleasant Springs. By January 17, 1844, the day of the city’s incorporation, citizens had settled upon the simple moniker, Murray, a name honoring United States Congressman John L. Murray. Shortly after the incorporation, the Civil War ravaged the country. Calloway County remained neutral—at least officially. However, Confederate feelings spread throughout the population and approximately 500 men joined Confederate forces as opposed to the roughly 200 who joined the Union Army. For a while, Confederate forces occupied Fort Heiman, a structure built in the southwest corner of the county. General Abram Buford commanded the fort with one brigade of cavalry, one regiment of infantry and a battery of light artillery. During the same period, marauders wearing both uniforms prowled the area, robbing residents of food, money and horses. The Civil War was a harsh time for

History both soldiers and civilians, but Union and Confederate forces fought no battles within the Calloway area.
Murray’s fortune turned especially bright with the establishment of Murray State University. A few decades after the war, Murray’s fortune turned especially bright. The year 1922 saw the establishment of Murray State University. The university began as the Murray State Normal School and owes its existence to a man named Rainey T. Wells. Wells lobbied the Normal School Commission to choose Murray as the site for a new institution, and he eventually became the second president of the university after John Wesley Carr. Since Murray State’s establishment, the city itself has changed to reflect its status as a college town. Bookstores dot the shopping areas and restaurants stay open late, catering to midnight studiers. Today, the school possesses a student body of more than 10,000 and holds a prestigious place in the academic world. U.S. News has placed the university on its list of best colleges for 21 years, and the 2012 rankings rate
Murray State among the top 10 public schools in the South. Branching out from the university’s red brick buildings, Murray has thrived. The farming communities that first populated the area still exist along with shopping centers, restaurants, beautiful parks and top-rated schools. Murray has been recognized as one of the 100 Best Communities for Young People, Playful City, USA and most recently, the Friendliest Small Town in America. Calloway County has long since passed its days as a total agrarian community and Murray has grown into much more than a post office and a trading center. As these awards show, those historical beginnings have turned Murray into the nationally recognized city it is today. v

Or, to a magical land faraway where a green ogre attempts to rescue a beautiful princess from her tower guarded by a fire breathing, love-sick dragon. A performance at the local community theater, Playhouse in the Park, can pluck viewers from their seats and transport them to another time and place. Each year, Playhouse takes on a variety of performances ranging from modern musicals to the classics. The 2013 season will include plays such as Fiddler on the Roof, Shrek the Musical and Miracle on 34th Street. Playhouse in the Park, which was founded in 1977, is a unique community theater located in Central Park in an old freight train depot. Playhouse Executive Director Lisa Cope attributes the theater's success to the enthusiasm and theatrical abilities of local residents. "I'm constantly amazed by two things," she said. "One is how well the community supports this theater. They come to the shows, they support the actors, they support any kind of program that we try to do. The other thing is the amount of talent that's out there in this area. We're just blown away, time and time again."
“We tell our kids that the skills that they learn here are skills that they can use their whole lives.” Executive Director, Lisa Cope
The theater has opportunities for actors of all ages, beginning with the Pail of Tadpoles group consisting of 1st-8th grade students. The "tadpoles" then grow up and are included in the Box of Frogs young actor's guild for those in 9th grade-college. Playhouse even has a senior citizens acting troupe, called Old Duffers and Powder Puffers. Upcoming plays, performance dates and times, and tickets can be found at the Playhouse in the Park website, playhouseinthepark.net. In addition to Playhouse in the Park, several plays are held annually by the Murray State University Theater Department in the Robert E. Johnson Theater, as well as at other on-campus venues. The campus also hosts a Shakespeare Festival each year, which showcases the American Shakespeare Center on tour from Staunton, Va.

Besides the museum, MSU also boasts the CFSB Center, an 8,500 seat multi-purpose arena that hosts a variety of events. The CFSB Center holds concerts, trade shows, conventions, sports tournaments, consignment sales and is also the home of MSU basketball. Each year the arena has events like the West Kentucky Boat and Outdoor Show, Kentucky Kids Consignment Sale and the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus. Musically, the CFSB Center has held concerts from big name artists including Bob Dylan, Maroon 5, John Mayer, Miranda Lambert, Lady Antebellum and Jason Aldean. Lovett Live Onstage is a unique series where concert-goers sit on stage with the artist, hear stories behind the songs and interact with the performer. v
After spending 11 years in New York City, Jennifer Fairbanks returned to Murray to open her own art gallery, named Gallery 109 & Fairbanks Studio. Each year it is home to exhibits from local, national and international artists. Classes, such as drawing and oilpainting, are conducted weekly. The Murray Art Guild, a local non-profit educational and cultural organization, offers classes and workshops to help develop the talent of local artists. New Industry Grows Murray
L
ate 2012 and early 2013 brought good news to Murray and its economy. Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear made two trips to the town during that time to announce new industries, iwis motorsysteme (pronounced e-vis) and Kemmerich USA, would be locating in Murray.
“The employees (here) have an excellent work ethic and are very productive.” Governor Steve Beshear In November 2012 it was announced that iwis motorsysteme would be coming to Murray and operating in a currently vacant building. The German company, founded in 1916, is a leading supplier for the automotive industry. Its management had been looking for a site for the new plant since late 2011, and after an extensive search finally settled on Murray. Governor Beshear and other state officials visited Europe to convince iwis that Murray was the best location for its operations. The company plans to hire 75 workers and will begin operations in 2014. Just two months later, another German company, Kemmerich USA, revealed its plan to build a new
plant in Murray. The plant would be the automotive supplier's U.S. headquarters. The company will be the first to build in the new Murray West Industrial Park, just across the street from iwis. With it will come 120 new full-time jobs. According to Governor Beshear, there are several qualities that make the western Kentucky region attractive to industry. “They appreciate Kentucky’s central location, our solid infrastructure, our comparable taxes and our low utility rates, and most of all, our energetic workforce,” he said. Mark Manning, president of the Murray Calloway Economic Development Corporation shares the Governor's opinion of the local workforce. “I think the employees have an excellent work ethic and are very productive,” he said. “If you look back over the last three years, you will find that the economy and unemployment in Murray and Calloway County have been amazingly resilient and strong,” Manning said. In times of economic uncertainty, the announcement of two new industries coming to town is a big win for Murray and Calloway County. v

Community
Angel's Clinic Provides Hope
A
ngel's Clinic, which provides health care to the uninsured working population of Murray, opened in 2000 and just two years later was in a financial crisis, in danger of having to close its doors. Despite aggressive fundraising, the clinic just could not stay afloat. Leaders of St. John's Episcopal Church approached Clinic Board Chairperson Donna Herndon about opening a thrift shop that could fund the clinic, and the rest is history. The thrift shop was named Angel's Attic, and it quickly became clear that it would be a success. Today, the shop employs 17 workers and 35 regular volunteers. Angel's Attic provides for the community in three exclusive ways. First and foremost, it funds Angel's Clinic, to which it has given $1.3 million as of December 2011. The clinic is an asset to Murray because its services do not overlap the local health department's and it serves those who need help the most. Second, Angel's Attic provides clothing, furniture, appliances, books and toys to the population at a vastly reduced rate. Many of those who purchase items at the store would not be able to afford them at full price. Lastly, Angel's Attic is a way for community members to give back. Whether it's donating used items or volunteering at the store, there is an opportunity for anyone to offer a helping hand.
Knowing that Angel's Attic and Angel's Clinic work together cohesively for the betterment of the community makes Murray a heartwarming place to call home. v
According to Mike Crook, store manager, Angel's Attic also "loans various medical equipment such as wheel chairs, walkers and canes to those in need free of charge." In addition, the shop makes an effort to be environmentally friendly, recycling textiles, shoes, metal, books and other items. In the years of 2011-12, the store recycled or repurposed more than 300 tons of potential refuse.

surprise win over four-seed Vanderbilt in the second round of the 2010 NCAA tournament. The last undefeated team in Division I basketball in 2012, ending the season with a 312 record. These are just some of the reasons a contagious excitement surrounds Murray State Racer basketball. Racer Nation, as MSU fans like to collectively call themselves, grew quickly during the historic 2011-12 basketball season. A national spotlight was cast upon Murray as the Racers fought for win after win, going down in history as the last undefeated team in the nation. The pride felt for the Racers could be easily detected; every public place in town was filled with fans sporting MSU gear and every outdoor sign and shop window seemed to be dedicated to basketball. The 2012-13 season also proved to be exciting, as the Racers beat conferencefavorite Belmont in the regular season and played in the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament Championship

game. With 26 consecutive winning seasons, the Murray State Racers are the team to watch in the future. In addition to the stellar men's basketball team, Murray State has many successful programs, including a football team with eight OVC titles. The school is also home to sports such as cross-country, golf, rifle, track and field, volleyball, baseball, soccer and tennis.

Sports & Recreation have grown significantly over the past few years, with more than 700 participants in 2013. Parks Director Tab Brockman said, "Baseball has a long, rich tradition in Murray. Also, softball has grown very quickly due in part to the addition of Murray State softball." The parks include other ways for youngsters to stay active with a swimming complex, spray park, batting cages, basketball courts, five playgrounds, a disc golf course and three vs of developed nature trails.
Recreation
Parks aren't just for kids, and the Murray Parks system is well aware of this fact. It offers adult leagues in co-ed softball, flag football, soccer and a new fitness boot camp. One of the most-used areas of the park is the disc golf course. In disc golf, individual players throw a flying disc, similar to a Frisbee, at a target. The Central Park course is 18 holes with a total length of more than 52 feet and is par 58. For traditional golfers, Calloway County is the place to be. There are four different courses in or near Murray, including the Frances E. Miller Memorial Golf Course. Used by the Murray State University golf team, Miller Memorial was named one of the best designed 18-hole courses in America by the American Society of Golf Architects. In addition to golf, Calloway County and Kentucky Lake are the perfect areas for hunting, fishing, boating and trail riding. Nearby Land Between the Lakes offers nature viewing, canoeing, hiking and much more. v

Students can choose from 30 different extracurricular academic and athletic programs while utilizing the school system’s library/media centers and gymnasiums. Calloway County schools employ roughly 500 faculty members and staff that serve approximately 3,000 children. Spending per student comes in at more than $8,800.
The Murray Independent School System dates back to 1872, when a group of citizens built the first Murray High School in the center of town. Today, that one school has evolved into a small system of three institutions comprised of an elementary, middle and high school. The surrounding community remains as education-minded as ever, and each school possesses a parent-teacher organization and a booster club for band and athletics. The system also has an active school-business partnership program. Through these organizations, more than 1,000 parents and community members contribute their time and energies to the education of Murray children.
With an annual budget of roughly $25.5 million, the Calloway County School System provides resources to ensure students and parents receive the best scholastic experience possible. Four Family Resource Centers serve residents within the district, seeking to identify the unmet needs of students and families and mobilizing all available assets to meet them. The district also offers children and parents an online portal for quick access to grading, assignment and attendance information so entire families can stay involved in the learning process. In January 2013, these efforts earned the Calloway County Board of Education the Advancing Student Achievement to Proficiency award from the Kentucky School Board Association. The KSBA bestows the honor upon school boards that have met 10 individual standards for advancing child accomplishment including development of a monthly agenda that focuses on student achievement and adherence to that agenda. 24

Eastwood Christian Academy has served children in Murray, Ky., since 1978 with the purpose of giving students the highest possible education while simultaneously training them spiritually. The school models this purpose after the development of Jesus described in Luke 2:52, “And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God.” A member of the American Association of Christian Schools, Eastwood Christian Academy features a half-day kindergarten program along with an elementary and high school that teach 1st through 12th grades. Enrolled students learn to see the world through a Christ-centered point of view, experiencing Bible study, chapels, strong academics, good discipline, Christian friends and protection against negative influences. In addition, they also have access to assets comparable to those in public schools, such as a library, science lab and

Tourism
An Abundance of Family Fun Shopping and Antiques
Although most small towns boast shopping as a fun activity, Murray is home to more than its fair share of boutique, antique and specialty shops. Bookstores, clothing boutiques and home decor stores are scattered throughout town. Most stores are locally owned, which stock items that are unique, and can't be found anywhere else.
nature viewing, all wrapped by 300 miles of undeveloped shoreline. At LBL's Golden Pond Planetarium and Observatory, visitors can sit under the stars while discovering the universe. The planetarium creates a unique and fun adventurous learning experience. In addition, guests can discover life on a 19th Century farm by visiting The Homeplace. Visitors take a leisurely stroll through the grounds, farm buildings and even interact with the interpreters. LBL is working to carefully restore a habitat lost more than a century ago with the Elk and Bison Prairie. The animals freely roam within a 700-acre enclosure. Guests can enjoy the area while driving the 3.5 mile loop road. There are three interpretive stops along the route to learn a little more about the prairie ecosystem. At LBL's Woodlands Nature Station, patrons can enjoy a guided hike or canoe excursion. It is also home to an indoor discovery center, as well as live wildlife in its backyard exhibits.
Kentucky Lake One of Calloway County's most important attractions is a small town named Hazel, the antique shopping capital of western Kentucky. Originally established in 1890, Hazel was a booming railroad town. As time passed and the railroad industry began to dwindle, so did the small town, and by the late 1980s Hazel was struggling to stay alive. Then, the emergence of a few antique stores breathed the life back into it. Today, Hazel has more than a dozen shops representing hundreds of antiques dealers. It is also home to an art gallery, a jewelry store and few cozy restaurants.
Calloway County is home to Kentucky Lake, a haven for outdoor adventure. The lake hosts some of the best fishing, boating and hunting in the country. It is known as the "Crappie Capital" of the world and also has an exceptional population of largemouth bass. In fact, catching a bass in excess of five pounds is not uncommon. The lake also houses several other fish including smallmouth bass, spot, bluegill, red ear, white bass, shell cracker, stripers and sauger. For hunters, there are more than 250 days of hunting seasons in the area. Kentucky is regularly featured as

With a large regional population, strong community organizations and a zest for fun, it's no wonder Murray hosts several festivals and events each year. Freedom Fest, an Independence Day celebration, is Murray's oldest and most popular festival. The weekend event kicks off on a Friday evening with a street fair full of vendors serving fair favorites like funnel cakes and corn dogs, and also includes arts, crafts, games and more. A free outdoor concert on the court square featuring popular local bands lasts well into the night. Saturday is a day for family fun. As the sun
rises, local businesses host a 5K and one-mile run. Next, thousands of people line Main Street for what has been referred to as the "largest small town parade," often featuring over 80 different entries. Kids' Zone is open on the court square, and provides inflatables and children's activities at no cost. Later that evening, Central Park is filled with families listening to music, enjoying pony rides and munching on good food. They all gather together for the favorite Freedom Fest activity, fireworks. The Briggs and Stratton Fireworks Extravaganza always proves to be a dazzling show that lights up the sky to awe-struck viewers. As the summer weather begins to cool, locals look forward to one of their favorite events: the Ice Cream Festival. What could be better than free ice cream? The September event features free Purity Ice Cream, a homemade ice cream competition, inflatables, a singing contest and other fun activities. Just a few weeks later, the Scottish take over Murray. The Murray Highland Festival is a fun event where participants can enjoy music from bagpipes, unique athletic competitions, highland cattle, sheep herding and much more. Each of these events adds to Murray's unique flavor. A detailed listing of events can be found at mymurray.com. v

Safety & Security
Safety is Top Priority
S
afety is one of our most basic needs and its value is absolute. Creating a safe environment is important to Murray-Calloway County, its residents, government and police.
In the past, Murray was named one of the 100 Best Communities for Young People by America's Promise Alliance. According to americaspromise.org, APA believes there are fundamental resources that young people need to succeed, one of which is having a safe place to live. The organization is built around the framework of ensuring that more young people experience safety. After years of work, a local committee obtained a designation from the National Safety Council as A Safe Community America for Murray State University. The NSC states on its website that it awards communities "that have demonstrated leadership in safety promotion and injury prevention... Each community has made an investment to ensure that their community is a safe place to live, work and visit." The local men in blue dedicate themselves not only to preserving the peace in the county’s suburbs, farms and business districts, but they make concerted efforts to involve residents with their work. To accomplish this, the department hosts programs throughout the year that better educate citizens about crime prevention and

The academy combines classroom work with outdoor physical activity to provide children with both an entertaining and informative experience. Finally, in August, the department sponsors National Night Out, a program designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, strengthening neighborhood spirit in the process. The Murray Police’s Sergeant Scott Svebakken says programs like the Citizen’s Police Academy, the Chief Novel McReynolds Youth Academy and the National Night Out make the department unique. They send the message to the community that residents play a role in public safety and the local police departments finds them important. “We are a very community oriented department,” Svebakken said. “I think we do strive to educate the community, and we try to have a close relationship with the community. And, we want involvement in our community. I think there are a lot of police departments that try to do that, but I think that we go the extra mile to try and actually accomplish these things, especially with the Citizens Police Academy. The Murray Police offer other services, as well, including programs that provide residents with children’s fingerprinting kits and drug tests for parents worried about their teenagers.

he hills and lakes surrounding Murray and Calloway County are lined with road systems that efficiently connect the homes and businesses in the area. The main roadways, US Highway 641, Kentucky 80, Kentucky 121 and Kentucky 94 link the area to Paducah via Marshall County, Mayfield and Graves County, Henry County, Tenn. and the Kentucky Lakes recreation region. They also provide quick access to the closest metropolitan areas. When considering which road to take, residents can opt for multiple modes of transportation for their trips. Many Murray State students and residents utilize the Murray Calloway Transit Authority, a system of public transportation routes running throughout the city. The MCTA buses ferry passengers around town for affordable prices—especially for Murray State University students and senior citizens. Ages 60 and up may ride for 50 cents per trip while students who show their school IDs may ride for free. In addition to buses, the MCTA also owns the Racer Country Trolley, a motorized trolley available for charter. Locals can also travel from the area by air, land and river. Kyle-Oakley Field, Calloway County's local airport, facilitates excellent air travel for private planes. It recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. Johnny Parker, airport manager, said the airport has come a long way since it first opened in 1961. “All that was here was a ramp, taxiway and runway. We didn’t have fuel, a hangar, an office or lights.” Now Kyle-Oakley Field is an essential part of the economy and has helped attract new industry to Murray. Pella Corporation Pilot

“Murray is within a day's drive of two thirds of the country, making it accessible for anyone.” Michael Warren says the airport is one of the better sites that he visits. "I appreciate Kyle-Oakley field because it has a long and wide runway, it is well lit and it has a good digital instrumentation system, which makes landing in bad weather easier," he told the Murray Ledger and Times on October 29, 2011. For public air travel, Barkley Regional Airport in Paducah provides daily flights via United Express to Chicago. The nearest metropolitan airport is Nashville International Airport (BNA), which provides connections to destinations worldwide. Freight is carried by the KWT Railway, running from a depot near Murray to Bruceton, Tenn. In addition, the Port of Murray lies about 15 miles northeast of the city and allows companies to ship cargo up and down the Tennessee River. Knowing Our Roots
E
ach Saturday morning as the light of dawn creeps over the horizon, the court square begins to come alive with the sights of farmers unloading fresh produce from their trucks. This is the beginning of the Downtown Saturday Market, one of two farmer's markets in Calloway County. At each of the markets, residents get a literal taste of why local farmers spend their lives digging in the county’s soil to produce sprouts of lettuce, tomato, wheat and corn. At each vendor's space, plump, red tomatoes spill over baskets and ears of corn lay across tables, their kernels covered in shucks. The Farmer's Market of Murray-Calloway County takes place during choice week days in the summer and fall, and is located at the Calloway County Fairgrounds. The Downtown Saturday Market is held every Saturday morning during the months of May through October on the court square. Calloway farmers have produced crops since the county’s founding in 1822, blanketing the rural landscape with picturesque fields. The area boasts a variety of agriculture including both traditional and modern methods of farming that cultivate several fresh products including tobacco, soybeans, wheat and various types of vegetables. Historically, many farmers achieved lucrative success with the production of tobacco. Calloway’s soil proved especially fertile for gold leaf tobacco, and as many as 15 companies once existed in the area to manufacture the crop. Since then, Murray’s agricultural community has diversified, and growers cultivate multiple crops in a variety of ways. Hillyard Field Organics serves as a unique example. Certified organic by the United States Department of Agriculture, the business’ five acres produce crops such as lettuce, spinach, asparagus, tomatoes and eggplant along with all-natural, pasture-raised beef,

pork and chicken. Using mule-drawn equipment when possible, the operation exists as a twist on modern farming. Conversely, William “Billy” Dale Smith cultivates a farm steeped in family history. Smith runs a compilation of land tracts that has existed in his family for four generations, but the need to grow has existed in Smith blood for much longer. The grower said his family has farmed Calloway County land since approximately 1830. Smith first tried his own hand at the plow in the early 1970s. Since then, he has made his living coaxing crops such as soybeans, tobacco and corn from soil. The practice has given him a love for the area. “This is the only place I’ve ever lived—the only place I’ve ever known,” he said. “When I go away, I can’t wait to get back. Kirksey (in Calloway County) is home to me, and there’s no place like home… To me, it just doesn’t get any better than this area right here.” While farmers like Smith have a familial connection to the land deepened by hours in the fields, all area residents can enjoy the fruits of their labor. Offering heaps of fresh vegetables, fruits and honey, local farmers can share their passions at these markets, and shoppers can sample agrarian life—or, they can sample the delicious part of it, at least. v

Going Green
Reduce, Reuse
F
or the past several years, local officials have sponsored programs that offer citizens opportunities to recycle their old newspapers and aluminum cans instead of dumping them in landfills. Make a Difference Day, one of the city's biggest environmental events, has been hosted 90 times as of April 2013. Held approximately five times per year, the event allows residents to drop off recyclable products from paper to motor oil. According to Mayor Bill Wells, approximately 500 to 600 cars drive through Murray State University’s stadium parking lot within the event’s four-hour time span depositing an astounding number of recyclables. In the first 90 events, Wells says the city collected 2,756 tons of paper, 105,050 pounds of aluminum cans, more than 17,015 gallons of motor oil, 73,350 pounds of discarded clothes, 35,000 pounds of batteries and 130,000 pounds of glass. The Mayor says Make a Difference Day also gives him the opportunity to connect with the community and witness their excitement. “I see many of the same people,” he said. “The first thing they’ll do, they ask, ‘When’s the next one?’” He said the program will now also offer a new service for shredding paper, so residents can drop by and shred important documents for free.
Not only is Make a Difference Day good for the environment, it's also good for the community. Each type of recyclable is dedicated to a certain organization, so that it will receive the funds made from recycling it. Organizations benefitting from the event include the Lion's Club, the Resource Centers of Murray and Calloway County, Kiwanis Club, West Kentucky Mentoring, the Work Activities Training Center for the Handicapped, Court Appointed Special Advocates (advocacy for abused children) and Angel's Clinic. City and county officials also team up with Murray State University to offer regular recycling services to the public. On the first Saturday of each month, the university opens up the recycling facility on its North Farm property to the community. Residents can stop by and deposit paper, aluminum and plastics. Other recycling centers exist in the area, as well, including Murray Recycling, LLC, Key Recycling and a Murray Sanitation Department drop-off on Andrus Drive. The Andrus Drive location is open 24/7 and includes drop offs for paper, plastic and glass. In addition to providing recycling facilities with the city and county, Murray State promotes environmental awareness, as well. Through the placement of blue bins around campus, the school encourages students and staff to dispose of their paper cups and used soft drink cans responsibly. Rick Grogan says this reflects the university’s desire to keep the environment both on and off campus clean and stable and to increase enthusiasm for recycling. “We’re going through a process of trying to update and make the recycling process on campus more consistent—trying to get more people involved,” he says. The University, city and county’s efforts seem to pay off. Any resident within the county limits has easy access to recycling facilities and can even order a pickup for their recyclable trash as easy as they can order a pizza. v
