EDUCATION DESIGN: NEW LARAMIE HIGH SCHOOL
NEW LARAMIE
New Laramie High School is set to be the fourth largest high school west of Chicago. This school is nearly 300,000 square feet. The concept behind New Laramie is to bring a modern building with cutting edge technology to the town of Laramie, Wyoming. It has an Olympic size basketball gym and pool, cyber cafe, expansive central commons area, full theater and music rooms and commercial size kitchen. New Laramie is on track to be occupied Summer of 2015. The colors that were chosen for NLHS were based off of a rock that came from the current site. Vibrant oranges with a hint of rust, bright asparagus green, cool greys, straw yellow and a beautiful maroon add gorgeous pops of color that compliment the amazing architecture of this state of the art building. Due to the size of the building, wayfinding was used through colors in the floor and walls to help guide students, faculty and visitors to different wings & learning areas.

AprĂŠs Brewpub features an onsight brewery that provides the beer for the other restaurants on-site as well as sales for guests and locals in the area. The majority of the hops are grown on-site just outside of the brewery walls. All of the wood used in the design is reclaimed or FSC certified. There is a wall that is made of old beer bottles and fly-ash cement as well as one made from scrapwood for a subtle add of interest and conversation. Ample daylighting and natural passive ventilation was also incorporated throughout the design. Tall Tops

Ipanema is a fine dining restaurant inspired by the Rio de Janeiro carnival. It is an exotic, bright and flavorful restaurant with locally sourced food. The idea here is to give guests a unique and exuberant experience that will stay with them forever. Because of extensive use of rich colors it was important to incorporate natural elements as well. Some of these included a string garden, colored wood pendants and natural organic forms throughout. All finishes used are recycled content, recyclable, and/ or low or no VOC. All the wood is either FSC certified or reclaimed from a local source.

The Romantic Luxury Suite is one of six unique flats on the fourth floor of Building 5A. All of the flats have their own theme. The Romantic is designed for couples who want an escape in the mountains. It is a perfect option for honeymoons or any occasion for couples. The suite features a large bed in the center of the flat that is on a rotating platform. There are curtains that can be closed or open for added privacy and seclusion. The unique accent lighting adds romance and all fixtures are on dimmers. The bar area of the suite offers a lush sectional sofa and mini bar that looks out onto the patio and mountains the resort sits at the summit of.

The hotel rooms at EntrÊvista are designed to make guests feel comforted and at home. The warm colors and tones make for a cozy cabin feeling while still being very spacious. Each room has a breath-taking view of the beautiful mountainscape as well as it’s own secluded patio. All of the patios feature large hot tubs great for after skiing in the winter and cool nights in the summer. Each suite is equipped with a full kitchen and dining area for meals. The living room has a double-sided fireplace shared with the bedroom, full sofa and lounge chair. The decorative shelving on the wall will be used as a living wall for herbs and grass. The hotel also has a ceiling fan for warm summer and spring days. All the appliances and fixtures are energy efficient. Every finish throughout the hotel suites has recycled content, is recyclable, has no or low VOCs and/or is locally sourced. To ensure ample daylight throughout, lightshelves were placed under the windows.

RESTAURANT + RETAIL
Main Dining in Revit
Valhalla Norwegian Cuisine was a collaborative project I worked on with fellow Interior Design students Chelsea Hutson and Delaney Wray as well as Graphic Design students Eric Bravo and Tyler Comerford. Throughout this project which included the rehabilitation of an existing building project shell, we combined ideas and harmonized our creativity into a beautiful, environmentally responsible restaurant. Norway is a very environmentally responsible country and it was of utmost importance to follow their love of the land and surrounding environment. Our design included the use of daylighting strategies and sensors, green roofs, and reclaimed wood. We specified low-flow fixtures, LED lights, low/no VOC finishes and adhesives, and all recycled content, rapidly renewable, or natural finishes throughout.
SUSTAINABLE PRACTICES
SUSTAINABILITY
During my Green 3 course, fellow classmates Delaney Wray and Margaret Tillman and I were assigned to engage in a charrette. The project required us to renovate an old Albertson’s building that would be turned into classrooms and an extension of our school. We were given 3 hours to come up with a plan and sustainable mission for this existing building off Colfax Avenue. The current conditions included 3 existing windows, no HVAC system, 43,000 total square feet, an open floor plan, 22’-0” ceilings and a loading dock that must remain usable. Our statement of intent read “To continue creating an innovative education and responsible environment and community connectivity through visual art and design.” Factors we considered while concluding our design solution included site location, the up and coming art district, community connectivity, integrating majors, educating the public about our sustainability, flexibility, daylighting, cooling and heating, ventilation, energy conservation, water reduction, green roof and landscaping, recycling and compost and biophilia. Our design solution concluded in six categories; energy, water, biophilia, the exterior, daylighting and heating and cooling. Our resolution included the use of dye sensitive PV panels, light dimmers, and high performance windows to help with energy reduction. To reduce the water use we chose waterless urinals, graywater from sinks and showers to irrigate and for toilets as well as low-flow fixtures. Biophilia we would incorporate into the design also included the dye sensitive PV panels that are in the shape of butterfly wings as well as hexagon molded interior walls. The facade of the building would include trees for shading the parking lot and the building as well as the use of pervious pavers and bioswales to help with stormwater. Xeriscaping, information signage and an extensive green roof would also be implemented into the design of the previous Albertson’s building. To increase daylighting in the space light wells, light tubes, skylights, daylighting sensors, occupant sensors and clerestories would be installed. The use of an evaporative cooling tower, passive ventilation through stack ventilation, direct gain through a trombe wall, and louvers powered by PV panels would be included in the design of the extension of Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design. By including all of this in the design of the building, we would have achieved a LEED Certification of Platinum with 102 total points.
