Welcome to the KABK Community Hi there, and a big welcome to the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague (KABK) in the Netherlands! Each year, around 950 students from all over the world join us at the KABK, including pupils and students of the Preparatory Courses. With this booklet we hope to give you some basic information about your study at the KABK and the Netherlands. You can find a lot of information in this booklet, but you can find more on our portal. We make use of a new internal communication platform which we call the Portal. Each department has access to the portal and has department specific pages where study related information can be found. Next to this the department and academy can use the portal to post announcements which are important for students. There is a great deal of information about the KABK and its functioning under the button ‘The KABK’ as well. We encourage all students and staff to frequently check the portal and to use the information to your benefit. Go to the portal by typing portal.kabk.nl in your browser or scan the QR code with your phone. Enjoy your time at the KABK! Did you know The University of the Arts The Hague is the overarching organisation of the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague (KABK) and the Royal Conservatoire (KC). Both faculties have their own director. They jointly form the Executive Board. 5

KABK Building

The Academy building Monumental Building Welcome to our 1930’s building! Proudly we can share with you that our academy building is a historical monument and occupies over 18.000 m2. In the building we have many different types of spaces which you can make use of, think of an auditorium, several gallery spaces, a small cinema room, over 14 workshops and several studios. We encourage all of you to make active use of this during your study! Please consider that our building is very old and needs extra care and attention. So please use it respectfully! Floorplan KABK Our 18.000 m2 building can sometime feel like a maze. To help you or guests we’ve created a floorplan which is to be found on the portal. Read more about our building on the portal. House rules To respectfully collaborate with each other we have a set of house riles. If we all stick to these (students and staff), we make sure we have a great time together. The house rules are divided in three parts; Safely, Responsibly, With respect towards fellow students, staff, and the building. We, as KABK community work safely, responsibly and with respect.

7

Safely • We always follow safety instructions. • Escape routes are always free of clutter. • By Dutch law it is not allowed to smoke in and around the academy building (incl. courtyards, entrance, parking). • Drugs are not allowed. We have a zero-tolerance policy regarding this. • Hazardous materials are stored safely. Responsibly • We minimise the use of environmentally impactful materials. • We recycle our waste. • We only use spray cans in the spray booth. • Leftover paints, solvents e.g., are thrown in allocated containers. • Biking and skating only outside the building and courtyards. • Assistance dogs are the only animals allowed on the premises. With respect towards fellow students, staff, and the building: • Theft is reported and not tolerated. • Damage is charged to perpetrator. • We take care and respect our 1930’s academy building. Meaning we don’t drill holes or apply other damaging materials to the building. • We use designated areas for our posters. • We use designated areas as bicycle parking. This overview can also be found on the portal 8

COVID-19 in The Netherlands Like other art schools and institutes of higher education worldwide, the KABK has entered a period in which we are challenged to keep our students and staff safe and keep the education and the application process in good shape, albeit in alternative forms. The KABK staff monitors and discusses the newest developments frequently, and makes new decisions if appropriate. As the measures change regularly we advise you to check out the portal and website of the Dutch Government. The current basic rules in the Netherlands are: • Please wash your hands regularly • If you develop symptoms get tested and stay home • We advise everyone to get vaccinated

Student Services At the KABK we have several student services which are here to help you follow your study: The Student Administration, Financial Administration, and the International Office. Student Administration All general information about studying at the KABK can be provided by the student administration. Please inform them if you change your home or postal address, phone number or email address. It is important your home address is always up to date. The student administration can be reached via studentadministration@kabk.nl Student Card All students receive a student card at the start of their study programme. Your student card remains valid for the entire duration of your study programme. You can use your student card both inside and outside the academy. Within the academy to pay for your materials in the workshops, to print or copy. To do so, you need to top up your card with money (cash or card) using the top-up machines which you can find in the corridor near the Student Administration. You also need your student card to make use of our library facilities, the rental, and workshops. Outside the KABK, you can use it to get discounts at certain museums, shops, or food places. This will always be listed on their website of in their shop if this is the case. Are you not sure, simply ask them! The distribution of your student card will happen during the introduction days and/or during your first classes in the academy. 12

Please note: Please note: In case your student card gets lost or stolen, you will have to purchase a new card at a charge of €10 Registering at the municipality & BSN number Upon arrival in the Netherlands, it is important that you register yourself in the municipality database. After your registration in the municipality database, you will receive a BSN number, this is a unique personal identification number for everyone who must deal with the Dutch government. To be able to register with the municipality, you should be allowed to register yourself on the address you live. Pay attention to this in your housing contract. We try to organize a central registration day for international students from the KABK. Students who live in the Municipal-ity of The Hague can join the Student Administration Team to organize their registration. The academy has organized together with the municipality a central registration day. Find more information including the documents to take with you on the portal

Health and Liability Insurance

Registering

Health and Liability Insurance Students who come to study in the Netherlands are obliged by Dutch law to have a Health insurance. Students at the KABK also need to have a Liability insurance. On the portal we’ve created an extensive overview with detailed information on this topic. We recommend you to check this.

13

Health insurance Having the right healthcare insurance during your stay at our school is of the utmost importance. It will give you the peace of mind needed while you are studying, that if something happens to you, you will be taken care of. International students who are privately insured in their own country should bring along a statement (in English) with details about their health insurance program. Find useful information on how to arrange your Health insurance as an international student in The Netherlands on the portal. Liability Insurance All students (including Dutch students) at the KABK are required to be insured for any damage caused to school property as well as any damage caused to a third person’s property outside the school (for example, in case you hit a car with your bicycle and cause damage). All students need to provide both their insurance documents (Health and Liability) after they have been admitted to the KABK. Travel insurance is not accepted, as it covers neither healthcare expenses (Health Insurance) nor damages to third parties (Liability insurance). Financial Administration All information about tuition fees, payments & expense claims at the KABK can be provided by the financial administration. The financial administration can be reached via financien@kabk.nl 14

Bank account You should have no problem obtaining cash from your overseas account using an ATM or in Dutch: geldautomaat. All are available in the English language and accept a wide range of debit and credit cards. The amount you can withdraw, and any extra service charges will depend on what kind of account you have. There should be no charge if you are using a card from one of the Eurozone countries (UK is not one of them). Cash is still widely used, but the most common method of payment is using a debit card. We’ve compiled a detailed overview about several bank accounts on the portal. Housing allowance (huurtoeslag) If you rent a property in the Netherlands and meet certain conditions, you can receive housing allowance. The Tax and Customs Administration offers all information about these conditions and applying for housing allowance. Read more by scanning the QR code

Study finance (DUO) Experience has shown that students living and studying in The Netherlands spend approximately €1,000 a month. This amount is needed to cover daily expenses, meals, accommodation costs, insurance, study books etc. This estimate does not include tuition fees and unforeseen costs and should be used as a general indication of the costs of living in the Netherlands. The costs for housing, for example, may differ considerably. Also, if you plan to travel during your stay, you will obviously need more money. For some departments, material costs are quite high. Whether you qualify for student finance from DUO depends on your age, course and nationality or residency status. If you are under 30 and have a residence permit type I, or the nationality of an EU/EEA country or Switzerland, then you may qualify for student finance. You must work for at least 56 hours per month to be eligible, which for some departments means a very high combined workload. International non-EU/EEA students, who are not eligible for student finance with DUO, are expected to be able to fund their study programme by themselves. There are practically no funding possibilities in the Netherlands. If you are not Dutch and you are not eligible for student finance, you could try to find a job. As an international student, you will need to have a Work Permit (tewerkstellingsvergunning) and something your employer must arrange for you.

16

International Office One of the tasks of the International Office is to stimulate international student exchange and manage the international contacts. It provides information about the various mobility programmes of EU and non-EU/EEA partners, the Dutch government, and the scholarships that are available for students who take courses or do an internship abroad. You can contact the International Office via international@kabk.nl Find more information about the international office, internship opportunities abroad and more on the portal

Dutch Language Courses

Dutch Language Courses Sometimes it might be easier if you understand a bit more of the language of the country your living in. It’s advisable to consider attending a Dutch language course. We listed a couple of possibilities for you on the portal.

Student Support We find it of the upmost importance to create a safe study & work environment with each other. The last couple of years several steps have been taken to make sure we can achieve this. The most important thing to know of all is that when you want to file a complaint you can do so via klachtenloket@kabk.nl Academy Council (DMR-KABK) and University Council (CMR-HdK) The University of the Arts the Hague has two faculty councils of representatives, one for the KABK and one for the Royal Conservatoire. The councils comprise representatives of staff and students. The University Council (CMR-HdK) is chosen from the two councils and supplemented by one representative each from the interfaculty ArtScience and the interfaculty School for Young Talent. Academy Council (DMR-KABK) The Academy Council of the KABK is actively engaged in moving the academy towards a radically progressive future in which the wellbeing and creativity of all students, teachers and staff is the central principal which guides policy decisions. The dates for our public meetings where you are more than free to join the members to follow along with the activities of the Council are mentioned on the portal. If there’s anything you want to bring to our attention, feel free to contact dmr@kabk.nl. Find more information about the Academy Council on the portal and its current members visit the portal. 18

Study Coach The latest addition to our student support system are the study coaches, study coaches are department bound. You can turn to the study coach for all issues that affect your studies negatively. In one-to-one meetings you’ll work together to figure out what’s needed. The study coach can also direct you towards other people when a different expertise is needed to help you further. Ask your department if you want more information about the study coach. Student counsellor or Confidential counsellor In addition to study coaches, an independent student counsellor (Mirjam Pol) and a confidential counsellor (Pauline Schep) can assist with concerns about study progress and/or issues of a more personal nature.

About the confidential counsellor The confidential counsellor is the first point of contact for students who have complaints about undesirable behaviour, integrity issues or (social) safety. Examples are sexually intimating behaviour, bullying, aggression, racism, discrimination, or any other kind of unacceptable behaviour. We do not accept this kind of behaviour. The confidential counsellor offers a listening ear and can help clarifying the problem. She can guide and advise you on the matter at hand. Maybe you want to file an official complaint and want to know more about the procedure or other related matters. Contact Pauline via p.schep@kabk.nl and find relevant information on the portal. Students' Complaints Desk The University of the Arts the Hague has set up an online complaints desk for students’ legal protection. This desk receives the complaints, objections or appeals admitted by students and passes them on to the correct body to ensure that they are dealt with in an appropriate manner. Complaints in either Dutch or English can be sent to: klachtenloket@kabk.nl More information about the students’ Complaints desk can be found on the portal.

Complaints of Inappropriate Behaviour In addition to the Code of Integrity, the Procedure for dealing with complaints of inappropriate behaviour and the Protocol for the confidential adviser are part of the policy to guarantee

a safe climate to work and study in at the University. Find the procedure for dealing with complaints of inappropriate behaviour on the portal. Code of Integrity/Code of Conduct The Code of Integrity or Code of Conduct on Standards of Behaviour lays down the basic principles of how staff and students should behave towards each other and their surroundings; in other words, what is regarded as desirable behaviour. The Code of Integrity also offers scope for challenging persons whose behaviour can be considered reprehensible. You can find and download the code of integrity on the portal.

Community, Diversity & Inclusivity After organizing the think-tank group ‘We Are the Academy’ last year, beginning of 2020 a Diversity and Inclusion Working Group has been installed. The working group consists out of students, teachers, and staff. Purpose of the working group is to facilitate discussion on the very many topics concerning diversity and inclusion within the learning community of KABK, organize symposium, seminars, discussion groups on topics of diversity and inclusion, facilitate grassroots initiatives by students, teachers, and staff members. Siela Ardjosemito diversity officer at the University of the Arts. Siela is here to help both the KABK and KC. Siela can be reached via s.ardjosemito@hdkdenhaag.nl. Read more about the diversity workgroup on the portal.

Studying with a disability or chronic physical or mental-emotional condition At the KABK we believe that every student who has been admitted to the programme of their choice must be able to participate. Also, when the student has a disability or a chronic physical or mental-emotional condition. The KABK wants the focus to be on what the student can do and wants to do, rather than on their limitations. For students with a disability or a chronic condition, we will look for a tailor-made solution as much as possible, within what are called ‘the boundaries of reasonability and fairness’. We do so by considering the student's personal situation and the possibilities offered by the academy. This process requires both common sense and creative thinking. It is therefore especially important for students with a disability to tell the student counsellor about the nature of their disability at the start of their programme. Find more information on the topic of studying with a disability or chronic physical or mental-emotional condition on the portal.

Academy Wide Education (Individual Study Track (IST), Studium Generale and Research and Discourse) In addition to departmental programmes, bachelor students participate in academy-wide courses. From the first year

onwards, collaboration between students from different departments and disciplines is therefore actively encouraged. Courses and subjects that are offered at an academy-wide level are the Individual Study Track (IST), Research & Discourse, Propaedeutic Project Week and Studium Generale. If you have any questions regarding the academy wide education, you can contact coordinator Liza Swaving via l.swaving@kabk.nl. Find more information on the portal. Applications at KABK At KABK we make use of several applications which you should be aware of during your study. Below we give a small introduction into these applications:

ASIMUT

Academy Wide Education

Asimut The KABK uses a scheduling system called ASIMUT. This program offers you a personal schedule and the possibility to book rooms and make reservations for workshops. ASIMUT is an online application, so you can access it anywhere with your KABK account. To check your timetable, you need to log in to ASIMUT using your KABK account and password. You can also add your schedule to the calendar on your smartphone or tablet. MS Teams Since February 2020 the KABK makes use of Microsoft Teams. Microsoft Teams is on the one hand a 'virtual classroom' application that allows for communication, collaboration, file-sharing, class meetings and class assignments. In this scenario you will be added to a class team. On the other hand, you can use Teams to communicate (chat or video-calling) with the staff, teachers, and fellow students of the KABK outside of a class team. There are even some public teams specifically designed for social contact. Contact information of the KABK teachers and students is already synced within Teams so you can get started right away. If you have any questions, please contact ict@hdkdenhaag.nl. More information can be found on the portal.

Surfspot Surf Spot is the IT shop where students from the KABK can buy official software and other ICT products at very low prices. Choose Login for MBO, HBO and WO and search for ‘Royal Academy of Art' and log in with your student number@kabk.nl and password. You can ask question regarding software in the service desk of the Computer Workshop. Scan the QR code to go to the website of Surf Spot.

Surfspot

Workshops The KABK has 15 workshops dispersed over the entire building. All students are allowed to use all workshops. The machinery and workshops are state of the art. Operating the machinery can be dangerous and complex. That is why the KABK offers short courses in using the machinery safely and properly and in getting the most out of it. If required, the workshop staff will provide personal protective gear, such as safety shoes in a variety of sizes, safety goggles, hearing protection, welding gloves and masks, etcetera. Please check the Portal for courses, the available machinery and other information.

External workshop network Next to our own specialised instructors and workshops you have access to an even wider variety of industry standard tools, which expand the possibilities offered by the academy's own workshop facilities. As a student of the KABK you might get 50% discount when using technical support in any of the companies within our external workshop facilities network. Our workshop instructors are eager to help you with your projects but sometimes you might need a different technique or bigger machinery to realise your artistic ideas and design concepts. For these occasions and when it is too busy at the academy's own facilities, you can make use of this network. If you need a company outside the mentioned network, please contact Bart Vissers (Head of Technical Services) to discuss your proposal. Check out the overview with our external workshop network on the portal.

Student led initiatives Real Live platform Real:Live <in real time> is a digital space for the KABK community, to host and gather student-led initiatives online, and was started in times of social distance. Arising from a need of a centralised and active space to nurture a sense of togetherness and family, here you can find a collection of initiatives, actions, parties, and exhibitions, made by the KABK students. Apart from informal gatherings, Real:Live is also a space where it’s possible to organise an event or workshop, a yoga class or cooking session, and even a week-long programme. The possibilities are infinite! Follow us on Instagram @thereal_livegallery! Drop an email to reallive@kabk.nl and share your ideas so we can get started! Mushroom Radio The radio station, initiated by KABK alumni Jack Bardwell, Benjamin Earl and Esther Vane was set up as a research tool that eventually developed into a platform for students to use and discuss topics as they will, recent years they have also had an active role during the KABK Graduation show. Radio Mushroom is open for collaboration on any occasion, simply send them a message! Follow them on Instagram via @mushroomradio

32

Queer KABK The KABK finds it important to be a diverse and inclusive institution, however improvements can always be made. Although gender and sexuality are expansive subjects that could be studied for years, Queer KABK has created an easy and accessible resource that we feel could improve the environment of the academy. We hope that the student body and faculty of the school can take advantage of the information we share and apply it to their everyday interactions. Find Queer KABK on Instagram: @queerkabk

Health Care The Dutch general practitioner (GP) or family doctor (huisarts) is the main link to any specialist or hospital. Students are advised to choose a family doctor practicing in their neighbourhood and to inquire whether the GP can take you as a new patient, even before they need to see one. Please note that not all doctors are able to take new patients! If necessary, the family doctor will give a prescription. Strong medicines are only available on prescription and are prepared at a pharmacy (apotheek). Chemists (Drogisterij) sell ‘over the counter’ medicines, such as aspirin and cough medicine. It is important to register with a GP when you arrive in the Netherlands. You need a health insurance to make use of a GP.

34

Dentist

Healthcare

GP If you live in The Hague, you can register for free with StudentDoc. Students are not bound by zip code area restrictions! To search for a local doctor, go to the ZorgkaartNederland website (in Dutch) and enter your postal code. More information and useful links can be found on the portal.

Dentist A GP does not have knowledge regarding dental problems. Dental care is privatised in the Netherlands. It is not covered by basic insurance policies (except for children under 18 and specialist dental care, such as surgery). So please check the conditions of your health insurance before you make an appointment. If you are not insured for dental care, you will need to pay the dental bill on the spot. Most Dutch dentists (tandarts) work in their own single-dentist practice. There are many dentists all over the city. You are free to choose your own dentist. Several practices have dentists who speak English and other foreign languages. In case of emergency in evenings or weekends, you can contact the Dentist Intermediate Office. Try the website tandarts.nl to search for a conveniently located dentist.

GGD

Corona test

Municipal Medical and Health Care Service (GGD) The GGD monitors, protects, and promotes public health in the municipalities of the Haaglanden region. Please contact them for tests and vaccination procedures when living in the Haaglanden region. For any general questions on health and health care, you can contact your Municipal Medical and Health Care Service (Gemeentelijke Geneeskundige en Gezondheidsdienst, www.ggd.nl), also called the GGD for short. Want to book a Covid-19 test or plan a vaccination? Scan the bottom left QR-Code.

The Hague

The Hague Housing The KABK is not situated in a campus and does not have university-owned accommodation. Students are required to ensure their own housing and are responsible for arranging accommodation themselves. Despite the housing shortage, a wide range of rooms and apartments is offered in The Hague by private individuals and organisations. On the portal we’ve created an overview with helpful information for finding accommodation in The Hague. We also strongly advise you to look at the website Study in The Hague where many more tips regarding housing are listed.

Public Transport

Find housing

Housing Tips

Public Transport Public transport in the Netherlands is well organised. But if you are new, you might need some extra tips. There are many ways to get around in The Hague. You can go on foot or by bike, but public transport is an easy way to get from A to B. Public transport possibilities in The Hague include the bus, tram, and metro and everywhere you can pay with an OV-chipcard. And let's not forget one of the most popular means of transport in the Netherlands: cycling. So, we recommend you buy a second hand or new bike asap! Remember to don’t drink and drive, even with a bike.

37

Student OV-chipcard The student OV-chipcard is a big perk that Dutch students can make use of when studying. If you are a working student from another EU country and you receive student finance (tuition fee loan) from the Dutch government, you are also entitled to a student OV-chipkaart. It allows you to travel free of charge by any form of public transport (train, tram, metro and bus). For more information about the OV-chipcard you can scan the QR Code. Studying in the Hague The Hague proudly carries the title "international city of peace and justice". With the presence of king, government, international courts, embassies and international companies, The Hague has a great international reputation. If you choose The Hague, you choose top education in a city where you will find a unique combination of serious and fun. Find more information about the Hague on the portal. Working in the Netherlands It might be that you’ll have to work alongside your studies. To supplement your income, put your studies into practice, learn new skills or meet new people. If you want to work during your studies, you should keep in mind that there are some formalities you need to take care of.

38

Studying in The Hague

OV-Chipkaart

If you are an international student and you want to work in addition to your studies, you need to have a work permit

(TWV - tewerkstellingsvergunning), unless you are from the EU, EEA, or Switzerland. Keep in mind that your employer will need to apply for the TWV (work permit) and that you make a commitment to each other when starting this process. When you receive a work permit, you can work for 16 hours a week throughout the year, or full-time during the summer months June, July, and August. Sometimes, having a part-time job may mean that you need to switch to a higher insurance plan since you are not a national. Make sure to check whether it is worth the effort and money to switch plans; it may very well be that it is more profitable for you to not be employed while you are studying in The Hague. Your student grant may also not allow you to earn additional money.

Working during your studies

There are several student work agencies to help you find a job in The Hague. While their websites are primarily in Dutch, it is worth stopping by at their office or giving them a call to see if they have opportunities for you. You can find a list of work agencies on the portal.

Museum Card It is highly advisable to purchase a Museum Card, because it gives you free access to over 400 museums in the Netherlands. If you are younger than 18, you pay a reduced fee. The easiest way to obtain the card is to visit one of the big museums in The Hague but you can also order one online. You can buy a card that is valid for one year or you can take out a subscription that extends your museum card automatically after one year.
