Foreword Dear visitor, Welcome to the KABK Graduation Show; the annual exhibition where our graduates from seven Bachelor’s and seven Master’s programmes present their final work. This exhibition marks both the end of their studies and the beginning of a professional career. At the KABK, students are educated to become independent and selfconfident artists and designers who combine an inquisitive mindset with conceptual and visual ability. The aim is for students to graduate with authentic work that plays a meaningful role in their discipline and in society. Above all, the graduation work is the result of a multi-year intensively supervised development process. This year, more than 240 graduates reflect with their projects on current social themes such as artificial intelligence, identity, climate change and sustainability. Allow yourself to be inspired, amazed and surprised and above all enjoy the work of this young and ambitious talent.
Ranti Tjan, Director Royal Academy of Art

ArtScience Interfaculty is situated inbetween the Royal Academy of Art and the Royal Conservatoire, and fosters curiosity driven research as an approach for the making of art. We are very proud of this year’s graduating students from the ArtScience Master and Bachelor programmes. The past two years of their studies, during the covid crisis, were not easy. Yet they managed to stay optimistic, now culminating in a great and very diverse collection of projects. All our graduates make very personal work while showing their collective spirit. Their works focus on more senses than just the visual and aural, creating new worlds and experiences. They modulate from the bodily to the digital, and from the natural to the social. There are moments to laugh and moments to contemplate. But in all this variety, we sense a general urge that it is possible to influence the future. We know they can, and wish them their great future!

Fine Arts Bachelor
It is our sincere pleasure to welcome you to the 2022 Graduation Show featuring works and projects of our BA Fine Arts students. During their studies, this generation of graduates have experienced challenges that have required their creative input and approach. With the outbreak of the COVID-19-pandemic in March 2020 and the resulting lockdowns, the romantic myth of the reclusive artist working in solitude, became a palpable reality. Our graduates have strived to adjust to a new and challenging working reality: that artists must work with, and not against the uncertainty of these times. It should not come as a surprise that the resulting works from this graduating year confront us for example with pointed investigation into scale the space; installations which focus on sound as voice and projects that address the many diversities and identities we have inside of us. Amongst all the projects and works are also dreams, which ask for a strong will, hard work, endurance, and last but not least also a bit of luck to come to realisation. Artistic practice is and always has been a challenge of our times, and this generation proves it’s continued resonance. I wish you a pleasant as well as a thoughtful journey through this year’s Graduation Show!

Onwards Movement is never a straightforward line. Rather, it is spiralling, fluttering, squirming stories of us from the past, that ignite our movement towards the future – from what we thought we were, from what we thought we wanted to be, to what we are becoming. Growing into our knowledge, growing within ourselves, we take steps forwards, sideways, back, and around. Onwards. We are thirty-two graduating graphic design students of the year 2022 who are grateful to have you with us. Enticing you to experience our perspective of contemporary discourses - from ethics of technology to future of work to ecological urgencies - we hope you will be touched, surprised, challenged, but inspired, nevertheless. Besides the works within the department, four projects are installed at other locations throughout the KABK building. You are welcome to revisit the exhibition online and get in touch with us at onwards.kabk.nl

You traverse through a mirage of blue and orange. 128m2 of shared grounds. An invitation to listen and embrace others as we do ourselves.
60m2 of disruption. Providing a safe haven for the ones that fail to navigate public space.
96m2 of disturbance. Creating a narrative around collectivity and individuality.
256m2 of sanctity. A manifestation of lucid dreams and sudden distortion.
18m2 of turbulence. Reawakening the skin of the inattentive passer-by. Welcome to our home. We are 15 graduating students of the Interior Architecture and Furniture Design department at KABK Den Haag (Royal Academy of Art The Hague). ROOM NOT FOUND is based on the concept of ‘the home’ as an informal and personalised manifestation of unknown spaces for familiar thoughts.

Do you have a keen interest in the impact of media that now affect every aspect of our lives and our natural environment, both positively and negatively? Do you have strong social awareness and feel the urgency to act? At I/M/D you will learn to use technology to design interventions that can influence and change our society for the better. You will explore the interaction between people, machines, nature and cultures – and will work to improve them. You will not only be taught the professional skills to work in the Creative Industries but, you will also develop a strong design identity, founded on critical discourse. I/M/D graduates create the professional fields of the future by combining disciplines such as design, art and technology in sectors ranging from environmental protection and education to film and serious gaming. Our graduates often pursue careers in design agencies, media labs or NGOs or start their own creative businesses.

Photography Bachelor
A few decades ago, the making of a photograph was mainly reserved for professionals and a few wealthy amateurs. Today, more than 100 million new photos are being uploaded to the Internet every day. The question is whether ‘photographers’ still have anything to add to this visual information overload. The medium of photography is undergoing rapid change. At the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague (KABK) we find it extremely exciting to see new ways to engage with the medium. Our students learn to invent their own paths and be an author. What is the story you would like to tell? Apart from being creative in the field of making work, you also need to consider your audience and find sustainable ways for your practice. The final-year cohort of the photography department reveals a superbly eclectic mix of photography expression, nurturing diverse photography thinking, questions of relevance and urgencies. What they all have in common is their deep-rooted ambition to communicate and to share. They make their own decisions, have articulated strong positions and, through this, prove that they are ready to take their place in the world.

Textile & Fashion Bachelor
The Textile & Fashion department has a unique and distinctive profile, offering two disciplines simultaneously within one and the same department creates a unique profile in design education. By embracing their interdependence and possibilities in overlap this provides opportunities for the development of versatile transdisciplinary practices. Our graduates have been educated to recognize and develop their own authentic talent and personal vision on Textile and Fashion design. Their in-depth research and practical skills developed over the past years have prepared them to become relevant in the field of Textile and Fashion design, reflecting and shaping the spirit of time. Combining artistic with theoretical research, students are encouraged to develop a very personal and critical point of view when designing solutions for rapidly evolving realities that are becoming more and more aware of their contemporary socio-political, economic and cultural responsibilities, resulting in highly authentic and tactile projects and collections rich of experimental materials and shape.

Non Linear Narrative Master The Non Linear Narrative master programme at the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) merges investigative methods of journalism and forensics with processing technologies of computer science and visual arts into a contemporary, progressive design approach: the non-linear storytelling. It takes the entanglement of relations in the global information society as a starting point, in order to identify and interrogate complex socio-political issues and communicate them to a broad audience. The programme repositions the graphic design discipline in the changing professional landscape and extends it with new responsibilities towards society. This year’s graduation show presents under the title Please Elaborate, the final projects of 12 young and emerging designers. To elaborate means ( ) to interpret, to experiment, to comment, to expand, to develop, to work out, to compare, to amplify, to improve, to enlarge, to complicate, to specify... Spanning a range of media, exhibition formats and disciplines, the showpieces cover a multitude of subjects in order to unravel and demonstrate their complexities. As such, Please Elaborate is not only the title of the exhibition, but also the question the recent graduates often asked themselves in the process of making their works. In doing so, they responded with thoughtful and engaging comments to contemporary issues of gender equality, post-truth politics, sound pollution, global warming and neurodiversity. If you aren’t able to see the show in person, the exhibition will be also translated into a digital experience on nln.allinthistogether. online and a series of video interviews. Stay tuned via nln.kabk.nl.

MID is proud to show you this year’s graduates’ designs during the KABK Graduation Show. Each of these projects is based on meticulous and passionate design research, which resulted in distinct and outstanding designs. Courageous in subject, they deal with complex as well as topical issues: from crafting desire to using design to create long lasting relations between users and their products, from energy transition to the capabilities of computational design in dealing with construction waste as well as the importance of un-learning botanical narratives in facing the ecological challenges of today. The variety in design projects is testimony to our department’s versatility and of our 2022 graduates.

Interior Architecture Master
INSIDE is a two-year master’s programme for designers of spatial change who start each assignment with a broad exploration of the context. Central to our education is the notion that the intrinsic expertise of the interior architect lies in the relationship that people, as users, have with their immediate living environment. In this relationship, a number of values, such as sustainability and the concept of inclusiveness, have become more prominent. These values have a direct relationship with the urgent social and cultural tasks in the built environment. As a result, we see that the role of the interior architect is slowly growing out of the physical interior and is becoming relevant in the most diverse places where people come together, and communities arise. Whether those places are actually interior or even purely physical is much less important than the way the designers position themselves within these places as curators of spatial change. INSIDE presents 10 graduating students who, throughout their studies, have been extra challenged by the constraints of the pandemic. They turned out to be a group that could cope with the constraints and still manage to manifest themselves. The awareness of the great importance of the human encounter in the built environment is reflected in almost all the graduation projects.

What you see are the results of twelve students’ year-long journey of making, reflecting, producing and evaluating. All of them have been engaging in what we at MAPS like to refer to as an ‘undisciplined photography.’ That is, what you see as part of the graduation festival are twelve “storiesso-far,” to paraphrase the geographer Doreen Massey. For us, photography is not in stasis, but can be understood as a “doing,” where it is dynamic and constantly in the process of being made, a participant within a broader constellation of forces that proposes an alternative to the linear, neoliberal trajectory that we live in today. A story-so-far is a discovery of other stories, and what they tell us, allows us to build a political argument. That’s because they intersect with a multiplicity of stories. At MAPS, we want to dare to imagine other worlds. To provide scenarios and possibilities of how something else can emerge and work against the illusion of linear progress.

Type and Media Master
The Master TypeMedia at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague (KABK) is a one-year programme that delves into type design and typography for different contexts including print, screens and interactive media. Unique to the course is its small size. Students will work intensively in a group of no more than 12 under the guidance of experts and teachers from the KABK and abroad. Discussions with leading type designers, typographers and graphic designers provide theoretical depth. Excursions to select research libraries, special collections and conferences ensure engagement with the professional field. Students explore every aspect of letterforms: contrast, rhythm, proportion and weight as well as font technology, digitising and tool development. The programme is constructed to produce expert designers with a thorough knowledge of, and pronounced affinity with, type and typography.
