“Mythology is not a lie, mythology is poetry, it is metaphorical. It has been well said that mythology is the penultimate truth--penultimate because the ultimate cannot be put into words. It is beyond words. Beyond images, beyond that bounding rim of the Buddhist Wheel of Becoming. Mythology pitches the mind beyond that rim, to what can be known but not told.” Joseph Campbell, “The power of Myth”

VEDRA
Standing at almost 400 metres high, this uninhabited rock island made of limestone is situated 2km off the west coast of Ibiza, in the Cala d’Hort area. Es Vedra consists of mesozoic linestone and many myth surrounds the island. The island is a result of geological tumble by the continous seismic movement in the earths crust which caused great shift in the Betica Mountain Range 155 million years ago. The island has no human inhabitats, however a Carmelite Friar goes by the name of Francis Palau y Quer has once lived here following his exile from Ctalonia in 1855. The only habitants are wild goat, ibizan wall lizard and endangered bird of prey called Eleanora’s Falcon.

ES VEDRA VIEW POINT During my visit in Ibiza , I have travel around the Island to gather information regards the viewpoint of Es Vedra. As I have some idea about the seen and the unseen part of Es Vedra to form my speculative idea of what might have been going on in the unseen part of Es Vedra. The following viewpoint that I have visited are: IBIZA - Cala d’Hort viewing Platform - Cala d’Hort beach - Torre De Savinar - Atlantis ( Lost City) FORMENTERA - Cala Savinar - Es Moll de Sal From these I have manage to figure out the unseen part of Es Vedra which are the SouthWest part of the Island. I would like to use these unseen part within my design and further investigate the area to find a good solution to the island.

ES VEDRA MYTHOLOGY Es Vedra is a mythical island with a strong magnetic field thus it is virtually impossible to get direct compass reading in the vicinity of Es Vedra. As a result of strong magnetic field, Es Vedra become one of the most magnetic spot on the globe. Navigation instruments are known to go haywire and flock of pigeons often loose their sense of direction. It is also said that Es Vedra is the tip of the long lost sunken civilisation of Atlantis. As Es Vedra is located opposite the natural cave of Atlantis.

“AS THE RESULT OF THE MODERN TECHNOLOGY ,WHAT WE HAVE TODAY IS A DEMYTHOLOGISED WORLD. Is no mystery to be left to us? Technology has gradually deprived us of our dreams - even as it explosed them. Myth often been told during the story teller process and passed on from generation thus there are no confirmation for us to certify it validate. Now then the modern technology has immense grow , the myth then slowly fades along with it. The need for some sort of belief blurred the boundaries between reality and imagination. Now that Google has the world all mapped and there are surveillance cameras recording every walking, waking moment of our lives, perhaps we need our fairies and dragons and ghosts more than ever.
Now that Google has the world all mapped and there are surveillance cameras recording every walking, waking moment of our lives, perhaps we need our fairies and dragons and ghosts more than ever. Hence the popularity of science fiction and fantasy, from Alien to Harry Potter, Doctor Who and Game of Thrones. As the natural world is analysed and even altered irrevocably by our rampant progress, we seem keener than ever to believe in myth, rather than rational science.

Myths contribute to our lives in at least four ways: they give us a sense of who we are they make possible our loyalties to communal groups they support our moral values they address the mysteries of creation and creativity Traditional society regulated itself socially, politically, ethically, morally via myths. The myth unites the antinomies of life: conscious (c) and unconscious (u), historical and present, individual and social.
Every society has its own form of myths, and interestingly, often these different myths are re-tellings of central archetypal stories that are changed slightly to fit different cultures and experiences.
Mythology is simply another page in the novel of mankind. All the pages are important. We are the culmination of those pages and many, many others.
The popularity of myths and the way that they are still read and studied just as much today suggests very strongly that myths are much more than just stories, and that they have an important purpose in today’s world, just as they were important in ancient civilisations. Myths can be described as sacred tales that help man understand the world and his place in it

The government lied. What does it mean to live under a government that lies to you? Is the war just, moral, and necessary? You cannot know for certain under a government that lies to you. Are taxes legal and fair? You cannot know for certain under a government that lies to you. Is the public money being spent wholly on the public? You cannot know for certain under a government that lies to you. Are you really free? You cannot know for certain under a government that lies to you. Is life in this nation really better than anywhere else? You cannot know for certain under a government that lies to you. When you live under a government that lies, you cannot know anything for certain about your lives. All you can know is what you are told.

“Myth basically serves four functions. The first is the mystical function,... realizing what a wonder the universe is, and what a wonder you are, and experiencing awe before this mystery....The second is a cosmological dimension, the dimension with which science is concerned – showing you what shape the universe is, but showing it in such a way that the mystery again comes through.... The third function is the sociological one – supporting and validating a certain social order.... It is the sociological function of myth that has taken over in our world – and it is out of date.... But there is a fourth function of myth, and this is the one that I think everyone must try today to relate to – and that is the pedagogical function, of how to live a human lifetime under any circumstances.” Joseph Campbell, “The power of Myth”
