Love of ceramics

WELCOME TO KÄHLER’S HISTORICAL UNIVERSE 2016 With this collection, we embark on a new chapter in the sensuous story about Kähler’s universe. We have collected a range of products that, in our opinion, reflect Kähler’s values in the finest way – both with reference to our more than 175-year-old history and the new design classics and and product categories. In spring 2015, Kähler presented the new Hammershøi tableware. Since then, the tableware has developed, and many new elements have been added, including beautiful vases and candle holders as well as new design products for the table, all of which have the elegant grooves in common. The entire Hammershøi series is inspired by artist Svend Hammershøi who for many years worked for Kähler’s old workshop in Næstved. Kähler continues its more than 175-year-old tradition of collaborating with contemporary, outstanding designers. This year, we launch our new partnership with award-winning designer Cecilie Manz in the form of the minimalistic and exclusive Kaolin tableware. Here, cool steel meets the beautiful and translucent bone china which has a unique, warm glow and a clean white colour. Also tree, leather and exclusive textiles are combined with ceramic in this collection, and brand new and exciting material compositions are created. With this collection, Kähler presents not only a range of design classics that have been given new life with new colours and new forms but also a large selection of new product categories made for the home of design lovers.

It is our hope that you will give this year’s collection a warm welcome. All the best from all of us at Kähler

Then and now

KÄHLER DESIGN The story about Kähler began in 1839, when the Holstein potter Herman J. Kähler opened a small ceramics workshop in the city of Næstved. However, it was not until his son, Herman A. Kähler, took over the workshop in 1875 that the ceramics adventure gathered speed. With production of international art ceramics, the foundation was laid for one of the great success stories in Danish ceramics. History and traditions are well-preserved in every single handmade and modern design; today still a very large part of the lives of many. The reason is that Kähler is an unavoidable part of Danish cultural heritage, but also one of Scandinavia’s most innovative brands, which combines an authentic story with modern design product, strong cooperation with the most skilled designers and Nordic restaurant experiences. At Kähler, we aim every day at uniting our unique cultural heritage with our ambition to be a leader on the ceramic arts scene, both nationally and internationally. We pick the best from an artistic ceramic heri-tage and interpret it in a contemporary light. The result is budding new ceramics, appealing to a broad audience in a timeless idiom, but individually interpreted.

Exceptional design

HAMMERSHØI BRINGS TOGETHER KÄHLER IN THE PAST AND PRESENT Svend Hammershøi was a world-renowned artist attached to Kähler’s workshop from the late 19th century. His works for Kähler won fame far beyond the borders of Denmark and can still be seen at museums around the world. Hammershøi was particularly known for his large, voluminous vases with distinct furrows and beautiful profiles, which he liked to cut by hand. Hammershøi was of unique importance to Kähler. He was the artist attached to Kähler’s workshop for the longest time and his works were produced in the greatest number reaching out to the whole world. Again today, Kähler’s ceramics come with Hammershøi’s hand-carved profiles. The new Hammershøi tableware by outstanding designer Hans-Christian Bauer is based on Hammershøi’s characteristic red clay vases and reinterprets the deep carvings, which on the tableware appear as discrete and elegant on the ceramics. In this way, Hans-Christian Bauer brings together Kähler’s past and present and has created tableware that is so timeless and elegant that it can be used for a lifetime. Hammershøi from Kähler is an elegant range of tableware and beautiful vases and candle holders.

HAMMERSHØI TABLEWARE DESIGN HANS-CHRISTIAN BAUER

Kähler passes on a true cultural treasure and turns it into modern and contemporary tableware. The Hammershøi tableware is elegant and simple design tableware with fine historical details in natural, Nordic materials: ceramic, oak, steel and glass. The beautiful Hammershøi tableware comes with decorative furrows, giving it a classic look and letting the glaze flow elegantly and slightly transparently across the vivid ceramics. The subtle furrows also have a functional advantage and make the cups good to hold and the storage jars easy to open. The stunning tableware is lifted a trifle from the table so that the ceramics appear stable and have a light hovering elegance, and, in combination with the natural colours – white, coral, anthracite, sky and marble – the individual elements turn into small design wonders in themselves. The tableware is perfect for a well-set Sunday brunch table or delicious dinner where the elements will offer the most fantastic and stylistic backdrop to the colourful raw materials.

HAMMERSHØI VASES AND CANDLE HOLDERS DESIGN HANS-CHRISTIAN BAUER

The distinctive Hammershøi furrows have already won over many design lovers in Scandinavia, and now the historic furrows have moved from the dinner table to the rest of the home. The Hammershøi range comprises four vases, which at one and the same time have a timeless and modern idiom. The four design vases have a sharp, clean and simple design which gives the vases a modern and stylish look. The vases have a delicate, little collar around the neck which, together with the furrows and the vases’ harmonious idiom, naturally elongates fresh flowers so that they become one with the ceramic. The history of the Kähler design vases is unique, which adds further authenticity and personality to the entire Hammershøi collection. The vases are directly inspired by world-renowned artist Svend Hammershøi’s distinctive vases, which he created at the old Kähler workshop in Næstved at the beginning of the 20th century. In the same collection, together with the designer behind the Hammershøi range, Hans-Christian Bauer, Kähler has created four elegant and evocative candle holders, all with an unpretentious, individual and stylish look in subdued Nordic colours. The four candle holders feature, like the vases, the distinctive Hammershøi furrows which bind the range together across colour, shape, material and function.

Omaggio

ICONIC DESIGN VASE WITH A HISTORY The Omaggio series is a modern design classic. The iconic stripes are represented in countless Nordic homes and loved by design enthusiasts all over the world. However, not many people know that the iconic Omaggio vase is in fact an interpretation of the historical Kähler vases from the early and mid 20th century. The modern Omaggio vase was inspired by Tulle Emborg, one of the talented women painters in Kähler’s workshop in the 1930s and 1940s. The Omaggio vase continues some of the handicraft traditions that have been characterising Kähler for more than 175 years. As in the old Kähler workshop, each and every stripe on every single Omaggio vase has been hand-painted by talented women painters, and the Omaggio vases then go through multiple hand processes in connection with glazing, quality checking and fine-polishing. In this way, your Omaggio vase is not only a modern design icon, but also a piece of Nordic cultural history and a unique and powerful reflection of today, which has been reinterpreted and revived by the talented designer duo Stilleben.

OMAGGIO PEARL DESIGN JELENA SCHOU NORDENTOFT AND DITTE RECKWEG

This spring, Omaggio by Danish design duo Stilleben will come in a brand new and surprising look: a pure pearlescent shade. The discrete colour offers a warm comment to the ceramics and becomes an elegant interpretation of the classic, colourful Omaggio vase. The pearlescent shade creates a stunning, understated tone-on-tone look, which matches elegantly with any stylish décor where the new Omaggio vase merges elegantly with your other interior. The new Omaggio colour is inspired by Nordic nature where the mother-of-pearl at the inside of shells decorates the Scandinavian coastlines and is the fine treasure we bring home from the first spring strolls along the beach. Let the simple and shiny Omaggio vase be a unique herald of spring which brings light and joy to the home together with fresh and colourful spring flowers.

A tribute to history and craftsmanship

HANDMADE QUALITY AND UNIQUE DETAILS Every single piece of contemporary Kähler design is a tribute to Kähler’s unique history and a celebration of the well-preserved craftsmanship, but also a strong impression of the present. The ceramic designs are still handmade as when Kähler embarked on its adventure in 1839. Just like the women painters decorated the ceramics by hand with cow’s horns at the old Kählersbakken more than one hundred years ago, every single graceful glaze and colour are still meticulously made by adhering to Kähler’s ceramic craftsmanship traditions. Even in this day of age, the Omaggio vase is still being hand painted by gentle brush strokes, after which it is glazed, quality-checked and fine-polished to become a beautiful useful piece in the end, while keeping that little detail that makes every single piece of Kähler design unique. When buying Kähler’s design, you thus take home a piece of handmade cultural heritage with a personal look and historical details.

UNICO DESIGN ANDERS ARHØJ

Unico is a range of entirely unique, ceramic design products, which playfully and invitingly challenge our common perception of art versus utilitarian objects. The Unico range comprises two sculptural vases, a flowerpot, a bowl, an elegant dish and a decorative floor vase. The hallmark of the Unico range is a dense, colourful glaze. Its simple decorative effect creates an exciting contrast with the light ceramic. The glaze spreads naturally, densely and randomly over the ceramic, culminating like a heavy drop, suspended in time with a beautiful, three-dimensional depth. All elements in the range have their own personality, adding colourful character to any room they decorate. Turn this unique, decorative Unico range into your home’s very own little art collection, a testament to proud traditions of craftsmanship and a clear, confident style.

ORA WALL CLOCK DESIGN JONAS TRAMPEDACH AND BIRGITTE DUE MADSEN

When the Ora clock hangs on your wall, you can enjoy watching the convex numbers that cast discrete shadows round the edge of the clock every day. The contrast between the ceramics and the plexiglass hands gives the simple wall clock an edge and a modern design. The stringent and modern appearance is free of unnecessary details – precisely because the purpose is to make Ora a functional and stylish useful object. The purity characterising the design blurs the traditional boundary between what is masculine and what is feminine. So you will see that Ora has a sculptural element that appeals to both genders and makes the clock not just a practical useful object on the wall, but blends in as part of your personal interior design and décor. With the colours pale rose and pigeon blue, Kähler has reinvented the look to create a meeting between the stylish and classic idiom and the two modern, almost pop colours.

ORA TABLE CLOCK DESIGN JONAS TRAMPEDACH AND BIRGITTE DUE MADSEN

The small Ora table clock has inherited its stringent and stylish look from the popular wall clocks in the same series, but this design gem surprises with its shape and volume. Ora’s surface is classically circular, but the clock has much more to offer with its discrete incline and elegant round figure, which gives the table clock body a more vibrant appearance. Accompanied by the black/white look, the clock becomes a cool and graphical useful object that matches any home, and with the pale rose and pigeon blue, the table clock is given soul and a modern idiom that serves as an elegant and colourful comment to the other interior. Use the Ora table clock as a decorative piece in your home office, a true design icon in your kitchen or a surprisingly elegant useful object in your living room.

FIDUCIA DESIGN LOUISE CAMPBELL

Fiducia rethinks the vase and candlestick into a stylistically intriguing and experimental design object where the individual elements can be combined in various ways by means of the magnets placed in their little “arms”. The design is clean, simple and strong and therefore perfectly matches the modern home. Fiducia’s design is characterised by slightly bulky and naive shapes reminiscent of the charming tumblers. The playful idiom makes Fiducia a delight to the eye when filled with candles and the flowers of the season – regardless of whether they have their permanent place on the window sill or you use them as part of your table setting for special occasions. Fiducia is the Italian word for trust – and that is how it is with these vases and candlesticks: They belong together as a family and cannot stand on their own. They almost appear to float when they are on the table because of their special design.

STORIES OF EVE DESIGN LOUISE HINDSGAVL

For a long time we have focused on furniture and small interior design items when we invest in our home, but now there is a need for personal stories with all their quirks to fill your home. Once again, we have room for items that do not serve a practical purpose but which satisfies our desire for decorative items, for art that provokes and puts cultural radicalism back on the agenda. Historically, K채hler has been known for its figurines. And a cooperation with the artist and ceramist Louise Hindsgavl has pulled this somewhat forgotten tradition into the spotlight again in a fine balance between contemporary trends and the always titillating provocations of art. Moreover, K채hler has a vision to make art accessible also when it comes to price. The three figurines aremade as numbered, one-of-a-kind objects in glazed porcelain.

The vase catches the eye with the extremely exciting dynamics between the warm and bright words and its raw and natural material. The beautiful Love Song vases with natural, Nordic and contemporary colours give the songs a brand new sound and create an exciting interplay between text, colour and material. The raw and unglazed surface is elegantly offset by a transparent glaze on the inside. The vases are perfect both in tableaux and on their own. The Globo candlestick makes a warm and strong statement and matches both the simple and more colourful home with its stringent and defined shape. Globo is created in harmonious and calm earth tones, granite grey and terracotta which are reminiscent of the warm colour scale of fallen leaves and sculptural pebbles on the floor of the Nordic autumn forest. The various sizes and natural warm colours of the candlesticks add a special feel to your home depending on where you use them. The largest of the design candlesticks will give your hallway soul and add a welcoming warmth when placed on the floor. You can also use them as a stylish table decoration on a clean wooden table or as a contemporary advent candlestick. The small candlesticks can be put together to form an elegant and homey tableau on the window sill or on the coffee table.

KAOLIN DESIGN CECILIE MANZ

In partnership with award-winning and acclaimed Danish designer Cecilie Manz, K채hler presents a range of tableware with amazing qualities and an intriguing composition of materials. The idiom of the Kaolin tableware is Nordic minimalism with clean lines softened by a feminine touch and a discreet waistline on each product. The bone china is what makes the Kaolin tableware special, with its unique, warm glow, a translucent look and a particular crispness and strength in the natural material. The white china is contrasted by an entirely new material in the K채hler universe: high-polished, stainless steel. The stringent and raw steel elements add character and personality to the tableware and become a bold contrast to the warm and vivid materials: wood and china. The Kaolin tableware is made for the modern design lover with an eye for quality and appreciation of exclusive and exquisite world-class Danish design.

World-famous designs

MEET KÄHLER’S TALENTED DESIGNERS Up through the 19th and 20th centuries, the historical Kähler workshop was the rendezvous point for many of the all-time greatest Danish artists such as Thorvald Bindesbøll and Kai Nielsen not to mention Svend Hammershøi, whose world-famous designs still today lend inspiration to Kähler’s modern design. It is Kähler’s great ambition and pleasure to be able to continue the more than 175-year-old tradition of working together with contemporary, most outstanding and talented artists, ceramists and designers. Ceramist Jeanette List Amstrup, the designer duo Stilleben and artist Louise Hindsgavl are behind some of Kähler’s most popular and innovative products, and, every year, new skilled design talents are invited to join the Kähler fairytale. Award-winning designer Cecilie Manz is behind the new Kaolin tableware that reflects the essence of her popular designs. Each individual designer gives his or her own personal touch to Kähler’s overall look, and that is part of what makes Kähler’s ceramic universe so unique.

BOTANICA DESIGN METTE BACHE AND BARBARA BENDIX BECKER

The beautiful, voluminous Botanica series in faience is designed for the modern home. It is a series of ceramics which balances functionality and aesthetics in the wondrous world of ceramics. Historically, K채hler is recognised for its work with glazes and colours, and these craftsmanship and aesthetic qualities still shine through the entire Botanica series. With their Nordic and transparent colour universe, the beautiful Botanica vases have won wide popularity and found their way into many homes. The exquisitely dusty and almost enigmatic colour universe matches gracefully with the clear organic shape of the vases. The Botanica vases are available as a floor vase, a mini vase and an even smaller miniature vase. The Botanica dish is a delight to the eye. The craftsmanlike and aesthetic quality means that the dish is not only put on the table with something on it, but is an ornament in itself.

NOBILI DESIGN METTE BACHE AND BARBARA BENDIX BECKER

The Nobili range reinterprets classic Christmas decoration and is rooted in recognisable Scandinavian Christmas traditions, giving the design enthusiast some exclusive and modern Christmas decorations. The beautiful tealight candle holders clearly draw their inspiration from Scandinavia’s deep, green pine forests and are created in a simple, stylish cone shape. When you light a tealight in the candle holder, the numerous little holes light up, evoking a poetic fir tree with candles on every single branch. The glaze contrasts beautifully with the pure, unglazed surface, highlighting the texture of the ceramic and creating an exclusive look. The Nobili decoration baubles are carefully dipped in the glaze, leading to a random, decorative distribution and an undulating elegance on the unglazed surface. The idiom is simple and the glaze is in subdued colours, so the baubles make a beautiful decoration on a branch throughout December, before being carefully moved over to the Christmas tree as Christmas Eve approaches.

The popular Cono candlesticks and Cono storage jars are now accompanied by three new gracious bowls shaped as an oak leaf, a beech leaf and a maple leaf. The characteristic leaf shapes are reminiscent of rust-ling leaves on the forest floor, and the shiny glaze brings memories of beautiful patterns of hoar. The entire Cono series has myriad applications both as dishes, serving bowls, table decorations and plates. They offer a raft of opportunities and can be combined with the maple leaves as plates and the jars for serving to create a cool and subdued dinner table.

The Cono storage jars offer a perfect hiding place for the sweet and more exclusive treats. Put out treats for your guests with these small design wonders from Kähler. The three jars with natural blue shades are reminiscent of the cold Nordic winters and the clear winter sky. The modern tones interact gracefully with the jars’ recognisable acorn shape, and the transparency of the glaze makes the shape become alive and alluring.
