SPRING 2017

WELCOME TO KÄHLER’S SPR ING 2017

Each season, Kähler is looking forward to introducing new, exciting and different ceramic designs, and spring 2017 is no exception. This season, we will introduce both new colours for our popular designs, new designs to our existing ranges and relaunch a popular design favourite. Last but not least, we are extremely proud of presenting a brand new range, which combines history and innovation at one and the same time – our new range of animal money banks which are inspired by the time when Nils Kähler worked at the workshop in Næstved. In his spare time, Nils enjoyed playing around with materials and ways of using the clay, and it was from his fantasy and curiosity the animal money banks were created and quickly became some of the most popular products in our history. For 2017, we have naturally given our animal money banks a transformation; however, the ideas behind them are the same as in the 1920s and 30s when they were first introduced: High-quality craftsmanship must be accessible to all, and a lively fantasy and good design are not mutually exclusive. Even though our collection this season will also present many new items, the love of good craftsmanship, respect for our history and curiosity about what we can do with ceramics will always reign supreme. Indeed, it is at the core of Kähler’s DNA – the idea that beautiful and functional design must be accessible to all – which is just as important today as it has always been.

Warm wishes from All of us at Kähler

SPAREDYR

DESIGN OF THE YE AR HONOUR S H ISTORY DESIGN KÄHLER DESIGN

This spring, Kähler will introduce a brand new range of functional design objects that not only in design and colour follows Scandinavian design traditions, it also celebrates a chapter in our history that was about having fun while creating innovative and different ceramic designs that everyone could afford. The story goes that at the end of the 1920s, Nils Kähler, the last Kähler to be artistic manager of the workshop, had fun after hours playing with the potter’s wheel and creating funny, quirky and inspiring money banks shaped like animals. It was only meant as a fun leisure time activity, but it caused trouble when Nils’ father, the legendary Herman A. Kähler, one day found a specimen in the garbage. What on earth was it doing there? It was such a wonderful idea to create animal money banks, so now they just had to get on and make even more! That is how the animal money banks became some of the most popular products in Kähler’s more than 175 year history. It is this very story and the tradition of creating different and unexpected ceramic designs that form the cornerstone of the new range of animal money banks. With the decorative and stylish fabulous fish that come in both neutral and strong colours, the decorative object will again earn a prominent spot in the home. The unique design and the variation in colours and design will no doubt stir the imagination of anyone who sees these wonderful decorative fish. It may very well become this year’s design present for baptisms, birthdays and other joyful occasions.

HAMMERSHØI

C L A S S I C , E L E G A N T, HAMMERSHØI DESIGN HANS-CHRISTIAN BAUER

In less than two years, our new classic Hammershøi range has become a customer favourite when they buy tableware and accessories for their home Colours, functionality and design have all contributed to the massive success of the Hammershøi range. We now expand the range with some designs that are not only beauty to look at, they also accommodate many of the requirements for function and high quality people have today. This spring, we will introduce a range of new designs for the table in porcelain, including an elegant teapot, egg cups, bowls in different sizes, a serving jug and a dish. We will also launch a beautiful paper towel holder in oiled oak with a porcelain knob as well as a brand new drinking glass that naturally features the distinctive and legendary furrows. The elegant furrows are inspired by renowned artist Svend Hammershøi’s original works from the beginning of the 20th century – a history that has helped the Hammershøi range strike a chord with many people with a love for original story telling. The designer behind the Hammershøi range, Hans-Christian Bauer, is a master at creating new designs for the range, and with each new product he carefully contemplates their functionality, the position of the furrows and not least the balance of the design. The iconic and carefully devised furrows are contrasted by a soft idiom, giving the design a balanced and organic quality, which allows the Hammershøi range to be combined with other designs in the modern home.

TEAPOT The beautiful teapot with brass-covered handle is designed according to historic design and tea-making principles. Like the other designs in the range, the pot is inspired by Svend Hammershøi’s classic works and holds up to 1.2 L of liquid. It comes with an integrated strainer in the form of small holes in the porcelain on the inside of the spout to hold back any leaves when you pour the tea. This functional detail not only results in optimum tea making if you use loose tea, but also gives balanced and comfortable pouring.

UNICO

UNIQUE UNICO IN SOF T SH ADES DESIGN ANDERS ARHØJ

With a unique idiom and a special sense of design and colour, Danish designer Anders Arhøj has created Unico – a unique range of art objects inspired by Japanese ceramic traditions. Since it was launched in 2015, the range has stirred much excitement all over the world, and the stunning shapes and unique colours are often seen in the homes of some of the leading trendsetters in the world where the strong colours create a beautiful contrast to the more neutral and austere interior design. In spring 2017, we will launch the existing designs in a brand new scale of spring pastels that perfectly match the existing colours and work beautifully on their own as focal points in the modern home. The beautiful sherbet tones and the special glaze evoke the light of spring on the sky and in the water and introduce 2017’s colour trends in the best possible way. The collection includes table and floor vases, a flowerpot, a bowl and a dish – all in subdued colours as you can see on these pages. The texture of the reactive and heavy glaze used on Unico differs from one design to the next, meaning that no two designs are the same. With Unico you get a unique and functional piece of craftsmanship for the home.

MANO

R E L AU N C H O F P O P U L A R FAV O U R I T E DESIGN JEANETTE LIST AMSTRUP

In 2017, one of the most popular ranges in Kähler’s recent history can celebrate its 10th anniversary. With its unique idiom, Mano is a beautiful and elegant range in ceramics that was first launched in 2007. To celebrate the special place this range has in our heart and in the hearts of many design lovers, we will relaunch Mano this spring in an exciting double glaze and brand new colours. The popular, comfortable cup and the bulky complementary jug are now available in five new shades that taps into the current trend where materials and colours exude Nordic design tradition, naturalness and calm. The designer of the range, Jeanette List Amstrup, explains how she works with the design of Mano: “For both the jugs and cups, I apply a special technique where I pour liquid plaster into balloons which I then work with and shape until the plaster settles. This is how Mano gets its bulky, natural and almost ergonomic shape, which I find so important. Mano is designed in a way that makes it easy to decipher its function. When you as I want to do away with the handle on both the jug and the cups to keep the design clean, it is important to incorporate other markers that clearly show what kind of product you are dealing with.” Mano is a quite unique Kähler product, and with its special idiom and the new, beautiful and calm colours, it invites contemplation and togetherness – whether with your guests around the dinner table, with the family on the couch or for a quite moment in the kitchen with a good book.
