Why Maternal Health Matters to Rotarians It is no doubt that the health of a mother impacts the family. Her ability to receive necessary healthcare largely determines health outcomes for herself and her baby. Unfortunately, millions of mothers in Uganda face numerous challenges and most risk their very lives to give life to their babies. These huddles range from lack of access to nearby health facilities, ill equipped and understaffed health centers, lack of appropriate transport such ambulances to health facilities, lack of disposable income to fund this expensive venture, among others.
What are beneficiaries saying? A health facility was built in Abur Village in Tororo district by the Rotary club of Tororo to serve over 3,000 people in that community. Abur is one of the villages with the highest rates of infant and maternal death due to long distances to health facilities. John Okiror, a community leader said, “Sometimes our people resort to using unskilled traditional birth attendants or even attempt to deliver their babies from home because they lack transport and money to go to hospital which is over five kilometers away.” “We thank Rotary for bring health services close to our village,” said the community leader. “We are grateful to Rotary for holding several medical camps in our communities every year to provide free health services to our mothers. Ssese Islands is made of over 40 small isolated Islands, posing an acute challenge of access to health services for most communities, especially mothers,” said Fred Bada, a Member of Parliament for Ssese Islands.
What Rotarians are doing to save mother and child? Rotary believes health is a human
right, and is wholeheartedly engaged in funding and providing health services to save the lives of mothers and their babies in Uganda. Services offered range from cervical and breast cancer screening, family planning services including the distribution of contraceptives, HIV/AIDS counseling and testing, sexual reproductive health education, distribution of mosquito nets to expectant mothers and children, to the distribution of delivery kits – ‘mama bags’ to expectant mothers.
How does Rotary raise funds? Annually Rotary holds fundraising
drives and receives contributions from businesses and the public towards secur-
ing maternal health for disadvantaged mothers and children. Proceeds from such fundraising events are used to build and/or equip several health facilities in Uganda. Rotarians are planning a charity walk in Ssese Islands on February 21st dubbed “Walk for Maternal Health to Save a Life.”
What Next?
Please join Rotarians in contributing towards and participating in the charity walk due to take place in Ssese Islands on February 21st dubbed “Walk for Maternal Health to Save a Life.” For more information, Please call the Coordinator: Rotarian Jane Frances at +256-782000323. February - March 2014

UHABA organizes Worker’sPAS training and assessment workshop Uganda Hair and beauty Alliance (UHABA) has become pivotal in the Hair and beauty industry and there are a series of activities conducted to ensure the growth of the industry. The recent “Worker’sPAS training and assessment workshop“ which took place between 20th -31stMay 2013 was engineered to compact the skill-gaps for 15 Hairdressers The two weeks training comprised different modules like Hygiene & Safety, Product Knowledge, Customer Care and Practical Sessions and was enriched with lectures from representatives of KCCA and UNBS. UHABA’s ultimate objective of the training is to sensitize and provide capacity building in terms of information sharing and skills training to the practitioners in the Beauty industry so as to raise their income and employability, considering the stiff competition that they

Knowing that professionalizing the Beauty Industry cuts across aspects like salon ecology, sanitation and Hygiene, customer care, product knowledge and application, the trainees where educated in details about all the above aspects so that they may be agents of change in their respective places of work. It is during these educational sessions that stakeholders like KCCA, UNBS asserted what they expect from the practitioners for the improvement of the industry and it is on record that KCCA assesses adequacy not perfection, Miss Janet an Inspector from KCCA, public health Directorate emphasized. By the end of the two weeks training the trainees went through the Worker’sPAS assessment organized by UGAPRIVI (The Ugandan Association of Private Vocational Institutions). The Worker’sPAS is a new certification for people who never had the chance to pass a formal vocational education and therefore lack the necessary documentation to prove that they are skilled. During two days the candidates demonstrated their skills under observation of experienced and specially trained Hairdressing Experts. We are glad to report that all the participants passed the tests and will receive this new certification that is approved by the Ministry of Education
& Sport and its department DIT (Directorate for Industrial Training). The awarding of the Worker’sPAS at the end of such training and assessment is a significant indicator that the Hair Dresser will be hand in gloves with the certified skills that are duly stamped in their individual Worker’sPAS. With the recognition of such a certification by the Government, we envisage that more entrepreneurs will be unearthed from the informal thus bridging the gap between the formal and informal learning. The participants and new Worker’sPAS holders agreed that the training was a success and recommended to organize more training of this kind so that more Hairdressers can benefit. The training was co-funded by the European Union and Swisscontact. He then proposed calling fire down from heaven to consume the Red Sea, Solomon pointed out that this did not solve the problem of the Egyptians. Elijah looked at them incredulously, before saying what appeared to him as obvious: he would call fire down on the Egyptians too. Daniel remarked that Elijah’s method wasn’t cost-effective.

A preacher was completing a temperance sermon; with great expression he said, “If I had all the beer in the world, I’d take it and throw it into the river.” With even greater emphasis he said, “And if I had all the wine in the world, I’d take it and throw it into the river.” And then finally, he said, “And if I had all the whiskey in the world, I’d take it and throw it into the river.” He sat down. The song leader then stood very cautiously and announced with a smile, “For our closing song, let us sing Hymn # 365: “Shall We Gather at the River.”
God the parent! Whenever your kids are out of control, you can take comfort from the thought that even God’s omnipotence did not extend to God’s kids. After creating heaven and earth, God created Adam and Eve. And the first thing He said to them was: “Don’t.” “Don’t what?” Adam asked. “Don’t eat the Forbidden Fruit.” God replied. “Forbidden fruit? We got Forbidden Fruit? Hey, Eve..We got Forbidden Fruit!” “No way!” “Where?” “Don’t eat that fruit!” said God. “Why?” “Because I am your Creator and I said so!” said God, wondering why he hadn’t stopped after making the elephants. A few minutes later God saw the kids having an apple break and was angry.”Didn’t I tell you not to eat that fruit?” the ‘First Parent’ asked. “Uh huh,” Adam replied. “Then why did you?” “I dunno,” Eve answered. “She started it!” Adam said. “Did not!” “DID so!” “DID NOT!” Having had it with the two of them, God’s punishment was that Adam and Eve should have children of their own... thus the pattern was set, and it has never changed. Start washing at an early stage, At the early stage, it is important to begin and maintain a washing culture. You could decide to wash your locks every 3 or 4 days and maintain that schedule for a while so you hair adjusts to it. This would help your dreadlocks establish their individual patterns. After a month or two, you can then begin to wash them every other day
Use residue free- shampoo
Always use residue free shampoo. This residue is sometimes left behind after washing your hair and could cause a bad build up on your locks or scalp. For dreadlocks, these problematic residues are those left behind by traditional soaps made from animal fats or vegetable sources like olive oil or coconut oils. The residue build up could prevent the hair from locking properly which could make your dreads look poorly done or rough. It could also lead to dread rot which is the growth of mildew in the dread, leading to bad smell.
Pattern your shampoo to your dread growth Dreadlocks go through different stages of maturity. Therefore it is important to pattern your shampoo to the current stage of your dreads.
15
The type of shampoo your hair would require when it is at an early stage is different from when it has reached mid-length.
Make sure to get all the water out After you have washed your dreadlocks, be sure to rinse them out properly. Dreadlocks consist of a lot of hair and you could become tired of continually rinsing them, but it is very important that you do so. Not rinsing your dreadlocks properly could lead to more build up on your scalp which could eventually lock more dirt and cause dread rot.
Moisturize and use dread wax to hold in place After washing, the dreadlocks may loosen as a result of the method of washing. To remedy this, after you have washed the locks and they are now dry, apply some dread wax in a twisting motion. This takes the loose strands of hair and locks them back in place. After you have waxed your hair, then use a dread cap to hold the dreadlocks in place while they wax. Courtesy of Internet,

(Traditional visiting of the groom to the brides aunt/ Senga)
Culture in its own sense builds a family and maintains it, with the numerous tribes in Uganda each one of them has a cultural norm or law that is followed, from giving birth to getting married.
I
n Buganda the groom had to first visit the aunt of the bride to ask for the bride’s hand in marriage on behalf of the bride’s father and to also be borne in the family of the bride, the groom comes with the letter addressed to the bride’s father, which he gives to the senga to give to the father of the bride. Ideally the father of the bride is not supposed to know about the “Kukyala” or visitation of the groom to the senga. For Solomon Seruwagi, the experience was not any different from what used to happen in the old days, when he visited Priscilla Mugerwa’s Senga in Bugolobi , he visited with a group of twelve people, among them was the “Omwogezi” ( Speaker), one who speaks on his behalf (the groom is not meant to speak at the function). The groom and his escorts were welcomed and greeted by the bride’s cousin sisters, after which the uncle of the bride summoned her into the sitting room, and then asked her if the group before him were her visitors, to which she accepted, the uncle then told her to go identify the groom from the group. One of her aunties that was present introduced the “Senga owensonga” (ceremonial aunt) to the visitors. Senga spoke to the uncle and asked him to let their son-in-law hug her, which the groom got up to do. The uncle and the senga asked the groom to break down his lineage, which the speaker “Omwogezi” did on his
behalf, after which the uncle asked the Senga to also breakdown the lineage of the bride. The groom’s sister gave the bride a bottle of wine, a bouquet of flowers and also gave her a hug as a sign to the group that she was the bride they had chosen from the many. The senga also received gifts from groom’s family. The gifts that the senga received were shared out among the uncles and aunties in the family mostly those that were present for the Kukyala, Traditionally in Buganda the groom was meant to visit twice i.e. the

The bride was not meant to speak at the ceremony too, but just show face. The groom’s “Omwogezi” was meant to breakdown the groom’s lineage from four generations, and since the groom visited the senga to be born in the family, the groom, his men and the bride’s male elderly relatives had to eat dry coffee beans “emwanyi”. Traditionally the groom is not allowed to carry the gifts for the senga or anything, that load is left to the escorts of the groom. The groom brought “Omwenge” (locally brewed beer) a kind of currency used to ask for the bride’s hand in marriage. As told to Afrodite, AFRODITE

Healthy diet: By Florence Tushemerirwe
What dietary supplements can and cannot do for you
T
(MoH) encourages every woman of reproductive age to take prevent birth defects and anaemia.
What are the benefits of dietary supplements?
How to use them
What are dietary supplements? hese are food nutrients made from different ingredients, ment to only supplement not to replace your daily meals. The most common ones are made of vitamins, minerals, herbal extracts, enzymes, protein (in form of amino acids) and fish oils. They are manufactured in form of capsules, powder, and liquid forms and most of them have anti-oxidant properties (cleanse the body). It is very important for you to take time to read dietary supplement label before buying. The chemical composition is usually indicated and its use and dosage. On the label, there are health claims, for example, “prevents cancer; improves heart health. This can be mis-leading. Cancer types are many, so, innocent people will just buy such a supplement, without knowing the targeted type of cancer.
Dietary supplements maintain general health. Some of them specifically maintain particular parts of the body, for example, calcium and Vitamin D contribute towards maintaining bone health, folic acid and iron like the one Ministry of Health
When and who should take them?
From the health point of view, your doctor may recommend a dietary supplement to help you recover from an illness quickly, to help you to re-introduce natural food well and prevent nutrient deficiencies. Children who are recovering from severe and mild malnutrition too, may get some dietary supplements, if parents can afford and are guided on how to use them to help the child recuperate. In addition, elderly parents who have lost the appetite for the foods they once enjoyed that provided all the nutrients they needed to maintain their health; can have some dietary supplements. Care must be taken no to over-dose them or to give them complicated combinations that can instead affect their health. Most dietary supplements will require you to eat a balanced diet, and to drink lots of water while taking them. This reminds us that supplements do not replace our normal regular meals. Eat the food instead of popping the pill! Please take care not to buy from any vendor, go to a trusted pharmacy/ agency/doctor for your supplement.
What will happen to me if I miss-use dietary supplements? Research shows that different dietary supple-

These range from counteracting the effects of certain treatment, e.g. Vitamin C reduces the effectiveness of some cancer chemotherapy; dehydration; headache, liver damage, nausea, vomiting, weak bones, name it. Please note that most of these nutrients are currently added to foods that we buy. The trick is in reading the food labels. As Uganda transforms into “Giant” supermarket food shopping, read the labels. More nutrients in your body may not be better for you.

(e.g. Doodo, nakati, jjobyo, ensugga, spinarch, kale); onions; garlic and tomatoes are very important for maintaining your immunity. All of us love a glowing skin, hair, bright eyes, alert minds, name the beauty attributes. You have got your free and natural glow foods (fruits and vegetables), embrace them. Include carrots, avocado, peppers, natural flavours (e.g. coat meal, rosemary, salad onions, and celery). You have to clean them well before eating. Take some fermented foods as well, e.g. Yoghurt, cereal drinks e.g. bushera (made with millet or sorghum) as long as they are non-alcoholic, the fermented foods
have anti-oxidant properties that work the same or even better than the dietary supplements. These foods are rich in Calcium, Zinc and Selenium that people die for in dietary supplements. Small quantities of the fermented foods are recommended as part of your diet; don’t take 500ml of yoghurt daily, it might compromise other health efforts. These can be made in the comfort of your home and well supervised; there are affordable quantities of these on the market too. Dietary supplements cannot beat the benefits of mixed fruit juice; some people add vegetables into their juice. I love blending

carrots and cucumber in my fruit juice, I don’t add sugar. Fruits have natural and pure sugar, specially meant for you by God. These have a great cleansing effect. If you don’t have a blender, just eat them and drink the water! That is how I started and I don’t regret the benefits. You will need some protein. Add fish, eggs, lean pieces of meat to your diet as sources of Vitamins A, D, E, K, minerals like zinc, selenium, iron, magnesium are all naturally available for you, you need tiny quantities. So, varying your diet will give you your health balance. This kind of diet protects you from the dietary supplements side effects, you get the nutrients in natural form and you are protected against common colds, constipation, cancers, heart disease, high blood pressure, overweight and obesity; the list is endless. The natural foods have other nonnutrient components that have extra benefits to the body e.g. prevention of pre-mature aging. Till next month. The writer is a Public Health Nutritionists and Assistant Lecturer at Makarere University School of Public Health, and can be contacted on ftusht01@gmail.com, for questions, clarifications and complements.
Ministry of Health warns us through Radio and Television; to avoid replacing the doctor’s treatment with dietary supplements. In brief, do not self-diagnose and take dietary supplements to treat a medical condition. Plan with your doctor, if you must take it, to prevent the side effects we earlier discussed.
Do I have any alternatives?
I will not beat about the bush here; a balanced diet with a variety of foods is the gold standard to maintain/improve your health. Natural foods ranging from grain i.e. maize, wheat, millet and sorghum (e.g. bread/cereal made from whole/brown wheat flour) are abundant energy sources. Together we can avert the effects of cancer
Most of us know someone, whose life has been affected by cancer, be it breast, cervical, prostate or any other form of cancer. Worse still, some of us have lost loved ones to cancer due to inadequate preventive measures or delayed medical treatment. Today the number of cancer patients in Uganda has shot up to 2800 from 1200 in 2010 with over 60% of the patients presenting advanced cases of the diseases.
G
Why Rotary intervened?
lobally, cancer kills more people than HIV/AIDS, TB and malaria. For this reason, Rotarians took it upon themselves to mobilize Ugandans to tackle this immobilizing disease. It was prudent for Rotary to intervene with an alternative state-of-the-art cancer facility to readily avail cancer prevention and treatment services to all persons affected by cancer. The Uganda Cancer Institute based in Mulago Hospital is the only facility in the region serving hundreds of patients from eight neighboring countries.
What Rotary is doing to Stop Cancer in Uganda? On seeing the plight of hundreds of Ugandans
currently losing life to cancer, Rotary Uganda set out to construct a new Cancer Ward in Nsambya Hospital. The state-of-the-art Cancer Ward is roofed and nearing completion. It will be fully equipped with appropriate machines, supplies and personnel. Furthermore, Rotary is taking preventive measures against cancer as opposed to just curative. Community awareness campaigns and free counseling and testing services for the different cancers are ongoing throughout the country spearheaded by
Rotarians.
Source of Funding for the New Cancer Ward The construction of the Cancer Ward is esti-
mated at 1.2 billion shillings. The project is mostly financed in partnership with business and corporate organizations as well as individual contributions. Fundraising drives are one of so many avenues Rotary is using to complete and equip the state-ofthe-art Cancer Ward. So far, two Cancer Runs have been held in Uganda and the third one is slated for August 2014.
Join us in completing the New Cancer Ward The next fundraising cancer run named: ‘Run against Cancer’ will be on Sunday, 31st August, 2014. You are invited to contribute to this noble cause by participating in the run or sponsoring an individual. Tickets are available at the Rotary Office. Shaggy dreads also known as Baby dreads, Most people use a towel when drying out their hair and dry it in a circular kind of way and later look shabby. Sister locks, these locks where started by a Doctor in USA, they are very tiny, these are versatile and easy to style, called micro-dreads, time consuming. Find a good locktician This is so important especially in your beginning stages of growing locks. You want a locktician that can give you great advice and recommend healthy products. If you’re cutting off the last of your perm and going natural so that you can start locking, or if you are twisting your already natural hair, please have a real conversation about your hair objectives and your desired look with your potential new stylist prior to them twisting your hair. Make sure you feel comfortable with her or him, and get a sense of how knowledgeable they really are about dreadlocks. For example, a good locktician will share small but important details like: the size of your initial twists is a good indication of the width of your final locks.
Massage your scalp
Not only is it very relaxing, but it also stimulates hair growth. You’d be surprised how the simple act of gently massaging your hair at night for about 5 minutes, will really help you achieve the beautiful locks you desire.

By far the hardest lesson I’ve learned when dealing with my hair. This isn’t a process that will happen overnight. Locking your hair is a journey and it’s a little different for each person. Some people’s hair locks faster than others. Thicker hair tends to lock faster. The good thing is that if you nurture and take good care of your hair then the growth will come. It really will. Interview
Meet Louie, the Locktician Louie Ovon Bismarck the proprietor of Sparkle and Shine in Nakawa opposite MUBS tells Afrodite magazine of his journey into the dreadlock world. Where did you get the inspiration to start the dreadlocks business?
I
had dreadlocks the time I came back to Uganda and could not find a person that could work on them the way I wanted, I had just returned from London, and wanted to start out on my profession in Marketing but people told me that I would not find a job with my kind of hair because employers and people stigmatized people with my kind of hair and never took them seriously and either way it would be difficult for me to settle into the profession. So I decide to start a business in dreadlocks, bought my current saloon with my savings.
How long have you spent in the business? Since June 2011, making it two and a half years,
How long have you had your dreadlocks?
Had them for 6years, started growing them in London, I have so far spent about 6million on them.
Why did u decide to lock your hair?
I decided to lock my hair because it was cheaper to maintain, compared to trimming my hair, I had to use 10pounds every week which was rather costly, and with dreadlocks I spent 35pounds per month.
Do you work on your hair or you have some one help you with it? I used to work on my hair, but later trained one of my workers and now she is the one that works on my hair.
How many clients do you work on in a day and how long do you AFRODITE

take on one client?
First of all I work on appointment, so! On average I can work on 5 clients in a day, it takes me one and half hours to work on a client.
Any challenges you have faced in the dreadlock business?
I have faced a number of challenges, first of all it is difficult to train a person, to work the way you would like to have it done. The work ethic is poor too, some people are trained and they start off well and later fall off or give up, the clients too expect much more than what their hair can give, with dreadlocks one has to be patient, some of them give up on the third stage, decide to change a locktician, while others just cut it off. There are also some financial challenges, like the rent is quite high and one can not charge well, for instance I have been with the same prices for the last three years for both repair and when starting, i.e. 35,000 and 50,000 respectively, and yet clients expect you to reduce on the prices, because they
feel dreadlocks are common now.
Any success stories?
I feel I have achieved a lot out of this business since I did not go to school for it, I did research, pursued and taught myself the art of dreadlocks. I have clients that have been with me for two years, am grateful for I can maintain my diversity of clients.
What is your biggest passion aside dreadlocks?
I have always loved photography; before I settled into the dreadlock business I used to do photography for weddings over the weekends and later opened up a studio called Timeless images not far away from the saloon in Nakawa.
Any last words of advice?
I encourage people to do dreadlocks, they are convenient, stylish, trendy, and one has to go to the saloon once in four or six weeks.

Who inspired you to change to dreadlocks?

y mother was keen on having my ears pierced, I declined, but right before she died I decided I would try out dreadlocks, which she was ok with, at first I chickened out because of the stigma that came with having dreadlocks. I took to locks partly in honor of my mother and to also try out something new. I started out with the double strand twist in Sweden that was in 2004, a friend took me to a saloon owned by a Ugandan lady who instantly locked my hair, later I decided to go for interlock, though it was more expensive compared to using beeswax to lock the hair.
hair, left it for the ladies, have no time anyway relating to the kind of work I do, and I love being comfortable.
Have you found any challenges keeping dreadlocks? Not really, maybe the fact that I can not swim as much as I used to. It is also expensive to get the right products for locks because they are imported.
Any advice for those out there trying to get into the dreadlocks world! It depends on what they are doing with their lives, i.e. their professions, dreadlocks are easy to keep.
How long have you had your dreadlocks? It has been 12 years, I last cut my hair in September 2001, during a friends wedding in Kigali where I had been invited to sing.
How many times do you visit the saloon? Once in six weeks,
How do you keep your dreadlocks looking clean and neat?
I wash my locks once a week; I wrap it in a towel for some good amount of time.

Suspending gravity A distinct “suspending gravity” or “floating” trend is rising as people have an increased psychological and physical desire to disconnect from our hyper-connected society. We are seeing more weightless stress—and mind-melting flotation tanks, chambers and pools at spas. On the fitness front, there is a global craze for aerial and anti-gravity classes and yoga, along with new equipment like anti-gravity treadmills. “Natural” beauty meets social media
Aromatherapy: Scent with intent
With the growing popularity of social media and “selfies,” people are expected to look their best 24/7, without the benefit of makeup and blowouts—which means we may finally be leaving the era of faux beauty. In 2014, a new cleanbeauty era takes shape focusing on the natural and introducing a high-tech, low-risk beauty. Spas will remain the torchbearers with organic products, science and technology intersecting to deliver minimal downtime results that are seemingly produced by nature. Check out Bastien Gonzalez’s Pedi: Mani: Cure studios in places like France, Singapore, Turkey and India.
Aromatherapy plays a greater role in the treatment of physical and mental issues; spas have been motivated to re-imagine their approach to craft aromatherapies with intended effects. Spas are now moving away from the generically pleasant treatments and working in tandem with botanists and digital technology to improve effectiveness. Check out the Body Bliss Intentional Aromatherapy app, which allows spa directors to deliver personalized and intentional experiences to clients.
Wellness retreats rise…& urbanize Look for exciting movement on the destination spa front, where personalized, immersive wellness programming is the DNA, and life transformations are the goal. A distinct sub-trend is also emerging: the urban-close wellness retreat. Check out the spectacular, newly opened VANA in India’s Himalayan foothills and further expansion from destination spa Miraval in the dense northeast urban corridor of the U.S.
Death & Spas: thriving during life’s transitions When we think of spas, getting healthier, being pampered and looking our best comes to mind. As baby boomers, the group that has been the largest spa-going demographic for decades, start thinking seriously about aging and death, we are seeing spas of all kinds help clients tackle the changes, challenges and choices that come with dying. Spas are also helping people address other life challenges like divorce, illness, job loss and more. Check out Sarana, a new healthcare textiles collection created by renowned spa designer, Clodagh, designed to support healing environments in hospitals, spas and residences.

Gentlewoman Etiquette for a Lady, from a Gentleman (BEREOLAESQUE) (Volume 2)
U
neasy lays the head that wears a crown... Have you ever witnessed a Lady? Not a woman, but a Lady. She’s a girl by birth, woman by maturity and Lady by choice. Do you remember how the sight of a Lady made you feel? Did she smile at you? Could you feel her warmth? Do you remember her scent of comfort and truth? Can you recall how difficult it was explaining what you witnessed when she strolled by? Her high heels were music; her stride was a song. She walked in greatness influencing nations with each step. Do you remember the first time you saw a Lady? Well, when was the last time you saw her? Her story isn’t being told. Her legacy is being watered down and society is taking notes. She’s much more than a victim with hips. “GENTLEWOMAN“sets out to explore the demise of femininity and class in contemporary society. Unlike any other book, the author shares a lifetime of relevant research and insight that will inform, educate and empower womanhood. The book is fresh, fun and sexy uncommon sense advice designed to facilitate a necessary conversation amongst the sexes that leads to real solutions. Oh, and a man wrote it! CLASS IS BACK IN SESSION! “From selecting wines to selecting a mate, I am rebranding etiquette. Making manners beautiful, again,” –E.B. II
