Relationship Resolutions We’ve all been here before: We start the year with the best of intentions to lose weight, save money, or stop drinking, only to start February on the couch with champagne and cupcakes. Resolving to improve our relationships in little ways, however, is more realistic than we think. Below are 25 of them—whether we're single, dating, or deeply committed.
10
1.
Apply CEO logic to your relationship. Mega-successful people don't dwell on their failures; they treat them as learning opportunities. Think: What if that bad breakup was the best thing that ever happened to you?
2.
Shut the bathroom door. You can’t maintain sexy mystique if he can see hair remover on the sink or talk to you while you are on the toilet.
2.
Say you’re sorry. Love means always having to say this. Sometimes in the heat of the moment, we worry too much about being right and forget that we’re on the same team. But you never “win” a fight if the other person walks away miserable.
3.
Go to your girlfriends instead of your man to vent. For women, talking about problems releases the "feel-good" oxytocin hormone and lowers stress levels, while men just get tired and frustrated. Go to him when you need suggestions for a solution.
4.
Snuggle more. When it comes to longterm relationship health, snuggling is just as important as sex. Both release the “cuddle” hormone oxytocin that makes us pair-bond, but snuggling also lowers stress and blood pressure, feels good, and makes you feel connected.
5.
Eat and work out like you’re single. Of course we want someone who loves us “no matter what,” but living in sweatpants with
pizza delivery on speed dial sends the message that we’ve stopped putting in the effort.
6.
Talk about money. Pretend you are getting a pre-nup (and if you are getting married, get one for real). Throw everything on the table: Ask about income, debt, and financial goals. Financial incompatibility is a leading cause of divorce, so you’d be wise to know if you plan out every purchase while your significant other stuffs bills in the back of a drawer.
7.
Figure out what you want. Remember that relationships aren’t slot machines. Continuing to invest in something that isn’t paying out doesn’t increase your odds of hitting the jackpot in the end. Instead of waiting around for something to change, be honest about what you want—with the people you are dating and with yourself.
8.
Ask questions. Fear is the reason why people wait years to find out that someone doesn’t want to get married or have children. The question you’re most afraid to hear the answer to is the one that you should definitely ask.
9.
Ditch the ridiculous deal breakers. It's great to have high standards, but if your list of qualities to rule people out is
For Her more than a page long, you’re probably being too picky. Break up with the fantasy guy who lives in your head and accept that the perfect man for you will not be perfect. This is okay, because you aren't either.
they did was okay; it means that you are choosing to let it go and be free. If you are holding on to guilt, make amends and forgive yourself for past mistakes.
10.
16.
Stop comparing yourself to others. It’s toxic. Instead of pitting yourself against your friends’ Facebook posts, look in the mirror: How have you grown in the past year? What have you learned? What do you hope to achieve?
11.
Be logical. Falling in love activates the same dopamine reaction in the brain as cocaine, so remember that during the first few months of a relationship you are under the influence of infatuation. Remind yourself to be rational, ask questions, and really listen to the answers. Even the ones you don’t want to hear.
12.
14.
Stop multitasking. Put down the phone during dinner, be an active listener, and don’t think about your inbox during sex. Resolve to be more fully present for your relationship.
15.
Make this the year that you really put the past behind you. Forgive the ex who cheated or friend who let you down. This doesn’t mean that what
17.
Give. Small gifts year-round keep that warm, fuzzy holiday feeling going. Something as simple as a massage or picking up his favorite dinner after a stressful day can strengthen intimacy.
18.
Do nothing. When in doubt about what to do, sometimes the best thing to do is nothing. After an angry confrontation but before you send an angry text or email, ask yourself: Are you acting or just reacting? Often the need to “do something” is often driven by emotion, so you may get better results by waiting until you can
make a more rational decision.
19.
Mind your manners during arguments. It’s hard to be polite in the heat of the moment, so set ground rules ahead of time. This means no name-calling and no fighting in front of other people.
20.
Learn to live in the moment instead of obsessing over “having it all.” This is an illusion anyway because our lives are constantly in flux. More job or relationship security usually equals less freedom, and there are benefits to being on both sides. So whether it’s your amazing boyfriend, your adventurous single life, or simply the ability to completely control the TV remote, find something about your life that you can appreciate right now
11
Stop focusing on whether or not a first date could be The One. Pretending you’re meeting a friend can help prevent you from picking apart his flaws in your mind and will make you more confident and relaxed—which is also very attractive.
Have adventures together. If you are bored, stop being boring. Learn a new language, take a trip, or just ride a roller coaster. The important thing is that you never stop having fun.
Stop comparing yourself to others. It’s toxic. Instead of pitting yourself against your friends’ Facebook posts, look in the mirror:

Friday Night Lights; Kampala’s night sensation
E
very Friday Kampala’s urban young crowd heads down to Wandegeya at the YMCA basketball grounds to watch their favourite team slug it out for the top prize. Teams like Kasewu. Ikong, Enabu and the star studded LK4 among others complete the package of the entertainment that the weekly night has become renowned for. Brenda 23, an avid basketball fun says every Friday she has to storm the place with a group of friends and catch the fun till late.“I have been attending FNL ever since it started two years ago. I always turn out to scream for my favourite side Team Blick and every other time it’s
been a blast”. Unlike Brenda, several of the people who attend are normal revellers just like those who go to Kyadondo Rugby Club without a clue of how the game is played or how the rules according to which the game is played. Friday Night Lights (FNL) is a brainchild of
Kinetic Sports Management; a company owned by Cedric Babu. They are into event management and also double as a sports agency. The firm has also worked with talents like Duncan Mugabe and several sports stars. The event is staged in the offseason of the basketball league and it’s meant to provide a game flavoured with entertainment. Several artistes such as Navio, Big Trill, Bebe Cool have performed before. LK 4, which looks more for a showbiz outfit has had names such as Judith Heard, Miss Uganda Phiona Bizzu, Zarie Hussein and it’s no surprise that they never progress beyond the quarterfinals year in year out.

Barcelona Come Back on PSG for 1-1 Draw After Lionel Messi’s Introduction
W
here would Barcelona be without Lionel Messi? Wednesday was almost the night we found out. Without Messi for 62 minutes, Barcelona struggled to assert their familiar dominance and fell behind Paris Saint-Germain in their own stadium. With him, Barca quickly fought back and held on for a nervy 1-1 draw Wednesday night in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League quarterfinal. Neither the result nor the performance were exactly what Barca are known for. Messi, meanwhile, didn’t score even after his dramatic introduction. But with an injured superstar in their ranks, Barca simply won’t care. After Pedro’s decisive
goal secured a draw at the Camp Nou, the Catalans are headed for their sixth straight semifinal appearance. That’s the only thing that matters. As promised, the team sheets prompted plenty of talking points ahead of kickoff. Most notably, Cesc Fabregas reprised his starting spot in Messi’s “false nine” role. Messi had suffered a hamstring twinge in last week’s first leg, but without him at the weekend, Barca blew away Mallorca 5-0 with Cesc scoring his first career hat trick. At the back, Tito Vilanova—himself a recent returnee from a serious health scare—opted for Adriano to partner Gerard Pique in the absence of Javier Mascherano
Barcelona, dominating possession as usual, saw a halfchance pass with Pedro firing into the side netting.
(injured and suspended) and Carles Puyol (merely injured). For PSG, Marco Verratti and Thiago Motta started in the holding midfield in place of the suspended Blaise Matuidi and the derided David Beckham. Almost immediately, Barcelona were nearly ahead. The hosts won a free kick on the left side just outside the box, and Xavi curled his shot just outside the far post. A frantic exchange ensued, as both sides created danger. Ezequiel Lavezzi made a foray into Barca’s box and Andres Iniesta tried an audacious chip on PSG’s goal from long distance. Not intimidated by the occasion, PSG kept up the pace. Lucas Moura saw one shot saved and another fly over the bar, and Lavezzi added another effort off target within the first 20 minutes. Barcelona, dominating possession as usual, saw a half-chance pass with Pedro firing into the side netting. The visitors carved out the clearest opening yet in the 24th minute. A flowing team move fell to Lavezzi, whose low effort was pushed away by Victor Valdes. Moments later, Lucas headed at Valdes after being picked out by Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s deep cross. For PSG, coming so close so often must have been both encouraging and discouraging. Against a team as talented as Barca, creating chances is itself a difficult task. Then again, when playing a ruthless team like them, it’s imperative to convert those chances.

alking can be a therapeutic exercise. It gives you time to wonder, reflect and engage in the environment. Julius, the protagonist of Teju Cole’s debut novel Open City, is an expert in this exercise. We follow him through three cities: New York, Brussels and Lagos. He is a half Nigerian and half German immigrant completing a psychiatry fellowship in New York. The book begins with Julius recounting how he started going on evening walks essentially to take the pressure off from work, but they got longer and longer causing him to use public transport to get back home. He then drifts into how he used to think about bird migration.

Shameless season 3 episode 3
A
fter last week’s dynamic courtroom coda, the Gallagher family is beginning to deal with the fallout. Fiona is now the children’s guardian and is tasked with providing for them even more so than in the past. But while Fiona and Frank battled in court, Frank’s cousin Patrick “out-Gallaghered” both of them, coming up with his own phony will giving him ownership of Aunt Ginger’s home where the family had been staying. Patrick eulogizes Ginger before dumping her ashes on the corner where she worked as a prostitute and plans to move ahead with renovating the home and selling it, potentially leaving Fiona and the kids on the street with nowhere to go. Throughout the show’s three seasons, Aunt Ginger’s home has always been the one constant foundation for the children. No matter how
bleak things have seemed, they’ve always had a roof over their heads. Now, it’s the first day of a new school year, Patrick is moving ahead with an extreme home takeover, and Fiona is almost immediately floundering in her primary responsibility as her siblings’ guardian. Next door, we’re a solid three episodes into Kevin and Veronica’s attempts to use Veronica’s mother as a surrogate, and the subplot is beginning to feel like it has run its course. Unsurprisingly, Veronica’s mother has begun to enjoy Kevin’s… company…a little too much. “We might as well get some ambiance,” she explains, before dropping the needle on a D’Angelo CD. Eventually, Veronica puts an end to it; the couple is going to have to come up with a new way to have a baby. In the meantime, various parties take turns trying unsuccessfully to stop Pat-

That too, though, fails, and the family begins looking for more affordable homes.
