It is cool to have braids because they make it easy, you get to do different kinds of styles in your braids, you just keep trying out new things, giving me a good look, elegant and so smashing. The one thing I hate about braids is when they start falling out, moreover in public, it is so annoying.

having is an art, so you are free to approach your shaving in any manner you prefer and find more convenient. Having said this, there are certain tips that will for sure improve your shaving experience regardless of your preferred method and which will help you to continue to enjoy your daily (or almost-daily!) grooming ritual.

Wash your face with warm water before shaving

It is widely documented that warm water allows for the skin’s pores to open up as well as for the hair strands to soften, which altogether provides a smoother and easier shave., soak an unused clean cloth in the warm water and then softly press the cloth against the area of the face that will be shaving; this act prepares the face for the shaving and we have found that it not only makes the shaving easier but it also makes the facial skin more pliable and thus responsive to the shaving, which then allows for a closer shave too. In your case, all you would need to do is fill your sink with warm water prior to shaving and then soak your face with the warm water (simply skip the step with the cloth that we use). Now, if you happen to have a full beard like that of Chuck Norris, then I highly recommend that you do also use a cloth soaked in warm water and take a couple of minutes to soak your beard by pressing the soaked cloth against the beard.

Do not shave with a dull blade

Unfortunately, many men think that the dulling of a blade only happens after using the blade for a good number of times, which is incorrect and which only leads to poor shaving experiences that yield an uneven shaving finish. Whether you use a straight razor or a safety razor, a typical blade will only last a single shaving session before it becomes too dull for a close shave; this is especially so with the commercial range of razors (which are not particularly sharp to begin with) as well as if you’re shaving all of your face instead of just a section. The best solution to battle the

quick dulling of a razor is to use a platinumcoated razor. The platinum filaments provide a sharper protective surface that allows for a razor to give a closer shave and to last longer.

Cleanse and Soothe After Shaving

Use a Quality Shaving Cream

After shaving, when the skin is most vulnerable, rinse the face with warm water and use a facial wash that has a high concentration of tea tree oil (a natural antiseptic that is ideal to help cleanse and protect from spots and shaving rash) and witch hazel (for its soothing, healing and astringent properties). Rinse with the coolest water that is comfortable and pat dry with a clean towel. (Don’t rub! Just pat)

Use a shaving cream that has a high concentration of lubricants (e.g. silicones) and moisturizers. The best shaving creams create a rich creamy lather and do not foam up like the cheaper drug store brands. The less “foaming” in the shave cream the better, as it is what is in contact with the skin and beard that matters - all else is wasted. Less resistance, less irritation and fewer nicks also mean a longer lasting blade! While the primary function of the shaving cream is to lubricate your face so that the razor will glide smoothly and effortlessly across the surface, it also serves to lock the moisture into the whiskers, keeping them soft and upright, primed for the cut. The ideal scenario is to leave the shaving cream on your face for at least a minute before you begin cutting, so that the beard is as soft and wet as possible.

Finish off with an after Shave Lotion or Balm.

Shaving can remove up to two layers of skin. There is no other regular activity that does this, which is why it is so important to use a good quality moisturizer after shaving.

Shaving can remove up to two layers of skin. There is no other regular activity that does this, which is why it is so important to use a good quality moisturizer after shaving, An after shave lotion, designed as an after shave balm and moisturizer in one, is the ideal way to replace lost moisture and soothe the skin. And, be sure to use one made just for guys - these formulas are designed so that they are not greasy, absorb quickly and dry with a matte finish so that your face doesn’t look shiny. Typically moisturizers made for women are too greasy as men tend to have not only thicker skin but also oiler skin than women due to men’s larger sebaceous glands. The best after shave lotions not only replace lost moisture and soothe, but also have ingredients that will cool and refresh the skin.

INSIDE:

The tips given you above are tips that we have found of great use to all men regardless of shaving needs or chosen facial hairstyle. As soon as you start putting these tips to use, I can assure you that you will be experiencing a very-noticeable improvement in your shaving experience and daily grooming ritual!

For the best shaving experience, you will need a good mirror that allows you to adjust the mirror’s magnifying as well as prevent the build up of fog. Even better, having two mirrors will further improve your shaving experience: you use the main mirror to do the shaving while you use a second mirror placed at an angle to the main mirror so that you can then get the best visual field to shape your sideburns and side of the face as you shave.

ball for eight or 12 hours a day and it’s no wonder you’re tired. And fatigue might not be your only problem. Poor posture can cause back, neck, and other muscle and joint problems. As you slump, your body may compensate by flattening the normal inward curves in your neck and lower back. This can cause pain and degenerative arthritis of the spine.

Strength Test

Each time you practice yoga, you take your joints through their full range of motion. This can help prevent degenerative arthritis or mitigate disability by “squeezing and soaking” areas of cartilage that normally aren’t used. Joint cartilage is like a sponge; it receives fresh nutrients only when its fluid is squeezed out and a new supply can be soaked up. Without proper sustenance, neglected areas of cartilage can eventually wear out, exposing the underlying bone like worn-out brake pads.

Flex Time mproved flexibility is one of the first and most obvious benefits of yoga. During your first class, you probably won’t be able to touch your toes, never mind do a backbend. But if you stick with it, you’ll notice a gradual loosening, and eventually, seemingly impossible poses will become possible. You’ll also probably notice that aches and pains start to disappear. That’s no coincidence. Tight hips can strain the knee joint due to improper alignment of the thigh and shinbones. Tight hamstrings can lead to a flattening of the lumbar spine, which can cause back pain. And inflexibility in muscles and connective tissue, such as fascia and ligaments, can cause poor posture.

Try it once in awhile in your free time; it would be easier to get a yoga tape to help you out.

Strong muscles do more than look good. They also protect us from conditions like arthritis and back pain, and help prevent falls in elderly people. And when you build strength through yoga, you balance it with flexibility. If you just went to the gym and lifted weights, you might build strength at the expense of flexibility.

Standing Orders

Your head is like a bowling ball— big, round, and heavy. When it’s balanced directly over an erect spine, it takes much less work for your neck and back muscles to support it. Move it several inches forward, however, and you start to strain those muscles. Hold up that forward-leaning bowling

Tools

one of the best tools you can use to achieve the optimum shave is a shaving brush (as top barbers do). A shaving brush does a couple of things. First, it helps raise the hair so that a closer cut is possible. Second, it helps create a rich creamy lather with the shaving cream that stays close to the skin. And, finally, it helps remove dead skin cells (exfoliation) which reduces the chance of blemishes, razor bumps and also helps the skin look and feel smooth and healthy. Always look for a shaving brush with bristles that have the right balance between softness (to create a rich creamy lather that stays close to the skin) and resistance to raise the beard (making a closer cut easier!)

that can herniate and compress nerves crave movement. That’s the only way they get their nutrients. If you’ve got a well-balanced asana practice with plenty of backbends, forward bends, and twists, you’ll help keep your disks supple.

Bone Zone

it’s well documented that weightbearing exercise strengthens bones and helps ward off osteoporosis. Many postures in yoga require that you lift your own weight. And some, like Downward- and Upward-Facing Dog, help strengthen the arm bones, which are particularly vulnerable to osteoporotic fractures. In an unpublished study conducted at California State University, Los Angeles, yoga practice increased bone density in the vertebrae. Yoga’s ability to lower levels of the stress hormone cortical may help keep calcium in the bones.

Yoga also gets more oxygen to your cells, which function better as a result. Twisting poses are thought to wring out venous blood from internal organs and allow oxygenated blood to flow in once the twist is released. Inverted poses, such as Headstand, Handstand, and Shoulder stand, encourage venous blood from the legs and pelvis to flow back to the heart, where it can be pumped to the lungs to be freshly oxygenated. This can help if you have swelling in your legs from heart or kidney problems. Yoga also boosts levels of hemoglobin and red blood cells, which carry oxygen to the tissues. And it thins the blood by making platelets less sticky and by

cutting the level of clot-promoting proteins in the blood. This can lead to a decrease in heart attacks and strokes since blood clots are often the cause of these killers.

Pressure Drop

WRITERS: Diana Zziwa,Patricia Ashaba, Brenda Mabaraza.

If you’ve got high blood pressure, you might benefit from yoga. Two studies of people with hypertension, published in the British medical journal The Lancet, compared the effects of Savasana (Corpse Pose) with simply lying on a couch. After three months, Savasana was associated with a 26-point drop in systolic blood pressure (the top number) and a 15-point drop in diastolic blood pressure (the bottom number and the higher the initial blood pressure, the bigger the drop).

Weighty Matters

Move more, eat less that’s the adage of many a dieter. Yoga can help on both fronts. A regular practice gets you moving and burns calories, and the spiritual and emotional dimensions of your practice may encourage you to address any eating and weight problems on a deeper level. Yoga may also inspire you to become a more conscious eater. Courtesy of yogajournal.com/health July - August 2014

ACCESSORISE YOUR BRAIDS

A

By Brenda Mabaraza woman’s hair is what enhances her beauty, though unadorned hair is beautiful but looks more sophisticated when accessorized. The art of accessorizing not only adds onto one’s beauty but also perfection to any woman’s look, especially braided hair. Accessories rank high on women’s must get list. It is important that women get the right accessories that can stand up to the weight of their braids, in order to accomplish a good look. There a number of easy ways a lady can accessorize her braids. Most Ugandan women opt for hair clips, elastic scrunchies a.k.a puff holders, clip on hair bows, stretchy headbands, among others. However there is also a less common and easy way to accessorize braids, by using hair combs, available in all shapes and sizes, best to wear with partial or full braid up dos. Hair pins and clips are also ideal for women who want understated embellishment in their hair style, particularly with a bun, worn towards the back of the head or a high bun. Headbands on the other hand are versatile and great for all hair styles, braided locks up and down, for both long and short. It can look completely different depending on how it is placed on the hair. These however are very quick and convenient ways to accessorize because there simply pinned and clipped on. Head wraps/ scarves are now trending , giving one a whole new look, so classy but at the same time bringing out that natural side, which is beautiful and elegant, try them out today and you will not regret. In short, hairpiece accessories are important especially for braided hair because they have the power to pull your entire look together giving your hair a new feel and look. October - December 2014

How to look after

your hair

T

Before plaiting

After braiding

Taking Braids Out

reat your hair (protein treatment is recommended especially if you are relaxed.), deep condition and moisturize prior to getting braids. If you are to oil your hair before plaiting, consider applying very little oil to your scalp so that it is not so slippery for the person plaiting it, says Kirabo Gina, a braider at Almonds salon. When plaiting take note of this; your braids should be secure but not too tight. Don’t try to braid every single strand of hair around your edges; they are way too delicate!

Oil your scalp right after the plaiting (it helps moisturize the scalp). Keep moisturizing and seal everyday or every other day. The more you moisturize and seal, the more buildup will occur. Therefore, it’s best to shampoo weekly or every other week. One week wash and treat it too using leave in and make sure it dries up so well, it is better to use the braids leave-in treatment, says Gina. Spray the braids using braids spray; it keeps them looking new and fresh. To keep your braids looking fresh, you can also re-braid the first few rows in the front.

Never leave your braids in for too long. Six weeks is the max for me. Don’t wait to have all the braids out to begin detangling. Detangling as you go will cut down on more tangles, knots and breakage. Never wash your hair after taking out the braids without detangling first. Lots of shedding should be expected because you haven’t combed your hair in weeks! Don’t freak out!

cause breakage at the root. Section your hair into four or more parts, rubber band and loosely braid each section. Secure each section with a duckbill or hair clip to keep it from hanging down. When you’re ready to shampoo, remove the clip and work one section at a time. You can unravel the braid if you want, but a rubber band will hold the section together. Focus shampooing more on your scalp and less on the braids (the lather will trickle down). Use an applicator bottle to get the shampoo between your parts and on your scalp. Diluting your shampoo will allow it to spread easily and pre-

vent it from stripping your hair. Rub your scalp gently with your fingers, not nails! When you’re done with a section, braid it back up if you did unravel it for washing purposes, and secure it with your hair clip. Remember to rinse thoroughly to remove any shampoo residue that might sit and buildup later. One section at a time, towel dry and apply your conditioner generously. This will require you to unravel each section for the time being so you can saturate every braid. With each section saturated and re-secured, place a shower cap on your head and sit under the dryer for 30-45mins. Rinse afterward.

BRAIDS

Dos and Don’ts of braid extensions It’s widely believed that braid extensions help to “grow” hair, which in part can be true. While they are certainly a great protective style that helps you retain length, here are 5 Do’s and Don’ts of Braid Extensions to keep in mind:

AFRODITE

October - December 2014

BRAIDS Braids don’t “make” or “promote”

hair growth instead they help with length retention. Every time you style and detangle there’s a risk of breakage. It just happens. When your hair is braided, you dodge the risk of mechanical breakage from manipulation. This is why braids are a great protective style.

Wearing Braids Long-Term (more

than 4-6 weeks without touch-ups) Can Decrease Length Retention. “Six weeks is the maximum I would recommend [leaving in extensions],” says Natural Hairstylist Diane Bailey. For many this is around the time that the hair begins to lock or mat. Leaving them in longer makes it difficult to detangle. It’s also good to thoroughly clean your hair and scalp without the extension to prevent infection and other conditions of the scalp.

For those who have sensitive and

thinning edges, you have a higher chance of experiencing traction alopecia or increased hair loss in those areas. It’s best that you avoid any and all tugging and tightness in this area. This is a concern if you continuously wear braids back to back without any breaks. If you already have an issue with thinning or sensitive edges braid extensions may not be the best thing for your hair.

Keep Them Loose. During my last

trip to the braiding salon there were so many beautiful braided styles being created around me. But I couldn’t help but notice that many of these women were victims of traction alopecia. If you feel that your hair is being pulled too tightly kindly ask your stylist to reduce the tension that is being applied.

I know they look pretty but the

small teeny braids (micros) put a lot of tension on the hair. This isn’t to say that you can never wear micro braids if you want, but constantly wearing them may lead to thinning hair rather than healthy length retention. Plus, its not fun taking all those tiny braids down. Which if you don’t have the patience, micro braids might not be for you. In order for your protective styling to be beneficial it must protect your hair and scalp from breakage. Otherwise, if you rough house with your hair, all of the length that you retained can easily break off. Courtesy of www.

TYPES OF BRAIDS, Pencil, It was originated from the Kiswahili kind of plait, where one used their own hair as a way to keep it neat. This kind of braid the beautician adds synthetic hair to plait.

Not only are the twisted tresses uber-stylish and easy to manage, they’re a protective style that promotes growth and healthy hair (who knew).

It was not my choice to plait my dreads or hair which ever direction one would like to take, I had an oral examination and the female panelist would be biased by my dreaded hair.

Dirt and heat, Tracy Gwambe says,

Public fall out, Brenda Nantongo says,

I hate it when they become old, the front bit starts looking dirty with the dandruff that keeps spreading. The heat is at times too much making one so uncomfortable or hard to handle. Good thing is they are multipurpose, can go for a wedding, interview, work and many different occasions.

It is cool to have braids because they make it easy, you get to do different kinds of styles in your braids, you just keep trying out new things, giving me a good look, elegant and so smashing. The one thing I hate about braids is when they start falling out, moreover in public, it is so annoying.

By Patricia Ashaba Some times I believe I have lived long enough in this world to be surprised into gasps and silent utterances but trust Ugandan ladies to pull one on you, and this time in a nice way. So there I am, being around, minding my own business, punching something on my cell when this lady with an amazing figurine for a crown on her head walks by. Oh yeah, it is braids styled up into a beautiful plait. Ladies, we no longer have any sort of reason to walk out of our houses with our braids in a plain bun or leave it hanging low. And I know you think that the braids in themselves are enough considering they give your hair a break from months of styling. Whether your braids are straight, curly, short, long or even colored, I have to encourage us to creatively learn how to style up our braids. After you’ve plaited or on your regular salon visit, you can ask your salonist to chip in one of those crazy, complicated but good looking styles that can last a while and yet still maintain that unique beautiful and sassy look for up to weeks. But ladies, there must be styles we can whip up early in the morning, during rush hour as we prepare to go for work or something of the sort. You might need to have a trick up your sleeve in case of emergencies like a party, may be a date and no time to go to the salon. We should be able to master a few simple styles for our braided hair and some of these are even quite common (at least you’ve seen a person or so adorning one or

the other). Let’s start with the common up-do bun, with this one, you have to hold your braids into a neat puff at the very top of your head, split your braids into the very center of your puff and roll it around the band holding it until all your braids are tucked under the hair band, then tie a cloth ribbon or any other sort of fancy band on top of

Crown that braid

the original band. By the way, this up-do bun doesn’t necessarily have to be in the center. It can be at the side or towards the forehead. Another we can try out is a French plait, contrary to common knowledge, French plaits have a history from anywhere around the world. In Uganda, they are popularly known as “Biswahili.” But in this case, I’m thinking about holding your braids into a French plait probably at the back of your head. You can also make two of these plaits, may be even one that goes across your head and flowing down one shoulder. Another way to add a sense of uniqueness to is by making the plait with a cloth within and the cloth goes through the entire plait as a way to adorn it. The Outstanding French Style Braids, these are extremely chic and stylish, they are not going to be out of fashion in the near future. A gorgeous thick braid, starting at your bang, wraps your head gracefully; just to be rolled up at the crown of your head. Look: it’s a crown, indeed! A Cascade of Enchanting Braids, this is a truly universal braided hairstyle. You can simply clip some braids on top or tie them up, leaving the remaining braided ends loose on your shoulders for a luxurious, time-tested look. Give them a try and be unique, with braids it is easy to come up with a different style, you can always do anything with your braids, get creative. Am out, God bless.

Braided top knot By Diana Zziwa

This is a hairstyle that can pass for any function as you rock your braids. It is simple to do for those who have long braids. Secure your hair in a high ponytail

(where you would want the bun to be) Take a small section from the pony, and braid it all the way to the bottom. Twist the remaining larger section until the entire ponytail is in a tight twist Wrap the braided hair around the base of the bun. Secure it with a hair pin.

When I was appointed International Climate Change Icon in Uganda by the British Council in 2010, I learnt so much about Climate Change and its effects. The British Council commissioned my Let’s Go Green song and video. The song did so well to the extent that it was used as one of the theme songs at the 2010 Global Climate Change summit. It was such a great honor for me and since then, I have used my music to promote the awareness of Climate Change in schools, villages and anywhere I get an opportunity. My message is simple, for us to plant more trees and keep our environment clean.

augh, and the world laughs with you; Weep, and you weep alone; For the sad old earth must borrow its mirth, But has trouble enough of its own. Sing, and the hills will answer; Sigh, it is lost on the air; The echoes bound to a joyful sound, But shrink from voicing care.

Rejoice, and men will seek you; Grieve, and they turn and go; They want full measure of all your pleasure, But they do not need your woe. Be glad, and your friends are many; Be sad, and you lose them all, There are none to decline your nectared wine, But alone you must drink life’s gall.

An old lady goes to the doctor and says, “I have this problem with frequent gas. Fortunately, the farts never smell and are always silent. As a matter of fact, I’ve farted at least 10 times since I’ve been here, and I bet you didn’t even notice!” The doctor says, “I see. Take these pills and come back next week.”

fter an elderly couple starts getting forgetful, they visit their doctor. Their doctor tells them that many people find it useful to write themselves little notes. When they get home, the wife says, “Dear, will you please go to the kitchen and get me a dish of ice cream? And maybe write that down so you won’t forget?” “Nonsense,” says the husband. “I can remember a dish of ice cream.” “Well, I’d also like some strawberries and whipped cream on it,” the wife

replies. “My memory’s not all that bad,” says the husband. “No problem -- a dish of ice cream with strawberries and whipped cream. I don’t need to write it down.” He goes into the kitchen, and his wife hears pots and pans banging. The husband finally emerges from the kitchen and presents his wife with a plate of bacon and eggs. She looks at the plate and asks, “Hey, where’s the toast I asked for?”

Whether you need to lose weight or stay where you are, your meal plan can help. People with diabetes have to take extra care to make sure that their food is balanced with insulin and oral medications (if they take them), and exercise to help manage their blood glucose levels. This might sound like a lot of work, but your doctor and/or dietitian can help you create a meal plan that is best for you. When you make healthy food choices, you will improve your overall health and you can even prevent complications such as heart disease and some cancers. There are many ways to help you follow your diabetes meal plan. Some ways are Creating your Plate or Carbohydrate Counting. These two meal planning methods are different but hopefully one is right for you.

Also, make sure your choices from each food group provide the highest quality nutrients you can find. In other words, pick foods rich in vitamins, minerals and fiber over those that are

Men Styles

Men Stylists Victor Bals is a beautician at Roy beauty parlor on Kimathi Avenue, opposite Kampala Casino, lets Afrodite Magazine into his life as a beautician.

I

Who is Victor? would say (thinks for a while) Am a calm and very determined guy, already to go the extra mile to achieve my dream.

What inspired you to become a beautician?

I did not like the kinds of haircuts people had, and I thought to myself, I can change that, do better hair cuts. On the other hand hairdressing has been a passion, which I always wanted to do. I also fancied hair owners and beauticians for the business bit, coz it seemed like a good business venture.

Do you own a salon?

Not yet opened up my own salon but am looking forward to open up my own some time,

How long have you practiced as a beautician?

This year makes it eight (8) years, since 2006, I went to a beauty school in Nairobi, to help enhance on what I had already learnt, the practical bit mostly.

Any success stories or achievements,

I have been able to travel around the country, visited most of the districts in the country, and also to other countries, like Rwanda, Kenya to work on client’s hair, which would not have happened if I was not doing this kind of job. Through my profession I have met people from all walks of life who have become friends and great clients, these people keep my profession going and aim for greatness, I have been able to build rentals in my village in Fort portal and lastly my family is well looked after.

How do you capture your clientele?

AFRODITE

October - December 2014

With hairdressing, if you are good at what you do, people will always come, because when you

work on one, they will go and tell some one else, every client I work on refers a friend to me, which has been a big contribution to the expansion of my clientele. Most of my clients are women.

Have you ever been despised for what you do, because it is believed that hairdressing is meant to be for women?

At least not to my face, I have not been looked down on for what I do, my clients truly appreciate my work and encourage me, but I have heard about the stereotyping bit of hairdressing is for women and not men.

What challenges have you faced as a beautician?

There are a number of challenges that I have faced, most being brought up by one common cause, money!! Clients expect to be charged less or the same price year in and year out, which is quite hard because prices in products keep changing and also the rent prices rise and all this needs money too, getting quality products too is difficult, due to the taxes levied on them making them so expensive on the market, and some of the products have wrong chemicals. There is unwanted competition, where by some open up just to get profits without minding about the basics needed in hairdressing, when a client visits one and are not treated as expected, most people will end up hating most of us, thinking we are all the same, which has destroyed the market.

Do you have anything else you are passionate about apart from hairdressing?

Yes! I have always wanted to be a businessman, because with a business venture, you are occupied full time.

Any last words for the youth,

People think that hairdressing is for failures, which is not the truth because it takes passion to do it, my advice to the youth today is to only turn to hairdressing if they are passionate about it but not as a way of survival.

Taking care of that

Curly hair Curls are not the sole female domain. Men too have curly hair. Nowadays, men are more fashion conscious than women. They are more conscious about their personal grooming than their female counterpart. They always want to look good; Men need too trim their curls more frequently than women.

Below are a few tips on how men can take care of their curly hair;

Y

ou must use shampoos that suit your hair. Curly hairs are a bit dry and coarse. So you need to use a shampoo that will

moisturize it. As much as possible, you must try and dry your hair naturally. Do not use any kind of blowdrying. Do not use cheap products for styling. It need not be obscenely expensive but not dirt-cheap either. Use conditioners to keep your hair moisturized. Use silicone-enhanced products to control your frizz. Always comb hair with a wide toothed comb. Hair needs to be properly cared for irrespective of gender. If you do not take care of your hair at the right time, you will lose it. If you want to have hair that is healthy and glows, then you need to take proper care of it everyday. It should be a part of your daily routine and not a single day affair.

S

having is an aspect of life many men take for granted. Shaving has its dangers, as more than a few men have died as a result of a shave (even including mafia capos). Maybe it’s the associated terminology: ingrown hairs and razor burn sound as inconvenient and even as painful as they really can be. But shaving technology has come a long way since the use of shark’s teeth and pumice stones, and doing it right leaves us looking our best and our skin as healthy as can be.

The man responsible for disposable razors survived the Great Chicago Fire,

The first thing you didn’t know about shaving is that one of America’s great catastrophes led to one of shaving’s great revolutions. According to (now widely discredited) legend, on the morning of October 8, 1871, a cow kept by a certain Mrs. O’Leary kicked over a lantern. Two days later, four square miles of Chicago had gone up in flames, including the home of a man named King Camp Gillette. The fire prompted the Gillette family’s move to New York City, where King Camp Gillette hit the road as a travelling salesman. Gillette kept his eye open for a business opportunity and, around 1900, he found it. Safety razors had been around for decades, but the need to re-sharpen the blade was costly and time-consuming. In 1905, Gillette created a highly profitable business model in which he sold his own patented safety razor for very little profit, but sold the easily replaceable steel blades also his own patent at a substantial markup. In his first year, he sold about 50 razors and 170 blades.

Things you didn’t know about

Shaving Shaving is depicted on prehistoric cave walls It’s no surprise that guys 15,000 years ago sought the cool, refreshing feeling of a nicely shaved face as much as many of us seek it today, but whereas we would celebrate a shave with aftershave, our ancestors would engage in artistic activity. According to Mental Floss magazine, in the absence of razors, prehistoric man turned to the only solutions he knew of to lose an itchy beard, shaving with “clamshells, flint knives and even shark teeth.”

Beard hair is as tough as copper wire

King Camp Gillette

Ah, so maybe this is why so many dates, girlfriends and wives suffer from pogonophobia: the fear of beards (or at least the fear of a man’s stubble and the fear of developing whisker burn). According to many sources, dry beard hair and copper wire are indeed of equal strength (when of similar diameter). Trying to imagine drawing a razor over a face of copper wire is just awful. For this reason, sort of, shaving experts recommend

using hot water prior to shaving. This has a twofold benefit: First, facial hair absorbs water, and it absorbs hot water significantly faster than cold water; and second, that water weakens the hair by as much as a third, making shaving so much easier, and the results, substantially better.

In his lifetime, a man will spend almost six months shaving

The last thing you didn’t know about shaving is how much of your time you’ll spend doing it. Assuming a guy begins shaving at around age 15 and he lives to the age of about 75, it’s (loosely) estimated that he will spend an aggregate of six months of his time here on earth facing the mirror with a razor in hand. Given six months, we guys can learn how to do anything in the world. Knowing we’ll spend five or six months shaving and assuming many of us aren’t even halfway through that time yet ought to offer incentive enough to make an effort to improve our shaving skills. Shaving Tips

that Will Give You a Closer Shave for Your Manly Grooming Ritual!

S

having is an art, so you are free to approach your shaving in any manner you prefer and find more convenient. Having said this, there are certain tips that will for sure improve your shaving experience regardless of your preferred method and which will help you to continue to enjoy your daily (or almostdaily!) grooming ritual.

Wash your face with warm water before shaving It is widely documented that warm water allows for the skin’s pores to open up as well as for the hair strands to soften, which altogether provides a smoother and easier shave., soak an unused clean cloth in the warm water and then softly press the cloth against the area of the face that will be shaving; this act prepares the face for the shaving and we have found that it not only makes the shaving easier but it also makes the facial skin more pliable and thus responsive to the shaving, which then allows for a closer shave too.

The best solution

to battle the quick dulling of a razor is to use a platinum-coated razor. The platinum filaments provide a sharper protective surface that allows for a razor to give a closer shave and to last longer.

Use a Quality Shaving Cream

Use a good mirror or two.

A Shaving Brush is one of the Best Tools

Finish off with an after Shave Lotion or Balm.

one of the best tools you can use to achieve the optimum shave is a shaving brush (as top barbers do).

Cleanse and Soothe After Shaving

After shaving, when the skin is most vulnerable, rinse the face with warm water and use a facial wash that has a high concentration of tea tree oil (a natural antiseptic that is ideal to help cleanse and protect from spots and shaving rash) and witch hazel (for its soothing, healing and astringent properties). Rinse with the coolest water that is comfortable and pat dry with a clean towel. (Don’t rub! Just pat)

Shaving can remove up to two layers of skin. There is no other regular activity that does this, which is why it is so important to use a good quality moisturizer after shaving.

The tips given you above are tips that we have found of great use to all men regardless of shaving needs or chosen facial hairstyle. As soon as you start putting these tips to use, I can assure you that you will be experiencing a very-noticeable improvement in your shaving experience and daily grooming ritual!

Health Benefits Of

YOGA

Try it once in awhile in your free time; it would be easier to get a yoga tape to help you out,

Flex Time

I

mproved flexibility is one of the first and most obvious benefits of yoga.

Strength Test

Strong muscles do more than look good. They also protect us from conditions like arthritis and back pain, and help prevent falls in elderly people. And when you build strength through yoga, you balance it with flexibility. If you just went to the gym and lifted weights, you might build strength at the expense of flexibility.

Standing Orders

Your head is like a bowling ball— big, round, and heavy. When it’s balanced directly over an erect spine, it takes much less work for your neck and back muscles to support it. Move it several inches forward, however, and you start to strain those muscles. Hold up that forward-leaning bowling

AFRODITE

ball for eight or 12 hours a day and it’s no wonder you’re tired. And fatigue might not be your only problem. Poor posture can cause back, neck, and other muscle and joint problems. As you slump, your body may compensate by flattening the normal inward curves in your neck and lower back. This can cause pain and degenerative arthritis of the spine.

Joint Account

Each time you practice yoga, you take your joints through their full range of motion. This can help prevent degenerative arthritis or mitigate disability by “squeezing and soaking” areas of cartilage that normally aren’t used. Joint cartilage is like a sponge; it receives fresh nutrients only when its fluid is squeezed out and a new supply can be soaked up. Without proper sustenance, neglected areas of cartilage can eventually wear out, exposing the underlying bone like wornout brake pads.

Spinal Rap

Spinal disks the shock absorbers between the vertebrae that can herniate and compress nerves crave movement. That’s the only way

afro-fittness guide

they get their nutrients.

Flow Chart

gets more oxygen to your cells, which function better as a result. And it thins the blood by making platelets less sticky and by cutting the level of clot-promoting

39

proteins in the blood. This can lead to a decrease in heart attacks and strokes since blood clots are often the cause of these killers.

Pressure Drop

Courtesy of yogajournal.com/health October - December 2014
