I started developing and selling ukulele in the late 90’s, and I could see then what incredible potential it had to offer. Easy to handle, simple chords, affordable — and yet, able to challenge even the most accomplished musicians.

The ukulele has found its way into more and more school music education programs, and is a staple for music store lesson programs. There are also countless ukulele clubs, groups and informal jams happening all over the world. It has come a long way and is here to stay!

Meet Ukulenny

Kala Artist Ukulenny will be your guide through most of the Learn To Play site, from ukulele basics to full-length song tutorials. Ukulenny is originally from San Diego, CA. He moved to California’s Bay Area in 2004 to attend the University of California, Berkeley, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Music with a Theatre minor. He completed his teaching credential from Cal State East Bay in 2011 and spent the next five years teaching in public schools around the Bay Area. In 2010, his passion for music education led him to start a YouTube channel with ukulele covers and tutorials.

Today, Ukulenny is a staple in the ukulele festival community and an enthusiastic advocate for the instrument out in the world, performing and educating whenever and wherever he can.

Meet Kevin Presbrey

Kala Artist Kevin Presbrey will be your fearless leader through your Learn to Play Baritone journey.

Midwestern born singer-songwriter and educator Kevin Presbrey has worked in the music industry in several capacities for twenty-plus years. After a decade of touring with his alt-rock band Painkiller Hotel, his fateful discovery of a Kala tenor ukulele in Davenport, Iowa shifted his musical path in a slightly different, very cool direction.

Kevin’s YouTube-fueled ukulele tutorial platform, AllForUke, has grown into one of the world’s largest online ukulele communities, allowing him to find a balance between sharing his affection for ukulele through performance and teaching. The mission is ultimately to bring people together through playing ukulele.

KA-15 Series

In 2005, the KA-15S arrived and quickly became the industry standard for entry-level ukulele. Before this time, there were many cheap toys and expensive custom ukuleles with very little available in between. The KA-15S made the ukulele accessible to everyone — a high-quality constructed mahogany instrument with warm, full-bodied sound at an affordable price. The KA15S is distinguished by its etched Polynesian-style Shark Teeth rosette. Due to the nature of complex grain patterns, almost every exotic wood ukulele has a certain level of variance in its appearance that makes each instrument one of a kind. Exotic Wood

Since 2005, Kala’s KA-15S has been the industry standard for entry-level ukulele. The quality, affordability, and simple design of the KA-15 Series has checked every box for a starter ukulele.

Introduced in 2020, the KA-20 Series continues this legacy. Distinguished by the same etched Polynesian-style Shark Teeth rosette, this ukulele is made of Meranti — a wood with lots of dots, dashes, and speckles with iridescence that highlights the flecked grain. Its natural satin finish lets the wood be the only focus.

Similar in tone to their mahogany counterpart, these instruments are perfect for learning on, whether in the classroom, practicing at home, or playing an acoustic performance.

Teak Tri-Top

Our Teak Tri-Top Ukulele Series is a truly striking entry in our selection of affordable ukuleles. Made primarily of teak — a tropical hardwood that has a very soft brown tone with tight, straight grain patterns and striping — the Tri-Top comes together with a triangular strip of mahogany that runs down the center, providing a red or orange contrast against the brown. Gloss Flame Maple Burst

Our Gloss Flame Maple ukuleles are highlighted by either a warm red Cherry Burst that fades from the edges into a golden center or an earthy brown Tobacco Burst that fades from the edges to a golden center. The Kala Solid Cedar Parlor Guitar is a smaller-bodied member of our guitar line with a resonant sound. This guitar caters to the songwriter, the recording artist, and even the open mic regular. Its tone is very warm, full-bodied and pleasant without being overbearing due to its cedar top and mahogany back and sides. We dressed it with a walnut binding, a herringbone purfling, and a satin finish to give it a traditional, aged look. Each Parlor Guitar comes in a gig bag.

History of the U•BASS

The Kala U•BASS ®, the original short scale bass, was designed by Owen Holt from San Jose, CA. Owen and Kala founder Mike Upton formed a friendship in 2007 and together brought the Kala U•BASS to the masses in 2009. Known for its immense low end, the compact U•BASS packs a thunderous punch and is suited for any genre of music or style of play. The portable U•BASS makes a great addition to any bassist’s arsenal. With the player always in mind, Kala strives to find a balance between innovation and tradition to support you on your musical journey.

2011

At Winter NAMM, the Hutch Hutchinson Signature U•BASS ® is introduced. In the spring, the U.S.-made California Series U•BASS arrive featuring fretted and fretless 4-string and 5-string Solid Body models. The 4-string SUB Solid Body U•BASS follows at Summer NAMM.

2013

The fretted Rumbler Mahogany U•BASS ® is released at Winter NAMM along with Silver Rumbler strings. Exotic Top Solid Body 4-string and 5-string models join the California Series at Summer NAMM, featuring Koa, Walnut, and Maple tops. A custom-designed Shadow ® pickup system with EQ and built-in tuner becomes standard on each imported U•BASS.

2007

Kala owner Mike Upton meets U•BASS ® architect Owen Holt at a luthiers convention.

2008

Mike and Owen develop and finalize the definitive design of the original U•BASS.®

2009

The fretted Solid Mahogany U•BASS ® debuts at Summer NAMM. The fretless Solid Mahogany U•BASS follows soon after, debuting at Bass Player LIVE!

2010

The fretted Solid Acacia U•BASS ® and the Solid Spruce Mahogany U•BASS in fretted and fretless models are added at Winter NAMM. The first left-handed U•BASS hits the market.

2012

Fretted Exotic Wood U•BASS ® models, including Exotic Mahogany and Spalted Maple models, are presented at Winter NAMM. The U•BASS is celebrated at the Musicians Institute with a workshop featuring Abraham Laboriel Sr., Bakithi Kumalo, and Stuart Hamm, and at U•BASS Day at Berklee College with Hutch Hutchinson accompanying Abraham and Bakithi.

2014

On the 5th Anniversary of the debut of the original U•BASS ®, the Bakithi Kumalo Signature U•BASS is announced at Winter NAMM. The California Series adds Solid Koa and Maple AcousticElectric models equipped with an exclusively designed LR Baggs ® pickup and preamp system. The LR Baggs system also becomes standard for every California Series Solid Body U•BASS. Bass Player LIVE! hosts a U•BASS clinic featuring Abraham, Bakithi, and Hutch.

2017

The redesigned California Series with updated neck, body, and string alignment are shown at Winter NAMM. The 4-string Nik West Signature Purple U•BASS ® debuts in August and is followed by the 5-string model at Bass Player LIVE! The Musical Instrument Museum begins displaying a 2012 Solid Spruce Mahogany U•BASS.

2019

The Flame Maple U•BASS ® and Solid Cedar Top Pau Ferro U•BASS are introduced at Summer NAMM. The Wanderer, Passenger, and Journeyman were updated and now all come equipped with a GraphTech TUSQ ® nut.

2021

Exclusive partnership and design with Fishman, in 2020, results in a new Fishman EQ for U•BASS ® coming standard on all higher-end basses $399 and up.

2015

The 5-string SUB Solid Body U•BASS ® along with the fretless Rumbler Mahogany U•BASS are introduced at Winter NAMM. The Museum of Making Music in Carlsbad, CA features a U•BASS in their exhibit “LOW: The Power & Beauty of Bass.”

2016

At Winter NAMM, the fretted Bubinga U•BASS ® and the fretted Exotic Mahogany U•BASS with Round Wound strings are released.

2018

At Winter NAMM, the Wanderer, Passenger, and Journeyman are introduced along with the Striped Ebony U•BASS ® in multiple options. The Exotic Mahogany line expanded with Fretless and Left-handed models, and the Rumbler, Solid Mahogany, Exotic Mahogany and Solid Spruce Top lines all received aesthetic upgrades. At Summer NAMM, Red and Black Journeyman models with Round Wound strings debut.

2020

New U•BASS ® designs for 2020 include a Tamo Ash Burl, Spalted Maple, Solid Bamboo, and the Nomad, all in fretted models. The Wanderer and Journeyman models now come with Kala Round Wounds.

2022

2022 marked the introduction of the Bakithi Kumalo Signature Acoustic-Electric U•BASS ®, as well as the Fretless Scout U•BASS ® — both offering bassists tremendous value.

Don’t expect the status quo when you pick up the most affordable bass in the U•BASS ® line. The Nomad has come in and shaken things up like no other bass before it! Made of Mahogany and stripped down to the bare essentials — this is our no frills approach to U•BASS ®. Mahogany is focused, balanced, responsive and punchy for an unabashedly resounding U•BASS ®. Meet Bakithi Kumalo

Bakithi Kumalo has been a proud endorsee of the Kala U•BASS ® for over a decade. Longtime collaborator and bassist for Paul Simon, Bakithi’s worldrenowned work for 1985’s Graceland in South Africa launched his lifelong career as a bassist, studio musician, and composer. As a new milestone, Bakithi and Kala have designed his very own Signature Acoustic-Electric U•BASS ® to help share his unique sound and philosophy as a bassist with players of any level.

No player has quite the same history and love of the U•BASS ® as Bakithi. Since first discovering our instrument through his family in 2012, he has been a vital part of its growing reputation and prevalence in the bass community. The U•BASS ® has joined Bakithi frequently with Paul Simon, both live and in the studio, as well as in his 2021 solo LP, What You Hear is What You See.

With this Signature model, Kala and Bakithi set out to create the perfect introduction to the U•BASS ® for new and experienced players alike. This fretted bass pairs a Natural Mahogany build with the Kala Round Wound U•BASS Strings for a clear and confident tone. Bamboo

Bamboo is the most sustainable choice for musical instruments. Highly renewable, bamboo regenerates quickly without being replanted — sometimes growing up to three feet per day! The straight grain of this “grass” is actually stronger than most hardwoods. Our Bamboo U•BASS ® is beautifully naturallooking with clean lines and bamboo from top to bottom — from the headstock to the fretboard to the bridge. Bamboo provides a bright tone with great volume, harmonics, projection and sustain. The strength of bamboo makes for an extremely durable and resilient U•BASS ®. Available in a fretted model.

Spalted

The Spalted Maple U•BASS ® has spalting in the wood that resembles fine point pen scribbles forming wavy black lines and streaks that contrast beautifully with the lighter colored, two-tone maple. Black binding adds a nice complement and ties into the spalting. This U•BASS ® has great dynamic range, clarity, tight lows, and ample sustain. Available in a fretted model.

Journeyman

RELATIONSHIP & DEVELOPMENT WITH FISHMAN

Exclusive Partnership and design with Fishman: Kala and Fishman co-designed an EQ curve that caters specifically to the U•BASS ® sound. We also selected the right housing that fits the bass proportionately in order to save on space and weight.

FUNCTIONALITY & CONVENIENCE

Ease of Access: The EQ controller is located on the upper bout making access comfortable and convenient.

Straps: We’ve changed from the integrated output jack and strap button and have installed a standard strap button to make strap installs less of a headache — no more loosened jacks or having to cut a deeper slit into your strap.

PERFORMANCE & DESIGN:

Improved Output: The smaller saddle footprint combined with the optimum positioning improves downward pressure from the strings and makes sure the pressure is only being sent to the piezo and not anything else.

Sound: More dynamic range with an active 3-band EQ. This allows the import bass to be more versatile like our USA Solid Body. You can make it bright and poppy, or deep like a standup bass by cutting and/or boosting high, mid, and low frequencies.

Saddle & Pickup: Going back to a more traditional piezo and saddle set up where the saddle is now independent of the piezo. The saddle is made of GraphTech TUSQ ® in order to compliment the TUSQ Nut. The independent saddle also allows users to get their action dialed in.

Intonation: Intonation is now improved because we’ve adjusted the scale length ever so slightly to reduce sharp notes by angling the saddle.

Rumbler

The Kala Rumbler was designed to be “just right.” It sits between the more inexpensive U•BASS ® and higher end models. Created to be its own thing, the Rumbler comes with custom Silver Rumbler polyurethane strings, a sturdy build, simple appointments, and is still heavy on the low end. Great for recording, playing in an ensemble or on stage — the Rumbler includes a Deluxe Padded Gig Bag. Available in a fretted model.

Exotic Mahogany

The Exotic Mahogany Acoustic-Electric U•BASS® was introduced in 2012 and quickly became our best-selling model. Look no further for enormous low end: this model captures the signature upright bass sound that the U•BASS ® is known for with the added visual flair of its “tiger-stripe” exotic mahogany body.
