Kumba still going strong Benneli Olivier Van der Walt ON 30 July the chief executive officer (CEO) of Anglo-American’s Kumba Iron Ore, Norman Mbazima, attended a networking brunch at the Sishen Mine’s auditorium. He used the opportunity to express his condolences to the family and friends of a Sishen employee who had lost his life earlier this year at the mine. He continued to expand on Kumba Iron Ore’s interim results. Although the recent market was flooded with iron ore, Kumba Iron Ore still focuses on exemplarity safety and production figures. The Kumba mines are still
aligned with their projected business plan and maintain a very good profit margin. The employees of Kumba Iron Ore are the biggest stakeholders in the company. Further stakeholders include Exxaro and community development projects. Kumba Iron Ore is one of the largest contributors to the government fiscals. He also mentioned that he was pleased with the healthy relationships that the various mines had with their local communities. Kumba Iron Ore is up to the challenge of waste movement at their respective mines, with intensive monitoring of waste water dumping and concurrent rehabilitation of mine waste sites.

KALAHARI BULLETIN, DONDERDAG 7 AUGUSTUS 2014
Road safety starts with every driver WITH the death toll rising on the country’s roads due to reckless driving, an effort must be made to curb such irresponsible behaviour. A recent death occurred in Kathu where a vehicle collided with a tree due to a young man’s reckless driving. The driver died on the scene. Despite more than 840 road blocks and 3 800 arrests for traffic infringements during the end-of-year holiday season in 2013, the death toll on South Africa’s roads has changed little from 2012, with 1 357 people losing their lives between 1 December 2013 and 7 January 2014. Government-led road safety and safety awareness campaigns over the past five years have yielded little progress. There are several manners of reckless and irresponsible driving. This includes: ) Speeds too high for conditions, especially, during inclement weather and at
night; ) Dangerous, reckless and inconsiderate driving, particularly barrier line infringements. ) Abuse of alcohol by drivers and pedestrians. ) Fatigue. ) A lack of vehicle fitness, particularly tyre failure and defective brakes. ) Pedestrian negligence (jay walking, walking on freeways, not visible at night and drunken walking). Transport minister Dipuo Peters said that the government was planning to revoke the driver’s licences of reckless motorists who breach the rules of the road. “One of the instruments that we are going to use is to make sure that people lose their licence to drive because they are licensed to drive, but not to kill. We are saying if you are reckless, you are not going to be allowed to drive, because you are going to contribute to the increase of road
carnage.” The minister urged road users and stakeholders to play their part to reduce road accidents and deaths, change road user behaviour, ensure voluntary compliance with road traffic rules and make road safety part of everyday life. It is interesting and unsettling to note that the murder rate in South Africa is very similar to the road accident fatality rate. While the murder rate in South Africa is inexcusably high and approximately five times that of the world average, it evokes anger and emotion while publicly there is little or no emotion evoked by our road accident rate. This is despite the fact that every road user in South Africa can play a part in reducing the road accident rate. Perhaps this is because it is easier to point fingers and apportion blame rather than to accept responsibility.

Baie mense het al vir my gevra hoekom ek so baie lees. Sinneloos. Totdat my dogtertjie, wat net so lief vir lees is, vir my vra hoekom óns so lief vir lees is.

Forum’s focus on schools THE Gamagara Development Forum (GDF) has prioritised education as its top priority focus area. In this regard, the GDF invested in the gr. 12 learners of Gamagara by hosting winter school programmes during the school holidays at Gamagara High School and Langberg High School in the Gamagara Local Municipality (GLM). This programme is in corporation with John Taolo Gaetsewe Developmental Trust (JTG-DT) and the Department of Education. The GDF’s goals and objectives are to focus efforts and resources to serve the most vulnerable beneficiaries in the designated areas of operation to initiate a change to outcomes-based interventions, focusing on catalysing an inclusive economy for all beneficiaries, to maximise the collaborative efforts with government, agencies of state and like-minded non-governmental and community-based organisations, and take a greater leadership role in advocacy and implementing initiatives hence this initiative was implemented. This initiative was done with the objective of assisting the gr. 12 learners to improve their matric results, assist them to qualify for the GDF bursary scheme and to increase the bursary intake for 2015. This was done in coherence with the recent campus tour and a career guidance at the University of the Free State (UFS) in Bloemfontein that GDF organised for both the gr. 12 learners of Gamagara High School and Langberg High School. This was done to mostly urge them to study harder and to ensure that their matric results qualify them to go to a university and also qualifies them to get a bursary at GDF. Lepulane Maboshego, the CEO of the GDF, said that this was an ongoing initiative, as the GDF would continue to try and combat the lack of skills and knowledge within the Gamagara area. It will continue to ensure that high school learners obtain great results, mostly the gr. 12s in the GLM. He said that GDF wanted to encourage the learners to study hard and he said that GDF also wanted to encourage the community of Gamagara and not just the learners to be a reading community. Tebogo Bodumele, project manager: Education and Skills Development, added by making reference to a programme that “Mine is Education” was currently running on Kurara FM in partnership with GDF, JTG-DT, SIOC-cdt and the Department of Education, which is a prescribed literature review programme for gr. 12 learners on Dr John Kani’s book, Nothing but the truth. The programme is broadcast every Saturday from 15:00 until 16:00 on Kurara FM. He concluded by encouraging the learners to come and collect the bursary applications from the GDF offices, the GDF website www.gdf-trust.co.za and at the GLM at the youth centre.

Foto: Verskaf
