Quadbike stolen THE Kathu police are investigating a case of stolen property. A motorcycle (quadbike) was stolen at 33 Rooihout Street in Kathu on 19 October. The theft took place between 22:00 and 06:00. The model of the motocycle is a Suzuki LTZ400. Anyone with information can contact the Kathu police on 053-723-9120.

Strikke bekyk DIE Kathu-polisie ondersoek ’n saak van onwettige jag. Die Kathu-polisie is op 22 Oktober deur die toesighouer meegedeel strikke is in die wildkamp op die Kalahari-jaglandgoed gestel. Karkasse van diere wat in die strikke verstrengel geraak het, is gevind. Op die toneel was ’n waterbok-, koedoebulen sebrakarkas. Enigiemand met inligting kan die speurders van die Kathu-polisiekantoor by 053-723-9125 bel.

Suspects arrested ) THE Kathu police are investigating a case of stolen property. Three suspects were arrested by WO Godfrey Motlogewla and Sgt Kabelo Jonas on the N14 road near Kathu on 17 October at approximatley 02:40. They made the arrest after investigating a Ford bakkie with fencing and corrugated iron on the back. The suspects were not able to give a reasonable explanation for the property and were arrested. ) The Kathu police are investigating a case of possession of suspected stolen property. WO Alan Dalton was alerted by the Gamagara Scrap Dealers in Kathu that a person had tried to sell copper cable. Dalton went to the scene and found 6,2 kg of copper cable which belonged to Transnet. The suspect was arrested for possession of stolen property.

Building design awarded THE Sioc Community Development Trust is a unique trust that aims at developing prosperity and sustainability in the Kathu community. The trust’s building was designed by Cube Architects who received an award for the outstanding design of the building. The brief was to design an office building which would house the Gamagara Development Forum (GDF) and a training facility, as well as provide office space to lease. The design had to incorporate skills transfer and job creation to support the local community of Kathu. Conceptually the building was envisioned to be rooted in the context and culture of Kathu. The semi-arid landscape of Kathu has very special and prominent features, namely the heavy steriotomic landscape versus the light tectonic camel thorn trees. These two elements generated the form-giving of the building. Heavy rammed earth walls create the north and western edges of the building and a light tree-like canopy forms the roof. The rammed earth construction was specifically chosen for its climatic benefits, but also its social benefits. This construction method had the advantage of a skill transfer programme, which empowered a small sector of the local community who were involved. The proposed office building is situated towards the north-east corner of the site – this allows for good public visibility. To achieve privacy from the shopping mall on the left, the parking lot was

introduced. The entrance picks one up from the western parking lot. The building is wrapped around a courtyard which allows both wings of the building to receive natural northern light. It also creates a protected outside area away from the prevailing winds. The hot summers are addressed with the large roof overhangs creating shade on the walls, cooling the walls down and transmitting cool air into the interior. During the winter the sun is at a lower angle and heats up the rammed earth walls transmitting warmth into the interior. The Sioc CDT building was generated out of the landscape, climate and the social situation of the Northern Cape.

Poor service a disgrace THE Gamagara Municipality has recently received a lot of bad publicity surrounding poor service delivery. Numerous residents of Kathu, Deben and Mapoteng have voiced their dissatisfaction with the way that the municipality runs the areas under its management. It seems like there is an attitude of lethargy when it comes to responding to complaints from the community. Sewage and water issues are ignored while tax-paying members of society have to struggle with unsanitary living conditions and high water bills. Queries to the municipality are blatantly ignored or never followed up. A recent effort was made by the municipality to clean up the main roads in and around Kathu, yet there are numerous illegal dumping sites in town that have not received any attention from the municipality in years. The way that community members’ telephone queries are handled are shocking. It is near impossible to speak to a municipal employee at technical services. Most of the Kathu community have to resort to physically going to the municipal building, just to be informed that the relevant employee is not availa-

ble. Recently there was a serious shortage of prepaid electricity in Kathu. Numerous residents could not access the necessary electricity for their homes or businesses. The residents of Deben have been struggling with unsanitary sewage problems for years. Their plights have also fallen upon deaf ears. They receive lip service and nothing concrete has been done to better their situation. Conditions like those lead to serious illnesses and general discontent among the residents that are supposed to be looked after by the municipality. There are also allegations of the illegal dumping of Kathu’s rubbish and refuse on the outskirts of Deben. This issue has to date not been resolved. Mapoteng residents wallow in rubbish and unsanitary conditions. If not for the local mines’ involvement in the area in the upliftment of theses poor communities, nothing would be done to better the general living conditions. It is a sad state of affairs when community members have a better chance to talk to reporters at the local newspapers, than actually speaking to a Gamagara municipal employee.

Hoewel dit twee uiteenlopende geleenthede is, het dit tog baie in gemeen. Albei geleenthede is vol emosie en dit kom pragtig in die foto’s na vore. Op die Klein Interjol en Groot Interjol kan ’n mens ná die tyd duidelik op die foto’s sien wat elke kind gevoel, gedink en ervaar het. Die pyn van onder in die skrum lê en die ekstase wanneer ’n drie gedruk is. Die frustrasie wanneer ’n fout begaan is en die blydskap wanneer ’n span wen. In ’n kleuterskoolkonsert ervaar ’n mens net soveel emosie. Kinders het nog nie geleer om ’n front voor te hou soos grootmense nie. Hulle is werklik opgewonde om Mamma in die gehoor raak te sien en waai met hul hele lyf vir Mamma en Pappa.

Hulle sing uit volle bors saam, dans uitbundig saam, lag uit hul mae vir mekaar en raas baie ernstig met die stoute maatjies. ’n Mens kan duidelik op elke gesiggie sien hoeveel hulle dit geniet. Grootword is só wreed, dit maak ’n mens moeg, laat ’n mens stres, en eindelik het ’n mens al die spontane emosies van jou kinderdae verloor. Ek sien dit elke dag wanneer ek mense afneem. Sê vir kinders om te glimlag en hulle glimlag en hul gesiggies verhelder; sê vir ’n grootmens om te glimlag en in die meeste gevalle word die mondhoeke net so effens gelig. In die rolprent Eat, Pray, Love sê die een karakter lag bring net positiewe energie en jaag alles wat lelik is weg en daarom moet ons glimlag. Glimlag met ons oë, ons gesig en ons hart.

Drank wortel van kwaad Pastoor Phil van Vuuren KURUMAN met sy warboel van bedrywighede het in ’n nes van misdadigers en immorele waardes verval. Drankmisbruik in ons gemeenskap is maar net een van die groot oorsake daarvan dat misdaad, gesinsgeweld en huweliksverbrokkeling toeneem. Dit is asof baie inwoners en hooggeplaastes altyd die onderwerp wil vermy en die feite nie op hul naam genoem wil hê nie. Misbruik is wanneer jy nie meer jouself kan handhaaf nie en nie omgee vir diegene rondom jou nie. Jy het respek vir jou gesin en medemens verloor. Die Skrif maan ons duidelik in Ef. 5:18: Moenie dronk word van wyn nie – daarin is losbandigheid; maar word met die Gees vervul. Losbandig word in die Handboek van die Afrikaanse Taal omskryf as ongebonde, ligsinnig – veral in morele opsig

sedeloos, onsedelik. Spr. 20:1 lui: Die wyn is ’n spotter, en sterk drank ’n lawaaimaker; en elkeen wat daardeur bedwelmd raak, is nie wys nie. Die beskikbaarheid en hoveelhede drank wat uit die drankwinkels vloei, is absoluut abnormaal. Die Bybel leer ons baie mooi wat die gedrag is van iemand wat in drankmisbruik verval het. Spr. 23:29-32: By wie is “Ag!”; by wie is “Wee my!”; by wie is getwis; by wie is geklaag; by wie is wonde sonder oorsaak; by wie is dofheid van oë? By die wat láát opbly by die wyn, by die wat ingaan om gemengde drank te proe. Kyk nie na die wyn as dit rooiagtig lyk, as dit sy glans gee in die beker, glad na binne gly

nie: op die end byt dit soos ’n slang en spuug gif uit soos ’n basilisk (adder). Ons kan nie werklikhede wegpraat en ignoreer of verplaas met argumente nie. Ons parke, erwe en sypaadjies word met drankbottels besaai wat net oral uitgegooi word. Dit alleen is ’n getuie teen hierdie euwel. Indien jy weet jy kan jou nie handhaaf nie en in misbruik verval en jou gedrag daardeur geraak word, los dit uit, moenie daaraan raak nie. Efesiers 5:18 se gedeelte sê: Word met die Gees vervul. Dit is net God deur Sy gees wat ons gemeenskap kan red, kan skoonmaak. Wanneer ons met Sy gees vervul sal word, sal ons gesinne versoen kan word, huwelike herstel kan word. En ons ’n gemeenskap word waar reg en geregtigheid gehandhaaf kan word.

Volgende week word die finaliste in die struktuurkompetisie in die Kalahari-Bulletin bekend gemaak. Die 12 wenners van die jaar gaan om ’n wegbreeknaweek meeding. Die fotograaf van die wenfoto van die jaar, wat uit die 12 maand-wenfoto’s gekies word, gaan ’n naweek vir vier mense in een van die NC Famous Lodges wen. Uit die 12 wenners gaan die foto wat die meeste likes op Facebook kry, ’n naweek vir twee mense in een van die NC Famous Lodges wen. Best in mining exhibited Benneli Olivier Van der Walt ON 23 October the Travelling Mining and Engineering Exhibition brought exhibitors from across the country to Kathu for the annual event. More than 50 exhibitors in the mining sector gave prospective

buyers and contractors the chance to sample their services and products at the trade show. The exhibition is an annual highlight in the mining community of Kathu and its surrounding areas. The exhibition travelled across the Northern Cape.

Expo in Kathu the first of its kind Benneli Olivier Van der Walt ON 24 October MTE held its first ever Building Services Expo in Kathu. This is the first expo of this nature, and Kathu was chosen for its perfect location given the

current expansions to the town. The concept of the expo is to bring all the different building services, which include plumbing, construction, electrical services and airconditioning, to one location.

Gesoek: iemand om patetiese diens in die bek te ruk PATETIESE DIENS: OP 17 Oktober het ek die Gamagara-munisipaliteit 21 keer gebel en elke keer na die skakelbord deurgekom waar ek gevra het die skakelbordoperateur moet my na die waterafdeling deursit. Elke keer het die telefoon net gelui. Die rede vir my oproep was die

buitensporige bedrag wat hulle reken my waterrekening is nadat ek dit laas maand betaal het. Twee weke van die maand was hier niemand by my huis nie en tog is dit meer as R5 000.

My meter werk al langer as twee maande nie meer nie. Toe ek die munispaliteit gevra het om te kom kyk omdat ek ook nie buite water het nie, is gesê dit is nie hul probleem nie en ek moet ’n loodgieter laat kom. Ek het ’n loodgieter ontbied. Hy het gesê hy mag nie daar waar die probleem is, werk nie, want dit is munisipale terrein.

Weer het ek die munisipaliteit gebel en gevra wat ek moes doen. Ek wag steeds vir iemand wat hulle sou stuur om te kom kyk. Uit desperaatheid het ek die skakelbordoperateur gevra om my na die munisipale bestuurder deur te sit sodat hy kon gaan kyk wat by die waterrekeningafdeling aangaan dat ek nie deurkom nie. Hoe kan ek so ’n hoë waterreke-

ning kry as my meter nie eens werk nie? Ek het ’n bedrag elektronies aan die munisipaliteit oorbetaal om in krediet te kom. Dit wys glad nie op my staat nie. Hulle antwoord ook nie die foon om my te help nie. Waar gaan dit ophou? By wie kan ons hulle aangee wat eindelik ons gemeenskap se hande kan vat, want so kan dit nie voortgaan nie.

Skiet van dier ontstel stigting Charné Kemp TWEE uur nadat lede van die Landmark Foundation gekom het om ’n boer in dié omgewing met luiperdskade te help het die boer die luiperdwyfie doodgeskiet. Dr. Bool Smuts, direkteur van die Landmark Foundation, wat luiperdnavorsing doen, was platgeslaan en diep teleurgesteld oor dié optrede. Nie net het hulle die boer pas vergoeding vir veeverliese aangebied nie; hy was ook bewus van die luiperds in die omgewing wat halsbande as deel van ’n navorsingsprojek dra. “Die boer beweer hy het die luiperd se oë in die nag vir dié van ’n jakkals aangesien. Hy was saam met sy seun op ’n jagtog toe die luiperd geskiet is. “Ons is in die Wes-Kaap en het van daar na die navorsingsgebied in die Noord-Kaap gery nadat dié boer luiperdskade by ons aangemeld het. “Ons was net twee uur in die omgewing toe die luiperd geskiet is. Ek is baie teleurgesteld. Dit is onverklaarbaar dat iemand na iets skiet wanneer hy nie weet wat dit is nie.” Die plaas waarop die voorval gebeur het, is rivierlangs sowat 50 km suid van die Augrabieswaterval. Die vrekte van die jong luiperdwyfie, wat in die fleur van haar lewe was, is ’n verlies vir die luiperdbevolking. Dié diersoort is kritiek bedreig en getalle verminder jaarliks weens konflik met

boere. “Nie net moet die halsband nou herprogrammeer word nie; maande se navorsing, moeite en koste is verlore.” Smuts en sy span het reeds sowat 18 maande se navorsing in die Tutwa-wildreservaat (wat 17 000 ha groot is) versamel. Plaaslike boere is ingelig oor die projek, omdat luiperds ook op aangrensende plase loop. Oral is kameras opgestel om luiperds af te neem. Hulle het vasgestel daar is ses luiperds. “Ons begroot geld om boere vir veeskade weens luiperdaanvalle te vergoed. Al die boere in die omgewing weet van ons navorsing. “Aanvanklik wou ons weet hoeveel luiperds daar is en waar hulle beweeg. Die eindelike doel is om vreedsame naasbestaan tussen boer en diere te bewerkstellig deur navorsing en inligting te deel. Ons was net in die derde fase van die projek toe die ongelukkie voorval plaasgevind het.” Die Landmark Foundation wil boere wat eties boer ook ’n handelsmerk gee wat hul werkpraktyke bevestig. Boere kan daarom premium-pryse vir hul produkte kry. Lesego Pule, woordvoerder van die departement van natuurbewaring, sê hulle ondersoek die saak. As hul ondersoek toon die boer het roekeloos en nalatig opgetree, sal hulle optree. “Dit is onaanvaarbaar om luiperds vrek te skiet, of dit opsetlik was of nie.”

BRUCE MISSING, ’n navorsingsveldwerker van die Landmark Foundation, hou die dooie luiperd vas. Die luiperdwyfie is deur ’n boer naby Augrabies op sy plaas doodgeskiet. Die luiperd het ’n halsband gedra en was deel van die Landmark Foundation se navorsingsprojek.

Skool vereer sy presteerders Benneli Olivier Van der Walt OP 24 Oktober het die Hoërskool Kathu sy prysuitdeling gehou. Meiring Botha, hoof van die skool, het die leerlinge, ouers, eregaste en onderwysers verwelkom. Alumni van die skool, dr. James Walker en dr. Christel van Deventer, het die geleentheid bygewoon. Daar is pryse vir buite-skoolaktiwiteite

en nie-akademiese aktiwiteite oorhandig. Daar is ook pryse vir sport, akademie, ambassadeurs, ystereerbewyse, 15 topakademie, die veelsydigste leerlinge en die dux-leerling van 2014 oorhandig. Die skool se nuwe uitvoerende raad vir 2015 is die aand aangewys. Die geleentheid is met die sing van die skoollied afgesluit.

ALTESAAM 83 balletdansers van Kathu en Kuruman het op 17 Oktober hul eksamen in Kathu afgelê. Al die dansers het die eksamen geslaag en het goed gevaar. Uitste-

kende prestasies is deur Adina van Wyk en Bea Wiid behaal. Altesaam 11 studente het hul senior eksamens afgelê en geslaag. Die eksaminator was Annelize Lazenby.
