THE Kathu police arrested five Mozambique nationals suspected of stealing. The arrest was made on 23 November at approximately 23:35 on the N14 road outside Kathu. Sgt Ben Eiman and Const. Tebogo Molale searched a suspicious-looking Toyota Hi-Ace kombi and arrested the occupants. The suspects are part of an ongoing investigation regarding the theft of a white Suzuki quad bike at 5 Silwerboom Street in Kathu. The dogs on the premises were poisoned prior to the theft. The Kathu police request the community to come forward with any information that could assist them in fighting crime. It is everyone’s responsibility, and together a difference can be made.

Kumba cares about people ANGLO AMERICAN’S business unit Kumba Iron Ore continues to make a real difference in the lives of the Tsantsabane community. This community has grown significantly and with this growth the social skills within the community have also grown. Health is one of Kumba’s key focus areas as was demonstrated in the local community of the Kolomela Mine in Postmasburg with its blanket donations. SANParks Klerksdorp is an non-governmental organisation

(NGO) affiliated with the South African National Council for Alcohol and Drug Dependency (Sanca) and is providing mentoring services to a new local NGO called Tsantsabane Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services (TADS). Kolomela annually supports the TADS making it accessible to the Tsantsabane Local Municipal Area community members experiencing problems with drug and substance abuse. SANParks (Sanca) also runs a rehabilitation centre in

Klerksdorp and allows the TADS to make use of their facilities by sending their in-patient clients from Postmasburg there for rehabilitation. In October SANParks held their annual general meeting where the Kolomela Mine handed over 20 blankets. These blankets will be used for clients who were referred for rehabilitation by the TADS. SANParks (Sanca) and the TADS board members received the blankets on behalf of the clients.

Leerlinge kom eerste – Botha Benneli Olivier Van der Walt MEIRING BOTHA (53) is aan die stuur van een van die top-hoërskole in die distrik. Die Hoërkool Kathu lewer reeds jare lank top- akademiese en sportsterre op en hou beslis die dorp se naam hoog. Botha het in Dundee in KwaZuluNatal grootgeword. Hy het in 1979 aan die Hoërskool Sarel Cilliers in Koppies gematrikuleer. “Die wêreld daar is grasgroen met baie berge en damme. Die gemeenskap is Afrikaans- en Engelssprekend en die inwoners is nog goeie, plattelandse mense.” Hy het sy tersiêre loopbaan aan die Universiteit van Natal (UN) met ’n industriëlekunste-graad begin. Daarna is hy na die Universiteit van die Vrystaat (UV) om bedryfskennis en grafika te gaan studeer. Hy was in sy finale jaar ook ’n assistent-dosent. Botha was twee jaar lank in die weermag aan die Infanterieskool in Oudtshoorn verbonde waar hy die rang van luitenant behaal het. Hy was in 1985 in die grensoorlog by Operasie Zeppelin betrokke. Ná sy diensplig het hy aan die eerste skool, die Dale-kollege in King Williams Town, gaan skoolhou. Hier was hy hoof van die metaalwerk-en-tekeninge-afdeling. Dié skool is steeds een van die tien topskole in Suid-Afrika. Dit is waar hy sy tradisionele onderwyswaardes geleer het en waarby hy vandag steeds hou. In 1988 is hy na Vryburg om met die ontwikkeling van die nuwe

Sy hou ons almal rustig.” Sy hou ook aan die Hoërskool Kathu skool. ’n Mens kan sien Botha se drie kinders is sy trots. Sy oudste, sy dogter Riané (29), is

die MIS- (bestuursinligtingstelsel) offisier aan die ingenieursafdeling van die Khumani-myn naby Kathu. Sy middelste kind, Gerrit, studeer aan sy doktorsgraad aan die Noordwes-Universiteit se Potchefstroom-kampus. Hy is ’n dosent en is in die laaste jaar van sy navorsing. Sy jongste seun, Mardus, is “nie die soetste seun in die land nie, maar presteer nogtans baie goed”. Botha is baie trots op sy jongste seun se prestasies as gr. 11-leerling aan die Hoërskool Kathu. Mardus is onder die skool se tien topleerlinge en is deel van die skool se uitvoerende komitee vir 2015. “Ek is baie trots op my kinders. Hulle het so baie op ’n jong ouderdom bereik.” Botha word binnekort die eerste keer oupa. “Ons is baie opgewonde en beplan om die kleindogter, Ta-lea, verskriklik te bederf.” In sy vrye tyd boer Botha met Jack Russell-terriërs. Hy wys trots ’n foto van sy “stoetbrakkie”, Buks. Verder werk hy in die tuin. “Ek loop mos nie graag rond nie,” sê hy. Botha is beslis ’n kinder-mens. “Ek geniet die leerlinge vreeslik. Dit is vir my lekker om te sien hoe hulle gedy.” In sy laai hou hy ’n bedankingsbrief aan hom van ’n oudleerling om hom te herinner aan watter positiewe impak ’n goeie onderwyser in sy leerlinge se lewe kan maak. “Dit is waaroor die onderwys is: Die kinders kom eerste.”

Kerstyd tyd vir ontspan ALMAL sien uit na ’n welverdiende ruskans gedurende die feestyd. Vakansiereëlings is reeds getref en die tasse word gepak, die troeteldiere se huisvesting uitgesorteer en reëlings met die tuindienste getref. Almal is opgewonde en kan nie wag om in die motor te spring en na hul vakansiebestemming te vertrek nie. Maar die feestyd is nie vir almal ’n aangename tyd nie. Baie mense word in dié tyd aan ’n slegte gebeurtenis herinner. Die verlies van ’n geliefde is een so ’n voorbeeld. Sommige moet Kersfees en Nuwejaar alleen deurbring. Bejaardes is in aftreeoorde en hul familie het van hulle vergeet. Ander is gedurende die jaar geskei of moes verhuis. Kersfees en familiebyeenkomste kan ’n baie stresvolle tyd van die jaar wees. Familieverhoudings is ingewikkeld en dit veroorsaak ook baie spanning. Dit is boonop ’n tyd waar ekstra geld bestee word. So, hoe oorleef ’n mens die feestyd? Hier is ’n paar wenke om die feestyd te oorleef en te geniet: ) As jy ’n traumatiese ervaring gedurende die jaar beleef het, is dit nóú die tyd om by ’n familielid of vriende te wees. Dit is ook ’n tyd om aandag te gee aan familie, vriende en ander wat in dié tyd alleen is. Doen jou deel om dit vir almal ’n gemaklike, streslose tyd te maak.

Jesus wys ons nuwe wêreld van vrede Ds. André de Villiers VREDEMAKERS: Burgers van ’n nuwe Koninkryk – Jes. 11:1-8. In die Kersfeestyd kom die begrip vrede onvermydelik in ons gedagtes op. Die engele se openingswoorde aan die herders is: “Vrede op aarde, in die mense ’n welbehae.” In Joh. 3:16 hoor ons: Want so lief het God die wêreld gehad dat Hy sy eniggebore Seun gestuur het, sodat elkeen wat in Hom glo, nie verlore sal gaan nie, maar die ewige lewe sal hê. Dit is asof dié twee gedeeltes ons wil laat teruggaan na die paradystoestand. Terug na die begin, voordat daar sonde was. Jesaja se beeld is aangrypend. Vanweë die geseënde regering van die Vredevors sal daar geen roof en moord meer wees nie, geen onmin, geen verdeeldheid nie – in die diereryk, asook die menseryk. Hulle wat mekaar gewoonlik byt en opvreet, sal nou in vrede saamleef. Die Hebreeuse werkwoord wat dié vrede aandui, beteken: om as vreemdeling êrens te vertoef, maar soos ’n gas beskerm te word. Die profeet sê dus die kalf staan langs die leeu, maar in plaas

daarvan dat die leeu sy krag gebruik om die kalf te verskeur gebruik hy dit om die kalf teen gevaar te beskerm. In Suid-Afrika hoor ons daagliks van roof, moord en onmin in ons huise en gemeenskap. Ons weet hoeveel verdeeldheid daar oor belangrike sake bestaan. Dink jou in hoe wonderlik dit sou wees as mense hiervan bevry kon word. Sou ons nie laag buig voor ’n heerser wat dít bewerkstellig nie? Die woorde: Iemand uit die geslag van Isai sal ’n vaandel wees vir die volke, beteken daar sal iemand wees wat soos ’n teken opgerig is en die mense na hom toe sal trek. Gesien uit die Nuwe Testament weet ons dit is Jesus Christus. Deur Hom weet ons God se beloftes word waar. Hy is die Een wat ons nuwe oë en harte gee sodat ons kan sien hoe die nuwe wêreld lyk waarin ons (moet) lewe. Is dit nie die rol van die kerk, ek en jy, dat ons ’n nuwe gemeenskap in die wêreld moet wees nie?

Die res van ons byt vir die laaste stukkie maand nog vas en droom al drome oor daardie eerste oggend van laat slaap. Saam met die feestyd kom die gewone Kersfeesplanne. Dié jaar het ons besluit om vroeg te begin soek na die regte geskenk vir ons seun. Hy is nou op die ouderdom waar storieboeke en Lego baie gewild is. So Vader Krismis sal moet plan maak. Die Kersfees is ook die eerste een waar hy gehelp het om die Kersboom te versier. “Sodat Vader Krismis weet waar om my present te sit.” Saam met Seun se geskenkversoeke besluit ons om sommer al die res se geskenke ook te kry. Die skoonouers se geskenke moet Mosselbaai toe gestuur word. Ons het tot ’n internasionale pakkie wat na my skoonsuster in Skotland gepos moet word. Dit is haar eerste Kersfees ver weg

van die huis af en daar is niks soos ’n geskenk van die Suid-Afrikaanse Vader Krismis nie. My ouers en broers se geskenke word sommer in een groot boks gegooi en na Pretoria toe gepos. Nou begin die geskenk-kies-proses. Die skoonouers is maklik. “Biltong, baie biltong.” My ouers is ’n bietjie moeiliker. “Ag, enigiets.” Ek het al gaan soek vir ’n “ag, enigiets”, maar kon dit nog nooit in ’n winkel opspoor nie. Dan is daar die tradisie van handgemaakte Kerskaartjies. Sedert ek ’n kind was, het ons nog altyd ons eie Kerskaartjies gemaak. Dié tradisie is aan my seun oorgedra. Vanjaar het ons op waterverf besluit. Verlede jaar was dit vetkryt, maar ek wil nie weer ná Kerskaartjies die meeste van ons mure was nie.

Werknemers met vliegrit bederf DIE Kathu-vliegklub het die ESCO-Kathuwerknemers en hul gesinne met vlugte oor die dorp bederf. Die vlugte was deel van die ESCO-gesinsdag. Op 29 November het vier vlieëniers van die vliegklub die 18 werknemers en hul gesinne in ligte vliegtuie oor Kathu laat rondvlieg. Die vliegtuie het van die Sishen-lughawe vertrek. ESCO-Kathu het ook verversings aan die opgewonde passasiers verskaf.

VLIEGSAKKIES is vir ’n noodgeval aan die senuweeagtige passasiers verskaf.

Skenkers kan op Woensdae van 08:00 tot 19:00 na die kliniek kom. Bloed kan ook op Vrydae van 09:00 tot 17:00 in die kliniek geskenk word. Die kliniek is in Rietbokstraat in die Ou Mutual-gebou langs die OK Furniture. Om ’n bloedskenker te word moet ’n mens tussen 16 en 65 jaar oud wees en ’n veilige seksuele leefstyl lei. THE Raubex company cares about their neighbouring community’s children. They recently held a safety competition for the learners of the Sesheng Intermediate School near Kathu. The competition entailed a colouring competition for the learners. They completed colouring tasks on pedestrian and home safety. The Raubex operations are close to the school. They have taken great trouble to protect the local children from deep excavations and construction vehicles. The winners were announced on 24 November. Biokanyo Bacano won the first place, Thabo Kolwane came second and Biopelo Shuping came third in the overall colouring competition. Kabelo Serati won the prize for the most creative entry.

BIOKANYO BACANO is ready for his first helicopter ride. All the winners won a helicopter ride over Kathu. Although the winners were a bit nervous at first, they enjoyed the trip immensely. “I am going to become a pilot,” said Bacano after his first flight. Eben Potgieter of Raubex said

this had been a humbling experience and that the company was impressed with the level of skill shown in some of the entries. The over-all grade competition winners will be announced in December where learners will win trips to Kimberley.

Artikels te kies en keur op mark DIE Kathu-gemeenskap het die hitte op 29 November getrotseer om die Kathu-Kersmark by te woon. Ongeveer 30 stalletjies met iets van alles vir elkeen se smaak het op die mark sake gedoen. Uitstallers het tot van Upington gekom om hul ware op die mark te verkoop. Die Goue Gerwe het oudergewoonte pannekoek verkoop, terwyl Wynand en Marelise van Rensburg spookasem verkoop het. Babaklere, bonsai-bome en kunswerke is ook van die hand gesit. Die volgende mark sal aan die einde van Maart 2015 in die Tshimo Gardens in Kathu plaasvind.

Die verrigtinge begin om 09:00 met Charl Saunderson wat die diens gaan lei. Botha sal ook in die Geloftediens optree.

Verheug oor groot prys BUCO KATHU het op 1 Desember die algehele wenner in sy scratch and win-kompetisie aangekondig. Ilze Hattingh van Rooisand in Kathu het R5 000 as eerste prys van die winkel ontvang. Daar is meer as 10 000 kaartjies in die kompetisie versprei. Hattingh het onlangs ’n vleisbraaigedeelte by haar huis laat bou en het die meeste van haar benodigdhede by Buco Kathu gekoop. As part of the closure application an environmental risk report will be developed. Due to the prospecting methods employed, no environmental risks were identified. The public participation process will form an integral component of the closure process by providing the Interested and Affected Parties (I&APs) with the opportunity to comment on the proposed closure for PTM's prospecting right. Bakkie kry ’n baas SARA VAN SCHALKWYK is die wenner van vanjaar se Wen ’n motor-kompetisie aangebied deur ’n inkopiewinkel in Kathu. Die gelukstrekking het op 29 November te midde van groot opwinding by die Kathu Village Mall plaasgevind. Om in aanmerking te kom moes deelnemers R300 of meer in die winkel bestee en fisiek met hul inkopiestrokies op die trekkingsgeleentheid teenwoordig wees. Heelwat mense het die hitte getrotseer om te kom kyk wie die kompetisie se wenners is. KB Dipone en Lionel Links het elk ’n R5 000-geskenkbewys van die winkel gewen, terwyl Sara van Schalkwyk ’n splinternuwe Chevrolet Utility-bakkie van R136 000 gewen het.

DIE Cherubs-kleuterskool se leerlinge het ’n konsert vir hul ouers, oumas en oupas gehou. Die konsert het op 28 November in die Laerskool Kathu se skoolsaal plaasgevind. Die saal was stampvol trotse toeskouers wat die opvoering Vier Seisoene baie geniet het. Liesl Lots het die gehoor welkom geheet en die konsert met gebed geopen.

JANIE MOCKE van die Lime Acres-rolbalklub het op Maandag 24 November die goeie nuus gekry dat sy as lid van die Griekwaland-Wesse rolbalspan gekies is. Mocke speel nou al vyf jaar lank rolbal en het vanjaar ’n 14de plek JANIE MOCKE in die KalahariFoto: Verskaf streek behaal. Dit sluit kompetisies tussen mans en vroue in. Sy het vanjaar ook ’n tweede plek in die Kalahari-viere vir senior spelers behaal en in die Noord-Kaapse ope kampioenskap het sy vierde in die vroue-enkelspel geëindig. In die senior Noord-Kaapse ope kampioenskap vir vroue het haar span tweede geëindig en in die Pro-10-kampioenskap het sy en haar man ’n eerste plek behaal. Mocke was ook vanjaar deel van die Kalahari-span wat die Noord-Kaapse kampioenskap in Kimberley gewen het. Die afgelope naweek het sy en haar span ’n vierde plek in die Noord-Kaapse kampioenskap vir vroue-viere behaal. Sy is ’n lid van die Griekwaland-Wesse rolbalspan wat van 9 tot 13 Maart 2015 aan die nasionale kampioenskapsbyeenkoms in George gaan deelneem.

WERKNEMERS van die Aveng-Moolmans-maatskappy het die hitte getrotseer om mekaar in ’n vriendskaplike interdepartementele krieketwedstryd die stryd aan te sê. Dit is op 29 November op die Sivossportterrein in Kathu gehou. Hoewel daar nie ’n definitiewe wenner vir die dag was nie, het die spelers die geleentheid baie geniet.
