Polisie gee veiligheidsraad Benneli Olivier Van der Walt DIE Kathu-polisie het hard gewerk op 21 Januarie toe leerlinge teruggekeer het skool toe. Lede van die polisie het elke skool in die dorp en nabygeleë gebiede besoek om
leerlinge te herinner om veilig te wees. Hulle het onder meer pamflette oor veiligheid vir die leerlinge gegee. Die pamflette gee wenke oor hoe om veilig na die skool te stap, hoe om veilig met ’n fiets na die skool te ry en hoe om veilig by ’n busstop te wag.

‘Baklei geheim van lang huwelik’ Lizette Slabber OOM KOOS EN TANNIE SANNIE HOUGH vier môre hul 50ste huweliksherdenking en volgens oom Koos is baklei die suksesresep vir enige paartjie wat ook dié mylpaal wil bereik. “Baklei, meisiekind, baklei . . . as jy nie baklei nie, gaan julle dit nie maak nie. “Stry totdat al die probleme opgelos is en maak dan vrede,” sê oom Koos, terwyl tannie Sannie byvoeg dat dit al manier is om die sirkus aan die gang te hou. Terwyl hulle skalks vir mekaar glimlag, vertel dié twee dat die sirkus eintlik ’n groot rol in hul lewe gespeel het. Dit was juis danksy die sirkus dat die twee mekaar 50 jaar gelede beter kon leer ken. Tannie Sannie het hier in Upington grootgeword terwyl oom Koos in Namibië grootgeword het. In hul jonger dae het albei hulle egter in Keetmanshoop bevind. “Sonder dat ek dit geweet het, het sy en haar ma-hulle so twee huise van ons huis af ingetrek,” vertel oom Koos. Eendag staan oom Koos se niggie en sy broer op die stoep en gesels toe tannie Sannie en haar vriendinne daar verbystap. Oom Koos wou dadelik by sy broer weet wie dié mooie meisie is, waarop sy broer antwoord: “Dis my meisie!” Dit het oom Koos glad nie afgesit nie en hy het dadelik nadergestap
‘ As julle nie baklei nie, gaan julle dit nie maak nie. Stry tot al die pro bleme opgelos is en maak dan vrede.’ – Oom Koos Hough en homself voorgestel. “En toe vra ek haar dadelik uit. Na die sirkus toe.” Tannie Sannie lag en sê: “Ja, en dis hoekom ons huwelik vandag nog ’n sirkus is.” Tannie Sannie sê haar suksesresep vir ’n gelukkige huwelik is eerbied, respek en om altyd positief te wees. “Ek is altyd positief, seker omdat ek die middelste kind van baie kinders is.” Uit die Houghs se huwelik is vier kinders gebore. Petro, Evert, Carol en Klein Koos se geboortes word steeds deur die Houghs as hoogtepunte in hul lewe beskryf. Tannie Sannie en oom Koos het nou al tien kleinkinders en lag net toe daar oor agterkleinkinders uitgevra word. “Nee jong, ek is darem nog glads te jonk om nou al ’n oumagrootjie te wees. “Gelukkig het die getroude kleinkinders besluit om nog eers ’n bietjie te wag,” sê tannie Sannie. Sy voeg by dat sy ook baie lief is vir elkeen van haar skoonkinders.
“O jong, hulle kan my kwaad maak ook, maar dan lag ons weer en ek bly baie lief vir hulle.” Op die vraag watter raad hulle vir jong ouers het, het oom Koos geantwoord dat hy weens sy werk maar min by die huis was en tannie Sannie die meeste van die grootmaakwerk gedoen het. Tannie Sannie sê sy het haarself altyd voorgestel sy is self ’n kind en probeer dink hoe sy in daardie situasie sou optree. “Jy moet redeneer soos hy sou redeneer en dan maar net die regte opvoeding en leiding probeer gee.” Oom Koos kyk na haar met oë vol toewyding en sê: “My vrou se hande en kos staan vir niks verkeerd nie.” Oom Koos het al die jare vir die Spoorweg gewerk voordat hy in 1992 afgetree het en hulle in Lamprechtsdrift kom woon het. Toe oom Koos en tannie Sannie 40 jaar getroud was, het oom Koos vir haar ’n pragtige brief geskryf waarin hy haar vir die 40 huweliksjare bedank. “Ek het só gehuil en gehuil toe ek die brief gekry het en nou kan ek skaars glo nog tien jaar is verby,” het tannie Sannie gesê. Hulle gaan dié huweliksherdenking saam met familie en vriende vier, waarna hulle as ’n geskenk van hul kinders vir ’n naweek weggaan. En ná 50 jaar saam sê oom Koos hy sien beslis kans vir nog 50 jaar saam, waarop tannie Sannie hardop lag en antwoord: “Nee, dan is ons heeltemal te oud.”

Vingerwysing nie oplossing MET die skole wat verlede week weer begin het en die matriekuitslae van 2014 nog vars in die geheue is daar beslis uitdagings wat onderwysers en kinders in die gesig staar. Daar word elke jaar vinger gewys na die onderwysdepartement, onderwysers en hoofde wat kwansuis nie hul werk doen nie en in ’n mate is dit waar. Daar is amptenare in die departement en onderwysers en hoofde wat glad nie na wens presteer nie, maar daar is ook ’n ander kant aan die munt. Elke jaar vind die Jaarlikse Nasionale Assessering (ANA) plaas waarin kinders se taal- en wiskundevermoë landwyd getoets word. Baie skole presteer goed in hierdie assessering wat van gr. 1 tot gr. 11 geskryf word, maar daar is skole waar die uitslae elke jaar skrikwekkend laag is en duidelik wys dat kinders nie behoorlik kan lees en skryf nie. Wat doen ’n mens dan met die skole wat elke jaar swak uitslae het? Dank ’n mens eenvoudig die onderwysers af of raak ’n mens eerder van die hoof ontslae? Nie een van hierdie opsies gaan die probleem oplos nie. Baie probleme staar onderwy-
sers in die gesig. In die laerskool, en veral in die grondslagfase, werk onderwysers met kinders wat fetale alkohol-sindroom het, kinders wat weens jare lange wanvoeding nie na behore verstandelik ontwikkel het nie en kinders wat geen stimulering gehad het voor gr. O nie. In die hoërskool weer kom onderwysers te staan voor kinders wat jaar ná jaar deurgesit is sonder dat hulle werklik die werk baasgeraak het. En die grootste struikelblok is die groot klasse. Geen kind kan na behore leer as hy een van 45 kinders in ’n klas is nie. Daarby maak ouers ook nie onderwysers se taak makliker nie. Ouers kraak baie maklik ’n onderwyser voor die kind af en ondermyn so alle vorme van gesag. Daarby word dissipline nie meer by die huis ingeskerp nie, wat ook die onderwyser se taak bemoeilik. En watter ouers help nog smiddae hul kinders met huiswerk en versterk só die onderwyser se hand? Om die onderwys in Suid-Afrika reg te ruk gaan beslis ’n spanpoging verg. Onderwysers, ouers en die departement gaan moet hande vat en saamwerk en nie meer net na mekaar vinger wys nie.
Geroep om vissers van mense te wees Ds. Christo Jonck MARKUS 1:14-20 – Ek sal julle vissers van mense maak. Jesus se roeping lê beslag op ’n mens se hele lewe. Om Jesus te volg beteken alle aspekte van jou lewe moet uit jou verhouding met Jesus verstaan word. Alles in jou lewe staan in diens van Jesus se strategie om jou as ’n visser van mense te gebruik. Paulus is ’n voorbeeld hiervan. Hy het sy lewe gegee ter wille van die evangelie, want op pad na Damaskus ontmoet hy dié Jesus wat hy vervolg het. En van dié oomblik af getuig Paulus dat wat eers vir hom ’n bate was, nou waardeloos is. Hy beskou alles as waardeloos, want om in ’n verhouding met Jesus te leef oortref alles (Fil. 3:7-11). Uit hierdie geloofsverhouding was dit Paulus se lewenslange roeping om ’n visser van mense te wees. Maar dat dit hom gekos het, is nie te betwyfel nie (2 Kor. 5:11). Hy was in die tronk, is gegesel en met stokke geslaan. Nietemin was dit vir hom goed en reg, want dit het gegaan oor Jesus wat hom geroep het. Dit is ’n voorreg om saam met ander ’n volgeling van Jesus te wees.
Hoe lyk dit prakties wanneer ’n mens leef as ’n visser van mense? ’n Visser leef anders as die gemiddelde mens, soos Jesus ons leer om te doen. Vissers van mense verstaan hulself as gestuurdes van die Here – na hul gesinne, bure, gemeenskappe, die wêreld. ’n Visser van mense gebruik woorde om oor God se werk in Jesus te getuig. Dit is iemand wat getuig van die hoop in ons en ander uitnooi om Jesus na te volg. Om visser te wees veronderstel per definisie ’n bereidheid om die self te verloën, jou kruis op te neem en Jesus te volg. Vissers vind hul lewensdoel en lewensin in ’n verhouding met God, en in God se roeping vir ons lewe. Rick Warren sluit in The Purpose Driven Life hierby aan: “What on earth am I here for?” Hy antwoord dat die doel van die lewe oor God gaan. “If you want to know why you were placed on this planet, you must begin with God. You were born by his purpose and for his purpose.”

Onbeholpe en deurmekaar Ilse Watson SLEUTELS. Trappe, sigaretaanstekers. Laaiers om jou selfoon of rekenaar se battery te laai. Penne. Notaboeke. Lipstick in die handsak. ’n Beker tee (of koffie). ’n Pen. Dit klink seker nou vir jou na ’n baie deurmekaar storie en jy wonder seker: “Nou wat het al hierdie goed met mekaar te doen?” Dit is my ewige noodlot van soek na artikels en my ewige onbeholpe manier om dinge te doen. Elke dag as ek kantoor toe gaan is my skootrekenaar en my handsak netjies gepak vir die dag. Ek weet waar alles is, tot my penne en my kam vir my hare. Ek is ’n georganiseerde mens. Ek hou van orde. Maar soos die dag op kantoor verloop, so word iets uit my handsak gehaal en dan uit haastigheid sommer net weer teruggegooi. Daar is nie tyd vir orde handhaaf nie. Ek weet ek het my selfoon laaier ook in my skootrekenaar se sak gepak, maar o wee, as ek

begin soek is dit . . . wel, soek. My penne was mooi netjies in my handsak gepak. So ook my klein notaboekie. So grawe ek elke dag diep om daardie penne in my handsak te soek. Ek moet omtrent die hele sak omdolwe. Sien, daar verdwyn die netjiese, georganiseerde handsak. Dit is ’n ewige gesoek en ’n ewige irritasie in my lewe. Dan, daardie onbeholpe maniere van my. My glas water en my beker tee staan op my lessenaar. En tot my frustrasie gebeur dit soms dat ook daardie goed op my skoot beland. Of nog erger, op my kantoor se vloer. Wat beteken ek moet die mop gaan soek en skoon maak. Anders trap ek die hele dag op die taai besigheid. Sleutels verdwyn ook sommer net uit my netjiese handsak. En sowaar as wragtag, my lipstick verdwyn ook spoorloos.

Ek het ook ’n geweldige swak rekord met trappe. Ek is allergies vir die goed. Nee regtig! Ek het al ophou tel hoeveel kere ek al van trappe afgeval het. Net nou die dag gly my voet op die houttrappe in die huis en daar val ek hop-hop op my rug en beland onder Z viervoetig. Ek wil huil van die pyn. Daar is niemand by die huis om my te help nie. Ek kruip hande viervoet tot by die ketel en ek maak vir my ’n sterk koppie tee met baie suiker. Ek bewe van skok. So kry ek dit reg om na my bed terug te keer. Ek stuur ’n e-pos werk toe. “Ek kan nie kantoor toe gaan nie, ek het van die trappe afgeval.” ’n Paar dae later ontdek die dokter ek het my stuitjie gekraak. Ek kan julle nie vertel van die geweldige pyn wat ek gehad het nie. Ek sit met kussings geprop teen my rug, drink pynpille en smeer salfies aan al die wonde. Vir drie dae kan ek net uit my bed uit werk. Onbeholpe. Die ewige gesoek na artikels in my sakke. Dis nou ék daardie.

Wees só veilig op pad Willem Fritz IN Suid-Afrika sterf een mens elke uur in ’n motorongeluk en ongeveer 15 000 mense sterf elke jaar op ons paaie.
Een uit elke sewe Suid-Afrikaners wat vandag leef, was al of sal in ’n ongeluk betrokke wees wat tot beserings ly. Dié syfers is ontstellend en is ’n bewys dat ons

ander padgebruikers in ag te neem en nie aggressief te reageer op ’n ander bestuurder se gedrag nie. Wees realisties oor jou eie bestuursvermoë en neem jou eie, jou passasiers en ander padgebruikers se veiligheid in ag. Wees bewus van jou omgewing Op die pad is daar gedurig veranderende omstandighede waarop die bestuurder moet let. Wees bewus van ander padgebruikers en voetgangers en dink oor hoe hulle
dalk sal optree. Onthou om jou eie bedoelings vroegtydig aan te dui. In SuidAfrika met ons baie slaggate is dit goed om ’n oog op die toestand van die padoppervlak te hou. As jy tydens jou reis uitgeput en vaak voel, stop op ’n veilige plek langs die pad, of eerder by ’n vulstasie, om jou bene te rek en om iets te eet of te drink. ’n Vinnige blaaskans sal help om jou konsentrasievermoë te verbeter. Al bestuur jy in die dag of nag, is dit ’n goeie idee om jou reis so te beplan dat jy ongeveer elke twee uur ’n blaaskans kan vat. Hou by spoedperk Hoe vinniger jy ry, hoe gevaarliker is enige fout wat jy maak. Dit is soms moeilik om in ’n witwarm vuurwa by die spoedperk te hou, maar die spoedperk is daar vir ’n rede en as jy vinniger ry, kan dit tot ’n vertraagde reaksie in ’n noodgeval lei. Verminder ook jou spoed in slegte weersomstandighede of swaar reën. Onthou, as jy jou spoed verdubbel, moet jy jou remafstand vier keer vergroot.

Volgafstand Die meeste ongelukke van agter gebeur weens bestuurders wat nie die regte volgafstand handhaaf nie. Die bekende tweesekonde-reël word gewoonlik gebruik om die regte volgafstand te bereken. Hou die voertuig voor jou dop. Kies ’n voorwerp langs die pad soos ’n lamppaal of boom. As die voertuig verby die voorwerp ry, begin “een duisend en een, een duisend en twee” te tel. As jy verby die gekose voorwerp ry voordat jy al die woorde gesê het, beteken dit jy ry te naby aan die voertuig voor jou. Herhaal dit totdat jy die regte volgafstand handhaaf. Dié reël is net aan te beveel in ideale ry-omstandighede. In die volgende situasies moet die reel tot minstens vier sekondes vermeerder word: Slegte weersomstandighede, slegte of gladde padoppervlakke, bestuur in die nag, wanneer jy agter ’n vragmotor ry en wanneer jy ’n sleepwa of ander voorwerp sleep. Wees versigtig vir swaar voertuie Vragmotors is soms ’n groot irritasie op die pad en lei dikwels tot botsings reg van voor as ongeduldige bestuurders ’n vragmotor onverskillig verbysteek. Hier is ’n paar wenke: ) Vragmotors het groot en diep blindekolle aan weerskante en direk agter die voertuig. Vragmotorbestuurders kan niks nader as 10 m of soms selfs 50 m agter die voertuig sien nie, so dit is belangrik om genoeg ruimte tussen jou voertuig en die vragmotor te laat. ) Hoe langer die vragmotor is, hoe meer tyd gaan jy nodig hê om verby te steek. Steek net verby as jy heeltemal seker is dat daar genoeg ruimte is. ) Steek verby van waar die vragmotorbestuurder jou kan sien en nie van direk agter die vragmotor nie. Hou so ver as moontlik regs as jy verbysteek. ) Moet verkieslik nie ’n vragmotor in nat toestande verbysteek nie. Die kombinasie van sproei, lugturbulensie van die vragmotor, swakker beheer oor ’n voertuig op ’n nat pad en slegte sigbaarheid maak dit gevaarlik. As jy verbysteek, maak seker jou hoofligte en ruitveërs is aangeskakel sodat jy beter kan sien en beter gesien kan word. ) Moet nooit direk voor ’n vragmotor insny nie, ’n vragmotor het ’n veel groter afstand as ’n gewone motor nodig om tot stilstand te kom. – Bykomende inligting: Arrive Alive

DAAR was trane en darem ’n paar glimlaggies toe die nuwe gr.1-leerlinge op 21 Januarie by hul nuwe “groot skool” begin skoolgaan het. Die gr. 1-juffrouens was daar om die nuwe leerlinge te verwelkom en die ouers gerus te stel. Die Laerskool Kathu het 1 600 leerlinge wat in 2015 die skool bywoon.

Mine helps business Benneli Olivier Van der Walt
THE Tsantsabane Field Band.
Music gives skills, hope ANGLO AMERICAN’S Kumba Iron Ore, through the Tsantsabane Field Band, has brought hope and skills in music and art to the youth of Postmasburg. The Field Band Foundation is a national youth development programme that teaches life skills and promotes holistic development of marginalised youth through the medium of music, dance and life skills. The development of youth in Tsantsabane is affected by increasing social ills within the community, leaving them exposed to challenges such as gangsterism, violence and substance abuse. The Kolomela Mine, and the Tsantsabane Field Band, addresses these challenges by empowering the local

youth through life skills in the form of music. The Kolomela Mine has been supporting the field band since 2013 and through this partnership, the Tsantsabane Field Band has been sponsored with brandnew musical instruments, receiving marimbas, base drums, tri-toms, snares, cymbals and branded T-shirts. The performance of the field band has been exceptionally well. They have participated in numerous festivals regionally and nationally for the past two years. The band is also involved with other community initiatives such as HIV and Aids workshops, supporting children in distress and access to career information.
ASSMANG IRON ORE’S Khuni Mine believes in upholding its status as a responsible citizen that really invests in local community members. The mine recently presented a three-day business start-up workshop, in conjunction with Productivity SA. Attendees from Dingleton, Kuruman and Deben diligently attended their classes at the Uitkoms Community Hall in Kathu. A total of 16 students enrolled in the course. Charlene Steyn, a senior productivity advisor from Productivity SA, said that this course aimed to build local business capabilities. They do this by providing students with better skills and knowledge in order for them to have a better chance of success in the business market. Productivity SA also encourages their students to adhere to good business practice and principles. Some of the students already run their own small businesses, and use the course to better their business practice. Ulrich Louw of UL General Trading said that he is very thankful for what Khumani mine had done for the local entrepreneurs.

Changing the world one student at a time
EDUCATION is one of the key areas that the Gamagara Development Forum (GDF) focuses on and that is why it has invested R3,5 million into the bursary scheme. A Bursary Award Ceremony was held on 16 January 2015 at the SIOC-CDT Auditorium. The purpose of the event was to award 29 students from the Gamagara Local Municipality (GLM) with bursaries. The GDF established the bursary scheme to support students in the GLM jurisdiction from 2013 onwards. This Bursary Fund aims to provide undergraduate bursaries to financially disadvantaged youth who show academic potential. For the year 2014, GDF funded 24 students, and for the academic year 2015, GDF will fund a total of 49 students to study for careers of their choice. The bursary covers tuition fees, accommodation and books. It also gives monthly stipends. Marco Marks, the GDF intern in the welfare, humanitarian and healthcare unit, did an excellent job as the programme director. Tebogo Sam Bodumele, the project manager for education and skills development, welcomed all the students and

introduced the guests. He stated that education was the key to success and he encouraged the bursary students that once they had completed their studies they had to come back to the GLM to plough back the skills they had acquired. Ivan Steenkamp, senior project manager, told the students that GDF was investing in them. “They must have courage, they must know their purpose in life and let their studies encourage them to do more with their lives.” The GDF staff told the learners that if they spent most of their time not studying, they will not reap the rewards. But if they studied hard and worked hard, they would reap the positive rewards. They encouraged the students to know themselves, their strengths and weaknesses, and to capitalise on their strengths and work on their weaknesses. Steenkamp also reminded the students that they would not be doing this for anyone else, but for themselves. The GDF’s main focus is on education for young people, so they can take up leadership and change the world.

‘Brakke’ by die hoërskool ingelyf Benneli Olivier Van der Walt DIE Hoërskool Kathu se gr. 8-leerlinge het op 21 Januarie senuagtig gewag om te sien wat hul eerste week as hoërskoolleerlinge sou inhou.
Hulle is deur die 2015-leerlingraad verwelkom en die pret het dadelik begin. Die gr. 8-leerlinge het tot 23 Januarie as “brakke” bekend gestaan en het selfs ’n spesiale liedjie wat met die titel gepaardgaan.
Hulle het hul boeke in plastieksakke rondgedra en elkeen het ’n troetel-skoen gehad om deur die dae saam met hulle te sleep. Die leerlingraad het ook gehelp om ’n gevoel van eenheid tussen die nuwe leerlinge te skep.

Singing across SA in 90 days NATALIE CHAPMAN completed what was considered by many to be an impossible task: 90 performances in 90 consecutive days, in 90 different towns from January to April 2014. Covering more than 13 500 km across South Africa, and reaching thousands of individuals with her message of hope, motivation and music, it was no surprise that she was awarded a LEAD SA Hero Award for her efforts in May 2014. Chapman is a successful and well-known singer and songwriter, actress, radio DJ, lecturer, music promoter, activist, LEAD SA ambassador, booking agent and public relations officer. She is also a staunch supporter of South African talent, which she pursues through her company, The Local Element. Her blend of Country, Blues and Americana original music and dynamic performances are much sought-after by a wide and diverse fan base. Chapman has just announced her schedule for the #90Days 2015 tour. The tour will run from 28 January to 27 April. She will travel over 15 000 km across South Africa visiting 90 different towns, performing 180 gigs in 90 consecutive days. She will be performing on 5 February in Kathu at the Katexas restaurant. This feisty and passionate musician will endeavour to spread her message of hope and awareness to all corners of South Africa, plus visits to Botswana, Namibia and Lesotho. The objective of the #90Days 2015 tour is simple: to reach one person in each town, to encourage survivors of violent and sexual crimes to find healing in speaking
NATALIE CHAPMAN out, and to motivate and mobilise ordinary Africans to get involved in helping anyone who has suffered an ordeal. Apart from spreading her message at performances in community halls, live music venues and theatres, Chapman will also be performing at women’s and children’s shelters, children’s homes and schools to
motivate the youth to protect themselves, speak out when they become victims and change the future of the country by being involved in creating better communities for themselves. She will also be adding prisons to this list as she believes that the perpetrators are people who have often been victims themselves.
Chapman is a proud ambassador and board member of Epic Foundation, which was founded by Alta McMaster at the beginning of 2013. Having experienced various traumas in her own life, McMaster has a deep understanding of how lonely and helpless one can feel if nobody lends a helping hand. Through her personal

Mini-Olympics huge success CURRO Kathu held their first annual athletics day on 23 January at the Sivos Sport Grounds in Kathu. The event called the Curro Kathu Mini-Olympics. The school selected a comprehensive selection of events in which the students could compete. All the students and teachers agreed that the day could be labelled a success and that they look forward to the next Curro event.

DIE Aveng-Sishen-rugbyspan het onlangs ’n oefenwedstryd teen die Shimlas van die Universiteit van die Vrystaat (UV) se Varsitybekerspan gespeel ter voorbereiding vir die Cell C-gemeenskapsbeker. Die spanne het mekaar Saterdag op ’n snikhete dag op GWK-park in Kimberley die stryd aangesê. Die Sishen-span het veral daarop gefokus om sy spelerkombinasies en spelpatrone te oefen. Die wedstryd was vir die span ’n goeie geleentheid om sy vlak van fiksheid en taktiek teen ’n veel jonger universiteitspan te meet. Die Shimlas het die wedstryd met 90-14 gewen. “Ek is tevrede met die manne se deursettingsvermoë. Die twee drieë wat
deur Sishen gedruk is, het van goeie spel gekom waar die bal vir meer as tien fases in ons besit gebly het. Dit is nooit lekker om so ’n telling teen jou span te kry nie, maar dit was dalk ook nodig om ons te help konsentreer op ons voorbereiding,” sê Regardt Dreyer, afrigter van Sishen. Sishen se drieë is deur Kudu Pretorius en Willie Vermeulen gedruk en Tiaan le Roux het albei drieë verdoel. ) Op 7 Februarie sal die Sishen-span met die Griekwas se Vodacombekerspan in Kathu kragte meet.
