THE Kathu and Kuruman police have made several arrests during the past two weeks. Their successes reflect well on the safety of Kathu, Kuruman and the surrounding areas. ) During a stop-and-search operation held at the beginning of February, the Kathu and Kuruman K9 police units searched suspects for possible possession of drugs and stolen goods. The police also visited learners from Kathu and its neighbouring schools as well as the Kathu FET College. Five houses in Kathu were searched where the police found tik along with stolen TVs and laptops. ) The Kathu police are investigating a case of culpable homicide that occured on 2 February at approximateley 01:00 on the Kathu-Sesheng Road where an unidentified pedestrian was alledgedly struck by a blue Volkswagen Golf. Anyone with information regarding the pedestrian can contact the investigative officer, WO Johan Rossouw on 053-7239125. ) The Kathu police were regulating traffic at an accident scene on the Kathu-Sesheng Road when a white Volkswagen Golf driving from the Mapoteng direction collided with a stationary black Volkswagen Polo. The driver of the white Golf was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. ) Const. Reestang Lesetedi found three minors of Mapoteng near Kathu in possession of a stolen TV. He took them in to custody on 29 January. ) The Kathu police are investigating a house breaking case that occured on 31 January at approximately 16:45. The break-in occurred at 30 Boekenhout

Arts ploeg terug in gemeenskap Benneli Olivier Van der Walt DIT is skaars dat ’n boorling van ’n dorp terugkeer om terug te ploeg in sy gemeenskap. Maar dr. James Walker, ’n tandarts van Kathu, se suksesresep spruit juis uit die feit dat hy werklik vir sy gemeenskap omgee. “Ek het ’n passie vir Kathu. Die mense is sout van die aarde en het nog ’n regte gemeenskapsbelang in mekaar. Die Kaap is lekker, maar my roots is hier,” sê hy. Walker het van gr. 2 af by die Laerskool Kathu skoolgegaan waar hy aan landloop, tennis en skaak deelgeneem het. Daarna is hy na die Hoërskool Kathu waar hy in 2006 gematrikuleer het. “Ek dink dat albei skole, die laer- en hoërskool in Kathu, uitstekend is,” sê hy. Ná matriek het hy tandheelkunde (BChD) aan die Universiteit van Wes-Kaapland gaan studeer. Vyf jaar later het hy onder die topvyf in sy jaargroep gegradueer en ook die internasionale Golden Key-eerbewys ontvang. Ná sy studie het hy sy gemeenskapsjaar by die Lohatla-Militêre Hospitaal voltooi. Toe het hy sy eie praktyk, Dental Joy Kathu, in 2013 oopgemaak het. In dieselfde jaar behaal hy sy nagraadse diploma in implantologie ook aan die Universiteit van Wes-Kaapland. Sy ouers bly steeds in Kathu, terwyl sy jonger broer ingenieurswese aan die Universiteit van Stellenbosch (US) studeer. Walker het ’n geleentheid in die mark gesien vir ’n tandartspraktyk wat uitstekende, vriendelike diens aan die dorp se mense verskaf. Sy praktyk doen ook verskeie gespesialiseerde vel- en skoonheidsbehandelinge. “Ek hou van nuwe uitdagings, en daar was definitief ’n leemte in die mark vir die soort velbehandelings wat ons doen.” Hy het ’n rustige manier om nuwe

Teach children mutual respect WITH the recent disturbing news reports of alledged racial segregation in a private school in Roodepoort and the vicious attack on a gr. 12 learner at an agricultural school in Jan Kempdorp, one can only speculate why this still happens. Add to this the all too common instances of brutal farm attacks and the situation becomes a dangerous powder keg. After 22 years of political democracy, racism is still alive and well and rearing its ugly head in the behaviour of some of the country’s youth. So after 22 years, where are the so called “born free’s” picking up this disturbing bigotry? The answer unfortunately lies with their elders. No child is born a racist. It is a systematically learned behaviour that sprouts from their primary caregivers. These include parents, teachers and spiritual leaders. Fortunately, the majority make it a point to raise children in ways that are in line with modern thinking and shuns racism in their thinking. These children grow up without the baggage of hatred, and in ignorance of racism. But, as in any society, there are those that cling to the necessity for racism. They teach their children that it is socially accepta-

ble, even admirable to hate and judge others only on the colour of their skin. Behaviour learnt from a parent makes an impact that is never forgotten in life. Attempts to justify racism can be rooted in a number of situations. People will always find a reason for racism. These “reasons” will then get passed on to their children or students, where they will take it as truth. When these children become adults, the cycle is repeated. There is simply no escape from senseless racial violence and stereotypic discrimination unless the elders of South Africa put a stop to it. Anger and resentment towards one particular racial group cannot justify the way in which some of the country’s youth are raised. South Africa’s constitution guarantees all its citizens the right to freedom of thought and speech. What a shame it is to waste this privilege on spreading hatred towards fellow humans. Politicians, church leaders and the parents of this country need to start taking responsibility for the behaviour and reasoning of South Africa’s children. It is unacceptable for one child to victimise another purely based on the colour of his or her skin. Be part of the solution. Stop raising racist children.

Neem tyd vir jouself, wees ’n uitgeruste ma Lizette Slabber ’n VRIENDIN het Vrydag vir my gesê: “ ’n Uitgeruste ma is baie beter as ’n geïrriteerde ma.” Net ’n ma weet hoe besig ander ma’s se skedules is. Ons almal moet werksverpligtinge, die kinders se programme en natuurlik ook aandetes, middagetes en ’n hoop ander verpligtinge nakom. Selfs al is jy met ’n wonderlike man getroud wat ook sy deel doen, raak dit partykeer net te veel en is dit nodig om soms een hele dag net vir jouself te hê. ’n Ander vriendin het gesê sy voel soms so skuldig, want sy smag na ’n middag sonder haar twee-jarige kind én haar man. “As die een weg is, wens ek die ander een kan ook nie daar wees nie, want anders kan ’n mens net nie ontspan nie,” het sy gesê. Dit klink dalk geweldig selfsugtig X maar ’n dag of middag waar jy nie hoef te dink aan kos nie, nie een keer die woord “Ma” hoor nie, nie een enkele aanspraak op jou tyd het nie, is vir enige ma die perfekte geskenk. Ons as ma’s het eenvoudige behoeftes. Die luuksheid om ’n paar hoofstukke te lees sonder

enige onderbrekings of om beheer te hê oor die televisie se afstandbeheer sonder dat iemand instorm en dit gryp om “net gou ’n telling te kyk” of net vinnig te kyk of “my fliek al begin het”. Ons is mal daaroor om ons koffie van begin tot einde klaar te drink en nie aan die begin ons monde te verbrand en aan die einde yskoue koffie af te wurg nie. Dit sal hemel op aarde wees om in die middae in die huis in te stap en my man voor die stoof te kry besig om aandete te maak. Ek glo baie ma’s voel soos ek en daarom is my Valentynsdagwens vir elke ma daarbuite: Mag jou Valentynsdag-geskenk ’n dag vir jouself wees. ’n Dag waarop die man in jou lewe kos maak en die kinders besig hou sodat jy lekker op jou eie, met jou eie bak springmielies en jou eie blok sjokolade ’n tranetrekker kan kyk en niemand jou steur nie sodat jy daarna nie meer ’n moeë ma sal wees nie maar ’n lekker uitgeruste ma.

Man, vrou moet mekaar aanvul Ds. André de Villiers WAT maak die huwelik lekker? (Gen. 2:4-24) Hoe gelukkig is die gemiddelde egpaar in ons dorp en land? Die statistieke rondom huwelike vertel ’n negatiewe verhaal van egskeiding en ongelukkigheid in vele huishoudings. Hoekom sal dit so wees? Weet egpare dan nie dat die bedoeling van die huwelik is dat hulle baie gelukkig sal wees nie? Wat verstaan ons nie? Die Bybel begin met die skepping van die wêreld in Genesis 1, maar in Genesis 2 lees ons ’n tweede skeppingsverhaal, waar die fokus val op die verhoudinge waarin die mens in hierdie wêreld staan. Die belangrike klem van die verhaal is dat die mens ten diepste mens is saam met ander mense. Ons ontdek ons ware menswees deur in verhouding met ander te wees. Die Here sê in hierdie verhaal dat dit nie goed is dat die mens alleen is nie en daarom maak hy vir hom ’n helper, sy gelyke. Toe hy haar ontmoet, swaai sy gemoed en kon hy eindelik uitroep dat hy nou gelukkig is. Mense is van die begin af vir mekaar gemaak. Selfs die verskille tussen ons is beplan. God bring

nie vir die man ’n identiese tweeling om hom aan te vul nie. Hy bring iemand heel anders na hom. In hul andersheid vul hulle mekaar aan, bring elkeen iets unieks om die ander te help op plekke waar hy of sy tekortskiet. God se antwoord op die man se probleem van alleen wees, is om vir hom ’n spanmaat te gee. En soos in elke span is elke lid uiters kosbaar en moet elkeen gehelp word om sy of haar uniekheid te laat groei. Dit is juis wanneer elkeen sy of haar uniekheid beskikbaar stel dat die span op sy beste funksioneer. Spanwerk gaan oor individualiteit wat saamgevoeg word en tot ’n beter uiteinde saamwerk. Ons sukkel met andersheid. Ons weet nie altyd hoe om diversiteit te hanteer nie. Ons moet dit opnuut waardeer en moeite doen om dit selfs te vier. Wanneer ek en jy dus nie in ons verhoudings gelukkig is nie, moet ons vra of ons as span reg funksioneer. In watter mate word daar geleentheid gegee vir elke spanlid om sy of haar unieke gawes te laat

groei en beskikbaar te stel? Soms stagneer ons en help ons nie mekaar om in ons unieke menswees te groei nie. Hoe waar is dit van jou? Help jy jou man of vrou om goed te voel oor hom- of haarself? Gee jy erkenning aan hom of haar as hy of sy goeie bydraes tot die verhouding lewer? Bou jy sy of haar selfvertroue deur die ander te bedank en te waardeer wanneer dit nodig is? Die Here se bedoeling was dat, wanneer ons ná jare se getroude lewe sou terugkyk, ons moet sê dat elkeen in die verhouding beter daaraan toe is as toe ons die huwelik begin het. Man én vrou moet kan sê hulle is beter huweliksmaats omdat die ander persoon hom of haar toegelaat en aangemoedig het om sy of haar karakter en gedrag te verbeter om ’n beter spanspeler te wees. Hulle het gegroei om ál meer die beeld van Jesus te vertoon. As jy nie in jou verhouding gelukkig is nie, begin vandag deur terug te gaan na die eenvoudige redes waarom jy en jou maat in mekaar vreugde gevind het. Probeer om op eenvoudige maniere jou maat se lewe gelukkig en beter te maak. Dit is jou rol.

Lucinda Deacon TIME goes by and people change, but Duineveld High’s Gatsby Evening will always stay. Every year, the gr. 12 home language learners of Duineveld High attend a Gatsby evening in order to relive the times of their setwork book, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. This year all the learners attended and the evening was well spent with more flair than ever. Everybody dressed accordingly, enjoyed mocktails, snacks and period music and watched the latest Great Gatsby movie. While capturing the atmosphere of the 1920’s, great fun was had by all.

Wyn gewoon in klas van sy eie

KOERANTE en sosiale kletskamers soos Facebook en Twitter het die afgelope tyd driftig gepraat oor drankwetgewing, en spesifiek die planne van die regering om die wetgewing te verskerp. ’n Verbod op advertensies wat alkohol uitbeeld, word genoem, asook dat motorbestuurders geen alkohol in hul bloed mag hê nie. Daar is genoeg hieroor gedebatteer, so die Kelderkorrels-rubriek gaan nie nog ’n stem in die wildernis wees nie. Dat Orange River Cellars – soos alle wynprodusente – verantwoordelike drankgebruik voorskryf, is egter voor die hand liggend. Misbruik is ’n euwel waarmee geen handelsmerk geassosieer wil wees nie. Wat egter melding verdien, is die belang daarvan dat wyn as ’n beskaafde kultuurproduk gesien moet word – deur verbruikers, asook diegene wat daarop uit is om drakoniese stappe teen wynverbruik te neem. Daar is net so baie fasette van wyn wat uniek en eie is. Hoe meer mense dit besef, hoe meer verantwoordelik sal die genieting daarvan geskied. Die eerste wyn is meer as 8 000 jaar gelede geproduseer. Trouens, saam met brood, kaas en olyfolie kan wyn waarskynlik daarop aanspraak maak as die oudste verwerkte landbouproduk. En hoewel moderne tegnologie oor die jare heen die mensdom toegelaat het om wyn op groter skaal te produseer bly die wyn wat Orange River Cellars maak, getrou aan die resep wat die eerste wynmakers van toeka ingespan het. Met ander woorde, die vrug van die wingerd word gepers en die vrug se sap word gegis. Suiker word in alkohol omskep en in die proses word die sap deur ’n magdom magiese geure aangevul. Suiwer wyn. Wat wyn verder besonders maak, is dat dit ’n produk is wat geografie en kultuur weerspieël. Orange River Cellars maak, byvoorbeeld, wyn van die shiraz-druifsoort. Só ook word shiraz in die Rhône-vallei in Frankryk en die Barossa-vallei van Austra-

lië geproduseer. Maar danksy die wingerdstok se vermoë om sy unieke omgewing – grond en klimaat – te weerspieël, word shiraz uit hierdie verskillende wêrelddele elk met unieke geure en karaktertrekke aangevul. Watter ander dranksoort kan dit vermag? Wat ook belangrik is, is dat daar verskillende kulture is wat deur wyn saamgebring word. Die wingerdboere van Kakamas, byvoorbeeld, het waarskynlik op die oog af min in gemeen met die vignerons van die Loirevallei in Frankryk. Maar elkeen verteenwoordig ’n kultuur wat om die wingerd- en wynbedryf draai. En sit jy hierdie mense saam in een vertrek, deel hulle ’n passie en daardie passie is wingerd, grond, klimaat en wyn. Matige wynverbruik is dan ook goed vir die gesondheid. Die bestanddeel bekend as resveratrol wat in wyn aangetref word – veral rooiwyn – help om die cholesterolvlakke in bedwang te hou. (Presies wat die manne met die glasie Orange River Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon en daardie dik lamtjop op die bord wil hoor, of hoe!) Verder bevat rooiwyn oksidante wat help om die hart se bloedvate te beskerm. Wyn lei ook tot beskaafde debatte en diskoers, so miskien kan ’n mens aanneem dit help die brein ook om skerp te bly . . . Want oor watter ander dranksoort word daar meer geskryf, gepraat en gefilosofeer as wyn? As die wyngogga jou eers gebyt het, sal jy en jou vriende aande om kan gesels oor ideale dopkontak vir pinotage, die invloed van vate gemaak uit verskillende soorte eikehout en die uitwerking wat ’n koue winter op ’n wyn se oesjaar het. Nee wat, as drankproduk is wyn gewoon in ’n klas van sy eie.

Touring SA with message of hope “EVERYONE has a chance to change. It is up to you if you want to use it.” This is the message that Natalie Chapman is taking throughout South Africa on her #90Days tour. She visited Kathu on 5 February and performed at the Namakwari Lodge in front of a packed audience. Chapman combines her passion for song, dance and drama to spread a message of hope and survival to those who are currenty suffering in silence. She works in conjuction with the Epic Foundation to motivate and mobilise ordinary South Africans to get involved in helping anyone who has suffered through an ordeal. The foundation also assists victims of violent crime with trauma support and counselling.

“Violence affects us all. Nobody is an island. One violent act creates ripples that can devastate many families.” Chapman visits schools and prisons as part of her daytime performances. She says that a tour of this magnitude takes its toll on a person’s emotional wellbeing and internal time clock. “But after about a week, it becomes your lifestyle”. She and her sound enigeneer, Marinus van Heerden, have met a variety of different people during their tour. “But I love the people of Kathu. There is a real sense of community here.” Chapman says that she feels blessed that she has this opportunity to find a synergy between her music and her mission in life.

THE future is a scary place for young South Africans with the youth unemployment rate at 36,1%. To overcome these odds, young South Africans need to have a framework they can follow to achieve their goals. There are simple ways to start setting your goals and planning for the future. Writing down your long-term goal is your best first step. Visualise your goal and write it down in one sentence or paragraph. Putting pen to paper is essential when you want to refer back to it at a later stage. Your long-term goal should be realistic, but aspirational. If you are not a good soccer player, do not plan to become a professional. Your long-term goal should have a time frame to achieve in. Normally this goal is set at about five years in the future. Allow yourself to plan for milestones and objectives to

Have your written plan at hand to remind yourself of where you wanted to be at that stage. Often you will fall behind on your plan, but this is when you will need to pick up the pace and carry on.

Letting your next objective slip away will be disheartening, but believe in yourself and you will make it. Every journey starts with a single step. Taking on more than one objective at a time will become overwhelming. Tackling your objectives one at a time ensures that you accomplish them properly and effectively. Your future goal is yours. There is no need to share it with everyone, only with a select few who can help you accomplish it. Sharing your goal with multiple people will attract useless and distracting advice. You need to keep your focus on the prize. Positivity is a tool you can use to climb the ladder. Allow yourself to become the person who sees the solutions rather than the problems. Even if only half of your advice is useful, your positivity will separate you from the crowd and highlight your worth to potential employers. The first step to success is to be different from the crowd. Set yourself up, and apart, from the rest as an invaluable asset to employers and bonuses will ensue. If you take to planning your future, you are planning to succeed. Remember the only person who will pull you through to your goal is you. Your willpower is one of the strongest forces you possess, so use it. Believe in yourself. You are capable of anything once you put your mind to it. In turn, you will surprise the world around you.

ERA KURUMAN

VIER jaar nadat die eerste balke in die historiese Moffat-sendingkerk gebreek en die grasdak op plekke begin insak het, het herstelwerk verlede week daaraan begin. Drie geboue op die terrein sal in die volgende maande reggemaak word. Colin Fortune, erfenisbewaringskonsultant, sal die werk moniteer. Dié projek lê hom na aan die hart. Die bekende sendeling Robert Moffat het die kerk in 1829 begin bou en in 1838 voltooi. Ander geboue het ook later bygekom. “Die tuin rondom die geboue sal skoongemaak word en uitheemse seringbome en ander bosse sal afgekap word. Die geskiedkundige seringbome langs die leivoor wat van Die Oog in Kuruman af kom, sal behou word. Die bekende ontdekkingsreisiger David Livingstone het Mary Moffat, dogter van Robert Moffat, hier om haar hand gevra. Die eerste Bybel is hier in Tswana vertaal en gedruk (nog voordat die Bybel in Afrikaans vertaal is). Die drukker waarmee meer as 100 publikasies gedruk is, is steeds in die skoolgebou langs die kerk te vinde. Die sendingstasie het duisende Tswana-kinders leer lees en skryf en ook mense tot die Christendom bekeer. Die sendelinge en werkers het landbou gevestig en het leivore van 4 km uit klei gebou van Die Oog in Kuruman (wat 18 miljoen liter water per dag uitspoeg) af na die landerye om die sendingstasie.

Provide prepaid electricity customers with hassle free, convenient vending channels to purchase prepaid electricity tokens from. These vending channels are made up of various strategically positioned retailers – both formal and informal as well as online internet vending facilities and Banks. 2. Convert all households within the Municipal supply area, to prepaid electricity meters. 3. Periodically Audit the prepaid meter base to ensure that all meters are in working order. Should a prepaid meter be found to have been tampered with illegally, the relevant Municipal tariff will be levied against the home owner’s account. As from 1 March 2015, residents must allow the service provider to carry out the conversion of existing conventional electricity meters, to prepaid electricity meters. All Technicians will carry a Municipal-approved ID on them. COST TO THE HOME OWNER Home owners are not required to pay any additional installation fees. The tariff for prepaid electricity per kilowatt hour is identical to the existing Tariff paid on your conventional meter account. Húlle swem medaljes los SWEMMERS van die Hoërskool Upington het aan die 4+1 Interprovinsiale Gala in Potchefstroom as deel van die Noord-Kaap-swemspan deelgeneem. Marco van der Merwe het met sy swemvernuf twee goue- en twee silwer medaljes verower. Francois Botha het een goue, een silwer- en een bronsmedalje behaal.

Davy Botha het ’n brons gewen. Alicé Maritz het twee goue en drie silwermedaljes losgeswem. Lorraine Groenewald se vertoning in die swembad het haar een silwer- en twee bronsmedaljes ryker gemaak. Teliza Zaayman het een silwer- en een bronsmedalje gewen en Henru Ekkerd het ’n vierde en ’n vyfde plek behaal.

Broer, suster kook KATHU se skaaksupersterre, Jannes en Marisce Fleming, het van 3 tot 10 Januarie aan die Suid-Afrikaanse junior kampioenskap(SAJCC) skaakkompetisie deelgeneem. Die kompetisie is in Kimberley gehou. Marisce het die o.18- en Jannes die o.20-Noord-Kaapspanne verteenwoordig. Die twee spelers het goed gevaar en hoop om nog nuwe hoogtes met hul spel te bereik.

DIE o.9meisies se 80 mwedloop het net die beste uit die jong atlete gehaal.

Ry met goud weg BAREND COETZEE van die Kumbafietsry klub het onlangs aan die jaarlikse SuidAfri kaanse kampioenskap pe in Mbombela (Nel spruit) deelgeneem. Coetzee het in die TT afdeling met sy hand fiets deelgeneem. Hy het ’n bronsmedalje in die tydtoetsafdelig ver werf. Maar die ware prestasie is dat hy die jaar met die goue me dalje weggery het.

Dag was goeie maatstaf DIE Laerskool Kathu se kleure-atletiekdag was vol opwinding en goeie pogings van die atlete om hul beste dié dag te lewer. Die skool het op 6 Februarie op die Sivos-sportterrein in Kathu saamgetrek om vas te stel wie die skool se beste atlete is. Die paviljoen was stampvol ouers en toeskouers wat die hitte getrotseer het om

Goeie oefening vir Sishen DIE Sishen-rugbyspan het in sy laaste voorbereidingswedstryd vir die 2015-Gemeenskapsbeker met die Griekwa-span wat eersdaags aan die Vodacom-Beker deelneem, kragte gemeet. Die stadion was stampvol plaaslike ondersteuners by die Sivos-rugbyveld in Kathu. In ’n wedstryd wat die verdedigingsvermoë van die Sishen-span getoets het, het die spelers gewys hul skrum is iets om op trots te wees. Die ervaring van die ouer Sishen-voorry was duidelik sigbaar teen die aansienlik jonger span van Griekwas. Griekwas het wel die wedstryd met 70-21 gewen, maar dit was baie goeie voorbereiding vir die Sishen-span. Die manne pas vinniger by mekaar se spel aan wanneer die nodige veranderinge aangebring word en die gees en karakter onder die spelers is positief. Sishen se drie drieë is deur Gerhard Roux, Len le Roux en Thabang Molefe gedruk. Alle drieë is deur Tiaan le Roux verdoel. Die Sishen-manne sal in die volgende twee weke op hul verdediging konsentreer, asook die finale afronding van die span vir die Gemeenskapsbeker. Op 21 Februarie skop die Gemeenskapsbeker af en sal Sishen teen Hamiltons van Kaapstad in Kathu te staan kom. Hamiltons is die oudste rugbyklub in Suid-Afrika en het verlede jaar derde geëindig. Die wedstryd sal om 16:00 in die Sivos-stadion afskop.

DIE Sishenspan het baie goeie ondervinding in die wedstryd opge doen.

DIE Griekwas het die spel met 70 teenoor 21 punte gewen.
