Transnet signs agreement Annerie Louw TRANSNET has agreed to enter into Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) agreements of Develop Mixed-Use Housing on municipal owned land at the Gamagara Municipality, Kathu. The development will consist of mixed use, mixed income and mixed housing typologies to accommodate a wider range of the income groups. The signing of the agreement between Transnet and Gamagara took place at the municipal offices in Kathu. The mayor, Maria Diniza, said in her welcoming speech that this project will be something for the community after the unrest of the past months. “We are looking forward to work with you – let Gamagara be your second home,” were her welcoming words. Siyabonga Gama, CEO of Transnet Freight Rails, said the partnership between Transnet and Gamagara must be a winwin situation. “It is not just about land, but for the local community to be part of the railways. We want to upgrade the lines to Saldanah and Port Elizabeth via Ulco and Kimberley to have two world-class lines because of a lot of growth in the Northern Cape,” said Gama. “A lot of mining is not taking place, because there are no railroads. The minerals are thousands of kilometres from Port Elizabeth and we want to take the trucks off the road,” said Gama.

Photo: Annerie Louw He also promised that money would be set aside for young pupils in gr. 9 for bursaries to expose them to the railway. This commitment will start already in 2013. They need 400 houses of their own by 2014, because of the high rent.

The municipal manager of Gamagara, Clement Itumeleng, said they had 300 sites that were not serviced and that they had to approach private parties. “In terms of services, we are busy with the upgrading. We

need R60 million – we are short of R23 million.” He said they were dealing with the capacity. “We have a masterplan for services, it is only the funding. Bulk services will be available,” said Itumeleng.

A MAN (50) was arrested and charged with murder following the death of his lover. Lt Olebogeng Tawana from Provincial Corporate Communication said in a press release it is alleged that prior to the murder the suspect had a quarrel with his lover (37) at Bodulong village in Kuruman. The suspect then dug a shallow grave and buried the woman. The police received information from a concerned Bodulong resident with regards to a man who is busy digging a shallow grave behind his shanty. The police K9 unit and rescue team arrived at the crime scene and started to dig behind the shanty. They found the woman’s body and exhumed it. The suspect was arrested on 14 December at Sedibeng village in Kuruman. He has been charged with murder and was due to appear before court on Tuesday.

KALAHARI BULLETIN, DONDERDAG 20 DESEMBER 2012

Find the real reason for the festive season Chris van Staden READ Luke 2:1-20: Verse 11: For to you is born this day, in the city of David, a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord. 2:12 – And this shall be a sign to you; Ye shall find the baby wrapped in swaddling-clothes, lying in a manger. 2:13 – And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, 2:14 – Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace, good will towards men. The events leading up to the birth of Christ weren’t coincidental, but were put in place by God, so that the prophecies of old in Isaiah 7: 1314; Isaiah 9: 6-7 and Micah 5: 2-5 would be fulfilled. Everything that happened, from the time the census was ordered, to everyone returning to their own city to be registered and then the birth of Jesus while Joseph and Mary were in Bethlehem, was orchestrated by God. Out of Bethlehem, a small town in the City of David, came the Messiah. This event was the beginning of something so incredible. Jesus Christ left His throne in glory and took on human form just to bring us reconciliation to our Father God. He came into the world, miraculously conceived and then born as all humans are. He was first a baby, then became a toddler, then grew into a child and went through adolescence before becoming an adult.

He experienced humanity at all levels. He truly can identify with all people at all stages of life. This very first Christmas, God gave the greatest gift ever. His Son! And His Son gave the gift of His life - which was why He came. Because of this, we can have a relationship with God as His children. Through Jesus Christ, we are sons and daughters of the Most High God. So this Christmas, bear in mind the ‘True’ Christmas story, which led to the ‘True’ Easter story. Let us give thanks and praise to our heavenly Father for these events, which have changed our lives forever. No matter how ‘secular’ the world is becoming, disregarding the truth of Christmas, let us boldly proclaim the truth about the birth of Jesus as the reason for the season. For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. (John 3:16). Lord, we thank you for the events that led to our Saviour’s birth. May we remember the true Christmas story and declare it to the ends of the earth. (Pastor Chris van Staden is a preacher of the Kuruman Christian Church.)

Strydom groet vir oulaas MARINA STRYDOM, Kuruman: BINNEKORT kom haal Yahweh my na my ewige tuiste.

Kontantskenkings, meubelen kosskenkings is ontvang.

My swembroek en spaghettitoppies sal ek iewers in my klerekas moet gaan uitgrawe asook my enigste twee kortbroeke, want ek wil darem voel of ek

THE Maphalane Disabled Children’s Trust certificate ceremony was held in the Ga-Segonyana Hall in Kuruman last week. They celebrated the achievement of 212 Early Childhood Development (ECD) practitioners across the Northern Cape who successfully completed the Further Education and Training Certificate in ECD, with a strong focus on Inclusive Education. According to the Department of Health (2010) 23% of all learners entering gr. R manifest developmental delays because of poverty, poor nutrition and the impact of HIV/ Aids. This project aimed to equip pregr. R and gr. R practitioners with the prerequisite knowledge and skills to facilitate young children’s holistic development, as well as to prevent, identify and accommoda-

The final beneficiaries of the project are children with a range of special needs, including autism. A total of 85% of enrolled students successfully completed the qualification. All children will benefit from the improved capacity of practitioners to provide appropriate care and education, including those with specialized educational needs. The role-players involved in this project, the Maphalane Disabled Children’s Trust, a subsidiary of the Sishen Iron Ore Community Development Trust, funded the programme. This made it possible for 258 ECD practitioners to receive 18 months of training, accommodation during training sessions, transport, meals, as well as assessment, and certification. The Northern Cape Department of Education, served on the project management team, identified stu-

ECD teachers receive certificates te special educational needs at an early age. Despite the introduction of White Paper No. 6 on Inclusive Education (2001) very few teachers possess these skills and as a result are unable to accommodate the diverse educational needs of the learners in their classrooms. Currently one in 100 children is born with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (more commonly known as autism). This statistic illustrates an alarming increase of children diagnosed with autism in the past decades. The acting premier of the Northern Cape, Ms Grizelda Cjiekella, stated that this qualification is the only one of its kind in South Africa that was specifically developed to address and identify learners with special needs. Cjiekella went on by saying that this qualification gives

practitioners the knowledge on how to deal with children that may have barriers to learning and it also gives them the necessary tools to provide early detection, intervention and support to learners with special educational needs. The direct beneficiaries were 212 pre- gr. R and gr. R practitioners in the Northern Cape who received a recognized and accredited qualification, incorporating special needs education. The students came from Kimberley, De Aar, Jan Kempdorp, Kuruman, Springbok and Upington. Indirect beneficiaries will be approximately 35 children per year per practitioner, and each practi- tioner will be in the profession for at least five years. Indirect beneficiaries will therefore be at least 37 100 children from birth to six years of age.

dents who required training across the five districts. SANTS conceptualised and designed the accredited training programme, training material, assessment, continuous monitoring, moderation, all logistical, administrative, quality assurance and operational arrangements. The Key School for Specialised Education (autism), assessment of children, set up two resource centres in Kuruman and Kimberley, facilitated workshops on specialised education for teachers, therapist, medical practitioners and parents. The Key School also participated in the development of the training material, community radio interviews and advocacy, which produced as series of popular booklets on Special Needs in all the local languages.

As winners of the province they competed against winners of the other eight provinces at Kliprivier, Johannesburg. The awards were sponsored by Absa in association with the Departments of Basic Education, Social Development, United Nations Children’s Fund and the South African Congress and National Development Agency. There were more than 4 500 entries across the country, but only the finalists from each province participated at national level for Best Centre and Best Practitioner. A workshop was organized for the participants. Then they had been interviewed and also had to give a presentation with pictures of the school. The winners received certificates.

Recycle for wheelchairs THE Bread Tags for Wheelchairs project was launched by Gary and Jenny Gerber from Kathu. The purpose of the project was to collect used bread tags for recycling. In turn, recycling companies give a pay-out for a wheelchair when enough bread tags have been collected. About 270 kg of bread tags are needed to buy one wheelchair. Due to such a large number of bread tags needed to buy one wheelchair, Gary approached his colleagues at Kumba Information Management to help collect bread tags. During the bread tag collection process, two wheelchairs were donated to worthy causes to inspire people to bring in more bread tags. “These wheel chairs were donated to Cansa, Kathu, on 28 November 2012 to enable them to assist cancer patients that are no longer mobile,” said Gary. Gary and Jenny would wish to thank everyone who contributed to the project and they give special thanks to Kumba Information Management for supporting the project.

Sishen wins top Anglo awards TWO winning projects of Sishen Mine that received the much-coveted Anglo Applaud Awards were celebrated at the Sishen Mine with a stylish cheese and wine function at the Kalahari Country Club. At Anglo American, hard work does not go unnoticed and in 2010 the applauds were launched as the Global Employee Excellence Awards. The Anglo Applaud Awards are the highest accolade one can receive in the Anglo group, celebrating individuals and teams for their commitment to the business. It also rewards the very best examples of exceptional effort in four categories derived from the company’s core values, including safety, sustainability, partnership and innovation. Kumba was privileged this year to take home not only one, but three of the four awards. Two of them coming to Sishen, resulting in Sishen winning 50% of the awards. The honour was bestowed on Rina Botha and Werner Badenhorst who represented Sishen with their projects in Miami in September this year. The two winning projects were the Batho Pele Mobile Units in the sustainability category and CAS (collision avoidance system) in the innovation category. These projects were identified as the best of the best amongst 77 entries in the sustainability category and 195 entries in the innovation category. In his keynote address, general manager of Sishen Mine, Andrew Loots, said: “Tonight is a very special night because it is not only a wonderful first for Kumba, but more specifically for Sishen Mine. Congratulations with these remarkable achievements – you and your teams have done us proud. “Both these awards represent the core pillars of what Kumba strive towards – safety and sustainable development in partnership with our communities.”

Kgotla ya BBNB gives help A GROUP called Kgotla ya BBNB from Kathu saw the need of a family of Hume at Deurham. This group comprises 17 members from different backgrounds and societies. They reached out with gifts to try and help where they could. The family, who were asking for help for a long time, received items like beds, wardrobes, tables, food and some clothes. More than eight people were living in one room with no breadwinner to depend on. This family were so delighted by the outreach and very happy that the government improved their lives with a RDP house which they wanted for a long period. It will be officially unveiled to them by the personnel from Joe Morolong Municipality very soon.

Children spoiled at party Annerie Louw “EVERY child has a right to a bright future,” were the words of Gomotsegang Nkadimang in the poem that she presented at the Christmas party for children last Thursday in the Ga-Segonyana Hall in Kuruman. “Lobotlhokwa” which means “you are important” was the theme of the project that included children with disabilities, HIV, orphans and children that are rejected. It is part of Be Something out of Nothing initiated by Lebo Nkadimang. This was the second annual Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) Christmas party held by Nkadimang. “It was very emotional and an important event celebra-

ting achievements of the children,” said Portia Itumeleng who attended the celebration. “The party was to show them appreciation, love and care and to tell them they are important.” Sofia Mosikatsi, mayor of John Taolo Gaetsewe (JTG) District Municipality, added according to the South African constitution on children’s rights, every child has a right to be named, to live and be taken care of and every South African child should have a clinic card, a birth certificate and a safe environment. “If a child is not been taken care of, his or her parents should be arrested,” said Mosikatsi. The children enjoyed refreshments and danced to the music.

Moenie vir my kom onnosel maak nie. Wat sal Kersvader in elk geval by ’n konsert kom soek?”

PIKKEWYNE, pikkewyne, pikkewyne by dosyne. Give attention to your pets PLEASE remember your pets over this festive season. If you are going away and leaving your pets behind at home, please make sure that: . There is someone reliable to look after your pets on a daily basis, giving food, water and care. . Your property is secure and dog proof and that there is good shelter for any outside dogs (remember that thunder and fireworks are terrifying to some dogs. They need a safe place to hide). . Your dogs have collars and name tags for identification. . You inform your neighbours and ask them to keep an extra eye out for your pets. . Use a good flea and tick product before you leave to keep parasites at bay. Biliary can be fatal. Fireworks are no fun for dogs! Fireworks terrify most dogs and many run away from

the noise and end up lost. Others injure themselves in an attempt to escape or hide in terror. Apart from the fact that the use of most fireworks is illegal, it is also very unfair to animals! Please don’t use fireworks in town. Is your dog sterilized? In South Africa around 4 500 dogs are put down every day. Don’t let your female dog get pregnant. Unwanted puppies end up neglected, abused and as strays. If your dog is sterilized you prevent unwanted roaming, fighting and reproduction. Be wise and sterilize! Thank you from Kuruman/Kathu Animal Welfare to everyone who has supported us over the past year. There are so many people, too many to mention, who have helped in so many ways. Bless you all for the support and dedication. Dog by dog, day by day we are making a difference and raising animal welfare standards. Thank you to those volunteers who gave their precious time.

THE Vetus Schola team.

Children educated on safety VETUS SCHOLA PROTECTION SERVICES, in partnership with Sishen Mine, embarked on a schools programme. Three schools in the community (Sesheng Intermediate, Kathu Primary and Deben Primary) had been visited and Sishen Primary (Dingleton) received a visit a week later. The aim of the campaign was to educate youngsters about safety and specifically that Vetus Schola is in the community for the community’s protection. The opening of the show started with Tonga the dog and the learners loved him. Tonga responded to his trainer’s commands and showed the crowd a few tricks such as “dancing” and a paw shake. He also demonstrated what he would do with a criminal by chasing after a volunteer and bit him convincingly on his luckily padded arm. Next up was a demonstration of how they catch a criminal that is trying to get away in a vehicle. The team simulated a situation where Vetus Schola contained an unruly crowd that was demonstrating. The programme ended with the distribution of wristbands to all the children. On this wristband is the number of the dedicated emergency control room that children can call whenever there is trouble: 053-739-1585. Reaction vehicles will immediately be deployed to the situation.
