KALAHARI BULLETIN, DONDERDAG 1 AUGUSTUS 2013

In

KALAHARI BULLETIN, DONDERDAG 1 AUGUSTUS 2013

“Dis ’n weggeeprys. My baas vra R80, maar ek, Madêm, net R50.”

“By Spar. Totdat ons blomme opraak.”

“ ’n WEGGEE-PRYS, Meneer. ’n Belaglike prys.”

KALAHARI BULLETIN, DONDERDAG 1 AUGUSTUS 2013

Byvoorbeeld: Korrupsie is ’n universele verskynsel.

Psalm 100:1. Mense kan so negatief wees.

) Ds.

Spending of money a worry HURT MOTHER, Kuruman: I AM a confused teacher and at the same time a very angry mother. During the holidays some learners had the opportunity to attend winter camps. The purpose of these camps was to improve learner results at the end of the year. My daughter was also privileged to attend and felt that she had benefited by attending the camp. What makes me unhappy as a mother, is that she said that at the camp they had not received enough food. What confuses me as a teacher, is that we as teachers know that for camps like this the Department of Education pays R60 for breakfast, R90 for lunch and R105 for supper per learner per day. This amounts to R255 per learner per day. How then is it possible that she said all of them had gone to bed hungry every night? The only answer is that the school that did the catering tried to make too much profit. One day I had to take a book to her. I arrived when it was lunch time. That day the meal consisted of bunny chow, a little bit of salad and a drink. As a mother I thought that it was a good, balanced plate of food, but definitely not enough. In town a plate of food like that would not cost a person more than R25. The people at a take-away place is already making profit if they sell it for that amount. My concern is that the caterer or school robbed our children. I understand that the school must make a profit, but not to the extent that the children go to bed hungry. Why is the department not sending monitors around to see that the chil-

dren receive enough food every day? At our school, some teachers are assisting learners on Saturdays with extra lessons. They can claim money from the department. When our principal asked when the teachers would be paid, the answer was that the department was still auditing whether these lessons had really taken place. Another teacher who acted as an HOD for nine months, also has not received his acting allowance. When he enquired about it, the answer was that the department was still monitoring whether he had really acted, because many people claimed that they had, but had indeed not. This money is nothing compared to the expenditure of a winter camp. But whether the money is used in the correct way at camps is not monitored by the department. Another mind-boggling plan of the John Taolo Gaetsewe Education District is that from the end of August till after the final examinations in November, 600 learners will be taken to “study and examination camps”. There they will write their preparatory and final exams. Learning area managers will assist the learners with different subjects and R40 million has been approved to fund these camps. When we as teachers started to ask why this was necessary, we were told that the learners with gaps in their education as a result of last year’s service delivery strikes had to be helped. This is perhaps a valid argument, but to our surprise other schools that are just underperforming like the Rekgeratile High School has been included although they were not affected by least year’s strikes. No one can give us answers why only some underperforming schools

and not all are assisted. As teachers we have come to the conclusion that this is a plan from the district to let a few learners benefit and also to make sure that some relatives and friends can do catering and put loads of money in their pockets, while there is no money to pay some teachers who assist their learners on Saturdays. The district owes us, as teachers, answers because we are demotivated to continue with Saturday classes.

Verkeer in die oggende pla BEKOMMERDE man:

OUER,

Kuru-

Dankie.

diep geraak en soms so ongelooflik ontstel.

KALAHARI BULLETIN, DONDERDAG 1 AUGUSTUS 2013

LEA addressing the Moshaweng High assembly.

FROM the left are Thabo Mothami of loveLife with Lea and Tim Gogoll (Australian sports mentor).

Project changes lives Joanie Bergh

LEA SANDERS from Australia is part of Kalahari Experience – an organisation that has been working amongst and with the people in the Moshaweng Valley for 22 years. And today, Kalahari Experience in partnership with loveLife is changing the lives of people living in rural communities and equipping them to live better lives. For Sanders, dubbed by the villages as “Miss Lea”, this is her ninth trip to the Kalahari since 2007 and with each visit she is changing the lives of many. Where it all started Kalahari Experience started as the initiative of a small group a year of 12 students of the Frankfurt International School (FIS) in Germany who, in 1991, wanted to take an alternative end-of-year trip. Their Maths teacher, Australian-born Ambrose Kelly, had a long history of involvement in this region. He spent many years building schools here. He eventually became principal of the Bosheng Middle School and mentored many learners who today have returned to the valley in significant roles of their own. With the approval of FIS administration and parents, a team of students joined Ambrose working together to build and maintain schools and absorbing the Kalahari Experience for themselves. Now, in 2013, the programme has expanded enormously. Participants, all volunteers, include FIS, the American School of Paris (ASP) in France, Institut le Rosey in Switzerland, and several schools from Australia, including the Concordia College. These groups spread themselves along the Moshaweng Valley,

with FIS teaching in schools in Padstow and Laxey, ASP in Ganap, Le Rosey in Battlemount and the Australians in Laxey and Loopeng.

It is all about upliftment Apart from the joy the volunteers get from working in the community, the real passion, the uniting bond, is the upliftment and empowerment of learners, graduates and adults in the communities in which they work. Teachers and students now offer academic support programmes, particularly in Maths, English and Life Sciences, to learners across all grade levels. And it is this partnership with the schools that make the difference. Leah’s own role extends the learning programme beyond that of the schools. Two years ago she arranged a gathering of graduates of the Segopotso (Laxey) and Moshaweng (Loopeng) High Schools. “It was devastating to hear that 90% to 95% of them were unemployed with little hope of finding higher education, training or work opportunities. In that moment I knew Kalahari Experience had to work beyond the classrooms, but it would not be easy,” she says. The FIS has been offering scholarships to gr. 12 graduates for five years – a wonderful opportunity for some, but of course only a select few can be chosen. Going beyond learning Something else had to be considered to give them hope of a brighter future. Lea developed the Kalahari Experience Development Initiatives that were an extension of the learning that was being offered in schools. “What a joy it is to carry out

this role. I get to meet and mingle with people from all ages who live in the many villages in which we work,” she says. They are working towards creating the Moshaweng Job Support Service to offer a facilitator who will assist learners, graduates and community members to access skills training, higher learning opportunities, bursary offers, and the writing of CVs and application letters.

Active in community Kalahari Experience, under the leadership of Lea, together with Thabo Mothami of the loveLife organisation, worked together to create a community concert in 2012 which was enjoyed enormously by local and international communities. This year they brought together the bead-making groups who make the most beautiful beads for an income. Thabo engaged others from the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture to assist in delivering soccer, cricket and “ultimate frisbee” sessions to learners. All to support the idea to train a loveLife team to facilitate an ultimate frisbee competition for the Loopeng youth that will run throughout the school year. Leah recently left the Kalahari and went back to her home town in Australia. But she says she will be back next Easter. “I see my future input expanding here, such is my love of the people and their willingness to embrace my presence.” ) Keep a lookout in the Kalahari Bulletin for stories about these people whose lives were forever changed by Kalahari Experience. Ons is by die naamgee. Suurklontjies was kinderdae se lekkers.

Hulle was omtrent so groot soos ’n waterdruppel met ’n pastelgroen kleur.

DIS mos hoe ’n stuk vleis moet smaak.

Nuwe inwoner hier tuis soos vis in water Lynn-Mari Olivier ’n OUD-PIETERMARITZBURGER met water in haar bloed is nou ’n volwaardige Kurumaniet. Pieterse is aktief betrokke by haar jong swemmers se lesse.

Rig navrae aan Jenneveve Anthony (projekbestuurder) by 053-712-1862 of 079-589-7446 en Arina Beukes (mede-projekbestuurder) by 082-655-9423.

Hospital cleaned

18 JULY will remain etched in the hearts and minds of patients admitted to the Kuruman Hospital. For the first time ever, the hospital was cleaned by scores of people who volunteered their 67 minutes to the hospital. Among them were 16 lecturers of the Kuruman College and 150 students. The college was joined by Samwu, the SANDF and the Ga-Segonyana Municipality’s Cleaning Service Department. All the participants were given different tasks to complete. Some cleaned the yard while others cleaned the interior of the hospital. They picked up papers, washed the floors, windows and emptied the bins. Kuruman College lecturer Lorencia Eilerd said that the college was glad to be among those cleaning the hospital. “It is an honour for us to clean the Kuruman

Hospital, because the personnel always assist us with students that encounter health problems.” She said that on numerous occasions students who had collapsed in class had been assisted by the hospital. Susan Joubert, chief invigilator and subject head at the college, said the aim of cleaning the Kuruman Hospital was not only to honour Madiba, but also to teach the students about the importance of working in a clean environment. She added that this would help them to portray a good image to their employers once they had secured employment. Both Eilerd and Joubert agreed that the Kuruman College was happy to have spent 67 minutes on Mandela Day at the Kuruman Hospital. “It is the least that we can do for the man who spent 27 years in prison for us to live in a democratic country,” they said.

NELSON MANDELA DAY

Kgatlhane reaches out to girl (9) THE last thing one would associate a nine-year-old with, is a serious kidney condition, but this is a reality for Danielle Brink (9) from Wrenchville, Kuruman. And it is because of this that KuraraFm radio personality Tsepo Kgatlhane reached out to her on Mandela Day. Three years ago Juliet’s only daughter, Danielle, was hospitalised in the Kimberley Hospital with a serious illness known as renal syndrome – a medical condition involving the kidneys in which a patient becomes very ill due to renal failure. Danielle’s kidneys have been badly affected and she has to undergo dialysis on a regular basis until she finds a donor for a kidney transplant. Due to her illness and its serious nature, Danielle is unable to attend school full-time as she is in and out of hospital for days at a time. Furthermore, she is no stranger to the intensive care unit where her illness has seen her spend many a day. Danielle is an introvert and inadvertently shy, yet extremely smart and very kind. It is because of their circumstances – limited living space, lack of learning support material and travelling expenses between Kimberley and Kuruman – that Kgatlhane decided to help her. “It was merely to create awareness about her condition.

TSEPO KGATLHANE with little Danielle Brink.

“I also thought I could raise funds for fuel to help Juliet and Danielle to get to hospital in time, as emergency services are not always affordable,” Kgatlhane said. He asked residents to do their part this year by contributing R67 to help the mother and daughter. “I am overwhelmed with gratitude, and would like to thank everyone who contributed towards this,” said Kgatlhane. He managed to raise R4 489 in less than a day, and handed the money over to Danielle and her family on air during the show he co-presented, Kgweetsa Mokgweetsi. This also gave Danielle the opportunity to visit a radio station for the first time.

VANWEË goeie reën is die blomme vanjaar mooier.

Foto’s: Verskaf
