MacArthur Fellow Matthew Desmond’s New York Times bestselling book Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City draws on years of embedded fieldwork and painstakingly gathered data. This landmark work of scholarship and reportage takes us into the poorest neighborhoods of Milwaukee to tell the story of eight families living on the edge. Evicted transforms our understanding of poverty and economic exploitation while providing fresh ideas for solving one of twenty-firstcentury America’s most devastating problems. Its unforgettable scenes of hope and loss remind us of the centrality of home, without which nothing else is possible.

Director’s Note Colder temperatures and falling snow should not discourage you from visiting the library this winter. This is a great time of year to catch up on your reading list, discover new authors, or revisit a classic. Chances are we have what you are looking for and more. Enjoy searching our new books area or spend time browsing the stacks to make that great discovery! Or, get a head start on KPL’s 2018 Reading Together title “Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City” by Matthew Desmond. Community-wide programming and discussions are being planned for late winter, and Mr. Desmond will visit Chenery Auditorium on Friday, March 16. This book (and its subject) is an excellent choice for your book club. Library staff work hard to ensure you have convenient access to the books, audios, dvds and music you desire. Our selection is incredible, and offerings are available in digital format for those who prefer downloadable or streaming options. Visit kpl.gov to see how easy it is to download a book or stream a movie. Program offerings are abundant this winter! From Family Place-inspired Toddler Talk and Play and Learn, to a variety of Storytimes and the unique Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra-led program “King of Rag: Life and Music of Scott Joplin,” our children’s department has a very nice lineup. Teens will enjoy a variety of do-it-yourself themed activities, and of course the Hamilton Sing-Along. For adults: an array of activities for your consideration from local history to local brews. Visit KPL today! Reaching Out for Literacy I am very proud of our efforts to reach our community in unique ways, with the intended consequence to improve literacy skills and instill a love of reading. The Ready to Read Program, now in its 21st year, annually provides thousands of books to area pediatricians and early education partners for distribution to parents and caregivers of children ages 0-5, in an ongoing effort to improve kindergarten readiness for Kalamazoo area students. KPL partners with many area pediatrician offices, where during a child’s regular wellness checkup, doctors instruct parents on the value of starting the reading process early and emphasize it with the gift of a free book. This program is supported financially by our annual Great Grown-Up Spelling Bee, the Party in the Park in May, and through individual gifts and foundation grants. Even after two decades, Ready to Read is thriving and we believe, making a positive difference! The Global Reading Challenge is another longstanding outreach program where KPL teams up with Kalamazoo Public Schools to provide a friendly Battle of the Books competition between student teams across the school system. The list of books for the next Challenge is revealed in December and then teams comprised of 4th and 5th grade students at each school read and prepare for the Challenges that begin in March and conclude in April. The books chosen reflect a diversity of ideas and subjects and include a reading range suited for these young readers. The Challenge is a great way to create excitement for reading!
