Jennifer Pharr Davis, The Pursuit of Endurance Mon, August 6, 6:30 pm, CEN Jennifer Pharr Davis is a hiker, author, speaker, and National Geographic Adventurer of the Year who has covered over 14,000 miles of longdistance trails on six different continents. Jennifer has written six books, articles for the New York Times, Outside magazine, Backpacker, and Trail Runner, and has been featured in the Washington Post, the New York Times, NPR’s Talk of the Nation and the CBS Early Show. Her new book The Pursuit of Endurance has been called “ a captivating narrative guidebook that will inspire readers to test their own limits, on the trail and off” (Kirkus Reviews). Jennifer is a professional speaker who has shared her trail adventures across the United States and Europe. She is founder and owner of Blue Ridge Hiking Company, a guiding service that strives “to make the wilderness accessible and enjoyable” for hikers of all ages, genders, and ability levels. Jennifer lives in Asheville, North Carolina, with her husband Brew, their five-year-old daughter Charley, and their one-year-old son Gus. Book sale and signing will follow the presentation.

History Untold: The Famine in the Ukraine—the Ukrainian Holodomor of 1933 Fri, June 1, 5:30 pm, CEN Andrew Koehler, music director of the Kalamazoo Philharmonia, Associate Professor of Music and Chair of the Kalamazoo College Music Department will lead a discussion and lecture about the untold tragedy: the Ukrainian Holodomor of 1933, when millions of Ukrainians perished needlessly on Stalin’s orders. Andrew will share his personal and familial relationship to this tragic event, and why the Stankovych Requiem is such an important act of testament. The Kalamazoo Bach Festival Chorus and the K-Philharmonia will perform Stankovych’s Requiem for Those Who Died of Famine both in Chicago, at the invitation of the Ukrainian Genocide Famine Foundation, and in Kalamazoo, collectively the work’s U.S. premiere, memorializing the tragedy’s 85th anniversary. The challenge to patrons this summer is to “travel” to all seven continents by: 1. Reading a book with a country/ continent theme or setting, or… 2. Attending a library program that highlights a country/continent, or… 3. Visiting a community program/ business/organization that represents a country/continent Of course, any patron that actually travels to another country or continent over the summer will get credit for that!
Each continent will have a track in Beanstack for patrons to indicate how they travelled to that continent and a digital badge will be earned for each one completed.

Logging reading: There will be 60 steps on the game board with 15, 30, 45, 60 highlighted. Patrons can log their reading on the game board or on Beanstack. Book Lists: Recommended reading lists will be available for each of the seven continents and grouped by reading level. These lists will be available on Beanstack and in pdf form for easy printing. Outreach: KPL staff will be visiting local organizations with Chromebooks, Hotspot, and Stamps to update logs, hand out prize books, and conduct library programs in the community.

Once your application is accepted and you’ve attended a short orientation, you can join in as many tasks as you’d like, depending on your interest and availability. Director’s Note Summer Reading Challenge KPL’s Summer Reading Challenge is a great way to encourage summertime reading and help prevent the “summer slide,” when time away from school and regular reading activities may cause students to lose some of the reading progress they made during the year. The Challenge helps keep books in front of kids, and we know the more chances kids have to read, the better they become at it. “Around the World in 90 Days” provides children reading-based challenges to stay on top of their skills and earn rewards simply by reading 20 minutes a day for at least 15 days. Bonus prizes and extra activities make the Summer Reading Challenge even more fun. Each KPL branch has plans to make the library a welcoming environment this summer for young readers. I am pleased to introduce the OneCard program, a new partnership with Kalamazoo Public Schools beginning this fall. OneCard Student ID + Library will automatically provide every KPS student Card = a Kalamazoo Public Library card in September, and offer full access to KPL’s entire print, audio-visual, and online collection. Fines and fees will be waived one time for students who already have existing accounts and charges. The goals are to ensure easier access to a library card and to enjoy the benefits one receives from visiting libraries and reading books. In order to make the program more effective and foster an environment where use of their cards is encouraged by those around them, KPL will also offer full-access cards to all faculty and staff of Kalamazoo Public Schools. Will your busy summer schedule make it difficult to visit the library? As an alternative, consider our variety of digital content — ebooks, audios, music, and movies — we have thousands of titles for your selection. Downloadable or streaming content is perfect for summer road trips, at the beach, or in the convenience of your home — without ever leaving home!
