Director’s Note The winter season is now upon us, and that once again means a lineup of library programs and activities for all ages that will pique one’s interest and keep away any cold-weather boredom. Book Clubs for young readers such as Bookworms (Oshtemo) and Sankofa Book Club (Alma Powell) provide fun group-based reading and discussion, and there’s also the Teen Pizza and Pages at Central scheduled in late December. The 2019 Reading Together title is The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas, and the Teen Department already has their book club discussions set for that title on February 20 and March 14. Ms. Thomas’ visit to Kalamazoo and Chenery Auditorium is Wednesday, April 17—please stay tuned for all the great community programming surrounding Reading Together. For little ones, the library offers an abundance of storytimes, musical activities and play time gatherings. From 1-2-3 Play with Me and Play to Learn programs to storytimes for all pre-k ages, families and caregivers have plenty of options, times and locations. Visit one and give it a try! Or, perhaps visit the monthly First Saturday @ KPL-- a partnership with Kalamazoo Public Schools featuring fun activities, special guests and performances--and door prizes, too. KPL honors Black History Month with special programming in February, and Overdue Brew returns January 19 through February 23, celebrating Kalamazoo’s heritage in the craft-brew industry. For local history enthusiasts, Lynn Houghton presents the Golden Age of Building on February 25, where she examines the 1920s architectural boom in Kalamazoo. Also, Author Mitch Lutzke will visit on February 6 to speak on The Page Fence Giants: A History of Black Baseball’s Pioneering Champions. Your Local Law Library: Are you aware of KPL’s Law Library located on the lower level of the downtown Central location? This well-utilized resource provides an outstanding print collection featuring local, state, and federal law, case law, and access to the online database, WestLaw. Knowledgeable staff are onsite to assist in the use of print and electronic collections, and can direct patrons to legal-related community resources. Also, in coordination with the Kalamazoo County Bar Association (KCBA), the library schedules free Ask-A-Lawyer Clinics on a regular basis. New to the Law Library lineup is the addition of a monthly legal immigration service for low-income individuals, sponsored by Justice for Our Neighbors-Michigan. This clinic will also be available at the Oshtemo Branch beginning in January. In 2018, the Law Library was recognized as the winner of the KCBA’s Liberty Bell Award for outstanding service.
