alamazoo shook up the beer world by winning second place in the Beer City, USA competition in 2013. With several new breweries joining wellloved establishments like Bell’s in the last year, it is clear that Kalamazoo loves its brew. Based off of KPL’s 2013 recordbreaking circulation numbers, Kalamazoo also loves books. So we decided to combine the two with our first annual Booktoberfest! Join us for several hop-tastic events with some of your favorite breweries including: Bell’s Brewery, Arcadia Ales, Tibbs Brewing, Bilbo’s Pizza, Gonzo’s BiggDogg Brewery, and more! Learn about the history of brewing in Kalamazoo. He is also the creator of National Book Award Finalist and New York Times bestselling graphic memoir Stitches. Hallie Durand is the author of six books for children, including the Dessert First trilogy, Mitchell’s License and Mitchell Goes Bowling, and now – along with David – CATCH THAT COOKIE!, a romp of a picture book that stars preschooler Marshall, as he is transformed from a skeptic to a believer in magic, with the help of a cast of gingerbread men, new for this holiday season. Local celebrities will read from frequently challenged books. Comics and graphic novels are the focus of this year’s Banned Books Week and in honor of that focus, KPL will host local comic artists and author wife-husband team Jane Irwin and Paul Sizer who will display their work during the Read-Out. The First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution guarantees your right to decide for yourself what to read, listen to, or view. Banned Books Week, observed since 1982, reminds Americans not to take this precious right for granted.
Yann Martel – Healing Journeys: Crossing the Pacific, Dealing With Trauma Thurs, October 23, 7 pm Miller Auditorium Members of the public are invited to join Western Michigan University as it turns the spotlight on Yann Martel’s “Life of Pi,” winner of the 2002 Booker Prize and released as a film in 2012. The critically acclaimed novel is starring in the 2014-15 University Common Read. Wilson Dr. John Harvey Kellogg and the Religion of Biologic Living Thurs, October 2, 7 pm, CEN From 1876 to 1943, Dr. John Harvey Kellogg presided over the Battle Creek Sanitarium, an institution which was one of the largest and best known health and wellness facilities in the United States – ”a combination nineteenth-century European health spa and a twentiethcentury Mayo Clinic.” In his talk, Professor Brian Wilson will trace this fascinating history, emphasizing the role Dr. Kellogg’s developing religious views played in the rise and fall of the Battle Creek Sanitarium.

AUTHOR VISIT Journey of the Letters Mon, October 6, 6 pm, OSH Teresa Irish, author of A Thousand Letters Home: One WWII Soldier’s Story of War, Love and Life, presents the inspirational and life-affirming Journey of the Letters. Inspired by her father’s letters home from World War II, found after his death in 2006, Teresa takes her audience back in time to when a young man goes to war and returns home to marry his sweetheart and raise a family. It is a moving and heartfelt tribute to America’s history, freedoms and family values, and a call to citizenship in today’s world. Irish’s program reaches across generations with a little something for everyone. Her storytelling, accompanied by 1940’s photographs and music from Waltz Time and Hit Parade, has audiences laughing, crying, reminiscing and reflecting.

Wed, October 15, 7 pm, CEN Kaitlin Rose is a singer songwriter currently residing in Kalamazoo, MI. She began playing the guitar in 2001 at the ripe age of 15 on her mother’s Alvarez, which had been stowed away in the closet for years. Day after day, Kaitlin began teaching herself how to play guitar, thumbing through songbooks and listening to Neil Young and Ani DiFranco. Over the next twelve years, Kaitlin recorded 4 self-produced albums, one professional demo with Ian Gorman at La Luna Recording and Sound and has written hundreds of songs.
Goran Ivanovic Wed, September 17, 7 pm, CEN Goran Ivanovic is a native of Croatia, a Balkan country torn by the civil strife that engulfed the former Yugoslavia. The musical son of a Serbian father and a Bosnian Croat mother, he has crossed many boundaries in his life and in his music. While he was studying at the Mozarteum in Salzburg with masters such as Elliot Fisk and Joaquin Clerch, his parents were expelled from Croatia and were granted political asylum in the United States. Since his residence in this country, Goran’s broad grounding in classical music has been enriched by influences of jazz, Balkan, and world music. Goran frequently performs at major festivals and concert halls in the U.S., as well as TV and radio performances. www.goranguitar.com

An Dro Wed, November 19, 7 pm, CEN An Dro is a union of four seasoned instrumentalists who speak from the heart with uncommon synergy. Their music is a blend of traditional and original melodies from across the globe, reaching back to the past, with an eye to the present and the future. An Dro takes you on an adventure that is both personal and universal. You’ll hear traditional Irish melodies, medieval French songs, Breton dance tunes, Scandinavian refrains, Appalachian influences, Arabic rhythms, and African grooves all performed with joy and freshness. This is dance music but it’s also listening music. The band’s original works have a feel that is both ancient and modern with a dynamic range that takes you from crazy dance grooves to delicately orchestrated waltzes and airs to blazing improvisational assaults. The band takes their name An Dro from a folk dance of Brittany where the dancers link fingers as they move in a spiral line dance. 37th Annual Mary Calletto Rife Youth Literature Seminar Fri, November 14, 9 am-3:30 pm KVCC Texas Township campus 6767 W O Avenue, Kalamazoo Author and illustrator Todd Parr will be the keynote speaker for the 37th Annual Mary Calletto Rife Youth Literature Seminar. Every fall, KPL celebrates kids and reading by inviting talented people who create books for young people to Kalamazoo. This year, we’re celebrating books for very young children with our new friend, Todd Parr. Todd Parr will be visiting schools and also talk with families at a Meet the Author event at Central Library on Thursday, November 13 at 6:30 pm. This event is free and open to the public. Books for signing will be on sale courtesy of Bookbug. On Friday, November 14, 9 am-3:30 pm, Todd Parr will be the keynote speaker for the Youth Literature Seminar. This day-long program for teachers, librarians, parents and adults interested in children’s books will be held at KVCC’s Texas Township campus. Director’s Note Even though no one in my household is in school, I still think of fall as a beginning – a new school year, a return to more serious reading after a summer of lighter reading, more informational programs. It has been a good summer but I like living where there are four seasons and I’ll be ready for fall. We are pleased that so many of you included KPL in your summer activities. Participation in summer reading games was very high, with a particular surge in Teen. Programs were full and we enjoyed record-breaking days in circulation of books, movies and music! As we move into fall, here is what we are looking forward to: • Have you seen the new look of kpl.gov? Streamlined navigation will make finding what you need faster and easier. We also revamped the “kids and parents” section. More improvements will continue into the fall. • We are expanding hours in The Hub. • Look for the release of the 2015 Kalamazoo Early Learning Calendar in early December. • The layout of the first floor rotunda at Central Library will be changing for ease in browsing new books. Much of the seating will be relocated to the second floor. • Registration for 1,2,3 Play With Me: A Parent Child Workshop is now open. Space is limited so reserve your spot today! • KPL is partnering with several local breweries for a series of programs with our first annual Booktoberfest! Check out details on page 5.
