WE L C OME When we think about the south, there are a slews of images that come to mind, quickly and somewhat like a movie montage. Slightly sepia tinted, fluid imagery that brings us to another world where manners are king, and impressions are everything; a mecca of hospitality and warm smiles, like no other place on earth. Rich in history, nature, and juxtaposition, the southernmost region of the United States inspires a careful analysis of the past and how it has affected the present. We realize that in our celebration of the New South, we must never to forget just how many wounds history left on the region. From its earliest point, the American South was built on the backs of the oppressed. These people; Native Americans, African slaves, and indentured servants acted as the very literal stepping stones of the path to the American South as we know it today. And in our celebration of the New South, which is just barely recovered from the scars of yesteryear, it is only fair that we recognize the strife, turmoil, and lives it took. For, without those scars, those lives lost, that pathway paved with (good/bad) intention, the landscape and culture we come to recognize as distinctly Southern today would not exist. We owe all of the south’s personality to its past. There is a certain haze that hangs like an early morning fog, misty in the early morning. Like a mist, memories hang over small towns and large cities alike, constantly reminding residents and
visitors of what these places used to be. There is certainly heritage in the south that will never be forgotten, and will remain forever suspended just beyond recent memory, conveniently forgotten, loosely reinterpreted. In this issue, we challenged ourselves to reach out and interact with that haze a bit, examining the past for signs of how it influenced the present. What we found is that while the region is indisputably influenced by the past, this is no longer your grandmother’s south. Ideals (and ideas) have changed in recent years, and what it means to be “Southern” has transformed with the landscape of the times. In this issue, we explore what it means to be southern today, and the juxtapositions that the south lends itself to; whether that be through vegan southern cuisine, new far reaching family values, or deep love gone horribly awry. We challenged ourselves to think about the past in its relation to the now. Culture and identity in America is so rooted in regional differences, and the South is a perfect example of that, flaws and all. Irrefutably, whether through the music you listen to, the drinks you sip, the clothing you wear, or the art you make, this region has a way of seeping under your skin, influencing you beyond what the eye can see.

The Art of Relaxation Feeling a little on edge? Take a deep soothing breath and exhale the stress of life with these relaxation techniques.
The building blocks of a happy, productive life start with inner peace. As cliché as that sounds, learning the impact you have on your own wellbeing is vital to remaining healthy and calm. Having a restless, anxious mind will ultimately lead to deterioration of your health, and possibly your personal and work life. Looking after yourself, and carefully managing your mental health is a cornerstone to wellness. We are constantly told that working out relieves stress, but not everyone has the time or patience for exercise. No matter your lifestyle, intentional relaxation is needed to encourage healthy living. This type of relaxation is akin to mediation, but requires no formal training. Intentional relaxation requires one to actively focus on your body and its physical response, forcing it to relax. By taking deep breaths and listening to your body you can tell where tension builds and where kinks form. Deep breaths concentered in that area will help one actively reduce tension. If you’re an anxiety sufferer, it is recommended to engage in internal relaxation in the evening. While it gives you something to look forward to, it also gives you time to just be at peace with yourself, and reflect on your day. Breathing in holistic oils may help further the art of relaxation. Certain oils react with your brain’s chemistry causing
one to feel lighter and less consumed with the weight of the day. Run a hot bath with a couple drops of lavender oil, light a candle, and dim the lights for the ultimate at-home intentional relaxation session. While taking a relaxing bath can be extremely therapeutic to the relaxation process, the real beauty of intentional relaxation is that it can be done anywhere; on your lunch break, in class, during a bath, or even while riding the bus. When one relaxes, a feeling of lightness enters the body and floods the soul, and we start to notice the little things in life that we so often overlook. As we recharge our batteries, we become friendlier, more receptive to new ideas, and even more productive at work. No matter how busy your day is, or how anxious you may become, it is imperative to actively engage your body on a daily basis.

Max This is what young love looks like through the eyes of budding photographer Sarah Elizabeth Borst.
I am all in. This is the first time I am writing about Max. I can feel my bones vibrating against each other. I am feeling everything. Yesterday, he had said he had been thinking about adventures all day and wanted to take me to the old dairy farm. So we drove, talking about music and getting lost. When we got there we picked out spots to camp and my ankles got all cut up by the brush. They were bleeding, but whatever, I didn’t care. I was so caught up by the tingling sensations running through my body that I could have been shot in that moment and probably wouldn’t have felt it. I would rather feel absolutely everything and be alive, than live in fear and feel nothing. Even if that does mean a little blood along the way. He inspired me to touch, listen and taste. Today we went on a walk to get a snack. I got the dark chocolate antioxidant trail mix and he got two hashbrowns. Later that night, he taught me a trick for putting on my Ralph Lauren comforter cover. He thinks the retro floral print on it is cool. He told me if I was a print, I would be covered in florals.

MAKES ABOUT 2 LOAVES
LEMON LAVENDER CAKE It’s no mystery that lavender is one of the most soothing fragrances you can get your hands on, and when coupled with calming, lemon it’s simply a dream come true. Never has a pound cake been so relaxed.
1 cup unsalted butter-room temperature 2 cups sugar 3 cups flour 4 large eggs 1 cup buttermilk 1⁄2 tsp salt 1⁄2 tsp baking soda 1 Tbs lemon zest juice of 1 large lemon 1 generous tsp dried lavender buds
Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time fully incorporating addition. Stop and scrape down the sides with a spatula and resume beating until the buttercream frosting. Meanwhile...in a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, salt and combine the lemon zest, lemon juice and buttermilk together. With the mixer on low, the flour and buttermilk, beginning and ending with the flour, in 3 additions. Do not over-mix, just allow the ingredients to come together. Stir in the lavender. Pour into 2 loaf pans that have been coated in pan spray. Bake at 325 F for approximately 50 mins. Check for doneness after 40 minutes. Cake is fully baked when a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean.When cool,

south bound Over the past few years, the South has received a pretty steady influx of metropolitan expats; those looking to get away from bustling city life and make their way into an easier way of living. In 2012 six of the top ten states with the most population growth were in The South. And the biggest losers in that migration? New York (topping off the list with 3.4 million lost), California, New Jersey, and Illinois–the four states with the largest urban populations in the nation. And this migration, though it may seem sudden at first thought, actually makes perfect sense. Cities have always been bustling metropolises full of opportunity and no shortage of cultural activity. But with the rise of technology in our everyday lives, super busy over stimulating environments like those you would find in, say, New York have suddenly become even more stressful. In the same way that we sometimes need to take technology breaks–breaks that we honestly don’t take often enough–stepping away from our laptops and phones, and engaging each other in genuine connectivity, we also need to sometimes, possibly simultaneously, step away from external stresses that the city provides. For these reasons, the south appeals heavily to overstimulated, overstressed city folk. People who are looking to escape the monotony of their daily lives and make their ways to a place where things seem easier, more ideal. And although desired “decompression” may be attained by escaping and relocating to somewhere below the Mason Dixon line, however temporarily or permanently one may be doing so, there’s nothing to say that a northerner’s idea of the south isn’t completely jaded. They say that stereotypes are based off of facts, and so we can’t argue that there’s some merit in the ease and simplicity of the Southern region. But if you’re questioning whether you have an idealized or stereotypical view of the South, here are some clues that you might be visiting for the wrong reasons: If you visit hoping to connect with your inner Scarlett O’Hara. If you visit expecting to sit in a rocking chair, sipping a mint julep and gossiping. If you visit imagining that a dapper southern lady or gent , with the perfect southern drawl, is going to sweep you off your feet. And if you visit expecting as someone coming from a bustling city, that you will never be bored out of your mind on a Saturday night. Stereotypes and all, migrating down south in order to to decompress and destress has become almost common practice. The South boasts a certain sense of community, a comfort if you will. To live here is to love it… To live here is also to accept its somewhat sordid past, along with all of its former, recently, reclaimed glory. As a place formerly scorned, continuously ridiculed for being low brow, and generally considered to have stood on the “wrong” side of history more than once, the American South is slowly, under the pressure of those who understand it’s full potential transforming into a gem. Post Civil War, the region struggled to bounce back from battle scars. The abolition of slavery left fields unattended, and a large population of African American free to work, yet perpetually unemployed. The south had long been the cotton capital of the nation, and with the rise of industrialization, textile

mills sprang up like wildfire across the region. Cities began to capitalized on their proximity to water, importing and exporting goods. And yet other regions turned to industrial production; Birmingham, Alabama, for example, became the steel hub of the country. However, this industrialization surge was not a solution to the South’s problems, and racial tensions continued for decades to come. Production fell to a simmer as goods became available from foreign markets for much much cheaper, and thus the south fell from its former glory. Thanks to increased nationalism and decreased fondness of imported goods, industry and manufacturing are migrating back down south. And why not? The equation remains relatively the same as it did after the Civil War. The American South is still teeming with land, and people, that can back forward-thinking, Made in America initiatives. One-hundred seventeen million people currently reside in the Southernmost United States, making it the most populated region in the nation. That, coupled with the fact that the cost of living is significantly lower and the quality of life is significantly higher, it’s no wonder that the area be appealing to northern migrants. In Nashville, a city universally known for country music, small fashion companies are laying down stakes for long term development. Artisan denim company Imogen and Willie is bringing textiles craft back to the city with men’s and women’s denim jeans made entirely in house. Nashville itself is growing rapidly, due to its central location, established but currently growing music culture, and booming job market. New Orleans has gained major attention in its developing ten years after hurricane Katrina, remaining one of the biggest

tourist cities in the nation, is a hotbed of art and creativity; perfect for budding artistic types without the financial backing to pursue their art in more expensive locales. Additionally the American film industry, and all of its celebrity has migrated from expensive film studios in LA in favor of cheaper locations with less red tape. Locations like New Orleans, Atlanta, and Savannah attract film and TV productions like flies to honey. And still northern ex-pats come; seeking the music, food, and art–the cornerstone attractions for any popular city–which are in these cities, infused with a distinct Southern flair. Ultimately people venture to the American South to find what they’re lacking in other locations. Whether it’s inexpensive housing, a sense of community, thriving art and culture, or simply an escape from monotonous city life the south has plenty to offer expats and locals alike.

Instagram, you are bound to run into some sort of endorsement or partnership on your feed. To these family bloggers, this is a good source of income; to their fellow millennials, it’s a way to influence purchase power, and a way to sell the new millennial family ideal. And ideal which, though less restrictive in structure, still loosely follows a formula. Pretty parents who

interests just because they’re parents now, well dressed minnieme kids, and a home with an aligned aesthetic. The millennial family is hard to define. Other than being a conscious set of one or more adults and one or more children, there are few parameters we can widely use to define it. But we can say that the millennial family, in all of its glory is a uniquely beautiful “now” thing.

I’d known you for years. I think that’s important to note in this situation. It’s been about twelve, to be exact. And I was always a little bit afraid to get close to you. To ask you the questions I wanted to ask you, and to sit too close, just in case you really noticed me. Despite my hesitance, we had a few really good conversations over the years. There were heated discussions in our high school cafeteria over pizza that tasted like cardboard. And I always admired you for your sharp mind and your fingers. On lazy Friday nights in our hometown, you played the guitar and mesmerized me with your dexterity. I’ve lost you for a few times here and there; for months, sometimes years we didn’t really speak. I’d had an inkling that we were connected, or would someday be connected in some way, but I could never put my finger on it. I’d think about you every once in awhile, but I never reached out to you because I spent all that time feeling unsure. It wasn’t really on purpose. I didn’t intentionally stonewall communication, but I didn’t try to foster it either. You dated my close friend, Clara for a few years. It’s a Friday morning drive to Jekyll Island, an island right off the coast of Georgia and considered to be one of the Golden Isles. You’ve had a full workweek and are beyond in need of a weekend off. Why not spend it on a beautiful island relaxing with a glass of wine? A digital detox, if you will. Step one to a weekend of relaxation—unplug. Well, maybe keep the camera on your phone handy. Ignore the work emails, delete your apps for the weekend, and breathe in the sweet southern air. We get so caught up in our busy schedules and excessive work that we forget about what this world has to offer us. Step two in the Golden Isle Detox—horseback riding on the beach. How much more connected to nature could you get? You have the option of a sunset ride or even a moonlight ride on Driftwood Beach. Take your significant other and make it the most romantic date possible. Step three is obviously dinner on the wharf. Our recommendation? Savannah is known for its charm and history, eerie magical aura, and stunning sights. A city notorious for its squares, we thought that it was only fitting for this month’s gathering to be a picnic in the park—literally. So we set up camp, or rather a blanket and plates, in Forsyth Park to create the most magnificent picnic the city has ever seen. A small but sweet gathering resulted in a dinner that was alluringly simple and we may have indulged in a bit too much cake, spiked sweet tea, and of course bread and cheese.
