K ELSEY A MOS News Editor University of Hawai‘i at MÄ noa student Tim Perry, who ďŹ rst gained notoriety for his Hawai‘i Speedo Student blog, is currently under investigation for the theft of around 200 valuable or rare books from Hamilton Library.

He was caught when he allegedly tried to send the books to a rare book seller on the mainland, who recognized the University of Hawai‘i stamps on the books and contacted UH. “We’re very thankful to Detective [Lance] Anderson and David Niau, who is the building manager at the Waikiki Skyliner [Perry’s residence], who informed the police the books were in an elevator, and Mr. [Michael] Hollander of Hollander Rare Books for being a good citizen and asking if these had been withdrawn or if they were still our property,� said Alan Grosenheider, associate university librarian of administration.

Myles Breiner, Perry’s attorney, maintains that his client is innocent until proven guilty. “He’s been charged but not convicted ...

Contrary to what you’ve read in the media, he cooperated in returning the books,� said Breiner. He also said that the conduct of Anderson is suspect, and the actions of the resident manager have been exaggerated in their valiance.

Perry caused a stir on campus last semester when he began taking risquĂŠ photos of himself posing in a Speedo around campus. He then inspired controversy when he made a

Library reacts to theft from front page

The stolen books varied widely in subject matter, language and age. They were mainly travel and exploration literature, but also included art books (such as a fi rst-edition book of Picasso), books on Indian philosophy, and the correspondence of Napoleon. When Ka Leo interviewed Grosenheider, “The Great Sea Serpent” by A. C. Oudemans was sitting on his desk, awaiting examination by a detective who was coming in later that afternoon.

Grosenheider estimated that each of the stolen books would have a resale value of between $400 and $2,000. He added that the library also has many more valuable books that are locked away, such as the journals of Captain Cook. “We have one-of-akind things that are literally priceless, irreplaceable,” said Grosenheider.

However, the books Perry allegedly stole were all located in the open stacks. “For us it’s important to have browsable stacks. We want to keep as much in browsable stacks [as possible], because it provides better access to the user.” He explained that keeping resources open fosters serendipity – the accidental discovery of something you didn’t know you needed.

Grosenheider said that the library does not want to lock away more books because of the incident, as they are a valuable resource to the community.

But he added, “We might look at this list and maybe

some other titles and hand pick a few.”

There will also be no changes in public access to the library. “Anyone can browse the stacks and use the closed collections, and have pretty much the same privileges as the faculty and students,” said Grosenheider. He explained that this policy allows the library to function as a meeting place, where students, faculty and independent researchers can run into each other and have conversations that add to the university’s intellectual development.

But security is being addressed. “We have a very good idea how he did it, so we’re taking steps to improve the security so it won’t happen again. Obviously I can’t say how he did it,” said Grosenheider.

He added, “The fact that someone stole from a common resource is a betrayal of trust to the community. We’ll try very hard not to react to this by locking down, over-reacting.”

The repercussions for Perry are still uncertain. He has been arrested and released pending further investigation. As for his status at UH, Captain Dawson of Campus Security speculated, “if he tried to become a student again I’m sure there would be some issues. That’s just a guess, but I know the chancellor [Hinshaw] was really upset about that case.”

“It appears he lacks judgment,” said Grosenheider, of Perry’s actions at the university.

Chancellor makes final decision after stalemate JESSI SCHULTZ Associate News Editor University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa Chancellor Virginia Hinshaw has decided what the Athletic Department’s new benefits package will look like, ending a stalemate but dropping some issues that the Associated Students of the University of Hawai‘i did not expect.

According to ASUH President Anna Koethe, with negotiations at a stalemate regarding the athletic fee benefit package, former ASUH President Andrew Itsuno and the rest of the athletic fee working group had to step down as Koethe and other newly elected leaders stepped in. No new working group was formed because Chancellor Hinshaw took over at that point.

Koethe explained, “The chancellor unilaterally pushed it through.

She looked at what both parties wanted and did what she could.”

“I think a lot of the issues came because she didn’t delegate her authority,” said Itsuno, “we’d meet but there wasn’t a decision maker at the table. It was a waste of time.”

“I completely understand that the money was sitting there. The package needed to be passed through so students could access the money,” said Koethe. But she added, “I wish there had been more of an opportunity.”

“I think the strategy was to just wait us out,” said Itsuno.

“We had asked for shared usage of facilities, which we did indirectly get in the package, but that’s something I personally want to see worked on so more students have better access to it,” said Koethe.

The shared uses of athletic facilities was one problem that ASUH addressed about the chancellor’s new version.

“There are some of us that aren’t student athletes but are interested in using the facilities, like the playing field, pool, and the gym. I would want to see those facilities more open to those who want to take advantage of them.”

Another issue that was looked at heavily by the athletic fee work-

ing group is seating designated for students at Aloha Stadium, Stan Sheriff Center and Les Murakami Stadium.

“I think they [the seats] were the least expensive because if you break it down, there are sections that are promised to season ticket holders. They couldn’t afford to take that out, but they did take us out from behind the scoreboard,” said Koethe.

ASUH is still fighting to obtain better stadium seats for students.

“In the future, we can work to fight for better seats,” said Koethe.

Before stepping down, Itsuno and the rest of the athletic fee working group pushed for fi ve to eight percent of athletic fees to be given to all students, as well as a right to renegotiate if the fees were to be increased. This demand was met at eight percent in the new package.

Koethe said, “It’s defi nitely going to be eight percent, so it’s a huge chunk of money that the committee will have free reign over. It’s exciting to see what they will use that money for.”

The Athletic Department is planning to give that percent of funds back to student benefits such as reserved student seating at UH games and use of athletic facilities around campus for intramural activities.

Koethe commented on the idea, “That was athletic’s vision.

They were trying to figure out what they could give back to students.

Hopefully, they will really take account of the student’s voice.”

“I feel like it [the funds] should go back to the greater student body,” said Koethe. “I would love to see athletics open up to the greater campus community ...

They are trying to work with us as much as possible.”

The chancellor’s office has not yet been able to comment on the breakdown of negotiations. Diane Chang, Director of Communications, apologized, saying it was due to the closure of campus over the holiday weekend.

K EANE TANIMOTO Staff Writer Only in Hawai‘i will you be able to see your favorite childhood characters from classic fairy tales “Beauty and the Beast,” “The Three Little Pigs,” “The Frog Prince,” and “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” combined with local fl air in one play that both young and old audiences will enjoy.

A co-presentation of ‘Ohi‘a Productions and the University of Hawai‘i, the play “Once Upon One Noddah Time” features an ensemble cast and retells classic fairy tales, mixing them with Pidgin and local references, and setting them to music written by Roslyn Catracchia.

A majority of the characters speak Pidgin, but certain characters, such as Prince Frederick, Snow White, Cinderella, Goldilocks and Simon, speak standard English. Other characters, such as King Ichiban, speak with a Jap-

anese accent, and Fairy God Tutu speaks with a Chinese accent.

“The play uses the Pidgin to mix ... the Japanese, Chinese, Hawaiian, and other cultures together to represent Hawai‘i’s vast mixture of cultures,” said Zan Timtim, executive director and an actor in the play.

“Once Upon One Noddah Time” was written by the late Lisa Matsumoto and was originally performed by ‘Ohi‘a Productions in 1992. About 70 percent of the actors in this restaging have been in other plays for ‘Ohi‘a Productions, and several performers who starred in the original version are reprising their roles for this production, 19 years later. Dr. Tamara Montgomery was the director of the original play, but in this version she co-directs with Patrick Fujioka.

“When we decided to do it this time it seemed more fun to direct it together, because we

work really well together,” said Montgomery, who played a mongoose in the original play.

Compared to the original version of the play, this version was updated to fit a more modern setting and features pop culture references, such as the popular iPhone game application “Angry Birds,” in order to make the play more contemporary.

The play features dancing that people may recognize from television, and some of the actors try to make their own references to popular culture of which even the co-directors were unaware.

“Anybody who has lived in Hawai‘i will love the play. It is all about the culture, Pidgin language, [it] has themes that people can relate to, and has humor that will make people laugh,” Montgomery said.

“For the actors performing this play at Kennedy Theatre, it’s very special for them, because that is where a lot of their careers started.”

Native Hawaiian Student Services and the Ethnic Studies Department are joining forces to sponsor “Rise Up! Represent!,” a series of workshops and performances that will take place at UH Mānoa’s Kamakakūokalani Center for Hawaiian Studies and the Campus Center Ballroom from July 6 to July 8.

“This is the first time we are doing it,” said Illeana Ruelas, coordinator of Native Hawaiian Student Services. “This will be generated by people who are actually interested – the students – and if there is a strong student turnout, then there is obviously a need and a desire [to continue].”

Each day will have different performances and “talk story” sessions, where “someone will come to share their story ... an open dialogue about what you know,” according to Ruelas. “We are hoping to have a discussion, so that it doesn’t sound so academic,” she added.

“Rise Up! Represent!” is certainly not organized like a traditional conference. There will be a film showcase, hip-hop performances, slam poetry, music, and games in which everyone can participate.

“We want to use art. A lot of people are using their talents, and we want to promote that,” said Joel Gaspar, co-founder of Rise Up! Hawai‘i, a participating group. “It’s good to incorporate positive messages in art, because it inspires people.”

The three-day event will hold workshops by various nonprofit organizations and musicians such as Bambu, Blue Scholars and L ocal 5, focusing on how students at UH Mānoa can voice their opinions about issues within their community.

Many of these workshops will be interactive, so participation is encouraged. L eaders will be

various emcees, disc jockeys and creative activists who focus on youth empowerment, social justice and community work issues.

“Our main goal for Hawai‘i is to inspire society and youth,” Gaspar said. “If you can spark that little inspiration in someone to make a change, you know we’ve done some good.”

On July 7 and 8, there will be a Community Engagement and Student Services Fair for students looking for resources or

internship, volunteer, and work opportunities. Groups attending will include MA NA Student Hui; UHM Admissions; Hawai‘i People’s Fund; Hawai‘i Maoli; Curators of Hip Hop; Student Equity, Excellence, and Diversity; Rise Up! Hawai‘i; Native Hawaiian Student Services; and Student Life and Development.

International students are also welcome to come and share their experiences. This event is a way to get involved within the local community. Issues both lo-

cal and global will be addressed, from Hawaiian independence to environmental waste.

“There are different ways you can use your gifts and your strengths in your community to address issues,” Ruelas said.

“Think outside of your box in trying to get your message across.”

Ruelas said she expects students to benefit from these events through joining interconnected circles.

“The most important thing about this event is connecting with people who share similar pas-

sions, ... common ground, and the same community,” she said.

For newcomers looking to make a difference, Ruelas said she believes “hearing success stories, stories of perseverance and endurance, will be encouraging.” Even those without any current interest may walk away with a seed planted in them to become actively connected.

The sessions are free, but spots must be reserved via the Native Hawaiian Student Services Facebook page.

A Dell notebook computer regularly priced at $730 sells for $48.01. A Kindle 3 with Wi-Fi, normally a $140 purchase, sells for $10.91. A PlayStation 3 bundle priced at $400 is bought for only $5.74. No, this is not the black market selling stolen goods – these are brand new products sold and shipped to your home through the website BigDeal.com.

How are BigDeal and retailers giving such staggering discounts while remaining profitable? It’s the same way casinos are able to provide eye-popping jackpots without going out of business. The name of the game is numbers, and BigDeal knows how to keep them in its favor. BigDeal may appear similar at fi rst to other online auction websites, but for one important difference: unlike eBay or other auction sites, placing a bid on BigDeal is not free. On BigDeal, users must purchase bids for 75 cents apiece.

To average consumers this may seem negligible in comparison to the substantial discount they hope to receive when bidding on a product.

But for BigDeal, this translates into substantial profits. Each bid raises the price of the item by a single penny, and adds 30 additional seconds to the auction clock. Other bidders then have the short opportunity to cast additional bids. This system means that if the price of an auction item is raised only $1, BigDeal receives $75 in bids.

Unlike other online auctions, being outbid means BigDeal users must bid again or lose all of the money spent previously placing bids. In every auction, there is only one winner; the discounted price for the item (and the profit for BigDeal) comes from the net loss of the several other bidders. High-end items up for auction, such as laptop computers and Kindles, often generate hundreds of bids, as is shown by the statistics BigDeal provides for each auction.

Luckily for bidders, BigDeal does offer a “Buy it Now” feature, which subtracts the cost of your used bids from the normal retail price of an item. This is useful for those who really want an item and are willing to pay full retail value, but want to try their

luck for a potential discount.

The lucky winners of BigDeal auctions can walk away with items discounted 98 percent off retail value, as is shown by the numerous advertisements highlighting the website. What isn’t strewn across the homepage of BigDeal, however, is the money lost by bidders who failed to place the last bid after sinking numerous bids (and a substantial investment) into an auction.

It’s important that users do a bit of research before bidding on the website. BigDeal provides various statistics on previous auctions that include the total time of an auction, the total number of bids, the winning price, and the percent off retail value.

Using these tools, and being fully aware of how the bidding system works, bidders are more likely to snag the item they really want while using the fewest number of costly bids.

M ARC A R AK AKI Sports Editor Six former Warriors will get another opportunity to represent the University of Hawai‘i.

Tuika Tufaga (2008-09), Spencer Smith (2006 -10), Nate Ilaoa (2001-06), Bronson Tiwanak (2009-10), and Tala Esera (200206) will headline the Hawai‘i team as they battle a team made up of former UNLV players as part of the New Era Bowl in Osaka, Japan. The Sunday, July 10 game will be played in the 40,000+ seat Kyocera Dome Osaka.

Current associate head coach Rich Miano will be Hawai‘i’s head coach and defensive coordinator, while graduate assistant Inoke Funaki will lead the offense.

“We’re extremely excited to be a part of this event,” Miano said. “It’s a perfect opportunity to go out there and compete and show what Hawai‘i football is all about. When we have the opportunity to blitz and when we have the opportunity to do some [new] things, we are going to do that.

And I know Inoke [Funaki] on offense is going to do some similar things – but at the same time we want to win this game.”

This game started in 1990 as the Hesei Bowl, and will feature Japan collegiate all-stars playing with A merican former collegiate players. The Japanese players will adapt to the A merican colleges’ offense and defense. Hawai‘i played in this event in 2004 and 2005.

“There’s a lot of desire up there [in Japan] to learn – the players are very disciplined, very intelligent,” Funaki said. “I’m just really excited to be able to [go] and teach what we do here at the University of Hawai‘i to them, and hopefully build on whatever they already have.”

LEARNING A FOREIGN L A N G UAG E Both Funaki and Miano will most likely need a translator to communicate with the Japanese players.

“I have no Japanese to even brush up on,” Funaki jokingly said. “[I just know] some basics

like ‘hi’ and ‘bye.’”

“I was actually our interpreter when I went with the Eagles and went with the Jets,” Miano said. “But I know a [little]. I’m trying to brush up on it as well.

And we’re very fortunate to bring our wives as well and our families, and my wife knows a little Japanese. But it’s going to be very educational for us.”

REACHING OUT ACROSS THE POND

The New Era Bowl is just one way the Hawai‘i Athletic Department is working to extend its relationships out of the country.

“When Coach Mack [head coach Greg McMackin] and I went [to Japan] about three years ago, we knew a lot of schools that went into Japan, but since they were almost like one-hit wonders, we said we were committed,” athletics director Jim Donovan said. “Since that time our golf team has played over there, our basketball team is going to play in Osaka in August, and we are committed to building relationships with Japan sports.”
