CAITLIN K ELLY Associate News Editor University of Hawai‘i System President M.R.C. Greenwood has made it clear that she is ready to move on from the Stevie Wonder fiasco.

After it was announced that she would be retained as president, Greenwood began a series of campus-wide forums; she took suggestions from faculty, staff, students and community members in a meeting at UH Mānoa on Dec. 2. This forum is a part of a series that Greenwood will attend at all ten UH campuses.

“We’ve had our stumble, as Sen. Tokuda called it. Let’s celebrate our successes and find better ways of communicating those because they are terrific,” Greenwood explained. “I’ve watched the university over the past three years rise in rankings, and faculty members are really coming together.”

The Art Auditorium was about one-third full with faculty, staff and community members.

Students only made up a handful of the crowd, with a majority of them pursuing graduate studies.

“I’m interested in people’s opinions. I realize that the forums never meet everybody’s desires but

I’m glad that there were students here,” Greenwood expressed.

Greenwood was accompanied by UH Mānoa Chancellor Tom Apple, Executive Vice President for Academic A ffairs Linda Johnsrud, Board of Regents Chair Eric Martinson, Vice Chair James Lee and Regents Chuck Gee, John Holzman, and Coralie Chun Matayoshi. Notes will be taken at all meetings, and they will be summarized and reported back to the Regents.

DIVERSITY Building relationships with international universities was one of the topics addressed during the meeting. Holzman, a retired diplomat with experience in the Asia-Pacific and the Middle East, explained that the number of international students is one way to measure involvement while the number of partnerships is another.

“I don’t think the results so far are as good as they should have been, and I would like to see a greater focus on that,” Holzman said.

The speakers acknowledged the importance of international relations in the prestige of a university. “If you wanted to say that you graduated from a great university,

that university will be international in nature,â€? said Gee. However, Apple cited his experience at the University of Delaware as an example of why UH MÄ noa should take care to ensure that international applicants are qualiďŹ ed to study in the United States. “We increased our international student body [at the University of Delaware] by 350 percent in three years. But we suffered some setbacks in that process,â€?

Apple explained, referring to the in ux of Chinese students who were not proďŹ cient in English.

TUITION Administrators also addressed concerns about rising tuition. Apple explained that more ďŹ nancial aid is being given out, increasing by about one percent per year.

Greenwood noted that compensating faculty cannot be done solely by general funds since this relies mostly on outside sources like tuition. “That’s not a pretty picture, but it is, however, comparatively a very good bargain, especially because we’re increasing ďŹ nancial aid,â€? she said.

It at least has the advantage of letting students and their families know what the tuition is going to be.�

R E P U TAT I O N Martinson addressed the issue of transparency in the meetings, emphasizing that written and oral testimony up to three minutes long is always taken and shared with members.

Gee also acknowledged the importance of public testimony in the context of the Pacific Biosciences Research Center’s Kewalo Marine Laboratory, which was in danger of being closed until last month. “ The Regents had two committee meetings, including two board meetings before this issue was decided and it was a very difficult one. But I would honestly say that had it not been for the public testimony, that program probably would not exist today.�

The Regents also spoke about fixing their reputation in the wake of the failed Stevie Wonder concert.

Greenwood’s contract ends in 2015.

“Frankly, we’ve got to get back to work. We’ve got to get back to making our university great,�

Martinson explained. “The best promoter of our institution is success and achievement.

We have a lot ahead of us and we need to get back to work.�

R E AC T I O N S Roxanne Yee, a recent graduate of UH MÄ noa, suggested that an online forum be held to discuss the same issues that were raised at the meeting. She speculated that more students couldn’t be present at the meeting because it was held in the late afternoon a week before ďŹ nals.

However, Johnsrud insisted that involved parties tried to schedule the meetings to cater to as many people as possible. “We tried to put them all at about 4:00 -5:30 with the hopes that we could attract some community. We’ve got so many different stakeholders that we were really trying to bring out,� Johnsrud explained.

Greenwood has three more forums left in the series, with the next one being on Dec. 5 at Windward Community College. Apple’s next campus-wide conversation will be in January with a focus on campus security.

‘Create a unified system’ for transfer credits A LEX BITTER Senior Staff Writer A survey being conducted by the University of Hawai‘i Student Caucus is attempting to gather feedback from students about their experiences with current policies for transferring credits between campuses of the UH system.

The questionnaire, which was sent out to all UH students on Nov. 19, is part of a larger initiative by the Caucus to streamline the current articulation agreements, which vary across the 10 UH campuses.

“Our goal is to create a unified system of articulation and transfer credits within the UH system, which will assist students in tailoring their education to

specific needs and interests,” the Caucus said in its e-mail asking students to participate in the survey.

Establishing one set of guidelines to determine how credits may be transferred between campuses, especially between the community colleges and the three university campuses, has been a goal for some UHSC members for years.

Michael Sado, a senior sociology major and delegate to the Caucus from UH Hilo, has been interested in the subject since he transferred to the Hilo campus from Hawai‘i Community College a year and a half ago.

Sado, who was among the first class of community college students to transfer after studying for two years at HCC,

said that approximately one quarter of the 4,000 students who have responded to the survey so far indicated that they have had some issue transferring credits between campuses in the UH system.

He added that, while the push for a system-wide articulation policy has been discussed for years, UHSC’s survey is providing hard data that recognizes problems with the current system and strengthens the case for a unified set of guidelines.

“All general education requirements should be the same across the system,” Sado said, noting that these credits, required for all UH students,

account for most of the credits transferred between campuses.

Although a unified agreement would have benefits for prospective university students who start out at community colleges, Sado maintained that making it easier to transfer credits within the system would also give an advantage to current students at UH Mānoa, Hilo and West O‘ahu.

In an era of budget cuts, he argued, students don’t always have access to the courses that they need in order to graduate on time. Having a singular articulation agreement for all campuses would allow students to take the required course at a nearby campus or through the distance learning program at one off-island.

Sado said that, he believes many students are concerned by credit transfer issues and that students need to “learn to stand up for themselves” and their education with this issue.

“It makes students think about how they form their schedule … [It makes them realize] that all the edu-

cation that they have earned counts for something,” he said.

Current articulation policy, last amended in 2006, claims that the present guidelines “assist in the smooth progression of students toward degree programs in an environment of evolving curriculum requirements.” At the same time, though, the policy cautions students to plan carefully and consult with faculty when choosing courses that they plan to transfer to another campus later.

UHSC’s survey will run until Dec. 6. After the survey period ends, the Caucus will release the official results and plan an appropriate course of action, which Sado said will likely consist of lobbying UH system administrators as well as the Board of Regents.

For his part, Sado is optimistic about the prospects for a unified transfer agreement and acknowledged that the Caucus’s efforts are the first step in a long process.

“This is just the beginning,” he said.

How to write an A+ paper PAIGE TAKEYA Chief Copy Editor

As you descend into these last, caffeine-fueled days of the semester, don’t let your term papers overwhelm you. Follow these strategies to make sure that you keep your sanity while still producing quality work.

T H E S I S F O U N DAT I O N S

A thesis is the most important part of any paper, serving as a snapshot summary of the entire essay.

Keep it concise: Don’t let it become more than two sentences long. Try to keep quotes within the thesis to a minimum; ideally, it is an expression of your own thoughts, not the words of others.

This formula can serve as a template for your thesis efforts: I believe BLANK is BLANK because BLANK, BLANK and BLANK. A less abstract example would look like this: I believe Iron Man is the strongest Avenger because of his sophisticated weaponry, intelligence and

leadership capacity.

Think of it like a construction project: Establishing the fundamental premise (“I believe Iron Man is the strongest Avenger”) lays the concrete, or foundation, of the argumentative essay.

Once you have this overall premise settled, you then need to start building the frame of the house.

Three supporting arguments (“because of his sophisticated weaponry, his intelligence and his leadership capacity”) provide a skeleton around which to build a basic five-paragraph essay, but if you’re confident about your ability to organize, having fewer or more paragraphs is also fine.

If there’s no frame, you won’t be able to build the rest of the house; if you don’t have a good thesis, then there’s no way you’ll be able to fi nish the essay.

Q U O T E S A N DW I C H E S Correct citation of sources is important – but knowing how to integrate quotes and research into an essay is even more crucial.

Don’t throw in quotes haphazardly. A good research paper recognizes that outside sources need to be placed in context and analyzed before they become effective.

Think of these two aims as a sandwich. Your research is the ingredients of the sandwich – lettuce and tomatoes, for instance – that must be placed between the two slices.

Try to structure your quote sandwiches like this: Maria Hill, deputy director of S.H.I.E.L.D., commented in her report “Breaking Down the Avengers Initiative” that “While the Avengers all have different strengths, it is Iron Man alone that is capable of switching between support and leadership at a moment’s notice” (82). Indeed, Iron Man proves his adaptability when he swaps between rallying the bruised egos of the Avengers in the aftermath of the helicarrier attack to taking orders without real protest from Captain America during the New York battle.

vides credibility to your source and indicates where you found your information. The second slice of bread justifies why it supports your theories. Your analysis should also strive to be longer than the quote itself: The ideal paragraph should be two-thirds your ideas, one-third your research.

Without the context and analysis bread, you don’t have a sandwich – you just have a salad.

P L A N N I N G T H E P RO C E S S Adjust your mindset: Writing is more than the end product – it is a process.

Instead of trying to scour Academic Search Premier for new articles, scan a library book, do a preliminary grammar check and churn out a conclusion all at once, approach the essay in stages.

Even if you’re pressed for time, set aside at least a few hours for research. Read through all your materials and highlight what could be useful. Trying to integrate sources as you read

them may seem efficient, but if you find something that contradicts your argument later, it will be harder to incorporate it into your piece without rewriting.

A fter you crank out an initial draft, take a break. Relaxing and getting away from the assignment helps refresh your mind and lets you return with a new perspective. Fatigue from looking at the same words over and over will hinder your ability to notice typos and other errors.

A few days are ideal, but even under pressure a few hours will be beneficial.

The addition of apple cider and spices give a mild gingerbread f lavor without overwhelming taste buds. Unlike regular fried donut holes, these are baked in the oven as a healthier alternative. Sugar, butter and milk were also cut back to make this recipe an even better way to enjoy holiday f lavors guilt-free.

INGREDIENTS: Yields 20 donut holes h Donutt 1 cup wholewheatt oat flour ¼ cup brown sugar ¾ cup apple cid cider er 2 Tbsp p unsweetened unsweete ened soy milk ilk 1 Tbsp p melted butter b ½ tsp cinnamon ½ tsp nutmeg ¼ tsp allspice ¼ tsp salt 1 tsp baking powder er 1 tsp baking g soda 1 egg Glaze 1 cup powdered ered sugarr 2 Tbsp p apple cider

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

2. In a small saucepan over medium heat, boil apple cider for approximately 10-15 minutes until it reduces to two tablespoons. Set aside.

3. In a medium bowl, combine flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, salt, baking powder and baking soda. Stir in reduced apple cider.

4. In a small bowl, whisk together butter, egg and soy milk. Slowly mix into dry ingredients. The batter will be thick but not runny.

5. In a lightly buttered mini muffin pan or mini donut pan, pour batter into each cup until halfway full.

5. Bake for 5-7 minutes. Remove from oven and cool for 10 minutes.

6. Mix powdered sugar and apple cider for glaze. Drizzle on top or dip donut holes into glaze. Top with sprinkles for an extra sweet addition.

Moloka‘i, the Friendly Isle, has been the center of genetically modified food research for the past 144 years. Monsanto, the leading company for biotechnology gy worldwide, is the largest employer on the island. The Hawai‘i Crop Improvement Association, on, a nonprofit group supported by the Hawai‘i ai‘i seed industry, has endorsed this bill. The issue ue lies between the views of those who agree and d disagree with the advantages and disadvan-tages of genetically modified organism crops.

The supporters of this industry believe that it is a well-regulated project and that it also offers positive benefits to both farmers and consumers through the breakthroughs of science and technology. Those who oppose this industry believe that GMO foods have not been properly tested (or have even been tested at all) and that if they’re consumed, they may cause serious health problems.

In Hawai‘i, a disease called “ring spot”” can be found in papayas, and GMO foodss can eliminate this. Also, nutritional benefitss can be found for children in developing counntries within products such as “Golden Rice,” e,” which can alleviate vitamin-A deficiencies.. A study performed by Jan Suszkiw in “Transgenic enic Research” showed that if the Bt (Bacillus thuringiringiensis) toxin were injected into corn and cotton crops, then it could improve the health of humans and animals because of the reduced risk off the food being contaminated by mycotoxins, which are “toxic chemicals produced by fungi.”

Even though these benefits sound promising, romising, the risks may turn out to be more severe. As I have stated before, thorough human tests of consuming g GMO foods over a long period of time have not been done. one. We have only animal testing to observe and the data a shows that harmful side effects are quite possible. Jeffrey Smith, the author of “Seeds of Deception,” has done extensive research on Bt corn and what it can do to our bodies. He stated that, “If … [genetically engineered] corn were to transfer to the bacteria inside our gut, it might transform it into living pesticide factories, possibly for the rest of our lives.” Industry-sponsored testing states that GMO foods have a clean record when it comes to adverse effects on human health, but many sources have stated that “longterm effects are theoretically possible.” Smith clearly is against GMO foods when he says, “We’re all being used as guinea pigs in an uncontrolled experiment.”

Many on Moloka‘i have been fighting against the production of bioengineered foods for a decade now and it is taking over the island. The Moloka‘i Ranch, who which owns much of the island, leases land to Monsanto for pennies and provides them with water at highly reduced rates.

Monsanto and Mycogen corporate funding have continually prevented the labeling of GMO products in both Hawai‘i and the mainland, and up to 70 percent of the food on our groceries’ shelves are GMO products. The people of America are unknowing guinea pigs in the quest for corporate profit.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR How safe is it to drink O‘ahu’s ground water?

Does it have any contaminates? What is being done to protect it? I’ve done some research regarding the drinking water on O‘ahu because I’ve always heard that we have some of the safest, cleanest and best-tasting water in the country, so I wanted to see if there was any truth to that. However, my findings did not confirm the rumors. As it turns out, the water on O‘ahu is not as safe as we are lead to believe. The Board of Water Supply published the Central O‘ahu Watershed Study, which can be read at: boardofwatersupply.com/files/Central_O‘ahu _Watershed_Study.pdf The report done by the Board of Water Supply confirms pollutants in the ground water by stating “vulnerability of ground water to contamination has been confirmed by the widespread detection of pollutants in potable aquifers.” There is an abundance of ways that the ground water is being contaminated: Inactive landfills, dumping of urban trash, broken or leaky sewer lines, solvent spills, pesticides, etc. The report goes on to state that solvents have been detected beneath sites such as Kunia Village and the Pearl Harbor Naval Complex.

Unsafe drinking water is unacceptable.

“In 2007, O‘ahu ranked first in the nation in the percentage of wells in which fumigants were detected,” the report reads. It is good to be ranked first in the nation but not for this reason. I’ve lived on O‘ahu for over four years now, and I have yet to see a report in the news about our drinking water. I’m not sure why the media doesn’t cover this. I’m also not sure why O‘ahu residents believe their water is so safe. This report should be read by everyone before they decide to consume O‘ahu ground water.

Granted, most of the contaminants are from pesticides on former plantations and not much can be done about that. However, better filtration techniques should be implemented to keep these harmful chemicals out of our water. Efforts are being made by a number of conservation programs to reduce chemicals leaking into the ground water: The Mānana Valley Watershed Protection and Habitat Restoration Project and the Na Kupuna a me Na Kako‘o O Halawa, to name a few. It’s comforting to know that some organizations are looking into the situation, but I believe a better job of raising awareness should be done as well.

Home for the holidays VERONICA FREEMAN Contributing Writer As the holiday season rolls around, students begin packing up their bags to return home. Being home for the winter season is great, but the traveling is miserable. Long lines, metal detectors, crammed terminals and stuffy, prolonged fl ights can put a damper on the commute. We must not forget that airport security is intended to ensure the safety of its fl iers, no matter how annoying and strict these regulations are.

H OW T O PAC K Following the World Trade Center attacks in September 2001 and a liquid bomb scare in London in 2006, airport security around the world has become strict to avoid future attacks. But many Americans have disapproved of security screenings and faced the procedures with resistance.

In 2010, John Tyner became an Internet star after sparking a confrontation with the Transportation Security Administration: He was removed from a Chicago airport after telling security, “If

you touch my junk, I’ll have you arrested.” Tyner was objecting to a physical pat down administered

by TSA officers, which includes a physical search of traveler’s groin, breasts and buttocks areas.

Passengers’ personal items are also subject to security screenings.

Laptops and other electronic devices must be taken out of bags at security checkpoints. Gifts should not be wrapped when traveling as security may unwrap suspicious items even if they are packed in your luggage.

The TSA has also limited what kinds of items travelers may possess on planes. No liquids over 3.4 ounces are allowed in a carry-on bag, and all liquid-containers items must fit in a quart-sized zip-closure bag. If a container is marked as 3.6 ounces and half of the liquid is missing, it will still be removed from the traveler’s carry-on. All knives, scissors and razor blades are forbidden, but may be checked in luggage.

THE REASON However, security is decreasing in Australian and European airports. As more countries drop harsh f lying regulations, the United States is faced with

citizens who question their own rules for air travel.

The security proceedings may seem unjust, particularly when travelers bound to the U.S. are not subject to the same regulations. But in an interview with NBC News, DePaul University professor Joseph Schwieterman stated, “Americans have yet to make any really major sacrifices for their security. Pat-downs and scanners are minimally evasive … and there’s even resistance to this, just 15 seconds of awkwardness.”

Should regulations be lowered?

Are they really a big deal? As American citizens, it is common to demand the very best, so why should we want airport security and safety to be anything less?

The bottom line is that national security is not something to be taken lightly. As a resident of Maui, I travel frequently, braving the airport at least once a month. I’ve experienced boarding passes marked to the wrong destination, delayed fl ights, random bag searches, beeping metal detectors and crying children; the list goes on. I’d rather go through an extra 30 minutes in the airport security line than worry about the safety of my fl ight.

M ARC A R AK AKI Sports Editor As the most noticeable player on the Rainbow Warrior basketball team, Isaac Fotu’s afro makes the 6 -foot 8 -inch forward appear taller.

“With the ‘fro I’m like 6’10”. It makes me look bigger,” Fotu said.

But it may be Fotu’s presence off the court that sparked a new sense of school spirit. A fter “Wig Night” against Illinois, those afro wigs came back again against North Dakota.

For this Saturday’s game against Pepperdine, the theme is “Nerd Night.” There will be a prize for the best-dressed nerd or geek.

“I love it. I think it’s really cool – the support and how much students get behind it,” Fotu said.

“It really gets us going seeing all the students supporting us.”

A C O L L E G E ATMO S P H E R E And that is exactly what head coach Gib Arnold wants to see.

“It’s just fun,” Arnold said.

“We really do want to create a college atmosphere here. We have 19 home games. We have a lot of students who have not experienced the thrill of Division I basketball. We have a team that is very likeable, very fun to watch and they’re in the same classes as everybody else. They’re just guys off the f loor.

“It’s been one of our main goals to get the students out. If they want to dress in wigs or bikinis or whatever, I’m all for it.

gether on those nights and like we say, ‘Every game’s a party.

But without Fotu, there is no “Wig Night.”

“I always hear random people shouting out ‘Fotu’ and stuff,” Fotu said. “It ’s cool to be recognized.”

“Isaac is a fun, laid-back guy,” A rnold said. “He repre sents the islands ver y well. He’s bright. He’s a ver y articulate young man. He’s a great basketball player and off the f loor you see him in that big ‘fro,’ you’d think he’s a big ego guy but he’s not. He’s very humble – a little quiet but funny. He’s got a great sense of humor.”

‘Not just a game; it’s an event’ from page 15

“Secondly, I think Jamie Smith – he’s been phenomenal. He’s been working his tail off getting things organized and doing what they’ve never done here before – getting the students involved and getting our guys involved to where we’re knocking on doors, we’re in cafeterias, we’re on cam-

pus, we’re doing pep rallies. Not a lot of people know who he is, but I would give him almost all the credit for his hard work.”

Smith, a native of Andover, England, came to Hawai‘i after spending last season with the Boston Celtics of the NBA. His responsibilities included being a

video coordinator and working out the team, including NBA sharpshooter Ray Allen.

“The fi rst major thing with the NBA is that the basketball game is not just a game, it’s an event,” Smith said. “It’s about entertainment, not just a sport. That’s what I’m trying to build here.”

“We’re trying to get the players to interact with the student body.

We’re targeting the freshmen. We feel that if you get them for four years, then by the fourth year we’re going to have really good attendance in the student section. But we still have to perform on the court.”

A nd the players have bought into the effort as well.

“He’s [Smith] been the man,” Fotu said. “He’s been the reason that all of the students have been coming.”

“Jamie’s been working on our website and getting ourselves pro-

moted on campus,” junior forward Hauns Brereton said. “He knows a lot of skills to help people come here. We’re happy to have him.”
