H OW L O N G H AV E YO U B E E N DAT I N G? A little over a year.

WHO MADE THE FIRST MOVE?

Elyse: I did. We both worked in the mall and would run into each other all the time. I recognized him from high school, but I never said hi because I didn’t think he would remember me since he was a few years older. Then one day his profile picture popped up on that “people you may know” thing on Facebook. I didn’t want to seem like a creeper, so I asked one of our mutual friends to introduce me to him. After a few weeks, I said screw it, I’m gonna introduce myself. Added him on Facebook, met up with him at the mall – and here we are today. Ikaika: I was in disbelief when she messaged me. I did remember her from high school, but I was too shy to say hi. I’m glad she made the first move.

W H AT WA S YO U R F I R S T DAT E L I K E ?

Elyse: Awkward. But not in a bad way. Ikaika: Yeah, it was awkward. We were both shy, and I was so nervous. Elyse: When he first asked me out, he had to repeat himself four times because he kept mumbling under his breath and I couldn’t hear him over the music at Starbucks.

W H AT D O YO U L I K E T H E MO S T A B O U T E AC H O T H E R? Elyse: I like how he’s such a gentleman. He’s always so chivalrous, not only to me but also to others. He’s always keeping an eye out and trying to do the right thing. Ikaika: I like her smile, her sense of humor, her intelligence and her very curly hair.

H OW A R E YO U S I M I L A R/ DIFFERENT? Ikaika: We both like spending time with our friends and family. Elyse: Family is very important to both of us. Ikaika: We also have similar tastes and interests in books and movies but very different eating habits. Elyse: Oh yeah, I don’t understand how he can prefer warm soda. And he doesn’t like ice cream. Who doesn’t like ice cream?

HOW DO YOU MAKE YOUR RELATIONSHIP WORK? Ikaika: We do our best to see each other as much as possible.

Elyse: And we’re also very honest with one another. If there are any issues that come up, we immediately talk about it. Ikaika: We’re normally so honest about how we’re feeling that we don’t really “fight.” We always try to be respectful of each other by listening and talking it out.

T I P S F O R O T H E R C O U P L E S? Elyse: Have fun and be silly. Love needs laughter. And I know it’s been said many times before, but honesty, communication and respect are essential. Ikaika: Yeah, my biggest tip is to be honest with your partner about what’s going on in the relationship. If there’s something bugging you, don’t let it stew or else it’ll turn into resentment and eventually you’ll have a big, ugly fight.

A N Y VA L E N T I N E ʼS P L A N S? Elyse: I have school during the day and he has to work that night, so no big plans. We’re thinking of doing something low key, like packing dinner, bundling up and going stargazing.

A couple years ago, Zey Tong snuck into a University of Hawai‘i at Mā noa concert and encountered Lauren Nishimura, a girl who impressed and surprised him. Although Tong graduated from the university with a degree in engineering two years prior, he accepted a friend’s invitation to the concert so he could meet some ladies. After making his way through the crowd, he reached the front of the stage and danced alone for about 20 minutes before he felt someone grab his hand. “I was just dancing by myself, looking around, seeing if I knew anybody, seeing if I wanted to know anybody … all of a sudden, the crowd got rowdy … then I felt somebody grab my hand. So I turned to the direction my hand was being grabbed, and I saw Lauren,” Tong recalled.

Before he could continue his story, Nishimura chimed in, “I did not make eyes at you.” “This girl,” Tong continued with a meaningful look across the table at Nishimura, “grabbed my hand. We locked eyes, and she made eyes at me.” As the story goes, she let go of his hand, and he continued to dance by himself. Then from the corner of his eye, he noticed her slowly approaching again until she was standing in front of him. He put his arms around her, and they danced for a few songs before he asked for her name and later for her number. “So, I bust out my phone, and she tells me her number. After I’m done inputting the number, I look up, and her lips are right here,” Tong laughed as he pressed his fingers to his lips. “It was a forceful peck,” Nishimura added. That was the start of their relationship, and two and a half years

$$$ If you’ve been saving for this special day, but all the best restaurants have already been booked, try making a reservation at the Pineapple Room in Ala Moana Shopping Center. Though the location isn’t ideal, the food is, and there is a special prix fix menu for Valentine’s Day dinner. The setting is intimate, and even if you didn’t manage to get a table at Alan Wong’s, you will still be able to eat dishes created by an award-winning chef.

$ The Tea Farm Café is a cozy spot for a quick lunch with your sweetheart. The wide variety of tea is delicious, and the atmosphere is soothing, which makes it an excellent place to talk and focus on each other. If you prefer more intimacy, cook a meal at home. Making food together is a great way to bond, and you’ll get a out off it aass we well. ttasty ta ast sty ty meal meal me al o utt o well ll.. ll

$$$ If you’d rather spend money on an adventure to remember, try renting a kayak in Kailua and taking a trip to the Mokulua islands. You can only land on North Mokulua Island, where there is a nice sandy beach. Though it is unlikely you will have the place to yourself, not many people are willing to kayak the distance out – take a picnic with you, fi nd a secluded spot and enjoy.

$ You could go for an epic muddy slog through the jungle up to Maunawili Falls – though it can get crowded – or get some great views by heading up Kuli‘ou‘ou Ridge Trail. If you want something a bit easier, take a short walk from the Turtle Bay Resort and fi nd the secluded Kawela Bay.

SHARE A SHOW $$$

The Neal S. Blaisdell Arena will be featuring K-CI & Jojo, Shai and Bobby V & Blackstreet at 7 p.m. on Valentine’s Day. These bands are known for romantic music, so if you have $45-$160 to spend and you enjoy a good show, this might be the thing for you. Ticketmaster.com is currently selling tickets for this special event.

$ You may be aware that the Hilton Hawaiian Village Beach Resort and Spa hosts fi reworks every Friday night, but how often do you take the time to see them? The Friday after Valentine’s Day would be the perfect opportunity to head down to the beach with a blanket and stare up at the display with your darling. Then, take a walk down the beach and enjoy nature’s display of stars to finish off the evening.

Dress ready for Valentine’s COMPILED

R O MA N T I C To put together an outfit for a Valentine’s date, it would be best to wear a lighter color to keep with a soft tone. Dresses are great outfits for dates because they are classic. If your dress has special accents such as lace details or cut-outs, it will work better by adding fl are. A fl attering blush peplum dress with sheer black lace is a perfect outfit for a date because it hints at Valentine’s color. (Forever 21, $24.80)

K ARISSA MONTANIA Staff Writer

BY

Whether you’re expecting candy, fl owers or chocolate, these outfit ideas will help you prepare for a romantic, fancy or casual date.

FAN CY When looking for a fancy outfit to wear for Valentine’s Day, something with sequins or glitter is always fun and exiting. A little black dress is also edgy to wear. A black dress strays away from classic red and pink colors that can be too cliché. The sparkle and illusion of revealing some skin from the sheer material make this dress work. (Forever 21, $27.80)

CA SUA L

Casual dates are more comfortable, so jeans and a loose-fitting top with flats are the way to go with colors like mint, white, nude, lavender or blush. The mint green top with the lace details on the back make a flirty and casual outfit. It’s lightweight and comfortable to move in, yet it still has femininity. (Nordstrom, $38)

Pair Paiir the shirt with wit white pants to complement c the essence of a casual date. With cas the right color top and shoes, it won’t be too t laid-back. (Nordstrom $44) (No Blush heels with gold cap toes match the dress and accentuate with light colors and bright tips and straps on the back. (Forever 21, $27.80)

These shoes match the dress and continue with the theme of shimmery black. Heels are always appropriate for dates. (Forever 21, $24.80)

Bla flats with gold Black chain detailing add cha sophistication to the sop outfit. (Guess, $99) out

The fi rst tale is that Valentine was a priest or bishop in the Roman Empire. The emperor at the time, Claudius II, banned marriage for young soldiers because he believed that single men made better soldiers. Valentine did not agree with this new law, and he married young couples anyway. He was put in jail and sentenced to death for defying the emperor.

Variations of both stories say that after Valentine was jailed he fell in love with a young woman before being put to death. In this added ending, he met the jailer’s daughter before his execution and signed a letter to her “from your Valentine” before he was killed. He became a saint after his death, and news of his kindness spread to other countries.

Sex ed: Why is the U.S. screwing its kids? TIM M ETR A Associate Opinions Editor Americans have retained a puritanical mindset when it comes to educating children about their sexuality. This ignores the repercussions of failing to properly educate adolescents about how and why their bodies work. From the time the nurses in the maternity ward put a pink or blue blanket on an infant, society is stepping on a slope that gets steeper and slicker as children grow into adulthood.

A D U LT E D U C AT I O N

Why doesn’t the U.S. teach comprehensive and practical sexual education in the public school system? Is there some unspoken understanding among the Department of Education and parents that the future of the human race isn’t capable of understanding how their bodies work? This seems to be as preposterous as telling adults that they aren’t capable of understanding why they fall in love. Love and sex are both biological and psychological processes, and they’re intimately entwined with one another. Yet the idea of love is slowly and insidiously slipped into children’s heads from the first time they hear a story ending with “and they lived happily ever after.” Sex, though, is absolutely forbidden territory. Children are innately aware of gender and sexuality;

by the time a child is 18 months old, it can recognize a difference in the gender of adults, and it’s normal behavior for toddlers in the three to five-year range to derive pleasure from touching their genitals. For whatever reason, parents suppress these types of behavior and either refuse to discuss sexual anatomy with children or avoid the issue with euphemisms or lies.

T O T E AC H O R N O T ? Recent studies have demonstrated that a lack of sex education has a detrimental effect on the rate of teen pregnancy and prophylactic use. When compared to other firstworld countries, including the U.K., Canada, France and Sweden, the birth and abortion rates in the U.S. are significantly higher. More female teens in the U.S. are also becoming sexually active at a younger age than in other countries with a more comprehensive sexual education system. Beyond just the reproductive aspect, teaching children and adolescents about their bodies and healthy sexual behaviors has been shown to decrease instances of abusive relationships and unwanted pregnancies as well as increase general emotional well being and sexual health. If kids are taught the ins and outs of normal, healthy behavior, they are more likely to demonstrate good decisionmaking skills when it comes to their own relationships as teenagers and adults.

DIFFERENCE The time has come for parents to put their squeamishness aside and do the right thing. We know that there are potentially life-ruining consequences to inadequate education about sex. The trauma of having sex too soon, teen pregnancy, abortion and sexually transmitted diseases can leave both physical and emotional scars. If the Department of Education won’t step up and do the right thing, then it’s up to us, the parents of the next generation, to make sure that our legacy doesn’t face the awkwardness of adolescence as unarmed as we did.

If you want to take your special someone out on Valentine’s Day, you’d better plan ahead. Be prepared to deal with crowds at romantic restaurants because, chances are, most couples on the island have had the same idea as you. Staying in and cooking your own meal is a thoughtful and cost-effective alternative.

S P L U RG I N G Holidays are the perfect time to treat yourself. Any day where there’s a good excuse to eat some chocolate and heart-shaped candies sounds like a great day to me.

Being surrounded by happy couples makes some single people feel lonely and excluded. I don’t mind being single on Valentine’s Day, but judging from the slew of depressing Facebook statuses leading up to Feb. 14, I know that there are people who mind a lot.

C AT C H I N G U P Christmas is a busy time of the year, and it’s easy to forget to send a card or two to loved ones amidst the hustle and bustle. If you’re still feeling guilty about it, Valentine’s Day is an opportunity to redeem yourself and show people you care.

b o m

S L OW I N G D OW N People seem to be a tad more giddy on Valentine’s Day, whether because of the availability of sugar or excitement for the day’s (and night’s) plans. Either way, a change in scenery and mood is fun, even if it’s just for a day.

TR A JAN AGRIPPA Contributing Writer

If you’re like me, you’ll be single on Valentine’s Day. It will be another lover’s day spent on the cold floor of your damp studio apartment curled up in the fetal position, hugging an empty bottle of cheap red wine. Well, maybe not that bad. This will be my fourth consecutive Valentine’s without a significant other. For the last three, I was fortunate, depending on how you look at it, to be working in a restaurant and with an excuse to be busy. While waiting tables, I’ve been forced to witness lovers in the throes of romance, disregard their surroundings or exchange sly glances and cleverly placed sexual innuendos. I’ve seen old couples whose love has lasted and young lovers whose mere presence

alone is enough to make birds sing and flowers bloom. What was I talking about? Oh right, what to do when single on Valentine’s Day. One can seek refuge and avoid getting caught in the crossfire of cupid’s arrows at The Hard Rock Café, which is throwing a party with live music and no cover. I’d prefer not to be packed like a sardine in a corporate tourist trap with bleeding eardrums, but you might not mind. Kaeley Glasco, writer for the examiner.com, suggests taking a cooking class. Nothing says hopeless desperation on Valentine’s Day more than cooking for yourself. When the chef asks, “Why are you crying?”, just tell him, “I’m not; it’s just from cutting these onions.” Glasco also recommends taking a dance class. I don’t believe there is another activity that requires a partner more than

dancing. Heck, why not just slow dance with a mannequin in Macy’s? It takes two to tango. I need a nice bar to drown my sorrows and rally around all the single companions that I can muster up. Edge Bar is having a Broken Hearts Fest. Perfect. What’s better being with good folks than in a similar situation of trying to fill a void? What better way is there than to fill that void with alcohol? Edge Bar it is. Here is where I would usually insert ideas for couples, but I think you guys have that covered already. The world, and every restaurant for that matter, is your oyster on Valentine’s Day. Even if you’re single, Valentine’s Day should be enjoyed nonetheless. Celebrate it or don’t because at the end of the day, it’s just that – another day.

VISUAL VALENTINE’S

Pursuing your perfect pixelated partner PAIGE TAKEYA Managing Editor Sometimes love is a solo affair. If you’re spending your Valentine’s Day alone, take some solace in these video games with romantic overtures – because if you can’t beat ‘em, you might as well join ‘em. Last year, Ka Leo brought you a list of dating simulation games to try, but this year, we’re looking for games where you can tie the knot.

ʻFA B L E I I I ʼ

Platform: 360/PC Romance: As the bachelor king (or queen) of Albion, you have the option of finding yourself a consort. You begin the game with a childhood sweetheart – who may or may not survive the opening chapters depending on your morals – but your charisma is so potent that anyone in Albion can be charmed into your bed. Once you get hitched, your spouse waits for you at home while you adventure. Emotional impact: 1/5 torches. Whether you marry a brighteyed palace maid or a male prostitute, all your romantic partners will eventually devolve into the same nag who always interrupts your questing with demands for sex and gold. This is when you should pursue the “King Henry VIII” achievement, wherein you marry six times and kill two of your partners. Similar games: “The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim” (PC/PS3/360) also features an at-home spouse, but this partner manages a store and gives you useful items – pretty much a way better deal. Another plus is that your character receives a “stat buff” (skill bonus) for sleeping in the same bed as your spouse.

ʻH A RV E S T MO O N : A N E W BEGINNINGʼ

Platform: 3DS Romance: You are a young farmer eager to revive your family’s dilapidated farm in Echo Village. Luckily for you, there’s no need to go at it alone – you have your pick of the ladies and

gentlemen of the town to woo and wed. Courtship involves getting to know your paramour, charming them with your homegrown wares and eventually proposing with the traditional Blue Feather. Once married, your spouse will assist with farm chores and make e you lunch every day. Emotional impact: 3/5 torch-es. Before you get married, yourr lover is sweet as sugar, will writee you tender love notes and go on n romantic moonlit dates with you.. Unfortunately, once you max outt their affection and marry them,, their personality goes static and d you can expect to hear the same tender terms of endearment each morning – forever. Similar games: “Rune Factory: Tides of Destiny” (PS3/Wii) is essentially “Harvest Moon,” but with more monster fighting.

Similar games: “Second Life” (PC) also involves the same intense life-simulation experience, with an emphasis on interacting with other players. You can still get married in “Second Life,” but this time it’ll be with a “real” person.

RELAY TEAM CAPTAIN’S MEETING

Romantic video game quotes “No matter what happens, even if you become the world’s enemy, I’ll be your knight.” Squall Leonhart, “Final Fantasy VIII”

Feb. 7th at Campus Center Executive Dining Room, 6:30 pm

INVITES YOU AND A GUEST TO ATTEND AN ADVANCE SCREENING OF

ʻ T H E S I M S 3ʼ Platform: PC Romance: “The Sims” series, as the name implies, is all about simulating day-to-day life and love. Your Sim starts as a baby and dies an old man or woman – and, of course, you can get married along the way. Everyone is a potential fiancée, though having certain traits will boost your likelihood of winning hearts (having high Jealousy, for example, may make a relationship rougher than it would if you were Charismatic). Once your affection levels are high enough, you’ll be able to wed your dream partner and make it official. Beware, though – Sims can get divorced and have affairs. Emotional impact: 4/5 torches. “The Sims” may not be driven by the same strong narrative that other games are, but since it’s a life simulator, it is easy to get attached to your virtual spouse. And after all, if you’re going to go through the effort of wrecking someone else’s marriage (with all of its detrimental consequences) for love, it’s likely that you’ll feel a little sad when your Sim husband or wife dies of old age.

“Forgive the insubordination, but your boyfriend has an order for you. ... Come back alive. It’d be an awfully empty galaxy without you.” Garrus Vakarian, “Mass Effect 3” “What? Say something! Am I so beautiful you’ve no words left?” Midna, “The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess” “I’ve been thinking about you a lot these days. While I work, and before I sleep, I remember the things you’ve said to me, or think about your smile. I want to spend more time with you. … That’s all I’ve been thinking of lately. So I decided to write you a letter. But am I boring you? I’m sorry. Talk to you soon. I hope that you will appear in my dreams.” Renee, “Harvest Moon: Animal Parade”

EDITOR’S PICKS: BEST / IDEAL DATES COMPILED BY CAITLIN KURODA Features Editor

B E S T DAT E SAR AH NISHIOK A, Opinions Editor “The best date I’ve ever been on was just me and my boyfriend in Las Vegas, and we went to eat pho at 4:30 in the morning. That was the best just because the food was good, it was just the two of us and the restaurant was empty, and we were just able to sit there and talk for a while. It was really nice.” JOSEPH H AN, Associate Chief Copy Editor “The best date I’ve been on has been probably just the typical date cliché – movie and dinner or dinner and a movie, in no particular order. But just the opportunity to spend quality time with the person that I really wanted to get to know was nice.”

A RIEL R AMOS, Special Issues Editor “The best date I had was when I was 14, and I went back to Kauai for the summer to visit family. I met this boy – his dad worked for my aunty, cleaning her fish tanks. And we did a boat tour on Na Pali Coast. So it was an all-day thing, and I got a little bit seasick but we went swimming with dolphins, and then at the end when the sun was setting, we were just staring at each other. It was my first kiss, his first kiss; it was really cute.” EMILY BOYD, Associate Design Editor “I went on one a few days ago, just to a Korean restaurant, to Chodang, and then saw a movie. And then you get lost and it takes a while to get back because you’re taking the bus, you don’t have a car – but it’s cute because you’re just standing around.”

JOEY R AMIREZ, Sports Editor “My best date was when I first started dating my girlfriend. I took her to the beach, and then afterwards we went to Downtown Disney. We walked around, we got Jamba Juice, and I actually accidentally spilled it on her shoes, but she was totally cool with it. So we were done and getting ready to leave, and I backed my car into another car. It was a total disaster date, but for some reason she was totally cool with it. And so we drove up to this empty parking structure that’s next to Angel’s Stadium, and it’s got the best view of the Disneyland fireworks I’ve ever seen.”

CAITLIN KURODA, Features Editor “One of the best dates I’ve had with my boyfriend was when we spent the night in Waikīkī over summer. I had just turned 21, and something about having a few drinks with my boyfriend and being able to wander around like a tourist late at night was really fun. We had some great conversations, and we found a midnight taco stand.”

I DE AL DAT E NIK SEU, Photo Editor “I’ll finish my food before she does, it’s not messy, I don’t trip on the way out. I’m a smooth operator.”

PAIGE TAKEYA, Managing Editor “My ideal date would be … First we would go to the movies and watch a cool action movie, because we’d be really pumped. Then we’d go eat sushi after, to calm down and be elegant. And then once we’re calm, we’ll probably go walk around somewhere … And then we would have dessert – something really cute and girly, like shave ice. Not cake, it has to be something you share. And then I would say, ‘Man, we should go play video games,’ and we would go play video games.”

CAITLIN K ELLY, News Editor “He would have to cook me pasta, and then we would catch up on all of the Disney movies that I missed out on in my childhood. ... And then he could make all my homework go away, and scratch my back.”

C HASEN DAVIS, Associate Photo Editor “Going to Disneyland, or Seaworld or something. But something like that is really fun because there’s so much to do. You can ride rides, you can go eat, and you can be a kid again. Plus Disneyland, I love Disneyland.”

NICHOLAS SMITH, Comics Editor “I’m heterosexual, but my ideal date would probably be with Batman, because he’s rich and he’s also Batman.”

BIANCA B YSTROM PINO, Design Editor “An ideal date would be going to a movie or a play of some sort, where you would laugh, or even if you weren’t supposed to laugh, you would end up laughing anyways. Then, basically we would just hang out and walk. I guess it sounds really weird but just go on kind of an adventure, like look at places we haven’t been before. So maybe like hiking, or like in the city in Chinatown, and just find some place that we’ve never been before to just hang out.”

NEW AND IMPROVED CAMPUS CENTER DINING ROOM As the Campus Center Renovation and Expansion project continues and as we anticipate the opening of the Recreation Center, why don’t we take a look at the recent renovation of the Campus Center dining rooms? The Campus Center third and first floor, and the Hemenway dining renovations took place during the Winter break and kicked off the Spring 2013 semester! The larger portion of the Campus Center dining room was laid out with new carpet, and compared to the previous set up, the renovation implemented high chairs and tables, along with more booth style seating. The different styles of seating were a great choice because it can accommodate different amount of students. For students who want to study in large groups or just hang out the new booth seating can support that. Students won’t have to move around and join tables anymore. And for students who want to study independently and enjoy a great view, check out the new bar-style table and barstools! Other than the Campus Center dining room getting a renovation, Hemenway’s BaLe and Campus Center’s Taco Bell received one over the break too! With brand new tables and chairs, Your Student Union is modernizing to fit constituents’ needs. So keep your eyes open for more enhancements!
