BLOCK PARTY HANA AH YOU STAFF WRITER
ALOHA NIGHTS COORDINATOR VERONICA FREEMAN
St. Patrick’s Day brings a burst of culture to the island and yet another excuse to get inebriated. The annual block party is thrown by Murphy’s Bar and Grill, with support from O’Toole’s.
CALENDAR EDITOR COLIN NGAI
AS ALWAYS, food, live Irish music and drinks will be plentiful. O’Toole’s has one of the widest selections of Irish whiskey in the state. Earlier in the day, O’Toole’s will have a full lineup starting at 1 p.m. featuring Kaimana Ceili Band, Kieran Murphy. At night, Doolin Rakes and Piranha Brothers will provide local music.

LAGER
Killian’s is a red lager. Its most unique feature is its deep scarlet hue. After a pour, the short head dissipates quite rapidly, leaving thin circles of white on the surface of the beer, which makes for a less than appetizing presentation. Its initial taste is pleasant, with overtones of malt and undertones of floral notes.
Harp Irish Lager by Guinness has a clear, medium-gold coloring. The head is clean, white and quite large, which hints at its high carbonation. The beer has a light, malty aroma. This lager tastes crisp, has a light body and a barely bitter back end.

Smithwick’s is an Irish Red Ale. but the only similarity it bears with Killian’s is its red color. The head of the ale is an agreeable balance between the ghostly bubbles of Killian’s and the fat froth of Harp Lager. The flavor profile consists primarily of malts with a slightly bitter finish.

Before you go out for a night of drinking on St. Patty’s Day, don’t forget to 'green' your outfit!
Perfume is a must when in crowds; choose something sweet, but not overpowering. Bringing a small clutch with you is always a good idea. Look for a clutch that has lots of pockets but is still streamlined. A unique camera is also a fun way to document the night while adding to your outfit. Instead of dragging out your phone all the time, wear a fun, colorful watch. For the men who are going out for the night, stay simple with your outfit. Try dark-wash, slim jeans for a sleek look. Pair the jeans with a screened t-shirt — something with a pattern on it rather than a typical “Kiss Me, I’m Irish” shirt. Throw on a pair of dark shoes, like black Converse, and your outfit is complete!
Green crotcheted shirt Target Pink crocheted shirt Vintage Camera Urban Outfitters Gold cuff Stylist’s own Watch Target Perfume Marc Jacobs, Daisy eau so Fresh, Sephora Sunglasses Nordstrom Skirt H&M Jeans Papaya Premium
The green theme is a must for the day, but try to include other colors — like a pink lace shirt over a tank top. Don’t be afraid to try different things with your outfit! A green crocheted shirt is perfect for a casual, cool feeling. Dress it up with a black pleated skirt or down with ripped jeans. For a block party, heels or wedges are a fun way to accessorize. Studded silver pumps are always fun, while wedge sneakers add secret height and edgy flair.

It is widely believed that if you wear green on St. Patrick’s Day, the luck of the Irish will be on your side. However, wearing green isn’t a foolproof plan. If you’re looking to get lucky this St. Patty’s Day, here are a few ways to help seal the deal.
JIMMY EDENS AND SAMMI BAUMGARTNER STAFF WRITERS
JIMMY SAID:
1. THE IRISH GENTLEMEN There’s no bigger disappointment than running into the guy that has no ties to Ireland whatsoever wearing a “Kiss Me, I’m Irish” shirt. Classy move, bro. Match it up with a nice pair of slacks, a green vest and orange tie to make you look like a dapper Danny for the lasses this St. Patrick’s Day. 2. GROW A BEARD What better way is there to make men next to you look like boys than to have a magnificent, glorious beard? Having a fullset, well-manicured beard is a turn-on for most women, so let nature take its course this St. Patty’s Day and get GQ grizzly.
SAMMI SAID:
1. KNIT AN ARAN SWEATER Back in the day, Irish women would knit an Aran sweater, made of blackberry and honeycomb, to give to prospective husbands. If the man accepted, the love was set for eternity. This St. Patty’s Day, do the same for somebody you want. Who knows, your borderline craziness may be enticing to someone. 2. FAKE AN IRISH ACCENT Foreign is sexy, so this St. Patty’s Day, pretend to be someone else. If you realize halfway into the conversation that your impression is terrible, just keep rolling with it. The confidence will boost your chances.

Walking into Anna O’Briens on South Beretania Street, just a short way from campus, is like walking into an episode of “Friends.” It’s a great spot to chill, grab a beer and listen to some live music, especially on St. Patrick’s Day. Originally named Anna Banana’s, the pub got a makeover when Bill Comerford took over the place. Comerford started out as a bartender and worked his way up to owning Anna O’Brien’s as well as O’Toole’s Irish Pub, The Irish Rose Saloon and Kelly O’Neil’s. Anna O’Brien’s us a two story pub. Downstairs, the bar boasts the necessities of every club, from pool tables to a jukebox. Patrons are allowed to smoke downstairs, making it one of the few bars that still allows smoking. Upstairs is a smoke-free zone with a corner stage to accompany the many acts that perform there. Once a month, the bar features Irish music to honor its heritage. Comerford sums up the great business to it being a communal place, saying, “It’s everybody’s bar.” The bar offers Irish beers on tap like Guinness Stout at reasonable prices. They also have special clubs like the mug club, in which, if you bid on the right mug you get 50 cents off your drinks all night, something definitely worth checking out. Though many types of people - from bikers to punks to hippies - have passed through the doors, Anna O’Briens is a place that has drawn in devoted patrons time and time again. Photos by: Jimmy Edens

If you’re looking for a real Irish feel on St. Patrick’s Day, Celtic Waves has some great Irish tunes to get you in the mood. There’s nothing like a traditional jig, reel or waltz if you want to get in the spirit. This eight-member musical powerhouse has it all - from flutes and fiddles to guitar and mandolin. They recently played at Kelley O’Neil’s, so be sure to keep your ears open this St. Patty’s day.

Kelley O’Neil’s is just one place to go looking for great Irish sound and drink. Irish Rose Saloon, O’Toole’s Irish Pub and Anna O’Brien’s are a few other spots with that Celtic atmostphere.
